Fraction Word Problems (w/Mixed Operations) Worksheets
Students always feel a little out of their element when they are working on scenario-based problems. As they become much better at them, they begin to see the real value that math has and the power that it can wield in the real world. In this setting we have created a series of problems over the course of the lessons and worksheets that will help your students feel comfortable with fractions in word problems from all types of different angles.

Mixed Operation Fraction Word Problems Lesson - Thomas, the pizza chef, wants to know how many slices of pizza he is making for his next order.
Guided Lesson - Two young women are working hard in this word problem set. Julia at the deli and Marie is preparing for a track event.
Guided Lesson Explanation - The hardest thing with these types of problems is understanding what is being asked and charting it out.
Practice Worksheet 1 - The denominators of all of these problems are small to allow kids to have success with the concepts.
Practice Worksheet 2 - You will need to read these in depth. Again, baby steps here. The more challenging work is found below.
Answer Keys - These are for all the unlocked materials above.
Homework Sheets
The problems on these sheets use a specific operation so that you can pinpoint any weaknesses that exist.
Homework 1 - Add - Jean makes a special snack for Sandra. It contains 1/4 cup flax seed, 3/8 cup Olive oil and 1/2 cup of oats. How many cups is Sandra's special snack?
Homework 2 - Subtract - Jeff walked 2/3 of a 1 mile hike. How much farther does Jeff have to go to complete the hike?
Homework 3 - Multiply - Gretchen collects teddy bears. 1/1 of the collection of teddy bears she received for her birthday. 1/2 of her birthday collection are large teddy bears. How much of her overall teddy bear collection are large teddy bears?
Homework 4 - Divide - A lemonade pitcher has 12 cups of lemonade. If you pour a 1/2 cup as a serving how many servings are in the pitcher?
Practice Worksheets
We followed the same sequence here with the use of math operations.
Practice 1 - Add - Tina loves to read. On Monday she read 6/3 pages, on Tuesday she read 12/6 pages and on Friday she read 24/6 pages. How many pages did she read?

Practice 3 - Multiply - Cliff collects antique farm equipment. 5/8 of his collection are tractors. Of these tractors 1/5 of them are in working order. How much of his whole collection are working tractors?
Practice 4 - Divide - A bag of grain has 12 coffee cups of grain. If you pour a 1/3 of a coffee can as a serving how many servings are in the bag?
Tips for Fraction Word Problems
Word problems that involve fractions are often considered difficult for students resulting in reluctance in attempting the questions. Yes, they are a bit more complex than the normal word problems. However, using the right tips and rules, these questions can be solved by any student. All you need to do is practice. Let's try understanding certain examples.
Multiplying Fraction word problems: While at a bakery, a woman purchased bought half a pound of chocolate fudge cake. She ate that cake at night after dinner around 1/4 of it. How much is left?
Dividing Fraction Word Problem: Jamal's mother made his favorites, peanut butter caramel fudge cake around 1/3 of pound. She divided the fudge into four equal pieces. How much cake will go into each container?
1. You need to read the problem carefully at first. Circle any keywords that may indicate a math operation. For addition, some commonly used terms include: both, in all, increase, and total. Subtraction: difference, fewer, take away, and less. Multiplication: product, times, and lots. Division: each, every, and shared. Give it another read, if you are still not able to understand.
2. Explain the problem in your own words to someone else (a friend or a teacher). It may help to draw a picture.
3. Translate this into an equation or an expression that indicates what we are trying to find. Practice the same problem with different variables and numbers. Students learn how to handle word problems that include and use fractional values.
4. Solve the problem and make sure that you are using the proper units. The value you calculate should answer the question posed by the problem.
Quick Operation Review with Fractions
When you are working with word problems that involve fractions it is good to refer back to the basic foundation of the math that is required. The universal rule when working with these types of problems is to ensure that you are working with fraction values that share a common denominator. The beauty of this is that you do not have to worry about using the least common denominator at first as long as you reduce the final fraction. Find a common denominator between the values that you find easy to work with. When you have both values in that format, addition and subtraction are simple. Just add the numerators for addition and subtract the numerators for subtraction. The denominator will not change. The operation just takes place at the numerator level. When it comes to multiplication, we do not need to worry about finding a common base, just multiply the numerators and denominators of the fractions together. Division is much the same divide the numerators and the denominators. Those are the basic rules you will need to follow when processing these problems. The biggest challenge when working with these types of problems is determining which operation you will need to work with based on the situation. If you look for common keywords, you can quickly establish the type of math that is involved. For addition look for the words: combine(d), increase, join, together, and total. For subtraction look for the words or phrases: decrease, difference, left over, less than, reduce, remove, and take away. For multiplication look for the words or phrases: by, per, product of, and times. For division look for the words: average, equal parts, out of, ratio, shared, and split.

How to solve fraction word problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication? To solve fraction word problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication, you’ll need to follow a systematic approach and apply the appropriate operations to the given fractions. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Steps to Solve Fraction Word Problems with Addition, Subtraction, and Multiplication:
Carefully read the word problem to understand the context and what it’s asking you to find. Identify the given information, the operations required (addition, subtraction, multiplication), and the unknowns.
If the problem involves mixed numbers, convert them to improper fractions for easier calculation. Multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator to get the new numerator. Keep the same denominator.
Based on the problem statement, perform addition, subtraction, or multiplication of the fractions. Use common denominators when adding or subtracting fractions.
Simplify the Result (If Needed): If the result is an improper fraction, consider simplifying it to a mixed number if necessary.
After performing the calculations, double-check your answer to ensure it makes sense in the context of the problem. Verify that your answer matches the requirements of the problem.

Multiplication Facts Worksheets
Welcome to the multiplication facts worksheets page at Math-Drills.com! On this page, you will find Multiplication worksheets for practicing multiplication facts at various levels and in a variety of formats. This is our most popular page due to the wide variety of worksheets for multiplication available. Or it could be that learning multiplication facts and multiplication strategies are essential to many topics in mathematics beyond third grade math.
Learning multiplication facts to the point of quick recall should be a goal for all students and will serve them well in their math studies. Multiplication facts are actually easier to learn than you might think. First of all, it is only essential to learn the facts from 1 to 9. Somewhere along the way students can learn that anything multiplied by zero is zero. Hopefully, that is an easy one. Students also need to learn to multiply by ten as a precursor to learning how to multiply other powers of ten. After those three skills are learned, everything else is long multiplication. Multiplying by 11 is actually two-digit multiplication. Now, learning fact tables of 11 and beyond will do no harm to those students who are keen and able to learn these things quickly, and it might help them figure out how many eggs are in a gross faster than anyone else, but keep it simple for those students who struggle a bit more.

Multiplication Facts Tables
The multiplication tables with individual questions include a separate box for each number. In each box, the single number is multiplied by every other number with each question on one line. The tables may be used for various purposes such as introducing the multiplication tables, skip counting, as a lookup table, patterning activities, and memorizing.

The compact multiplication tables are basically lookup charts. To look up a multiplication fact, find the first factor in the column header and the second factor in the row headers; then use straight edges, your fingers or your eyes to find where the column and row intersect to get the product. These tables are better than the previous tables for finding patterns, but they can be used in similar ways. Each PDF includes a filled out table page and a blank table page. The blank tables can be used for practice or assessment. You might also make a game out of it, such as "Pin the Fact on the Table" (a play on Pin the Tail on the Donkey). Students are given a product (answer) and they pin it on an enlarged version or the table (photocopier enlargement, interactive whiteboard, overhead projector, etc.). Paper-saving versions with multiple tables per page are included. The left-handed versions of the multiplication tables recognize that students who use their left hands might block the row headings on the right-handed versions.

Five Minute Multiplication Frenzies
Five minute frenzy charts are 10 by 10 grids that are used for multiplication fact practice (up to 12 x 12) and improving recall speed. They are very much like compact multiplication tables, but all the numbers are mixed up, so students are unable to use skip counting to fill them out. In each square, students write the product of the column number and the row number. They try to complete the chart in a set time with an accuracy goal (such as less than five minutes and score 98 percent or better).
It is important to note here that you should NOT have students complete five minute frenzies if they don't already know all of the multiplication facts that appear on them. If you want them to participate with the rest of the class, cross off the rows and columns that they don't know and have them complete a modified version. Remember, these charts are for practice and improving recall, not a teaching tool by itself.
Students who write with their left hands may cover the row headings on the right-handed versions, so the left-handed versions have the row headings on the other side.

When a student first learns multiplication facts, try not to overwhelm them with the entire multiplication table. The following worksheets include one row of the facts in order with the target digit on the bottom and one row with the target digit on the top. The remaining rows include each of the facts once, but the target digit is randomly placed on the top or the bottom and the facts are randomly mixed on each row.

Some students find it easier to focus on one multiplication fact at a time. These multiplication worksheets include some repetition, of course, as there is only one thing to multiply by. Once students practice a few times, these facts will probably get stuck in their heads for life. Some of the later versions include a range of focus numbers. In those cases, each question will randomly have one of the focus numbers in question. For example, if the range is 6 to 8, the question might include a 6, 7 or 8 or more than one depending on which other factor was chosen for the second factor.

Multiplication Facts beyond the 12 Times Table
It is quite likely that there are students who have mastered all of the multiplication facts up to the 12 times tables. In case they want/need an extra challenge, this sections includes multiplication facts worksheets above 12 with the expectation that students will use mental math or recall to calculate the answers.

Expand your mental math abilities by learning multiplication facts beyond the twelve times tables with these worksheets. They are horizontally arranged, so you won't be tempted to use an algorithm. Even if you can't recall all these facts yet, you can still figure them out using the distributive property. Let's say you want to multiply 19 by 19, that could be (10 × 19) + (9 × 19). Too hard? How about (10 × 10) + (10 × 9) + (9 × 10) + (9 × 9)! Or just remember that 19 × 19 = 361 :)
