Ph.D. in Physics

The Department of Physics, MIT-WPU offers a highly research-intensive PhD programme and provides students with excellent facilities and expert guidance to support their research endeavors. The programme is designed to help postgraduate students develop research skills and prepare for careers in academia or research. The programme provides specialised training in research components such as hypothesis creation, research questions, literature review, research ethics, and the use of online tools and resources. The programme has a strong focus on interdisciplinary research and encourages students to pursue innovative and entrepreneurial ideas in their chosen areas of study.

The areas of research at the Department are Applied Physics, Computational Physics, Theoretical High energy Physics, Quantum Gravity, Material Science, Surface Physics, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Photonics, Plasmonics, Nonlinear Optics, Radiation physics, Spectroscopy, Nanomaterials, Nanocomposite and nano/micro structured growth and characterization of for various applications in, chemical and biosensors, data storage, detector, energy storage, and conversion applications.

Ph.D Programme Fees

The following candidates are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme

Candidates who have completed:

i) A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institutions accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the commission from time to time.

Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of commission from time to time.

ii) Candidates who have completed the M. Phil programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of commission from time to time.

Reservation is applicable only to Maharashtra domicile candidates provided they submit the necessary documents for reservation before interview. Outside Maharashtra candidates will be considered in open category.

1. Candidates satisfying eligibility criterion shall be called to appear for the Ph.D. entrance test conducted by MITWPU. The exemption will be given from Ph.D. entrance test for those students who qualify UGC-NET /UGC-CSIR NET /GATE (valid score)/CEED/GPAT (valid score)and similar national tests.

2. PhD entrance test shall be qualifying with qualifying marks as 50% provided that relaxation from 50% to 45% shall be allowed for the candidates belongs to SC/ST/OBC (Non creamy layer)/Differently abled category, Economically Weaker section (EWS) and other category of candidates. The syllabus of entrance test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

3. The interview/viva-voce will be conducted by the university for test qualifying candidates. For selection of candidates a weightage of 70% to the entrance test and 30% to the performance in the interview/Viva-voce shall be given. For GATE/NET/JRF /SET/GPAT/CEED qualified students, the selection will be based on Interview/Viva Voce

4. The recommended candidates will be intimated through email about their selection and the candidates will be offered Ph.D. provisional admission.

5. The eligibility of a candidate is provisional as per information provided by the candidate in his/her application form and is subject to verification of minimum eligibility conditions for admission to the program, educational documents and reservation documents (if any).

6. University keep rights to cancel admission of the Ph.D. scholars in the case of misconduct by the scholar, unsatisfactory progress/absent for consecutive two progress seminars, failure in any examination related to Ph.D., fabrication found in educational and reservation documents, candidate is found ineligible, involved in plagiarism in paper publications and thesis.

7. Provisional eligibility to appear in the selection process is no guarantee for admission to the program.

8. Candidates who will join PhD program full time, they will be provided with the stipend as per MITWPU norms.

9. PhD admission will be confirmed after successful completion of the course work with 55% or more as per UGC norms. Ph.D. programme should be minimum of three years including course work and maximum of six years from the date of admission to the Ph.D. programme.

10. A maximum of an additional two years (2) years can be given through the process of re-registration provided, however, that the total period for completion of a Ph.D. programme should not exceed eight (8) years from the date of admission in the Ph.D. programme.

11. Provided further that, female Ph.D. scholars and persons with Disabilities (having more than 40% disability) may be allowed an additional relaxation of two years(2) ; however the total period for completion of a Ph.D. program in such cases should not exceed ten (10) years from the date of admission of the programme.

12. Female candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave for up to 240 days in the entire duration of Ph.D. programme.

Department of Physics, consisting of 20 faculty members, is actively involved in the advanced research area and teaching programs (M.Sc. (Physics, PhD and Minor in Physics) of the institute.

Research Areas

The Department lays special emphasis on research work in various areas of specialization that include:

Atomic and Molecular Physics
Astronomy and Cosmology
Statistical Physics and Complex Systems
Condensed Matter Physics
Nuclear and Particle Physics
Optical and Plasma Physics
M.Sc. (Physics) or Equivalent Degree with a minimum of 60% marks.
Shortlisted Candidates will be called for a written test which will be followed by an interview.
Candidates who have cleared the CSIR-JRF will be exempted from the written test.
Candidates working in reputed Govt. and Private organizations can apply for a part time PhD program.
Monthly Institute Fellowship of Rs. 28,000 (if M.Sc. or EquivalentDegree) will be provided initially to the full-time PhD students which will be enhanced from time to time subject to performance.

Full-time PhD students admitted into the PhD program are eligible to be considered for an Institute fellowship of Rs. 28,000 or Rs. 31,000 per month in the first year based on their qualifications at the time of admission.
Students admitted with M.E./M.Tech./M.Pharm./MBA/M.Phil. or an equivalent Degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 31,000/-.
Students admitted with M.Sc./B.E./B.Pharm. or an equivalent degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 28,000/-. These students on successful completion of coursework will receive Rs. 31,000/- from the Semester following the one in which the course work was completed.
Higher fellowship may be made available in subsequent years. Consideration for Institute fellowship will be as per Institute norms. It will be obligatory on the part of every admitted Full time student to undertake 8 to 10 hours (per week) of work as assigned to him/her by the institute.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development under the supervision of the Central Government of India has launched a scholarship scheme to provide financial support to meritorious students going for a PhD. Offered to the candidates via IISc and IIT corridors, it is one of the prestigious PhD scholarships in India. Under the scheme, the scholar gets a monthly stipend of ₹70,000 for first-year which is increased to ₹80,000 per month during the 4th and 5th year of the program. The scholarship is offered every year and scholars from all universities in India can apply for the scheme through the official website.

Another addition to the list of popular PhD scholarships in India is the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship. It is awarded to scholars who have registered themselves for a PhD at an Indian University. These fellowships spanning over 6-9 months are designed to help students advance their research in a vast range of fields like Sociology, Public Health, History, Machine Learning , etc. One of the popular scholarships for Indian students , it broadly covers the expenses related to a J-1 visa, Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges, monthly stipend, round-trip economy class air travel, other allowances, and modest affiliation fees. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Scholarship is another PhD scholarship offered to Indians as well as students of Asian countries. It provides selected candidates with maintenance fees including the tuition cost of their program worth 18,000 INR every month as well as contingent costs of books, stationery, etc. worth 15,000 INR every month. The eligibility for Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Scholarships is as follows:

Age limit: Not less than 35 years
First-division postgraduate degree holder
A minimum of 60% in undergraduate and postgraduate level
Must have applied for a PhD program at a recognised university in India
For full-time PhD programs

Amongst the top PhD scholarships in India for postgraduates in the field of Physics and Astronomy, Physical Research Laboratory Junior Research Fellowship is offered in the following specialisations:

It is exclusively for PhD research at Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) and provides monthly awards of up to 35,000 INR. The eligibility criteria for this scholarship are as follows:

For Indian nationals under the age of 28 years
The candidate must have a Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Engineering as well as a Master of Science / Master of Engineering degree
First-division, i.e. 60% or equivalent in undergraduate as well as postgraduate degree.
Must have qualified GATE or CSIR NET or Joint Entrance Screening Test

This fellowship program is offered by Google for aspiring PhD scholars in Computer Science or related specializations. The Google Ph.D. Fellowship India Program provides a monthly fellowship amount as well as covers the contingency expenses along with giving an internship offer at Google. The requirements for this Google Scholarship for PhD in India are:

The candidate must be enrolled in a PhD course at a recognised university in India.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree holder from a university in India
A working professional at a recognised organisation in India

ICHR Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) are for PhD aspirants of Historical Studies and are offered by the Indian Council of Historical Research. It offers a monthly stipend of up to 17,600 INR as well as monthly contingency expenses of 16,500 p.a. for 2 years. The only eligibility requirement for this scholarship is that the applicant must be enrolled in a PhD in Historical Studies at a recognized higher education institution in India.

The Council of Social Science Research of MHRD, Government of India offers doctoral fellowships in Social Sciences to PhD scholars who are registered in a UGC-recognized Indian university. A great opportunity for scholars looking for PhD scholarships in India, it is strictly applicable for two years and the value of the fellowship is ₹20,000 per month. Offered in around 25 subjects of Social Sciences that include Political Science, Social Work, Gender Studies, Public Administration , etc, to be eligible for the fellowship, a candidate must have confirmed PhD registration at a recognized university. The application process for the 2019-20 session has already been closed but you should be prepared for the 2021-22 session to avail the benefits.

The fellowship is provided by the Ministry of Minority Affairs of the Government of India. The objective of the fellowship is to provide students from minority communities with financial assistance to pursue higher education such as MPhil and PhD. The Maulana Azad National fellowship can be availed by taking admission to any of the recognized universities in the country. One of the lesser-known PhD scholarships in India, it is awarded to those candidates whose family income is not more than 6 Lakh. Under the scheme, the scholar gets ₹28,000 per month for 5 years. Candidates can apply for the fellowship on the official website of UGC.

The intake of students into IUCAA's Ph.D. Programme is through

IUCAA National Admission Test (INAT)

INAT is conducted by Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune. This test and the subsequent interviews are generally conducted in the first week of January every year at IUCAA Pune. The written exam for INAT-2023 will be held on Wednesday, February 08, 2023 at various screening centers, followed by online interviews of selected candidates on February 08 - 09, 2022. Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)

This test is usually conducted at IUCAA, Pune, and at other centres in India on the third Sunday of February every year. For more details about JEST, test syllabus, sample question papers, etc. please visit http://www.jest.org.in/

CSIR-UGC NET for JRF (Physics)

Only those who have qualified for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in the previous two years are eligible to apply. Those who have qualified for only Lecturership are NOT ELIGIBLE.

Eligibility:

The academic year at IUCAA begins in August every year. Students, who expect to complete their M.Sc. degree (in Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Electronics, or Astronomy) or B.E./ B.Tech./ M.E./ M.Tech. degree (in any branch) with 55% marks or more by July are eligible to apply. In addition, talented final year B.Sc., 1 st year M.Sc. (in Physics / Applied Physics / Electronics / Astronomy / Applied Mathematics), 2 nd / 3 rd year Integreted M.Sc. and 2 nd / 3 rd year B.E. / B.Tech. (any branch) students can also apply to be PRE-SELECTED for research scholarship (to do Ph.D.) at IUCAA. A relaxation of 5% in the qualifying marks, from 55% to 50%, is applicable for candidates belonging to SC/ ST/ OBC-NCL/ EWS or Person with Disabilities (PwD) category.

We are looking for highly motivated students with consistently good academic record. Students who have already completed the above degrees can also apply. Selection to research scholarship is through a written test and interviews.

Application procedure, shortlisting of candidates and interviews:

INAT: The application procedure is completely online. Offline applications are not accepted. No fees is charged for applying. Screening committees involving IUCAA faculty members evaluate the applications and shortlist students for the written test. All such shortlisted students are informed by email. Interviews are conducted immediately after the written test and during the next couple of days, depending on the total number of students to be interviewed.
JEST: The application procedure is completely online. Offline applications are not accepted. An application fee is charged, details of which are available at https://www.jest.org.in/ This test is conducted at various cities throughout India. After the declaration of JEST results, students are required to apply online. Screening committees involving IUCAA faculty members evaluate the applications and shortlist students for interviews. All such shortlisted students are informed by email. Interviews are conducted either during May or June every year.
CSIR-UGC NET for JRF (Physics): Students are required to apply online. Screening committees involving IUCAA faculty members evaluate the applications and shortlist students for interviews. All such shortlisted students are informed by email. Interviews are conducted either during May or June every year. Please note that the student has to produce a letter from the CSIR-UGC informing qualification as JRF at the time of interview.

Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs in physics

IMSc offers Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs in physics.

Applicants for the Ph.D. program should have completed a masters' degree in physics by the time they join the program.

Applicants for the Integrated Ph.D. program should have completed a bachelor's degree in physics or a B.E./B.Tech degree by the time they join the program.

Admission to both these programs will be opened to students who have qualified for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of the UGC-CSIR NET examination or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) [see details below].

The last date for submitting applications for the programs -- 21 April 2024 .

Last date for submission for reference letters -- 1 May 2024 .

Note : Receipt of a complete application before the deadline does not guarantee an interview spot. Based on the applications we receive, we will shortlist candidates for the in-person interview; shortlist to be announced soon after last date of applications.

Additional notes

(a) Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Biotechnology/ Chemistry/ Physics/ Mathematics/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences/ Agriculture as applicable to individual discipline, under the 10+2+3/4 system, are eligible to apply to this program.

(b) The minimum requirement for admission to the Integrated Ph D programme is a FIRST CLASS or equivalent Grade in the Bachelor’s degree (as declared by the University) as indicated against each department.

(d) Some departments have specific requirements of subjects at the Bachelor’s or 10+2 levels. Candidates have to ensure that they meet these requirements.

(e) Those in the final year of their qualifying examination and awaiting results are also eligible to apply. However, they should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree, including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc., by the time of joining.

(f) While the regular PhD program allows an exemption from GATE scores for students with a 4-year degree from a CFTI and with a >= 8.0 CGPA out of 10.0, this is not applicable to Integrated PhD programme.

The short-listing of candidates for in-person(offline) interview is done based on the performance in JAM 2024. Short listing for Physical Sciences is also done based on JEST 2024. The selection of candidates for admission to research programmes is through an interview to be held at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. To see Important Dates

Selection – For Biological, Physical and Mathematical Sciences selection will be based on the combined performance in the Test and in Interview. For Chemical Sciences, selection will be based only on the performance in the Interview.

Candidates written the following papers in JAM are eligible for the discipline(s) to which they seek admission.

(a) The interview letters for the short-listed candidates will be sent by email and the same is available on the Applicant’s interface after login to the Admission Portal. Such candidates shall make necessary arrangements for attending the interview. No separate communication will be sent by post. TA (second class sleeper class train fare) will be paid to all the SC/ST candidates who attend the in-person interview.

(b) Candidates called for an interview have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation etc.

(c) Candidates called for an interview should bring with them attested copies of all the transcripts (marks cards from SSLC or equivalent onwards, degree certificates of the qualifying examination, etc.) and produce them before the interview committee, failing which, they will not be interviewed.

(d) Candidates belonging to the SC/ST category should bring the original caste/tribe certificates, issued by competent authorities for purposes of verification.

(e) If you belong to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) – you must produce the original Income and Asset Certificate issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.

(f) If you belong to OBC-NCL catregory – you must produce the valid OBC-NCL issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.

(g) Candidate belonging to PwD (person-with-disability), KM (Kashmiri-Migrant) categories should produce the originals of the appropriate certificates, issued as per Government of India rules, and Kashmiri Pandit/Kashmiri Hindu Family living in Kashmiri valley should produce Kashmiri valley domicle certificate.

(h) The offer letter for the selected candidates will be posted on Applicant’s interface on IISc Admission portal under Application Status. You can download the offer letter and make necessary arrangements including payment of fees etc. No separate communication will be sent by post.

(i) The candidates admitted to the Integrated Ph D programmes should report to the Institute for completing admission formalities.

(j) At the time of joining, candidates should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc.

(k) Only candidates who produce all the mark sheets and degree certificates (original or provisional) issued by the University Authority will be given regular admission.

(l) Candidates who are awaiting results but have completed all formalities for the award of a degree should produce at the time of joining, a Course-Completion Certificate, issued by the Head of the institution (The Principal/Registrar). Such candidates will be given only provisional admission, which will be regularized on their producing all the marks sheets and degree certificates (original, or provisional) etc., issued by the University Authority on or before 31 October 2024, failing which, the provisional admission stands cancelled.

(m) Candidates who are given provisional admission are eligible for a scholarship only on regularisation of admission (on production of the required documents). They will be paid a scholarship with retrospective effect, i.e., from the date of joining.

NOTE: The results for some of the recent National Entrance Tests, such as GATE/ JAM etc, may not be available at the time of submitting the IISc admissions application. You must enter the available details of these exams, such as your enrolment/ roll number, paper, etc., in the application, but you may leave the score/rank/results blank. You will have the option to update your national entrance results in the application from the main “Application Status” page. You must make this update within 3 days of the results being declared.

WISE Fellowship for Ph.D. (WISE-PhD)

The "WISE Fellowship for Ph.D. (WISE-PhD)" of the Department of Science and Technology aims to provide opportunity to carry out Doctoral research in basic and applied sciences to women scientists and technologists between the age group of 27-45 years who want to pursue research in STEM fields as bench-level scientist.

Vision: WISE-PhD provides opportunity to women to pursue higher education, i.e., Ph.D. through independent project grant.

Objectives: The main objective of WISE-PhD is to encourage women scientists to conduct Doctoral research in science and engineering and to engage them in knowledge dissemination through SSR.

Target Group: Women who have Post Graduation in Basic or Applied Sciences or equivalent degree and wish to pursue PhD in basic & applied sciences can apply in WISE-PhD programme for financial support. Women in regular employment are not eligible for this programme.

Scientific Disciplines: Under WISE-PhD, support is available in 5 scientific disciplines viz. (1) Physical and Mathematical Sciences [PM]; (2) Chemical Sciences [CS]; (3) Life Sciences [LS]; (4) Earth and Atmospheric Sciences [EA]; and (5) Engineering & Technology [ET]

Eligibility:

Educational Qualification: Women Scientists having Post-Graduate Degree in Basic/ Applied Science or equivalent degree like M. Phil., M. Tech., M. Pharm., etc. or B.Tech.are eligible for WISE-PhD.
Age: The minimum age to apply in the programme is 27 years and maximum is 45 years (Relaxation of 3 years in the upper age limit is allowed for SC/ ST/ PH candidates). Women scientists, less than 27 years of age are NOT eligible. Cut-off date for age calculation wouldbe the date of submission of WISE-PhD application.
Who Can Apply: Unemployed women who want to pursue Ph.D. can apply for fellowship under WISE-PhD. The programme is open for both candidates; those who have not yet registered as well as who have already registered for Ph.D., but not availing fellowship from any sources. Although, candidates who have completed two (2) years duration in Ph.D. as onthe date of application are NOT eligible.

Financial Support :This Programme provides fellowship of the applicant @Rs. 37,000/- per monthalong withHouse Rent Allowances (HRA) as per norms, Research Grant of Rs. 1.00 lakh per year and Institutional overhead charges @Rs. 0.50 lakh per year.

Duration :The project tenure is up to maximum 5 years duration.

The following awards will be available to the candidates applying for the different types of PhD Scholarships in India:-


Google Ph.D. Fellowship India	The selected candidates will receive a fellowship of USD 50,000 for a duration of 4 years to cover stipend and other research-related expenses, including travel expenses including overseas travel. The candidates in the last stage of their Ph.D. will receive USD 10,000 to recognize research contributions, cover stipend and other research-related activities, and travel expenses including overseas travel.
SAARC Agricultural PhD Scholarships	Tuition fee Economy airfare One time grant worth USD 1000 to cover the expenditure of books, study materials, etc A grant of USD 1000 per year to cover research costs Living allowance of USD 600 per month for a period of 3 years

Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF)	Year 1 – INR 70,000 per month Year 2 – INR 70,000 per month Year 3 – INR 75,000 per month Year 4 – INR 80,000 per month Year 5 – INR 80,000 per month Additionally, each fellow will also receive a research grant of INR 2 Lakh per year for up to 5 years to cover academic contingency expenses and for foreign/national travel expenses. The tenure of fellowship will be four years for students from integrated courses and five years for B. Tech (or equivalent) students. For students selected through the lateral entry channel, the PMRF scholarship and obligations will continue only for the remainder of the student’s stay in the doctoral programme. No retrospective payment will be made.

SAARC Agricultural Ph.D. Scholarships	To be eligible, an applicant must: Be a regular employee of the National Agricultural Research, Education and Extension System from SAARC Member Countries (except Afghanistan and Bangladesh)Show interest in pursuing a Ph.D. study in Agricultural BiotechnologyBe below the age of 40 at the time of application Have a Master’s degree in agricultural sciences/plant breeding/agricultural biotechnology/cytogenetics from a recognized university Have an excellent academic record Have a good command of spoken and written EnglishNote: Candidates having work experience and publications on Agricultural Biotechnology and related fields will be given preference.

Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Scholarships	The applicant must – Be below 35 years of age Be a full-time PhD scholar Be already registered/admitted for a Ph.D. degree with a recognized University/Institution in India Have a first-class postgraduate degree with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate at both graduate and postgraduate levels
Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF)	Apply for a PhD programme at one of the PMRF granting institutes either through direct entry channel or lateral entry channelFor Direct Entry ChannelThe applicants must satisfy one of the following criteria -Have completed or been pursuing the final year of 4- (or 5) year undergraduate or 5-year integrated M.Tech or 5-year integrated M.Sc. or 2-year M.Sc. or 5-year undergraduate-postgraduate dual degree programs in Science and Technology streams from IISc/IITs/NITs/IISERs/IIEST and centrally funded universities with a CGPA/CPI of at least 8.0 (on a 10 point scale) or equivalent, ORHave completed or been pursuing the final year of 4- (or 5) year undergraduate or 5-year integrated M.Tech or 5-year integrated M.Sc. or 2-year M.Sc. or 5-year undergraduate-postgraduate dual degree programs in Science and Technology streams from any other (not covered in the first point) Institute/University recognized in India with a CGPA/CPI of at least 8.0 (on a 10-point scale) or equivalent apart from a minimum score of 650 in the respective GATE subject, ORHave qualified GATE and be pursuing or have completed M.Tech./MS by Research at one of PMRF granting institutions having a minimum CGPA or CPI of 8.0 (on a 10-point scale) at the end of the first semester with a minimum of four coursesFor Lateral Entry ChannelThe applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria – Be pursuing PhD in one of the PMRF granting institutions and have completed at most 12 months in the PhD programme (if they have joined the programme with a Master’s degree), OR have completed at most 24 months in the PhD programme (if they have joined the programme with a Bachelor’s degree)Have completed at least four courses in the PhD programme, each of which should be a full-semester courseHave obtained an aggregate CGPA of 8.5 (out of 10) or higher
Vision India Foundation (VIF) Fellowship	The candidate should have a relevant master’s/Ph.D. degree. Fellows from all educational backgrounds are accepted. Fellows have a work experience of two or more years.
ICHR Junior Research Fellowships (JRF)	Registered in a recognized University for a Ph.D. programme in Historical Studies

DSI-NRF Postgraduate Student Funding for the 2025 Academic Year

The DSI and NRF are pleased to announce a call for new applications for DSI-NRF Postgraduate Student Funding for the academic year 2025. All continuing students who are eligible for a second or third year of funding must submit a Progress Report and not a new application.

The NRF minimum academic requirement for postgraduate funding is 65% . The entry age requirement is 28, 30 and 32 years or younger for honours, master’s and doctoral studies respectively, in the year of application, regardless of the first year of registration. Successful applicants will be funded either at Full Cost of Study (FCS) or Partial Cost of Study (PCS) . The FCS funding will be awarded to South African citizens and Permanent Residents only, who are either financially needy (i.e., those whose combined household family income is less than or equals to R350 000 per annum), living with a disability or exceptional academic achievers .

However, the PCS funding will be awarded to 5% of international students including South African citizens and Permanent Residents who could not be funded under FCS but meet other minimum requirements for the NRF scholarship funding criteria. The scholarships are intended to support honours, master’s and doctoral candidates to pursue studies in all areas of Science, Engineering, Technology, Social Sciences, and Humanities .

All the postgraduate students will be expected to apply on the NRF Connect System by accessing the link: https://nrfconnect.nrf.ac.za/ . No manual applications will be accepted .

Phd 2024/25 in PHYSICS

The PhD in Physics aims at training young physicists capable of successfully tackling modern research topics and therefore ready to undertake an academic career or enter the social world with the skills necessary to guide the transition to innovation, sustainability and to cooperation at every level. To this end, the course provides advanced knowledge, trains in laboratory work and in the collaboration within research groups and prepares young people with strong communication skills for the transfer of knowledge and scientific dissemination. The first year of the course is dedicated to training on speciﬁc topics, ranging from the physics of fundamental interactions, both theoretical and experimental, to the physics of condensed matter, complex and biological systems, up to applications in the astro-particle physics and in material science. PhD students are free to choose national and international advanced courses provided by ours or other universities or research institutes. Each PhD student follows a detailed program, agreed with a supervisor and approved by the Teaching Board. The second and third years are dedicated to research activity with the supervision of a scientific advisor and possibly a co-supervisor. At the end of the second year, each PhD student illustrates the scientific activities carried out, the results obtained and possible future developments in a formal seminar. Participation in seminars and conferences is strongly encouraged, as is collaboration and scientific exchange with other prestigious research groups. At the end of the third year, the doctoral student writes the doctoral thesis which is evaluated by national and international external reviewers and presented to the Teaching Board. After approval, the theses are defended in the final exam before a commission appointed by the Rector of the University.
