MPH Degree Specialization Tracks
We are proud to offer 5 tracks within our MPH degree, allowing students to specialize.
At the end of term three, students participate in a 120-hour on-site practicum and complete a capstone/thesis to finish up their public health degree program.
Each practicum is tailored to the students individual program, providing real-life, hands-on experience in their chosen public health concentration.
Practicums have been held in over 170 site locations, in over 30 countries around the world.
Epidemiology Track
The epidemiology track focuses on population patterns and causes of diseases and health problems. Students will learn to characterize the patterns and causes of disease and learn to develop approaches to prevent and control their spread. Track-required courses address research methods, quantitative reasoning, and investigation methods for addressing topics of contemporary public health importance.

Environmental And Occupational Health Track
The environmental and occupational health track is designed to help students gain insights into environmental factors that can affect human health, including in-depth analysis of sustainable approaches to eliminate and/or minimize any adverse impacts of these interactions. Track-required courses provide students with the background to address topics in occupational health, industrial hygiene, waste and water management, and air pollution control.
Global Health Track
The Global Health Track in the MPH program at SGU will prepare students for analytical, practical and strategic decision-making within the global health environment. The main goal is to equip graduates with knowledge and skills to manage, lead and/or contribute to governmental and non-governmental organizations to achieve health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Emphasizing a multi-disciplinary, systems thinking approach, the curriculum includes projects that highlight innovative, equitable, and cost-effective solutions for solving complex and diverse challenges in disease prevention and control. Students will have access to diverse faculty, academic resources, networking opportunities, and support as they complete coursework towards developing specific foundational knowledge and skills in global health. This track is offered asynchronously, making it the most flexible online track.

Strong, Global Partnerships
Our strong ties to global health organizations are just a few of the dimensions that contribute to the academic experiences that our MPH students receive.
We serve as a World Health Organization Collaborating Center (WHO CC) in Environmental and Occupational Health and a United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Regional Collaborating Center (UNFCCC, RCC).
The faculty is encouraged to participate in research collaboration with other public health institutions.
Our relationships with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute of Health (NIH), University of the West Indies, and many others are paramount to our success as a program.
We have service links with Grenada’s Ministries of Health and Agriculture, as well as regional and international agencies, such as the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the World Health Organization.
The DPHPM hosts the Gamma Kappa Chapter of the Delta Omega Honors Society in Public Health.
“I credit SGU for offering the unique opportunity to attain both my DVM and MPH simultaneously, an opportunity which broadened my exposure to the field of research and its global application in public health and guided my current path, of which I am most proud.”
“When I was young, I wanted to change some parts of medicine but didn’t have the capacity to do so. But now I do. Seeing how hard my family worked has motivated me to push for equal healthcare access for every individual and community.”

Costa Rica Selective
The Global Health Costa Rica Selective is embedded in some of the most pressing challenges in the field of global health: achieving universal health care, migration, sustainable food production, and the demographic, nutritional, and epidemiological transitions. Global health, as a field of study, has emerged as a priority for the social and biological sciences. The Global Health Costa Rica Selective immerses students in experiential learning in a collaborative environment. The experience-based learning opportunities emphasize multisectoral and transdisciplinary approaches to managing global health inequities. Students will engage in field visits, workshops, case study analysis, and presentations on critical issues in global health. Students will interact with indigenous communities, the “Basic Teams of Global Health Care” (EBAIS) system, the Costa Rica-Panama border health post, the Ministry of Health regional office operations, and ecosystem services in the Osa Peninsula.
If you are interested in participating in the Global Health Costa Rica Selective, please contact Dr. Lindonne Telesford at [email protected]
