Resume Genius is as easy as a resume builder gets.

First, the builder guides you through a series of multiple-choice questions about your education and experience. This leaves only a few blanks for you to fill in with dates, roles, and other straightforward answers.

We especially like the “Add Pre-Written Bullet Points” feature. This time-saving tool allows you to select from a vast selection of pre-written bullet points that match your specific industry or job role.

This feature is an excellent way to streamline the resume-building process and to ensure that job responsibilities are written with precision and clarity.

When you’ve completed your resume, you’ll be directed to a pricing page that may seem to suggest that the most affordable option is a 14-day trial of Resume Genius for just $2.95, followed by a monthly subscription charge of $24.95.

But there’s an alternate option that requires no credit card information.

Simply click on this link , then log in again, and you’ll be taken to a page where you can see your saved resume. You can download it for free as a .txt file, which is a basic document that removes formatting.

This is an excellent option for those seeking a budget-friendly and hassle-free solution to their resume-building needs.

  • User-friendly resume builder offers multiple-choice questions.
  • Option to add pre-written bullet points can save time.
  • Allows you to download your resume for free as a .txt file.
  • Limited customization options compared to some other resume builders.
  • The .txt format lacks visual appeal.
  • No free option to download a PDF or Word doc.

Best Resume Advice According to Reddit: 6 Tips That Actually Work

  • Julia Mlcuchova ,
  • Updated January 29, 2024 9 min read

Do you often turn to Reddit for answers to your burning questions? And, have you considered exploring this popular online forum to uncover what the best resume advice according to Reddit is?

Of course, Reddit can be notoriously difficult to navigate and not all of its users actually know what they're talking about.

Still, Reddit and other public forums can be valuable sources of first-hand experience in all things resume.

We've painstakingly sifted through countless subreddits, all dedicated to resume writing and career tips, to save you the trouble.

Now, we present to you the crème-de-la-crème of Reddit resume advice.

In this article, you'll find:

  • 6 best resume advice according to Reddit;
  • What we think about them;
  • And, of course, examples.

TL;DR: 5 Best resume advice according to reddit

1. use a single column layout to pass the ats.

  • 2. Don't name your resume 'resume.pdf'

3. Keep your job descriptions short. Use bullet points and action verbs

4. use numbers to quantify your achievements, 5. less is more for both word count & job applications per day, 6. use resume builders to make your life easier, key takeaways: best resume advice according to reddit.

First, for those in a hurry, here's the TL;DR version of our top five resume advice gathered from Reddit:

  • Use a single column layout to pass the ATS.
  • Don't name your resume 'resume.pdf'.
  • Keep you job descriptions short. Use bullet points and action verbs.
  • Use numbers to quantify your achievements.
  • Less is more for both word count & job applications per day.
  • Use resume builders to make your life easier.

Now, let's look at the best resume advice according to Reddit users more closely. Here's what we think:

If you thought that layout doesn't play any significant role in the success rate of your resume, you thought wrong!

In case the company you're applying to uses an Applicant Tracking System, always opt for a single column layout .

The reason? ATS compatibility.

Even though all ATSs are designed to read text from top to bottom, left to right , not every ATS is programmed to distinguish between columns.

And you just can't know with certainty which software you'll encounter. Therefore, reduce the risk of your resume being incorrectly processed or rejected by picking a one-column ATS friendly resume template . This will make the process of parsing and interpreting information easier and safer.

HOWEVER. That doesn't mean you should discard the two-column resume all-together. Here are some reasons why a two-column layout can still be beneficial :

  • Non-ATS employers . Many companies still don't use ATS systems, making the ATS compatibility argument less relevant in these cases. For these employers, the visual and organizational benefits of a two-column layout could be more advantageous.
  • Aesthetics . A two-column format can be more visually engaging, making your resume stand out.
  • Ease of reading . Smaller chunks of information can make the resume easier for the human eye to navigate.
  • Space management . For those with less experience, a two-column layout can help evenly distribute text and avoid large empty spaces.
  • Strategic organization . It allows for a more strategic presentation of information, guiding the recruiter's eyes through your resume efficiently.

Moreover, if you're just entering the workforce with no experience , your resume is probably still quite sparse.

Because of this, you may end up with a large, unattractive empty space at the bottom of your document. And with one-column structure resumes, this is often the case.

There' s an easy fix! Organizing your resume sections into a two-column structure can help spread the text more evenly.

2. Don't name your resume 'resume.pdf'

Indeed, putting together a good resume is quite a tedious process.

There're so many rules and principles to think about, for instance:

  • Every single resume section, whether it be the resume summary , work experience section, education section, skills section, or any other optional section, requires your full and undivided attention.
  • You must remember to always tailor your resume to fit a specific job description .
  • Not to mention the subsequent formatting and proofreading!

By the time you've finished writing your resume, you're likely mentally drained.

It's at this time that errors creep out from the most unexpected places.

One such error is not naming your resume file appropriately .

How to name your resume file: step-by-step.

When naming your resume file for submission, it's important to consider clarity, professionalism, and the likelihood of it being easily found by the recruiters.

Here are our recommendations for naming your resume file:

  • Use your name. Start with your full name. This is the most crucial piece of information because it clearly identifies the document as yours. For example, "PeterStones" .
  • Specify the document type. Make it clear that the document is a resume . This helps distinguish your resume from other documents like a cover letter . For example, " Resume ".
  • Add the job title. This can be particularly helpful if you are sending the resume directly to a hiring manager. For example, " ProductManager ".
  • Use a professional format. Avoid using any unnecessary symbols or fancy formatting. Underscores (_) or hyphens (-) are acceptable to separate words.

A good file name for your resume could look like this: "PeterStones_Resume_ProductManager.pdf".

Finally, before hitting send, consider carefully what to write in an email when sending a resume . Of course, when you're applying for a job, every detail matters. Don't neglect the content of your email – it's also responsible for making a positive first impression.

Undoubtedly, you know that the work experience section is the heart and soul of your resume.

The recruiters always pay it the most attention, and so you need to be extra diligent and patient while writing about your past employment.

Consequently, many will try to fit in as much information as humanly possible, disregarding the readability and quality of their entries. To steer clear from such mistake, follow these two simple principles:

  • Organize your work descriptions into bullet points . Under each work experience entry, list 4-5 bullet points underlining your most notable responsibilities and achievements. That is to say, you should focus on demonstrating the impact your presence had on your former employment, rather than just stating your daily duties.
  • Open the said bullet points with action verbs . The recruiters don't care about long winding sentences! That's why it's a good idea to start each bullet point with an action verb . This will not only make your writing more concise, but it'll also depict you as a proactive, and therefore valuable, employee.

For example, a well conceptualized work entry description can look like this:

Work experience entry example:

Senior Product Manager XYZ Tech Solutions, New York, NY | June 2019 – Present

  • Led a team of 8 in the development of an innovative mobile application, increasing user retention by 35% within six months.
  • Collaborated with cross-departmental teams to streamline product delivery, reducing time-to-market by 20%.
  • Managed product lifecycle from concept to launch, including market analysis, positioning, and rollout strategy.
  • Oversaw a budget of $1M, optimizing resource allocation and cutting costs by 15% without impacting product quality.

This is another great resume advice according to a Reddit user!

The recruiters adore to see numbers in your resume! Why, you ask?

It makes life a bit easier for them. By quantifying your accomplishments, you simultaneously allow recruiters to better gauge your abilities ; and add more weight to your words .

Be as specific as you can - numbers are universal.

Struggling to figure out how to incorporate numbers into your resume? Here are few examples of what you can quantify:

  • Revenue and sales increases. If you contributed to growing revenue or sales, specify the percentage or dollar amount of the increase. For example: " Boosted sales by 20% within a six-month period. "
  • Cost reduction. Similarly, if you implemented strategies that reduced costs, mention the amount or percentage saved. For example: " Cut operational costs by 15% through process optimization ."
  • Time efficiency. If you streamlined processes, indicate how much time was saved. For example: " Reduced project turnaround time by 30% ."
  • Team management. If you manage a team, you can specify the number of people you supervise. For example: " Led a team of 12 sales professionals ."
  • Project scope and delivery. Quantify the size or value of the projects you managed, then mention if you delivered them under budget or ahead of schedule. For example:  " Managed projects worth $2M, consistently delivering 10% under budget ."
  • Training and development. If you were involved in training, mention the number of people you trained or the improvement in performance post-training. For example: " Trained over 30 employees, leading to a 40% increase in overall team efficiency. "

Resume advice two-in-one!

As this Reddit user rightly pointed out, less is sometimes more .

This is especially true when it comes to the content of your resume as well as the amount of job applications you send out each day .

When crafting your resume, keep in mind that you must show the recruiters that you have everything they're looking for . Chances are, you actually have much more – more diverse job experience; more interesting hobbies; or more fulfilling volunteer work you'd like to share with them.

Obviously, resumes have their length limitations . Once you've started to write yours, you'll soon learn that you have to be picky!

Recruiters prefer resumes that are focused, relevant, and straight-to-the-point. In other words, don't make them read information they didn't ask for.

The same applies to applying for jobs.

Many in this situation start panic-applying to every single job posting they find. Because they assume that the more applications they send, the bigger their chances at landing a job will be.

Makes sense right?

In theory, maybe. In practice? Hardly!

Believe it or not, there's such a thing as sending too many applications. Basically, if your solely focus on the quantity of applications, you're running the risk of sacrificing their quality .

And that is a problem. If you'd like to learn how to go about this problem, including tips on how to manage the pressure of job hunting, take a look at what research says about the ideal number of job applications .

Now, hand over your heart!

Would you prefer to sit in front of your computer for hours, battling with Microsoft Word and its many settings? Trying to create a perfect resume design from scratch?

Admit it, even the thought of setting margins and spacing makes you roll your eyes.

Hence, arguably the best resume advice according to reddit is to make a resume with an online resume builder to avoid these inconveniences (politely said).

No need to scratch your head over a layout or the best colour palette! Instead, simply pick a resume template that best suits your needs (both aesthetic and practical), fill in all your information, and watch your resume come to life in seconds.

Additionally, resume builders can proofread and correct any misspellings or typos you might've otherwise missed.

Sounds good? If so, your perfect resume is one click away.

Plus, you should always compare your findings with reputable sources. Which is exactly what we did.

Zety offers all the tools you need to build a resume that will catch an employer’s attention. In addition to their online resume builder, they give you access to over 20 resume templates, writing tips, pre-written examples, a cover letter builder, templates for your cover letters, and more.

Once you select one of their resume templates, you can choose to start a resume from scratch or build off of an existing document (Zety will reformat it for you).

You’ll find Zety and LiveCareer’s resume builders are virtually identical (they seem to be built on the same platform), and they have all the same features and download options. Zety also has the same payment structure, where to download multiple resumes or gain access to their more advanced tool options, you’ll need to purchase a premium subscription.

5. USA Jobs

USA Jobs provides the best resume builder software when applying for government jobs.

Their online resume builder is geared toward the exact application process and requirements of the typical government role.

(And those requirements are quite overwhelming if you haven’t applied to many government jobs in the past, so it’s fantastic that their software helps.)

You’ll need to set up an account with USA Jobs to get started, but it’s well worth it.

After joining, follow these steps to start creating a resume for government jobs:

  • Sign into your account.
  • Go to your Documents.
  • Click “Upload” if you want to edit an existing resume or “Build Resume” if you want to create a new one.

From here, you can add text to the various sections of your resume (work experience, previous job title, education, references, etc.). There’s also a section where you can add additional information, like job training, languages, and affiliations. Once you finish your resume you’ll be able to access it in your documents list and can use it to apply to various government positions.

The big difference between USA Jobs’s resume builder and other similar tools is the amount of information it asks you to include. For example, federal government recruiters review, audit, and score a wide variety of information, and this builder ensures you don’t omit anything that the recruiters require for you to be considered.

I found out about this tool through a colleague on LinkedIn, and here’s how they explained it:

USA jobs - best resume builder software for government jobs

So, if you’re applying to any government jobs, this is THE resume builder to use .

6. My Perfect Resume

My Perfect Resume offers free resume builder software and over 30 proven resume templates to help you get started. They also provide a resume optimizer, cover letter builder, cover letter templates, and several different customization options to help you land your dream job.

This resume builder uses the same platform as LiveCareer and Zety. You start by indicating how long you’ve been working and based on that My Perfect Resume will recommend a few templates for you. Then they’ll walk you through each section so you can fill in the correct information. They’ll offer suggestions along the way and will even write your bullets for you if you wish.

Once you’ve completed the process you can download your resume as a PDF, Word document, or plain text file. To enjoy unlimited downloads in Word or PDF, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid account. There is no free trial, but a 14-day full access for $2.95. After two weeks, the subscription auto-renews at $23.95 billed every 4 weeks, unless you cancel it.

7. Resume.com

Resume.com is a completely free resume builder. They also offer information on how to write an effective cover letter, career advice for job seekers, and more.

Their resume builder is simple to use:

  • Enter the type of job you want to apply for.
  • Choose a resume template. Resume.com offers 15 different templates.
  • Click on each section of the template to edit it. Tips are provided for each section to help you craft the perfect resume.
  • When you’re finished, you can choose to print or download your resume as a PDF or text file.

In addition to resume building, Resume.com partnered with Indeed. You’ll use a single account for both platforms. By creating a resume, you agree to create a public resume on Indeed and to receive job opportunities from employers. However, you can change this at any point.

JobScan is known mainly for its flagship software that allows you to match your resume up to the job description before applying (also known as tailoring a resume ).

However, they recently launched a free resume builder that’s among one of the best we’ve seen. It features great resume templates and design options, and it also offers writing guides, cover letter templates, and more.

I’d certainly put this among the free best resume-making sites available right now.

Once you begin, their resume builder gives you the option of building a resume from scratch or editing an existing file. You can even download your LinkedIn profile as a PDF and parse it as an “existing resume.”

If you choose to create a new resume you’ll start by picking one of the three resume templates they have to offer. Then you’ll simply fill in the required information for each section of the resume. Additionally, unlike other resume builders, Jobscan offers 15 Google Docs resume templates, designed by their team.

JobScan provides labeled fields for all the details you need to provide for every section, and a number of these fields are required to ensure you don’t miss anything.

If you already have a resume you’re reasonably happy with you can upload it to the resume builder and JobScan will reformat it and fill in your information based on what’s provided in your resume.

Once you’re done building your professional resume you’ll have the option to scan it based on the job you’re applying for.

JobScan will give your resume a grade ( match rate score) that’s judged on several factors, including skills match, education match, ATS tips, keywords, word count, and more. Based on these results, you’ll be able to build a resume that’s perfectly suited to the job you’re applying for.

9. Kickresume

Kickresume is one of the best resume builders I was able to find while researching. You’ll have to create an account before using it, however, this process only takes a moment.

Once you’re inside the resume builder you have the option of starting a resume from scratch, importing your resume from your LinkedIn profile, using one of their example resumes, or creating a new resume with AI.

Click on the different sections and fill in the fields to make your resume. You can also add and remove sections to personalize the document.

Click “Customization” along the left-hand side to change the colors, format, font, and template. There’s also an option to have it proofread by a professional, although there is a charge for this service.

When you’re happy with your resume, click “Download” to export it as a PDF file or Word doc, email it to yourself, or save it to Dropbox.

Kickresume also has a premium option. The free option should be good enough for most, as it allows you to build unlimited resumes and gives you access to plenty of resume examples and pre-written phrases for you to use.

But if you want access to all the resume templates and tools you might want to consider the premium option. You can choose a monthly, quarterly, or yearly plan. While they don’t have a free trial they do offer a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Indeed is known mostly as a job search tool to find employment opportunities in your local area. However, the company also offers a free resume builder to help job seekers perfect their resume before applying for postings.

Once you choose one of their eight different templates you’re taken to the resume builder where you can edit the document. You can switch templates at any time, adjust the color scheme, and add or remove sections. Once you’re satisfied with what you created about can download your resume as a PDF file.

While there are better resume builders out there, if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to create a resume, this one is a good choice.

Caution: Before Using ANY Online Resume Builder

There’s one more piece of information you should know before acting on ANY of the online resume builder reviews above.

In my experience, too many job seekers focus on an eye-catching resume design when applying for jobs or emailing recruiters , but they don’t put enough focus on writing great content and information that will appeal to the reader. So no matter which of these top 10 resume builders you choose, focus mostly on the text and information you add, not the design.

In fact, I still recommend a single-column layout.

And the truth is, if I were creating my own resume today, I’d use a regular Word template, not any online software or tool.

I discussed this with a colleague on LinkedIn here:

resume building websites vs writing your own resume

Microsoft Office has good templates available , and Hloom is another good site for templates.

I can understand if you don’t want to tinker with resume formatting , spacing, etc., and everything that comes with creating it in a Word doc, but that’s what I’d personally do.

Just keep this in mind when choosing any drag-and-drop software above; you should always pick a design that lets you focus on the content and info because that’s what employers want to see. Don’t choose a format that doesn’t give much space to describe your recent work, accomplishments, etc.

Because the FIRST place I look as a recruiter is your work history, under your one or two most recent roles.

I’d also never recommend a resume layout that doesn’t begin with your employment history on the top half of page 1.

Employment experience is often the first thing hiring managers look for (unless you’re an entry-level job seeker), and you should never make them scroll far down the page (or look on page 2) to find it.

Conclusion: Choosing the Best Online Resume Site for You

There isn’t one single best resume builder for all people in all industries, but the 10 choices above provide good, basic options that are user-friendly and will impress hiring managers.

I recommend visiting a few of the sites above and seeing which builder and templates look best to you. Each site offers different features/options, so you’ll want to get a sense of which one feels best to you before creating and downloading a resume.

And if you read my “Caution” statement above and decide to build your own resume in a document rather than in an online app, I have many free resources to help you here.

The 6 Best Resume Review Services (plus which to AVOID)

man on laptop working on his resume

Are you looking for a professional to review your resume? We've created a shortlist of the best resume review services available online in 2024.

W hether you're looking for an expert resume coach to get you interviews at highly competitive companies, or you want more affordable resume help, you'll find what you need.

These are the best resume review services available right now:

#1 IGotAnOffer (Best if you're applying to highly competitive companies) #2 R/resume thread on Reddit (Best place for a free resume review) #3 TopResume (Best for including an ATS check) #4 The Muse (Best for new grads) #5 LinkedIn Resume Coaches (Best for accommodating broad range of industries) #6 MentorCruise (Best if you're looking for long-term mentoring)

We'll explain more about each one below, and we'll also reveal which resume services you should steer clear of.

Okay, let's get into it.

Click here to get 1-to-1 expert feedback on your resume from an ex-recruiter or interviewer

1. What is a resume review?

A resume review service enables you to get your resume looked over by a resume professional. They will offer you detailed suggestions on how you can improve it and better tailor it to the jobs you're applying for.

A professional resume review will usually include the following:

  • Suggestions to help you quantify your achievements
  • Advice on what areas /skills/achievements to focus more /less on
  • Suggestions on how to optimize for your target role or company
  • Ideas on how you can stand out if you're in a very competitive field
  • Corrections on spelling or grammar mistakes
  • How to improve formatting, style, and tone.
  • Advice on making your resume the right length
  • Applicant tracking system (ATS) keyword and formatting compatibility

With some resume review services, you upload your resume to their site and then receive written feedback on your resume usually within a few hours. Many of these are free, as the hope is that you'll then buy a resume-writing package.

However, there are some resume review services where you get your resume feedback in person, as part of a 1-hour feedback session. This allows for a deeper, two-way conversation about what you want to achieve with the resume and how to do it.

1.1 Resume Review vs. Resume Writing

Many people don't understand the difference between these services, and a Google search for term each brings almost identical results. It shouldn't, because resume review services and resume writing services serve distinct needs:

Resume Review Services: These focus on evaluating and enhancing your existing resume. With a resume review service, you submit your self-crafted resume, and the experts provide detailed feedback, suggesting improvements to fine-tune your document for success.

Resume Writing Services:   You provide them with your career history, accomplishments, and any relevant information, and they create a resume from scratch for you. These services are for people who want a professional-looking resume without the hassle of doing it themselves. As you'd expect, this comes with a higher cost - for a quality result you'll need to pay upwards of $500. For more budget services, expect a more generic end result that is less accurately tailored to your needs.

You'll need to make your own decision, but we believe that a resume review is usually a better option, for the following reasons:

  • as you're also putting some work in, it's a less expensive route to a strong resume
  • you end up with a resume that is 100% unique
  • you actually learn how to create a strong resume, so next time you won't need help

If you're still set on a resume writing service, then our recommendation would be Executive Drafts , as they have a lot of positive reviews on Reddit and other platforms, and have reasonable pricing options (we have no affiliation).

2. How much do resume review services cost?

The price of resume services can vary significantly, depending on the type of service you choose and the level of expertise you're looking for. Here's a breakdown of the typical costs you can expect:

Resume Review Services: These services, which focus on evaluating and improving your existing resume, are often the more budget-friendly option. Prices range from $0 to  ~$550, as you'll see in the list below. The price generally reflects the expertise of the person reviewing your resume, the time they spend on it, and how much two-way feedback is offered.

Resume Writing Services: If you opt for a resume writing service, where professionals create a new resume from scratch, the cost tends to be higher. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $1000, depending on the complexity of your career history and the expertise of the writer.

Additional Services: Some resume service providers offer add-on services, such as cover letter writing, LinkedIn profile optimization , or job interview coaching. These extras can increase the overall cost but may provide valuable support in your job search.

For a more detailed look at resume service prices see " Resume service costs: price comparison table ".

Okay, let's take a look at the best resume review services around right now.

3. Six best resume review services in 2023

One surprising thing we discovered is that there aren't actually that many good resume review services available. The resume market seems to be completely dominated by resume writing services, which have their place but, as mentioned above, serve a different need.

To find good resume review services you'll have to sift through a lot of resume writing services, and it can be hard to get lost in the noise. That's why we created this list.

Let's take a look.

#1. IGotAnOffer (Best if you're applying to top companies or competitive roles)

Igotanoffer resume review service

Pricing : $149 for a 1-hour resume review session. Format: 1-to-1 video call Reviews: 5.0 on Google , 4.96 rating on own site. Reviewer expertise: All resume coaches have been recruiters/interviewers at top companies (Google, McKinsey, etc) Satisfaction guarantee: 100% refund if you're not satisfied.

On IGotAnOffer you can book a 1h resume review session with resume coaches who have worked as recruiters or interviewers at top companies. It specializes in Tech, Consulting, or Finance, so if you're targeting a role in one of these industries, it's exactly what you need.

You can search by company, role, specialty, timezone, etc, and book a timeslot that suits you. There are well over 100 resume coaches on the platform, all vetted and highly qualified, so plenty to choose from.

Of course, $149 is still a significant investment so if you're going for a lower-paid or non-competitive role, you might prefer to try options 2 or 3 below.

#2. R/resume thread on Reddit (Best place for a free resume review)

Reddit resume page

Pricing : Free Format: online forum Reviews: not applicable Reviewer expertise: Varies Satisfaction guarantee: not applicable

It's technically not a resume "service". But if you want to get some different opinions on your resume without spending money, this resumes page on Reddit is a very useful place to go. Post it there (you may want to anonymize it first) and after a day or so you should have a few comments giving you ideas on how to improve it.

Of course, it's hard to tell if the people commenting really know what they're talking about, and sometimes the criticism could do with a bit more sugar-coating (!), but hey, it's free. Plus, you can gain a few tips and insights by browsing other people's resumes and the comments on those.

#3. TopResume (Best for including an ATS checker)

TopResume website

Pricing : Free Format: Emailed feedback Reviews: 4.1 on TrustPilot Reviewer expertise: Low Satisfaction guarantee: not applicable

As part of my research for this article, I tried some of the free resume review sites that seemed to be frequently recommended: ExecutiveDraft , TopResume , and Resume Worded .

While ResumeWorded uses 100% AI to give you an instant rating with feedback that is too generic to be very useful, I was impressed by both ExecutiveDraft and TopResume. Both came back within a few hours with some useful pointers that would have helped me take my resume from "weak" to "fair".

I've selected TopResume as the pick of the bunch because it gives the most detailed feedback breakdown and includes a ATS check which was interesting.

Is a free resume review from TopResume or anyone else going to help you generate a truly excellent resume? No, of course not. Nothing that valuable comes for free! But it's still a good option if you're on a budget and just looking for a few general pointers.

(Please note: This is NOT to say I'd recommend TopResume's paid packages, for reasons I'll explain in section 4)

#4. The Muse (Best for new Grads)

Muse resume review service

Pricing : $139 (30 mins, 1 round of edits), $259 (45 mins, 2 rounds of edits),  $549 (60 mins, unlimited edits, top coach) Format: 1-to-1 video call Reviews: 4.1 on TrustPilot Reviewer expertise: Good quality, vetted resume coaches. Satisfaction guarantee: Yes, 80% or 50% refund depending on when you ask for it.

The Muse is a very well-established site offering a wide range of services including resume coaching. The Muse gets generally good reviews and we've included it as #2 on this list because its coaches are properly vetted and have real expertise. A browse of the resume coaches available reveals that many specialize in working with students or new graduates.

We also like that you can look through coaches' profiles and reviews, and choose the one that best matches your requirements. It's not super cheap, as you'd probably want to go for at least the $259 option to get enough talking time and 2 rounds of edits, but you can be pretty confident of a good outcome.

#5. LinkedIn Resume coaches (Best for accommodating a wide range of needs)

LinkedIn resume review coaches

Pricing : Huge variation, usually on request. Format: Usually 1-to-1 video call but can vary Reviews: Depends on which resume coach you choose Reviewer expertise: Varies Satisfaction guarantee: No

You probably don't think of LinkedIn as somewhere to go to when you're looking to buy a service. And in many ways, it's not very well set up for this. You have to message a coach rather than book them immediately, prices are often only available on request, etc. In other words, it's not a great user experience.

However, it's worth including in this list as a useful option due to the sheer range of recruiters, hiring managers, and resume coaches that you can get in touch with. Whatever industry, role, and location you're looking for, LinkedIn has pretty much got you covered.

(Tip: Add 'resume review' as a skill in the search bar to get people who will review your resume rather than offer to write it from scratch)

#6. MentorCruise (Best if you want a long-term resume /career mentor)

Mentor Cruise resume review

Pricing : Starts at $79 per 30 min session Format: 1-to-1 video call Reviews: 4.6 on TrustPilot Reviewer expertise: Good quality, vetted resume coaches. Satisfaction guarantee: No

There are some good resume coaches available on Mentor Cruise and at $79 for a 30-minute session, it's a good option if you're looking for some quick expert feedback without spending too much.

You can find coaches or "mentors" from a large range of top companies - Amazon, Zalando, DoorDash, to name a few - though bear in mind that the more prestigious the companies they've worked for, the more your mentor is likely to charge.

MentorCruise is set up as a longer-term, mentoring service. The idea is that you pay monthly for the right to a number of calls and communications with your coach/mentor. If that's what you're looking for, it's a solid option.

If you're just looking for a one-off resume review, you can still do that too but the UX is a bit clunky and it can be hard to find exactly what you're looking for.

4. Which resume services you should AVOID

As mentioned above, there is a lot of variation in the resume service market: there are some good services, but there are plenty of poor ones too.

A lot of people ask whether the Indeed resume review service is worth using, due to its relatively low price. We would NOT recommend Indeed if you're hoping for a considered, detailed evaluation, as we've seen reports from its reviewers that they get very little time to spend on your resume.

In general, be sure to avoid resume services that show any of these red flags:

Lack of Transparency: Avoid services that are not transparent about their pricing, processes, or the qualifications of their reviewers or writers. You should know exactly what you're paying for and who will be handling your resume. If not, you risk paying for a resume that's been written by someone completely unqualified.

Price is too low. Top-quality individual resume writers usually charge around $500 per resume or more. So if a site is charging you $150, you should know that your writer will not be a real expert. Likewise, you can find well-reviewed writers on sites like UpWork for $35 but don't expect the expertise that would help you get interviews at top companies.

Cookie-Cutter Templates: Steer clear of services that rely heavily on generic resume templates. Your resume should be tailored to your unique skills and experiences, not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Guaranteed Job Offers: Be cautious of services that promise guaranteed job offers or unrealistic outcomes. Job success depends on various factors, and no service can guarantee employment.

Inadequate Customer Support: Avoid services that provide poor or nonexistent customer support. Good communication and responsiveness are crucial, especially if you have questions or concerns.

No Revisions: A resume service that doesn't offer revisions or edits is one to avoid. Revisions are essential to fine-tune your resume to perfection. It's extremely unlikely that someone else can nail your resume at first time around without at least one opportunity for feedback.

Lack of Samples or Examples: Reputable services should have samples or examples of their work available for you to review. If they can't provide these, it's a red flag.

Overly High Prices: While quality comes at a price, avoid services that charge exorbitant fees without clear justifications. Don't assume that a high price is a guarantee of quality.

No Satisfaction Guarantee: Services that don't offer any form of satisfaction guarantee should be approached with caution. A guarantee demonstrates the service's confidence in its quality.

Unverified Reviews: Be wary of services with no or unverifiable customer reviews. Check sites like TrustPilot or Sitejabber to see real, independent customer reviews.

Hidden Fees: Ensure there are no hidden fees or additional charges that might surprise you after you've committed to the service.

5. Resume review FAQs

Hopefully, you've now got a pretty good idea of how you should go about getting help on your resume, but in case you've still got questions, let's answer a few more here.

5.1 How long does it take to receive feedback from a resume review service?

That really depends. Turnaround times vary a lot by service. Basic reviews might provide feedback within a few days, while more comprehensive reviews can take a week or longer. If you pay more you can usually get quicker results. On IGotAnOffer, you can usually book a resume review session for the next day.

5.2 Are online resume review services as effective as in-person services?

In our experience, yes. Online services provide access to experienced professionals who can offer valuable insights and feedback remotely. In-person services work for some people, particularly older candidates, but it naturally is more time-consuming for everyone involved and you end up paying for other costs such as room rental, transport time, etc.

5.3 Do resume review services guarantee job placement or interviews?

No resume review services can truly guarantee job offers or interviews. While they can enhance your resume's quality, job success depends on various factors, such as your skills, experience, and the job market. Be cautious of services that make unrealistic guarantees.

That said, using a good resume review service should result in a lot more interview invitations. To properly take advantage of this, you might want to consider interview coaching: see our list of the best interview coaching services across different categories. If you're considering doing mock interviews, take a look at our deep dive, "What is a Mock Interview" and our list of the best mock interview sites if you're looking for options.

5.4. Are there any good free resources available I can use to write my resume?

Yes, lots. If you're still at the writing stage, use our resume guides for tips, templates, and plenty of examples of what you should aim for.

Where can i get resume help 14 free and affordable options.

This article originally appeared on My Life, I Guess and has been republished here with permission.

Your resume is your introduction to a potential employer. A weak or ineffective resume will make the wrong first impression and will likely prevent you from getting a job. It's not something that you can just quickly throw together or copy off of Google. Developing a strong resume takes time, as it's unique to you and your experiences.

That's why it's essential to get help with your resume, especially if you've been looking for a job for a while. The good news is there are plenty of free and affordable ways you can get resume help.

DIY Free Resume Help

Assisted free resume help, resume builders, professional resume writers.

Making an effective resume can feel complex, but it doesn't have to be.

This is particularly true if you are updating your current resume, when you're applying for student jobs or entry-level-type jobs, or have a straightforward work history.

If you're comfortable with the more "do-it-yourself" approach and are looking for a bit of help, here are a few of your options:

Your Friends and Family

At a minimum, you should have another person review your resume. They can help you catch typos and other grammatical mistakes, even if they know nothing about writing resumes or the industry you're applying for.

Sometimes, not knowing much about your chosen field is a good thing. The person reviewing your resume can pinpoint any time you use industry jargon or acronyms which may be unclear. Someone in the HR department may not be familiar with these terms, either.

You should be using keywords from the job posting or job description to help avoid any confusion.

Your friends and family can also tell you whether or not your resume passes the 6-second glance test . If they can't tell you within a few seconds what type of job you're trying to get, your resume isn't doing its job and needs fixing.

Your Colleagues

Asking a trusted colleague or co-worker for help with your resume is smart because they know more about the industry and job responsibilities. This is particularly true for specialized and technical roles.

You do need to be careful, though. Unless you are applying for a promotion or internal transfer, you might not want your coworkers to know that you are applying for jobs elsewhere. This information could get back to your manager, and you probably don't want that to happen.

You could reach out to a former colleague or someone from your network instead.

Grammarly is a free program that is essentially an elevated spell-checker and grammar-checker. It will catch the common writing mistakes for you and offer suggestions to make your sentences more concise. The clearer and easier your resume is, the better.

You can use Grammarly with the browser extension, copy and paste your text into their website editor, in Google Docs, or install the Microsoft Word and Outlook add-in. It even works on your text messages and social media updates if you download the app on your phone!

If you do a lot of writing, the paid premium version is absolutely worth it, in my opinion. I use Grammarly every day on every article, email, and resume I write at my day job and for this blog.

Reddit Resumes

Yes, strangers in the Reddit Resumes community will help you with your resume. With over 285,000 members, you can "Post your résumé for critique, critique someone else's, or look for examples of résumés in your field."

And I have to say, as a long-time lurker and occasional commenter, I have been really impressed with the advice people in this community give.

You can upload a version of your resume (with your personal details removed), and people will offer their advice and suggestions.

If you're not comfortable posting your own resume, browsing through the threads is also incredibly helpful, especially if you can find people applying to similar jobs.

Career Blogs

Career blogs offer tons of advice and resources, usually for free. You can browse through the articles for resume tips or sign up for their email lists and job-related resources.

Some resources and services may come at a cost, but signing up to an email list is usually all you need to get access.

Resume & ATS Scanning Websites

There are plenty of free (or free trial) sites that will review your resume and compare it to the specific job posting you're applying for. The algorithms will tell you exactly what needs work, as well as what keywords you're missing.

Most employers use scanning software (Applicant Tracking Systems or ATS) to initially screen applications. While these scanners won't catch spelling mistakes or other errors, they will tell you if you are using the right keywords for the job. And you need those keywords to make it to the next step in the hiring process.

Sites like ResumeWorded.com , Jobscan.co , and ResyMatch.io are my personal favorite and are easy to use. (You will need to create a free account, but they don't ask for a credit card or any payment info.)

You don't have to search for a job alone. There are many different ways you can get assisted, professional help with your resume and job hunting for free.

Employment Centers

Employment centers, unemployment centers, career centers, American Job Centers , employment agencies, employment assessment centers, training centers, skill development centers, workforce development…

No matter what they're called, these organizations are government-funded and free for everyone to use.

The specific services offered at each location will vary, but generally speaking, you can expect to find:

Access to computers, photocopiers, printers, fax machines, and telephones

Local job postings and online job banks

Resources and templates for creating a resume and cover letter

Resume samples

Interview preparation tips

Information on the labor market

Workshops on various job-related topics

Referrals to other agencies and support services

Career assessment tests

Skills training and identification

Staff available to answer your questions and assist you

Employment counseling may also be available, but there might be eligibility criteria (such as being unemployed, working part-time, or within a specific age group).

And as a bonus, if your local center also works with hiring managers and employers, you can get access to job opportunities in the hidden job market .

Social Service Organizations

If you belong to a specific demographic, many social service organizations provide career and job search support. These groups include:

Immigrants, refugees, and newcomers

People with disabilities

People with mental health illnesses

People with crim i nal records

Youth (typically ages 15-25, but can go up to age 29)

People of Aboriginal descent

Homeless people or those living in shelters

People with barriers to employment

In North America, you can call "211" and be connected with the right help, or visit www.211.org (US) or www.211.ca (Canada).

The Library

Most libraries offer training workshops on various topics, including filing your taxes and writing resumes. Unlike the do-it-yourself approach, attending workshops gives you the chance to ask questions and get the specific answers you need.

Libraries usually provide job-related information, resume examples, and helpful links on their website. They also have books and other resources to help with your career development beyond the hiring process.

You should also ask or check out what other free training courses they offer or can refer you to. Learning new job skills will make your resume stronger!

Adult Education Centers & Literacy Centers

Continuing education centers and community centers run various workshops, including job readiness, soft skill development, resume and cover letter assistance, and job searching tips. Depending on the center, they may also provide free career coaching.

If your local adult education or literacy groups don't offer these services, they can tell where you can go to get free resume help.

The employment center I work at has a close partnership with all education, upgrading, and training service providers in our region and will often run workshops for their participants.

College Career Services

If you are a student, soon-to-be grad, recent grad, or alumni, see what career services your college or university provides.

A benefit of working with your school's career center is that they will be more familiar with the degree or diploma program you took and can provide more targeted assistance.

Staffing Agencies

Also known as temp agencies, staffing agencies are designed to match job seekers with employers who are hiring.

As a job seeker, you can meet with a recruiter (for free) who will ask about your skills and experience. They will do a resume critique and provide feedback on how to make your resume stronger, as well as what types of jobs you're best suited for.

If there is a match between your qualifications and an open vacancy, you may not even need to worry about fixing your resume. You could be hired directly for the role!

EMSI Skills is a free skills-based resume builder and optimizer with over 30,000+ skills in its library. Their tools make it easy to add your in-demand and related skills to your resume.

The other resume builders I recommend are not free, but they are super affordable starting at only $3.

Resume Companion , My Perfect Resume , and Zety are very similar, and I like them all a lot. They will walk you through building your resume and cover letter and provide helpful tips and examples that you can click to add. The sites also let you quickly change your template with the click of a button.

A 14-day trial (which may be all you need) is only $3, or pay $96 per year.

My Perfect Resume also has a Chrome extension that works with the major job sites (including Indeed, ZipRecruiter , Monster , Snagajob , and more) that will auto-fill your applications. That alone is worth a few bucks a month, isn't it?

Resumonk is another good option. It has a simple interface that provides resume writing tips, and you can import your LinkedIn profile to make the process even faster. There is a limited free option, but otherwise, it costs $29 per year or $99 for lifetime access.

If you really just want your resume written for you, getting a professional resume writer might be worth the investment (especially if it means you get hired). Depending on what level you are at and what is included, expect to pay anywhere from $100 – $500.

You can get a free resume review through the Job Sauce that includes a phone consultation with a real person and resume expert (US only). They also offer professional resume writing starting at $250 but have mixed reviews.

According to the Balance Careers, the best resume writing services available online include Let's Eat, Grandma , Monster.com , and The Muse .

Resume Writers has been around since 1999 and is also considered one of the top resume writing services. They charge $170 – $300 for a resume and cover letter that will be delivered to you within 72 hours.

If you prefer to work with someone who knows more about your local economy, search online for "professional resume writers near me" and read through the reviews.

Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves a professional resume writer, even if they don't have the qualifications. So if you decide to go this way, asking for a personal recommendation is your best bet, if you know anyone who has hired a resume writer before.

In Conclusion

There are plenty of options available to you to get free help with your resume and job search. Don't be afraid to take advantage of them so that you can stop looking and start working at a job you enjoy!

The 17 Best Free Resume Builders We've Ever Discovered

Caroline Forsey

Published: April 25, 2024

According to GetFive, only 30% of resumes are approved by applicant tracking systems (ATS). Once the resumes are approved, a hiring manager will only spend an average of six seconds reading each resume.

free resume builders

If those stats stress you out, I hear you. Writing a great resume that gets you noticed is tough — that’s why I’m here to encourage you to try a resume builder.

→ Download Now: 12 Resume Templates [Free Download]

In this post, I've compiled a list of the best free resume builders that will help you create a personalized professional resume that passes ATS, stands out to the hiring manager, and helps you land your next job interview.

Why use a resume builder?

Writing a polished resume is second nature for some job applicants. But for others (and maybe most of us), creating a strong resume can be a struggle.

If you're one of the many people who need a little extra support, here are a few ways I think a resume builder can help out.

Resume builders offer templates, clean designs, and tips that speed up resume writing. They also make the process less stressful.

Offers Writing Tips

It takes a lot of work to promote yourself. And even if you enjoy self-promotion, writing isn't a skill everyone has. A resume builder can help you use the best words and phrases to show your experience and knowledge.

Improves Design

Each industry has different expectations for what a great resume looks like. If you're not familiar with design skills or tools, resume builders offer free templates to make your resume look as good as it sounds.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)

Recruiters often use ATS systems to scan resumes. And a good resume builder will help with formatting to make sure that your resume is easy for these systems to read.

I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened

Here’s how to apply for a job using AI

Man holding resume in front of a computer

I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.

Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.

For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy.

The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.

I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.

A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.

The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.

I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019.

If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.

With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.

Resume created by Rezi.ai

My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!

Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.

I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?

I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role.

Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.

The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)

Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.

If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.

My score: 3/5

Resumaker.ai

Resume created by Resumaker

“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?

By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.

The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.

However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards.

Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.

Resume created by Teal

The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is?

Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.

It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.

Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill.

It scored its own resume at 79%.

As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.

My score: 2/5

Kickresume.com

Resume created by Kickresume

The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version.

Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.

Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.

Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.

If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.

I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed.

While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.

My score: 4/5

Resume created by ChatGPT

No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.

I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.

Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.

I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.

I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.

Honorary score: 4/5

The verdict

There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect.

Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

Where Can I Get Resume Help? 14 Free and Affordable Options

college advisor giving student support

There are endless amounts of resume tips and tricks out there – no wonder people are intimidated to write one on their own. But it’s really not that difficult. If you are a good match for the role, making a strong resume will be a snap.

Your resume is not something you can just quickly throw together or copy from Google, though. It’s your introduction to a potential employer that tells them why you are the one  they need to hire. A bad resume will make the wrong first impression and likely prevent you from even getting an interview.

Developing a strong resume takes time, as it’s unique to you and your experiences. That’s why it’s essential to get help with your resume, especially if you’ve been looking for a job for a while.

The good news is that there are plenty of free ways to get resume help, whether you want to do it yourself with a little support or want more hands-on assistance.

DIY Free Resume Help

Making an effective resume can feel complex, but it doesn’t have to be. This is particularly true if you are updating your current resume, applying for student or entry-level jobs, or have a straightforward work history.

If you’re comfortable with the more “do-it-yourself” approach and are looking for a bit of help, here are a few of your options:

1. Ask Your Friends and Family

You should have another person review your resume at a minimum. They can help you catch typos and other grammatical mistakes, even if they know nothing about writing resumes or the industry you’re applying for.

Sometimes, not knowing much about your chosen field is a good thing. The person reviewing your resume can pinpoint any time you use industry jargon or acronyms that may be unclear. Someone in the HR department may not be familiar with these terms, either. You should use keywords from the job posting or job description to help avoid any confusion.

Your friends and family can also tell you whether or not your resume passes the 6-second glance test . If they can’t tell you within a few seconds what type of job you’re trying to get, your resume isn’t doing its job and needs fixing.

2. Ask Your Colleagues

This information could get back to your manager, and you probably don’t want that to happen.

You could reach out to a former colleague or someone from your network instead.

3. Use Grammarly

Grammarly is a free program that is essentially an elevated spell-checker and grammar checker. It will catch common writing mistakes and offer suggestions to make your sentences more concise.

I use Grammarly every day on every article, email, and resume I write.

4. Get Feedback From Reddit Resumes

Yes, strangers in the  Reddit Resumes  community will help you with your resume. And I have to say, as a long-time lurker and occasional commenter, I have been really impressed with the advice people in this community give. With over 1.1 million members in the subreddit, you can upload a version of your resume (with your personal details removed), and people will offer their advice and suggestions.

If you’re not comfortable posting your own resume, browsing through the threads is also incredibly helpful, especially if you can find people applying to similar jobs. These examples will show you what your resume should look like.

5. Find Advice on Career Blogs

Career blogs offer tons of advice and resources, usually for free. You can browse through the articles for resume tips or sign up for their email lists and job-related resources.

Some resources and services may come at a cost, but signing up for an email list is usually all you need to get access. You can access my free career resource library without signing up!

6. Use Resume & ATS Scanning Websites

There are plenty of free (or free trial) sites that will review your resume and compare it to the specific job posting you’re applying for. The algorithms will tell you exactly what needs work, as well as what keywords you’re missing.

Most employers use scanning software (Applicant Tracking Systems or ATS) to initially screen applications. While these scanners won’t catch spelling mistakes or other errors, they will tell you if you are using the right keywords for the job. And you need those keywords to make it to the next step in the hiring process.

Sites like ResumeWorded.com , Jobscan.co , and ResyMatch.io are my personal favorite and are easy to use. (You will need to create a free account, but they don’t ask for a credit card or any payment info.)

Assisted Free Resume Help

You don’t have to search for a job alone. There are many different ways you can get professional help with your resume and hunt for jobs for free.

1. Go to an Employment Center

Employment centers, unemployment centers, career centers, American Job Centers , employment agencies, employment assessment centers, training centers, skill development centers, workforce development… No matter what they’re called, these organizations are government-funded and free for everyone to use.

The specific services offered at each location will vary, but generally speaking, you can expect to find:

  • Access to computers, photocopiers, printers, fax machines, and telephones
  • Local job postings and online job banks
  • Resources and templates for creating a resume and cover letter
  • Resume samples
  • Interview preparation tips
  • Information on the labor market
  • Workshops on various job-related topics
  • Referrals to other agencies and support services
  • Career assessment tests
  • Skills training and identification
  • Staff available to answer your questions and assist you

Employment counseling may also be available, but there might be eligibility criteria (such as being unemployed, working part-time, or within a specific age group).

And as a bonus, if your local center also works with hiring managers and employers, you can get access to job opportunities in the hidden job market .

2. Find Social Service Organizations

If you belong to a specific demographic, many social service organizations provide career and job search support. These groups include:

  • Immigrants, refugees, and newcomers
  • People with disabilities
  • People with mental health illnesses
  • People with criminal records
  • Youth (typically ages 15-25, but can go up to age 29)
  • People of Aboriginal descent
  • Homeless people or those living in shelters
  • People with barriers to employment

In North America, you can call “211” and be connected with the right help, or visit www.211.org (US) or www.211.ca (Canada).

3. Check Out the Library

4. Try Adult Education Centers & Literacy Centers

Continuing education centers and community centers run various workshops, including job readiness, soft skill development, resume and cover letter assistance, and job searching tips. Depending on the center, they may also provide free career coaching.

If your local adult education or literacy groups don’t offer these services, they can tell you where you can go to get free resume help.

The employment center I work at has a close partnership with all education, upgrading, and training service providers in our region and will often run workshops for their participants.

5. Go to Your College Career Center

If you are a student, soon-to-be graduate, recent graduate, or alumni, check what career services your college or university provides.

A benefit of working with your school’s career center is that they will be more familiar with the degree or diploma program you took and can provide more targeted assistance.

6. Try Staffing Agencies

Also known as temp agencies, staffing agencies are designed to match job seekers with employers who are hiring.

As a job seeker, you can meet with a recruiter (for free) who will ask about your skills and experience. They will then critique your resume and provide feedback on how to strengthen it and what types of jobs you’re best suited for. If your qualifications match an open vacancy, you may not even need to worry about fixing your resume. You could be hired directly for the role!

Use Resume Builders

My Perfect Resume also has a Chrome extension that works with the major job sites (including Indeed, ZipRecruiter , Monster, Snagajob, and more) that will auto-fill your applications. That alone is worth a few bucks a month, isn’t it?

Resumonk is another good option. It has a simple interface that provides resume writing tips, and you can import your LinkedIn profile to make the process even faster. There is a limited free option, but otherwise, it costs $29 per year or $99 for lifetime access.

Professional Resume Writers

If you really just want your resume written for you, getting a professional resume writer might be worth the investment (especially if it means you get hired). Depending on what level you are at and what is included, expect to pay anywhere from $100 – $500.

You can get a free resume review through the Job Sauce that includes a phone consultation with a real person and resume expert (US only). They also offer professional resume writing starting at $250 but have mixed reviews.

According to the Balance Careers , the best resume writing services available online include Let’s Eat, Grandma , Monster.com , and The Muse .

Resume Writers has been around since 1999 and is also considered one of the top resume writing services. They charge $170 – $300 for a resume and cover letter that will be delivered to you within 72 hours.

If you prefer to work with someone who knows more about your local economy, search online for “professional resume writers near me” and read through the reviews.

Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves a professional resume writer, even if they don’t have the qualifications. So if you decide to go this way, asking for a personal recommendation is your best bet, if you know anyone who has hired a resume writer before.

Free, But Not Cheap, Resume Help

There are plenty of options available to you to get free help with your resume and job search. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of them so that you can stop looking and start working at a job you enjoy!

Gmail’s Gemini AI sidebar and email summaries are rolling out now

Google is adding gemini ai features for paying customers to docs, sheets, slides, and drive, too..

The Gmail logo on a red and white background

Gmail is getting more AI features that could make it easier to stay on top of your email.

On the web, Google is beginning to roll out a new Gemini side panel that can do things like summarize email threads and draft new emails. The tool will offer “proactive prompts” but you can also ask “freeform questions,” Google writes in a blog post , and it’s “built to leverage Google’s most capable models,” such as Gemini 1.5 Pro . In the Gmail mobile apps, Google will also give you the ability to have Gemini summarize threads.

These improvements could be useful, but they’ll only be available to paid Gemini users: you’ll need to be a Google Workspace customer with a Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on, a Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on, or a Google One AI Premium subscriber. I’d also caution against fully relying on these tools for work; given that AI sometimes hallucinates things , make sure you’re double-checking an important email Gemini helps with before you send it.

Google is also rolling out Gemini features to the side panel in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. Google promised last month at I/O that these features were on the way. And there are still some announced AI features to come for Gmail, including “Contextual Smart Reply.”

Free F1 live stream: Where to watch every Formula 1 GP race weekend from anywhere

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

14 more races of free F1 live streams lie ahead for the 2024 season, and wherever you are in the world, we can help you watch every single lap. As the most popular motorsport in the world, there are plenty of options. And if you're a die-hard fan looking for the whole race weekend experience, we'll help you tune into F1 qualifying, and all Sprint events. All for free. We're heading to Austria next, which also includes a Sprint event.

This hub has everything you need to know about where to watch Formula 1 live streams each week, with multiple countries covered. Due to varying popularity and time zones, some countries charge more than others, and many lock it behind pricier paywalls.

We're big fans of cutting down on streaming costs, so we'll find the cheapest F1 deals for you. More importantly, we can help you watch F1 online for free every week, thanks to numerous live streams around Europe. And if the race is on at a time you can't make, there are options for full replays and an extended highlights show (lasting 90-150 minutes) to help you catch up. We used these options throughout last season, too, and will continue to check they're correct for each race this year as we'll be watching them, too.

  • See also: Where to watch Euro 2024 for free  | MLB live stream  | Free MotoGP live stream

For anyone outside the free F1 live stream countries listed below, geo-restrictions will block you from watching online unless you use a VPN to unlock them . A VPN (a virtual private network) will help simulate your device's location to be in the same country as the F1 broadcast country of your choosing, letting you watch along like a local.

Where to Watch a free F1 live stream

The simplest option for a free F1 live stream this weekend is to use a VPN to tune into one of the free options mentioned above.

None of this week's free F1 live streams come with English commentary. Instead, you would have to rely on the data at the side of the screen or driver comms, which are both usually in English. You could also use an online text commentary site or BBC Radio 5 Live to keep up with events behind the scenes. The extended highlights show we've mentioned is in English, though.

Our preferred option of all the best VPN providers to access free Formula 1 live streams from overseas is ExpressVPN , with a 30-day money-back guarantee if you're unsatisfied. Better yet, you can get an extra three months for free and save 49% on a subscription. Check out our ExpressVPN review for more information on the security app.

We used these F1 live streams throughout last season and still double-check VPN compatibility with each channel every race weekend. These channels feature every race, except the Austrian option, as races alternate each weekend between ORF1 and ServusTV - Servus has the Austrian GP.

How to watch F1 live streams with a VPN

  • Sign up for a VPN if you don't have one.
  • Install it on the device you're using to watch the race.
  • Turn it on and set it to a country with a free live stream.
  • Go to ServusTV (Austria) / ORF1 (Austria) | RTBF (Belgium)  | RTL2 (Luxembourg) .
  • Watch on the live sections of the sites.

free resume help reddit

With its consistent performance, reliable security, and expansive global streaming features, ExpressVPN is the best VPN out there, excelling in every spec and offering many advanced features that makes it exceptional. Better yet, you can save up to 49% and get an extra three months for free today.

Are there extended F1 highlights later?

In the UK, Channel 4 has an excellent (and free!) extended highlights show a few hours after each race. As with the races, the time can vary wildly to mid-afternoon, early evening, or even later. Most shows have lasted for two and a half hours, which is much longer than last season.

You can tune in on the Channel 4 website online and use a VPN as outlined above to watch from outside the UK. Next up are the Austrian GP highlights on June 30, which will be shown at 6:30 p.m.

The actual race highlights are often very comprehensive. For example, we've timed it this season, and the usual two-and-a-half-hour show dedicated 75 minutes to the highlights of a race that lasted around 90 minutes in full. The rest of the show features pre and post-race interviews and discussions.

This is the best option if you want English coverage and don't want to sign up for a sports streaming service. Even with the cost of a VPN accounted for, if you need one (and if you want to watch from outside of the UK, you will), you're coming out on top.

You can also watch these highlights on-demand the day after. That said, we sometimes notice this version is slightly shorter than the usual highlights program.

How to watch Formula 1 live streams in the US

ESPN has coverage of Formula 1 racing throughout the season. If you don't already have access to the channel, there are a couple of cord-cutting options for you to consider. Sling TV's Orange tier is usually $40 a month, but a special offer now sees that first month's price slashed to just $20.

ESPN+ is also an option for some races this season, including the Austrian GP and the Qatar race. We're not seeing anything else lined up on their schedules, which sadly means forking out for the full-sized ESPN channel via one of the above US options if you want local US coverage for the rest of the season. As mentioned earlier, going for a free live stream from Europe will be cheaper, of course.

free resume help reddit

For just the essentials without any extra fluff, Sling TV is the streaming service you're looking for. It's more customizable than other plans, with three options you can choose from, so you pay for only what you need. New members get their first month for $25 off.

How to watch F1 live streams in the UK

The only free live Formula 1 race you'll likely get in the UK will be the British GP at Silverstone, as the last few seasons have seen Sky share coverage with Channel 4 for the event.

As for the rest of the season, Channel 4 runs an excellent extended highlights show a few hours after each race, which is a solid free alternative. They even do qualifying highlights a few hours after that wraps up the day before, too.

If you really want to see everything live , a Sky Sports deal is your best bet, and this is a great way to get it in glorious 4K, too. Sky has every race weekend, so you won't need to hop around between it and networks like TNT like you do for the Premier League.

If you don't want a traditional TV contract and would prefer a monthly option you can drop whenever you wish, Sky's Now TV offshoot has a Sky Sports tier that costs £11.99 for a day pass or £34.99 a month.

The main appeal of Now TV is it runs on a rolling one-month contract, but if you need it every week, it's arguably a better deal to get a proper Sky Sports package as you'll get way more bang for your buck. Also, Now TV is still operating in the dark ages and has the gall to charge extra for HD in 2024.

If you're craving an English F1 live stream from overseas, though, the online-only Now TV is at least compatible with a VPN, as are the free Channel 4 highlights mentioned earlier.

How to watch F1 qualifying

All the international streaming options mentioned earlier in this guide for the US and Europe will also show the qualifying sessions each race weekend. Austria qualifying is on Saturday, June 29, and starts at 10 a.m. ET / 3 p.m. BST / 4 p.m. CEST / 10 p.m. AWST. 90 minutes of highlights will be shown on Channel 4 in the UK at 6:30 p..m. BST on Saturday.

Note: Using VPNs is illegal in certain countries, and using VPNs to access region-locked streaming content might constitute a breach of the terms of use for certain services. Insider does not endorse or condone the illegal use of VPNs.
