The Dragonet Prophecy by Tui T. Sutherland has been reviewed by Focus on the Family’s marriage and parenting magazine . It is the first book in the “Wings of Fire” series.

Plot Summary

In this book, the characters are dragons, and a war rages between the dragon tribes in the land of Pyrrhia. According to prophecy, the bloodshed will only cease when five remarkable dragonets, young dragons, are born and trained to stop the fighting.

A group of dragons called the Talons of Peace seeks to fulfill the prophecy by collecting five special eggs, born on the brightest night. The dragonets must come from the tribes of the SeaWings, NightWings, SkyWings, MudWings and SandWings. But one of the warring queens purposely breaks the SkyWing egg, causing the dragonet caretakers to make a last minute change of plans. Though it is outside the prophecy, they quickly substitute a RainWing egg.

The story picks up six years later and is told through the eyes of a dragonet named Clay. He and his friends, Tsunami, Sunny, Starflight and Glory (the RainWing dragonet) live beneath a mountain. They are under the care and training of the Talons of Peace supporters, dragons named Kestrel, Dune and Webs. When the dragonets decide to escape from the cave where they live, they and their guardians are captured by Scarlet, the fierce SkyWing queen. Scarlet makes her prisoners battle in an arena. She pits them against her champion, a dragon named Peril, whose mere touch sets others ablaze. Despite their strained circumstances, Peril and Clay become friends.

The dragonets make several thwarted escape attempts. Scarlet puts Kestrel on trial, and Peril discovers Kestrel is her mother. Burn, one of the hopefuls to be queen of the SandWings, visits Scarlet. When they learn Scarlet plans to give Sunny to Burn as a gift, the dragonets are all the more anxious to escape. Queen Scarlet puts on an elaborate show for her guests by pitting some of the dragonets against one another in the arena. When the excitement doesn’t satisfy her, she puts Clay and Peril together to fight. They battle, trying to figure out how not to kill each other. At a critical moment, Glory attacks Scarlet with her powerful poison. The dragonets, with Peril’s help, make their escape. They invite Peril to join them, but she feels she has work to do on herself before she can be the dragon of her destiny.

Clay and Glory choose to search for Clay’s parents. They find his mother, a disinterested dragon that had sold her egg because she didn’t need it. Though Clay is disappointed that his mother doesn’t care to know him, he is pleased to meet his siblings. Clay comes to realize that to fulfill his destiny, he must be himself, take care of his friends and find a way to fulfill the prophesy.

Christian Beliefs

Other belief systems.

Different types of dragons have special powers. NightWings, for example, can read minds, see the future and deliver prophesies. When the dragonets try to escape from Kestrel, they wonder if they need a magic word, talisman or the aid of an animus dragon. Animus dragons were supposed to have power over objects. Dragons in the stadium think the arrival of the dragonets is an omen. Everything the dragonets are taught about the outside world comes from Talons of Peace scrolls. Clay prays hard, meaning he’s trying to communicate telepathically into the minds of other MudWings.

Authority Roles

Queen Scarlet and Burn both demonstrate violence and cruelty toward their underlings, taking pleasure in observing bloody battles between their prisoners. Kestrel raises the dragonets without love or kindness. She behaves with ambivalence even when she learns Peril is her daughter. Clay’s birth mother admits to having sold his egg and says she doesn’t know who fathered him. She shows no love for or even interest in him when he appears at her door.

Profanity & Violence

The word heck appears once.

Heads of prey bounce across the grass. Blood spurts and pours out of headless bodies. Dragons lash at each other with their claws, tearing and ripping into each others’ flesh and wings and gouging into open scars. Chilling cracks are often heard as dragons break each others’ necks or bones. Peril scorches, melts and scars others, leaving disfiguring burns. Glory’s poison disintegrates other dragons; the poison eats into their open wounds. Bloody, rotting dragon corpses litter the ground after several battles. Dragons and dragon eggs are often pushed or dropped from high places to kill them.

Queen Scarlet punishes a SeaWing dragon that refuses to fight, making it go without water for months. The slow dehydration leaves the dragon desperate, mentally unstable and ready for battle.

Sexual Content

Clay’s mother tells him she doesn’t know who fathered him. She says their tribe has a breeding night once a month. Then everyone returns to his or her own sleeping quarters.

So I began this series a LONG time ago. I'm almost finished with all the prophecys and the whole series. This book I recommend because it is great. If you love dragons, read this. The story is amazing and when I read it, I got swallowed in the book. It was so good. With the personality of each of the dragons and how each dragon has there own traits and abilitys is mind blowing. It is also kinda of a good mystery, and a shocker. I dont want to give two much away, but it is a great book that you should read.

Wings of fire is 100% the best series ever! I'm reading the series for the eighth time and am currently on the sixth book. But this is about the the first book, The Dragonet Prophecy, a fantasy written by Tui T. Sutherland. It's about five dragonets, a SeaWing, SandWing, MudWing, NightWing and SkyWing (The SkyWing was killed as an egg so they replace it with a RainWing) who are chosen to stop a war that has been raging on for eighteen years. The Dragonets are raised in a hidden cave under a mountain. They have not been outside for even two seconds of their life. When the Dragonets realize that Glory (RainWing) is in danger of being killed by their guardians because she is not the SkyWing that the Prophecy "needs" they decide to escape from under the mountain and risk everything just to save Glory. Even if it means getting captured by the evil SkyWing queen and nearly getting them all killed.

kingofeels

I have talked(repeatedly) about the series Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland in two of my blog posts. The 4th is even resting beside me, three quarters of the way finished, as I’m typing these exact words(I’m also in my pajamas, but nobody needs to know that). And yet I haven’t, for some totally and completely bizarre reason, mentioned, even once, these books in any of my reviews. Today we’re going to change that. To start from the beginning, I’ll tell you about the first in the series, The Dragonet Prophecy. I got introduced with these books in 2nd grade by a friend, and fell in love with them. There’s nothing more adventurous, friendship-inspiring, and suspenseful than this series. Tui has a truly special way of writing to captivate the reader and immerse them in a world of magic and dragons. She is one of my favorite authors out there.

The Dragonet Prophecy starts because of a Sandwing war. The former queen, Oasis, was killed by scavengers and her three daughters, Blister, Blaze, and Burn, were left to determine who would now be the ruler, dragging the whole dragon continent, Pyrrhia, into a raging war. Blister got alliance with the Seawings and Queen Coral, while Blaze allied with Queen Glacier of the Icewings and most of the Sandwings. Burn sought allegiance with Queen Moorhen and the Mudwings, as well as Queen Scarlet of the Skywings. The Rainwings, in the rain forest kingdom, and the Nightwings, hidden in their mysterious home, were not involved in the war. The Nightwings themselves were busy foreseeing the Dragonet Prophecy, which foretold of five dragons born on the night when all three moons were to be full. Those dragonets, when they got older, were supposed to choose a queen and stop the great war.  But problems arose from the start when the Talons of Peace, a dragon group who worked on stopping the war and keeping the five dragonets hidden, lost the Skywing egg and got a replacement from the Rainwings, a tribe that’s known for being very lazy. Later, more issues come for the Talons of Peace, as the five dragonets escaped. Tsunami, a bossy and fearless Seawing, Starflight, a smart and nervous Nightwing, Glory, a Rainwing full of sarcasm, Clay, the good-hearted Mudwing, and Sunny, cheerful and full of happiness. Sunny is also an unusual Sandwing with her strange golden color, green eyes, and no poisonous tail barb. The five were captured by Skywings soon after they make their getaway; from one prison straight to another. As they all try to survive Queen Scarlet’s deadly arena, a new dragon appears, trying to find her true meaning in life,  Glory finds a strength she never knew she had, and Clay goes to the Mud Kingdom, searching for his parents, only to find something unexpected instead. Will the dragonets survive? Or will they die before their prophecy can be fulfilled?

Like I’ve said before, I’m beyond flummoxed about why I’m never mentioned anything about these books in my book reviews before. they are lovely and past exciting. Tui T. Sutherland is seriously the BEST writer ever(among others:). Are you someone who likes fantasy, magic, dragons, and adventures? This series is for you, and you must get the first immediately. That’s a fact. If you like them, there are fourteen more in the series, as well as five graphic novels. Number six in the graphic novels is coming this December, so I’m certainly looking forward to that. The art is so awesome to look at. Mike Holmes, the artist, does a fabulous job. Anyway, I’m sure I could spend all day raving about how amazing this series is, but you probably have things to do or places to go, so I’ll let you be. See you next time, everyone!

Wings Of Fire: The Dragonet Prophecy

The dragonets are trying to escape from the sky wings prison. Clay meets Sky wing who saved his life from an ice wing in the arena. What will happen to the group of dragonets? Will Clay help them or not?

My opinion about Wings of Fire is it was awesome because it has dragons. I finished it in one day! My favorite part when Clay tried to sneak through the Queen’s cave…5 seconds later, the Queen saw Clay getting one of the dragons busted. The reason why I liked it was because Clay was a risk-taker and I am a risk-taker, too! This is a book in a series. The books are similar because each dragon finds its family.

I recommend the book for 3rd to 5th graders because it has 214 pages. If you like relaxing in your hammock or bed, this is a book for you. This might interest you because of where they live! You will have to read it to find out!

  10. Kid reviews for The Dragonet Prophecy: Wings of Fire, Book 1

The characters are well-developed, the action is compelling, and the worldbuilding is detailed. However, the marketing is deceptive-- Wings Of Fire should be for teens, not children.
