What to wear

How to wear your regalia.

A guide to dressing for ASU graduation ceremonies

The spotlight is on you!

Did you know a graduation cap is called a mortarboard? Wondering how, exactly, to wear that mortarboard? Curious how to show off that master’s degree hood that isn’t really a “hood?” Wondering what a “tam” is?

ASU regalia is required attire at all ASU and Fulton Schools graduation events , so follow the tips below to look your best!

What is regalia?

Regalia is an outer layer of special occasion clothing that consists of a cap, gown and any other special attire worn by a graduate at a graduation ceremony.

Regalia is required

An ASU cap and gown (regalia) is required attire for all graduates. Master’s and doctoral graduates need to have degree-specific regalia. Regalia is to be worn over your own clothing, which is also required.

Carry your regalia to the ceremony

Regalia may not be worn until after you pass through security. So carry it to your Convocation and other graduation events, then put it on after you go through security.

Where do I get my regalia?

There are lots of options for purchasing your cap and gown. We’ve made a handy guide with all the dates and locations , online and in person, where you can buy your regalia. Check it out!

Which degree did you earn?

  • Undergraduate Convocation
  • Graduate Convocation

A: Graduation regalia can be purchased online at www.herffjones.com/college/arizonastate until the deadline.

Your local ASU Sun Devil Campus Store will have regalia available for purchase starting at Grad Fair. You can purchase regalia at each store from Grad Fair until graduation.

A. Please click the Grad Fair Information link at www.herffjones.com/college/arizonastate for all Grad Fair dates and times.

A: The bookstore will carry inventory of caps and gowns from Grad Fair until graduation. However, we do recommend purchasing your regalia earlier in the semester as sizes can run low once graduation nears.

A: If you've missed the final deadline, you can still purchase your regalia through any local Sun Devil Campus Store.

A: Unfortunately, you cannot wear the same gown for both degrees. The Masters level gown has an additional sleeve portion that denotes a higher-level degree has been obtained.

A: ASU has degree color tassels for Master degrees. Masters students will have a degree color hood, as well.

A: Students that purchase a Gradpack will receive a Ceremony Tassel and a Souvenir Tassel. The ceremony tassel will include the ASU Signet. The Souvenir Tassel is Maroon/Gold with a year date signet and is NOT meant to be worn to ceremony.

A: Your graduation announcements are purchased directly online at www.herffjones.com/college/arizonastate. They will be shipped directly to your home address in approximately 2-3 weeks.

A: Due to production standards, 25 announcements is smallest quantity that you can purchase in a set.

A: Ceremony and Convocation times are listed on the University Commencement website. Please visit https://graduation.asu.edu to obtain the proper time of your ceremony.

A: You can simply type in your degree or major instead of choosing a pre-loaded option from the drop-down menu.

A: Yes, your announcement order will come with the appropriate amount of inner and outer envelopes.

A: Yes, we have many students that send out announcements even if they cannot attend their ceremony. Keep in mind that announcements are not invitations to an event, however they are a great way to inform friends and family of all your academic achievements.

A: All diploma frames purchased online through www.herffjones.com/college/arizonastate and through Framingsuccess.com will be shipped to your home address.

A: All frames that are purchased at Grad Fair are distributed at the time of purchase. When you pick up your cap and gown, you should also make sure to pick up your frame as well.

A: Yes. The frames for your Bachelor and Masters degree will hold the standard 8.5'' x 11'' diploma. Frames for Doctoral graduates will fit the standard 11" x 14" diploma.

A: Yes, please visit www.framingsucess.com to view all of your customizable options.

Getting ready to graduate

Congratulations, graduate, below is a list of steps to help you with the process of preparing to graduate and answer any questions you might have.

If you have questions related to University Commencement of participating in graduation ceremonies, please contact University Ceremonies at  [email protected] .

If you have questions about receiving your diploma, please contact the graduation office at  [email protected] .

Confirm that you are ready to graduate

Undergraduate Students Review your degree audit (DARS) to ensure that you will be meeting degree requirements by your conferral date.  You may request a degree audit via MyASU.  Any issues or concerns should be directed to your academic advisor or department (the graduation office cannot make changes to your audit).

Graduate Students Review your iPOS via My ASU and contact your committee chair or department if you have questions about your eligibility to graduate.

Verify your name

Your name will appear on your diploma and in the commencement book as it is recorded in ASU’s Student System. Any  name changes  must be made through the Outgoing Transcripts Section of University Registrar Services. This includes lower/upper case corrections. Special characters may be noted on the  Diploma Name  form.

Check your address

Diplomas are mailed to the  address on file  with the university. If this address is incorrect, your diploma may not find you. It is your responsibility to keep your address updated. The posting of degrees begins shortly after the conferral date and generally diplomas arrive 4-6 weeks after the conferral date.

Get your graduation regalia

You will receive your diploma case at your college convocation, but here is what you need to get:

  • Academic Regalia (Cap and Gown). Visit the  Sun Devil Campus Stores  for information about purchasing regalia for commencement activities.
  • - Cum Laude (3.40 - 3.59 GPA)
  • - Magna Cum Laude (3.60 - 3.79 GPA)
  • - Summa Cum Laude (3.80 - 4.00 GPA)

Cords are for ceremonial purposes only and are awarded based on your current GPA at the time of your request. Honors designated on your diploma will reflect your final cumulative ASU GPA. Pick up honor cords at any  University Registrar Services location .

ASU Online students who’ve earned honor cords will receive them via mail. They’ll be mailed automatically to eligible students.

Celebrate your achievement

Visit  graduation.asu.edu  for a complete schedule of commencement activities and further information about various college and cultural convocations.

Graduation FAQs

Are tickets required for graduation ceremonies.

Ceremonies held at Grady Gammage Auditorium will require a ticket. Ceremonies held at Wells Fargo Arena or other venues currently do not require tickets. Please check with the dean’s office of your college for details.

Can I come pick up my diploma?

No. Diplomas are printed and mailed by an outside vendor to the diploma address listed on your profile page on My ASU.

How do I RSVP?

Students will RSVP from a link on their My ASU page - go to My Programs and select the Graduation tab. You must apply to graduate and pay the application fee first. You will receive a confirmation via email after successfully submitting your response.

How long does it take for my degree to be posted to my transcript?

The majority of degrees are posted within 10-14 days of the degree conferral date.

What does conferral date mean?

This is the date recorded on your transcript signifying when your degree was officially recognized. All requirements must be met by this date. Dates are published in the University's Academic Calendar.

What if I graduate in summer?

There is a summer conferral date, but no ceremonies are held in the summer. Summer graduates will be recognized in the Fall commencement book and can choose to participate in either spring or fall ceremonies. Contact your college convocation coordinator for further information.

What is the difference between “walking” and graduating?

A graduating student is someone who has met all graduation requirements, whereas “walking” means a student who is participating in ceremonies but is not graduating yet. Diplomas are mailed and not given to students at either commencement or convocation. Students typically participate in the ceremonies that correspond to their graduation semester and students wishing to "walk" in a different ceremony should contact their college convocation coordinator for additional information.

When will I get my diploma?

Generally, diplomas arrive 6-8 weeks after the degree conferral date. You will get an email notification when your diploma has been mailed; for most, diplomas arrive about 2 weeks from this date. More information regarding diplomas can be found on our diploma page

Where can I find information about graduation ceremonies?

ASU hosts a number of graduation ceremonies each fall and spring semester. See University Ceremonies for details.

Why do I have to apply to graduate?

The graduation application notifies our office that it is time to evaluate your record to see if we can award your degree.

Why is my degree not posted to my transcript yet?

This could be a different answer for every person that asks, but each semester there is a considerable amount of end-of-term processing that must occur before degrees can be posted. To ensure that your degree gets posted as soon as possible, please review your DARS or iPOS and work with your advisor to make sure all requirements are marked as complete. The majority of degrees are posted within 10-14 days of the degree conferral date.

Why is there a fee to graduate?

It's common for universities to have a fee associated with graduation. The graduation fee pays for items such as the diploma, diploma case, honor cords, postage, mailers, etc.

ASU fall graduates set to shine

Over 4,600 Arizona residents among those turning their tassel this December and earning a degree

Four people wearing Arizona State shirts and making the pitchfork sign with their hands.

It's a time-honored tradition: Arizona State University students dressed in maroon cap and gown, posing for graduation photos with family and friends in front of Old Main with big smiles.

“I'm so happy and excited to graduate,” said Kaley McGlawn, who will receive a bachelor's degree in elementary education from  Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College  this month.

McGlawn is one of more than 11,000 These figures represent the number of students who have applied for graduation as of Dec. 1. The exact number of degrees may change up to two weeks after graduation. ASU students graduating this December. More than half of those students earned their degrees through ASU Online, including nearly 1,000 participating in the  Starbucks College Achievement Plan . Of the total number of graduate and undergraduate students, Arizona residents made up about 42%, or just over 4,600.

Other notable numbers from this fall's graduating class:

  • Of those who applied to graduate, 7,399 are undergraduates (earning 7,594 degrees) and 3,690 are graduate/ASU Law students (earning 3,693 degrees).
  • The largest number of students — 2,371 — are graduating from The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, followed by 2,271 from the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and 1,115 from the W. P. Carey School of Business.
  • Of the overall total, 1,497 are international students, an 11% increase over last fall. Among international ASU Online students, the increase was over 38%.
  • ASU Online has seen significant increases in a variety of areas, including a 25% increase in the number of students receiving degrees from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts; nearly 23% more from the Thunderbird School of Global Management; more than 21% more from the College of Global Futures.

MORE:  Get to know ASU's notable grads

McGlawn’s plans for the future include teaching in the Mesa Unified School District while attending graduate school. Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College will have 864 graduates this year — representing a nearly 9% increase over the fall 2022 graduating class.

“It feels so surreal to begin the next chapter of my life,” McGlawn said.

This year, 173 students will receive their law degree from the  Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law , an 11% increase over last fall. One of those students is  Zach Rufa , who will be graduating from ASU Law after only two and a half years. In addition to a law degree, he will be awarded two certificates — one in  trial advocacy  and the other in  law, science and technology , with a focus on intellectual property. He has already accepted a position at a law firm in Los Angeles.

“It was certainly intense,” said Rufa, describing his studies at ASU Law. “But now that I have crested that hill, I can see the sun on the horizon and I’m very glad to have done it.”

The university has a range of 28 commencement and convocation ceremonies, running Dec. 9–14, honoring the individual colleges and student groups. Find details below and at  graduation.asu.edu .
