I want to be a doctor because I want to help those who cannot afford the cost of treatment of many difficult diseases. I have a goal of opening a hospital of my own that will be equipped with all the modern medical instruments. My ambition

Ever since I was very young and saw perhaps a child cut and bleeding or an old woman suffering from an incurable disease, I have always hated pain and the human suffering that it causes. It has, therefore, always been my ambition to become a doctor and to be able to cure diseases and to ease pain. Many count riches, power and glory among their ambitions, but for me, to serve humanity through medicine is the highest ambition of all.

The training is long and expensive and I shall need to work very hard. After passing the right examinations in school. I shall then need to take a University examination, which will enable me to enter the medical school, which is part of our University life in Singapore.

At University, there will be many lectures to attend. Physiology and Anatomy are two of the most important subjects during the first year. The different organs of the body such as the heart, the kidneys and the liver, together with their functions and disorders have to be studied. As well as this, there will be lectures on the many different diseases to which man is subject, with the various ways of diagnosing them and dealing with them. Lectures are given by highly qualified specialists.

As well as this theoretical work, there will be a practical course during the five years training. A new medical student has to begin by ‘walking the wards’ in a hospital. He accompanies doctors in charge of patients and watches what they do. He has to study patients being examined and listen tot he conclusions reached. He has intricate operations being performed by skilled surgeons. He had to make his own reports from his own diagnoses, at the same time, as the qualified doctor. All of these are checked and corrected, so that the student can learn from his mistakes. When he has passed this practical course, which lasts for about four years, he is then called a ‘House man’.

Written examinations are taken at different stages. At the end of the first year, there is the first M.B. This is the first part of a Bachelor of Medicine degree and is a very difficult hurdle. Many students fail it. Then, there is the second M.B. and at the end ‘finals’ which include both a written, and oral and a practical examination. When ‘finals’ are safely behind me, I will really by a qualified doctor and be able to add this style to my name.

It will then be my ambition to obtain a grant from the authorities to travel abroad for further studies and I would like to go to Australia to do this. At a post-graduate course there, I would be able to study different methods, to see new techniques and to obtain even higher qualifications like a Doctor of Medicine degree.

Finally, I would return to Malaysia where I want to work as an assistant medical officer in one of our busiest cities. There, I would gain more practical experience than I ever could in a small village. All types of illness would, among a large population, most certainly come my way. The ailments of children, of young mothers and of the very old could all be studied. I would learn to recognize an appendicitis of tonsillitis very quickly. In a very large city, it is not always possible to have the services of a gynaecologist and so I would have practice in delivering babies myself.

During this time, I would try to save money. Doctors are rightly well-paid and I would live moderately. After some years, therefore, I hope to be not only experienced as a general practitioner, but also comfortably rich as well.

Finally, then I would realize my ultimate ambition, which is to do the medical practice in my own village and to return here. I have never had any desire to specialize and to become a pathologist, a surgeon, a gynecologist or an ear, nose and throat specialist. To be a good general practitioner here, in my own home is the end of my dream and, although not a specialist in any particular sphere, I shall know enough to deal with the common ailments of life and to call in the right specialists a once if they are needed. I shall then be able to serve the village I love so well.

I am fascinated with the working of machinery. So I want to become a mechanical engineer and invent machines to make life simpler.

My life ambition is to become a police officer. The profession of police is brave and interesting. Police officers maintain law and order in our society. They save us from thieves and other criminals. Our society has different types of people, some good and some bad. The bad try to harm the good people physically or by cheating them. Police ensure the bad people are caught and put in prison. They ensure peace and safety in society. When I grow up and become a police officer, I want to catch criminals and make society a safe place for everyone.

Every kid dreams of becoming someone important and successful when they grow up. I too want to be someone important when I grow up. I also want to serve my country and make India the best country to live in. Therefore, I want to become an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. An IAS officer makes sure the country is functioning properly. They are the people who ensure the government projects, plans and schemes are executed properly. They also ensure the government funds are utilised honestly for the welfare of their fellow citizens. So as an IAS officer, I will make my county proud of my work.

Most kids want to become doctors or engineers when they grow up. But, I dream of becoming a lawyer when I grow up. A lawyer is a professional who helps people fight their judicial battles and win them. In our society, there are many kinds of people. Some people take advantage of others and wrongly cheat them of their property, money or rights. To punish such bad people, the people who are harmed file suits in court against them. Lawyers fight their court cases and ensure they get justice. As a lawyer, I will help the police send criminals to jail, and ensure that good people get justice.

Ever since I was a baby, I have been fascinated with nurses. Every time I visited the hospital with my parents for check-ups, the lovely nurses there pampered me a lot. Their smiling faces and caring attitude always impressed me. They are very helpful and caring. More than doctors, the nurses take care of the patients, and they are the ones who give medicines and injections and look after patients day and night. Therefore, it’s my dream to become a nurse when I grow up. As a nurse, I want to treat and care for people in their sicknesses and see them getting better.

One must be healthy physically and mentally. We undergo many health problems time and again. We need to cure these health problems at the earliest to restore back to health; and only a doctor can help us to restore back to health. Doctor, who cures ailing and distress with utmost devotion, care and love, is a saviour and God to millions. We need doctor’s help in health problems like cold, cough, fever, flue, depression, etc. or any natural deformities like bad positioning of teeth, deafness, dumbness, blindness, ill-shaped limb, etc. or in case of accidents.

A doctor is a healer who extends his true services to all his patients regardless of any bias, selfishness or apprehension about himself catching up the infections. To a doctor, his patients are very important and treating and curing them is always his priority. There are various branches of medicine like Allopathy, Homeopathy, Unani, Ayurvedic. I am prone to allergies, so I need help of a doctor very often. Though I am afraid of injections and bitter medicines but I never delay my visit to doctor because I know only my doctor can help me restore back to good health at the earliest.

Dr. Edward Smith, a general physician, is our family doctor. He is associated with my family since last 20 years even when I was not born. He is a man in his late 50’s and looks smart in his white lab coat and always wears a stethoscope and pleasing smile. I call him ‘Uncle doc’ and take his advice for any major dietary change. Dr. Smith is a very dedicated man, he attends to his patients at his clinic, at his residence and in the evening renders his services for free to a charitable hospital. He never declines to attend to emergency needs of any patients even during his rest hours or odd hours. He is co-operative enough to personally visit our house in case of some grave emergency. He is a very jovial person who often jokes around with his patients to keep them cheerful even when they are in grave pain or distress.

Dr. Smith always wants his patient to be hale and hearty and so he often tells them in detail about the precautions, causes and cures of various diseases and prescribes them the best medicine available.

Doctor is an important part of the society because as long as we are alive we will have minor or major health problems and we need a doctor to cure them and let health and happiness prevail. A doctor is a saviour for society.
