Highlights from The event

Out of the box creative arts education as change maker building bridges through inclusive creative arts education  .

Culture and education are the backbone of sustainable development. Together they shape who we are and who will become.

In an increasingly diverse, interdependent and volatile world, what counts as high quality education has evolved. Having the breadth of skills to understand, adapt and thrive in the face of changing social, economic and technological demands is paramount.

Creativity, innovation, critical-thinking, resilience and empathy – this skillset is vital to harness possibilities and mitigate challenges today and in the future.

Creative Arts Education is the sole fuel for creativity. As educators responsible for teaching Creative Arts in South African schools, it is now more important than ever to integrate the arts and provide quality arts education to all learners in our schools.

What the event is about

The two day virtual event, South Africa’s largest conference on Creative Arts Education, will include keynote speakers, workshops, exhibitions and so much more to invigorate creative arts teaching in your school and classroom.

creative education sa

The WCED GET Curriculum Directorate is honoured to be a partner and supports the focus of the conference, to promote equity and diversity through the arts. The participation in the conference emphasises the opportunities that the arts bring to develop our learners as literate, informed, and appreciative arts consumers, practitioners, and audiences of the future.

Who this event is for

The conference and workshops are designed to provide a fresh and exciting approach to teaching the arts (music; art; design; dance; drama) for those responsible for teaching any of the Creative Arts components.

An Arts-based approach

to provide depth of experience in learning, brought about by inventiveness, experiences of beauty and human expressiveness through the use of arts-based approaches to teaching and learning. CCE seeks to develop the artistic competencies of all student-teachers through diverse modes of art pedagogies (visual arts, performing arts, literary arts)

An Active Learning approach

to mediate student-teachers’ learning in a range of educational methodologies and theories (for example enquiry-based, reflective practices and experiential learning). At the Cape Town Creative Academy it is our mission to realise the true creative potential of those brave enough to accept the responsibility of changing the future. To nurture individuality, encourage curiosity and ultimately empower a new generation of leaders in a world full of followers.

Creativity is the key ingredient of every human advancement. It disrupts the status quo, fuels change and drives revolution, which makes it the most sought-after commodity in a world that has an insatiable hunger for innovation.

To do, is to learn. The Cape Town Creative Academy features a transdisciplinary approach through four distinct degrees that collaborate and integrate where relevant.

Foundation semester.

The transition from secondary school to tertiary education presents particular challenges, especially in light of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the delivery of high school education. For this reason, the Cape Town Creative Academy presents a 6-month long foundation semester to all first-year students, irrespective of their creative field of interest, during which they are prepared for tertiary education in a manner that acknowledges the uncertainties that characterise current global economic, social and environmental conditions.

Students, therefore, commence their studies, not with a focus on one particular creative discipline, but rather with an emphasis on developing vital attributes such as creativity, curiosity, agility and resilience that will set them up well, not only for tertiary studies but also for the professional life to come afterwards. This shared foundation across creative disciplines furthermore gives students the advantage of being better informed when confirming their choice of specialisation in the second semester of their first year. During the second semester, students specialise in either Communication Design, Contemporary Art, Interaction Design or Motion Design so as to hone a particular skill set and professional sensibility that relates to that particular sector within the creative economy.

The courageous women of the townships

South Africa: since 1994 around 40 Educare Centres (ECD - Early Childhood Development Centres) have opened in the townships of Cape Town. Children are fetched off the streets and given a space where they can be children and where they can experience that there is more to the world than drugs, criminality and violence.  The Educare centres are run by the NGO Centre for Creative Education (CfCE), which coordinates the centres and offers training in leading such an Educare Centre. The CfCE, which is also in Cape Town, is also a training centre for future teachers.
