Thesis Topics
You are invited to pursue any topic that falls under the English department’s purview, and the Honors Committee will assume that you will pursue it with scholarly rigor, intellectual seriousness, and artistic integrity. You should follow your own interests and commitments in defining your project, though you should avail yourself of the advice of those faculty members whose expertise will help you focus your ideas and give them depth. Again, we welcome critical, creative, interdisciplinary, mixed genre, and hybrid creative/critical projects. Most successful applicants have derived their projects from interests developed during their time as English majors at Georgetown. During the actual writing of the thesis, of course, you will work closely with a faculty mentor.
Here is a partial list of the kinds of literary and interdisciplinary topics that Honors students have pursued over the past few years:
- Polyphony in the novels of Cormac McCarthy
- Women in post-Stonewall gay male literature
- Madness and skepticism in Hamlet and Don Quixote
- Dialogism in Toni Morrison and Christa Woolf
- The Booker Prize as post-colonial phenomenon
- Jazz in the Harlem Renaissance
- The scientific revolution and 18th-century narratives
- Irvine Welsh and dialect writing
- Sound and structure in scripts
- Identity and memory in Maxine Hong Kingston
- Influence of the internet on writing
- The written legacy of oral narratives in Amerindian culture
- Medieval women troubadours
- African-American women writers and their Biblical heritage
- Adult-child discourse in real-life conversation and classic children’s literature
- The role of bible-making in the works of Blake, Wordsworth, and Hardy
- Morality plays in the Middle Ages and the twentieth century
In addition, Honors students have written short story collections, memoirs, and collections of poetry. Students have also written hybrid creative/critical projects, such as a critique of postcolonial memoir within a postcolonial memoir. Those students who propose creative projects should have developed their skills through taking courses with the Georgetown English Department creative writing faculty or through participation in campus and professional journals and other creative venues.

When you’re faced with writing up a thesis, choosing a title can often fall to the bottom of the priority list. After all, it’s only a few words. How hard can it be?!
In the grand scheme of things I agree that picking your thesis title shouldn’t warrant that much thought, however my own choice is one of the few regrets I have from my PhD . I therefore think there is value in spending some time considering the options available.
In this post I’ll guide you through how to write your own thesis title and share real-world examples. Although my focus is on the PhD thesis, I’ve also included plenty of thesis title examples for bachelor’s and master’s research projects too.
Hopefully by the end of the post you’ll feel ready to start crafting your own!
Why your thesis title is at least somewhat important
It sounds obvious but your thesis title is the first, and often only, interaction people will have with your thesis. For instance, hiring managers for jobs that you may wish to apply for in the future. Therefore you want to give a good sense of what your research involved from the title.
Many people will list the title of their thesis on their CV, at least for a while after graduating. All of the example titles I’ve shared below came from my repository of academic CVs . I’d say roughly 30% of all the academics on that page list their thesis title, which includes academics all the way up to full professor.
Your thesis title could therefore feature on your CV for your whole career, so it is probably worth a bit of thought!
My suggestions for choosing a good thesis title
- Make it descriptive of the research so it’s immediately obvious what it is about! Most universities will publish student theses online ( here’s mine! ) and they’re indexed so can be found via Google Scholar etc. Therefore give your thesis a descriptive title so that interested researchers can find it in the future.
- Don’t get lost in the detail . You want a descriptive title but avoid overly lengthy descriptions of experiments. Unless a certain analytical technique etc was central to your research, I’d suggest by default* to avoid having it in your title. Including certain techniques will make your title, and therefore research, look overly dated, which isn’t ideal for potential job applications after you graduate.
- The title should tie together the chapters of your thesis. A well-phrased title can do a good job of summarising the overall story of your thesis. Think about each of your research chapters and ensure that the title makes sense for each of them.
- Be strategic . Certain parts of your work you want to emphasise? Consider making them more prominent in your title. For instance, if you know you want to pivot to a slightly different research area or career path after your PhD, there may be alternative phrasings which describe your work just as well but could be better understood by those in the field you’re moving into. I utilised this a bit in my own title which we’ll come onto shortly.
- Do your own thing. Having just laid out some suggestions, do make sure you’re personally happy with the title. You get a lot of freedom to choose your title, so use it however you fancy. For example, I’ve known people to use puns in their title, so if that’s what you’re into don’t feel overly constrained.
*This doesn’t always hold true and certainly don’t take my advice if 1) listing something in your title could be a strategic move 2) you love the technique so much that you’re desperate to include it!

Why I regret my own choice of PhD thesis title
I should say from the outset that I assembled my thesis in quite a short space of time compared to most people. So I didn’t really spend particularly long on any one section, including the title.
However, my main supervisor even spelled out for me that once the title was submitted to the university it would be permanent. In other words: think wisely about your title.
What I started with
Initially I drafted the title as something like: Three dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration . Which I thought was nice, catchy and descriptive.
I decided to go for “correlative imaging” because, not only did it describe the experiments well, but it also sounded kind of technical and fitting of a potential pivot into AI. I’m pleased with that bit of the title.
What I ended up with
Before submitting the title to the university (required ahead of the viva), I asked my supervisors for their thoughts.
One of my well intentioned supervisors suggested that, given that my project didn’t involve verifying regenerative quality, I probably shouldn’t state cartilage regeneration . Instead, they suggested, I should state what I was experimenting on (the materials) rather than the overall goal of the research (aid cartilage regeneration efforts).
With this advice I dialled back my choice of wording and the thesis title I went with was:
Three dimensional correlative imaging for measurement of strain in cartilage and cartilage replacement materials
Reading it back now I’m reminder about how less I like it than my initial idea!
I put up basically no resistance to the supervisor’s choice, even though the title sounds so much more boring in my opinion. I just didn’t think much of it at the time. Furthermore, most of my PhD was actually in a technique which is four dimensional (looking at a series of 3D scans over time, hence 4D) which would have sounded way more sciency and fitting of a PhD.
What I wish I’d gone with
If I had the choice again, I’d have gone with:
Four-dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration
Which, would you believe it, is exactly what it states on my CV…
Does the thesis title really matter?
In all honesty, your choice of thesis title isn’t that important. If you come to regret it, as I do, it’s not the end of the world. There are much more important things in life to worry about.
If you decide at a later stage that you don’t like it you can always describe it in a way that you prefer. For instance, in my CV I describe my PhD as I’d have liked the title to be. I make no claim that it’s actually the title so consider it a bit of creative license.
Given that as your career progresses you may not even refer back to your thesis much, it’s really not worth stressing over. However, if you’re yet to finalise your thesis title I do still think it is worth a bit of thought and hopefully this article has provided some insights into how to choose a good thesis title.
My advice for developing a thesis title
- Draft the title early. Drafting it early can help give clarity for the overall message of your research. For instance, while you’re assembling the rest of your thesis you can check that the title encompasses the research chapters you’re included, and likewise that the research experiments you’re including fall within what the title describes. Drafting it early also gives more time you to think it over. As with everything: having a first draft is really important to iterate on.
- Look at some example titles . Such as those featured above!
- If you’re not sure about your title, ask a few other people what they think . But remember that you have the final say!
I hope this post has been useful for those of you are finalising your thesis and need to decide on a thesis title. If you’ve enjoyed this article and would like to hear about future content (and gain access to my free resource library!) you can subscribe for free here:

English Language Dissertation Topics
English students are bright and highly creative. This means they tend to come up with brilliant ideas!
So, coming up with a dissertation topic should be easy, right?
Well, not necessarily.
Coming up with a topic can be stressful so you might try to avoid it. Alternatively, you might have hundreds of great ideas, but not know which one to settle on.
If that’s the case, then don’t worry. This article is here to help you move forward with choosing a topic for your dissertation – so let’s get started!
Sociolinguistics Dissertation Topics
Coming up with a topic, applied linguistics dissertation topics.
- Critical Perspectives for Language Students
Sociolinguistics is one of the most interesting aspects of English studies, especially in our modern, globalised world. Put simply, sociolinguistics is concerned with how social/cultural norms shape language. Since we are becoming increasingly globalised, there is a debate as to whether our culture and language systems are converging or diverging. Of course, there is no straightforward answer to this debate, and there is still much to learn about the link between society, culture, and language. Here are a few dissertation topics in sociolinguistics to get you started.
- Mapping the diachronic development of Disney Princesses: How is language used to portray femininity?
- ‘Well jel’!’ A sociolinguistic analysis of The Only Way is Essex.
- Are accents still being used to create alterity? A review of blockbuster films from 2019-2020. ‘
- Mapping second-generation immigrants’ usage of English within the family: When and Why?
- Politeness and official address (e.g., Sir, Madam, Teacher): A comparison between the UK and China.
- How do employees use and lose power in workplace meetings? A sociolinguistic analysis.
- Do males speak more frequently than females? A review of university seminars.
- Hedges in everyday speech: Why are we so uncertain?
- A sociolinguistic analysis of advertising for vegan products.
- A diachronic sociolinguistic analysis of cosmetics reviews 1950 – 2020.
- Polite participles in everyday speech: Is it a class thing?
- Building rapport via video conferencing: How does it differ from real-life?
- Analysing humour between native and non-native English speakers: How is it manifested?
- The language of love: universal or locally specific?
- A sociolinguistic analysis of comic book villains.
- The diachronic evolution of questioning.
Coming up with your own topic is no easy feat. Above all, it’s important to find a topic that interests you!
If you are an overseas student, you might find it interesting to compare language between the UK and your own country, for example.
So, let’s say you’re from China…
Research from Kaplan (1966) shows that native English speakers prefer to use deductive forms of discourse, whereas Chinese EFL speakers prefer inductive forms of discourse.
However, this research is quite out of date, and since many Chinese people have become English language learners since 1966 (and many now live in the UK), you might question whether this difference still persists…
And there you have it! A curious ‘gap’ in the literature that you can fill with your dissertation.
Need help coming up with a great dissertation topic? Our expert writers are on hand to assist.
The field of language and linguistics is sometimes accused of being a bit ‘abstract’. But, in truth, linguistics can be applied to the real world, and these applications hold a great degree of significance, not only for language learning but for wider society. That said, if you’re a practical and solutions-focused person, you might enjoy working on an applied linguistics dissertation. Here are a few titles to inspire you:
- Children’s adoption of intensifying adverbs: How early should it be encouraged?
- Becoming a non-native teacher of English: Key challenges and opportunities.
- Delivering safety training to non-native English speakers – How to test comprehension?

You won't receive marginal comments or corrections to these versions of the thesis. Once the thesis is graded you'll receive a formal written report from your advisor and reader.
You are also required to submit an electronic copy as a PDF file to Mudd Library no later than Dean's Date, May 7, 2024. The link to upload your PDF copy to Mudd is: https://rbsc.princeton.edu/policies/senior-thesis-submission-information-students .
Pequod and The UPS Store printing and binding instructions can be found here.
If you are planning to conduct interviews for your thesis, please make your interview subjects aware that your thesis will be available to the public after it has been completed and deposited in the Mudd Library. There are Interview Permission forms in the English office.
Length: (60-75 pages).
Margins: 1-1.5 inches on all sides. We recommend a wider margin (not to exceed 1.5") on your left side, to accommodate binding.
Font: For everything (body, notes, quotes, etc.), a 12-point font should be used (Times, Times New Roman, Helvetica, Courier are all standard). Titles may be underlined or italicized.
Single sided
Double-space: All text; inset quotations and footnotes may be single-spaced.
Page numbers: Pages must be numbered; place the numbers where you like.
Style: Capitalization, hyphenation, and other points of usage should follow the guidelines in EITHER Kate Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations , 8th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2013), OR the MLA Handbook, 8th ed. (MLA, 2016). The MLA style guide is summarized here: style.mla.org. You should use one style or the other, not a mixture of the two.
Title page:
A senior thesis submitted to the Department of English in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts
Princeton University Princeton, New Jersey Date
Acknowledgments: This page, thanking friends, family, teachers, mentors, advisors, librarians and libraries, etc. may follow your title page.
Table of Contents: List chapter titles, appendices, bibliography, with starting page number.
Pledge: The pledge must be typed and signed. It may be on a separate sheet, placed at the beginning or end of your thesis. “I pledge my honor that this senior thesis has been written in accordance with University regulations.”
Footnotes/Endnotes: You may use footnotes, chapter endnotes, or endnotes to the whole. All independent work submitted to the English Department must follow Chicago OR MLA style for notes and bibliography. You can find the Chicago rules in Kate Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations , 8th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2013). A minimal guide to Chicago style is to be found at the Turabian website . You can find the MLA rules in the MLA Handbook, 8th ed., or at https://style.mla.org/ .
The department recommends that students use parenthetical citations for frequently cited texts, per Turabian (16.4.3.2). That means that if you are writing about Middlemarch , the first citation will be a footnote or endnote as follows:
1George Eliot, Middlemarch (Penguin: Harmondsworth, 2003), 102. Subsequent citations will be given in parentheses in the text.
Thereafter, as long as it is clear what text you are quoting, you can simply give the page number in parentheses in the body of the text after the quotation, as follows:
“I have always been in favor of a little theory’ (17).
The same goes for act, scene, and line numbers for plays, and line numbers for poems. See Turabian for further details, including proper punctuation around note numbers or parenthetical citations.
Bibliography: a complete bibliography or list of citations, in Chicago or MLA style, should follow your text. Again, consult Turabian or the MLA Handbook for format.
Quotations & Citations: All quotations over three or four lines in length and all poetry over three lines should be quoted as an indented block; with no quotation marks, unless these are internal. For other guidelines see Turabian or the MLA Handbook . Particularly valuable is the discussion of “Incorporating Quotations into Your Text” (25.2).
Documentation and attribution of credit: All material which is quoted directly from or paraphrased from any external source, whether published or unpublished, must be precisely credited and documented. General indebtedness to an idea, a line of argument, an image, particularly compelling wording, and so forth must be noted. For example: as Critic X has argued . . .; The argument in this paragraph follows the reading presented by Critic Y . . .; in a pertinent discussion, Critic Z suggests that . . .; One influential reading, put forth by Critic M, argues that . . .

170 Original Thesis Topics and Ideas For Your Winning Paper
![list of thesis title for english majors thesis topics](https://thesisrush.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/thesis-topics.jpg)
Throughout your college and graduate school career, you will be required to write hundreds of academic papers across myriad subjects. Choosing good thesis topics is just one of the major factors necessary to achieve academic excellence. This article does not tell you how to write a good thesis but focuses on the process of developing great senior thesis topics that are challenging yet don’t leave you feeling overwhelmed.
- How to Develop and Choose Great Thesis Paper Topics?
Computer Science Thesis Topics
Psychology thesis topics, art history thesis topics, sociology thesis topics, economics thesis topics, psychology dissertation topics, architecture thesis topics, criminal justice thesis topics, philosophy thesis topics, history thesis topics, ms thesis topics, where you can find thesis writing help for your topics.
Our list of 170 free thesis statement topics is broken into 12 of the most popular subjects. These are only suggestions and you’re certainly encouraged to modify them as you deem appropriate. Keep in mind that good dissertation topics should aim to push the envelope of academic research while answering important scholarly questions within the field. Don’t feel constrained by what these thesis topics attempt to explore – what inspires your curiosity is the most important aspect of writing a thesis that warrants readership and appreciation.
How to Develop and Choose Great Thesis Topics?
Your thesis statement should be interesting.
You’ve likely heard over and over that the best master thesis topics should always be on something interesting – but does not take this to mean that it only applies to what a reader thinks is interesting. You should genuinely be curious about the topic you want to explore. This will invariably lead to more effective research, writing, and presentation of the chosen topic.
Make Sure You Can Find Enough Resources
Time is limited, and so too are resources. If your topic is too narrow you may not have access to all the resources you need to adequately answer the questions you seek. Ask the resource librarian for some dissertation topic examples to get a sense of the number of resources you will need to include in the bibliography and then triple that number. This is the average amount of research materials you will need to locate in your study.
Meet with Your Advisor to Discuss Options
Finally, you will need to meet with your academic advisor throughout the process of finishing your capstone project, so you will benefit from meeting with him or her as you consider your topics to discuss options. If, for instance, you are going over art history thesis topics , an advisor can point you to previous studies, research, resources, and more. You may find early that your topic may not be doable – and save yourself time by choosing altogether different.

Senior Honors Thesis
English majors may apply to write a Senior Honors Thesis, which is a two-semester critical or creative project involving an advanced level of work in an area that students have already studied as part of their major. The thesis is guided by a faculty advisor and a second reader, both of whom should be full-time members in the English Department. The application process is different for critical and creative writing projects, so read below for specific instructions. Once the proposal is approved by the English Department, students register for ENG 0199A (Fall) and ENG 0199B (Spring), both 4 credit courses that also include a required year-long senior thesis workshop.
Please note that students cannot register for the Fall honors thesis course until a proposal has been approved by the English Department. Potential thesis writers should begin the proposal submission process early in the Spring semester of their junior year.
Qualifications
By Tufts policy, application to write a thesis is limited to students whose names have appeared on the Dean’s List at least twice before their senior year. Transfer students should have appeared on the Dean’s List at least once at Tufts. See “thesis types” for additional creative writing thesis prerequisites.
Thesis Types
- Critical Writing: The critical writing thesis is a substantial piece of work (generally between 35 and 60 double spaced pages) that demonstrates the student’s ability to develop and sustain a coherent and comprehensive critical argument. Students are expected to have done prior course work or other research in the proposed field, to demonstrate their ability to sustain an extended independent project, and to present a detailed and seriously thought-out proposal. Questions of organization, format, and length are determined in consultation with the faculty thesis advisor.
- Creative Writing: The creative writing thesis can be either a unified set of works of varying lengths (poems, short stories, creative nonfiction essays, etc.) or a single creative work (minimum 80 double spaced pages). Students must have taken at least two courses in the relevant genre, one of them at the advanced level, if applicable, which means fiction writers must have taken Writing Fiction: Advanced-ENG 0013 (and received a grade of A or A-) and poets must have taken Writing Poetry: Advanced-ENG 0016 (and received a grade of A or A-).
Thesis Advisors
Thesis advisors and second readers must be full-time faculty in the English Department and are usually (though not always) professors with whom the student has already completed coursework in the area to be covered in the honors thesis. See the current list of full-time faculty members .
- Critical Writing: Students interested in doing a critical thesis are expected to confer with potential thesis advisor(s) about their projects well in advance, normally by the start of the Spring term of their junior year . Once a faculty member has agreed to serve as thesis advisor, the student consults with them in developing a proposal to be submitted for approval to the English Department [[email protected]] by the last day of classes during the Spring term of their junior year.
- Creative Writing: Students interested in doing a creative writing thesis are required to submit a proposal and writing sample to the English Department Office [[email protected]] by April 1 st of their junior year, as described below and consolidated in this handout . A committee of faculty will review the applications and select proposals to go forward to submit to the Department for official approval. Students will be informed of the results by mid-April and at this stage will also be matched with a thesis advisor, who will work with them to refine their proposal before submitting to the Department by the last day of classes during the Spring term of their junior year .
Once the proposal (both critical and creative) is approved by the Department, the student will have permission to register for ENG 0199A. At the start of Fall semester, they will determine a writing and meeting schedule and identify a second reader in consultation with the thesis advisor (if they have not already done so). The second reader should also be a full-time faculty member of the English Department except under extraordinary circumstances, in which case approval of the Department Chair should be sought as early in the Fall semester as possible.
Written Proposal
After consulting with the potential advisor (or, for creative projects, the Director of Creative Writing), students who intend to undertake an honors thesis are expected to produce a written proposal during the Spring term of their junior year to submit for final approval by the English Department by the last day of classes of Spring term.
- Critical Thesis Proposal: The proposal for a critical writing thesis should be two to three pages (double spaced). It should present an overview of the topic, outline the specific questions to be explored, discuss the method of investigation or analysis, and describe the organization of the thesis by section or chapter. It should also include a short preliminary bibliography of works (both primary and secondary) that the thesis will engage.
Creative Thesis Proposal: Though it is understood that creative projects will evolve during the writing process, the proposal for a creative thesis should act as a point of entry for the writing to be done. In one to two pages (double spaced), it should set out the genre/sub-genres the project will undertake (e.g. novella, story collection, poetry collection, memoir, long-form journalism, hybrid, etc.) and provide a sense of the project, including, when relevant, the premise, driving questions/themes, structures/forms, plot/characters, and influences. It should also name 1 or 2 preferred thesis advisors from the full-time English Department faculty .
In addition, along with the proposal, students should submit a writing sample in their intended genre, as follows: for poetry, 3-5 poems; for fiction/creative non-fiction/journalism/hybrid, 5-10 pages (double spaced).
Required Thesis Workshop
All students doing senior honors theses are required to attend the Senior Thesis Workshop that accompanies registration for the Senior Honors Thesis. There will be 3-4 meetings of the Workshop scheduled and facilitated by the English Department Senior Honors Thesis Coordinator each term, including a Thesis Presentation event that will be held in April before the annual English Major Celebration .
Senior Honors Thesis Registration
The senior honors thesis is a year-long course for which students need permission to register for the Fall semester. Once the thesis proposal has been approved by the English Department in May, students will be able to register for ENG 0199A for Fall and ENG 0199B for Spring by selecting the faculty member who is serving as the thesis advisor from the drop down list available on SIS. In addition, students must submit the following two forms:
- In consultation with your faculty advisor, complete and submit a signed " Senior Honors Thesis Form " to the English Department Office [[email protected]] within a week of receiving notification that the project has been approved. Students are encouraged to keep a copy of this form.
- Complete the online Senior Honors Thesis Candidate Declaration Form .
Course Credits
- A Senior Honors Thesis counts for a total of two 4-credit courses, one for each semester registered.
- One course of a Senior Honors Thesis may count as one of the five elective courses required for the English Major. The second course of a Senior Honors Thesis is additional to the ten courses required for the English Major.
Thesis Defense
The Senior Honors Thesis culminates in a thesis defense conversation, which is an hour-long discussion and critique of the thesis work with the thesis advisor and second reader. After the defense, the two faculty readers determine a letter grade and the level of honors to be awarded.
Students are expected to hand in final versions of their theses at least two weeks before their defense date. The defense usually takes place at the end of the Spring term, or at the latest by the last day of reading period.
Archiving Manuscripts
After the defense and after making any necessary corrections, students should submit a final, corrected copy of their completed senior honors thesis to the Digital Collection and Archives (DCA) at Tufts either in digital form or as a hard copy. Deposit Form for the Tufts Digital Library . Students are encouraged to provide a printed copy of their thesis to the English Department.
Fulfilling Major Requirements
One course of the Senior Honors Thesis can count as one among the five elective courses required for the ten course English Major. The second course of the Senior Honors Thesis is additional to the ten course English Major, making a total of eleven courses for those students doing the Senior Honors Thesis. Students can complete the other requirements for the English Major while working on their Senior Honors Thesis.

The title page of your thesis or dissertation should include your name, department, institution, degree program, and submission date.
Usually, no title page is needed in an MLA paper . A header is generally included at the top of the first page instead. The exceptions are when:
- Your instructor requires one, or
- Your paper is a group project
In those cases, you should use a title page instead of a header, listing the same information but on a separate page.
The title page of your thesis or dissertation goes first, before all other content or lists that you may choose to include.
In most styles, the title page is used purely to provide information and doesn’t include any images. Ask your supervisor if you are allowed to include an image on the title page before doing so. If you do decide to include one, make sure to check whether you need permission from the creator of the image.
Include a note directly beneath the image acknowledging where it comes from, beginning with the word “ Note .” (italicized and followed by a period). Include a citation and copyright attribution . Don’t title, number, or label the image as a figure , since it doesn’t appear in your main text.

![list of thesis title for english majors Profile image of Carmina Elizscha Busacay](https://a.academia-assets.com/images/s65_no_pic.png)
Abstract Theses and dissertations take a resounding part in catering the needs of the learners in education. To be fully aware of the topics chosen is one of the eminent pointer to remember when conducting a research. This qualitative descriptive research reviewed the frequently investigated topics of the theses and dissertations of masters and doctoral students who were specializing in the field of language education in the graduate program of the School of Teacher Education, Saint Louis University (STE - SLU). The researches were treated according to the five (5) macro skills in the English language. It was found out that of the five (5) macro skills, speaking is the frequently investigated topic from 2011-2014 followed by reading, writing, listening, and viewing. It is then a challenge for the researchers to explore on the other areas of the macro skills especially viewing since there are no studies conducted yet in this skill. Keywords: macro skills, listening, speaking, viewing, writing, reading, language education

This study aimed to determine the performance of the grade 7 learners in five macro communication skills in English language learning at Cotabato City National High School-Main. Campus. Specifically, it determined their performance in listening focused on stress and intonation, speaking focused on correct production of vowel and consonant sounds and pitch levels, reading focused on comprehension and use of appropriate reading style, writing focused on writing purposes and sequencing sentences, and viewing focused on identifying meaning of signs and symbols and use of structural analysis. Finally, it determined the skills they performed best and worst. Thus, the subjects of this study were the 728 grade 7 students of CCNHS-Main Campus in the school year 2022-2023. Their performance in five macro communication skills were measured. The researcher used a quantitative descriptive design particularly teacher-made test in listening, speaking, reading, viewing and writing. The test questionnaire was based on the K-12 Curriculum Guide competencies which consisted of 50 test items for the five macro communication skills and divided it into 10 test items in each skill. Furthermore, after conducting the test, the results were analyzed and interpreted and came up with an output which is intervention materials in macro communication skills in English (listening, speaking, reading and writing). The intervention materials aims to help the grade 7 students in improving their communication skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. The findings revealed the following: the performance level of the grade 7 students in listening, speaking, and reading are all described as "did not meet expectations"; the grade 7 learners' performance in viewing skill is found to be in the "very satisfactory" level; in writing skill, the grade 7 learners' performance level is described as "fairly satisfactory"; their performance level in five macro communication skills is described as "fairly satisfactory"; and the learners perform best in viewing while they perform worst in reading. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the grade 7 learners are good viewers but they have very poor performance level in terms of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The following recommendations are offered based on the findings and conclusion: the language teachers should utilize different strategies and activities to help improve students' deficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing; there is a need for students to involve actively in interactive activities in school or watch English tutorial videos in speaking and listening to enhance their listening and speaking skills, likewise, they may also engage in writing tasks to eventually overcome their deficiency in writing and they may expose themselves in different reading texts or books in order to improve their reading comprehension level; the school administrators should provide opportunities for the students to develop and to enhance their communication skills through different events conducted inside and outside the school such as seminar-workshops, trainings, and academic festivals or contests; the intervention materials constructed as an output should be used by the language teachers to remediate learners' learning gaps; language teachers should integrate viewing English programs activity to enhance the students' speaking skill; the Department of Education and school administrators should intensify monitoring the efficient implementation of reading programs under DepEd and see to it that all schools implement it, teachers need to implement the reading program religiously; and future researchers may conduct further study about the students' English communication skills using different setting and respondents to validate the results of the study.

The efficacy of macro-linguistics in developing reading skills
Korkut Uluç İşisağ
Studies regarding reading skills have been carried out for a long time. However, the bond between linguistics and foreign language teaching, especially reading skills, has been frequently overlooked. Thus, this study which aims to emphasize the importance and need of linguistics offers an alternative way of dealing with reading texts. In this context, after reviewing the literature about some major fields of macro-linguistics such as, pragmatics, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics briefly, a relationship is established between the interdisciplinary areas listed above and foreign language teaching, mainly reading skills. The study is intended to help foreign language teachers to enrich their teaching reading experiences via keeping the core fields of macro-linguistics in mind. Thus, as an implication, an integrated lesson plan is developed in the study to demonstrate the efficacy of macro-linguistics in developing reading skills. Based upon the observations conducted, aforementioned plan highlights that the students are kept aware and motivated, reflect their experiences, have ideas about the register and intralingual and interlingual vernaculars of the language displayed in the text. The data is collected through student observations, performances and samples of their works. The results of the study indicated that foreign language students' comprehension levels of a reading text could be increased with the realization of macro-linguistics.
