Beast Movie Review: Vijay Is Super-Chill In An Uncomplicated, Jolly Action Comedy Where The Stakes Don’t Matter At All
Cast: Vijay, Pooja Hedge, Aparna das, Yogi Babu, Selvaraghavan, Redin Kingsley
Director: Nelson
There's a fairly straightforward throughline in Beast that ensures this new Vijay film doesn't suffer from the same problems you've come to expect from the superstar's films. In an effort to make a Vijay film a "complete package" with a little bit of everything, especially since Atlee took over, you sense the makers throwing a lot at you assuming some of it sticks. But with Beast's allegiance to almost every single trope you expect in a typical hostage drama, you get a focussed film without the flab and the excesses that make parts of Vijay's films tiring.
Let's take the manner in which the film segues into 'Arabic Kuthu', the monster hit that assumes double duties of both an intro song and Vijay's main dance number. It's around 15 minutes into the film after what's inventively a rather melancholic beginning. Ex-RAW Agent Veeraraghavan (Vijay) has to attend a wedding with his shrink (we'll get back to this point later) when a sudden meet-cute with Preethi (Pooja Hedge) is treated with a kind of humour where its genericness becomes a flavour. The scene itself isn't really special but at least it's Preethi who is making the first move to propose to Veeraghavan and not because she's smitten by him. She just needs an excuse to call off her engagement and time's running out.
By using the idea of her impending engagement as a recurring joke, Nelson manages to remove the need for a love angle that feels long and forced, while also placing on 'Arabic Kuthu' the additional duties of a love duet. Veeraraghavan and Preethi get together soon enough and the film doesn't even try to make the song feel like an organic extension of a scene. In what turns into a dream sequence, the setting, the clothes and the mood changes briskly and we're primed for a film so devoted to the idea of being "jolly" that it's almost offensive to take it seriously.
Shedding this seriousness is vital to Beast because it begins with what could have been the tragic second-half flashback. It's an inventive idea to finish Veeraraghavan's back story so early on because it removes the need for a genre shift later on, making the film's dark comedic tone consistent thereafter. And for what it's worth, it's still a big deal to begin a Vijay film with his character's admission to having mental health issues after a particularly traumatic event. Like in Master , his change in behaviour is a result of overwhelming guilt from having caused harm to an innocent, but over here, the theme of redemption isn't as central as the character's deep trust issues towards the government (both officials and politicians) in general. But the mental health angle is hardly explored beyond this point, even though there's a terrific idea there about how children crying triggers extreme emotions in Veeraraghavan.
This again is something you have to get used to because Nelson doesn't ever want his film to be more than 30 seconds away from the next big joke or sarky wisecrack. It is the same principle he repurposes from his earlier films and it is the reason why so many people love his work. Which means that even when 200 people are being held captive inside a mall or when an 80-year-old lady's brains get blasted out of her skull, we're still waiting for Yogi Babu or Redin Kingsley or VTV Ganesh or Pooja Hegde or Selvaraghavan to say something funny about anyone worth making fun of.
But it's also overwhelmingly true that Nelson doesn't appear as fresh a director as he did during last year's Doctor . To me, the director's most marked ability is the way he creates dozens of goofballs as characters and then inserts them seamlessly into the screenplay. Maybe he had the time then to both write these roles and then also find the quirkiest people on earth to play them. But with Beast , you feel the strains of a man trying to repeat himself because he's running out of ideas.
Which is perhaps why actors like Yogi Babu and Redin aren't able to recreate the riot that they were in Doctor . Even Sathish, who gets a lot of hilarious writing, isn't quite able to 'catch the meter' of an odd Nelson character. The result is a set of sequences that work only when the jokes land. For me, the most consistent supporting character throughout the film was VTV Ganesh who fits perfectly into Nelson's universe. Ganesh's hilariously ageist gag keeps delivering the goods through dry spells and it's one of the few consistent tracks that maintain the film's tone (unlike the clingy fiancé jokes).
Yet the film never becomes flippant although it always borders on it. More than an Indian James Bond as the film describes itself to be, I found the inherent theme of the film closer in spirit to James Cameron's True Lies . This is in part because it leaves you with audacious visuals like Vijay driving a car through a mall and that of F-16 zooming past you, but it's also got to do with how there's an exaggerated, caricature-like atmosphere where the audaciousness is fully owned. And even when you feel stuck craving for a little drama, there's always one clever plot twist or a crazy action scene that reminds you for the 100th time that this isn't a film to be taken seriously.
So when you feel like the portrayal of the terrorists, the corrupt politician or even the good Muslim (Selvaraghavan plays Althaf Hussain) could be problematic, it demands that you step back and notice how the film has made fun of everyone. Add to this the feather-like lightness of the plot (revealed almost entirely in the trailer), resting on a super relaxed Vijay and Anirudh whose Red Bull-infused themes blow up the screen when the energy drops, and we get a Beast of an entertainer in what appears to be the body of a beauty (Manoj Paramahamsa is the DOP). It is focused, unfussy and unsentimental without the weight of a million farmers to save or the womenkind to empower. It's a film that's set in a world best described as 'Jolly O Gymkhana'.

“Leo,” a formulaic but satisfying Indian remake of “ A History of Violence ,” both is and isn’t exactly what it looks like. You won’t be disappointed if you’re expecting a boisterous, bloody, and bass-heavy action musical about a coffee shop owner who must protect his wife and kids from a paranoid drug dealer who claims that our family man is actually a vicious ex-gangster. “Leo” is otherwise business as usual, especially if you see it for Tamil-language speaking star Vijay, as many opening day ticketholders already have .
Vijay’s last few action movies have also served as overstuffed showcases for the chipmunk-cheeked leading man. Vijay (“Beast,” “Varisu”), a former child actor, still doesn’t have much range, but he doesn’t really need to. He’s an action star, and he looks good whenever he’s dispatching scads of heavies with his feet, fists, and various mallets and blades. (Action choreographer/stunt coordinator duo Abumani and Arivumani are credited with planning the movie’s “Action” under their “Anbariv” stage name.)
Vijay looks less at ease whenever he tries to make a multidimensional character out of cafe owner/animal rescuer Parthiban, though his discomfort only adds tension to his character’s identity crisis. Reteaming with “Master” writer/director Lokesh Kanagaraj , Vijay once again asserts his all-utility qualifications: he can wrestle a computer-generated hyena into submission, lead a warehouse full of extras in a (mostly fine) dance number, and even punch drug dealer Antony Das ( Sanjay Dutt ) through the air and into a Land Rover.
Vijay’s drive to affect any mood, style, or pose isn’t unusual for such a popular and charismatic marquee topper. Still, it is striking to see Vijay, still eternally youthful despite his fastidiously stylized beard’s skunk streaks, play a character who protests this much whenever he’s confronted with his killer reputation. There’s even an anthemic song that, in a couple of scenes, suggests that “Mr. Leo Das is a badass.” So, who does Vijay think he’s fooling?
Parthiban, thankfully, doesn’t need to be believable as anything other than a pretext for melodramatic fireworks. In character, Vijay appears convincing enough as a stern but loving dad to pouty pre-teen Mathi (Iyal) and polite adolescent Siddharth ( Mathew Thomas ), as well as a doting but paternal husband to Sathya (Trisha). Some incidental details suggest that, in the town of Theog, Parthiban has a reputation as “an ordinary person, yeah, just a peace lovin’ soul,” as one song goes. Vijay’s still more convincing when he’s inexplicably—but efficiently!—dispatching wave after wave of violent baddies, all of whom either assume Parthiban’s actually Leo Das, Antony’s estranged son, or simply have no clue who they’re dealing with.
A good part of what makes “Leo” so charming is that it’s already so familiar, both for its something-for-everyone mood swings and its pulpy stock plot. There’s no satirical edge here, not like there was in the movie version of “A History of Violence.” But that’s to be expected in a vehicle for a star who, when his character tries to win over his young daughter, dances to the strains of “Thanmani Pookkun” from Tamil icon Prabhu’s 1995 romantic drama “Pasumpon.” In another scene, we hear relatively modern movie music from the 2005 Vijay crime drama “Thirupaachi,” which further hints at “Leo”’s cinematic lineage.
If you already know Vijay, you probably also know what he’s capable of. He reminds us in “Leo” during fight scenes, most of which are composed and cut as dynamically as they are choreographed. Vijay also lightly tests viewers’ expectations whenever Parthiban laments or protests that he couldn’t possibly be Leo. Don’t listen to that song, no matter how many times it’s played: how could you ever doubt that face?
As with many action stars, Vijay’s presence creates its own reality-defying standards of normalcy. In a voiceover aside, he suggests that he (Parthiban) must believe in himself first to be more convincing to everyone else. That’s the nature of this type of movie, whose baggy pacing might still test the patience of anyone who just wants to watch Vijay stab a hyena and maybe also gawk at Sanjay Dutt, I mean Antony Das, as he sacrifices a goat at his Satanic-looking shrine, complete with a pentacle and giant bird of prey statue. Anything can be normal if you’re already invested.
Vijay’s performance is sometimes a little too strained, especially when Parthiban/Leo’s emotional outbursts have to bring a scene to a new level of emotional intensity. Then again, nonchalance doesn’t suit Vijay. He seems to care too much even when he, in character, casually blows away a few more non-descript baddies. If you’re watching “Leo,” it should be to see Vijay show off in between animal attacks, car flips, and celebrity cameos. And even if you don’t expect much from “Leo,” it still might give you exactly what you need.

Varisu movie review: Predictable family drama that works only due to Vijay's presence
Varisu movie review: it’s a quintessential family drama with all the familiar beats. along with vijay, the film also stars rashmika mandanna, sarath kumar, jayasudha, srikanth, shaam and prakash raj..
It is no surprise that mainstream filmmakers in the south still continue to milk the family drama genre to its last drop. In spite of the myriad iterations of the same story template over the years, it is one genre with a very high success rate. No wonder Vamshi Paidipally plays it extremely safe with Varisu, which marks his maiden collaboration with Vijay. It’s your quintessential family drama with all the familiar beats and it’s largely salvaged by the presence of one man, Vijay , who does all the heavy lifting and makes this a fairly engaging watch. Also read: Vijay’s film is old wine in the most decorative bottle. Watch Varisu trailer
The story is centered around a family that’s headlined by Rajendran (Sarath Kumar), who is one of the biggest businessmen in India. His two sons – Jai and Ajay (Srikanth and Shaam) - look after his business and one among them is hopeful of becoming the heir. One fine day when Rajendran learns that he is suffering from advanced-stage pancreatic cancer, he decides to fulfills his wife’s wish of celebrating his 65th birthday in a grand manner. Rajendran’s youngest son, Vijay Rajendran (Vijay), returns home after seven years for the birthday party at the behest of his mother. He had left home after a disagreement with his father over joining the family business. What happens in the family that forces Vijay to stay back and why does his father makes him the chairman of his group of companies?
Varisu is predictable from the word go but what still works in its favour is the mere presence of Vijay. Having predominantly worked in action films in recent years, it was refreshing to see Vijay have fun in an out-and-out family flick. Here’s a film that taps into Vijay’s comical side in a big way and it works like magic. It’s an effortless performance and one that appeals to even a non-Vijay fan. Every time predictability kicks in, Vijay walks in to distract and entertain with his pitch-perfect performance of a son who becomes the saviour of his family. Apart from Vijay, there isn’t a single factor that makes Varisu what it is. Nevertheless, it’s a film you won’t mind taking your family to this Pongal festival.
The familial moments, especially scenes between Vijay and Jayasudha (who plays the mother) work somewhat in an otherwise largely predictable film. For the family drama angle to have worked even more effectively, the conflict between the brothers should’ve been even more stronger. One thing that the film does manage to get right is deliver exactly what the trailer promised. As a viewer if you had walked in with your expectations in place after watching the trailer, you won’t be disappointed.

'The Greatest of All Time' trailer: Thalapathy Vijay shines as 'The GOAT,' ignites the screen with mass appeal
Vijay's highly anticipated film 'greatest of all time' trailer is finally out the action-packed thriller promises dual roles, stunning visuals, and a powerful soundtrack featuring ai-generated vocals..
The latest trailer for ‘Greatest Of All Time’ offers a fresh perspective, building on the teaser clip shared on Vijay's 50th birthday in June. The initial sneak peek confirmed the exciting revelation that Vijay will be portraying two distinct roles—one as a middle-aged character wearing glasses and another as a youthful character with a goatee. However, the new trailer hints at the possibility of even more versions of Vijay, leaving fans excited to uncover what other surprises the movie holds.
On Vijay's 50th birthday in June, fans were delighted with a special release from his upcoming film 'Greatest Of All Time'—the song 'China China Kangal.' What sets this song apart is that it includes vocals generated by AI to sound like Vijay himself, in collaboration with the late Raja Bhavatharini, daughter of the renowned composer Ilaiyaraaja, who sadly passed away earlier this year. The film's music, composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, Ilaiyaraaja’s son, brings a poignant element to the project, blending the classical and contemporary in a fitting homage.
Stunt choreographer Dhilip Subbarayan recently revealed in an interview with Galatta that the upcoming movie 'Greatest Of All Time' goes beyond just its music. He described the filming atmosphere as "jolly" and well-organised and praised the film's technical excellence and the grandeur of its action sequences. He also highlighted Vijay's compelling screen presence that mesmerizes the crew during every shot. Furthermore, he hinted that the film, which is filled with emotions, mass appeal, and entertainment, will see Vijay in a dual role, showcasing his versatility once again.

'Beast' Review: This Nelson-Vijay hostage rescue drama never really takes off
In hostage rescue situations, the big, almost tangible, fear is that innocent people could potentially get killed. It’s what negotiators want to avoid; it’s what the hero usually works against as well. The chess is between cops and criminals usually, and our thrill and tension comes from the awareness that one wrong move in such a delicate situation could result in casualties. Nelson’s third film, Beast, is about a couple of hundred hostages in a mall—and among them is an innocent but infuriatingly talkative, old woman. When the criminal leader eventually put a bullet in her head, I was… relieved. I doubt it is a positive sign when the hero is trying save hostages and you are relieved that one of them has been murdered.
For a while now, we have all known that Beast is about a mall-siege situation. And yet, boy, does this film take its own sweet time—almost an hour—to set it all up. Sure, there may be a point to part of the setup—especially about the RAW-agent protagonist, Veeraraghavan (Vijay), suffering from PTSD… I quite enjoyed that his introduction scene is rather straightforward, and that the title card, Beast, flashes at a time when this character is ironically at his most vulnerable. However, I didn’t realise at the time that would be the last time I would feel good about my viewing experience.
The problem with Beast is how Nelson doesn’t seem to have made up his mind on whether the film should feel real and serious, or parodic and absurd. For instance, Veera goes to a mental health counsellor to deal with his PTSD problem—and I thought to myself that this was a welcome move given how a star like Vijay seeking such help in a film could normalise mental health consultations…
However, the writing gets restless soon, and so, this counsellor’s inefficiency is passed off as humour, and he is also shown to engage in disturbingly lecherous talk about his own young relatives, it seems. All this, of course, is an excuse to introduce Preethi (Pooja Hegde), who—even after 160 minutes of watching this film—I didn’t know much about, except that she hates her fawning fiancee (a track that did not work for me at all) and is desperate for a replacement man. So desperate is she to secure the romantic approval of Veera—a complete stranger to her—that even his warning, “Kiss adichraporen…Poiru!”, gets interpreted as good-natured flirtation.
Even this early in his career, director Nelson’s strength is thought to lie in humour—particularly of the dry and dark variety. The truth is that the setting of Beast—a mall in siege, with so many comedians stuck within—is fertile ground for his brand of humour, and yet, despite the presence of actors like VTV Ganesh, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley… the jokes come in a trickle. VTV Ganesh shows some initial promise, but then, he joins a long list of characters who engage in empty chatter under the guise of humour.
Every time a star joins a young, promising director with a fresh voice, we see a recurring problem—a problem of tonal consistency. In Beast, for instance, every time you get a few Nelson-esque attempts at humour, it’s quickly time for Vijay to come walking towards the camera in slow-motion, even as composer Anirudh tries hard to sell the ‘massiness’… This former RAW agent, Veera, who never takes cover from gunfire, is also an invincible fighter with the ability to duck and swerve like Neo, when bullets rain at him. And as I have so often said about invulnerable heroes, where’s the fun in the bad guys getting the crap beaten out of them…
I suppose the big joke in the film is that the bad guys seem to think they can achieve their goals, with Veera lurking around, with his weapons, and more importantly, his many superpowers including, it seems, being able to disappear at will. Wielding a hammer, he walks at one of the criminals. He disappears quickly when the latter turns at him. The second the criminal turns away again, he reappears from out of nowhere it seems... Noone’s more impressed by him than the government-appointed negotiator, Altaf (Selvaraghavan), who channels the Padayappa Abbas in him throughout this film. Every line he says, every comment he makes… it all feels like a variation of “What a man!”
It’s hard not to empathise with Altaf, I guess. After all, former RAW agent Veera can even drive flying cars between the various floors of the mall. And when he gets bored, he wears roller-skates, just so the kills get a bit more challenging. You know how we often talk about creating suspension of disbelief in discussing cinema… the execution of such scenes in Beast only adds to the disbelief. The real disbelief, however, comes when Vijay, through his character Veera, says something to suggest that he could be viewing Beast as an experiment of sorts. “Ungala nambi dhaan erangirken… Kavuththu utramaatingale?” he asks.
Wait… Beast, as an experimental film?! What, just because the film is set in one location for a long time? Beast, in fact, has everything that tires us about ‘commercial cinema’. The cursory, halfhearted love track with the silly heroine. The filmmaking that’s keener to romanticise the hero’s style than it is interested in telling a meaningful story. The writing that’s so manipulative that it’s hard not to see the apparent deception. I suppose even Veera feels guilty about all the lopsidedness because at the very end, he says, “Innum konjam tough kuduthurkalaam...” Not ‘konjam’, Veera. Nariyave tough kuduthurkalaam. And I’m not just talking about the villain’s strength here.
Director: Nelson Cast: Vijay, Pooja Hegde, VTV Ganesh, Selvaragavan Rating: 2/5

New poster of Thalapathy Vijay’s GOAT.
GOAT headlines Thalapathy Vijay in a dual role, promising fans a thrilling experience with a blend of high-octane action and a gripping narrative.
Thalapathy Vijay’s “The Greatest Of All Time” (GOAT) is one of the most-awaited movies. While everyone is eagerly waiting for the film, it has now been revealed that the makers will unveil its trailer on August 17, 2024. The announcement was made today, 15th August 2024, with a new poster, coinciding with India’s Independence Day.
The new poster features Vijay in his action avatar. He is seen beating a goon and maintaining an intense look on his face. The poster also mentions the trailer release date. The Tamil-language Pan India action film is directed by filmmaker Venkat Prabhu and produced by Kalpathi S Aghoram, Kalpathi S Ganesh and Kalpathi S Suresh of AGS Entertainment.
GOAT headlines Thalapathy Vijay in a dual role, promising fans a thrilling experience with a blend of high-octane action and a gripping narrative. Alongside a stellar cast that includes Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Ajmal Ameer, Mohan, Jayaram, Sneha, Laila, Meenakshi Chaudhary, and Yogi Babu, the film is poised to be a cinematic spectacle. With the music composed by acclaimed composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, the films songs are already a rage.
This film also marks the powerhouse Thalapathy Vijay’s 68th appearance as a hero and his dynamic performance is expected to be one the most pivotal roles of his career.
With the new poster unveiled on a day of national pride, the anticipation for ‘Thalapathy is the GOAT’ is at an all-time high. “The audiences are in for a treat, the collaboration of Venkat Prabhu and Thalapathy Vijay is spectacular. Both creatively and visually the film pushes boundaries and we are looking forward to the audiences experiencing it with the trailer this Saturday. The trailer though, is just a small glimpse of what’s in store” said Archana Kalpathi, CEO, AGS Entertainment.
Recently, the director of GOAT also talked about the film’s plot and said, “‘GOAT’ is a fictional story. But, we have made it closer to reality. Vijay and his core team are a part of the Special Anti Terrorist Squad. It is a wing of RAW. What they did in the past becomes a problem in the present. How Vijay and his core team face the challenges forms the story.”
The film is slated for a worldwide release on September 5, 2024, in both standard and IMAX formats, promising a visual extravaganza that will captivate audiences. Zee Studios will release the film across north India.
