Free books on nearly any subject you can think of are all over the internet, ready to be downloaded, read, and shared. These are the best sites with free books covering a wide variety of subjects.

A huge quantity of books previously unavailable to the public was released starting in 2019 thanks to the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998. Because of an amendment to that act, works published between 1923 and 1977 can enter the public domain 95 years after their creation. Many of the sites listed below give access to the tens of thousands of books (plus movies, songs, and cartoons) available under this act. Downloads should be free and without retribution under U.S. copyright law.

If you like to read ebooks through Google Books, you'll be pleased to know that there's a full page of just free titles.

Google lists the top several dozen free books available on Google Play through the link below. There are history and religious books as well as titles in categories like Fantasy and Health, mind & body .

Books you "download" through this site appear in your Google Play Books account , where they're readable online, through the mobile app, and offline if you decide to export the book to a file.

Books are read by volunteers, which means performances can be hit or miss.

Many listed authors have zero books available.

If you've been looking for a great place to find free audiobooks , visiting Librivox is a good start. The site has many volunteers who work to release quality recordings of classic books. All the titles here are free, which is good news for those of us who've had to pony up ridiculously high fees for substandard audiobooks.

I like to use the New Releases RSS feed with a feed reader service to stay on top of new additions.

Internet Archive has a digital library full of fiction, popular books, children's books, historical texts, and academic books. The free books on this site span every possible interest.

You can sort these books by view count to see the most popular ones and sort by title or date published. Another way I like to scour the millions of books on this site is through collections such as California Digital Library , Getty Research Institute , and Boston Public Library .

There are usually several download options if you don't want to read the book online, such as PDF, EPUB, and Kindle.

Authorama offers a good selection of current and classic books from a variety of authors. They're organized alphabetically by the author’s last name and are written in HTML and XHTML, which means they're in an easily readable format. Most books here are featured in English, but there are quite a few German language texts as well.

This site offers a good selection of high-quality, free books you can read in your browser. These are in the public domain, which means they're freely accessible and allowed to be distributed. In other words, you don't need to worry if you're looking at something illegal.

The website is really simple to use, maybe too simple. The search box is basic and the only other way to find books is by scrolling through the author list. But, you don't need a user account to read these titles online, and they're all formatted nicely.

In our earlier articles, we’ve already covered a range of resources where you can find used textbooks to buy and rent  online. However, you can only stretch your budget to a certain extent, right?

With that in mind, we suggest that you should resort to free textbooks online options and get your hands on everything you can find. Sounds good?

In this article, we’ve compiled a list of reputable online resources that offer free textbooks — 10 thoroughly selected and checked websites where you can find textbooks and study materials at no cost. Out of numerous websites, we’ve weeded out the ones that are either outdated, or irrelevant, or seemingly helpful, or are simply lacking in some important way, and now, we are ready to share the ones you can completely rely on in your studies.

These websites want to make access to education easier and more affordable by offering their materials under an open license completely free. They also provide them in a variety of formats from PDFs to eBooks, which makes the learning process more convenient, especially now, when studying from home has become our new reality. So let’s get started.

1. Saylor Academy

Saylor Academy is technically not just an online textbook resource. The website provides free online courses. There are two options for students: they can take a Saylor Direct College Credit or get free Certificates of Completion if they don’t need credits. The list of the universities that accept credit transfers can be found on this website page: Saylor Direct credit courses .

The courses are self-paced; there is no need to finish the assignments by a certain time. Also, the materials are available online, mostly in the Resources section. The Academy also offers the Bookshelf page with numerous learning materials, which are now available as HTML versions (each book is based on its own repository at Saylor Academy’s GitHub account ) and is also accessible as a PDF file (see in the archived section).

There are courses and materials for students of absolutely different majors. The website does help students lighten their financial burden and benefit from transferring their credits.

2. Bookboon

Bookboon is a great place to browse for free textbooks online if you are a business major student or are taking several STEM subjects. Originally founded in Denmark in 1988 and transformed into a full-scale eBook publishing company in 2005, Bookboon has become the largest source of textbooks online over the years. Students do love it—you can literally download the books for free. All books are short and concise; the content is written by professors and experts.

Where is the catch, you’d ask? Since the books are free, you can only choose the resources the website provides; you won’t be able to get just any book you need by title or author. Besides, to be able to keep this business running and provide this free option to everyone who doesn’t want a subscription, the company adds ads to the books:

This is an example from Concise Hydrology by Prof. Dawei Han. The ads appear on every third centerfold or so, but they are more or less relevant to the book’s topic and, therefore, are not that irritating. A bit of advertising is definitely something that one can tolerate to get a good book for free, right?

3. OpenStax

OpenStax offers textbooks online for students of colleges and high schools. Deeply loved by many students, this non-profit digital learning platform and publisher of free textbooks was founded in 2011 by Rice University. It offers a range of peer-reviewed texts from the top universities in the U.S.

Subjects covered include Math (e.g., Algebra, Calculus, Statistics), Science (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Social Sciences (e.g., Sociology, American Government), Humanities (e.g., History), Business and so much more. The initiative is planning to add textbooks on data sciences, nursing, and liberal arts in the nearest future as well.

OpenStax digital textbooks are offered in PDF and ePub format; they can also be read online. You have two sign-up options: as a student and as an instructor. In the latter case, you can access additional materials (all books have references to other resources) that you can use in class. For instance, verified instructors can access answer guides and PowerPoint slides with images from the book. The platform also offers OpenStax Tutor —a homework helper for students who need extra help. It also provides an option to order print copies of their books.

OpenStax is an educational initiative; its mission is to “ improve educational access and learning for everyone ,” and they seem to be accomplishing it quite successfully so far. Thanks to the activity of OpenStax and similar initiatives that bring positive disruption to the textbook industry, the so-called “textbook bubble” seems to be deflating little by little.

4. Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is an online library of free eBooks and the first resource ever that started providing free eBooks in 1971. Exactly. At that time, no one even had heard of the Internet. Unbelievable! Founded by Michael Hart, the library thrives and helps millions of art and humanities students to succeed in their studies.

Books in the library are mostly popular classics that are offered in a variety of formats—HTML, ePub (with or without images), Kindle (with or without images), plain Text UTF-8, and others. Some books are available in foreign languages.

To find what you need on Project Gutenberg, search the library by author, title, subject, language, or book type. Apart from the classical library, you can also browse through the Project Gutenberg Self-Publishing Press, where contemporary authors share their works with readers.

If you are studying art and humanities, this platform is what you need in terms of free textbooks online. We doubt there is another place where you can find pretty much every classic English-language book out of copyright and in the public domain. Its design may seem a bit outdated, but as they say, “Don’t judge the book by its cover!”

5. Open Textbook Library

Open Textbook Library (OTL) was founded by David Ernst in 2012. The project was initially born as a part of the University of Minnesota to help all faculty members find free textbooks easily. OTL is technically a reference source that helps locate open books offered by various authors and publishers online. Nowadays, not all books in the library are published by the University of Minnesota; you can find books written and published by faculty members of different educational institutions. Users have permission to use these open textbooks under an open license.

The library’s materials are designated for post-secondary education specifically; therefore, you won’t find any popular classics or high-school textbooks here. If you need to have a book printed, it can also be arranged for a fee. A rating system that you can see on every book’s page is helpful if you need to understand which textbook is best for you.

6. Library Genesis

Library Genesis has several names and appearances, but the meaning is the same: it’s a place where you can get books, articles, magazines, and whatnot for your studies online for free. Also known as LibGen and Genesis Library, this online database of books is loved by the Reddit community as the place where you can get practically everything. It may seem somewhat complicated to use, but once you read this explanation , everything gets pretty clear.

You don’t need to create an account to use the resource. Just type in the title, the author, or the book’s ISBN in the search fields. If you know the information about the publisher or year, you can add it as well to refine your search. We recommend searching by ISBN, as it will increase your chances of finding the exact edition you need.

7. FreeBookSpot

FreeBookSpot is another online database with an infinite number of books. It features a bit outdated design and can make you slightly mad with all the ads popping up here and there, but it is a free textbook download website that you will definitely find exceedingly useful. If you have classes where a syllabus is mostly based on published books instead of textbooks, this source is what you need.

Books and textbooks can be searched here by title, author, ISBN, and language. Once you type in the request, you will be redirected to the table of results, where the book cover is featured, a book description is given, and a link/a few links are provided for download. If the first link doesn’t work, try another one. The download links are a bit tricky and may lure you into buying a premium subscription, but this is just a marketing trick. Just wait for a free download to start (you’ll see the countdown at some point) and get your book!

8. IntechOpen

IntechOpen dates back to 2010, and according to the site, it used to be “ a multidisciplinary Open Access publisher of books and journals covering the fields of Science, Technology, and Medicine. ” Nowadays, they describe themselves as a place “ where academia and industry create content with global impact ” and are the world’s leading publisher of open access books. IntechOpen boasts of having 3.3 million visitors per month and 136,000 IntechOpen authors and academic editors. We can recommend it as a place to enrich your scientific knowledge.

9. Online Mathematics Textbooks

This list is compiled by professor George Cain of the School of Mathematics, Georgia Institute of Technology, and if you’re studying math or any STEM subject, you may find it very helpful. There are 77 math-related books on the list. All book titles are accompanied by the names of the professors who either wrote the books or contributed to their creation. There are also some popular math textbooks with free access. All materials are available in HTML format and are supposed to be read online.

10. ScholarWorks

ScholarWorks is an open-access repository managed by the Grand Valley State University Library. It’s a place where works by GVSU scholars are maintained and showcased. The mission of the archive is to collect and preserve these works. This resource will be very useful if you’re a student of GVSU; however, any college student may access and use materials on ScholarWorks—it’s free. No account or student ID is required; you can download the materials directly from the website.

The archive offers textbooks, projects materials, master theses, dissertations, and articles. You can browse the collection by clicking on the Discipline Wheel and exploring the materials in 612 disciplines. Alternatively, you can search for a specific textbook or topic in the search field. The website even features an interactive map on the homepage where you can see how popular the resource is by the number of downloads.

5.  Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

“Black Beauty” is one the best-selling books of all time, and for a good reason—this story about a horse teaches kindness towards animals and people.

These days not many of us have butlers (servants hired to care for you and your house) but whenever people talk about a butler, his name sometimes comes up as Jeeves.

That name comes from Wodehouse’s series of books featuring the perfect butler Jeeves, and the many humorous adventures he and his employer had.

It’s told from the point of view of a soldier in the Civil War who’s actually running away from the battlefield. It uses many symbols and metaphors to discuss the important themes.

It's never been easier to find free audiobooks. Thanks to these sites, you can download thousands of new and classic audiobooks free of charge.

Bookworms, rejoice! Thanks to the internet, you can get a lot of free books online . But sometimes, you just don’t have the time to sit down and read. Luckily, there are plenty of free audiobooks available too. Which means you can listen while working, cleaning, running, driving or doing most other activities.

But with so many websites for free audiobooks online, which ones can you trust? We did some digging and found 20 sites that offer some of the best books in audio versions. Read on to see where you can (legally!) listen for free.

While Audible , a service from Amazon, isn’t strictly a site for free audiobooks, it does offer some audiobooks for free online. If you have a Prime subscription (we know, not free), you can get a free 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus, which includes two free Audible books.

Even without the subscription, there are still books in the Audible library that readers can download and listen to for free.

Fun fact: One of the best Amazon Prime benefits is that you’ll have access to hundreds of titles on Audible that you can’t find anywhere else, even without a subscription plan. It doesn’t give you a free Audible subscription, but it does allow you to access Audible’s free offerings.

Digital Book , formerly Librophile, is one of the sleekest platforms on the list. It’s like Netflix for books. You can search the database of public-domain books from sites all over the internet—including several on this list—and enjoy the catalog of more than 100,000 free audiobooks and e-books.

As an added perk, the free membership allows you to build a personal bookshelf to read later, so you don’t have to go searching for books you’ve considered in the past. You’ll find classics, new releases and everything in between on Digital Book—including family audiobooks for your next road trip.

Like Audible, this one isn’t strictly free. While you’ll have to pay to listen to many audiobooks on Spotify if you don’t have a premium subscription, there are free audiobooks on the platform. And if you happen to have a premium subscription, you’re in luck: It comes with 15 hours of audiobooks each month for no added cost.

Planning to purchase but not sure which audiobook to spend your money on? Here’s another great (free) feature: You can sample before you buy. Check out Spotify’s Audiobooks playlist, which will play the first chapter of dozens of new audiobooks before you commit to listening.

Another great thing about Spotify is that it isn’t strictly audiobooks, so you can also listen to music, podcasts, serials and more. This is where things can get tricky: Some channels on Spotify are classified as podcasts, though the podcast consists of someone reading a book aloud, giving listeners an audiobook experience. While many audiobooks are available only for purchase, podcasts are always free.

Libby, an app made by OverDrive , is unique from many of the other sites and apps on our list because all you need to access the top authors, current bestsellers and chart-topping books is a library card. Libby partners with local libraries around the United States and even some countries abroad to provide the newest books for your listening pleasure. Just like at your local library, you may have to wait for someone to return their virtually checked-out selection before you rent it. And if your library card needs to be renewed, you may have to take a trip to your local library to do so.

OverDrive also has a secondary app called Sora for K–12 students, which lets them virtually borrow e-books and audiobooks for kids  from their school’s library.

Hoopla works much like Libby: All you need is a library card to unlock free audiobooks and free e-books from your local library. But unlike Libby, there’s no queue. (You’ll receive “flex” borrows as well, but you’ll have to place a hold if all of your library’s copies of the book are loaned out.) But what if you don’t want to pay anything at all? The site has a long list of free audiobooks  available to download, whether you’re looking for steamy romances or pulse-pounding thrillers . There is one catch, though: You cannot download more than 25 free audiobooks per day, a pretty generous limit!

7. Open Culture

Open Culture has done the hard work for you. The site has compiled a list—or library, if you will—of all the free books you can download from other sites. You’ll find links to Audible, iTunes, Free Stream, Spotify, YouTube and a few other streaming services on their site. The books are organized by author name, and you’ll find a lot of the classics, including some of the best books of all time, alongside a large offering of poetry .

• You can’t filter books by genre or popularity
• Open Culture links out to free audiobooks on other platforms, creating an extra step

8. Storynory

If you have kids in your house or are a big fan of fairy tales and nostalgic trips down memory lane, this is the site for you. Storynory focuses on free audiobooks for kids, and you’ll definitely find some of the classics, including Aesop’s fables and the tales from the Brothers Grimm. The site is very kid-friendly, and there are funny books alongside adaptations of classic literature with child-appropriate formats and editing—a great way to introduce the young ones in your life to some of your favorite stories!

9. LibriVox

Volunteers from around the world give their time and their voices to record classic books that are in the public domain for listeners to enjoy on LibriVox . You’ll find classics like War and Peace and Anne of Green Gables , along with hundreds of books you’ve never heard of but will definitely fall in love with. This site will allow you to download books to your mobile device (including an iPod) or computer and will even walk you through burning your favorite audiobooks onto a CD if your desktop supports it.

There are currently more than 10,000 projects recorded on LibriVox, and you can contribute to this cause by donating your voice and reading short works, an actor’s part in a play, a chapter of a longer text or even an entire book’s worth of audio. LibriVox will release the finished project into the public domain once it’s complete.

10. LearnOutLoud

LearnOutLoud is a great option for everyone, but especially for students. This site hosts a wide variety of audiobooks, including fictional and educational content. The platform also offers more than just audiobooks—LearnOutLoud has video learning, podcasts, educational courses, documentaries, interviews, speeches and so much more. However, although there are fiction offerings, the site overall leans more toward educational books and classics, so this isn’t the right place to find the latest book recommendations or recent genre fiction.

11. Project Gutenberg

Don’t be scared off by this site’s basic appearance. Project Gutenberg is a no-nonsense site that offers access to public-domain classic e-books and audiobooks, like Moby Dick , Sherlock Holmes and more. Project Gutenberg’s more than 70,000 books are mostly narrated by its own volunteers and public-domain audiobook contributors, but there are also some computer-narrated books available.

Project Gutenberg is one of the oldest organizations offering free books online —it’s been around for more than 50 years!

• Some narration may be done by computer, rather than a human voice

Lit2Go is an online collection of stories and famous poems , all strictly in audio format. Like many of the other sites, it offers plenty of classics and public-domain books, but it also focuses on providing literature for K–12 students. Many books can be downloaded as a PDF and used as a read-along, and the books are split up into passages for easy segmenting of long-form stories. There are also other supplemental work and studies provided for students to help with their learning, and the books are searchable by reading level, a big plus for students and parents.

13. Loyal Books

Loyal Books is another public-domain audiobook provider, but don’t let that scare you off! Its website tagline is “Books should be free,” and with more than 7,000 titles, you’ll certainly find something that suits your reading taste. You can search the website by book genre , language, top 100 or the title and author.

• Options available in multiple languages
• Can sort by top 100 audiobooks
• Focuses on public-domain books, so may not have unique audiobook offerings

Unlike a lot of the sites on this list, Scribl provides books for free that are not in the public domain and not normally free. But unlike all of the other sites on this list, it doesn’t provide a way to search through only the free catalog, so you have to check each book’s price as you review the site’s offerings. That annoyance aside, Scribl is a good option if cost matters more to you than convenience. The company is committed to keeping at least 50% of all books on the site free, no matter how many books it uploads. Plus, a new crowd-pricing feature sets prices based on popularity, meaning less-popular books are more likely to be free.

15. Internet Archive

Internet Archive has thousands of free audiobooks and audio poetry downloads available. Like several of the sites we’ve listed, Internet Archive doesn’t just have its own catalog; it also allows you to search through several other audiobook provider archives and play your favorite titles through Internet Archive’s portal instead. You can search by year, topic, media type and more as you seek out your next favorite book. It has a wide selection of genres, including classic science fiction books and poetry.

16. ThoughtAudio

If you’re into classic literature and philosophy, ThoughtAudio could be for you. It provides a very small selection of free audiobooks online from authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain and Virginia Woolf. Each audiobook is actually a link to a ThoughtAudio YouTube video, but the listings also include a helpful short summary and some historical author information, which adds a little more value. This site is more helpful as a small directory of options available on YouTube.

17. YouTube

On top of having tons of free video content, YouTube also has free audiobooks you can listen to. There are many free audiobook channels you can subscribe to, and these channels have a variety of genres. You can listen to classics like Pride and Prejudice , fantasy books like the Harry Potter series and thrillers such as Stephen King’s In the Tall Grass .

There’s a wide variety of content available, but tread with caution: Your search may turn up some videos that violate copyright laws by reading books not licensed for audiobook distribution.

18. Free Classic Audiobooks

The name says it all: This is a website where you can listen to free classic audiobooks . These free audiobooks include Emma by Jane Austen, Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare . The website does look basic, but if you’re only on there to find classic audiobooks, it serves its purpose. This could be a good site to teach somebody who isn’t tech-savvy how to listen to audiobooks. It’s the perfect place to discover these timeless works!

19. Light Up Your Brain

This friendly and upbeat website is geared toward kids, helping them tap into their creativity and learn new things through resources carefully curated by the team at Light Up Your Brain . While the main resource is free audiobooks for kids, there are also printable coloring pages and brainteasers.

Something unique about Light Up Your Brain: The free audiobooks are created specifically for the website and recorded by Chuck, the website’s founder. Many of them are short bedtime stories in audio format.

20. Google Play

While you may think of Google as the world’s largest search engine, you’ll also discover free audiobooks hosted through Google Play . The nice thing about Google Play is that you can save your audiobooks right to your Google account (if you have one).

Google Play offers a very small collection of audiobooks voiced by narrators in its main Google Play audiobooks section. In addition, it has AI-generated public domain audiobooks specifically curated for readers in both fiction and nonfiction sections.
