Talking about personal life was connected with our principle in their life to getting result of purpose in life, so what does your principle in this life? Before I tell you about them, I would like to share my principle in this life that ‘ Life is not to be praised, Death is not to be abused‘, as said in Siti Nurhaliza statement. This time, I would like to introduce my self. I covers  into four aspects such as Identify, Daily Activity, Parents and the last is my Community.

My full name is Tantri Yuliana,but  you can call me Tantri.  in friend site like facebook uses my popular name is Tantri Yosepa, and you can find it at my email is [email protected] . Why I uses the name is Tantri Yosepa not Tantri Yuliana at facebook because Tantri Yosepa is my child name from my aunt, his name late Alim. I was born on July 22 nd 1990, so for this year my old is 21. And than, my born place at Tambah Dadi village , Purbolinggo East of Lampung. This place as my live until this moment with parents.  I want to change my village be a famous with my knowledge that I have at college. So, please help me to teach how the good government, value of human right, freedom and democracy based on my study in other country.

If you see my daily activity, You will feel shocked because I have experienced some accident while Pre elementary until in this University, I usually happen accidence on street. In Pre elementary or Play Group at TK ABA , I always went to school by foot, But once day when  I saw my mom come at my school made me happy and then I run out to hug her suddenly I fall in gutter and made my nose ache. For this school, I have an achievement makes me proud when I follow in draws competition, song competition and instructor gym every Friday at TK ABA. This achievement makes me support for Elementary school at SD 1 Tambah Dadi, I always motivate my self be a good students. I usually have the first rank in the class, and I active in boy scout and Baseball called ‘Rondes’.  In final test , I got the best value of this school. So, this result made me to continue study in junior high school at SMP 1 Purbolinggo, at Tanjung Inten village. I always went to school by bicycle because this location so far from my house around 12 Km. In this moment, I have chance to follow the competition of speech contest in English language at Raman Utara, and I have unforgettable moment when my score of English test at first grade in SMP is the best of six class. Next, when I am continue at SMA 1 Purbolinggo. I always went to school by motorcycle because this location like 15 Km from my house. In Third grade of this school, I got accident when my motorcycle broke on street and made my foot ache. But, It was not makes me give up to active in class. I chosen to follow the competition of UUD 1945 at Sribawono, and I active on theater and tradisional dance. I have a performance as a read of poem and Sigekh dance in graduate celebration , also an event of theater at Tegal Gondo village as a Pantomim in theme ‘ Kulo Namung Ke pingen Pentas’ in English, I just want to performance. And graduated from Senior high school, I choose the college like University Muhammadiyah of Metro in English Education until now. My scary moment, when I got accident with my friend on street makes me realized that God is creature of my life, so Study is one kind of praise and I must focus to get my ambition be a good teacher. Beside to finishing my study at University, my daily activity is same with another start from get up in the morning at five a.m., and than pray Subuh and continue with do their work like washing clothes, sweeping floor, washing plate and glass and breakfast. After that, do the activities in out of home until at six p.m., and back to home and take a bath than pray magrib also dinner. After I get energy , so I do finish my assignment with my laptop and before I am sleeping, I always pray isya. So, every time in my life is more important, just a few time to take a rest. It is to realize my future as a good teacher.s

Speak about oldster, makes me cry because I always make my mom feel alarm when I ride my motorcycle so faster. I am the third child of my parent children. I have one brother and one sister. My mother name is Siti Khotijah and my father name is Misni. My parents old around fifty years. And my father job is ex-PNS but now he is a farmer and my mother just a housewife. My brother name is Toto Kurniawan , he is graduate from POLINELA of Lampung, but he still jobless until now and my sister name is Dyah Asnawati. She is from the same university with my brother, but she is work at Great Giant Pineapple factory. She has been married with Tur Budi Setiawan and they have one child, her name is Anisa Asih Safitri. Based on the member of family its called a big family, but I have a problem when my dad go out from his job as a teacher make his sales does not enough to need my family beside my study at University so expensive. Before my dad become ex-PNS, he get values around three million with some subsidy like the money of private at school, the money of worksheet book, but he is just a farmer now. This situation does not make me give up to finish my study at University. Last time, I have a job to write an assignment like a paper of individual or together assignment. I sale it around thirty five thousand rupiahs. And I can collect all of them around two hundred rupiahs, its make me happy, and I always accept a task to finish other my friend assignment. According to me that knowledge is so important to success of life, with them can change our life as better.

The last is my Community. I have a skill in language, and I am interested with the culture . So , I the community is important past of my life. Be I am as a member of ‘ Sanggar Seni Tjap Gerobak’, beside it I want to successful in learning English so I follow of Atlanta Media Prima like a course how to speak English well. I think that I have low experience about human so, I hopes that with my chance to continue my study at foreign country makes me get the biggest experience with some community, amin.

To sum up that life is not easy to get expensive thing, so based on my experience during elementary school until now makes me to increasing motivation for graduated my study at University. I know that my parents feel so heavy to price my education cost as long around 16 years at school, so I do not give up to always study for explore my skill in language. As I know that I am very interested with culture like dance, poem, and speech in English language. With my good habit in daily life to explore my skill in study English Education, I hopes makes my parents proud with me in future. Be a Professional Teacher

Saying about career,  it makes me imagine if Indonesian have a good career did not know as a criminal or corruption. It was cool. And than, if you ask me about ‘ what are you long term career aspiration ? of course, my long term career will be a professional teacher. I think that my life just for a teacher career because my hobby is teach our students. So, I feel enjoyable to do my activities in delivering information, science, and knowledge. Teacher like the other career, because the teacher was provided some advantages in our life. I can change a students low ability to get a high level in learning, of course its need a kind of method will be makes their students interest to studying about the material. So, be a professional teacher is important  in my career aspiration. Her also called a woman career, but that’s all my aspiration to be a professional teacher have not get in easy point so I must be hard worker to get maximum result. And than, to realizing my long term career also have a good skill in my self.

As we know that teacher wages is not enough to suffice of life requirement in everyday. But it is not my big problem in this life, because knowledge can’t see by our wages but  how that knowledge can give benefit to other people around us is most important. So, besides a teacher I would like to do my career as lifecadet rock member at my village. I want to optimize my science that I have to progress my loving village. I think that teacher not only teach something worthwhile at school environment but also its can be implemented in societal life which its activity author cadet. At despite cadet rock is not gets wages like each job within my reason that I get alone satisfaction can do interaction with surrounding to open society view  that discourse teacher also need societal.

When you ask me, ‘what skill do you need to achieve these objectives ? actually, I need a motivation in this learning, and I get in speaking skill. I need speaking skill to achieve these objectives because I must be capable to speak in front of class with intonation, fluently, and accurate are good. While I explain the material also gives a motivation for students low ability. As a professional teacher, I have hopes in future to change the intelligence of society more than success in study with a high score, but our graduated have a skill to speech will self-confidence. In my thinking that the importance way to get a successful in this life is capable to makes another people fell comfortable with myself. So, it is not easy to be a professional teacher, we must care with our students and get support for them to studying especially English because according to our students that English is difficult lesson. I must be implementation in my speaking skill to change students low ability more interesting to studying in English lesson.

Beside to increasing of students ability with my skill, I also need speaking to certain our society consist to support my organization always go ahead in future with a new program. I need speaking skill to get self confidence when I speak in front of people in every meeting. I hopes to give best speech at introduce my program for my loving village. Beside it, with speaking skill I get a good relations with village officials to always communicate in every time. I am so happy, when I become a member of cadet rock. This is get a fact that teacher do not good to speak in front of class, but also the teacher can speak in front of many people in society of course use the objectives of speaking skill in our bodies.

In conclusion, between my long term career aspiration and a skill did I need to achieve these objectives have a correlation. My long term career aspiration as a professional teacher connected with a member of cadet rock in my loving village and also I need speaking skill to achieve these objectives. I have a purpose in my career as a teacher that I want to changes my student low ability have spirit to get high level  in this learning. So, I gives a motivation and support for them. I want who has graduated from school while get a good score also they capable to speech or do public speaking in English. Beside it, I would like to give many people such in society as a member of cadet rock that they must be do effectiveness of our skill in life especially of speaking skill to get best partner with organization . I would like be a people who has famous with their speaking to give a motivation to another people, such Mario Teguh in Golden Ways program in television channel. So, speaking is very important to be realize in my career aspiration be a professional teacher and a human with our benefit for my village. My Personal Statement

Learning is not separating with language, because language as a media to be understanding on delivering information for our students, especially in English learning. So what do you opinion about Learning uses English ? Learning English can be done everywhere in the world because English is widely used over the globe. However, if we want to learn English in such a natural and appropriate ways, English speaking country is one of the main solutions. Regarding with IELSP, I have several reasons why I insist to study English overseas country.

The first, I need to learn English in English speaking country or with native speaker. I am from country that it has two language was applied in their life such Indonesian language and mother tongue language. For example : Sundanese, Javanese, Lampungnese, etc. So, I want to learn English especially how to pronounce the words well. Some mistake like errors pronunciation will happen when I say some word without know these phonetics. This is an effect of used mother tongue language is very much than English. So, I hope that must be exercise to speak directly with a native-speakers of course in English speaking country.

The second, I need to get immersed in the US culture in order to support my English skill. Its conduct that culture gives stimuli to speak a language with different country. Such the culture between Indonesia and US is different, although they are same used English but sometimes we uses a word or sentence are different based on culture of those country. For example : This situation happen in the class, when the teachers’ was sneeze. If he were in Indonesia culture, he said ‘ Alhamdulillah’, and than their student answer it by say ‘Yaharmusukhalloh’, replay by teacher with ‘Hardikumullah’. This situation above is different when its happen in US culture. When the teachers was sneeze, he say ‘Excuse me’, and we answer its by saying ‘Bless you’, and the last teachers said ‘Thank you’. From this example above, it shows that the culture was supporting in English skill, so I want to get immersed in the US culture to increase my English skill.

The third, I need to learn how American apply the values of human right, democracy, freedom and so forth. Knowing, that American is big country  in the world. It has liberal democracy with the head of government is President was same with Indonesia. But, I do not know for the values of human right and freedom  still have the same with Indonesia. Because it, I feel interest to learn how American applied the values of human right and freedom as far we know that America has advantages makes other country afraid with him. Like America who killed each other country that’s issued of Terrorist. However, America is made of God, so in this time I would like to learn how these rule of development makes a constitution about human right and freedom which also apply in society or it just a paper in this country.

Besides my reason to study English in other country, I have a motivate to real it like three point bellow :

I still study in English Education and Teacher Training at University Muhammadiyah of Metro, so I have background study is English. It makes me motivate to learn English in English speaking country to be future as a teacher professional. Based on my linear study made an effect for my better knowledge and skill to improve at school. I can study English again with native speaker and it is not make difference with my background study. Beside this reason, for my opinion that IELSP plays a role as fund source and programs or provides fund for my study. Based on my condition in life that I am not from rich family, with IELSP programs makes me capable to always study English well beside I think that Education need much money, like study in college must be million fund. With this programs have benefit for poor family to always motivate that they capable to follow IELSP and study in English speaking country. And than for my future motivate that Jobs do not come to low quality of Education. So my future objective is to pursue Master degree in English Education.

            In conclusion, my background of education is English, and my current activities are teaching English and promoting English Literature, therefore, I am going to pursue my degree in Master of English Education because I will be expert in that field of study. [/su_spoiler] [/su_accordion]

Kemampuan menulis essay bahasa Inggris semakin dicari. Baik dalam pelajaran di sekolah, mata kuliah, tulisan opini di media berbahasa Inggris, bahkan untuk mendaftar beasiswa kuliah di luar negeri seperti LPDP. Padahal, menulis essay tidak mudah. Karena itu, tidak heran banyak yang mencari contoh essay bahasa Inggris.

Namun demikian, apa sebenarnya pengertian dari essay? Bagaimana cara menulis essay yang baik? Berikut akan dibahas apa dan bagaimana cara menulis essay serta contoh essay yang kami sudah rangkum untuk kamu. Mari kita lihat.

Apakah Itu Essay?

Essay adalah opini yang dijelaskan secara tertulis. Essay sangat berbeda dengan karya ilmiah atau scientific report, maupun berita atau news. Karya ilmiah dan berita menggunakan bahasa yang factual. Sedangkan essay menggabungkan fakta dan opini, pengetahuan dan imajinasi.

Struktur Essay Bahasa Inggris

Sebuah essay yang baik tentunya harus memiliki struktur yang jelas. Dengan demikian, essay bisa dibaca dengan enak dan tidak membingungkan. Sehingga apa yang ingin disampaikan bisa dipahami oleh pembaca.

Essay memiliki beberapa bagian, yaitu introduction atau pengantar, body atau pembahasan, dan conclusion atau kesimpulan. Berikut adalah bagian-bagian beserta contoh essay bahasa Inggris.

1. Introduction (Pengantar)

Paragraf pertama sebuah essay biasanya merupakan introduction atau pengantar. Kegunaan paragraf ini adalah mengenalkan pembaca kepada topik.

Paragraf ini memberikan gambaran definisi dari masalah, asumsi, definisi istilah-istilah yang digunakan, dan tujuan dari menulis esai. Di sini kita harus memberikan thesis atau kalimat yang mengandung topik utama essay. Kita juga harus memberikan sekilas argument apa saja yang disebutkan.

Akan tetapi, paragraf introduction tidak boleh terlalu panjang. Jangan sampai lebih panjang daripada 5% keseluruhan essay. Jadi, jika esainya sepanjang 500 kata, paragraph introduction tidak boleh lebih panjang daripada 25 kata. Berikut adalah contoh paragraf pembuka untuk esai bertema pendidikan atau education.

2. Body (Pembahasan)

Bagian utama essay adalah body paragraphs atau pembahasan. Bagian ini mencakup 85-90% dari keseluruhan essay.

Disebut body karena bagian utama essay adalah pembahasan. Jika introduction adalah kepala, maka badan atau body essay adalah pembahasan yang merupakan sebagian besar dari essay.

Setiap paragraf menjelaskan sebuah poin yang mengembangkan thesis. Poin-poin ini didukung dengan logika pribadi, teori atau bukti penelitian.

Struktur body paragraph adalah:

Topic sentence

Topic sentence atau kalimat utama berfungsi untuk menyebutkan poin utama paragraf. Kalimat ini mengandung ide utama paragraf.

Supporting sentences

Supporting sentences atau kalimat-kalimat pendukung berfungsi untuk menjabarkan ide utama paragraf. Klaim yang kamu buat di topic sentence harus bisa didukung dengan bukti. Jangan sampai membuat opini yang tidak memiliki dasar logis atau ilmiah.

Supporting sentences bisa menjelaskan statistik, kutipan, penalaran, contoh, atau penelitian yang bisa mendukung topik utama. Supporting sentences juga bisa memberikan definisi dari sebuah topik yang diangkat di topic sentence.

Concluding sentence

Concluding sentence adalah kalimat yang memberikan kesimpulan dari sebuah paragraf pembahasan. Concluding sentence menyatakan ulang poin yang dibuat dan dijelaskan dalam paragraf tersebut.

Tips Menulis Paper/Artikel Ilmiah Dalam Bahasa Inggris, PART 1: Useful Phrases for Academic Writing From Introduction to Conclusion

Melanjutkan tulisan saya sebelumnya tentang Menulis Proposal Riset Yang Menarik – How to Write a GOOD and APPEALING Research Proposal kali ini saya lengkapi dengan bahasan tentang bagaimana menulis paper dalam bahasa Inggris.Tentu bisa juga digunakan untuk penulisan proposal riset, karena intinya adalah bagaimana menulis ilmiah menggunakan bahasa Inggris, dan proposal merupakan atau bahkan sangat perlu untuk memperhatikan istilah, kaidah yang benar dalam penulisan ilmiah, khususnya bahasa Inggris

Menulis artikel/paper berbahasa Inggris merupakan suatu keniscayaan – kalau tidak mau dianggap – sebagai suatu kewajiban bagi mahasiswa, dosen dan peneliti saat ini. Terlebih untuk yang kuliah di luar negeri. Bukan sekedar karena mengejar paper masuk SCOPUS atau Web of Science (salah satu indexing jurnal terkenal), namun sebagai upaya agar hasil penelitian yang dilakukan bisa dibaca dan dimanfaatkan oleh semua orang, di seluruh dunia. Sehingga kemanfaatan dari suatu penelitian akan lebih banyak yang merasakan.

Tulisan ini merupakan “oleh-oleh” dari kegiatan “Faculty Science Camp” yang dilaksanakan LP3M UMY di Fakultas Pertanian pada hari Kamis, 11 Juli 2019. Kegiatan ini merupakan rangkaian kegiatan yang dilaksanakan dalam rangka meningkatkan kemampuan penulisan ilmiah tertama dalam bahasa Inggris bagi dosen/peneliti UMY, khususnya dosen Fakultas Pertanian tempat saya mengabdi.

Fokus pada tulisan ini adalah pada penggunaan bahasa Inggrisnya, jadi bagaimana menulis hasil penelitian menggunakan bahasa Inggris ilmiah. Mengenai tips penulisan konten paper, itu hal lainnya. Jadi disini penekanannya adalah bagaimana menggunakan bahasa Inggris ilmiah yang tepat untuk menulis paper ilmiah. Maklum, karena bahasa Inggris bukan bahasa ibu dan bukan bahasa resmi sehari-hari orang Indonesia, terkadang pengaruh tata bahasa Indonesia masih sangat berasa di tulisan-tulisan orang Indonesia (Indonesian English atau Javanese English and even Ngapak English…hehehe).

Ada 3 bagian tulisan mengenai topik ini ( Part 1 , Part 2 dan Part 3 ), mulai dari pendahuluan (yaitu di postingan ini/Part 1) yang berisi mengenai dasar-dasar bagian suatu artikel ilmiah beserta frasa/ungkapan bahasa Inggris yang umumnya dipakai di artikel ilmiah . Misalnya bagaimana menuliskan kalimat pembuka untuk bagian “ Introduction “, atau kalimat yang digunakan untuk mengungkapkan bagian “ methodology ” secara detail disertai contohnya. Part 2 lebih pada bagaimana memilih tenses yang digunakan pada tulisan ilmiah . Ya, tenses kadang menjadi momok bagi yang sedang belajar Bahas Inggris, maklum ada setidaknya 16 tenses. Namun apa semua harus dikuasai untuk menulis paper?…silakan baca detailnya di Part 2 . Sedangkan Part 3 atau terakhir khusus berbicara tentang “reporting verb” , ini juga salah satu yang perlu sekali dipahami saat menulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Misal literature review atau pembahasan dimana perlu mengutip tulisan orang lain yang kadang jumlah artikelnya sangat banyak sehingga terjadi pengulangan kata seperti:

“X states that….”, “Y says that….”, or “It is said that….”

Disclaimer : tulisan ini merupakan hasil catatan saya dan sebagian copy materi dari pembicara (info pembicara lihat references). Saya tuliskan di sini bukan berarti saya sudah mahir menulis paper berbahasa Inggris, saya juga masih dalam tahap belajar (Tolong jangan baca paper saya ya, jadi malu kalau ada yg baca paper berbahasa Inggris saya…langsung sitasi sj…hehehe).

Oke, kita lanjut ke inti dari artikel ini saja. Sebelumnya saya akan membahas tulisan ini bertahap sesuai tahapan dalam penulisan paper. Mulai dari abstract, introduction, method, result and discussion and conclusion (umumnya sistematika paper).

Abstract merupakan pengantar dan sekaligus “inti” dari suatu tulisan ilmiah. Dari abstrak kita bisa tahu apa sebenarnya keseluruah paper itu berbicara. Setidaknya ada 4 poin penting dalam abstrak:

• Goals/aims/purposes (reasearch questions)
• Methodology

Contoh abstrak (paper bahasa Inggris pertama saya…hehe)

Keywords Di akhir abstrak umumnya dituliskan keywords/kata kunci dari paper/abstrak tersebut. Keyword ini adalah “inti dari inti” (pinjam isitilah Pak Dul…hehe) dari suatu paper. Jadi kalau abstrak itu inti dari paper, kalau inti itu “diperas lagi” menjadi keywords. Ada juga yang berpendapat bahwa keywords berfungsi untuk membantu pada pencarian di mesin pencari/ search engine . Sehingga kalau orang mau mencari paper kita di internet, kata kunci apa yang digunakan. Setidaknya ada 3 hal penting yang menentukan suatu kata masul list keywords paper, yaitu :

• Merupakan variable significant in researchs
• Terdiri antara 3-6 keywords
• Untuk frasa (rangkaian istilah lebih dari satu kata) tidak masalah, selagi itu adalah istilah.

Present or Past tense?

Salah satu hal yang kadang ditanyakan pada penulisan abstrak adalah penggunaan bentuk Present atau Past tense. Mengenai hal ini, BOTH ACCEPTED , alias keduanya bisa digunakan pada penulisan abstrak.

Contoh penggunaan tenses dalam abstrac (Nurjannah, 2018)

Contoh Abstract:

Adolescent Smokers’ Perceived Risk of Cigarette Use

Little is known about risk perceptions of adolescents already engaged in risk behaviors. This study aims to  quantify adolescent smokers’ perceived risk of smoking and to explore the association of demographic and  social characteristics with this perceived risk. Data were obtained from the 2007 Minnesota Student Survey,  administered to a total of 136,549 students in grades 6, 9, and 12. The 15,562 students who identified  themselves as smokers were included in this study. The association between perceived risk of smoking and  demographic and social characteristics was explored through bivariate and multivariate analyses. Among all  smokers, 10.0% perceived no risk, 14.8% perceived slight risk, 29.3% perceived moderate risk, and 45.9%  perceived high risk of smoking. Perceptions of smoking risk varied significantly across demographic and  social groups in bivariate and multivariate analyses. Holding lower perceptions of smoking risk was associated with being younger, male, African American, receiving free or reduced-price lunch, having a lower GPA, more frequent cigarette use, friends’ approval of smoking, and lack of information about drugs and alcohol. Sources of drug information associated with higher perceived risk of smoking were friends/peers, school, and media. Adolescent smokers’ perceived risk of smoking varied from no to high risk. Variations in smoking risk perception across demographic and social groups point to potential targets for smoking education as well as strategies likely to increase the effectiveness of smoking education.

Introduction sesuai namanya adalah bagian pendahuluan atau awal suatu tulisan. Setelah menulis abstrak, maka bagian inilah yang mengawali suatu paper. Umumnya berisi hal-hal berikut:

• Identify the study population (ex: age, gender, and other characteristics) & give rationale
• Explain the analytical methods used.

Abstract —ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community(ASCC) 2015 are waiting in a month, people in union countries commit the goals for making stability, prosperity in the area and mutually reinforcing among ASEAN countries by 2015. The values, ideas, and forms of interactions and communications which are happening people to people, contribute how the social dimension looks like among its Member States. Inversely to what reality reflected, The condition shows there are miss strategy and communication between government and publics about the values of the cultural and social development in reaching the goals. To fulfill its dream, We, as Indonesians, have to put much effort in overcoming the problems of 6 musts of characteristic concepts from right now.

                                                                                                                                                                     I. Introduction

While thinking of the word ‘ready’ refers to the motion of the body or a matter in a situation which is fully prepared or suitable to do an action. We, as Indonesian shall be faced a situation that we, ASEAN societies, and develop together to be a strong union by 2015. Do Indonesians know about the ASCC? Almost of the people, especially villagers, youth, and old people in the middle-under economy class, do not know about ASCC.

• Background Of ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC)

In 1997, ASEAN Vision had agreed along with ten countries includes Indonesia by 2020. This commitment in purpose to create stability, prosperity in the area and mutually reinforcing among ASEAN countries. At 12th ASEAN Summit, they all (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Philippines, Lao PDR, Viet Nam, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia) on13th January 2007 in Cebu, Philippines declared and signed the ASEAN Vision to be accelerated by 2015. The ASEAN Community comprised of three main pillars such as:

• ASEAN Political And Security Community
• ASEAN Economic Community
• ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community

At the 13th ASEAN Summit on 20th November 2007 an ASCC (ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community) Blueprint is agreed to be developed to ensure the concrete action to achieving solidarity and unity. Among the union countries are responsible to build society the well-being characteristic, caring the harmonious livelihood, and developing the friendly environment.

The socialization of the ASCC program promotion is only focusing on the people in middy and upper economy class. While the primary goal is reaching all the ASEAN societies. It comes inversely to what reality reflected. This condition shows there are miss strategy and communication between government and publics about the values of the cultural and social development.

Cultures has equaled to social, and vice versa. These two aspects are inseparable, they like the two sides of a coin. Moreover, the values, ideas, and forms of interactions and communications of people to people contribute the social dimension towards bridging the gap of development among its Member States.

                                                                                                                                 II. literature review or related work

• The differences in economic rate and phenomena among the ASEAN members are the challenges for them in establishing great ASEAN Socio-cultural community 2015.
• Human Development Sector will enhance the well-being societies in the South East Asia in ensuring the integration of ASEAN’s development agenda on education priorities.
• Committing to heightening the well-being and the livelihood of ASEAN societies through ensuring social welfare and protection by improving the quality, coverage and sustainability.
• Values of promoting and implementing social justice and people’s rights based on the law or applied-constitutions dispassionately into its policies and all sectors of life to raise the quality of life and standard of living when aboard to other countries.
• Working together with the members towards achieving sustainable development by promoting both clean and green environment in facing global environmental challenges is the way how to build the next ASEAN faces.
• Socio-cultural community has targeted programs in building the ASEAN identity to the world about their history, culture, religion, and civilization.
• Strengthen cooperation to reduce the gap of development in every particular the social dimensions of ASEAN union.

• Characteristic 1: Human Development

ASEAN is committed in Human Development Sector will enhance the well-being societies by facilitating the access like building education and human resource training, promote the use of English Language, ICT and applied science and technology, and any socio-cultural development activities.

In fact, we can see the lack of many human resources caused by all the aspects above have not been implemented well yet. Based on the occupation of Indonesians, almost of them are farmers. They have not got adequate education, better training, and neither English nor ICT skills in every region of Indonesia. We do believe that most of them do not understand what is ASCC 2015 when it be asked for them. How can we fully prepared do Human development If the main figures do not know it well yet.

• Characteristic 2: Social Welfare and Protection

ASEAN is committed to heightening the well-being and the livelihood of ASEAN societies through ensuring social welfare and protection by easing the poverty, building a safe area, drug free environment, and increasing the health awareness area

In fact, Indonesian government still has many ‘homeworks’ in case of all social welfare and protection aspects. The poverty is still an old case which never been lost since past. If we look at the almost publics in the east region of Indonesia that it’s still in the worst situation. They cannot enjoy as same as what people in west region got. In addition, this area still unsafe completely for them, and poor of health awareness. These problems make them at higher risks of criminal includes the drug environment. In the results, societies run in the back and have less knowledge of ASCC 2015.

• Characteristic 3: Social Justice and Rights

ASEAN is committed to promoting and implementing social justice and people’s rights based on the law or applied-constitutions dispassionately into its policies and all sectors of life. The groups of people are composed of four main cicles such as children, persons with disabilities, women, and the elderly.

In fact, when we heard about Indonesian labor and Female labors go to neighboring countries like Malaysia and Singapore, societies will be scared directly and imagined about violence and torture cases in which are shown in mass media. The existence of human trafficking (women and children) adding other samples, which has proven us that we have a lack of social justice and people’s rights to protect them. Do the victims know that ASCC 2015 promoting and implementing social justice and people’s rights? If yes, it will never happen!

• Characteristic: Ensuring Environmental Sustainability

ASEAN should work towards achieving sustainable development by promoting both clean and green environment in facing global environmental challenges by 2015. The protections of water, forest, mineral, energy, coastal, biodiversity, and marine resources is to improving environmental problems.

In fact, what is happening now in Indonesia that people live and life without good management in keeping natural resources. We still can see the trashes in the river in the capital city in Indonesia, Jakarta. Other pollution problems which appear in the Kalimantan Island and Riau which disturbs Malaysia and Singapore are the examples that Indonesia do not know how to keep clean and green environment in ensuring environmental sustainability in South East Asia. Societies still life and live without a better mechanism in loving the environment as one of the ASEAN goals.

• Characteristic 5: Building the ASEAN Identity

The ASEAN socio-cultural community program has targets in building the ASEAN identity to the world. Identity is how it shows by looking at the collective personality, norms societies have, values and beliefs. By ASCC, Indonesia will develop the mainstream of greater awareness and values in the spirit of unity in diversity (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika) which is as our national motto.

In fact, societies do not know that unity in diversity means, what region, race, religion, skin, and ethnic are you now can be separate the unity which ASEAN has committed. The real case is when one of the government is not a Muslim as Indonesia majority now they demonstrate in the ring road of Jakarta to fall down the governor just because different belief. This reflects that they did not know the spirit of unity in diversity as Neither Indonesia nor ASEAN Community has. So, how can Indonesian are fully prepared for building the ASEAN Identity?

• Characteristic 6: Narrowing the Development Gap

Strengthen cooperation to reduce the gap of development in every particular the social dimensions between the ASEAN-6 (Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand) and the CLMV (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam) countries. So there is no isolated place and gap among these countries. In result, We, ASEAN Countries, develop together to reach the goals.

In fact, When we see the real situation in Indonesia, compare how people in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya (Big Cities) live and life to the other small region. For the example people in the borders, and suburb cannot get good infrastructures as big Cities have. So, how borders people will 100% know about the ASCC 2015 if they have not have adequate infrastructures.

                                                                                                                                                                       V. conclusion

ASEAN members face quite a number of challenges of characteristics in ASCC towards achieving their goal of setting up an ASEAN community. Despite all these, by seeing the real situation or phenomena in fact which are happening in Indonesia now and compare to the goals of the characteristics in ASEAN Socio-cultural Community, we Indonesians shall know it before to prepare fully in facing ASCC 2015. To fulfill its dream, We, as Indonesians, have to put much effort in solving the problems from right now. Then, the implementation of 6 musts of characteristics concept which are going, shall be monitored, managed and reviewed well by the ASEAN Secretariat to ensure that all the activities will be responsive.

Biasanya, tugas baca cerita ini dikerjain pas gue masuk sekolah setelah liburan semester gitu. Jadi, dulu guru gue suka ngasih tugas buat nulis cerita selama liburan dalam bahasa Inggris.

Nah, dulu, gue tuh nyeritainnya pas lagi liburan di kampung alias rumah kakek-nenek. Terus, hasil cerita tentang liburannya ini disuruh bacain tepat di depan kelas. Tapi, dulu gue nggak tahu kalau tugasnya itu namanya essay dalam Bahasa Inggris.

Pada saat itu, gue ngira kalau guru gue cuma ngasih tugas buat murid-muridnya buat cerita pengalaman liburan aja. Pas gue cari tahu, ternyata tugas yang sering gue bikin itu namanya essay.

Tapi sebenarnya, essay itu apa, sih? Awalnya, gue pikir kalau essay itu cuma sekadar tulisan panjang yang kompleks banget penjelasannya. Ternyata, gue salah paham soal si essay ini.

Makanya, gue mau ngajak elo buat belajar materi essay bahasa Inggris supaya kita sama-sama nggak salah paham, nih.

Apa Itu Essay dalam Bahasa Inggris?

Oke, jadi apa itu essay atau esai? Menurut pengertian dari Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), essay adalah karangan prosa yang membahas suatu masalah secara sepintas, dan dari sudut pandang penulisnya .

Maksudnya gimana, tuh?

Simpelnya, essay ini merupakan salah satu karya tulis berisi berbagai paragraf yang menyatukan fakta serta opini dalam sebuah topik. 

Jadi, di dalam essay nggak cuma ada fakta aja, atau, nggak cuma ada opini si penulis aja. Tapi, kedua hal tersebut digabungkan sehingga menghasilkan karya tulis.

Contohnya, judul essay-nya ini apel. Nah, di teks deskripsi itu elo bakal jelasin semua tentang apel. Mulai dari warna, rasa, sampai olahannya.

• Teks Persuasif

Terakhir, jenis essay dalam Bahasa Inggris yang perlu elo tahu lagi yaitu teks persuasif. Jadi, teks persuasif ini merupakan teks yang berisikan argumen. Makanya, sering juga dikenal sebagai teks argumentatif . 

Nah, di teks persuasif, penulis biasanya bakal membuka tulisan dengan pendapat umum dari sebuah topik. Di paragraf selanjutnya, baru deh didukung sama berbagai argumen yang pro dan kontra tentang pendapat tersebut.

Cukup unik dan berbeda, kan? Makanya, di bagian akhir ini biasanya penulis bakal ngasih penegasan ulang tentang argumen tersebut.

As online learning becomes more common and more and more resources are converted to digital form, some people have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and, in their place, everyone should be given an iPad with an e-reader subscription.

Proponents of this idea state that it will save local cities and towns money because libraries are expensive to maintain. They also believe it will encourage more people to read because they won’t have to travel to a library to get a book; they can simply click on what they want to read and read it from wherever they are. They could also access more materials because libraries won’t have to buy physical copies of books; they can simply rent out as many digital copies as they need.

However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. First, digital books and resources are associated with less learning and more problems than print resources. A study done on tablet vs book reading found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, retain 20% less information, and understand 10% less of what they read compared to people who read the same information in print. Additionally, staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause numerous health problems, including blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain, at much higher instances than reading print does. People who use tablets and mobile devices excessively also have a higher incidence of more serious health issues such as fibromyalgia, shoulder and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle strain. Barricade warfare has occurred across several spectra, but most notably, it occurred almost exclusively in a 300-year period between the 16th and 19th centuries. Each instance had an inciting incident, but a common thread was the culture of revolution: a revolutionary tradition based on the belief that injustice was being carried out and that, in this case, barricade insurgency was the way to resolve it. 

This study uses the theories of Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim to analyze barricade warfare, its appearance, and its disappearance. Ultimately, neither theory can independently explain this phenomenon. 

Marx offers a reasonable explanation for why barricade warfare may have died, but his theory is difficult to test empirically and fails to explain the absence of recurrences. Conversely, Durkheim’s theory is much easier to observe and can explain why barricade warfare has not experienced a renaissance. However, he offered no reason as to why it died in the first place.

How the Harry Potter Series Became So Popular

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many blockbuster films to its name, the series has amassed about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did this phenomenon become what it is? For those scratching their heads, the reason can be broken down into several areas: Rowling garnered a generous initial contract for her book, separate book covers were created for both teens and adults, midnight releases/promotions/pre-orders made the public more fanatic about the series, and fan blogs were rampant. In fact, these are just a few of the main reasons why Harry Potter took off the way it did. 

The first book in the series, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. At the time, Rowling was living on benefits as a single mother, so receiving this contract was her first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was adored by children and adults alike, and this had much to do with the popularity of the initial book and the series as a whole (Rappaport, Sarah).

In light of this, her publisher made separate covers for young readers and adults. According to BusinessInsider.com, “Adults love reading the Harry Potter books, but few want to be seen toting around a child’s book. To make it easier for adults, Bloomsbury Publishing, the British publishing house that first bought the rights to Rowling’s books, published a second version of the books with “adult” (i.e., less colorful and more boring) book covers” (Aquino, Judith). This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series. This is not an easy feat for young adult fiction .

Another factor that worked like a charm was that when the Harry Potter series became an obvious success, the publisher, and Rowling herself through her own website for the books, conducted midnight releases, special promotions, and pre-ordering to engage readers even more. According to BusinessInsider.com, “Starting with the fourth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, crowds of people wearing black robes, ties and round-frame glasses began showing up at bookstores for midnight release parties in 2000. Customers who feared their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies prior to the July 8, 2000 release date, according to Gunelius . 

The seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series became the fastest-selling book in history, reports The New York Times, with more than 11 million copies sold during the first 24 hours in three markets alone” (Aquino, Judith). The fandom around the books created more lucrative opportunities for the series.

Also, based on fans, blogs were created that were dedicated to the story, details, plot, characters, and much more about the series. In the beginning, Rowling did not have too much in the way of advertising, and the fans did a lot of work for her. According to HubSpot, “The fans took over and created many viral campaigns on her behalf talking about the excitement they had over upcoming releases. Harry Potter is often a trending topic on Twitter, Facebook events and pages are abundant and thousands of bloggers create posts on their behalf. These promotions are more genuine because they come from the source, the fans, instead of the person who makes a profit” (Leist, Rachel). This organic advertising propelled the Harry Potter novel series into being the most successful one ever.

Now that Rowling has sold millions of copies of her Harry Potter books and has seen each one adapted into films, merchandise, fan art, and more, we can safely say that this series is a global phenomenon. Through an initial contract, advertising for both teens and adults, special releases and parties, and organic advertising from fans via the internet, Harry Potter and his universe took over as the most successful bestselling book of all time. We are easily tempted to think that we should always fight fire with fire : that is, to engage aggressive violence—organized or unorganized—with equally coercive countermeasures. One of the most peculiar kind of organized violenced, and might be the most problematic to deal with, would be terrorism.

Dealing with terrorism poses several problems, for the main target of it is not of battlefield victory, but maximum disorganization and chaos in society being targeted. The number of deaths caused by terrorism would never exceed half the casualties of war or genocide, but even the United States itself proclaimed that terrorism made them “vulnerable” and “fragile”, thus the beginning of the War on Terror since 911 attack (Pinker, 2011).

The War on Terror is an inevitable consequence of our tendency to engage coercive measures as mentioned above. It is far easier to just punish the action immediately and prevent similar actions in the future by that, rather than using some other way to banish the root cause of the problem, or redirect the problematic actions.

As John Horgan puts it : The issue then becomes not ‘How do we fight terrorism?’, but ‘Why aren’t we doing it in ways we all seem to agree on as being appropriate?’. In short, why take time to think while it is so much easier to shoot?

Afterall, terrorism remains. Along with an increasing awareness of coercive counter-strategy’s partial success in abolishing terrorism, diffferent perspectives are taken. Rather than “How do we fight terrorism?”, we could ask “What is the root cause of terrorism?”, a question with comparable complexity.

Or rather, we could ask “How does terrorism end?”. With this last question, we can think differently to direct a substantial amount of resources towards what really causes terrorism to diminish. As with the fire analogy, fighting fire with fire would never put the fire out.

What works is dividing the fire, or better still, to redirect its energy into a beneficial mechanism. This essay aimed to provide a connceptual recommendations of the redirection approach against terrorism, and how young generation should—or rather, must—have a role in it.

            The (un)holy Crusaders

            One of the key signatures of a successful terrorist organization is its ability to cultivate morale. That is, roughly, orchestrating the factors needed to turn an ordinary oppressed person into a militia or pure anarchist (which is not an easy task).

According to Helmus (2009) , there are a few factors that contributes in the making of a terrorist, including motivational factors (sense of urgency and passion for change), perception of rewards, and group socialization process.

These are essential for a potential terrorist. Maintaining a sense of urgency or a passion for change is much easier if you are in the middle of an oppressing force delivered towards your country. It is harder to develop in a more peaceful state, let alone teaching heavenly gains of martyrdom in a secularized society.

But it is already done anyway. More often than not, a terrorist cell begins as gangs of young man hanging in cafes or dorms that suddenly find meaning in the new platoon of this organization (Pinker, 2011). This group commitment, according to Pinker, intensified by religious values, that is “not just the literal promise of paradise but the feeling of spiritual awe that comes from submerging oneself in a crusade, a calling, a vision quest, or a jihad”.

Why would terrorist organizations willing to go such lenghts just to create panic in society? Because panic is the goal. The whole point is to create fear and disorganization as great as possible, and make political changes as significant as possible, while maintaining the smallest amount of casualties. This deliberate act of generating fear would need strategy and group cohesion, and that is why morale is essential.

Such an organized effort to cultivate morale would be very hard to diminish if we just focus on the root factors. What, then, is the better strategy? One of them is shifting our concern to what really ends terrorisms.

             What Ends Terrorism, and The Role of Young Generation

            Gvineria (2009) explains some factors contributing to end terrorism, and one of them is emergence of new alternatives to terrorism . To put it simple, this factor involves new alternatives for terrorist organization to change its modus operandi : other organized criminal behavior, traditional ways of warfare and revolution, or legitimate political process.

Other factors, such as loss of its leaders or repression through state action can also contribute to end terrorism, but this new alternative approach presents more advantage. First, its lack of coercive measures can prevent negative publicity towards the government.

Coercive measures, such as execution of terrorist leaders in public with unintended casualties, if not used in caution can promote sympathy for the terrorist’s cause and weaken the state’s claim on legitimacy in the eyes of its citizens and the international community (Gvineria, 2009).

Second, the option of exposing the benefits of joining legitimate political movement can also provide the government with valuable advantage: human resources. A handful of people formerly oppressed, usually educated, with a lot of experience moving in the grassroots, and extreme dedication to bring change into society is the best human resource the government can get.

Why waste such valuable people in prison? And so, as described above, a lot of potential terorists are usually young men with high sense of commitment towards their group. These potential terrorists are also vulnerable to inducement, especially with their peers, to join political movements for their lack of experience in the field of politics itself.

If their peers can present a logical explanation about how politics can actually be an alternative to bring their means into realization, we wouldn’t have wasted money on bullets. Seeing the alternative, the conformity inside the terrorist group start to crumble, and that would also affect the generational transitions. In the end, the ones left would be the high ranking officers, and without support of potential personnels, they would be vulnerable.

As said above, the role young generations should take is the role of inducing rational means to join political movements. Its power would be of group pressure over individual, which is tremendous. One thing we should take notice is that to counter an organized effort, we need to develop an equally organized one. Presented below are recommendations to make this idea more systematized.

            Redirecting the Fire

            My approach recommendation can be considered the most uncoercive approach towards diminishing terrorism, compared to total banishment of it through military force, or even killing the high ranking leaders (which can often backfires, as explained above). A strategic recommendations, in an effort to create a more organized countermeasure against terrorism, while involving young generations, is needed at this level :

• Government need to develop a cooperating relationship with youth and student organizations, especially with politically oriented ones. This kinds of student organization have the strongest capability to induce political values and urgency among other students.
• Government then, based on this cooperating relationship, need to devise a mandatory program with the main objective of banishing terrorist movements among students (involving the inducement operations). The student political organizations are the ones responsible running the program.
• To join a legitimate political movements, terrorist or potential terrorist must have a strong incentive (Gvineria, 2009). This is also government’s task to orchestrate a cause for them, depending on the situations, so they will only see disadvantages by continuing to struggle.

A final note : these recommendations are best implemented in a relatively stable society. It would be much harder if advised on a conflicting country, with very high level of disorder among the society.

Also, notice that I am not trying to put aside the role of coercive countermeasures, becaue these approaches also work depending on the circumstances. These recommendations are still imperfect to end the struggle against terrorism, but i hope it would present some different perspective for a solution.

Format Penulisan Essay Bahasa Inggris

Paragraf pertama dalam sebuah essay biasanya merupakan introduction atau pengantar. Paragraf ini memberikan gambaran definisi dari masalah, asumsi, definisi istilah-istilah yang ada, dan tujuan dari menulis essay.

Pada pargraf ini kita perlu memberikan kalimat utama yang mengandung topik utama essay. Kita juga harus memberikan sekilas argument. Paragraf introduction tidak boleh terlalu panjang atau melebihi panjang daripada 5% keseluruhan essay.

Bagian utama essay adalah body paragraphs atau pembahasan. Bagian ini mencakup 85-90% dari keseluruhan essay. Setiap paragraf pada bagian ini mengembangkan dari topik utama. Poin-poin di dalamnya berisi logika pribadi, teori, atau buku penelitian

Struktur dari body paragraphs adalah sebagai berikut:

a. Topic Sentence

Topic sentence merupakan kalimat utama yang berfungsi untuk menyebutkan poin utama paragraf dan mengandung ide utama paragraf.

b. Supporting Sentence

Supporting sentence merupakan kalimat-kalimat pendukung yang berfungsi untuk menjabarkan ide utama paragraf. Dalam supporting sentence perlu didukung dengan opini yang memiliki dasar logis atau ilmiah.

Supporting sentence bisa menjelaskan statistik, kutipan, penalaran, contoh, atau penelitian yang bisa mendukung topik utama.

c. Concluding Sentence

Concluding sentence adalah kalimat yang memberikan kesimpulan dari sebuah paragraf pembahasan.

3. Conclusion

Conclusion atau kesimpulan merupakan pargraf terakhir yang menyimpulkan isi essay. Paragraf kesimpulan berisi sekitar 5-10% dari keseluruhan essay.

Penutup harus bisa menjawab persoalan yang ada pada bagian pembukaan. Selain itu, kita dapat memberikan usulan atau saran bagi permasalahan yang dibahas di dalam essay.
