Case management nurses handle long- and short-term disability claims for patients. They collaborate with physicians, employers, and insurance companies to help facilitate communication and ensure compliance among all the parties involved.

Ultimately, their goal is to help coordinate treatment and funding so that a return-to-work goal can be established and met.

Since most of their work can be done over the phone or through email, case management is a perfect work-from-home position for skilled and experienced nurses who are familiar with the healthcare industry.

2. Insurance Claims 

Making the transition from caregiving to working as an insurance claims specialist can be more natural than you might think. And, working for a health insurance company can allow more job flexibility.

Health insurance companies need people with healthcare knowledge to examine and investigate claims to determine whether or not certain procedures are covered. They also work to decide how much money the insurance company is required to pay for each claim.

Healthcare professionals already have this knowledge, and nurses are also familiar with medical records, treatment plans, and other details insurance adjusters aren’t typically familiar with.

3. Telephone Triage Nurse

Busy medical facilities and doctors often run triage by telephone. This allows highly qualified nurses to speak with patients, assess their symptoms, and recommend the best course of action before they show up to receive healthcare services.

Triage nurses can often answer patient questions, preventing unnecessary visits and keeping other healthcare professionals and support staff focused on the patients in the clinic. 

The telephone triage system helps handle less urgent problems more efficiently so that resources are appropriately distributed. Tele-nurses can work at home and still contribute directly to patient care. They provide valuable medical advice to patients with a wide variety of problems.

Of course, you’d need nursing experience in a clinical setting before taking on this home nursing job. Some clinics hire both BSN and ADN nurses.

4. Nursing Informatics

This exciting new branch of healthcare uses technology to improve patient care and create a better healthcare system. Informatics works to find innovative intersections between technology, communication, and healthcare systems to move the entire industry forward.  Nursing informatics examples include innovations like telehealth, telemedicine, and electronic health records.

If you are interested in changing the system by developing and implementing new solutions, you may be able to use your nursing degree in health informatics. 

Because the field is constantly evolving and taking shape, there is plenty of room to grow, explore your interests, and help create your position. 

As a nursing informaticist , you could serve as a nursing consultant to give a nurse’s perspective on new technology systems. You could help build databases to track patient outcomes. You could even write computer programs to help other healthcare professionals better serve patients.

You’d need at least a bachelor’s degree, but most employers prefer nurses with master’s degrees. Increasingly, informaticists have Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees.

5. Call Center Nurse

While telephone triage and call center nurses are closely related, a call center position doesn’t require as much nursing experience.

A home-based call center nurse will be in charge of direct calls to the appropriate parties, but he or she won’t be responsible for direct patient care. 

Essentially, this is more of an administrative role than a telemedicine role, but medical and healthcare companies will give candidates with medical backgrounds the edge when it comes to hiring. 

Keep in mind that fewer responsibilities also mean lower pay.  

6. Freelance Nurse Writer

Medical writing is a challenging field that requires extensive knowledge of medical terminology and procedures along with strong writing skills.

Many nurses who enjoy writing have found freelancing to be ideal for remote work.

It also serves an important purpose: The medical field relies on a variety of well-researched materials that are used among professionals and published and distributed to the general public. 

Writers may be tasked with putting together promotional materials, journal articles, press releases, and much more.

Businesses today rely heavily on website content and online news stories to connect with potential customers and promote their goods and services. An experienced medical writer can be an essential part of a successful medical website, facility, or drug manufacturer.

7. Nurse Educator

Teaching isn’t for everyone, but as a  nurse educator , you could have a huge impact on the profession by helping make sure students enter the workforce armed with the skills and knowledge all nurses should have.

Institutions of higher education throughout the United States have busy nursing degree programs, but they also have different educational requirements for faculty members. Some community colleges may hire nurse educators who have only a bachelor’s degree, while others require master's degrees to teach.

Nurses who want to apply their experience in another profession may want to consider becoming a legal nurse consultant.

Clinical research is a great way for clinicians to help develop life-saving medications, treatments, and vaccines. They help develop and facilitate studies to provide information about new medical procedures and medications.

Some of the research-related tasks that a remote clinical research nurse performs may include:

When I started my nursing career, I envisioned myself working directly with patients in a hospital setting. But after a grueling year of working on the hospital floor, I decided to switch gears and try a desk job, specifically as a prior authorization nurse for the Texas Medicaid Program. In this medical insurance job, I approved nursing visits and medical equipment for Medicaid patients.

However, after a year and a half of being on the phone, I decided to make a lateral move within the Medicaid Program, and I became a surveillance and utilization review nurse, where I reviewed medical records from doctors and clinics to see if the services billed were medically necessary.

Sadly, I didn’t get to work from home in these positions, but luckily for you, with new technological advances, many of these medical insurance jobs can be done from home! 

And don’t worry, you don’t need to be a  nurse  to work in the insurance field.

My neighbor (who is not a nurse) works from home for an insurance company overseeing workers’ compensation claims. There are tons of work from home insurance jobs in medical coding and billing , customer service, insurance agents, underwriters, fraud and abuse, sales, HR, legal, and many other types of insurance professionals. 

If you’re looking for a new job in the insurance industry, here are some places to find work from home insurance jobs.

Home and Auto Insurance Jobs and Hiring Companies

Protecting the assets of drivers and homeowners is the key focus of the insurance industry. Many states require owners to insure their property to protect it from liability, damage, accidents, theft, or fire. There are many work from home insurance jobs in the home and auto insurance industries, and many with excellent benefits and perks.

1. Allstate Insurance Company

Allstate offers consumers a wide variety of protection products, including home, auto, renters, life, and business insurance. This also means they have many remote job openings for US-based individuals.

Most companies say that they are equal-opportunity employers and do not discriminate, but we all know that ageism does exist. You can check reviews on Glassdoor.com to see which companies really follow through on these promises. You can also write your resume in a way that doesn’t disclose how old you are by excluding graduation dates, using a Gmail email address, and not including all of your work history.

MALE SPEAKING ON SCREEN: Just talking about something is not enough. I think anything, again, worth doing, takes action that is needed behind it, and that action has to be seen by others in order for others to come along.

What Research Says About Being a Stay-at-Home Parent

Ask people what they think about  stay-at-home moms  (SAHMs) and stay-at-home parents in general, and you'll likely get a variety of answers. Some might say they've got it easy, or that life at home with the kids would be boring. Some might think they're lazy or not contributing much to society. Others contend that stay-at-home parents are making the best decision of their lives and that they're making a noble, worthwhile sacrifice to stay home and nurture their kids day in and day out.

If you're contemplating whether or not to be a stay-at-home parent, what matters most is what works best for your family. So, first and foremost, consider your personal beliefs, priorities, finances, and lifestyle. However, there is also a wealth of research on the subject that you can consult when making your decision. The findings on life as a stay-at-home parent may surprise you.

Pros and Cons of Staying at Home

There are, of course, many personal reasons for or against staying home with your kids. Benefits may include more opportunities for quality time with your children and having more direction over their learning and development. You may not want to miss a minute of their childhoods. You also might not trust others to care for your little loves. Drawbacks include the big hit to your family's income and the trajectory of your career as well as the big change to your lifestyle.

While there is no right or wrong answer, this research may help inform your choice. Remember that each of these benefits and drawbacks may or may not apply to you. There are many different factors, such as budget, lifestyle, priorities, social support, relationship status, spousal involvement, and your kids' specific needs, to consider before making your final decision.

Evidence-Based Benefits of Being a Stay-At-Home-Parent

There are many reasons that parents choose to stay at home with their children. Studies have shown that many people think this is the best option for kids when financially plausible. According to a Pew Research Center study, about 18% of American parents stayed home with their children in 2021.

According to Pew Research Center's Social and Demographic Trends, 60% of Americans say a child is better off with at least one parent at home. While 35% of responders said that kids are just as well off with both parents working outside the home.

Benefits for Children of Stay-at-Home-Parents

A 2014 study found that the benefits of having a parent at home extend beyond the early years of a child's life. The study measured the educational performance of 68,000 children. Researchers found an increase in school performance to high school-aged children. However, the biggest educational impact was on kids ages 6 and 7.

Most  homeschooled students  also have an at-home parent instructing them. A compilation of studies provided by the National Home Education Research Institute supports the benefits of a parent at home for educational reasons. Some research has found homeschoolers generally score 15 to 30 percentile points above public school students on standardized tests and achieve above-average scores on the ACT and SATs.

Regardless of whether parents stay home or work outside the home, research shows that parent involvement in schools makes a difference in children's academic performance and how long they stay in school.  Some kids with learning differences and/or special needs may do better in a school (vs. homeschooling) to access any required services .

Decreased Stress and Aggression in Kids

Some studies link childcare with increased behavioral problems and suggest that being at home with your children offers benefits to their development compared with them being in  being in childcare  full-time.  This may be reassuring news for stay-at-home parents knee-deep in diapers and temper tantrums.

Studies have found that children who spend a large amount of their day in daycare experience high stress levels, particularly at times of transition, like drop-off and pick-up.

Subsequent studies also showed higher levels of stress in children in childcare settings compared with those who are cared for at home. But that doesn't mean you have to keep your children with you every minute until they're ready to go to school. Look for a nanny or babysitting co-op that allows your kids to play with others while giving you some time alone.

Greater Control of Children's Upbringing

The ability to directly protect, spend time with, and nurture their children each day is often cited as a primary benefit of not working outside the home. Studies show that some parents stay home specifically to have greater first-hand control over the influences their child is exposed to. Others simply see it as their duty to be the one who provides daily care to their little ones.

More Parents Want to Stay Home

According to the Pew Research Center, more people are becoming stay-at-home parents—and 60% of Americans believe that choice is best for children. The number of stay-at-home parents jumped from a low of 23% in 1999 to 29% in less than 15 years. However, today's rates don't match those of the 1970s and earlier when around 50% of women (and very few men) were stay-at-home parents.

While the number of men taking on this role is far lower than that of women (around 210,000 compared with over 5.2 million), the rate of men becoming stay-at-home dads is on an upswing, too. Between 2010 and 2014, the prevalence of men choosing to stay home increased by 37%.

Downsides of Being a Stay-at-Home Parent

Regardless of the increasing numbers and some important benefits, a decision to quit your job to become a stay-at-home parent shouldn't be made out of guilt or peer pressure. While there are many great reasons to be a stay-at-home parent, it's not necessarily right or beneficial (or financially plausible) for everyone. For some families, the drawbacks significantly outweigh any positives.

Some People Miss Working

Research shows that many stay-at-home parents miss working outside the home and think about  going back to work  someday.  It can be tough to leave behind the tangible rewards and results of a job, especially one you enjoyed and were good at.

If you stay home when your kids are little but plan to return to the workforce, you can take some steps to bridge that employment gap, such as taking classes, earning licenses or certificates that enhance your resume, or even taking a part-time job.  You might also consider at-home business opportunities as well as  remote jobs  that let you stay home while also earning money and reclaiming some of what you missed about your career.

Costs to Your Career and Wallet

The decision to stay at home with your kids means giving up income. Research shows that stay-at-home parents must contend with lost wages now and decreased wages when returning to work. This "wage penalty" often amounts to 40% less in earned income over time.

There is also a big hit to the stay-at-home parent's career trajectory. Some parents can regain their previous work roles upon reentering the workforce, while others struggle to get a foothold professionally after taking time off.

The direct impact on your family's finances will depend on your personal earning potential, skills, and career choices—as well as the income of your partner if you have one. However, studies show that mothers who reenter work after having children experience between a 5% and 10% pay gap compared with their childless peers. This is in addition to the gender pay gap.

Adverse Impacts on Physical and Mental Health

Studies show that stay-at-home parents experience poorer physical and mental health compared with parents who work outside the home. Effects include higher rates of mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, as well as higher rates of chronic illness. A 2012 Gallup poll surveyed 60,000 women including women with no children, working moms, and stay-at-home moms who were or were not looking for work, and found more negative feelings among SAHMs. There are likely several reasons for this, including experiencing more parental and financial stress. Working parents tend to have access to more robust health insurance plans than stay-at-home parents. They also tend to benefit from greater self-worth, personal control over their life, economic security, and more dynamic socio-economic support.

However, it's worth noting that significant research shows that whether they work outside the home or not, parents generally are less happy than their childless counterparts.  Of course, the joy you get from parenting (and staying home with the kids) is likely to be highly individual.

More Social Isolation

A 2015 study found that many moms are spending lots of time with their kids, more so than in years past. Researchers believe this extra kid-focus results in a higher potential for social isolation. Interestingly, the research found no scientifically proven difference in outcomes for the children with this additional parental attention.

Some stay-at-home parents may feel isolated or undervalued by what some call the " mommy wars, " which pit parents against each other. This social dynamic can create perceived judgments or pressures that leave some stay-at-home parents feeling like they're not respected as worthy members of society. On the flip side, some working parents may feel criticized for not spending as much time with their children. Both groups can end up feeling socially isolated.

A 2021 study found that around a third of all parents experience loneliness. That's why it's so important for all parents (whether they stay at home or work outside the home) to find the right balance of social activities, exercise, sleep, hobbies, and self-care. Additionally, it's helpful to make the most of your family time, including  creating gadget-free zones  and planning fun activities you can all enjoy.

It's also key to take care of your own emotional well-being and let your children spend some time away from you. Whether it's a date night with your spouse or scheduling a day off so you can have some alone time, you're not going to shortchange your child because you didn't spend every minute with them. Giving yourself parenting breaks and opportunities to socialize is important for your well-being, particularly during times of stress.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

SSI provides payments to adults and children who have disabilities or blindness.

SSI helps families with limited income and resources support their children with mental or physical disabilities.

You can learn more on Social Security’s SSI for Children page. For more information about services and supports for SSI transition-aged youths (ages 14 to 17), visit the Youth Resources page.

Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS)

A PASS allows a person who is 15 years or older and receives SSI to set aside income and resources to meet an employment goal. Social Security must approve the plan. Funds set aside may be used for education, training, equipment (such as a vehicle or computer), and transportation. Check out the PASS page for more information.

In most states, a child receiving SSI also qualifies for Medicaid. In addition to health care, Medicaid may pay for residential, day, and supported employment programs. You can find the Medicaid While Working State Threshold Amounts for people with disabilities on Social Security’s website .

Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

CHIP provides comprehensive health coverage to people under age 19 who can’t afford private insurance but whose incomes are too high for Medicaid. The program is funded through Medicaid and other state and federal programs.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

The TANF program provides financial assistance and related support to help families meet their basic needs. State-administered programs include child care assistance, job preparation, and work assistance. Programs are not limited to families raising a child with a disability. Eligibility requirements and monthly cash assistance vary by state.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

SNAP , formerly known as food stamps, helps people with limited income buy nutritious food. Although SNAP is a federal program, state agencies run the program through local offices. You may be eligible to receive SNAP benefits if you meet certain income and resource requirements. SNAP is not limited to people with disabilities, but there are specific eligibility provisions for people with special needs. Check out Social Security’s blog post on how to apply for SNAP and SSI.

Thank you so much for fixing my ability to make comments. This SS blog is so informative. Our Social Security Administration and SS benefits are so extremely beneficial, and necessary, I do hope we keep improving it and making the fund more stable.

I hope we can have some type of partnerships between our government and private funds setup so care and treatment can be provided that really allows disabled children to function and enjoy their lives, the best they can.

I hope we can get many more private groups to help pay for medical expensives where the expenses are too probibitive for parents to pay for. We do need to stop spending SS money and stop spending our tax money. People who have the children should know when they have children that it will be their responsibility to care for their own children.

What Kamala Harris has said so far on key issues in her campaign

As she ramps up her nascent presidential campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris is revealing how she will address the key issues facing the nation.

In speeches and rallies, she has voiced support for continuing many of President Joe Biden’s measures, such as lowering drug costs , forgiving student loan debt and eliminating so-called junk fees. But Harris has made it clear that she has her own views on some key matters, particularly Israel’s treatment of Gazans in its war with Hamas.

In a departure from her presidential run in 2020, the Harris campaign has confirmed that she’s moved away from many of her more progressive stances, such as her interest in a single-payer health insurance system and a ban on fracking.

Harris is also expected to put her own stamp and style on matters ranging from abortion to the economy to immigration, as she aims to walk a fine line of taking credit for the administration’s accomplishments while not being jointly blamed by voters for its shortcomings.

Her early presidential campaign speeches have offered insights into her priorities, though she’s mainly voiced general talking points and has yet to release more nuanced plans. Like Biden, she intends to contrast her vision for America with that of former President Donald Trump. ( See Trump’s campaign promises here .)

“In this moment, I believe we face a choice between two different visions for our nation: one focused on the future, the other focused on the past,” she told members of the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta at an event in Indianapolis in late July. “And with your support, I am fighting for our nation’s future.”

Here’s what we know about Harris’ views:

Harris took on the lead role of championing abortion rights for the administration after Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022. This past January, she started a “ reproductive freedoms tour ” to multiple states, including a stop in Minnesota thought to be the first by a sitting US president or vice president at an abortion clinic .

On abortion access, Harris embraced more progressive policies than Biden in the 2020 campaign, as a candidate criticizing his previous support for the Hyde Amendment , a measure that blocks federal funds from being used for most abortions.

Policy experts suggested that although Harris’ current policies on abortion and reproductive rights may not differ significantly from Biden’s, as a result of her national tour and her own focus on maternal health , she may be a stronger messenger.

High prices are a top concern for many Americans who are struggling to afford the cost of living after a spell of steep inflation. Many voters give Biden poor marks for his handling of the economy, and Harris may also face their wrath.

In her early campaign speeches, Harris has echoed many of the same themes as Biden, saying she wants to give Americans more opportunities to get ahead. She’s particularly concerned about making care – health care, child care, elder care and family leave – more affordable and available.

Harris promised at a late July rally to continue the Biden administration’s drive to eliminate so-called “junk fees” and to fully disclose all charges, such as for events, lodging and car rentals. In early August, the administration proposed a rule that would ban airlines from charging parents extra fees to have their kids sit next to them.

On day one, I will take on price gouging and bring down costs. We will ban more of those hidden fees and surprise late charges that banks and other companies use to pad their profits.”

Since becoming vice president, Harris has taken more moderate positions, but a look at her 2020 campaign promises reveals a more progressive bent than Biden.

As a senator and 2020 presidential candidate, Harris proposed providing middle-class and working families with a refundable tax credit of up to $6,000 a year (per couple) to help keep up with living expenses. Titled the LIFT the Middle Class Act, or Livable Incomes for Families Today, the measure would have cost at the time an estimated $3 trillion over 10 years.

Unlike a typical tax credit, the bill would allow taxpayers to receive the benefit – up to $500 – on a monthly basis so families don’t have to turn to payday loans with very high interest rates.

As a presidential candidate, Harris also advocated for raising the corporate income tax rate to 35%, where it was before the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that Trump and congressional Republicans pushed through Congress reduced the rate to 21%. That’s higher than the 28% Biden has proposed.

Affordable housing was also on Harris’ radar. As a senator, she introduced the Rent Relief Act, which would establish a refundable tax credit for renters who annually spend more than 30% of their gross income on rent and utilities. The amount of the credit would range from 25% to 100% of the excess rent, depending on the renter’s income.

Harris called housing a human right and said in a 2019 news release on the bill that every American deserves to have basic security and dignity in their own home.

Consumer debt

Hefty debt loads, which weigh on people’s finances and hurt their ability to buy homes, get car loans or start small businesses, are also an area of interest to Harris.

As vice president, she has promoted the Biden administration’s initiatives on student debt, which have so far forgiven more than $168 billion for nearly 4.8 million borrowers . In mid-July, Harris said in a post on X that “nearly 950,000 public servants have benefitted” from student debt forgiveness, compared with only 7,000 when Biden was inaugurated.

A potential Harris administration could keep that momentum going – though some of Biden’s efforts have gotten tangled up in litigation, such as a program aimed at cutting monthly student loan payments for roughly 3 million borrowers enrolled in a repayment plan the administration implemented last year.

The vice president has also been a leader in the White House efforts to ban medical debt from credit reports, noting that those with medical debt are no less likely to repay a loan than those who don’t have unpaid medical bills.

In a late July statement praising North Carolina’s move to relieve the medical debt of about 2 million residents, Harris said that she is “committed to continuing to relieve the burden of medical debt and creating a future where every person has the opportunity to build wealth and thrive.”

Health care

Harris, who has had shifting stances on health care in the past, confirmed in late July through her campaign that she no longer supports a single-payer health care system .

During her 2020 campaign, Harris advocated for shifting the US to a government-backed health insurance system but stopped short of wanting to completely eliminate private insurance.

The measure called for transitioning to a Medicare-for-All-type system over 10 years but continuing to allow private insurance companies to offer Medicare plans.

The proposal would not have raised taxes on the middle class to pay for the coverage expansion. Instead, it would raise the needed funds by taxing Wall Street trades and transactions and changing the taxation of offshore corporate income.

When it comes to reducing drug costs, Harris previously proposed allowing the federal government to set “a fair price” for any drug sold at a cheaper price in any economically comparable country, including Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Japan or Australia. If manufacturers were found to be price gouging, the government could import their drugs from abroad or, in egregious cases, use its existing but never-used “march-in” authority to license a drug company’s patent to a rival that would produce the medication at a lower cost.

Harris has been a champion on climate and environmental justice for decades. As California’s attorney general, Harris sued big oil companies like BP and ConocoPhillips, and investigated Exxon Mobil for its role in climate change disinformation. While in the Senate, she sponsored the Green New Deal resolution.

During her 2020 campaign, she enthusiastically supported a ban on fracking — but a Harris campaign official said in late July that she no longer supports such a ban.

Fracking is the process of using liquid to free natural gas from rock formations – and the primary mode for extracting gas for energy in battleground Pennsylvania. During a September 2019 climate crisis town hall hosted by CNN, she said she would start “with what we can do on Day 1 around public lands.” She walked that back later when she became Biden’s running mate.

Biden has been the most pro-climate president in history, and climate advocates find Harris to be an exciting candidate in her own right. Democrats and climate activists are planning to campaign on the stark contrasts between Harris and Trump , who vowed to push America decisively back to fossil fuels, promising to unwind Biden’s climate and clean energy legacy and pull America out of its global climate commitments.

If elected, one of the biggest climate goals Harris would have to craft early in her administration is how much the US would reduce its climate pollution by 2035 – a requirement of the Paris climate agreement .

Immigration

Harris has quickly started trying to counter Trump’s attacks on her immigration record.

Her campaign released a video in late July citing Harris’ support for increasing the number of Border Patrol agents and Trump’s successful push to scuttle a bipartisan immigration deal that included some of the toughest border security measures in recent memory.

The vice president has changed her position on border control since her 2020 campaign, when she suggested that Democrats needed to “critically examine” the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, after being asked whether she sided with those in the party arguing to abolish the department.

In June of this year, the White House announced a crackdown on asylum claims meant to continue reducing crossings at the US-Mexico border – a policy that Harris’ campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, indicated in late July to CBS News would continue under a Harris administration.

Trump’s attacks stem from Biden having tasked Harris with overseeing diplomatic efforts in Central America in March 2021. While Harris focused on long-term fixes, the Department of Homeland Security remained responsible for overseeing border security.

She has only occasionally talked about her efforts as the situation along the US-Mexico border became a political vulnerability for Biden. But she put her own stamp on the administration’s efforts, engaging the private sector.

Harris pulled together the Partnership for Central America, which has acted as a liaison between companies and the US government. Her team and the partnership are closely coordinating on initiatives that have led to job creation in the region. Harris has also engaged directly with foreign leaders in the region.

Experts credit Harris’ ability to secure private-sector investments as her most visible action in the region to date but have cautioned about the long-term durability of those investments.

Israel-Hamas

The Israel-Hamas war is the most fraught foreign policy issue facing the country and has spurred a multitude of protests around the US since it began in October.

After meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in late July, Harris gave a forceful and notable speech about the situation in Gaza.

We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering. And I will not be silent.”

Harris echoed Biden’s repeated comments about the “ironclad support” and “unwavering commitment” to Israel. The country has a right to defend itself, she said, while noting, “how it does so, matters.”

However, the empathy she expressed regarding the Palestinian plight and suffering was far more forceful than what Biden has said on the matter in recent months. Harris mentioned twice the “serious concern” she expressed to Netanyahu about the civilian deaths in Gaza, the humanitarian situation and destruction she called “catastrophic” and “devastating.”

She went on to describe “the images of dead children and desperate hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third or fourth time.”

Harris emphasized the need to get the Israeli hostages back from Hamas captivity, naming the eight Israeli-American hostages – three of whom have been killed.

But when describing the ceasefire deal in the works, she didn’t highlight the hostage for prisoner exchange or aid to be let into Gaza. Instead, she singled out the fact that the deal stipulates the withdrawal by the Israeli military from populated areas in the first phase before withdrawing “entirely” from Gaza before “a permanent end to the hostilities.”

Harris didn’t preside over Netanyahu’s speech to Congress in late July, instead choosing to stick with a prescheduled trip to a sorority event in Indiana.

Harris is committed to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, having met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at least six times and announcing last month $1.5 billion for energy assistance, humanitarian needs and other aid for the war-torn country.

At the Munich Security Conference earlier this year, Harris said: “I will make clear President Joe Biden and I stand with Ukraine. In partnership with supportive, bipartisan majorities in both houses of the United States Congress, we will work to secure critical weapons and resources that Ukraine so badly needs. And let me be clear: The failure to do so would be a gift to Vladimir Putin.”

More broadly, NATO is central to our approach to global security. For President Biden and me, our sacred commitment to NATO remains ironclad. And I do believe, as I have said before, NATO is the greatest military alliance the world has ever known.”

Police funding

The Harris campaign has also walked back the “defund the police” sentiment that Harris voiced in 2020. What she meant is she supports being “tough and smart on crime,” Mitch Landrieu, national co-chair for the Harris campaign and former mayor of New Orleans, told CNN’s Pamela Brown in late July.

In the midst of nationwide 2020 protests sparked by George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer, Harris voiced support for the “defund the police” movement, which argues for redirecting funds from law enforcement to social services. Throughout that summer, Harris supported the movement and called for demilitarizing police departments.

Democrats largely backed away from calls to defund the police after Republicans attempted to tie the movement to increases in crime during the 2022 midterm elections.

Biggest prisoner swap since the Cold War could be underway, movements suggest

MOSCOW, July 31 (Reuters) ‒ Signs of a major prisoner exchange between Russia and Belarus on one side and the United States, Germany, Slovenia and Britain on the other multiplied on Wednesday but there was no official confirmation of what may be the biggest swap since the Cold War.

Paul Whelan, a former U.S. marine , and Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian-British dissident, both jailed in Russia, disappeared from view on Wednesday, their lawyers said, after at least seven Russian dissidents were unexpectedly moved from their prisons in recent days.

Online Russian media outlet "Agenstvo" reported that at least six special Russian government planes had flown to and from the regions where their prisons were located. Reuters could not immediately confirm that.

Meanwhile, a lawyer for Alexander Vinnik, a Russian man held in the United States, declined to confirm the whereabouts of his client to the state RIA news agency "until the exchange takes place." But the lawyer, Arkady Bukh, was quoted by RIA as saying he'd been told by lawyers representing people imprisoned in Russia that they were "en route."

Shrouded in secrecy

RIA also reported that four Russians jailed in the United States had disappeared from a database of prisoners operated by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons. It named them as Vinnik, Maxim Marchenko, Vadim Konoshchenko and Vladislav Klyushin.

The U.S. is also holding at least two other Russian nationals, Vladimir Dunaev and Roman Seleznev, convicted of serious cybercrimes, who could also figure.

The Kremlin has declined to say whether an exchange is looming as has Russia's embassy in Washington, and there has been no comment from Western countries. Such exchanges are typically shrouded in secrecy until they happen.

Dissidents inside Russia whose supporters say they have been told that they have been suddenly moved in recent days include  opposition politician Ilya Yashin ,  human rights activist Oleg Orlov  and Daniil Krinari, who was convicted of secretly cooperating with foreign governments.

Others to have abruptly gone missing in the prison system include German-Russian citizen Kevin Lik, convicted of treason, opposition activists Liliya Chanysheva and Ksenia Fadeeva, and  anti-war artist Sasha Skochilenko .

Ivan Pavlov, a prominent Russian human rights lawyer now living in Prague, said the disappearance of so many people with similar profiles suggested the authorities were gathering them, probably in Moscow, for the exchange.

He said President Vladimir Putin would need to pardon them before their exchange, a necessary formality.

In December 2022, Russia traded basketball star Brittney Griner , sentenced to nine years for having vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage, for arms dealer Viktor Bout, serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S.

The  biggest prisoner swap since the Cold War  took place in 2010, involving 14 people in total.

West sees detainees as political prisoners

In the West, the dissidents are seen by governments and activists as wrongfully detained political prisoners. All have, for different reasons, been designated by Moscow as dangerous extremists.

The exchange is also expected to include two journalists.

On July 19, American journalist Evan Gershkovich  was convicted unusually swiftly on espionage charges that he denies. He was handed 16 years in jail and Russia has already confirmed talks about his possible exchange.

Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist for U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, was also  convicted in unusual haste in a secret trial the same day and sentenced to 6-1/2 years, accused of spreading false information about the Russian army. She denies wrongdoing.

Other U.S. nationals  behind bars in Russia include former schoolteacher Marc Fogel , convicted in 2022 for possessing marijuana, which he said he used for medical reasons.

In Belarus, meanwhile, President Alexander Lukashenko, a close Putin ally, on Tuesday pardoned Rico Krieger, a German sentenced to death on terrorism charges, again with unusual haste and state media coverage.

Among those Moscow has signalled it wants is Vadim Krasikov, a Russian serving life in Germany for murdering a former Chechen militant.

A Slovenian court on Wednesday sentenced two Russians to time served for espionage and using fake identities, and said they would be deported, the state news agency STA reported, a move a Slovenian TV channel said was part of the wider exchange.

Reuters could not independently confirm that.

Equity release refers to taking money out of your home without having to sell the property. You can take the money you release as a lump sum or in several smaller amounts.

There are two ways to do this:

  • Lifetime mortgage : This is the most common type and is a long-term loan secured against the value of your property. You borrow a cash lump sum and then choose to make repayments – -there is no requirement to pay it back monthly and you can just let the interest build up. The loan and the built-up interest must be paid back when the borrower dies or when they need to move into long-term care;
  • Home reversion : You sell a part or all of your home to a provider in return for a lump sum or regular payments. You have the right to continue living in the property until you die and the reversion company then gets a share of the proceeds when your home is sold.

To be eligible for equity release you must :

  • Be at least 55;
  • Own a home in the UK and it must be your main residence;
  • Have to meet a minimum property value – usually it's £75,000.

Richard Dana, founder and CEO of the family mortgage specialist Tembo , says the big benefit of equity release is it allows you to remain in the home you want to live in for the rest of your life without any risk of it getting repossessed.

It also allows you to "get access to cash where there might not be any other options".

"If people want to stay in their home but they want to repay an outstanding mortgage or they need some money for their retirement, they want to boost their retirement funds, that is the main benefit," he says.

But equity release comes with many pitfalls that need to be taken into consideration.

Mr Dana says while there is "a lot of regulation around it", it is "really expensive - particularly now".

"Unless you have to do it in the current environment, it's very expensive and it means the value of your assets that you might leave to your loved ones is going to go down a lot more. So you are going to be paying a lot more interest than you would have been," he says.

He says people must seek independent advice, speak with family and consider all options.

"Speak to not just an equity release broker but a mortgage broker - look at different options available to you. Depending on what you need the money for, you might be able to find alternative solutions, for example you can downsize."

Caroline Fletcher-Shaw, equity release legal expert at  Wilkin Chapman Solicitors , says that as well as reducing your estate, and therefore any inheritance you want to leave, it could also impact state benefits, as your income may be higher.

She says equity release "tends to have a higher interest rate than other products".

Property finance expert Dr Alla Koblyakova warns borrowers are "practically losing their houses".

She notes that figures show 38% are using equity release for unsecured debt repayment which means "those people are in need".

"It's a good product  to improve their lifestyle but the problem is how you spend the money," Dr Koblyakova says.

"If you are just paying existing debts that means you are losing your house and being charged such high interest rates. So you are having one debt to cover another debt which is expensive.

"I would suggest thinking 100 times before going for that sort of loan. If you can survive without that loan under the current climate I would suggest waiting until at least rates go down because then you would have less losses."

What advice would you give to someone being pressured into equity release?

"I think that would be an awful situation. Reputable companies shouldn't be going out there pressuring people to do equity release," Mrs Fletcher-Shaw says.

"If individuals are approached, they need to have the confidence to take that step back until they've sought professional advice.

"Financial advisers are key - they are going to be the ones that can really help individuals and understand their circumstances and whether an equity release would benefit them."

Dr Koblyakova warns: "As soon as someone is feeling pushed it means there is something wrong because a fair lender would never push anyone. They would explain in detail, trying to advertise the product but definitely not pushing the product."

One more thing to think about - inheritance tax

Mark Ashbridge, co-founder and managing director o f Ashbridge Partners , a finance and mortgage advisory firm, says there are possible inheritance tax planning opportunities with equity release.

"Inheritance tax is charged on the value of your assets at death - if you have released equity from your home and handed on the monies to the next generation that survive for the next seven years, then you have taken that out of your estate," he says.

"That can be quite an efficient planning tool because you can remain in your own home and you are not needing to service that interest."

It can also serve as a "means of assessing capital", he says.

However, he notes he has examples where it is more appropriate for the client to remain within the conventional mortgage market.

"Either because they don't want the loan for a long period of time, certainly not until their death, and so it makes sense to avoid the early repayment charges that could come with it."

On Monday, Rachel Reeves, the new Labour chancellor, said the Treasury had identified a "forecast overspend" for this year of £21.9bn.

As a consequence, she announced cuts worth £5.5bn this year, rising to £8.1bn next year.

The measures impacting your personal finances include: 

  • Winter fuel payments will be scrapped for around 10 million pensioners - those not receiving means-tested benefits;
  • A £86,000 lifetime cap on social care costs, due to start from October 2025, has been postponed. There is currently no cap;
  • The manifesto pledge to charge 20% VAT on private school fees will kick in from January 2025;
  • The Labour plan to replace the non-dom tax status will be implemented from April 2025;
  • The windfall tax on the profits of energy and gas companies will rise 3%, to 38%, from November;
  • Ms Reeves also hinted at potential tax rises - or "difficult decisions" - in her October budget, though not income tax, national insurance or VAT.

Later in the week she was more explicit on tax.

"I think that we will have to increase taxes in the budget," the chancellor told The News Agents podcast.

That budget will take place on 30 October.

We also learned that:

  • The chancellor had accepted advisory recommendations to give most NHS workers, teachers and members of the armed forces above-inflation pay rises of 5.5-6%;
  • The government has offered striking junior doctors in England a pay deal - over two years - of 22%.

On Thursday, the Bank of England cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point to 5%.

The Bank's nine-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted five to four to reduce borrowing costs, bringing to an end the joint-longest plateau for rates since the Bank was granted independence in 1997.

Lower interest rates will instantly be reflected in many savings accounts and floating rate mortgages (variable and tracker), though those selling fixed rate mortgages had long ago reflected the likelihood of lower rates.

The Bank's decision came after the consumer price index rate of inflation  dropped to 2%  - the MPC's target.

Some readers contrasted the move with pay rises being offered to junior doctors and other public sector workers - which reportedly total £9bn.

How can they possibly justify taking money out of pensioners' pockets for an alleged "black hole" of finances when they give £9bn to junior doctors [editor's note: the £9bn figure is said to be across the public sector, not just doctors]. Surely the rest of the public sector is now within their rights to strike for a huge pay rise? Sam

Morrisons has raised the temperature in some of its supermarket freezers by 3C.

The change is part of a trial to cut carbon emissions, the supermarket chain said.

But it insisted there would be no effect on food safety.

The current industry standard of setting freezers at -18C was set almost 100 years ago and has not been updated since, despite improvements in refrigeration technology, the grocer said.

Freezers in 10 stores across the country have been changed, taking into account supply routes and the weather, with plans to roll out the temperature change to other outlets.

Cosmetics company Morphe has reportedly closed all its standalone stores in the UK.

It's changing its focus to wholesale and online. 

All seven of its shops were closed on Wednesday, with 73 employees made redundant, Retail Gazette reported.

It still apparently has make-up counters in Boots, Superdrug, Selfridges, H Beauty and Flannels.

A spokesperson from Forma Brands, Morphe's parent company, told Retail Gazette its stores in Europe had faced "disproportionately high store rent obligations".

They added: "We have therefore made the difficult decision to close our seven UK and one Amsterdam retail locations. 

"This move aligns with our strategy to prioritise and expand our successful wholesale and e-commerce operations, similar to our model in the US."

Co-op is adding bakery items to its meal deal range.

A trial will run for 12 weeks in stores across the country, with bakery lines classed as a side or a snack.

They'll include croissants, almond Danish pastries, and a cinnamon cruffin - a croissant/muffin hybrid.

The bakery lines can be included in both standard and premium meal deals, alongside a main and a drink, costing £4 and £5.50 respectively. 

Co-op members can get a standard meal deal for £3.50 and the premium one for £5.

"Our latest offer will be available across all our delicious loose bakery items, providing an even wider choice of options to appeal to shoppers," said commercial buying manager Lyndsey Thornton.

A very nasty summer sell-off has been under way now in stock markets around the world for the last 48 hours - and nervous investors got another reason to carry on selling today.

The US non-farm payroll figures – essentially a measure of how many jobs were added to the US economy last month and probably the single most-watched piece of economic data in financial markets – came in much lower than expected for July.

Some 114,000 jobs were created in the US economy during the month. That was significantly lower than the 175,000 jobs that Wall Street had expected to see created. It was the weakest figure since December last year and the second weakest since March 2020 – when the pandemic was just taking off in the West.

The June number was also revised lower from the previously healthy looking 206,000 to 179,000.

The figures, when taken alongside the number of people entering the workforce, mean the unemployment rate in the US in July rose to 4.3%. That again was worse than the 4.1% pencilled in by Wall Street.

And they have intensified fears that the world's biggest economy may be heading for a recession.

Those fears had already started to swirl when, on Wednesday evening, the US Federal Reserve declined to cut interest rates from the 5.25%-5.5% range at which they have been since July last year – only for some figures the following day pointing to a contraction in US manufacturing activity during July.

That had already put the skids under US equities even before the jobs data. All of the main US stock indices fell on Thursday – with the S&P 500, the most important index, falling by 2.5% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining by 1.9%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq slumped by 3.3% and the Russell 2000, the main index of smaller US companies, slid by 3%.

Those falls were added to this afternoon – putting the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq on course for a third consecutive weekly fall. The index, which was also weighed down by some mixed trading updates from the big tech companies , is now at a level last seen in May and is officially in "correction" territory.

In other words, it has fallen by more than 10% from its most recent peak in July.

There were even more violent declines in some individual stocks with Snap, the owner of Snapchat, down 30% at one point and the chipmaking giant Intel down 28%. Shares of the British chip designer Arm Holdings, which is also listed on Nasdaq, fell a further 6% and has lost getting on for a quarter of its stock market value this week. Amazon, one of the tech heavyweights whose trading updates disappointed Wall Street overnight, fell by 12%.

Other asset classes are also falling. The price of oil – demand for which would be expected to fall in the event of a US recession – is on course to complete a fourth consecutive weekly reverse with a barrel of Brent crude this afternoon hitting $77.70,  a level last seen un the first week of June.

To the upside, the price of gold, a traditional safe haven for investors, this afternoon is back at close to the all-time high of $2483.60 that it hit on 17 July.

And US Treasuries (US government IOUs) have also risen sharply. The yield (which falls when the price rises) on 2-year US Treasuries, which closely track interest rates, fell below 4% for the first time since May last year while the yield on 10-year Treasuries fell at one point to 3.79%, a level last seen in December last year.

Market commentators and economists now fully expect the Fed to cut interest rates next month.

Seema Shah, chief global strategist at fund manager Principal Asset Management, said: "Oh dear, has the Fed made a policy mistake? The labour market's slowdown is now materialising with more clarity. Job gains have dropped below the 150,000 threshold that would be considered consistent with a solid economy.

"A September rate cut is in the bag and the Fed will be hoping that they haven't, once again, been too slow to act."

Michael Brown, market analyst at the trading platform Pepperstone, added: "The July US jobs report pointed to a continued cooling in labour market conditions. There is little in this report that is likely to dissuade the Federal Reserve open markets committee from delivering this cycle's first [interest rate] cut at the next meeting in September, as was hinted at in this week's statement."

European stocks, meanwhile, had already fallen on Thursday and continued those declines today. The FTSE-100 is down by 2.15% since Wednesday evening, a slighter fall than some of its peers in continental Europe, which have a greater exposure to tech stocks. The CAC-40 in Paris is off by 3.1% in the last two sessions and the DAX in Germany down by 4.1%. The MIB in Italy is down by 5.3% in the same period and the AEX in the Netherlands, an index dominated by ASML – the world's largest maker of equipment used to manufacture chips – is down by 3.9%.

Meanwhile, in the Asia Pacific region, Japanese stocks have seen a truly aggressive wave of selling.

This was due largely to a sharp rally in the yen against the US dollar following a surprise interest rate rise on Wednesday from the Bank of Japan. The weakness in the yen, which hit a 38-year low against the dollar in June this year, has been a major driver of gains for Japanese stocks this year and the currency's rally has sent the market slamming into reverse. The Nikkei 225 index, which contains Japan's top blue-chip companies, had already fallen on Thursday and today declined by a further 5.8% in its biggest one-day fall since March 2020. The Nikkei, which earlier this year hit an all-time high, is now down by 12% since 12 July.

Meanwhile the Topix, which is a broader index of Japanese stocks, fell by 6.2% in its worst one-day fall since 2016.

The interesting thing about this latest sell-off is that, during recent years when central banks like the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England kept their policy rates at ultra-low levels, bad news for the economy was taken as good news for markets on the basis that it would persuade central banks to hold rates lower for longer.

That all changed when, in December 2021, the Bank became the first major central bank around the world to begin raising interest rates and was followed soon after by the Fed.

Now, with the "normalisation" of interest rates under way for more than two years, bad news for the economy is back to being treated as bad news for the markets.

Korean Air has said it will stop serving instant cup noodles on board its planes for safety reasons.

The snack, known as ramyeon, requires boiling water.

The South Korean airline said the snack could be a scalding risk and it was making the change as part of its response to increased incidents of turbulence.

There has been concern since a Singapore Airlines flight was hit by severe turbulence in May.

The plane dropped 54m (178ft) in just four seconds .

Cup noodles have been a popular part of the airline's in-flight service and featured heavily on social media.

They will not be served to tightly seated economy class passengers from 15 August.

Alternatives will include sandwiches and corn dogs, the airline said.

It announced last month that it would finish long and medium-haul cabin services 20 minutes earlier, ending 40 minutes before landing.
