‘Nine’ review: Psycho thriller treading unfamiliar terrains

Jenuse mohamed's nine is a thriller with streaks of paranormal, built on a straight, uncluttered screenplay.

Nine has a canvas dripping reds and blacks — twilight seeping into the screen and setting various tones of grotesque, faces illuminated by the eerie glow of candles and frames exploring the texture of darkness. Its storyline stems from an intriguing premise, a cosmic phenomenon that leaves the earth without power and communication for a period spanning nine days. At the same time, Nine is not any desi sci-fi classic nor is its hero engaged in some doomsday adventure to save the galaxy. It's more of a psycho thriller with streaks of paranormal, built on a straight, uncluttered screenplay.

Nine follows astrophysicist Albert (Prithviraj) and his 7-year-old son Adam (Alok) who reach the Himalayas to study the trajectory of a comet with a team of researchers. It is a world devoid of electricity and internet, complete with an air of foreboding amplified by mighty mountains and tribals who look at the red trail in the sky with eyes full of alarm. Rich in atmospherics, the narrative takes a spooky spin when Eva (Wamiqa Gabbi), a mysterious woman, joins the father-son duo in their sprawling bungalow.

Nine treads unfamiliar terrains in Malayalam in its ambitious attempt to blend drama, horror, suspense and science fiction, and Jenuse Mohamed succeeds in it to a great extent. The film, despite its loose ends and incongruities, keeps you hooked to its novel and crisp narrative as the director works his way through the permeating sense of the unknown. While Abinandhan Ramanujam's camera effortlessly sweeps you to the vortex of horror and mystery, Sekhar Menon's sound design renders the film its near-perfect tempo. Prithviraj handles the intricacies of his character with utmost poise and Alok is adorable as little Adam. Wamiqa Gabbi delivers what is demanded as she negotiates the creepy twists and turns, never turning it into a bad trade-off.

The only problem with Nine is its hurried climax, a grand revelation that lacks its indispensable crescendo. It required more build up and reel time before it slowly evolved to the point through more intriguing clues and calculations. The film features a highly skippable flashback song sequence, but it loses grit when the most crucial moment of the film arrives. Having said that, Nine is hardly mediocre any respect and the film is definitely a different and refreshing watch.

9: Nine Movie Review: A Sci-fi Film That Comes Into Its Own After It Turns Into A Psychological Thriller

Nine sets off on a very intriguing and exciting thread. A comet is going to pass by planet Earth over a period of nine days. In those nine days, the planet will go into complete darkness, with no electricity or modern technology. How will humans survive such a blackout?

Director Jenuse Mohammed, who made his debut with the Dulquer Salmaan film 100 Days of Love has Albert (Prithviraj), an astrophysicist, as the leading character. Albert is a widower with a young son, Adam. Apart from being a loner, Albert also has a strained relationship with his son. When his boss, Dr. Inayat Khan (Prakash Raj speaking horrifyingly broken Malayalam), offers him an opportunity to write a feature in Time magazine about the comet, Albert agrees and goes to the Himalayas with his son to study the event closely.

The film opens with an aged and bespectacled Prithviraj doling out science lessons to his young son, Albert who eventually grows into the protagonist. His backstory is clearly unimaginative—a wife (Mamta Mohandas, the official cameo queen off late) who dies when in labour, leaving behind a lonely unhappy boy. The initial portions introducing Albert's workplace and colleagues were unusually bland with conversations that read like they were part of a theatre performance and colleagues who seemed to be fans in awe of Albert's every word. There is a bit about his boss Inayat Khan that feels like it came straight out of an old Renji Panicker script.

Prithviraj's Albert is the third fantastically similar character he has played in recent times, after Ranjan Mathew ( Ezra ) and Adam ( Adam Joan ). The brooding loner husband, who battles inner demons that spill over in all his relationships. The core is also the weakest link in the film—the father-son bond that falls flat. What should have been an intense relationship fails to keep us invested emotionally. The writing is so ordinary that there is not a single memorable scene between the two. And the actors seem to be struggling to display the necessary warmth crucial for such an intense bond.

Nine appears to be a sci-fi film on the surface, but with its frames bearing the texture of psychological/horror film, there is enough to feel the chills. This is eventually what works in the narrative, with the elements of horror being downright eerie. The film really picks up pace when the sci-fi gives way to spine-chilling horror. At the large bungalow, small hints of an impending horror trail are let loose—the enigmatic morose old house-help, and a girl (Wamiqa Gabbi) who is brought home by Albert. Gabbi, with her auburn-tinged hair and gentle smile, is scintillating as this mysterious stranger who creates a bond with the little boy.

At some point in the film, we are on our way to figuring out the paranormal activities, but almost every puzzling question is spoonfed to us. Trimming unnecessary elements like that superficial romantic ditty (that would have worked infinitely better as a brief monologue) would have added some pace to the narrative.

Nine succeeds, to an extent, in covering up the writing flaws with superb production value and technology. The VFX, except for that comical fox, is convincing and creative—especially the star-lit dark sky, the reddish comet, and the black, cloudy ghostly invasion.  So was the BGM that effectively gave goosebumps.

The last few portions were uncomfortably like Ezra that also dealt with a similar predicament. Prithviraj, apart from repeating himself, is also causing harm to his films by repeating certain actors and worse, giving them the same old narrative. The talented Rahul Madhav, for instance, looked like he had never left the Adam Joan sets. Either way, the sub-characters were all sketchy. Mamta Mohandas appeared sporadically in black and white gowns and bright pink or red matte lipsticks and failed to evoke any emotion.

Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer Malayalam film ‘Nine’ released this week, co-starring Prakash Raj and Wamiqa Gabbi. The story explores the love-hate relationship of a father and his son bringing in a very unique angle. The film covers science-fiction, horror, suspense, and thriller and engaging family drama genre all at the same time.

The film is set in the backdrop of the global event, which occurs once in several centuries. A huge comet crosses very close to the earth and leaves not just a trail of red streak in the skies but a lot behind it. It leaves darkness in the whole world and unleashes a dark entity. Adam (young Alok), a seven-year-old boy who is the only son of astrophysicist Dr. Albert Lewis (Prithviraj) is being haunted by the entity.

The comet destabilizes the earth’s magnetic field disabling anything modern, including mobile phones, internet, power supply, and even vehicles with spark plugs for the next nine days. Majority of the world including tribals see the dark sky and red trails at the bad omen for the world.

During the nine days period, every soul on earth becomes human again and Albert gets to address the relationship with his seven-year-old son.

The film is written and directed by Jenuse Mohamed and jointly produced by Prithviraj Productions and SPE Films India and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.

This is the first time Sony Pictures has invested in South Industry and it is the debut of Prithviraj Productions. The music for the film is given by Shaan Rahman.

9 MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

The primary conceit of writer-director Januse Mohammed's 9 is about a comet upon entering the atmosphere leads to an electronic/electric shutdown for nine days. This concept has the makings of a wicked satire, but the maker decides to focus on a personal tale of equally intriguing opportunities, like how the obsession of an astrophysicist over the phenomenon leads to ghastly incidents in his household. 

The film follow astrophysicist Albert (played by Prithviraj), embarking on a scientific expedition along with his team of scientists as they entangle themselves in a series of spooky events when Albert chances upon a stranger, Ava during his first viewing of a comet. Accompanying Albert is his son Adam, played by master Alok.

The film starts with Albert's father accompanying him in a lunar eclipse. This scene may come across as inconsequential in due course of the film, but the initial portions ground the fable-like storytelling into reality. The first half invests attention to the minute details that results in much better surprises later, and the world building unfolds in a Shyamalan-esque manner, that is elaborate yet engaging. Hence a major portion of it does not happen at a breakneck speed.

The horror sequences are more thrilling in the second half as the stakes become higher and we begin rooting for them only at that point. The expository dialogue involving the comet in the early sequences are less complex and does not alienate the audience, full credits for the writer. The first half engages us with neatly staged and edited stretches, for instance, the stretch involving the supermarket on the eve of the phenomenon had a sense of a well made social commentary in it.

It is the second half that sucks us into the thrilling events as every setup finds its own resolve, like the burst of a buried landmine. The red herring unveils in front of us and when the deceptions become clear the film creates a race against time kind of situation. The film brilliantly uses light and shade to convey the mood of a situation (the film was shot by Abhinandan Ramanujan), for instance, a happy occasion like a father wishing his son a happy birthday is shot in a dimly lit interior, portraying the dysfunctional relationship between them.

Even the visual effects had a certain amount of believability in them. Wamiqa Gabbi's portrayal of Ava lends an eerie presence to the film and Master Alok is a revelation as Adam, as he conveys the desperation of the character with ease and excels even in the close-up shots, a quality that is found in experienced actors. After Koode, this film makes great use of Prithviraj's earnestness.

One wishes that the director had used more silence for us to be absorbed into the atmosphere of the film and Adam had a lot of scenes in the initial portions (the character of Adam feels a bit underwritten). But minor problems aside, what makes 9 work very well is the fact that the layers of sci-fi and horror are used to tell a story about unfocussed parenting, a universal theme that gives a deeper connection with the film.

പ്രമേയം... 

ഭൂമിയെ കടന്നുപോകുന്ന ഒരു വാൽനക്ഷത്രത്തിന്റെ കാന്തികതരംഗങ്ങൾ കാരണം ഒൻപത് ദിവസത്തേക്ക് ഭൂമിയിലെ ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് സാന്നിധ്യമുള്ള ഉപകരണങ്ങളെല്ലാം നിശ്‌ചലമാകുന്നു. വൈദ്യുതിയില്ല, ഫോണില്ല, ഭൂരിഭാഗം വാഹനങ്ങളും പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നില്ല...ചുരുക്കത്തിൽ ലോകത്തിന്റെ ചലനവേഗം തന്നെ പിടിച്ചുകെട്ടപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇതിനെ കുറിച്ച് ഒരു ഫീച്ചർ തയാറാക്കാനായി ഹിമാലയത്തിലേക്ക് പോകാൻ ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ആൽബർട് നിയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അയാൾ മകൻ ആദത്തെയും കൂടെകൂട്ടുന്നു. അവിടെ അവർക്കുണ്ടാകുന്ന വിചിത്രമായ അനുഭവങ്ങളും അതിന്റെ ചുരുളഴിയുമ്പോൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവുകളുമാണ് സിനിമയുടെ പ്രമേയം. ഒൻപത് ദിവസങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന സംഭവവികാസങ്ങളാണ് സിനിമയിൽ പറയുന്നത്. ഹിമാചൽ പ്രദേശ് പ്രധാന ലൊക്കേഷനാകുന്നു. 

അച്ഛനും മകനും തമ്മിലുള്ള സങ്കീർണമായ ബന്ധമാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ കഥാതന്തു. ചില ദുരനുഭവങ്ങൾ, ഓർമകൾ, കാഴ്ചകൾ മനുഷ്യമനസ്സിനെ  എത്ര വിചിത്രമായി വേട്ടയാടാം എന്നു ചിത്രം കാട്ടിത്തരുന്നു. സ്വയം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു നവീകരിക്കുന്നതാണ് ഭയത്തെയും അന്ധകാരത്തെയും തുടച്ചുനീക്കാനുള്ള വഴി എന്നു ചിത്രം പറഞ്ഞുവയ്ക്കുന്നു. ബാക്കിയെല്ലാം തിയറ്ററിൽ പോയി കണ്ട് അനുഭവിക്കേണ്ട കാര്യങ്ങളാണ്.

ചിത്രത്തിൽ രണ്ട് ഗെറ്റപ്പുകളിലാണ് പൃഥ്വിരാജ് എത്തുന്നത്. പതിവു ഹീറോ പരിവേഷത്തിനപ്പുറം പേടിക്കുന്ന നായകനെ ചിത്രത്തിൽ കാണാം. ഭീതി, നിസ്സഹായത, പക എന്നിവയെല്ലാം മികച്ച മെയ്‌വഴക്കത്തോടെ പൃഥ്വി അഭിനയിച്ചു ഫലിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ചിത്രത്തിലെ സസ്പെൻസിന്റെ ചുരുളഴിയുന്ന രംഗങ്ങൾ പൃഥ്വിരാജിലെ നടനെ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതാണ്. ഗോദ എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെ പ്രേക്ഷകരുടെ ഇഷ്ടം നേടിയ വാമിഖ അവസാനംവരെ ഉദ്വേഗം  നിലനിർത്തുന്ന കഥാപാത്രമായി എത്തുന്നു. പൃഥ്വിയുടെ മകന്റെ വേഷം ചെയ്ത ബാലതാരം അലോക് മികച്ച പ്രകടനം കാഴ്ചവച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

സാങ്കേതികവശങ്ങൾ....

ഒരു റാന്തലിന്റെ പ്രകാശമാണ് നായകനെ പലയിടത്തും മുന്നോട്ടു നയിക്കുന്നത്, ചിലപ്പോഴൊക്കെ പ്രേക്ഷകനെയും. കഥയിലെ ഭീതി അഭ്രപാളിയിൽനിന്നും കാഴ്ചക്കാരിലേക്ക് സന്നിവേശിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിൽ പിന്തുണ നൽകുന്നത് മികച്ച ഛായാഗ്രഹണവും പശ്‌ചാത്തലസംഗീതവുമാണ്. ഫ്ലാഷ്ബാക്ക് പറയുന്ന ഗാനവും മികച്ചുനിൽക്കുന്നു. 

ഡാർക്ക് തീമിനാണു ചിത്രത്തിൽ പ്രാധാന്യം നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ പകുതിയിലേറെ രംഗങ്ങളും അരങ്ങേറുന്നത് മങ്ങിയ പ്രകാശത്തിലാണ്. കലാസംവിധാനവും ഛായാഗ്രഹണവും ഈ വെല്ലുവിളി മനോഹരമായി തരണം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു. വിഎഫ്എക്‌സ് മികച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യപകുതിയിൽ വാൽനക്ഷത്രം എത്തുമ്പോൾ ഭൂമി ഇരുട്ടിലാകുന്ന ഒരു രംഗമുണ്ട്. അതുമാത്രം മതി, മലയാളസിനിമ ഏതു ലെവലിൽ എത്തിയെന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കാം.

രത്നച്ചുരുക്കം...

100 ഡെയ്‌സ് ഓഫ് ലൗ എന്ന റൊമാന്റിക് ചിത്രത്തിന് ശേഷം ജനൂസ് മുഹമ്മദ് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന നയന്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് സോണി പിക്‌ചേഴ്‌സും പൃഥ്വിരാജ് പ്രൊഡക്ഷന്‍സും ചേര്‍ന്നാണ്. മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് അധികം പരിചയമില്ലാത്ത ഒരു കഥാപരിസരമാണ് ചിത്രത്തിനായി ജനൂസ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചത്. ആസ്‌ട്രോ ഫിസിക്‌സ്റ്റായ ആല്‍ബര്‍ട്ടും അയാളുടെ മകന്‍ ആദമുമാണ് ചിത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍. ലോകം ഭയത്തോടെ നോക്കിക്കാണുന്ന ഒരു ശാസ്ത്ര പ്രതിഭാസത്തിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തില്‍ അച്ഛനും മകനും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധത്തിന്റെ കഥ പറയുകാണ് ജനൂസ് മുഹമ്മദ്.

150 വര്‍ഷം മുമ്പ് ഭൂമി അഭിമുഖീകരിച്ച ഒരപൂര്‍വ്വ പ്രതിഭാസം വീണ്ടും സംഭവിക്കുകയാണ്. ആകാശത്തിന്റെ ഒരു കോണിലെ ഒരു ഗാലക്‌സിയില്‍ നിന്നും ഒരു ഉള്‍ക്ക താഴേക്ക് പതിക്കുകയാണ്. ഭൂമിയുടെ സമീപത്തൂടെ കടന്ന് പോകുന്ന ഈ ഉള്‍ക്കയുടെ കാന്തിക വലയം ഭൂമിയിലെ കാന്തീക തരംഗങ്ങളേയും വൈദ്യുത തരംഗങ്ങളയേും നിഷ്പ്രഭമാക്കും. ഇതിന്റെ കാന്തിക വലയത്തില്‍ നിന്നും പുറത്ത് കടക്കാന്‍ ഒന്‍പത് ദിവസങ്ങളെടുക്കും. ഈ ഒന്‍പത് ദിവസങ്ങളെ ഒരു ദുശകുനമായി കാണുന്ന ഒരു വിഭാഗം നമ്മുടെ രാജ്യത്തുണ്ട്. ഹിമായലത്തില്‍ താമസിക്കുന്ന ആദിവാസി വിഭാഗമാണവര്‍. ഈ പ്രതിഭാസത്തെ വിശ്വാസവുമായി കൂട്ടിവായിക്കുന്നവരാണവര്‍. അവരേക്കുറിച്ചും ഈ പ്രതിഭാസത്തേക്കുറിച്ചും അടുത്തറിയാന്‍ ആല്‍ബര്‍ട്ടും സംഘവും യാത്ര തിരിക്കുന്നു. മകനേയും അയാള്‍ ഒപ്പം കൂട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്നാല്‍ അവിടെയെത്തുന്ന ആദമിനേയും ആല്‍ബര്‍ട്ടിനേയും കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത് അപ്രതീക്ഷിത സംഭവങ്ങളാണ്.

ആല്‍ബര്‍ട്ടിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്ത് അവന്റെ അച്ഛനായിരുന്നു. അവനെ ശാസ്ത്രത്തോട് അടുപ്പിച്ചത് അച്ഛനായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ആല്‍ബര്‍ട്ടിന് വഴികാട്ടിയും സുഹൃത്തുമായി മാറിയ അച്ഛനേപ്പോലെ സ്വന്തം മകനെ അടുത്തറിയാനും ആല്‍ബര്‍ട്ടിന് സാധിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല എന്നതൊരു വസ്തുതയാണ്. ആല്‍ബര്‍ട്ടിലെ അച്ഛനെ പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ക്ക് അടുത്ത് പരിചയമുണ്ടാകും. ഒരുപക്ഷെ പലര്‍ക്കും തങ്ങളില്‍ ആല്‍ബര്‍ട്ടിനെ ദര്‍ശിക്കാനുമാകും. ശാസ്ത്രത്തേയും വിശ്വാസത്തേയും ഇഴചേര്‍ത്തുകൊണ്ട് അച്ഛന്‍ മകന്‍ ബന്ധത്തിന്റെ കഥ പറയുകയാണ് ജനൂസിലെ രചയിതാവും സംവിധായകനും.

ആദ്യ 30 മിനിറ്റില്‍ ചിത്രത്തിലെ ശാസ്ത്ര പശ്ചാത്തലത്തെ പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ക്ക് ഗ്രഹിക്കാനാകുന്ന വിധം വിശദമായി വിവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് സംവിധായകന്‍. മുഷിപ്പുളവാക്കാത്ത വിധം കഥയെ ആദ്യ 30 മിനിറ്റ് മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നതില്‍ അഭനന്ദ് രാമാനുജന്‍ ഒരുക്കിയ ഫ്രെയിമുകള്‍ക്ക് സാധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ചിത്രത്തിലെ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത് ഷാന്‍ റഹ്മാനാണ്. അതേസമയം ചിത്രത്തിലെ ത്രില്ലിംഗ് എലമെന്റിനെ നിലനിര്‍ത്തുന്ന തരത്തില്‍ പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതം ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത് ശേഖര്‍ മേനോനാണ്. ആസ്വാദകനെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുന്നതില്‍ ഛായാഗ്രഹണത്തിനും പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതത്തിനുമുള്ള പ്രാധാന്യം വളരെ വലുതാണ്.

നിര്‍മാതാവെന്ന നിലയിലൂള്ള പൃഥ്വിരാജിന്റെ ആദ്യ സ്വതന്ത്ര പരീക്ഷണമാണ് നയന്‍. നിര്‍മാതാവെന്ന നിലയില്‍ മാത്രമല്ല നടനെന്ന നിലയിലും പൃഥ്വിരാജിന് നയന്‍ മുതല്‍ക്കൂട്ടാകും. പൃഥ്വാരാജിനൊപ്പം ചിത്രത്തില്‍ എടുത്ത് പറയേണ്ട പ്രകടനം ആദമായി എത്തിയ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ അലോകിന്റേതാണ്. ഗോദയിലൂടെ പ്രേക്ഷകരുടെ മനം കവര്‍ന്ന വമിഖ ഗബ്ബിയുടെ മികവുറ്റ പ്രകടനം കൊണ്ട് ഇവ എന്ന കഥാപാത്രവും തിയറ്റര്‍ വിട്ടിറങ്ങുന്ന പ്രേക്ഷകന്റെ മനസിലൂണ്ടാകും. ത്രില്ലര്‍ ചിത്രമെന്ന നിലയില്‍ ഈ ചിത്രത്തെ സമീപിക്കുന്ന പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ നിരാശരാകില്ല.

ഒരു വീട്ടില്‍ ഒരു രാത്രിയില്‍ നടക്കുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങളും, കുറച്ച കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും മാത്രമുള്ള ചിത്രത്തില്‍ എന്നാല്‍ ചിരിക്ക് ഒരു കുറവും ഇല്ല.

ജോ ർജുകുട്ടി കെയർ ഓഫ് ജോർജുകുട്ടി, ഇന്ദ്രപ്രസ്ഥം, ഊട്ടി പട്ടണം, കിന്നരിപ്പുഴയോരം തുടങ്ങിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലൂടെ മലയാളിക്ക് സുപരിചിതനായ സംവിധായകനാണ് ഹരിദാസ്. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനൊപ്പം തീയറ്ററുകള്‍ ചിരി അരങ്ങുകളാക്കി പല സിനിമയുടെ സംവിധായകനായ റാഫിയും ചേര്‍ന്നാല്‍ എന്താണോ പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ സ്ക്രീനില്‍ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് അത് നല്‍കുന്നതാണ് 'താനാരാ' എന്ന ചിത്രം.

ഒരു വീട്ടില്‍ ഒരു രാത്രിയില്‍ നടക്കുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങളും, കുറച്ച കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും മാത്രമുള്ള ചിത്രത്തില്‍ എന്നാല്‍ ചിരിക്ക് ഒരു കുറവും ഇല്ല. മലയാളത്തില്‍ എന്നും വിജയിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള കണ്‍ഫ്യൂഷന്‍ കോമഡിയുടെ ട്രാക്ക് പിടിച്ചാണ് പടത്തിന്‍റെ പോക്ക്. അതിനാല്‍ തന്നെ വളരെ രസകരമായ ഒരു കഥാനന്തുവില്‍ മുഴുകി നിറചിരിയോടെ പ്രേക്ഷകന് ചിത്രം ആസ്വദിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയും. 

സത്യസന്ധനായ കള്ളനാണ് തങ്കച്ചന്‍. തനിക്ക് ഒരു വീട്ടില്‍ നിന്നും ആവശ്യമായ പണം ഒരു ബുക്കില്‍ കണക്ക് കൂട്ടി വച്ച് അത് മാത്രം കളവിന് കയറുന്ന വീട്ടില്‍ നിന്നും എടുക്കുന്ന സത്യസന്ധന്‍. 'സത്യസന്ധനായ കള്ളന്‍' എന്നതില്‍പ്പോലും ഒരു ചിരി ഒളിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് അണിയറക്കാര്‍. അങ്ങനെ ഒരു ദിനം തങ്കച്ചന്‍ എത്തുന്നത് എംഎല്‍എ ആദര്‍ശ് ശ്രീവരാഹത്തിന്‍റെ ഫാം ഹൗസിലാണ്. എംഎല്‍എ ദില്ലിയില്‍ പോയി എന്ന ധാരണയിലാണ് തങ്കച്ചന്‍ എത്തുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ അവിടെ നടക്കുന്നത് അപ്രതീക്ഷിത സംഭവങ്ങളാണ്.

In the latest development to come out of the Malayalam cinema industry scandal, actor Minu Muneer made sexual harassment allegations against fellow actors M Mukesh, Jayasurya, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Idavela Babu, on Tuesday. And a case was registered against director Ranjith following the complaint lodged by Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra alleging inappropriate behaviour on Monday.

The news comes days after a redacted version of the Justice Hema Committee report on harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry was made public, on August 19.

The outcry has been a long time coming. The Justice Hema Committee report was submitted to the Kerala government in December 2019 and made public only this month.

Here’s what we know about the Malayalam cinema industry scandal:

The seed of doubt

The most shocking incident that led to the creation of the Justice Hema Committee was in 2017, when well-known star Bhavana Menon, who had worked in more than 80 movies, was assaulted by the group of men travelling from Thrissur to Kochi.

While the incident made news headlines, what stunned fans of the film fraternity was the implication of leading actor Dileep in the menacing encounter. Even though he denied the charges, he was incarcerated for three months before being released on bail. (The case is still in court).

Months after the attack, women in the industry formed the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), petitioning the government to address the issues faced by women in the South Indian movie industry, also known as Mollywood. And so the Hema Committee was formed in November 2017.

Findings of the investigation

BBC reports that the committee found evidence of foul play, stating that retired Justice K Hema says the WCC told her that “women are being silenced as the prestige of the film industry needs to be upheld”.

The report stated that “the industry is controlled by a group of male actors, producers, distributors, exhibitors and directors who have gained enormous fame and wealth”, adding that these big-wigs were among the perpetrators.

The committee also found that women are denied basic human rights such as access to toilets and changing rooms, even on sets. Women often have to find secluded spots to change or use the bathroom during outdoor shoots, with no access to water or basic facilities.

“The experiences of many women are really shocking and of such gravity that they have not disclosed the details even to their close family members,” it said.

The group interviewed actors and actresses and also producers, directors, scriptwriters, cinematographers, hairstylists, make-up artists and costume designers.

What happened next?

The report, submitted in 2019, was only released on August 19 when it created ripples of shock across the country.

The 235-page report, published after redacting the names of witnesses and the accused, notes that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by between 10 and 15 male producers, directors, and actors.

After Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra accused Ranjith of mishaviour in 2019, he resigned as Kerala Chalachitra Academy Chairman on Sunday.

And IGP & Commissioner of Police S. Syamsundar told ANI on Monday, "Received a complaint from the victim in the abuse case regarding Director Ranjith. A crime in the north police station has been registered under section 354 and the investigation will be as per the mandate to be decided by the special investigation team constituted by the government for the same."

Another investigation team is formed

It was as though a dam had broken with many women coming forward to talk about their own experiences. On Sunday, as pressure mounted, the Kerala government said it would be forming a special investigation team, led by a senior police officer, to probe the allegations of sexual abuse in the Malayalam film industry.

"In light of recent interviews and statements from several women in the Malayalam film industry detailing the hardships they have faced, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan convened a meeting with senior police officials here on Sunday," said an official release from the Chief Minister's Office.

Vijayan said that if any of those who testified before the Hema Commission come forward with complaints, appropriate action will be taken.

"No matter how high-ranking, everyone will be held accountable before the law," he said.

Who has spoken out so far and what have they said?

Sreelekha Mitra accuses director Ranjith of assault

Sreelekha Mitra accused Ranjith of misbehaving with her back in 2009. In an email sent to the Kochi City Police Commissioner, she detailed an incident when she was in Kochi for discussions about a role in the movie Palerimanikkam , which Ranjith was directing.

Mitra claimed that during the discussion, Ranjith "clutched" her hand.

"I was invited to act in a film Palerimanikkam directed by Ranjith. As part of [the] discussion, I was called to the flat in which Sri Ranjith was staying at Kaloor Kadavanthra, Kochi. During the course of discussion, he [took] hold of my hand and later on attempted to spread his hand to other parts of my body with sexual intention. Realising that his intentions are not [focussed on] the discussion regarding the film and with sexual intent, I had to escape from the flat and returned to the hotel where I was staying. My bitter experience was shared on the next day to a scriptwriter Sri Joshy Joseph. As I was not given the travelling ticket for my return journey, I was compelled to seek the help of Sri Joshy Joseph," the actress wrote in her complaint.

She added: "As a person hailing from Kolkatha, West Bengal, I was unable to pursue this matter any further to prosecute Sri Ranjith for the offence attracting section 354 & 354 B of the Indian Penal Code at the time of commission of crime."

Mitra also requested the Kochi Police to treat her email as a formal complaint.

Revathy Sampath calls out actor Siddique

Actress Revathy Sampath publicly accused prominent Malayalam actor Siddique, who also serves as the general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), of sexual misconduct, reported ANI.

She told the Indian news agency: "I got in contact with actor Siddique during my 10+2 time. He used to message me from an account that looked fake and he was in contact with me for two years and used to address me as 'daughter'. He got to know that I am interested in acting and he is a criminal and he must have planned everything.”

She said during a meeting under the pretence of discussing a film opportunity, Siddique's behaviour allegedly became aggressive.

"Everything looked professional at first...after some discussion, all of a sudden his conversation turned sexual and by the time I realised it was a trap, the door was locked...I was helpless and I was scared," she said.

Sampath said Siddique physically assaulted her and allegedly threatened to damage her career if she spoke out about the incident.

Siddique, meanwhile, has also lodged a complaint with Kerala Police against Sampath, officials said on Monday.

"The complaint has been submitted to Director General of Police," was quoted as saying by an official.

Minu Muneer accuses co-stars of harassment, verbal abuse

Actor Minu Muneer made sexual harassment allegations against fellow actors M Mukesh, Jayasurya, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Idavela Babu, on Tuesday, telling ANI they subjected her to verbal and physical abuse in the process of filming movies.

In a conversation with ANI, she spoke about her experiences, difficulties and tribulations, and being denied roles and being described as "worthless".

"Once, as I was coming out from the toilet, Jayasurya hugged me from behind and even kissed me forcefully... After that, Idavela Babu expressed his interest in a sexual relationship with me," she alleged.

Minu said in a Facebook post: "I am now seeking justice and accountability for the trauma and suffering I endured. I request your assistance in taking action against for their heinous actions.”

Footage Movie Review: A technically sleek film that's refreshing despite the roadblocks

Right from the beginning of 2024, Malayalam cinema has been exploring new territories in both form and content. Starting with the National Award-winning  Aattam  in January, the following months witnessed several successful and bold attempts, including films like  Bramayugam, Manjummel Boys,  and  Gaganachari . The latest addition to join this bandwagon of innovative endeavours is  Footage , the directorial debut of seasoned editor Saiju Sreedharan. This film marks Malayalam cinema’s first mainstream venture into the niche genre of found footage.

Director: Saiju Sreedharan Cast: Manju Warrier, Vishak Nair, Gayathri Ashok Footage  opens with the legendary Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez's line on compartmentalising our lives: "All human beings have three lives: public, private, and secret." The film follows a vibrant and inquisitive vlogger couple, played by Vishak Nair and Gayathri Ashok, who document almost every aspect of their daily lives, including their intimate moments. The story spans a year between 2020 and 2021 when the world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it touches on the topic of loneliness caused by the lockdowns and restricted movement, it barely delves into the harsh realities of the time—and rightly so. The entire film, presented as pieces of evidence of a crime, unfolds through the couple's camera footage. While the first hour is shown from the boy’s perspective, the latter is seen through the girl’s camera.

True to its promotional materials, which indicate that it is intended only for adults, the film’s first shot is an explicit lovemaking scene featuring a random couple that is captured in broad daylight from one of the buildings opposite their residence. This establishes Vishak and Gayathri's characters as people who would not think twice before invading other people's privacy. They live on their own terms in a seemingly beautiful love nest of an apartment. The only apparent poster on their wall is of Kamala Surayya, popularly known by her pen name Madhavikutty, whose unconventional existence starkly contrasted with the times she lived in. The protagonists, who remain unnamed throughout the film, are driven by a relentless curiosity, documenting anything that piques their interest. In what feels like a homage to  The Blair Witch Project  (1999), one of the most popular found footage films, the couple also explore urban legends in their leisure time to present their limited YouTube subscribers. Unlike the genre's convention of incorporating supernatural elements,  Footage  steers towards a rational narrative refreshingly.

That being said, like many other films in the genre,  Footage  also stumbles in terms of its writing, as the narrative is told solely from a first-person viewpoint. Even though Saiju and Shabna Mohammed's screenplay makes an effort to overcome this roadblock by warming up the audience to the lead characters' idiosyncratic psyche as a couple, the moments showcasing their unconditional love often fall short, due to their stagey tête-à-tête. Vishak and Gayathri try their best to make the couple believable with their chemistry in the characters' implicit moments, adorned by the band aswekeepsearching's beautifully understated soundtrack. The actors also do a fine job with the voice work, conveying their characters' tension through gasping breaths as they find themselves in a predicament. Footage  works best during the first hour as the couple begins investigating Manju Warrier's character, a mysterious doctor possibly scarred by her past, as Gayathri's character expresses during one of her inorganic and angsty rants against society. The intrigue and tension created by Saiju's excellent mood-building in these portions exemplify his craft as a filmmaker to look out for. Shinoz's cinematography and Nixon George's sound design also contribute to making  Footage  a technically sleek film, notwithstanding the inevitable shaky camera movements. Watch out for a brilliantly choreographed fight sequence, shot upside down as a static wide shot inside a forest, right before the interval between Manju and one of the lead actors where the film peaks.

However, the film starts overstaying its welcome in the second hour as we delve deeper into the couple's lives until they find themselves in this predicament involving Manju's character. Even at just over two hours, the film ends up feeling stretched beyond its threshold, as the second hour adds little that is creative. The portions involving a housemaid, who works at both Manju's and the couple's houses, only contribute to deterring the film's pace. Even the conclusion or the payoff surrounding Manju's character—thankfully not abrupt—lacks imagination, prompting the question, 'That's it?' Despite these shortcomings, Manju, playing a role without a single line of dialogue, does a commendable job employing her eyes alone to express her character's unstated anger within her limited scope in the narrative. Her agility, too, is a force to be reckoned with.
