Speech Marks

There are a number of resources which can be used to teach children about speech marks (also known as inverted commas or quotation marks):

1)  Witch and Tiger Conversation . This worksheet (in PDF format below) shows ten pictures of a witch and a tiger having a conversation. The speech bubbles are blank, and the procedure for using this worksheet goes as follows:

  • First, the children can choose names for the witch and the tiger.
  • Then, they have to create the contents of the conversation. The topic of the conversation could be decided by the children, or it could be based on a choice by the teacher. You could even complete the conversation before the lesson, in order to save more time for the next (and most important) section.
  • Now the children have to re-write this conversation in the form of a story. They will need to include phrases such as “said Tom” and “asked Joe”. Speech marks will also need to be used, so it is important that children have a good knowledge of the correct use of speech marks before this activity is tried.

2)  Missing Speech Marks . This activity is also based on a worksheet, which can be also be found below. It contains a number of sentences involving speech. However, the speech marks have been removed from the text and should be replaced by the children.

3)  Missing Speech Marks . This activity is very similar to the one above, with children required to put speech marks in the correct place in each of the sentences. The worksheet (in PDF format) is also below.

Punctuating Dialogue - Worksheet Pack teaching resource

Teaching Dialogue Punctuation Can Be Tough!

Punctuating dialogue correctly is quite complicated. Students typically require lots of repetition to master this skill. In this worksheet, students practice correctly adding commas, quotation marks, capital letters, periods, and other forms of punctuation to the sentences provided. Sometimes, the quoted speech occurs at the beginning of the sentence, and other times, it is found in the middle or at the end.

This worksheet will help your students confidently write dialogue in their narratives or other text types.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Grab Your Differentiated Quotation Marks Worksheets

The worksheet comes in three differentiated versions. The reading levels and amount of writing required vary. The easiest level is labeled with a circle, and the levels progress to the triangle and square versions.

We have a Google Slides version for you if you wish to modify the resource further or write your own sentences!

Download and Print Your Direct Speech Worksheets

The Download button has a dropdown icon, which allows you to choose between the PDF and Google Slides versions of this resource.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

Alternatively, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.

---- OR ---- Preview Activity

Worksheet Overview

In writing, we use speech marks (also called inverted commas ) to show the actual words that somebody speaks. This is called direct speech .

It is important to remember to use other punctuation as well as the speech marks.

For example :

"I live in Brighton," said Tom.

In this sentence, there is a comma after the word ' Brighton ' but before the closing speech marks.

Brighton beach

If the order of the sentence is changed so that the direct speech is at the end, then the punctuation is different.

Tom said, "I live in Brighton."

There is a comma after the word ' said ' and a full stop after the word ' Brighton ' but before the closing speech marks.

If the speech ends in an exclamation mark or a question mark , then that comes before the closing speech marks and a comma is not needed.

"Go away!" shouted Pete.

"Are you listening?" asked Jonny.

The words ' shouted ' and ' asked ' do not need capital letters even though they come after an exclamation mark and a question mark.

If the word order is changed, the sentences look like this:

Pete shouted, "Go away!"

Jonny asked, "Are you listening?"

two boys fightin

The first word of the direct speech always begins with a capital letter even if it is not the start of the sentence.

It is common in books for a single speech mark to be used instead of two. This is done on your keyboard by using the apostrophe key.

Pete shouted, 'Go away!'
