Ferguson takes top spot in virtual 3-Minute Thesis competition

Ferguson takes top spot in virtual 3-Minute Thesis competition

Brennan Ferguson, a Ph.D. candidate in the environmental engineering and earth sciences program, took top honors in the Doctoral Candidate category of the 2020-2021 Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Ferguson will represent Clemson at the Southern Council of Graduate Schools’ 3MT competition at the group’s virtual conference on February 24-26, 2021.

Brennan Ferguson portrait

Twenty-eight graduate students representing every college summarized and explained the relevance of their research in three minutes or less and were judged on clarity, presentation, and more. The Ph.D. candidate runner-up was Moazzam Nazir of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In the Ph.D. student/master’s student category* Amber Stone, M.S. student in animal and veterinary science, took first place, and Emma Chiappetta, M.Ed. student from the teaching and learning program was named runner-up.

Sponsored at Clemson by Graduate Student Government (GSG), the Graduate School, the Vice President for Research, and the colleges, the competition encourages students to develop and hone communication skills they need as professionals but often don’t focus on as part of their usual studies. Founded at the University of Queensland, 3MT has become a national hallmark of graduate schools across the United States.

The ’20-’21 competition was broadcast live online via Twitch, which allowed for easy access to Clemson students, faculty, staff and community members and resulted in a record-setting crowd that watched the event.

*A Ph.D. (or doctoral) candidate is a graduate student who has completed all the requirements of a doctoral program except writing and defending a dissertation. Ph.D. students are still in the coursework phase of their programs, and in 3MT no distinction between candidate and student is made for master’s degree students.

CURF Engages Graduate Students and Sponsors 3-Minute Thesis Competition

By chase kasper.

clemson three minute thesis

Dear Colleagues,

This semester I have greatly enjoyed engaging with the Clemson University graduate student community about technology commercialization and intellectual property. I’d like to extend my thanks to Jodi Cox for inviting me to speak at two GRAD360 workshops this semester to educate graduate students about intellectual property and its connection to industry. I have also had the opportunity to speak to the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS) faculty and graduate students about CURF resources specific to their college. I am looking forward to facilitating more conversations about collaborative opportunities between academia and industry and continuing to provide research support to our graduate student inventors.

CURF is proud to have been a sponsor of this year’s final round of the 3-Minute Thesis (“3MT”) competition. 3MT is a research competition that challenges graduate students to present a compelling summary of their thesis and its significance to a non-specialist audience in three minutes. This competition takes place in over 900 universities across 85 countries. Every year, Clemson University’s winner is sent to compete at the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools Regional competition. At this conference, students are judged on their ability to communicate their research content in a comprehensive way and on how well they engage the audience during their presentation. The University’s final rounds were judged by Dr. Lisa Benson, Professor in the Department of Engineering and Science Education, Dr. Kaileigh Byrne, Associate Professor of Cognitive Psychology, Dr. Patricia Randall, the Director of Princeton Consultants, and Harold Hughes, Founder and CEO of Bandwagon.

This year’s winner was Rosemarie Somers from the Agricultural Sciences program in the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences who presented her research on agriscience teachers’ self-reported confidence levels in using a microscope. Mandeep Tayal from the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences came in 2nd place. Charini Maladeniya from the Department of Chemistry was named the PhD Candidate Champion and Yasir Mahmood from the Department of Mechanical Engineering came in 2nd place for the PhD category in the competition.

CURF is also pleased to have sponsored this year’s CURF-3MT People’s Choice Awards. This award is given to the participant whose presentation was voted on the most by attendees. I was pleased to have presented the award to Kenzie Hurley from the Psychology program in the College of Behavioral, Social, and Health Sciences who presented her research on using cognitive task analysis to evaluate the Navy’s parachute descent training. On behalf of CURF, I’d like to extend our congratulations to all the winners and student participants. Additionally, I would like to thank George Strickland, Vishal Thomas, Jodi Cox, Associate Dean Marieke Van Puymbroeck, Dean John Lopes, Clarissa Williams, Eden Wallace, and the Graduate Student Government Research Initiatives committee for their hard work in making this event possible.

clemson three minute thesis

As faculty, you are doing an outstanding job of developing the next generation of advanced degree researchers, and it has been impressive to witness first-hand the contributions your students are making towards the Clemson University research enterprise. Please let your graduate students know that CURF is here for them, and that we have several resources available to help them as they prepare for their respective careers.

Stay healthy and have a great holiday season!   Best, Chase

clemson three minute thesis

James Foster and Joshua Osuofa both won first place in their categories at the 2018 3MT competition.

Graduate students from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering won first place in both categories at Clemson University’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition on Nov. 2.

Joshua Osuofa won the graduate student category for his presentation, “Filters for faster production of Biologics,” and James Foster won the PhD candidate category for his presentation, “Innovative Materials for the Screening of Plutonium in Water Sources.” Dr. Scott Husson advises both students.

James will go on to represent Clemson at the February 2019 Conference of Southern Graduate Schools (CSGS) 3MT competition in Knoxville, TN.

3MT is a research communication competition that gives higher degree students just three minutes to present their work and its significance without using jargon to a non-specialist audience. This year, more than 50 students representing all colleges at the university participated in the competition.

Ferdinando Sereno wins 2024 UCL 3 Minute Thesis competition

12 June 2024

UCL Biochemical Engineering postgraduate research student Ferdinando Sereno presented his work investigating a novel way of making vaccines easier to store and transport based on his PhD titled "Development and production of a stable encapsulin-based mRNA vaccine."

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition was originally developed by the University of Queensland in 2008 and now takes place in over 600 universities across 65 countries worldwide. Postgraduate research students have a single slide and three minutes to present their research and we’re incredibly proud to announce that this year the UCL winner was Ferdinando Sereno from UCL Biochemical Engineering.   MRNA vaccines are one of the most critical health developments of the modern era - they saved us during the pandemic - but they have a major weakness: they need to be stored frozen or cold. This limitation presents a massive problem for the developing world, with millions of doses estimated to have been wasted during transport and storage.   In his 3MT, Ferdinando presented his research on developing encapsulin – a container for the mRNA that can protect it until it enters the body. If Ferdinando’s work succeeds, he will be helping to solve one of the world's biggest challenges – how to give the developing world access to effective vaccines and save millions of lives.
