M.Phil. Admissions 2021-22

In keeping with the regulations of the University of Delhi, applications can be submitted only via the  University of Delhi M.Phil./Ph.D. Admissions Portal .

Eligibility Requirements

Admission is open to those who have obtained a Master’s degree in Sociology or an allied subject from a recognised Indian University, and have a good academic record with a first or high second class Master’s degree, or have an equivalent degree of a Foreign University in the subject concerned. (Note: High second class would mean at least 55% in the subject or equivalent grade).

The candidates belonging to the categories under reservation shall have appropriate relaxation in the minimum marks requirement in the eligibility criterion for admission to M.Phil./Ph.D. Programmes.

Applicants must have completed 17 years of formal education, namely 10+2+3 scheme or its equivalent for graduation and 2 years of post-graduation.

Exemptions and other Requirements

All candidates for the M.Phil Program are required to take the DUET exam (see below). Exemption from the entrance exam is applicable only to those who have qualified UGC-NET in Sociology. However, submission of research proposal and appearing for the interview are mandatory for all.

Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET) for Ph.d./M.Phil

The Combined PhD-M.Phil DUET is a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) test. Please check the University of Delhi Bulletin of Information for Admission to PhD-MPhil Programmes, for eligibility and exemptions from the test.

The test will evaluate logical, analytical and interpretive abilities and sociological understanding and comprehension. Familiarity with the MA sociology syllabus is desirable but not necessary.

The format for DUET 2021-2022 is exactly the same as in previous years. The total number of questions is 50. The duration is two hours.

Research Proposal

Research proposals* must be approximately 1000 words and contain the following:

  • Your proposed theme of research/questions you will be addressing
  • What are the major writings in the field on this subject
  • Bibliography

*The MPhil is a one-year program which includes coursework and dissertation writing. The dissertation is usually based on secondary sources and is intended to build up a theoretical basis for further research.

Eligibility Criteria

A.  Qualifying Examinations

  The criteria for qualifying examination for each of the M.Phil and Ph.D. Program is given in Annexure-VI : Eligibility conditions for admission to M.Phil. Program and Annexure-VII : Eligibility conditions for admission to Ph.D. Program respectively.

B.  Equivalence Criteria

The Departments/Centres of the University may ask the candidates concerned, wherever necessary, to get recognition/equivalence of their degrees/ diplomas/ certificates authenticated from the Association of Indian Universities/University Grants Commission/AICTE/Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE) on his/her own for the purpose of admission in the Department/Centre. Further, the cases of equivalence of degrees / certificates / diploma may then be put up before the University Authorities for further consideration and confirmation. However, the Certificates / Diplomas/ Degrees already recognized/equated by the University may not be referred for furtherverification.

As part of the application for admission onto our MS, MPhil and PhD programmes, you must prepare a research proposal outlining your proposed area of study. A research proposal is a concise and coherent summary of your proposed research. It sets out the central issues or questions that you intend to address. It outlines the general area of study within which your research falls, referring to the current state of knowledge and any recent debates on the topic. It also demonstrates the originality of your proposed research. The proposal is the most important document that you submit as part of the application process. It gives you an opportunity to demonstrate that you have the aptitude for graduate level research, for example, by demonstrating that you have the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, concisely and critically. The proposal also helps us to match your research interest with an appropriate supervisor. What is your research proposal used for and why is it important? It is used to establish whether there is expertise to support your proposed area of research It forms part of the assessment of your application The research proposal you submit as part of your application is just the starting point, as your ideas evolve your proposed research is likely to change
