athletics , a variety of competitions in running , walking , jumping, and throwing events. Although these contests are called track and field (or simply track) in the United States , they are generally designated as athletics elsewhere. This article covers the history, the organization, and the administration of the sports , the conduct of competitions, the rules and techniques of the individual events, and some of the sports’ most prominent athletes.

Track-and-field athletics are the oldest forms of organized sport, having developed out of the most basic human activities—running, walking, jumping, and throwing. Athletics have become the most truly international of sports, with nearly every country in the world engaging in some form of competition. Most nations send teams of men and women to the quadrennial Olympic Games and to the official World Championships of track and field. There also are several continental and intercontinental championship meets held, including the European, Commonwealth, African, Pan-American, and Asian.

Within the broad title of athletics come as many as two dozen distinct events. These events, generally held outdoors, make up a meet. The outdoor running events are held on a 400-meter or 440-yard oval track, and field events (jumping and throwing) are held either inside the track’s perimeter or in adjacent areas.

In many parts of the world, notably the United States, Canada, and Europe, the sport moves indoors during the winter; because of limited space, some events are modified and several are eliminated altogether.

Also within the general scope of track-and-field athletics come separate but related competitions that are not contested on the track. Cross-country running competition is carried out on various types of countryside and parkland. Marathons and races of other long distances are run on roads, and the long-distance race walks are contested on measured road courses. The rules followed by all organized competitions are established and enforced by World Athletics (formerly the International Association of Athletics Federations [IAAF]) and its member body from each nation. World Athletics also ratifies all world records.

There is little in the way of definitive records of athletics’ early days as organized sport. Egyptian and Asian civilizations are known to have encouraged athletics many centuries before the Christian era. Perhaps as early as 1829 bce , Ireland was the scene of the Lugnasad festival’s Tailteann Games, involving various forms of track-and-field activity. The Olympic Games of Greece , traditionally dated from 776 bce , continued through 11 centuries before ending about 393 ce . These ancient Olympics were strictly male affairs, as to both participants and spectators. Greek women were reputed to have formed their own Heraea Games, which, like the Olympics, were held every four years.

Athletics as practiced today was born and grew to maturity in England . The first mention of the sport in England was recorded in 1154, when practice fields were first established in London . The sport was banned by King Edward III in the 1300s but revived a century later by Henry VIII , reputed to be an accomplished hammer thrower .

The development of the modern sport, however, has come only since the early 19th century. Organized amateur footraces were held in England as early as 1825, but it was from 1860 that athletics enjoyed its biggest surge to that date. In 1861 the West London Rowing Club organized the first meet open to all amateurs, and in 1866 the Amateur Athletic Club (AAC) was founded and conducted the first English championships. The emphasis in all these meets was on competition for “gentlemen amateurs” who received no financial compensation. In 1880 the AAC yielded governing power to the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA).

The first meet in North America was held near Toronto in 1839, but it was the New York Athletic Club, formed in the 1860s, that placed the sport on a solid footing in the United States. The club held the world’s first indoor meet and helped promote the formation in 1879 of the National Association of Amateur Athletes of America (NAAAA) to conduct national championships. Nine years later the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) took over as national governing body, amid reports that the NAAAA was lax in enforcing amateurism.

Athletics was well established in many countries by the late 1800s, but not until the revival of the Olympic Games in 1896 did the sport become truly international. Although begun modestly, the Olympics provided the inspiration and standardizing influence that was to spread interest in athletics worldwide . In 1912 the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was founded, and by the time that organization celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1987 it had more than 170 national members. Its rules applied only to men’s competition until 1936, when the IAAF also became the governing body of women’s athletics. The IAAF changed its name to World Athletics in 2019.

Major international competitions before World War II included the Olympics, the British Empire Games , and the European Championships, but after the war athletics experienced its greatest period of growth, taking root especially in the developing countries. By the 1950s world-class athletes from African, Asian, and Latin American nations were enjoying great success at international meets.

Athletics in Physical Education

athletics assignment pdf

The activities like running, jumping and throwing something, etc. are the normal and inborn activities of man. During the ancient periods, these activities were done by the primates for self-defense and food gathering. Over time, these activities were used for pastime and entertainment. Later the tournaments were organised on activities like running, jumping, and throwing. These activities in the modern world are known as Athletics. Race, long jump, high jump, Shotput, and hammer throw are examples of athletics.

The term athletics receives its origin from the Roman word ‘Athlon’. It means contest or competition. The person who takes part in these activities is known as athlete. The ancient Olympic Games originated in 776 B.C. in ancient Greek. The Romans organised these games till 394 A.D. It was known as ‘Track and Field’. Soon after this, tournaments on athletics got popularity in France, England and Germany. But a French national Pierre- De-Coubertin revived these ancient contests throughout the world. In 1896 first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece where athletics events were introduced. International Amateur Athletic Federation was established in 1912. The first Asian Track and Field tournament was held at Manila, Philippines in 1973.

Athletic has three types of events:

  • (i) Track: We compete against time or clock.
  • (ii) Field: We compete against Height or Distance.
  • (iii) Miscellaneous events: Decathlon, Pentathlon, (Men) Heptathlon, Decathlon (women).

The running events are called track events. These include 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 110 m hurdle (Men) 100 m hurdle (Women), 400 m hurdle, 4 × 100 m relay and 4 × 400 m relay. These races are run with full power and speed. These are called sprint races.

The races of 800 m and 1500 m are called middle distance races. These races require patience, speed, stamina and power.

The races of 3000 m, 5000 m, 10,000 m, Marathon race, Cross Country are called long distance races.

The jumping and throwing events are called field events. They are of two types:

  • (i) Jumping Events
  • (ii) Throwing Events
Jumping Events Throwing Events
Long jump Shot put
High jump Discus throw
Pole vault Javelin throw
Triple jump Hammer throw

Some other unique events which are known as Miscellaneous events are also organised in Athletics.

The events are held over two consecutive days.

  • (a) First day: 100 m long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 m.
  • (b) Second day: 110 m hurdle, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500 m.

It consists of 200 m, 1500 m, long jump, javelin throw, discus throw.

Following seven events are held over two consecutive days.

  • (a) First day: 100 m hurdle, shot put, high jump, 200 m.
  • (b) Second day: long jump, javelin throw, 800 m.

There are ten events which are held over two consecutive days:

  • (a) First day: 100 m, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, 400 m.
  • (b) Second day: 100 m hurdle, long jump, shot put, high jump, 1500 m.
  • The athlete will remain in his own lane throughout the race which are run in lanes.
  • An athlete is not allowed to continue the race again who leaves the track with his own will.
  • Every player is given 1½ minutes time for taking a jump.
  • In high jump, the approach path of the approach run bears length of 15 m to 20 m.
  • If landing is done using the leg opposite to that used for takeoff, it is considered as foul.
  • The player should not come out from the circle until the shot touches the ground.
  • Distance is measured in even as well as odd numbers in discus throw, hammer throw and javelin throw.
  • The recommended angle for the landing area of the discus is 34.920 . The discus should fall in that very angle.
  • If the javelin has touched the segment or the two lines drawn at its edge, it is considered as foul.
  • The length of the hammer is recommended to be 117.5 cm to 121.5 cm.
  • Baton is to be picked by the same player who dropped it during relay race.

Track Events Related measurements and specifications of Equipment:

Parameters men women
1. Distance of race (m) 110, 400 100, 400
2. Height of hurdle (m) 1.067, 0.914 0.840, 0.762
3. Distance from start line to first hurdle (m)13.72, 45 13, 45
4. Distance between hurdles (m)9.14, 35 8.5, 35
5. Distance from last hurdle to finish line (m)14.02, 4010.5, 40

In 400 m hurdle race, the hurdler faces the problem of coordinating his steps. From the starting line to the first hurdle, a hurdler usually completes this distance in 21 or 23 steps, completes the distance between hurdles in 13, 15 or 17 steps. Some hurdlers cover this distance in the beginning in 14 steps and later on they cover it in 16 steps. If the Jump is taken with the right foot it is much beneficial. Generally, the jump is taken from 2.00 m before the hurdle. After crossing the hurdle, the first step is usually placed 1.20 m forward from the hurdle. Rest of the technique remains same as in 100 m and 110 m hurdles.

The finishing of hurdle race is equally important as the starting. Generally, three techniques are used in finishing.

The hurdler runs very fast without any attention on his real aim and crosses the finishing line as quickly as possible.

Lunging is done before one step of the finishing line. The hurdler tries to touch his torso to the finishing tape.

In this technique, the hurdler bends his one shoulder forward along with hand. The other shoulder remains backward. By bending forword, the hurdler tries to touch the finishing tape at the earliest.

A relay race is a track and field event in which athletes run a pre-set distance carrying a baton before passing it onto the next runner. A relay team is a team of four sprinters. There are two kinds of relay races for men and women: Men 4 × 100 m Women 4 × 100 m Women 4 × 400 m 4 × 400 m

  • Baton is exchanged after every 20 metre distance.
  • Baton is made up of wood, metal or any rigid substance in rounded and hollow tube shaped.
  • 5 cm thick side line is drawn in each and every lane to show the baton exchange area.
  • Length of baton should be 28-30cm. Its area is marked with red line on both the sides.
  • Runners exchange the baton running in their lane in 4 × 400 m.
  • Speed up zone lies 10 m before the starting line in exchange area. It is marked with a yellow line.
  • Circumference of batons should be around 12-13 cm.
  • Weight of baton should not be less than 50 g.
  • Use of any unfair mean, pull or push can disqualify the runner.

At the starting line of their lanes, the participants should stand their captain, the first athlete starts running as soon as permission is granted and goes to the end line then he came back and touches the next athlete of his team and stands aback. The race continues until all the athletes have taken part. The group whose athlete comes back first after touching the finishing line is declared as winner.

Baton is exchanged in two ways: (i) Visual Method: It is used in 4 × 400 m relay. (ii) Non visual Method: (upward or downward) It is used in 4 × 400 m relay.

Shot-put is main event of throwing events. The player who throws the shot is called a putter. The athlete should have qualities like power, flexibility and speed to throw the shot.

There are following skills in throwing the discus:

In initial position, the discus thrower stands in the circle facing back to the throwing direction. His both feet should be opened and in a straight line. He takes one or two swings. Then he moves towards the left by bending his knees.

While taking a turn, his body weight should shift from right foot to left foot. Then right foot comes in the centre of the circle simultaneously, the left foot comes toward the throwing direction.

In this phase, the thrower’s feet rest on the surface of the circle. The left leg remains straight while the right leg remains in bending position. The discus is now thrown with full force.

Javelin Throw is another major, throwing event. An athlete should have speed, power, patience, balance etc. for Javelin throw. It is very smooth surfaced arrow made up of metal or wood.

Hammer is made up of a solid metallic sphere connected with single piece of steel wire having a metallic handle attached at the end of wire. The grip is semicircular or triangular in shape. Hammer Throw is another major, throwing event

(1) Throws should be within the sector angle and within the sector. Otherwise it will be a foul. (2) If any equipment breaks during the throw, the thrower will get another chance to throw. (3) Qualifying marks are fixed if the number of participants is more than twenty-five. (4) Throwers are allowed to use powder or any sticky material to grip the equipment. (5) Every thrower is to be given three chances. After that best of twelve throwers are given 6 chances each to throw again.

Jumping events consist of four events. 1. Long Jump 2. Triple Jump 3. High Jump 4. Pole Vault

Long jump (historically called the broad jump) is a track and field event in which athletes combine speed, strength and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a takeoff point.

  • All rules of Long Jump equally apply in Triple Jump.
  • All the jumpers will be given three chances to Jump.
  • Best of twelve jumpers are given six chances each.
  • One minute is given to complete the long jump.
  • One and half minute is given to complete the triple jump.
  • Jumps are measured as the distance between take off board and the last point of contact with sand in landing pit.

High Jump is also considered as one of the major events of field events. In it an athlete crosses a jump. An athlete should have activeness, and flexibility.

Measurements and specification of equipment:

Event Measurement
Length of run way 15-20 m
Length of landing area 5 m (min)
Width of landing area 3 m (min)
Distance between upright 4-4. 04 m
Weight of cross bar 2 kg (max)
Length of cross bar 3.98 – 4.02 m
Diameter of cross bar 29-31mm
Length of supports for crossbar 6 cm
Width of supports for crossbar 4 cm

1. Before the competition the judges announce the height to the competitors. 2. One-minute time is given to each jumper to complete the jump. 3. Each and every jumper is given three chances for one height. 4. Competitors must land within the landing area. 5. The competitors must take off from line foot.

The only jumping event, in which an apparatus known as pole is used is called pole vault. The cross bar is crossed with the help of a pole. This event is very difficult. A good pole vaulter should have speed, power, flexibility, patience and coordination.

Measurement type specification
Length 40-45 m
Width 1.22-1.25 m
Distance between uprights 4.30-4.37 m
Length of cross-bar 4.48-4.52 m
Diameter of cross-bar 29-31mm
Weight of cross bar 2.25 kg
Length and width of landing 5×5 m
Height of landing area 1 m

1. The length of approach path (track) for approach run is kept between 40 m to 45 m. 2. The player remains in the contest till he makes three fouls. Then he is declared ‘out’. 3. No jump is counted if: (a) cross bar falls down from support (b) jumper touches the landing area stop board or ground by the pole before crossing the crossbar. 4. Jumper is given another chance if the pole is broken. 5. No one is allowed to touch the pole unless it is falling away from the bar or uprights. 6. The bar is raised by at least 5 cm after each round. 7. The competitor is allowed to apply powder or other sticky material on palm and pole for proper grip.

Athletics Designate Kyle Muller For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | August 13, 2024 at 1:55pm CDT

The Athletics announced that Joe Boyle has been recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas. He will start tonight’s game against the Mets, per Martín Gallegos of MLB.com on X . In a corresponding move, left-hander Kyle Muller has been designated for assignment.

Muller, 26, was one of five players that the A’s received in December of 2022 in the three-team trade that sent catcher Sean Murphy to Atlanta, William Contreras to the Brewers and various other moving pieces. Muller had been considered one of Atlanta’s best prospects in the years leading up to that deal but had struggled to establish himself at the big league level and had just one option remaining.

The A’s gave him a decent amount of runway to take a major league job last year but Muller wasn’t able to capitalize on the opportunity. Through May 22, he had made 10 starts at the big league level but allowed 42 earned runs in 47 innings, leading to an 8.04 ERA. The A’s then optioned him to the minors, recalling him for one spot start in early July, but otherwise keeping him in Triple-A until mid-August.

The results on the farm weren’t much better, as he had a 7.26 ERA in his 13 Triple-A starts. He was recalled and worked as a swingman for the final few weeks of the big league season, tossing 25 innings with a 7.20 ERA in that time.

That left him out of options coming into 2024 and the A’s have kept in the bullpen for a long relief role. He missed just over a month on the IL due to left shoulder tendinitis but has logged 42 2/3 innings over 18 outings this year with a 4.22 ERA. That’s obviously an improvement over his results from last year and his 5.1% walk rate is quite strong, but there aren’t many positive metrics apart from that. His 19.7% strikeout rate is still subpar and his Statcast page is mostly blue, with not much to inspire confidence in terms of velocity, whiffs, avoiding barrels, etc.

Keeping him on the roster was going to be a long-term issue due to his out-of-options status and he hasn’t shown enough promise for the club’s decision makers to keep him around. With the trade deadline now passed, the A’s will have to put him on waivers in the coming days.

He has not yet qualified for arbitration and has five years of club control beyond this one, so perhaps some club will be intrigued by his past prospect pedigree, but they would be faced with the same roster restrictions that the A’s were. As recently as 2022, he was able to make 23 Triple-A starts with a 3.41 ERA, 29.3% strikeout rate, 7.4% walk rate and 45.9% ground ball rate, but the results have been far less impressive since then. He does not have a previous career outright nor does he have three years of service time, meaning he would stick with the A’s as non-roster depth if he were to pass through waivers unclaimed.

As for Boyle, it’s unclear if this is just a spot start or if he’s going to get a longer rotation audition. The A’s already had five starters in JP Sears , Ross Stripling , Mitch Spence , Joey Estes and Osvaldo Bido . Perhaps they could run a six-man rotation for a while or send someone down to Triple-A. It’s also possible that they put Stripling on waivers or move him to the bullpen. He’s a 34-year-old impending free agent and the club is out of contention, so they might prefer to give starts to younger guys that are in consideration for roles on next year’s club.

Boyle has a 7.16 ERA in the majors this year and a mark of 5.63 in Triple-A, but his work on the farm has been better of late. Back on June 28, he was demolished in his start against Sacramento, allowing eight earned runs while only recording four outs. Since that pounding, he has thrown 26 2/3 innings with a 2.36 ERA and a massive 51.5% strikeout rate, though a high walk rate of 12.9%.

It just didn’t work for Muller, unfortunately. He didn’t seem comfortable enough on any pitching role given by the A’s.

Another pitcher that was a big part of a trade that didn’t pan out. Think he was part of the Matt Olson trade. So today nothing has panned out of the Matt Olson or Sean Murphy trades with Atlanta. In fact Oakland missed on William Contreras could have had him but didn’t want him. Whoever is Oakland trade manager as really failed lately; Oakland used to trade stars get good prospects and play good. Not Lately

Was for Sean Murphy. At this point I’d take langeliers over Murphy anyway but I agree. A’s have gotten absolutely fleeced in these trades with the Braves.

Both Muller/Pache have enormous raw skills that ATL couldn’t wrangle. OAK had to know what they were getting themselves into, just like when they chose Esteury Ruiz with immense upside, rather than William Contreras, who was already a proven-MLer by the time of the trade. OAK FO were taking big swings with some of these prospects and whiffed on nearly all of them. Joey Estes is looking decent and I’m not sure we’ll see much of Ryan Cusick, while Tarnok is injured, and also a lot of upside, but unable to put it altogether.

Murphy is still an upgrade over Langeliers, but haven’t really seen that much with a combo of d’Arnaud being around to take starts from Murphy and some random injuries from Murphy that he never really had in OAK.

Murphy is a backup catcher. Murphy is the third best catcher in the trade and the Braves extended him and gave him more money. I don’t know why Braves fans still defend this horrible trade they clearly lost.

' src=

Can’t you get past the – getting onto the other team in the division that I don’t like – thing for a second and just look objectively for once. He’s hitting league average and is a good catcher. This despite his year being interrupted badly with injury. It’s been a tough year. But when, as a catcher, even in your tough year you are still league average offensively, you are pretty solid. Would they rather have Contreras this year-yeah. Would they going forward? Who knows? Regardless you speak so absolutely that they lost the trade after a year and a half. Who cares anyway. If they lost a trade they won ten other deals. Sale? Murphy is part time largely because Darnaud is hitting better and they can’t hit as a team. It’s not like he is losing playing time to James McCann.

He’s not hitting league average . What are talking about? He hasn’t been hurt for months. He’s been benched. Did you really say who knows if they would rather have a younger cheaper better Contreras going forward? I guess that’s the issue. Congrats on Chris Sale. I’m sure you think that is winning ten trades but it is not. Every team has bad trades I don’t know why Brave fans take it so personally with their GMS bad moves.

You don’t think that his line is league average for a catcher? Yes I said they would possibly rather have Murphy long term because catcher is the most important position on the field and he is, by all accounts, a very good catcher. He is better defensively than Darnaud but the two of them are great with pitchers. Some evidence would be the way every pitcher on their team practically is having a great year. Even in a down year, and using only metrics, he has a FAR better pop time and framing, and elite blocks above average. Contreras is well below average in everything defensively. But the big thing is the work with pitchers. They said they did the deal for defense. Who would know better about how Contreras works with pitchers-you or the team that developed him?

People have said Contreras has improved but the metrics at least have him as a pretty well below average catcher. So if he winds up a DH one day is he really worth as much as Murphy? I mean the Braves have 2 players in Ozuna and Soler who are that type of player. Ozuna’s great year aside they aren’t that rare. A good defensive catcher who can hit at least decently with upside to be an elite hitting catcher is clearly more valuable imo.

What are you talking about? The Braves report on him two years ago? The Brewers pitching staff seems to being doing pretty good with him and the Braves have lost trust in Murphy and hardly play him. I would go with the team that know better that made him a starter in the all star games judgement and not yours. And no that is not league line average for hitting.

First-he was an all-star on ATL too. Second that has nothing to do with defense. He had a monstrous OPS at that point. It is league average for a catcher. Surely. The Braves are merely starting Darnaud more because he’s having a nice year. They have 2 legit starting catchers. Same as when Darnaud was starting over Contreras much of the time. He is a good player. They need the offense right now. I agree MIL has pitched well. There is no passive aggressive behavior from Braves fans towards Mets fans. My favorite player is Nimmo. Idk why you feel the need to criticize “Braves fans” in every article. Lumping us all into a big gelatinous mass of supposed ignorance.

You continue to find ways to fault Contreras and put Murphy on a Pedestal. You are the exact example of what I’m talking about. The Braves are a great organization but you are still trying to act like this was a good move. I actually love going to Brave games. Go there more then Citi field to watch Mets/Braves. I get annoyed with the constant worship of your GM when he makes a ton of horrible moves. Most of your superstar Braves where there well before he arrived. And for the record Riley, Harris, and Acuna are all in my personal baseball card collections.

I don’t worship the GM. He needs to stop resigning Charlie Morton. He needs to cut Adam Duvall and admit defeat. But show me 3 GMs who made a better trade than the last year than Chris Sale for Vaughn Grissom. Show me a GM that did something like sign the SP era leader at the AS break for the price of a reliever (Lopez). A guy with 11 straight starts with 2 runs or fewer this year. Also show me a GM that the players actually don’t look at as a suit with a head. Everybody makes bad moves. But not everybody makes great moves. So the Mets (or anyone) could have theoretically had 2 of the best pitchers in the game this year for basically 10m or so combined (Red Sox ate sale money). He had no money to spend and got what amounted so far to two aces. Imagine if he had NYM money.

@Rishi — this is Morton’s hurrah. I can’t stand him by now, but he’s just now (this year) showing his wear. And luckily, he’s going to be a FA, not worth his price tag. He had $0 buyout in the past, making re-signing even more of a value. Considering the need for top-end SP and our unwillingness to pay for it, he really has been great. Now Charlie, go out there (tonight) and throw 4 IP with 6 BB and 4 jacks.

I agree those moves were good and worked out great. Im glad you pointed out the good and the bad. He is obviously a very good GM. I just get annoyed with the over the top cult following that acts like every move he makes is genius. The Braves are obviously a very well ran organization but fans just need to be realistic on both ends of the spectrum.

There were signs of it last year. He pitched astonishingly well in tough spots but was a walk machine and led the league in hit batters. He was what most would say…lucky. I do think there was an element of him bearing down and being in the right mindset at those times tho. He’s a wise pitcher. Many times he threw 75 pitches or more through like 3 innings but managed to go 5 with all kinds of baserunners and no runs. There were so many good options this offseason besides him. He makes 20m. Lorenzen, for instance, makes 4.5m. Jack Flaherty, for instance. Luis Severino. Those two have so much more upside than a 40 y/o and you could even have Lorenzen too and still not spend Charlie’s 20m.

He’s made more bad ones. Rosario signing in 21′ offseason and picking him back up this year. Odorizzi. Lucked out some on Ozuna. Jansen was a waste of money. Morton makes way too much. Duvall. He’s benefitted from the As being either imbecile-like or purposefully tanking the system. Some earlier deals I forget. I quit paying attention for a couple years. But like I said nobody is perfect. I credit the coaches and scouts and analytics department as much as him. But he signed many of them in fairness. I think he’s good at listening to people.

' src=

The A’s got the Braves to give up alot of value. The problem is they sent 99% of said value to the Brewers for Esteury Ruiz.

' src=

It’s almost like they’re trying to lose on purpose…

' src=

The Olson trade was okay but the rest were pretty grim, though it didn’t help that the entire league was aware the manager was being told to immediately dump every tradeable player making more than a couple million dollars.

Exactly…they had no leverage to make a trade. And while none of us knows what’s going on behind the scenes, I highly doubt the A’s have invested in their scouting/analytics departments much lately given they seem to have no intention of winning now or in the foreseeable future. Frankly, because they have no goals of winning, they’re not going to make trades for high-end prospects that they may have to pay down the road. Instead, they went for large quantities of cheap MLB-ready players with low upside.

' src=

I think the A’s will win more than the Astros in 2025

A’s are very close to competing.

' src=

They’re competing against the Mets tonight at around 7pm EST.

4 hours is pretty close I’d say.

Did you come up with that all by yourself?

And get off my lawn!

I say this as an A’s fan…no they’re not. They have no pitching. Their farm system mostly sucks except for some decent high floor hitters. They’re about to go play in 150 degree weather in a minor league stadium for god knows how many years. They have the worst owner in pro spots. He won’t pay anybody and nobody will want to go there.

Otherwise, it’s all good!

This is why they need taxpayer dollars, they’re too big to fail!

' src=

I don’t know about that. They’ll certainly win more then they have and will this year.

' src=

FJF and F David Forst!

' src=

Langaliers was for Olson. That’s why they then needed to trade for Murphy. Should a just resigned Freddie…

@Baseball Babe — You need to @CaseyClose for it to reach him. ATL had the 2nd-best offer (present day value), if believing reports.

Remember, they still had William Contreras. They still even had d’Arnaud and young-C Drake Baldwin is breaking out in AAA this year…so they viewed Langeliers as expendable, especially if they could land a proven Murphy.

' src=

In addition to the solid reasons DMC listed, Langelier signing w/Scott Boras shortly after the Braves drafted and signed him may have also played a role in the Braves willingness to deal him. The Braves were the only team in MLB that didn’t have a Boras represented player on their roster at the start of 2024. They still don’t. AA signs core players to team friendly extensions. Boras doesn’t operate in that manner w/his players.

I mean it was for Matt Olson. I do t think there was any other reason then that.

' src=

I agree Nashville. As a Braves fan I hate that they don’t go after the big names most the time. They HAVE to draft and develop well or they would be the A’s. Their payroll has improved significantly but I wonder how long these “long term core” long term signings will work. Hopefully everyone gets on the healthy train like Chris Sale lol. AA is pretty lucky but it’s not worked great this year.

' src=

MickeyTheMod..You have no sense of humor! I was not serious! Both trades were not that good for the Braves. Up until about a week ago before Olson got hot for a few games, Shea Langeliers had more homeruns than Olson and Murphy combined! Estes is pitching well lately, and the A’s just gave Pache away to the Phillies. Now he is with the Orioles. Don’t know why the Orioles needed another outfielder other than injuries. Update, now with Marlins! Alex Anthopolis has made some very questionable trades in the last couple years, especially the Kelenic move that ended up with multiple other trades and taking on around $25-30M in bad contracts! Chill!

@AL — HR?? You obviously overvalue HR yet very dismissive over Olson’s franchise-record 54 HR in ’23. Very odd. All those HR for Langeliers and still just an average OPS+.

Yes, let’s fail to mention the questionable Vaughn Grissom, as well! What was AA thinking giving up a can’t-miss prospect for Sale??

Vaughn Grissom for Chris Sale was not a trade! It was a robbery!

How about sending Murphy back to A’s for Rooker? Or throw in Elder for Rooker AND Miller!!??

' src=

How about sending you off to muteland?

He seemed to excel at the only metric I could reasonably do well at myself: BB%*

* Because my 60mph meatballs would get slaughtered consistently. I guess we have that in common too.

' src=

Maybe the A’s should just be prohibited from making trades with GM Alex Anthopoulus?

He’s fleeced us out of Josh Donaldson, Matt Chapman, Matt Olson, and Sean Murphy.

Those are fire sale trades. They rarely work out for the team doing the fire sale, especially when that organization has gutted its front office down to the studs.

' src=

Oakland A’s recent trades of their big stars have turned to mush — they seem to have failed completely in researching who to get.

' src=

Kind of feels like it’s purposeful. How can one GM be this bad with so many trades?

' src=

Milwaukee made out like Bandits on that deal.

' src=

Kept Stripling over Muller… I’m surprised

' src=

I know muller out of options were an issue but they couldve also just as easily let go one of their older, impending free agent pitchers. Muller sucks btw but early season did show some ability as a reliever before injury. McFarland and Alexander won’t be here next year anyways

Another feather in the cap of David Forst.

Shame, kid has the physical gift but must be something mental that he can’t get past. Really his best hope is to sign a minor league deal with the white sox and see if he can find magic there, cause getting DFA’d by the A’s is a pretty low point in ones career.

Also, A’s will never trade with the Braves again… 1, maybe two prospects in all the prospects we have sent over have done anything. Shea and Estes? And even then, like very mediocre at best?

The Oakland Athletics have designated relief pitcher Kyle Muller for assignment. He was acquired in 2022 in a trade with the Atlanta Braves, which involved sending Sean Murphy to the Braves and William Contreas to the Milwaukee Brewers. Muller was one of five players acquired in the trade.

A vital piece of the return that the #Athletics got from the #Braves in the Sean Murphy trade, now designated for assignment… https://t.co/EUxaVZk2bG — MLB Trade Rumors (@mlbtraderumors) August 13, 2024

Athletics Relief Pitcher Designated for Assignment

Muller’s inconsistencies.

When the A’s acquired Muller, he was recognized as a top prospect by the Braves. Muller used to be a starter and showed solid promise following pitching deep into games. Muller also earned himself the Gatorade Player of the Year award in 2015. Due to this, the A’s had faith in Muller, but unfortunately, in 2022, he recorded an ERA of 8.03. The 2023 season wasn’t revamped, with a 1-5 record and an ERA of 7.60. This season, his ERA has dropped to 4.22. Following his unsuccessful 2022 season, he was sent down to the minors. But being in Triple-A didn’t allow him to prosper. He sported a 7.26 ERA across 13 starts. The A’s continued to keep him in the reliever role in the majors as they had their hands tied.

He’s successfully improved his ERA this season, even with going on the IL with left shoulder tendinitis on May 30th. In addition, he had a promising walk rate of 5.1 %. But aside from this, he’s had his struggles with giving up home runs. As well, he needed much work to improve his velocity. The reason behind Muller’s designation, aside from his struggles, is also due to his out-of-options dilemma with his contract. But what had also attracted the A’s to Muller was that he has experience as a lefty. Overall, keeping him long-term was not something that the A’s could afford to do—especially considering that he hasn’t improved enough for them to consider him a strong enough piece in the bullpen. With Muller being DFA’d, starting pitcher Joe Boyle has been recalled, and Ross Stripling has taken over in the pen.

Jets’ will mcdonald making most of chances he craves to earn bigger role.

Jets second-year defensive end Will McDonald knows the assignment.

“Get more sacks,” McDonald said after the Jets beat the Commanders, 20-17 , Saturday. “I’ve got to get some sacks. That’s the only thing that’s on my mind. Just being that baller and impacting the game every time I’m out there.”

Of the players who are not fighting for roster spots, there may not be another Jet who has more riding on this training camp and preseason than McDonald.

Will McDonald

The Jets took him with the No. 15 overall pick in 2023, a pick that drew complaints from fans who wanted an offensive lineman or wide receiver at the spot.

McDonald played sparingly as a rookie but did show flashes of the ability that made him a first-round pick.

He finished the season with three sacks.

With Bryce Huff leaving for the Eagles in free agency and the Jets trading John Franklin-Myers to the Broncos, there is an opening for an edge rusher that McDonald can fill.

The team traded for Haason Reddick to help fill that opening too, but he is holding out, creating even more opportunity for McDonald .

On Saturday, McDonald played 12 snaps. He did not have a sack, but he did drill Commanders quarterback Jeff Driskel on one play after using his signature spin move to beat tackle Mason Brooks.

Will McDonald

McDonald ended up getting flagged on the play for roughing the passer, but it looked like a questionable call .

The official said McDonald landed on Driskel with his full body weight.

Even though it ended up in a penalty, the play showed just how explosive McDonald can be off the edge. McDonald is an athletic freak with the ability to bend around the edge.

The Jets wish he would have added more weight to his frame this offseason, but McDonald says he has gotten stronger.

“I’m bigger, stronger, faster,” McDonald said. “I’m better at play recognition. Last year, I was a rookie. I still was trying to do what I needed to do, but this offseason, I made sure that I did what I need to.”

The question entering Year 2 for the Jets and McDonald is how much he will see the field. Jets coach Robert Saleh and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich like to use a rotation on the defensive line.

Will McDonald at Jets practice on July 31, 2024.

Last season, the breakdown of snaps went like this: Jermaine Johnson 66 percent, Franklin-Myers 55 percent, Huff 42 percent, Micheal Clemons 33 percent and McDonald 16 percent.

Johnson and Reddick figure to be the top two edge rushers this season, but can McDonald get up to Huff’s level of playing time?

Many have talked about McDonald making a jump this season. He feels he just needs a chance.

“I don’t really think I need a leap; I just need some more opportunities,” McDonald said. “I’ve always been this type of player. Last year, we had a lot of good guys in the room, I just wasn’t able to get as much opportunities, but now this year, I’m hoping to get those opportunities more and just take advantage of those. People always say leap this and leap that, I don’t really think I needed to take a leap because for one, I wasn’t a bad player. I just needed more opportunities so I could take advantage of those.”

The Jets travel to Charlotte, N.C., this week for a joint practice Thursday with the Panthers before playing them in a preseason game on Saturday.

It will be another big week for McDonald.

The Jets posted video of his performance in a joint practice against the Commanders last week, highlighting how well he played.

McDonald now knows he needs to show that in a game.

“It was cool, but that’s practice,” McDonald said. “When it comes to game time, that’s when you really have to go crazy. When the game comes, that’s when you have to be a baller.”
