The Princeton University Archives located in the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library is the official repository for Princeton University undergraduate senior theses from 1924 to the present.
Digital and Original Format Senior Theses
Members of the University community with an active NetID can access digital theses in Dataspace when connected to any Princeton-networked computer (if you’re not on campus, please first connect to the campus network via the GlobalProtect or SonicWall desktop applications).
Independent researchers who are not members of the University community (including Princeton alumni) should use the Library Catalog or DataSpace to browse senior theses.
Please create a Special Collections Research Account , if you don’t already have an active account, prior to submitting the Senior Thesis Order Form. In some cases we will be unable to digitize the senior thesis due to an embargo that prohibits digital access. Copyright of the theses are held by the author.
Senior Thesis Order Form
Please note: your order can only be fulfilled if you have completed the Senior Thesis Order Form and have a current Special Collections Research Account. Due to high volume, staff are unable to respond to requests without the necessary information.
Original Format Senior Theses - In person
- You are welcome to view senior theses that have not been scanned or born-digital in our reading room at Mudd Library . No appointment is needed during our academic hours which are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM - 4:45 PM.
- We recommend researchers create a Special Collections Research Account to submit online requests for material in advance of your visit. Material can be requested through the Princeton University Catalog . We encourage you to submit your requests in advance. Once you have arrived and been signed into the reading room, we will page up to 6 items at a time. If you are having any issues with registering or requesting materials, we can assist you by submitting an Ask Us! or when you arrive in person.
Please note : Researchers will be asked to show a photo ID such as a driver's license or academic/work ID upon arrival to Special Collections reading rooms. While it is not required at Mudd, we do recommend making your way to Firestone Library to obtain an Access Card as it will ease future visits. Should you not obtain an Access Card, you will need to show your photo ID at each visit to Mudd Library. Visitors to Firestone Library are required to obtain an Access Card to make it easy to enter the library's turnstiles.
Laptops, cell phones, cameras and pencils are permitted in the reading room. All other personal belongings can be placed in one of our free, secure lockers. More information about reading room guidelines can be found on our website . If you have accessibility needs that will impact your ability to conduct your research effectively or comfortably, please don’t hesitate to let me know and our team will do our best to accommodate you.
For additional information, please visit Theses & Dissertations page of our website. Please direct any questions you may have to Special Collections staff via Ask Us! .

University Archives Launches Digital Repository of Senior Theses
Written by Lynn Durgin
Update: LibGuide: How to Search, Request to View, and Order Princeton University Senior Theses
Through a joint project of the University Archives, the Office of the Dean of the College, and the Office of Information Technology, senior theses for the Classes of 2013, 2014, and all future classes will be collected and made accessible to the campus community via Princeton University’s digital repository, DataSpace .
The University Archives made the transition from collecting paper theses to theses in digital format (PDFs) to broaden accessibility of senior theses within the Princeton community. The Senior Thesis Collection is the most frequently used collection at the University Archives and, as such, are consulted by Princeton students at a rate of about 1,000 per year to explore topics, gather ideas for possible faculty advisers, find sources, gain familiarity with disciplinary writing styles, develop research methodologies for their own theses, and to generally understand what makes a good thesis. The DataSpace repository also has the capability to capture and deliver multiple file formats including text, video, audio, and image files.
“The senior thesis has a long history at Princeton ,” said University Archivist Dan Linke. “This is just the next chapter for this important aspect of a Princeton education.”
While most theses will be available in full-text on all Princeton-networked computers, a small number will only be available at computer terminals in the Mudd Manuscript Library, and none will be directly accessible to the general public. Senior theses submitted in 2012 and before will continue to be available in paper format at the Mudd Manuscript Library.
A direct link to the Senior Thesis Collection in DataSpace is available here: http://dataspace.princeton.edu/jspui/handle/88435/dsp019c67wm88m .
For more information on the Senior Thesis Collection, contact [email protected] .

Digital Archiving of Senior Theses
The Princeton University Archives in the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library is Princeton University’s central repository for senior theses submitted in fulfillment of the undergraduate degree requirements. This collection of more than 60,000 theses serves as an important resource for undergraduate research.
To enhance the reach and utility of this resource, the library has created a digital archive to enable members of the Princeton University community (students, faculty, staff) and other authorized users of the University's computing network to access copies of senior theses online. Subject to the limitations of copyright law, such authorized users may also make individual digital copies for private, scholarly purposes. This digital archive will not be freely available online to the general public, although the library will accommodate written requests for copies of theses from anyone who agrees to follow the limitations of copyright law and who also pays for any related costs.
Given a number of sensitivities surrounding the circulation of copyrighted materials in digital form, it is important that, as a graduating senior, you understand your options for depositing your work:
Online Access : Unless you elect either or both of the options described below, your thesis will be automatically deposited in the digital archive and accessible online to authorized users of the Princeton University computing network (as described above).
Walk-in Access Only : If you feel that your thesis should not be made accessible online via our computing network, you may elect to limit access to those who visit Mudd Library in person. These “walk-in” patrons, who may include members of the general public, will be able to access the archive at a designated computer terminal in Mudd Library and, subject to the limitations of copyright law, permitted to make copies of individual theses. Please note that a list of all theses in the University Archives is publicly available online.
- Embargo: To protect a compelling interest, you may request that your thesis be embargoed so that it remains completely inaccessible for a specific, limited period of time. For example, embargoing your thesis may be appropriate if its disclosure would compromise intellectual property or privacy interests, or if your thesis includes data that you or your faculty adviser are planning to publish at a later time. Please be sure to consult with your adviser if you have questions about the sensitivity of the data in your thesis. All embargo requests will be carefully reviewed.
If you wish to embargo your thesis for a specific period of time and/or restrict access to “walk-in” users of Mudd Library, please complete and submit a Restricted Access Form to the Office of the Dean of the College before your Commencement Ceremony.
If you wish to publish your thesis independently upon graduation, we ask that you consult with your faculty adviser before taking that step to confirm that its publication will not compromise the interests of others.
Please contact the Office of the Dean of the College ( [email protected] ) or the University Archives ( [email protected] ) if you have any questions.

- Freedom: a Documentary History of Emancipation, 1861-1867 by Steven Hahn (Editor); Steven F. Miller (Editor); Susan E. O'Donovan (Editor); John C. Rodrigue (Editor); Leslie S. Rowland (Editor) ISBN: 1469611082 Publication Date: 2014-06-24 Land and Labor, 1865 examines the transition from slavery to free labor during the tumultuous first months after the Civil War. Letters and testimony by the participants--former slaves, former slaveholders, Freedmen's Bureau agents, and others--reveal the connection between developments in workplaces across the South and an intensifying political contest over the meaning of freedom and the terms of national reunification. Essays by the editors place the documents in interpretive context and illuminate the major themes. In the tense and often violent aftermath of emancipation, former slaves seeking to ground their liberty in economic independence came into conflict with former owners determined to keep them dependent and subordinate. Overseeing that conflict were northern officials with their own notions of freedom, labor, and social order. This volume of Freedom depicts the dramatic events that ensued--the eradication of bondage and the contest over restoring land to ex-Confederates; the introduction of labor contracts and the day-to-day struggles that engulfed the region's plantations, farms, and other workplaces; the achievements of those freedpeople who attained a measure of independence; and rumors of a year-end insurrection in which ex-slaves would seize the land they had been denied and exact revenge for past oppression.
- Freedom: a Documentary History of Emancipation, 1861-1867 ISBN: 1469611090 Publication Date: 2014-06-24 Land and Labor, 1866-1867 examines the remaking of the South's labor system in the tumultuous aftermath of emancipation. Using documents selected from the National Archives, this volume of Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation depicts the struggle of unenfranchised and impoverished ex-slaves to control their own labor, establish their families as viable economic units, and secure independent possession of land. Among the topics addressed are the dispossession of settlers in the Sherman reserve, the reordering of labor on plantation and farm, nonagricultural labor, new relations of credit and debt, long-distance labor migration, and the efforts of former slaves to rent, purchase, and homestead land. The documents--many of them in the freedpeople's own words--speak eloquently for themselves, while the editors' interpretive essays provide context and illuminate major themes.

Studies in Iconography
Studies in Iconography is an annual journal hosted by the Index of Medieval Art and published in partnership with Medieval Institute Publications. It presents innovative work on the meaning of images from the medieval world broadly construed, between the fourth century and the year 1600. Past articles have addressed subjects as diverse as Byzantine fresco programs, Carolingian architectural diagrams, Gothic rent books, Jewish ritual images, and Islamicate stucco ornament. We encourage article submissions that offer interdisciplinary, theoretical, or critical perspectives. Works of both established and emerging scholars are welcome. Reviews of selected books on iconography and art history are included in every volume.
Contents of the latest journal may be found on the journal’s Scholarworks site .
