How to get a doctoral degree at Faculty 2: Civil and Environmental Engineering
Are you interested in a doctorate at our faculty? We are pleased about this and provide you with information about the process and the formal conditions under the doctoral regulations of 2019. In case you have been accepted under the Doctoral Degree Regulations of 2016, we provide an information leaflet .
General information on the doctoral procedure, the doctoral regulations of the University of Stuttgart, scholarships and funding opportunities, etc. can be found on the website of the Graduate Ccademy of the University of Stuttgart GRADUS . We recommend that you read this website first with five steps to your doctorate !
At our faculty there are currently two ways to obtain a doctorate:
- individual supervision by a supervisor of the faculty, or
- Integrated research training group " Interface-driven multi-field processes in porous media "
- Binational (D/New Zealand) research training group " Soft tissue robotics – simulation methods for the development of control and automation strategies of robots for the interaction with soft materials" (German)
- Simulation technology graduate school at the Centre for simulation sciences
Gaining your doctoral degree - faculty-specific regulations and supplements
Prerequisites for a doctorate.
Please inform yourself here, if you have
- obtained a degree of a foreign university (see subsequent section 1.), or
- studied a subject that does not correspond to one of our study program (see subsequent section 2.)
1. Acceptance with a foreign degree
You apply to GRADUS for acceptance as a doctoral researcher (see also the chapter below), including a request for stating the formal equivalence of your degree. GRADUS first checks the formal equivalence which requires additional time (approx. one to two weeks). Then GRADUS forwards your application documents to the faculty office. The Doctoral Committee will then accept your application under the precondition that you need to prove your knowledge corresponds to the one of our graduates. For this you might need to take additional courses. In any case, your supervisor has to submit a request to the Doctoral Committee for recognition of the equivalence of your university degree with regards to the content of your studies to one of our study programmes, possibly including a suggestion on the measures which you need to take.
2. Acceptance if subject of study does not correspond to study program of the faculty
You apply to GRADUS for acceptance as a doctoral researcher (see also the chapter below). GRADUS forwards your application documents to the faculty office. The Doctoral Committee will then accept your application under the precondition that with the provison that you proof knowledge equivelent to our graduates. In this case, the supervisor has to submit a request for recognition of knowledge to the Doctoral Committee including a suggestion on the measures which you might need to take (e.g. passing a certain course).
Application and fulfillment of the qualification program
Learn more about how to register, apply for and enrol for a doctorate:
Individual qualification programme
For the application for acceptance as a doctoral researcher ("Antrag auf Annahme als Doktorandin/Doktorand") you have to agree on your doctoral studies with your supervisor using the form agreement on doctoral studies . This contains your individual qualification programme. Please refer to the faculty's catalogue when determining the measures. Especially for courses on key qualifications (e.g. management competences) you can use the offers by GRADUS .
Doctoral committee
The doctoral committee will decide on your application for acceptance. As a rule, it meets before the grand faculty council (one meeting each in January, April, May, June, October, November, December). There are no meetings during the semester breaks. In urgent cases (i.e. for Visa or scholarship applications) the acceptance can be organised during the semester breaks with a circulation procedure.
Cumulative Dissertation
In principle, a cumulative dissertation is possible at Faculty 2. The faculty has decided on a guideline (in revision) [DE] for this and provides an additional handout [DE].
Preparation and submission of the dissertation
Please use the faculty template for the title page of the dissertation without the date of the oral examination. You submit x copies of your dissertation in paper form (bound) and one electronic version (PDF file) to the faculty office (x = number of rapporteurs + 1). These copies should be printed double-sided and bound. Both the pdf and the copies should contain a CV. In the hard copy also the doctoral researcher’s signed statement that he/she has completed the dissertation independently needs to be enclosed. This also represents the application for admission to the doctoral examination.
Please note the following resolutions of the doctoral committee of the Faculty 2:
- The dissertation should not contain more than 150 pages.
- Each dissertation must be accompanied by both a German and an English language summary with two to four pages each.
- If the dissertation is to be written in languages other than German or English, the doctoral committee will decide on this in each individual case.
The main supervisor writes to the doctoral committee including
- Confirmation that the dissertation is ready for acceptance
- Proposal for co-examiners (e.g. for the expert report on the dissertation)
- Confirmation of fulfilment of requirements (see prerequisites for a doctorate), if applicable
Irrespective of a participation in a structured doctoral programme, the final version of the agreement on doctoral studies (including the individual qualification programme) should be enclosed in the letter. For a discussion in the doctoral committee, the letter should arrive at the faculty office at least one week before the date of the doctoral committee meeting.
Appointment of co-examiners
At a meeting of the doctoral committee, the main supervisor presents the doctoral project. The doctoral committee admits the doctoral researcher to the examination and appoints an examination committee for this doctoral project (chair, supervisor and one or more co-examiners). The faculty office sends the dissertations to the co-examiners and organises the internal circulation procedure. These steps take several weeks to sometimes months.
Doctoral examination and publication of the dissertation
Presentation and oral doctoral examination.
After the internal circulation procedure, you can organise the date and time of your doctoral examination with the members of your examination board. You also need to book a room for the presentation and the subsequent examination. Please inform the faculty office about the date, time and place of your examination and the travel dates of your co-examiners. The presentation about the research topic immediately before the oral doctoral examination should last 30 to a maximum of 45 minutes.
Publication of the dissertation
You have to fulfill any changes suggested during the circulation procedure, the expert opinions, etc. by the time the dissertation goes to press. Within one year of the doctoral examination, you need to hand over a copy of your dissertation to your supervisor.
The supervisor will check the correctness of the dissertation and release the dissertation for printing. The University Library [DE] will inform you on its website about the formal requirements the dissertation has to meet, which publication options are available and how many copies you must submit.
After publication of the dissertation
The doctoral procedure is finished when the doctoral certificate is handed over to you by the faculty office. Now – no moment earlier – you can use the doctoral degree – congratulations!
The doctoral certificates (or a copy if you need them earlier) are also handed over once a year by the dean during the faculty graduation ceremony . This ceremony usually takes place in July.
You can apply to the doctoral committee for inspection of your doctoral file, including the expert opinions, in writing within one year. The doctoral committee will then determine the place and time for your inspection of your file.

From 2002 until 2020, the IPP for European Urban Studies was counted among the nationwide network of International PhD Programmes, which, within the framework of the programme "Doctorates at Universities in Germany (PHD)", were endorsed by the German Research Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service. Supported in years 2002 to 2007, the IPP European Urban Studies was the only IPP in Germany that was dedicated to urban research. It dealt with topics that are tested against such current models as the "European City," "Compact City," "Social City," "Net City," or "Zwischenstadt". The International Doctorate Programme “European Urban Studies” was then focusing on research on Urban Housing and Forms of Living with a focus on (multidimensional) housing policy, in the context of current societal challenges – such as climate change, social fragmentation, spatial disparity, cultural differentiation, immigration and the transformation of the real estate economy – and what these challenges imply for the cities of Europe.
Please note: Until further notice, the program is closed. You can find out more about the individual doctoral opportunities in the field of "European Urban Studies" on this homepage .

Kompetenzzentrum Medienanthropologie (KOMA)

Urban and Regional Research (German-Argentinian Doctorate Training Group)
Duration: 2013- 2020
The German-Argentinian Doctorate Training Group "Urban and Regional Research" is a cooperation between the Institute for European Urban Studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Design and the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba /Argentinia.
The aim of this doctorate training group is to give a selective group of young researchers the opportunity and the academic support to achieve results in urban research that can enrich the academic debate in this field both in Europe and in Latin America. Doctorate students in the program receive bi-national academic advising and take part in a structured study programme. Successful completion of the programme results in the awarding of the academic title of Dr. phil or Dr. Ing in combination with a doctor title from the partner university. This doctorate training group is the first of its kind at a Thuringian university and one of few in Germany. A stipend funded by the Deutsch-Argentinischen Hochschulzentrum covers travel and living costs for the academic year abroad.

Find your PhD position in Germany
Before you start your search ....
Before you start your search you should know that there are different PhD models:
- Individual doctorate or
- Structured PhD programmes
What's the difference? Check out our overview of the various ways to do your PhD in Germany
Find your individual doctorate
The "traditional" or "individual" path to a PhD remains the most common in Germany. An individual doctorate involves a thesis or dissertation that is produced under the supervision of one professor . This form of PhD study offers a great deal of flexibility , but demands a high degree of personal initiative and responsibility.
How to find your PhD supervisor
In Germany there is no central admissions or selection office for doctoral students. Therefore, your first step is to find a suitable professor who is willing to be your supervisor.
One way to find a supervisor is to look for a university institute that matches your area of research. The following online search engines might help you find a suitable supervisor:
- GERiT – German research institutions GERiT is a website containing information on approximately 29,000 research institutions in Germany. GERiT allows the user to search easily by location or subject. It provides all the information needed to choose an institution at which to research, study or do a doctorate. www.gerit.org
- Finding a PhD position PhDGermany publishes PhD openings in Germany that specifically target international applicants. Accordingly, in most cases the working language is English. Fluent knowledge of German is only required for certain special positions. PhDGermany helps you find the right PhD opening or supervisor for your doctoral thesis and assists you with the online application process. www.phdgermany.de
- Higher Education Compass This database provides up-to-date information from universities about doctoral opportunities in Germany. The search engine enables you to carry out targeted searches on the basis of departments, admission requirements and form of doctoral thesis. www.higher-education-compass.de
Furthermore, your contacts with your professors or previous university could help direct you to a suitable department or potential supervisor in Germany.
It is also helpful to attend academic conferences in your own subject area. There you will be able to exchange information and make contacts – and perhaps even find a future PhD supervisor.
Find your structured PhD programme
DAAD/Ausserhofer/Himsel
Structured PhD programmes in Germany are frequently very similar to the PhD programmes in English-speaking countries, in which a team of supervisors look after a group of doctoral students . Around 12,000 doctoral students from abroad – roughly one in four – do their PhDs in structured programmes. As a rule, it is possible to complete a doctorate in four to five years.
Where to find your PhD programme
There is no central database of all structured PhD programmes in Germany. You can usually find these programmes directly through the respective universities, graduate schools or non-university research institutions. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) database is also a good place to look. Here you will find a large number of PhD programmes that are specially aimed at international doctoral students.
International doctoral programme database
Are you interested in an international doctoral programme in Germany? This DAAD database presents a selection of roughly 230 international doctoral programmes in Germany. The database can be searched according to different criteria. www.daad.de/international-programmes
Doctoral programmes at universities
Many universities offer structured doctoral programmes, which they publicise on their websites. The Student Advisory Service or Graduate Centre at the respective university will also provide help here. You can find the relevant addresses using the Higher Education Compass provided by the German Rectors’ Conference. www.higher-education-compass.de
DFG-funded research training groups
Research training groups are also funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) for a period of up to nine years. Their key emphasis is on the qualification of doctoral researchers within the framework of a focused research programme and a structured training strategy. www.dfg.de > Current Research Training Groups
Helmholtz Research Schools, Colleges and Graduate Schools
The Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest scientific organisation. In collaboration with various institutions of higher education, Helmholtz Association research centres have established structured PhD programmes under the auspices of Helmholtz Graduate Schools, Helmholtz Research Schools and Colleges. www.helmholtz.de > PhD Candidates
Leibniz Graduate Schools
The Leibniz Association connects 97 research institutes that conduct problem-oriented research and provide scientific infrastructure of national and international importance. Together with universities they run structured PhD programmes in Leibniz Graduate Schools. www.leibniz-association.eu > Leibniz Graduate Schools
International Max Planck Research Schools
The Max Planck Society specialises in innovative basic research and its institutes are able to offer up-and-coming researchers excellent infrastructure and support. The website lists the programmes available at International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS): www.mpg.de > International Max Planck Research Schools
Max Planck Schools
In Germany, the best researchers in a specific field are often work at different universities and non-university research institutions spread throughout the country. The Max Planck Schools serve as hubs which gather this distributed knowledge. Here, the brightest minds in their fields have come together from within the scientific community to interconnect in faculties made up of active researchers. Students gain access to these unique networks, learn in close personal exchange from leaders in their fields and their peers, and enjoy access to outstanding infrastructure. Currently, three Schools are operating in the fields of Cognition, Matter to Life, and Photonics. www.maxplanckschools.de
Where can I find out about requirements?
Application procedures differ from programme to programme . The precise requirements and deadlines can be found on the website of the respective university, research training group or graduate school. You should therefore first choose a PhD programme and/or graduate school.
