This paper investigates the effects of uncontrolled use of Google Translate (GT) on the development of students’ translation skills. It aims to find out if the current patterns of GT use by translation students could impact their learning outcomes, and if so, in what ways. The study uses think-aloud data from actual translation efforts of four students. Analysis of the four subjects’ translations show that their overreliance on GT for first drafts reduced their propensity to search for equivalents. However, when students post-edit poorly constructed GT sentences, they carry out a process of analysis and synthesis similar to the process of translating from scratch. The study concludes that post-editing GT translation is beneficial for translation students’ development of translation skills, but it warns against introducing or allowing its use at the elementary stages of translation training.

Ang online statistical machine translator (SMT) na Google Translate ang isa sa pinakapopular na makina ng pagsasalin sa kasalukuyan. Maaari itong kasangkapanin ng kahit sino, ng kahit anong ideolohiya, at para sa iba’t ibang layuning pampolitika, pangkultura, at pangekonomiya. This paper is a project on the subversive potential of translation using Google Translate as an aid for translation, contrary to its original monopoly capitalist ethos of privatizing language and information, and of market expansion. This paper articulates a possibility for a nationalist and anti-imperialist project by using Google Translate as an adjunct tool to translate from English to Filipino a poem written by Carlos Bulosan.

This article explores the nature, process and agents of translation in the early modern Philippines. It argues that while translation is often glossed over in the historical records of the Spanish colonial enterprise on the islands, it is, in fact, an underlying procedure through which the linguistic intricacies of the colonial encounter can be explained. The article further contends that given the exigencies of colonization, where the knowledge of languages is often framed within the parameters of religion and polity, the role of colonial translators should be examined in relation to other roles not associated conventionally with their office. It is through such an interrogation that translation is moved from its purported secondariness in the historical discourse into a place of heuristic primacy in narrating the early history of colonialism in the Philippines.

Translation and Interpreting

The task of researching the history of translation within the framework of a national literature overlaps with the task of interrogating the uses of translation in imagining a nation’s history. Although translation may be represented in this context as a neutral and unproblematic search for equivalence between languages, translational acts have been employed, either wittingly or unwittingly, to privilege a past and inscribe it into the accepted national narrative. Such is the role of translation in the history of Hispanic Filipino literature. In this article I argue that the endeavour of writing a translation history using Hispanic Filipino texts is called upon to examine translation in history, of history and as history, that is, how translation operates as a material, method and mode of commemoration. Translation is considered here as a fundamental component in the production and mediation of a text. It fulfils a gatekeeping function through which historical information is repatriated into the national consciousness.

The International Journal of Translation and Interpreting Research

From the point of view of historical discourse, it can be said that the Philippines is a country created through translation. The name “Filipinas” itself, given in 1543 in honor of King Philip II of Spain, is an attempt to inscribe this Southeast Asian archipelago within the colonial complexities of creation of meaning and knowledge transfer that in turn are articulated from unequal speaking positions. Political upheavals throughout its recorded history likewise situate the Philippines in a translational locus, where signification is negotiated within an ambit of linguistic multiplicity and an evolving translatorial habitus. For this reason, I seek to analyze how the term “Filipino” historically evolves through the prism of translation. Using exemplars gathered from the missionary-colonial corpus, I shall argue that the signifier is a product of the volatile equivalences of colonial discourse, where the processes of transposition, modulation, selection and occlusion are used in accordance with the prevailing translational skopos. Seen in this light, the term “Filipino” ceases to be a well-defined and homogeneous given, and should be consequently understood as a translation that emanates from the subjectivities of its transcreators.

Transnational Philippines: Cultural Encounters in Philippine Literature in Spanish

"The usual description that Hispanofilipino literature comprises the literary writings of Filipino authors in Spanish, places the question of language at its core. However, language appears to be a secondary concern in many analyses written to date, induced perhaps by the presupposition that the language of Hispanofilipino literature should always and exclusively be Spanish. A cursory perusal of the texts in the canon suggests otherwise: While Spanish is indeed the primary language of these texts, various acts of translation have been used in composing them and in giving them a literary afterlife beyond the immediate limits of their first production. I argue in this chapter that translation should be considered a language of Hispanofilipino literature. Instead of the traditional model that restricts it to that process of mediation ensuing from an antecedent text, I contend that translation should be approached as a fundamental practice of authoring postcolonial literature that reflects the allures and discontents of writing in a multilingual space under the colonial condition.

The centrality of translation in the practice of historical research is magnified in contexts where language serves as an impediment to accessing knowledge, such as in the case of the Philippines. In this paper, I shall analyze missionary histories and grammars of Tagalog, the basis of the modern-day national language of the Philippines called Filipino, and examine how the concept of “Asia” is imagined as an exotic Other in the textualization of its people. In proposing a translational reading of missionary texts, I shall provide examples of how colonial writing was instrumentalized to inscribe the Other within the history of Christian salvation, and how historical and linguistic texts constructed a colonial vision of the Philippines and Asia through translation.
