FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™­

Eleven years after Qatar was awarded the rights to host the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup™, the countdown to the tournament has entered its final year – with many milestone moments reached during 2021.

Countdown clock unveiled­

On 21 November 2021, the one-year-to-go anniversary until the start of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 was marked with a special ceremony in Qatar. The tournament will be like no other, and the spectacular ceremony on the Corniche waterfront across from the West Bay skyline gave a taste of the spectacular event to come.

Football fans worldwide were also invited to “Join the Beat” virtually and celebrate the milestone, as the official countdown clock, powered by Hublot, was revealed. The 30-minute launch ceremony also featured a drone show, special guests and other surprises, ramping up the anticipation as the first FIFA World Cup to be held in the Middle East and Arab world emerges over the horizon.

Speaking at the event, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said:

“I’ve been involved in the organisation of sports events for the past few decades, and I’ve never witnessed anything like what is happening here. Everything is ready, the venues will be fantastic. The experience for the fans will be great.”

“The world will discover a country and a whole region. Qatar, the Gulf region, the Middle East, the Arab world. A place where people meet and come together. This is what football is all about, this is about what this part of the world and its culture is all about, and the world will realise that."

“This is a unique and special moment for Qatar as the host country. After 11 years of hard work and lasting progress, we are well on the way towards delivering the first World Cup in our region, one that will leave a profound legacy for Qatar, the region and the entire world.”

Three more stadiums inaugurated­

The stunning Al Bayt Stadium – which will host the first match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 – was unveiled on the opening day of the FIFA Arab Cup. The 60,000-capacity venue, which was designed to resemble the tents formerly used by nomadic people in the Gulf region, hosted Qatar’s 1-0 victory against Bahrain as the 16-team tournament got off to an exciting start.

Straight after Al Bayt’s inauguration, Stadium 974 also hosted its first game. The arena, which is made primarily from shipping containers and can seat 40,000, staged the United Arab Emirates’ 2-1 victory against Syria. Stadium 974 was named after the number of shipping containers used in its construction. It is also Qatar’s international dialling code.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “Al Bayt is the house where everyone is uniting, where everyone is coming together. It is a symbol for what the World Cup represents. The Arab Cup represents today what the World Cup will represent next year of people coming together, of people being united from all over the world. So, to have games in such a beautiful stadium, in such a symbolic stadium, is something that we have to cherish and that will be crucial for the success of the World Cup.”

In October 2021, another FIFA World Cup milestone was reached as Al Thumama Stadium became the sixth tournament-ready venue to be inaugurated when it hosted the Amir Cup final, which was won by Al Sadd. The stadium followed Khalifa International, Al Janoub, Education City, Ahmad Bin Ali and Al Bayt in being declared ready to host matches during the 22ⁿᵈ edition of the FIFA World Cup.

This leaves just one FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 venue to be inaugurated – Lusail Stadium. The main construction work was completed in 2021 and the stadium was due to open its doors to the public in early 2022.

FIFA unveiled details of Saudi Arabia's bid to host the 2034 World Cup on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 in Paris. Growing Together, the official slogan of the bid received the full support of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

We are working together to materialise Saudi Arabia's dream of hosting the FIFA World Cup into a tangible reality - according to our official bid book, said Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Minister of Sport and President of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

These plans will combine our rich football heritage with our deep passion for the game and ensure Saudi Arabia's success as the first nation to host a 48-team tournament in one country - he added. Yasser Al-Misehal, president of the Saudi Football Federation, said it was a natural step in the development of Saudi football and the sports sector.

Stadiums beyond this earth

Saudi Arabia, known for its natural resources, is placing importance on infrastructural and technological development. Hosting the World Cup is an opportunity for it to show a new face - an open, dynamic and innovative country. The plan includes five cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar, Abha and the futuristic NEOM project.

A key element of the bid is the stadiums - as many as 15 of which are to be used during the tournament. The vast majority of these venues are to be redesigned or extensively upgraded to meet the highest global standards. Riyadh, the country's capital, is where the biggest events are planned, including the opening matches and the final. In Jeddah, known for its beautiful beaches and modern buildings, a stadium with unique architecture will be built to be a symbol of the new Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has unveiled its bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, with as many as 15 stadiums included. Here is a brief description of each of them:

King Salman International Stadium, Riyadh (new stadium) - This spectacular new stadium will have the largest capacity in Saudi Arabia and will become the main sporting venue and home of the national team. The stadium will host the opening and final matches and its surroundings will become a highlight of the Green Riyadh masterplan, contributing to the ongoing transformation of the city.

• Capacity: 92,760 spectators.
• World Cup phases: Opening match, group phase, Round of 32 and 16 matches, quarter-final, semi-final and final

King Fahd International Stadium , Riyadh - This existing stadium is one of the most iconic venues in the region, with a distinctive fabric roof inspired by traditional tents. It is close to attractions such as the planned Sports Boulevard, which will provide community access to green spaces. The refurbishment will significantly increase capacity and enable the venue to be used for everything from football matches to concerts.

• Capacity: 70,200 spectators.
• World Cup phases: Group phase, Round of 32 and 16 matches, quarter-final and semi-final.

King Abdullah Sports City Stadium , Jeddah - This stadium was built in 2014 and is known as the 'Shining Jewel' due to its distinctive geometric architecture. Planned renovations aim to bring the stadium up to FIFA requirements and integrate it with the existing architecture.

• Capacity: 58,432 spectators.
• World Cup phases: Group stage, Round of 32, 16 matches and quarter-finals.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium , Qiddiya (new stadium) - This new stadium will be located in the Qiddiya complex and its design offers spectacular views of the Tuwaiq cliffs. The stadium's materials, including iridescent glass and shiny metal, contribute to a futuristic aesthetic.

• Capacity: 46,979 spectators.
• World Cup phases: Group phase, Round of 32, 16 matches and 3rd place match

Prince Faisal bin Fahd Sports City , Riyadh - This will be a new multi-purpose sports facility in Riyadh. Its design draws inspiration from the culturally contextualised modernism principles of Salmani architecture. The stadium will be part of a wider plan for the park area. It will be at the heart of a vibrant facility that will provide residents with a mix of sports facilities and green spaces.

• Capacity: 46,865 seats.
• World Cup phases: Group phase and Round of 32 match

King Saud University Stadium , Riyadh - This existing stadium is located next to the vibrant U Walk - King Saud University's mixed-use development. It currently hosts Saudi Pro League matches and other major sporting events, and will be expanded in capacity for the competition.

• Capacity: 46,319 seats.

Murabba Stadium, Riyadh (new stadium) - The distinctive design of this new stadium mimics the overlapping planes and bark texture of the native acacia tree.

• Capacity: 46,010 seats.

Neom Stadium, Neom (new stadium) - This new stadium will be the most unique in the world. With a pitch more than 350 metres above the ground and a roof created from the city itself, the stadium will be an experience like no other. Once completed, it will be the home of a professional football club and the focal point of the city's sports and active lifestyle programme.

• World Cup phases: Group phase, Round of 32, 16 matches and quarter-finals.

Aramco Stadium, Khobar (new stadium) - This new stadium is located in the northern part of Al Khobar, on the shores of the Arabian Gulf. Its architecture celebrates the dynamic nature of the sea. After the tournament, the stadium will be home to a professional football club.

• Capacity: 46,096 seats.
• World Cup phases: Group phase, Round of 32 and 16 matches

Qiddiya Coast Stadium, Qiddiya (new stadium) - This new stadium will be located in the heart of the Qiddiya Coast Development, on the banks of the Red Sea, with other sports infrastructure and hotels nearby. Its design evokes a Mexican wave effect with a rich and joyful colour palette.

• Capacity 46,096.
• World Cup phases: Group stage, Round of 32 and 16 matches

Roshn Stadium, Riyadh (new stadium) - The new stadium has been designed as a dynamic part of the urban fabric, with a different look to typical sports facilities. It will be located in a central square surrounded by a crystalline bowl structure, a delicate mesh that will glow in the night sky.

• Capacity 46,000.

King Khalid University Stadium, Abha - This existing stadium is located in the south-east of Abha. Capacity will be increased to more than 45,000 for the 2034 FIFA World Cup and the renovation will focus on upgrading the infrastructure while respecting the stadium's historical context.

• Capacity: 45,428 seats.
• World Cup phases: Group stage, Round of 32 and 16 matches.

Jeddah Development Stadium, Jeddah (new stadium) - This stadium draws on the traditional architecture of the historic Al Balad district of Jeddah, while incorporating technological advances and innovative building design. It will be the anchor of the JCD sports district, seamlessly integrated with the surrounding villages.

• Capacity: 45,794 seats

King Abdullah Economic City Stadium, Jeddah (new stadium) - This new stadium will serve the vibrant King Abdullah Economic City area on the Red Sea coast. Its versatile design and organic aesthetics are inspired by how local coral reefs grow.

• Capacity: 45,700 seats
• World Cup phases: Group stage and Round of 32 match

South Riyadh Stadium, Riyadh (new stadium) - The stunning design of this new stadium is inspired by the culturally contextualised modernism principles of Salmani architecture. Once the competition is complete, the stadium will be home to a professional football club and host sporting and entertainment events.

• Capacity of 40,060 seats.

Additional infrastructure

A total of 132 training venues located in 15 cities are planned for the championship. In addition, base camps are planned for 48 teams, including 72 locations designated as Base Camp Training Sites. Referees are to have access to two training camps. The official bid book shows 10 proposed FIFA Fan Festival locations in Arabia. FIFA will select one location in each host city from the list. King Salman Park in Riyadh, will become the largest city park in the world.

A Position-Based Material Point Method 

It's well understood that game physics simulations have to execute quickly, but the most difficult requirement is actually the stability of the simulation. Game physics simulations must operate completely autonomously, and usually, the player has some kind of input into the simulation, which can potentially be quite violent. This severely constrains the methods that we can use.

The explicit Material Point Method (MPM) is an easily implemented scheme for simulating a wide variety of different physical materials. However, it has well-known stability issues.

We have implemented a novel semi-implicit compliant constraint formulation of MPM that is stable at any time-step while remaining as easy to implement as an explicit integrator. We call this method Position Based MPM (PB-MPM). This work significantly improves the utility of MPM for real-time applications.

FIFA has unveiled the emblem for the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup™ , the most inclusive competition in the history of club football, as the countdown to the first edition in the United States next year continues. Gala's Freed from Desire , which has become a rallying football anthem for fans of both clubs and national teams over the past two decades, has been announced as the audio signature while FIFA has also launched "Take it to the World" – a call to action for fans to showcase what makes their club special. The FIFA Club World Cup 2025™, to be played from 15 June to 13 July 2025, will include representatives from each of the six continental confederations – AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), Concacaf (North, Central America and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), OFC (Oceania) and UEFA (Europe). It will redefine how, when and where true club world champions are crowned.

The new competition is part of FIFA's efforts to provide more match opportunities at national-team and club level for all FIFA Member Associations – one of FIFA’s strategic objectives for the 2023-2027 cycle – and to level up standards around the world. To date, 30 of the 32 teams have qualified, with an additional club from CONMEBOL (South America) and the host country representative to be confirmed in due course. The qualification path, which is via continental club competitions, is based on sporting merit across a four-year cycle, ensuring that continental champions and clubs demonstrating consistency are rewarded.

The emblem, which will be adapted and used for all future editions of the tournament, takes inspiration from the ball, football history and culture, with the initials of the tournament “C – W – C” abstracted into a circular icon. The unique FIFA Club World Cup emblem features space in the centre for FIFA to showcase the elements closest to the tournament – namely the successful clubs from all six confederations that will compete in the United States FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “What a special moment. Today, we launched the brand of the new FIFA Club World Cup – the start of a new era in club football.” “Thirty-two of the best clubs from all corners of the world will be competing in the United States in June and July 2025. They are at the heart of the tournament. And we cannot wait. Thirty-two of the best clubs globally will meet on the world stage and only one will be crowned world champions.” “So we want you – the fans from across the world – to share your club stories, to bring your love, your passion, your support; to show what your club is made of, and take it to the world.”

At the same time FIFA has collaborated with Italian pop singer and songwriter Gala to make Freed from Desire , which holds an iconic status in football culture, the tournament's audio signature. Given its resonance with fans globally, integrating this classic track validates the historical significance of football and clubs whilst marking a new chapter in the sport’s evolution. FIFA will work with the qualified clubs to elevate, showcase and celebrate the unique features and folklore of each one, removing borders to their international ambitions and providing the opportunity for them to share their stories with the world. FIFA aims for the perfect pitch at 2026 World Cup following fields called a disaster at Copa America

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The 2026 World Cup is coming to North America with an ambitious plan, expanding the field by 50% and spreading the soccer spectacle over 16 cities in three countries with multiple climates and elevations.

FIFA, aiming to create the perfect pitch for every venue, partnered with turf experts at the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University to research and develop the best surfaces for the tournament.

When the World Cup begins in less than two years with 48 teams playing 104 matches in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, no one wants the field — or pitch, as many soccer aficionados call it — to be a topic of conversation like it was earlier this summer for a different major tournament.

The Copa America , which South American soccer body CONMEBOL organizes every four years, was dogged by problems with shaky surfaces.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez called the grass field that replaced artificial turf a “disaster,” after beating Canada in the opener on June 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Criticism continued with other teams and coaches early in the tournament.

“FIFA has high expectations and demands that we can’t have any any failures,” John Sorochan, professor of turfgrass science and management at Tennessee, said recently in a telephone interview. “That’s why they’re supporting so much research and preparation so that they don’t have what happened at Copa, and the embarrassment of what CONMEBOL had.”

Like at this year’s Copa America, some football stadiums — including some with a roof — will host games at the next World Cup.

Sorochan, along with his mentor and former professor at Michigan State, Trey Rogers, addressed a similar challenge three decades ago when the World Cup first visited the United States in 1994 and games were played indoors at the Pontiac Silverdome in suburban Detroit.

“One of the easiest decisions I have made around this tournament so far was the partnering of UT and MSU universities,” said Alan Ferguson, FIFA26 director of infrastructure and technical services. “Both already had world-leading reputations, both already led by world-leading turf professors. I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel — it was already here.”

Climate change may be an additional variable, especially with games stretching from Mexico to Canada, and the turf experts are considering several varieties of surfaces to address it.

“While new varieties of grasses have not been bred to specifically address the challenges of the World Cup, turfgrass breeding efforts over the past 20 years have released new grass varieties that have improved heat, drought, disease and wear tolerance,” Sorochan said earlier this week.

Tennessee created what it calls a shade house to replicate an indoor stadium. Michigan State, meanwhile, has a 23,000-square-foot slab of asphalt to develop the concept of laying turf grown on plastic instead of soil on stadium surfaces.

Rogers and his team test how the natural surface responds to a ball bouncing and when cleats make contact.

A couple months ago at Copa America, Martínez said the ball jumped off the field as if it was a springboard.

In two years, Rogers said the goal is to not hear anyone discussing the playing surface at the World Cup.

“If nobody mentions the field,” he said, “we know we’ve done our job.”
