Shortly after reaching an agreement to avoid legal action , the United States Postal Service -inspired Nike Air Force 1 Experimental “Postal Ghost” now has an official release date.

Openly drawing from the iconic tones of the USPS, the reimagined AF1 model is dressed with a clean white molded marked by “Air Force 1” throughout. Additional detailing comes in the form of “Ashen Slate” on the inner liner and padded tongues, while “Game Royal” hits are introduced with the toggle pull underneath the traditional lacing. Aside “N.354” applied on the midfoot Swooshes, branding is expressed through shipping labels at the heel, upside-down “ NIKE AIR” embroidery at the rear and printed insoles. Elevating the shoe is a white tone midsole and contrasting gray rubber outsole.

Nike’s controversial ‘USPS’ Air Force 1 shoe finally drops this month

Unofficial, criticized, and then official.

The long saga of Nike’s unsanctioned-turned-sanctioned USPS Air Force 1 will finally come to a close at the top of the month.

Nike has confirmed a May 28 release for the controversial sneaker, which sparked criticism and threats of legal action from the United States Postal Service. Surprisingly, the two parties were able to come to terms on the yet-to-be-released sneaker and go forward with the Air Force 1 being officially licensed by the Postal Service.

Officially known as the Air Force 1 Experimental “Postal Ghost,” the sneaker could have just been a cheeky bit of inspiration that arrived to little fanfare. But because of the story that’s unfolded since the sneaker leaked, the AF1 is now likely to be an instant collector’s item.

How did we get here? —  Until now, Nike had never officially unveiled its USPS-inspired Air Force 1. Images of the sneaker, which riffs on Priority Mail packaging, first leaked in early March, and it took nearly a month for the Postal Service to notice. When the USPS did in fact notice, it issued a public statement criticizing Nike for stealing its intellectual property and threatening to take legal action if necessary.

“The Postal Service, which receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations, protects its intellectual property,” the USPS said. “Officially licensed products sold in the marketplace expand the affinity for the Postal Service brand and provide incremental revenue through royalties that directly support it. Sales of unauthorized and unlicensed products deny support to the hardworking women and men of the Postal Service.”

Timing made the story particularly rich, as Nike was then in the middle of going after MSCHF for its “Satan Shoes” made in collaboration with Lil Nas X. Here was one of the biggest retailers in the world going after a small Brooklyn art collective for trademark infringement while at the same time taking motifs from a government agency.

Nike already had a history of treading on other parties’ intellectual property rights, and the USPS was quick to call the brand out for its hypocrisy. “This is an unfortunate situation where a brand as large as Nike, which aggressively protects its own intellectual property, has chosen to leverage another brand for its own gain,” the Postal Service said.

And now, resolution — After a month without any updates, the USPS and Nike were able to come to an agreement outside of court that would guarantee the sneaker’s sanctioned release. The vacuum-sealed, sticker-covered sneaker will allow you to take part in the narrative as it releases on the SNKRS app at 10 a.m. ET this Friday, May 28.

For those able to cop, the Air Force 1 will set you back $130. But what we really want to know — and likely never will because of the nature of private settlements — is just how much the shoe cost Nike.

Here's When the USPS x Nike Air Force 1 Experimental Drops

The controversial collab has received an official release date..

Shortly after reaching a partnership agreement, Nike and the USPS have announced the official release date for their collaborative Air Force 1 Experimental.

The team-up has been months in the making — when Nike unveiled preliminary images of an AF1 decorated with USPS branding, the Postal Service said it would “take whatever actions it deems necessary to protect its valuable IP rights.” In addition, customers pointed out that Nike’s decision to release a shoe unauthorized by the USPS — which receives no tax dollars and relies on shipping product sales — was questionable at best. In early May, the two parties reached a deal to drop the sneaker as an official partnership, meaning the USPS will receive a portion of profits.

The Nike Air Force 1 Experimental is set to release in a new colorway that nods to the United States Postal Service (USPS).

Dressed in a White, Ghost, Ashen Slate, and Game Royal color scheme. This Nike Air Force 1 features a White molded upper with “Air Force 1” text throughout the entire shoe. Slate Blue padded tongues, inner liner, heel branding, and rubber outsole with Red and Royal Blue contrasting accents throughout. An inspired “USPS” shipping label on the heels completes the design.

Sneaker brands have always flirted with the boundary of paying homage and taking a design and making it their own. As the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (that mediocrity can pay to greatness). When it comes to drawing inspiration from pop culture, no brand does it as well and as often as Nike. While normally not an issue, the Nike Air Force 1 Experimental “Postal Ghost” was a point of contention to the United States Postal Service.

The clear and obvious inspiration from the USPS didn’t sit well with the company, especially with the economic hardship and backlog of work resulting from COVID-19. After the USPS threatened to sue the Swoosh, the USPS and Nike settled to work as one.

Following the agreement, the Nike Air Force 1 Experimental “Postal Ghost” will release at the end of May. With a release date of May 28 with a retail price tag of $130, the USPS-inspired pair from Nike might be one of the most coveted Nike Air Force 1 Experimental  ever  as a result of its murky backstory.

In a year filled with lawsuits and controversy, the Nike legal team has surely been busy. Already pursuing a multitude of claims against MSCHF, the company that produced the Lil Nas X “Satan Shoe,” the United States Postal Service has flipped the tide pursuing a lawsuit against Nike’s recent Air Force 1 Experimental .

A public relation’s official for the postal firm recently announced the following statement about protecting its rights:

The Postal Service, which receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations, protects its intellectual property. Officially licensed products sold in the marketplace expand the affinity for the Postal Service brand and provide incremental revenue through royalties that directly support it. Sales of unauthorized and unlicensed products deny support to the hardworking women and men of the Postal Service. This is an unfortunate situation where a large brand such as Nike, which aggressively protects its own intellectual property, has chosen to leverage another brand for its own gain. The Postal Service is disappointed in Nike’s lack of response to repeated attempts to come to a solution. The Postal Service will take whatever actions it deems necessary to protect its valuable IP rights.” -USPS Statement Issued 4/1/21

Clearly inspired by the USPS shipping box, the controversial Nike colorway hasn’t been announced for release. It’ll be interesting to see how the Oregon-based firm proceeds, especially taking on the role of the defendant.
