Fearless: The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy SEAL Team SIX Operator Adam Brown

The story of a man of extremes, whose courage and determination were fueled by faith, family, and the love of a woman. It’s about a man who waged a war against his own worst impulses, including drug addiction, and persevered to reach the top tier of the U.S. military.

In a deeply personal and absorbing chronicle, Fearless reveals a glimpse inside the SEAL Team SIX brotherhood, and presents an indelible portrait of a highly trained warrior whose final act of bravery led to the ultimate sacrifice.

Adam Brown was a devoted man who was an unlikely hero but a true warrior, described by all who knew him as…fearless.

Find out what a Navy SEAL has to say about Setbacks and Success

“ As a rule, we don’t endorse books or movies or anything regarding the command where I work—and Adam Brown worked—but as the author writes in Fearless, ‘you have to know the rules, so you know when to bend or break them.’ This is one of those times. Read this book. Period. It succeeds where all the others have failed .” — Anonymous SEAL Team SIX Operator

Question: Who was Navy SEAL Adam Brown?

Answer: Adam Brown was a highly decorated member of the United States Navy SEALs. He was born on May 13, 1974, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and tragically lost his life in combat on March 17, 2010, in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan.

Adam Brown’s life story gained attention due to his remarkable journey of overcoming personal challenges, including struggles with addiction, to become a respected and elite Navy SEAL. Despite facing obstacles, he demonstrated exceptional determination and commitment to serving his country.

Brown enlisted in the Navy in 1998 and eventually joined the SEALs . He participated in numerous combat missions and earned several commendations for his bravery and skill. His actions in the line of duty earned him the Bronze Star with Valor and the Silver Star.

Adam Brown’s story is detailed in the book “Fearless: The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy SEAL Team SIX Operator Adam Brown,” written by Eric Blehm. The book highlights his courage, resilience, and the sacrifices he made in service to his country.

fear less book review

Book Review: Fear Less, Dr Pippa Grange

Thanks to Ebrury, Penguin Random House, and Netgalley for a copy of Fear Less in exchange for an honest review.

When I first heard about Fear Less, I was so excited – psychology has always been fascinating to me (more on that over the next few months) and popular psychology books written by actual psychologists are the most fascinating. Fear Less promises to look at why and how fear impacts our lives, and provide a long term roadmap for improving our relationship to fear.

I was, unfortunately, pretty quickly let down. There is no starting definition for fear to ground the book within a defined context. Grange also calls out in the introduction that there will be no data and statistics mentioned – always a warning sign for me in popular psychology. One reason I enjoy popular psychology written by psychologists is the chance to see their, and others, research used on a more accessible scale. To not have that research and evidence reduces the legitimacy of the many claims that Grange makes in this book; they become statements that anyone could have made with no clarifiers or proof. Yes, too much data will disengage your readers but without it, I struggle to believe in the writers mission. Grange states that she will instead back up her methods with anecdotes – which, in the first half of the book, turn out to be celebrity rags to riches stories that you could find with a two minute google. When Grange does give her own real-world examples, they suffer from being almost exclusively from the sports industry or the army. This makes sense given Grange’s background, but meant I really had to focus to stay interested in the book given I have no interest in either.

I also have a serious problem with any book that tries to explain why we feel fear, or shame, or anxiety, without even mentioning capitalism. Grange makes a sweeping statement early on that it is ‘just human nature’ to be competitive. This statement is backed up by no further reading or studies – it sets a tone for the book that felt wrong to me given its proclaimed mission. At one point in Part 1, Grange states ‘The British class system is a masterclass in tribalism’ without giving any context as to what she means by that statement, or indeed what backs it up. That lack of engagement with wider issues that will be impacting her readers takes away significantly from Grange’s aims.

Despite all of that, Fear Less did redeem itself slightly the further in I got. Grange does quote actual science in the second part of the book when addressing how our bodies and minds respond to fear, in one of the books most interesting sections. Part 3 also features stories from those who have conquered fear, and these would have been so well used throughout rather than just at the end (for the examples of those who have overcome fear in Part 1, Grange lists a celebrity who ‘had to’ go to free yoga classes while auditioning…)

The Fear Less manifesto, the final chapter of the book, is actually fantastic and I will return to that again. It has actionable points and is empathetic and useful, with no sweeping statements without evidence or strange celebrity stories to patronise you. I’d like to see that published or available as its own standalone essay, and I’d easily recommend it.

For the book as a whole though, I’d not recommend without also letting people know the drawbacks – Fear Less won’t be budging Brene Brown or Dave Aldred from the top of my list of support for those who want to learn more about anxiety and fear.

Date read: 03.03.2017. How strongly I recommend it: 9/10.

Fearless: The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy SEAL Team SIX Operator Adam Brown, by Eric Blehm on Amazon.

TARGET AUDIENCE

It is safe to say that the draw of this book reaches far and wide as conversations about terrorism, military personnel and pondering about the validity of war now permeates 21st century humanity. People want to point to a hero in the midst of a sea of uncertainty. Thus it is easy to gravitate toward Adam Brown. This book honors military personnel while giving civilians an extensive panorama into the complex life of an American soldier. As a cross-cultural missionary, I would also add that there are many layers and similarities between the life of a soldier and the Christian missions endeavor. The overtone of faith broadly expands the reach of this book.

CONTENT QUALITY

This book writes itself. This I say with no ill intention to the author. He does a good job of walking the reader through the life of a modern day hero, Navy SEAL Adam Brown. Simply put, Adam’s life was a unique example of bravery for many of us who live what we might consider much more “normal” lives. This book is not one that encourages highlighting specific texts or statements. I found myself cruising through each chapter, drifting to into the depths of Adam’s life: His victories, struggles, his humanity. At times I would pause, teary eyed or delighted, struck by how closely I resonated with his desire for meaning and purpose. His story begins (and continues midway through the book) as an unembellished recollection of life events. Then somewhere in the middle of the book the story turns to a jaw-dropping narrative of faith, sacrifice and fearlessness.

MESSAGE CLARITY

There are many lessons to be learned in this book, but I feel that the overarching message is found in the humanity of an individual who craves, freedom, justice and purpose. I walked away from this book with a poignant sense of my own longing to be a faithful husband, a loving father, a better man, while pursuing a path that carries eternal significance. Christian faith is the underlying foundation of this story, and though the author himself does not claim to share these beliefs, he writes with unbiased opinion about the Christian faith he encounters in the life of Adam brown. I found the author’s religious neutrality and dedication to an unvarnished faith account quite refreshing.

CREATIVE STYLE

The inclusion of notes, letters, inscriptions of medals and honorary mentions placed between the ongoing narrative was very agreeable. This book is predominantly chronological with occasional glimpses into the past. This made the book an easy read, but for my taste, lacked a creative edge. That being said, I will reiterate that this book writes itself. The story of Adam Brown’s life is an exceptional one and therefore an inspiring read. I generally like to catch glimpses of the internal struggles taking place in the hearts or minds of a character. Fearless did describe these sensations, albeit, in my opinion, not as in depth as I would have liked to hear them.

LANGUAGE SELECTION

Generally when I write about the language selection found in a book I am reviewing, I consider broad vocabulary, creative texts and introspective thoughts. For this particular book, this section might be better suited in describing the overall “flavor” or “feel” of how this book is aptly recorded. In my opinion, the occasional swear words and stark humanity that the narrative describes is much more believable when the word “shit” is used in place of the dumbed-down expression “crap”, “darn” or “shoot”. The author’s manner of communication felt “real world” and palatable, yet not tasteless or crass.

OVERALL IMPACT

There were several times when I felt my eyes well up with moisture as I read Fearless. As a cross-cultural missionary for the past 20 years, I resonated with the comings and goings of a military man; of leaving family, missing loved ones, and questioning one’s own validity of heroism. Adam Brown’s humility shines forth in this book. He never considered himself a hero, though his admiration of bravery for the men around him was poignant. This “fearless” attitude and outlook on life is an example that I hope to follow. Fearlessness blended with humility makes a man strong. I find myself particularly challenged and motivated simply to be the man I was made to be while pursuing the purpose God has placed upon my life.

10 POINT RATING

I give Fearless a 9/10.
