How To Use TikTok’s Text-to-Speech Feature

To use text-to-speech on your next TikTok video, shoot the TikTok as you normally would on the app by hitting the plus sign in the middle of your bottom tab on the app. Choose between 15 seconds, 30 seconds, or 3 minutes as your time limit on the video, then shoot the video as you normally would. Once you’re done, click the red check mark in the bottom right of your screen to edit your footage.

Next, add whatever text you’re planning to use on your TikTok. To do this, click the “Aa” icon on the bottom of your screen, and type whatever message you wish. You can also format the appearance of your text, where it will appear on the screen, and at what point of the video it will appear with “Set duration.” (While you can add closed captions manually or automatically on TikTok, it’s not ideal to add text-to-speech to any captions that you’re already saying out loud in the video - as the text-to-speech voice will just talk over yours.)

Once you have your text written out, you can add text-to-speech in one of two ways. While you’re still editing your text, you can select text-to-speech with the third icon from the left that looks like a talking head. If you’ve already added your text to the video, you can choose to add text-to-speech by clicking on the text and selecting the talking head icon.

From here, you’ll be prompted to choose from TikTok’s preset selection of voices. Jessie is the default voice with an American accent, and Joey and Alex also speak in American accents. Eddie and Chris speak in Australian accents, and Scream speaks like Ghostface from Scream . Choose your favorite voice, and, voila. Your text will be immediately read by the TikTok text-to-speech bot. (Though, there’s no guarantee that the bot will know how to pronounce all of your text — as TikTokers have found with some hilarious faux pas .)

TikTok’s Text-to-Speech is both a great accessibility feature for people with visual and reading impairments and a tool to create enjoyable content. While Text-to-Speech is available on devices like tablets or phones via the operating system, it’s relatively forward-thinking for a social app like TikTok to make it available within the app. Other platforms like Twitter and Facebook don’t make use of this feature. Instagram does auto-caption stories but only if someone is already speaking in the video.

The feature doesn’t come without controversy, however. TikTok changed the original voice after the actor filed a lawsuit claiming she had never agreed to be featured in the app. The new voice is less of a monotone than the original and seems to be just as popular. Creators use it to narrate their videos, as an accessibility tool, and to have a little fun by seeing what words the bot can (or cannot) pronounce.

You can use the text-to-speech voice on TikTok by giving your video text, tapping on the text, and selecting "Text-to-speech."
The text still has to appear in the TikTok at some point, but you can shrink and move it so it's out of the way.
You can't exactly control how TikTok's text-to-speech voice sounds, but you can use punctuation to change it.

If you want to use text-to-speech on TikTok, all you have to do is record a video. There are no extra downloads required.

How to do text-to-speech on TikTok

1. Open TikTok and record a video. It can be any length, and include anything you like.

2. When you're done recording, head to the editing screen and tap Text at the bottom.

3. Type out your text in any color or style, and then tap Done in the top-right.

4. Tap the text you've written out, and then select Text-to-speech .

By default, your text will appear throughout the entire video, and the text-to-speech voice will appear right at the start. If you'd like to change this, tap the text again and select Set duration to choose when you'd like the text - and text-to-speech voice - to appear in your video.

Quick tip: If you want viewers to hear the text-to-speech voice, but not see the text itself, you should set the text's duration as short as possible (one second), and then shrink and move the text somewhere that viewers won't notice.

If you want to give the feature a try, here’s how to use text to speech on TikTok using your mobile phone or tablet.

Adding text to speech to your video is easy to do in the TikTok app on Android, iPhone, and iPad.

Capture your video as you usually would.
Before tapping Next at the bottom, tap Text . This is at the bottom on mobile phones and the top right on tablets.
Type your text into the text box.
Immediately tap the Text to Speech icon to the left of the font styles and select Done at the top. If you’ve already tapped Done to move on, tap the text box and choose Text to Speech in the pop-up menu.

To change the voice, tap the text box and choose Change Voice in the pop-up menu.
Select the text to speech voice you want to use at the bottom of the screen and tap Done .

Tap Next to move on to the next step and post your video or save it as a draft.

You can add text to speech to a video draft you’ve saved the same way.

Set a Duration to Show the Text Box

The text to speech for your video is spoken at the start of your clip. However, the text box remains. Optionally, you can set the duration for the amount of time the text box displays.

Tap the text box and pick Set Duration in the pop-up menu.
Use the slider at the bottom to adjust how long the text displays. Most likely, you’ll drag from right to left to shorten the time after the narration plays.
Optionally, tap the play button to see a preview and adjust the duration if needed.
Tap the checkmark to apply the change.

Edit the Text

To edit the text you’ve entered, tap the text box and select Edit in the pop-up menu. Make your changes or enter new text and select Done . The spoken text updates automatically.

If you apply the text to speech to your video as described above and change your mind, you can remove it before posting your video.

Do one of the following to turn off text to speech:

Select the text box, choose Edit , and tap the Text to Speech icon to remove the checkmark from it.
Tap the text box and select Change Voice . Then pick None for the voice.

How to use Text-to-Speech on TikTok

Now, I'm sure you've seen the Text-to-Speech feature all over TikTok. It's the one that sounds a little like this: "Wow, I really love TikTok's Text to Speech feature." Here's how you can create the same effect on your videos.

Step One: Create a new video

Step one: Open up TikTok and hit the "Plus" icon at the bottom of your screen to create a new video. I'm just going to record a new video right now, so please ignore the silence. Okay, that's perfect.

Step Two: Add text to the video

Step two: Add some text to your video. This is what will become your automated voiceover, so type whatever you want to be said out loud. I'm going to write, "Thanks for checking out our YouTube channel". To turn the text into speech, long press it and then select "Text-to-Speech" when it pops up onscreen.

Once it's done processing, the voice will read the text out loud just like this: "Thanks for checking out our YouTube channel."

Step Three: Edit and post your video

If you need to edit your text, you'll need to reapply the Text-to-Speech function. When you're finished, just tap Next, fill out the description and other details for your video, and then post your video. And there you have it. It's that simple to add the Text-to-Speech feature to your videos on TikTok.

Also, keep your text short to avoid having the voiceover cut before the video has ended. To adjust the duration of the text, touch the text box and choose “Set duration” from the menu.

There are a variety of these videos on the app, but the general idea is that you give Siri (or another automated voice) text to read and make the text your audio. Sometimes the audio is telling the storytime tale a user wishes to share, or some users like to see how automated voices read specific words.

These text-to-speech programs also read emojis, and for some it's interesting to hear how a computer interprets many of our most-used emojis.

To do this effect for your own TikTok, there are a few ways you can create the audio. There are a variety of apps on the market that will easily create text-to-speech audio for you, though some do charge a small fee.

TikTok implemented a text-to-speech feature in the app to increase accessibility. All you have to do is type your desired text in a text box while editing your video and then select "text-to-speech." This automatically generates an audio from the text you type on the screen.

How to change the text-to-speech voice.

After the text-to-speech feature was implemented, ByteDance (the company behind TikTok) faced a lawsuit alleging that the voice actor behind the original audio, Beverly Standing, did not consent to the app using her voice. She sued the company, and shortly after the text-to-speech feature was given a different voice.

Unfortunately, many users aren't a fan of the new voice and are looking for ways to swap it out with a different voice.

There isn't a way in the video editing portion of TikTok to edit the audio for text-to-speech, but there are some workarounds if you're really looking to change the voice you use.

First, film your video in TikTok and edit it, using the regular text-to-speech voice. Download the edited video and upload it to another voice-modifying app to alter the voice of the text-to-speech. There are a variety of apps and online services you can pick. Re-upload your video and you're done!

Here's how to add captions to a video.

One of the most important parts of this trend is to include captions on your video for the text you're using in your audio. This is important because when the text-to-speech audio reads something incorrectly, your viewers will need to know what the word actually is.

Again, there are a variety of apps you can use to do this, but there is a free way to add captions to your video right in the app's built-in video editor.

To add text, all you have to do is click the "text" button in the edit portion of posting your video and transcribe the audio. The video will continue playing in the background while you do this, so you might finish transcribing the audio at a different portion of the video than where it belongs.

Once you're done with your transcription, tap on the text and select "set duration." From here, you can choose for how long and where in the video the text appears.

Are you just joining TikTok and about to make your first captioned video? Perhaps you've even used the app for a while but want to start supporting your TikTok videos with written words.

It only takes a few moments. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to add text to your TikTok videos.

How to Add Text to TikTok Videos

It's easy to add text and text boxes to your TikTok videos. You do this in the same editing menu for adding effects, sounds, and stickers.

Launch the TikTok app on your mobile device. Next, capture or select the video you want to use. Then follow these steps to add text directly to your TikTok video:

Once TikTok takes you to the video editing menu, tap the Text icon (Aa) at the top right.
Type the words you want to place on your video.
Change text color and font (optional). Select your preferred color from the round color dots at the top of your keyboard. You can also change your text font by tapping the font names right above the color options. For example, you can select the Handwriting option for italicized text.
Align the text (optional). Tap the text alignment bars immediately to the left of the font options to align your text to the left, right, or center.
Change the caption style (optional). To the left of the alignment bar, touch the highlighted icon denoted with an A to add different highlights to your text. For example, you can use this option to bold your text or make it appear in a box. Keep tapping this symbol to see the available options.
Tap Done at the top right once you've finished typing and altering the style of the text.
You can then manually adjust the position of the text by dragging it across your screen.
Tap Next to go to the uploading menu, where you can now upload or draft your captioned video.

Since TikTok lets users stitch videos together , you can add text to each stitched video if you like. All you need to do is repeat the steps highlighted above.

You can also add multiple bits of text or put multiple words on your TikTok video by repeating these steps and treating each piece of text as a separate element or sticker. Once you're satisfied with this phase, you can go ahead and describe your video, add tags, post your TikTok video or save it to your drafts.

That's it. You just added words to your TikTok video. As you can see, it's as easy as making a TikTok video .

How to Edit Text on TikTok

You can edit the added text before moving to the publishing menu if it needs more patching.

All you need to do is:

Tap the written text
Select Edit from the popup options.
Then redo your caption by repeating the steps for adding text to your video.
Tap Done when you finish making your edits.

However, if the video is already in the drafts, you'll only need to go to your profile and select it to edit the words you've written earlier. Then follow the same instruction as above.

You can't edit the added text once you publish your video.

Set the Duration for TikTok Video Text and Make the Text Disappear

To get a bit creative, you can set a duration for how long you want the text to appear in your video, making it vanish as people play your TikTok video. You can even specify the point in your video where you want the caption to start appearing.

To set the duration of how long you want words to appear on a TikTok video, use the following steps:

Tap the relevant text.
Select Set duration from the options that come up.
Next, drag the time slider at the bottom of the screen to the left or right to set a time frame for your text as you like.
Tap the play button above the time slider to preview how the text will appear in the video.
Once you're satisfied, tap the checkmark symbol in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Convert Text to Speech on Your TikTok Video

You can also use TikTok's text-to-speech feature to convert the words you've written on your TikTok video to speech. This is handy for creating awareness about what your TikTok video is all about.

To achieve this, all you need to do is touch the written text and select Text-to-speech . This converts all the words you've written on your TikTok video to audio without removing the original text. Once done, you'll hear an audible voice repeating the words you typed in your video.

Make Your TikTok Videos More Interesting

Why Every Leader Should Write a "How to Work With Me" Manual Do your team members really know how you work? Here's why creating a manual to your working style and preferences is so essential as a leader.

Do your team members really know how you work? Recently, I created a "Working with Our Leaders" resource for Lemonlight team members that outlines how I prefer to work, collaborate and lead. Inspired by Claire Hughes Johnson , the former COO of Stripe, each member of our leadership team now has their own version of this manual.

As I wrote my profile (which you can see here !), I realized how much we assume our colleagues understand our working styles without ever explicitly sharing them. Here's why I believe every leader should create a manual to set the tone for effective team collaboration — and what yours should include.

Why it matters

Creating a "How to Work With Me" manual is a valuable exercise for any leader. It provides a clear framework for your team to understand how you work best, fostering better communication and collaboration. Here are some of the specific benefits.

Gain clarity on your own preferences and tendencies

Writing your manual isn't just a tool for your team — it's a valuable reflection exercise for you as a leader. You might think you know exactly how you operate, what drives you and what you expect from others, but until you sit down and explain these thoughts, there may be things you haven't fully explored. This process forces you to think critically about your leadership style , helping you find areas where you may be unclear or inconsistent.

For example, you might discover that you prefer direct communication but have never clearly explained that to your team, leading to misunderstandings. Or you might realize that you value quick decision-making but haven't been prioritizing that day-to-day. By taking the time to write down your preferences, you can set the stage for better collaboration and build your self-awareness .

The more you understand your own tendencies, the better you can manage your reactions, make informed decisions and create a work environment that aligns with your values.

Set clear expectations for team collaboration

Next, your team can't meet your needs if you've never communicated what those needs are. A "How to Work With Me" manual bridges this gap by providing a clear, concise guide that outlines your expectations , preferences and working style.

For example, in my manual, I explain that if we've discussed something in person and I owe you action items, sending me a follow-up email ensures I don't miss anything. This might seem like a small detail, but without sharing this, team members might have to guess at best practices. These assumptions can lead to inefficiencies, miscommunications and frustration.

By clearly outlining your preferences, you remove the guesswork for your team. They'll know exactly how to approach tasks, how to communicate with you and how to align their work with your expectations. Everyone knows what's expected of them, which reduces the chances of misunderstandings and makes it easier to get things done.

Plus, setting clear expectations helps build trust . When your team knows that you've taken the time to communicate your needs, they'll feel more confident in their interactions with you. This trust is the foundation of a high-performing team where everyone feels valued and understood.

Open the dialogue for others to share

Finally, as leaders, we set the tone for how our teams operate and how people communicate with each other. By creating and sharing your "How to Work With Me" manual, you're not just clarifying your own preferences — you're also encouraging others to do the same. This can lead to a more open, transparent work environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their own working styles.

Imagine if every team member had their own "ways to work with me" guide. It would normalize discussions about individual needs, preferences and working styles , fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding. When people are open about how they work best, teams can collaborate more effectively and lean on each other's strengths.

For example, some team members might prefer detailed written instructions, while others might prefer verbal communication. Understanding these preferences can help in assigning tasks, organizing meetings and structuring workflows. Encouraging your team to create their own manuals also promotes self-awareness, requiring them to reflect on their own working styles and communicate them effectively.

What to include

When creating your "How to Work With Me" manual, think about the key aspects of your working style that could impact your team. For example, my profile includes practical details like how and when I respond to emails, a few professional areas I'm focusing on improving and even my habit of tweaking the design of Excel spreadsheets I receive (it's me, not you!).

You might consider including sections about your communication style, typical work hours, expectations from direct reports, leadership style, how you structure your day, how you like to run meetings and anything else that could facilitate smoother collaboration .

Don't be afraid to add a personal touch, too. My manual includes tidbits about my hobbies, my dog Oliver, my favorite author (Augusten Burroughs) and even my results from common personality tests. Adding a "human" element to your leadership can help your team connect with you on a more personal level.

If you assume your teammates — and especially your direct reports — already know this information about you, I encourage you to write it out. You might be surprised by what you learn about yourself and how much clarity it brings to your team!

The influencer’s social media career took off when she became a Hollister brand ambassador, but it was a video of her dancing with dad Dan Thurmon that brought her TikTok fame

Singer Benson Boone and his girlfriend Maggie Thurmon made a stunning red carpet debut when they shared a passionate kiss for the cameras at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in New York on Thursday.

The young couple arrived at the event in coordinated black ensembles. Boone was dressed in a sheer button up with floral designs, a pair of black pants and sparkling silver shoes, while Thurmon stunned in an off-shoulder black dress.

Boone, 22, a Washington native, became an overnight sensation after his song “Beautiful Things” topped the charts in several countries earlier this year, including Billboard’s. He also snagged the award for Best Alternative Video for the song at the VMAs.

But what do we know about the woman who may or may not have inspired his smash hit single? Here’s everything you need to know about Maggie Thurmon.

Maggie Thurmon is a TikTok influencer

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Thurmon, 22, started her social media career when she was still in high school, as a brand ambassador for Hollister.

As she began taking social media more seriously, her goal was to post one video a week of her senior year, but it was actually a video of her dancing with her father, Dan Thurmon, that went viral and catapulted her to TikTok fame.

Currently, Thurmon has amassed over five million followers on TikTok and 265,000 followers on Instagram at the time of writing.

How a fringe online claim about immigrants eating pets made its way to the debate stage

Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, tens of millions of television viewers watched as Donald Trump spread an unsubstantiated and racially charged rumor running wild online.

“In Springfield they’re eating dogs,” the former president said, referring to an Ohio city dealing with an influx of Haitian immigrants. “They’re eating the cats. They’re eating … the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country, and it’s a shame.”

The extraordinary moment — the airing of a claim worthy of a chain email while participating in a prime-time presidential debate — probably puzzled most of the 67.1 million people tuned in for Trump’s clash with Vice President Kamala Harris. But the rumor, which has been criticized as perpetuating racist tropes, was already thriving in right-wing corners of the internet and being amplified by those close to Trump, including his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio.

No one involved in Trump’s debate preparations or in a position to speak for his campaign agreed to discuss the strategy on the record or answer questions about how it mutated from a fringe obsession to a debate stage sound bite.

“Just, suffice to say, he was aware of it. He decided to bring it up,” Tim Murtaugh, a senior Trump adviser, told NBC News. “Now it’s a major story. We would otherwise probably not be talking about immigration if not for that.”

Others close to Trump expressed misgivings about the execution.

“Immigration should be talked about, because Harris as border czar has failed,” said a Trump adviser, who, like others, was granted anonymity to speak candidly. “Did that issue come out in the best way? Probably not. But it’s not something to be shied away from.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally from South Carolina, questioned the former president’s focus.

“I don’t know about dogs and cats,” Graham said in an interview Thursday. “But there are numerous young women who have been raped and murdered by people who were in our custody here illegally, and we let them go. That’s what I’d be talking about. That should be the face of a broken immigration system, not cats and dogs.”

While the fallout has been a combination of bafflement and outrage, the makings of the moment are rooted in grievances that have long defined and animated Trump and his followers — and on the platforms where those grievances blossom.

Trump, who launched his first presidential campaign with a speech that broadly characterized Mexican immigrants as dangerous criminals, has kept immigration and border security issues central to his third White House bid.

Meanwhile, the right-wing social media ecosystem that rose up around his 2016 run has calcified as an additive and disruptive force: Trump now has his own social media network , Truth Social, and ally Elon Musk controls X, formerly Twitter. Vance in particular has reveled in fighting the culture wars and other right-wing causes online and often assumes a trolling posture on X while acting as a filter of information between the fringe and the mainstream.

Vance and others close to Trump have argued that, even if the claims are false, they have served a purpose by pushing the Springfield story into the spotlight.

“The media didn’t care about the carnage wrought by these policies until we turned it into a meme about cats, and that speaks to the media’s failure to care about what’s going on in these communities,” Vance told CNN after Tuesday’s debate. “If we have to meme about it to get the media to care, we’re going to keep on doing it, because the media could, should, care about what’s going on.”

The issue in Springfield, about 45 miles from Columbus in southwest Ohio, involves thousands of Haitian immigrants who have settled in the city in recent years, many of them there legally under federal programs after having fled violence and political turmoil. Residents and political leaders, including Vance, have for months raised economic and public safety concerns, asserting that an influx of as many as 20,000 immigrants to a city that in 2020 counted a population of 59,000 has strained resources.

Claims about pets being abducted, slaughtered and eaten are more recent.

Blood Tribe, a national neo-Nazi group, was among the early purveyors of the rumor in August, posting about it on Gab and Telegram, social networks popular with extremists. While the group’s leader has taken credit for Trump’s indulgence of the claims, Blood Tribe’s reach is unknown; its accounts on those sites have fewer than 1,000 followers.

Some Blood Tribe members also planned a couple of events in the real world, like a small Aug. 10 march in Springfield protesting Haitian immigration and an appearance at a city commission meeting later that month.

The rumor soon crossed over to mainstream social media, like Facebook and X. NewsGuard, a firm that monitors misinformation, traced the origins to an undated post from a private Facebook group that was shared in a screenshot posted to X on Sept. 5.

“Remember when my hometown of Springfield Ohio was all over National news for the Haitians?” the user wrote. “I said all the ducks were disappearing from our parks? Well, now it’s your pets.”

Around that time, other social media posts about the rumor sprouted and went viral, some of them based in part on residents’ comments at public hearings . On Sept. 6, there were 1,100 posts on X mentioning Haitians, migrants or immigrants eating pets, cats, dogs and geese, according to PeakMetrics, a research company. The next day there were 9,100 — a 720% increase.

The number of posts spiked again Monday, to 47,000, when Vance advanced the rumor on X .

“Months ago, I raised the issue of Haitian illegal immigrants draining social services and generally causing chaos all over Springfield, Ohio,” Vance wrote, referring to remarks he had made at a Senate hearing. “Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country.”

Vance, as he noted in his post, had been raising the issue for months, but in less provocative terms.

“Now go to Springfield, go to Clark County, Ohio, and ask the people there whether they have been enriched by 20,000 newcomers in four years,” he said in early July, before Trump selected him as his running mate, at NatCon, a right-wing nationalist conference. “Housing is through the roof. People, middle-class people in Springfield who have lived there sometimes for generations cannot afford a place to live.”

Soon after Vance’s post Monday, Springfield police officials told the Springfield News-Sun — and, later, NBC News and other national media — that they had received no credible reports of such incidents. Vance issued a follow-up post the next day, writing that his office had received reports of “pets or local wildlife” being “abducted by Haitian migrants.”

“It’s possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false,” he added.

But by that point, Trump was fully on board with them. At 5:19 p.m. Tuesday, less than four hours before his debate with Harris, Trump posted to Truth Social a meme showing cats armed for war and wearing MAGA hats. Fifteen minutes later, he shared a second meme depicting him surrounded by cats and ducks.

Then came the debate. When moderator David Muir of ABC News asked about his opposition to a bipartisan border bill, a distracted Trump first insisted on responding to a jab Harris had landed about people leaving his campaign rallies early. His meandering answer eventually turned to Springfield, where, he said, “they’re eating dogs … and cats.”

Discomfort and disapproval from Trump’s fellow Republicans were soon palpable.

“I want to be clear on this. That is a very minor, minor issue happening in the United States,” Rep. Byron Donalds, a Trump loyalist from Florida, told NBC News when asked about the pets remark in the post-debate spin room.

Those looking for someone to blame offered several suspects. Laura Loomer, a right-wing political activist and conspiracy theorist who had been posting about the rumor, traveled with Trump to the debate Tuesday.

“Why do you want to speak to me? I don’t work for President Trump,” Loomer responded when reached by NBC News.

Loomer and Trump did not speak on the plane ride, a source familiar with the trip said. And a Trump aide noted that Loomer “is not a member of our staff.”

“The president is the most well-read man in America, and he has a pulse on everything that is going on,” the aide added.

The Springfield rumor “made it to his desk. He was made aware of what these residents were saying.”

Others focused their suspicions on Vance, given how he had forced the issue into the spotlight.

“It’s all JD,” a source linked to the campaign said.

Another source close to Trump’s campaign said Trump and Vance did not discuss the Springfield issue ahead of the debate.

“I don’t know what he was thinking,” a different Trump ally said of his choice to bring up the Springfield rumor unprompted.

The blame, this person said, solely rests with Trump.

“You don’t prep Donald Trump,” the ally added. “You can make suggestions.”
