He amuses us with his daily fetching of random things like slippers, or one of his toys. We love him with all our heart and he has become an essential member of our family.

My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc.

As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Anton Chekhov’s short story "The Lady with the Pet Dog" begins in the resort town of Yalta , where a new visitor — a "fair-haired young woman of medium height" who owns a white Pomeranian — has caught the attention of the vacationers. In particular, this young woman piques the interest of Dmitri Dmitrich Gurov, a well-educated married man who has regularly been unfaithful to his wife.

Chekhov wrote "The Lady with the Pet Dog" in 1899, and there's much about the story to suggest it's semi-biographical. At the time he wrote it, Chekhov was a regular resident of Yalta and was dealing with protracted periods of separation from his own lover, the actress Olga Knipper.

As Chekhov wrote to her in October of 1899, "I have grown accustomed to you. And I feel so alone without you that I cannot accept the idea that I shall not see you again until spring."

Plot Summary of 'The Lady with the Pet Dog'

Gurov introduces himself to the woman with the pet dog one evening, while both of them are dining in a public garden. He learns that she is married to an official in the Russian provinces and that her name is Anna Sergeyevna.

The two become friends, and one evening Gurov and Anna walk out to the docks, where they find a festive crowd. The crowd eventually disperses, and Gurov suddenly embraces and kisses Anna. At Gurov’s suggestion, the two of them retire to Anna’s rooms.

But the two lovers have very different reactions to their newly-consummated affair: Anna bursts into tears and Gurov decides that he is bored with her. Nonetheless, Gurov continues the affair until Anna leaves Yalta .

Gurov returns to his home in and his job at a city bank. Though he attempts to immerse himself in the life of the city, he is unable to shake off his memories of Anna. He sets out to visit her in her provincial hometown.

He encounters Anna and her husband at a local theater, and Gurov approaches her during an intermission. She is disconcerted by Gurov’s surprise appearance and his unabashed displays of passion. She tells him to leave but promises to come to see him in Moscow .

The two continue their affair for several years, meeting at a hotel in Moscow. However, they’re both troubled by their secretive lives, and by the end of the story, their plight remains unresolved (but they are still together).

Background and Context of 'The Lady with the Pet Dog'

Like a few of Chekhov’s other masterpieces “The Lady with the Pet Dog” may have been an effort to imagine how a personality like his would have fared under different, perhaps unfavorable circumstances.

It is worth noting that Gurov is a man of art and culture. Chekhov himself began his professional life divided between his work as a traveling doctor and his pursuits in literature. He had more or less forsaken medicine for writing by 1899; Gurov may be his attempt to envision himself in the kind of staid lifestyle he had left behind.

Themes in 'The Lady with the Pet Dog'

Like many of Chekhov’s stories, “The Lady with the Pet Dog” centers on a protagonist whose personality remains static and staid, even when the conditions around him are sharply altered. The plot bears similarity to several of Chekhov’s plays, including “Uncle Vanya” and “Three Sisters,” which focus on characters who are incapable of forsaking their unwanted lifestyles, or of overcoming their personal failings.

Despite its romantic subject matter and its focus on a small, private relationship, “The Lady with the Pet Dog” also levels harsh criticisms at society in general. And it is Gurov who delivers the bulk of these criticisms.

Already jaded in romance and repelled by his own wife, Gurov eventually develops bitter feelings for Moscow society. Life in Anna Sergeyevna’s tiny hometown, however, is not much better. Society offers only easy and fleeting pleasures in "The Lady with the Pet Dog." In contrast, the romance between Gurov and Anna is more difficult, yet more durable.

A cynic at heart, Gurov lives a life based on deception and duplicity. He is aware of his less appealing and less overt traits and is convinced that he has given Anna Sergeyevna a falsely positive impression of his personality.

But as “The Lady with the Pet Dog” progresses, the dynamic of Gurov’s double-life undergoes a change. By the end of the story, it is the life he shows to other people that feels base and burdensome — and his secret life that seems noble and beautiful.

The Russian pet market: prepared for the future

The Russian pet food market today is worth €3 billion ($3.3 billion) and is expected to grow to €10 billion ($11 billion) in the coming years.

This ambition will need a well-structured pet retail network with professionally run manufacturers and distributors throughout the country. PETS International visited the main players.

Pet retail sector

The Russian pet retail sector consists of over 12,000 pet shops and 30 pet retail chains. The biggest are Four Paws (256+ shops) and Bethowen (110 shops). There are the following types of outlets:

Street market pavilions
Veterinarians
Independent stores
Local chains in large cities
National chains
Supermarkets and hypermarkets
Internet channels.

Pet retail outlets

PETS International visited several pet retail outlets.

1. Street market pavilions

Small shops, approximately 50 sqm, mostly located in permanent market hall locations. They have a limited assortment, but their strength is knowing their customers well. This allows them to tailor products and prices to the buyer.

2. Veterinarians

Veterinarians have a limited market share. But most local or national chains have veterinarian corners in their shops.

3 Independent stores

Spread over Russia, even in places difficult to get to, there are independent pet shops. Talking to big distributors such as Valta and the Triol Group, it became clear that their services and training have helped to professionalise these retailers.

4. Local chains in large cities

Some chains have 20-30 stores in large regional cities. Examples are Gold Fish, Vetna and Mokryi Nos.

5. National chains

Companies like Bethowen and Four Paws, with 110 stores and 256 stores respectively in large urban centres, including Moscow, are working towards national distribution.

6. Supermarkets and hypermarkets

Found in cities in stand-alone locations or modern shopping malls. Some, such as Lenta, are opening pet speciality shop-in-shop formats, while others have a wide range of pet products.

7. Internet channels

The main online platforms are: beru.ru, wildberries.ru and ozon.ru, but there are other smaller platforms too.

Wildberries also has 4,000 ‘fitting rooms’, where orders can be picked up and clothing tried on. Another 4,000 locations are planned.

Pet retail case studies

All chains are professional and well-prepared for the modern consumer. For in-depth insights, we spoke to some chain owners and CEOs. The case studies presented here are based on those discussions.

Case study: Markvet (retailer)

Markvet is a chain of seven pet shops that opened in 1992, when there were not many independent entrepreneurs. So most shops are located in unusual places, such as basements of apartment buildings. The shops are, however, very professionally run, with a wide range of products and a veterinarian corner. The staff, who they train themselves, are also very professional, with excellent knowledge and understanding of local customer needs. Surprisingly, Markvet has an online channel too. And they import luxury brands such as Hunter.

Case study: Bethowen (retailer)

Bethowen has 110 stores: 100 in the Moscow area and 10+ stores in St. Petersburg and other urban centres. Rents and property availability limit the number of new stores. They have an online platform, and part of their retail concept is the integration of offline shops to give the younger generation fast and cheap deliveries. Bethowen has eighteen private label food and accessory brands. All shops have a veterinarian corner for OTC and prescriptionproducts. CRM is important to Bethowen, allowing a customer-centric approach. Bethowen is increasingly customer focussed, treating pet owners as pet parents. Their brand positioning is: ‘Happy family with a pet’ and is all about storytelling and emotions. This is also reflected in their store design.

Case study: Four Paws (retailer)

Four Paws has 260+ shops in Moscow and 17 other regions. They are expanding eastwards towards other big cities. Their policy is to open shops close to supermarkets/hypermarkets to ensure store traffic. Four Paws has its own academy including e-learning; staff expertise is one of their USPs. Fast delivery is another. Orders placed via the omni-channel are delivered in 3-4 hours, or are available within twenty minutes at the closest shop. Ordering is also possible via their app. The m-commerce app sends push messages. Their m-commerce platform is to be further developed to provide a personalised customer experience. They are also testing self-checkouts. Many of these new applications are tested in their 750 sqm flagship pet centre in Moscow, including a veterinary clinic, grooming and educational space for pet parents.

Case study: Dino Zoo (retailer)

A 3,000 sqm flagship store opened in Riga in 2017, and there is now a 1,500 sqm flagship store in Moscow, in the prestigious new shopping centre ‘Salaris’, which will attract 900,000 shoppers per month. This is Dino Zoo, part of the Plaček Group. Plaček is strong in the Eastern European market, and is now launching in Russia. Their ambition is to become a strong player here too, with a ‘soft franchise’ approach rather than their own shops. This will contribute to sales of their private labels. The company is fully aware of modern consumer needs and behaviour, and their marketing communication strategy offline and online is dedicated to this.

Case study: Triol Group (distributor)

Triol Group has been a manufacturer and distributor since 1993. It also works as a retailer under the name Pet City, with a 600 sqm flagship store in a Moscow suburb. The company is one of the leading distributors in the Russian pet market, with 18,000 SKU, a state-of-the-art 22,000 sqm warehouse and 500 employees. Triol has branches in Moscow and another eleven cities across Russia and Belarus. They are the positive and creative force in the market, with their own private label, but also selling leading brands and with a licence to sell Disney products. Above all, their products are priced competitively. This approach has been successful, leading to a year-by-year ongoing double-digit business increase, which outpaces market developments. To avoid the impact of currency fluctuations, their strategy is to develop and sell more of their own products.

Case study: Valta Pet Products (distributor)

With 23 years of experience and expertise, Valta’s mission is to influence the pet industry by being more than just a distributor and hoping to have a positive impact on pet healthcare. To achieve this, they have their own government-licensed academy. Valta has regional offices throughout Russia. Here, they persuade pet shop owners to become more state of the art, with a consumer approach, modern interior and better financial conditions. To work efficiently in this huge market, they run an app which gives individual terms and a 3D picture of the product. It makes ordering very effective. Their cash & carry shops all over the country make local deliveries easier and provide locations for meetings and training. Their strategy as a ‘holistic’ distributor is based on five pillars: logistics, marketing, finance,

promoting the emotional side of pet ownership via events and YouTube, and delivering all this via consultancy.

Case study: Apicenna (manufacturer)

Apicenna is a leading veterinary pharmaceutical company with a 30-year history. Specialised in dedicated products for farm and, particularly, companion animals, it manufactures medicines and cosmetics as well as food additives for the production of canned food. The production facility is state of the art, with certified clean room conditions. Innovation is key for the company, and in 2020 Apicenna will be opening a new R&D facility. It is one of the top three players in veterinarian products in Russia, with a constant increase in turnover that outpaces market developments. The company is set to expand further towards both Eastern Europe and North Africa, and aims to become market leader in private label solutions. They believe in sharing their professional knowledge through education programmes for veterinarians and pet shops, as well as with consumers via social media and advertising.

Zooinform is a media company specialised in the pet industry and with 22 years’ experience and a wide network. It is an information hub for the Russian pet industry and has several publications for the b-to-b and b-to-c segments as well as an online presence. As the PETS International agent in Russia, Zooinform provides international companies with services for launching products, market overview, searching for reliable business partners, promotion, PR and communications.

How Russian disinformation campaigns have sought to undermine the Paris Olympics

WASHINGTON (AP) — The actor in the viral music video denouncing the 2024 Olympics looks a lot like French President Emmanuel Macron. The images of rats, trash and the sewage, however, were dreamed up by artificial intelligence.

Portraying Paris as a crime-ridden cesspool, the video mocking the Games spread quickly on social media platforms like YouTube and X, helped on its way by 30,000 social media bots linked to a notorious Russian disinformation group that has set its sights on France before . Within days, the video was available in 13 languages, thanks to quick translation by AI.

“Paris, Paris, 1-2-3, go to Seine and make a pee,” taunts an AI-enhanced singer as the faux Macron actor dances in the background, seemingly a reference to water quality concerns in the Seine River where some competitions are taking place.

Moscow is making its presence felt during the Paris Games, with groups linked to Russia’s government using online disinformation and state propaganda to spread incendiary claims and attack the host country — showing how global events like the Olympics are now high-profile targets for online disinformation and propaganda.

Over the weekend, disinformation networks linked to the Kremlin seized on a divide over Algerian boxer Imane Khelif , who has faced unsubstantiated questions about her gender. Baseless claims that she is a man or transgender surfaced after a controversial boxing association with Russian ties said she failed an opaque eligibility test before last year’s world boxing championships.

Russian networks amplified the debate, which quickly became a trending topic online. British news outlets, author J.K. Rowling and right-wing politicians like Donald Trump added to the deluge. At its height late last week, X users were posting about the boxer tens of thousands of times per hour, according to an analysis by PeakMetrics, a cyber firm that tracks online narratives.

The boxing group at the root of the claims — the International Boxing Association — has been permanently barred from the Olympics, has a Russian president who is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and its biggest sponsor is the state energy company Gazprom. Questions also have surfaced about its decision to disqualify Khelif last year after she had beaten a Russian boxer.

Approving only a small number of Russian athletes to compete as neutrals and banning them from team sports following the invasion of Ukraine all but guaranteed the Kremlin’s response, said Gordon Crovitz, co-founder of NewsGuard, a firm that analyzes online misinformation. NewsGuard has tracked dozens of examples of disinformation targeting the Paris Games, including the fake music video.

Russia’s disinformation campaign targeting the Olympics stands out for its technical skill, Crovitz said.

“What’s different now is that they are perhaps the most advanced users of generative AI models for malign purposes: fake videos, fake music, fake websites,” he said.

AI can be used to create lifelike images , audio and video, rapidly translate text and generate culturally specific content that sounds and reads like it was created by a human. The once labor-intensive work of creating fake social media accounts or websites and writing conversational posts can now be done quickly and cheaply.

Another video amplified by accounts based in Russia in recent weeks claimed the CIA and U.S. State Department warned Americans not to use the Paris metro. No such warning was issued.

Russian state media has trumpeted some of the same false and misleading content. Instead of covering the athletic competitions, much of the coverage of the Olympics has focused on crime, immigration, litter and pollution.

One article in the state-run Sputnik news service summed it up: “These Paris ‘games’ sure are going swimmingly. Here’s an idea. Stop awarding the Olympics to the decadent, rotting west.”

Russia has used propaganda to disparage past Olympics, as it did when the then-Soviet Union boycotted the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. At the time, it distributed printed material to Olympic officials in Africa and Asia suggesting that non-white athletes would be hunted by racists in the U.S., according to an analysis from Microsoft Threat Intelligence, a unit within the technology company that studies malicious online actors.

Russia also has targeted past Olympic Games with cyberattacks.

“If they cannot participate in or win the Games, then they seek to undercut, defame, and degrade the international competition in the minds of participants, spectators, and global audiences,” analysts at Microsoft concluded.

A message left with the Russian government was not immediately returned on Monday.

Authorities in France have been on high alert for sabotage, cyberattacks or disinformation targeting the Games. A 40-year-old Russian man was arrested in France last month and charged with working for a foreign power to destabilize the European country ahead of the Games.

Other nations, criminal groups, extremist organizations and scam artists also are exploiting the Olympics to spread their own disinformation. Any global event like the Olympics — or a climate disaster or big election — that draws a lot of people online is likely to generate similar amounts of false and misleading claims, said Mark Calandra, executive vice president at CSC Digital Brand Services, a firm that tracks fraudulent activity online.

CSC’s researchers noticed a sharp increase in fake website domain names being registered ahead of the Olympics. In many cases, groups set up sites that appear to provide Olympic content, or sell Olympic merchandise.

Instead, they’re designed to collect information on the user. Sometimes it’s a scam artist looking to steal personal financial data. In others, the sites are used by foreign governments to collect information on Americans — or as a way to spread more disinformation.

“Bad actors look for these global events,” Calandra said. “Whether they’re positive events like the Olympics or more concerning ones, these people use everyone’s heightened awareness and interest to try to exploit them.”

From VP hopeful to Kamala's hype man: Shapiro flexes on Trump and Dem doubters

Shapiro's support for Israel and his handling of sexual harassment claims against a former cabinet member may have hurt his chances.

PHILADELPHIA ― When Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro bounded onto the stage Tuesday evening, he was energetic, charismatic and clearly at home.

It was a glimpse of what might have been. Before the harsh reality of politics set in.

Shapiro swallowed whatever disappointment he may have felt in losing out on the chance to become Vice President Kamala Harris ' running mate and made himself the rousing hype man for the Democratic presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz , whom Harris had asked just hours earlier to join her on the ticket.

“I love you, Philly – and you know what else I love? I love being your governor!” Shapiro said to deafening cheers from inside Temple University’s Liacouras Center, where Harris and Walz were making their first joint campaign appearance.

For days, it had appeared that Shapiro would end up as Harris’ vice-presidential running mate. He had interviewed for the job, and the choice came down to him and Walz. Harris’s decision to go with Walz stunned many given Shapiro’s credentials: He’s a popular governor of a battleground state that could determine the winner of the election.

But Shapiro also carried considerable baggage that would have made him a risky choice. Shapiro, who is Jewish, has infuriated the Democratic Party’s progressives as well as Arab Americans and Muslims over his support for Israel in its ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.

And while his positions aren't that different from the other names on Harris's shortlist, it was Shapiro who frequently faced the toughest scrutiny.

Shapiro, 51, has been one of the most steadfast Democratic supporters of Israel, arguing that it has a right to defend itself from Hamas. He has been critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him "one of the worst leaders of all time.” But he has also refrained from calling for an immediate cease-fire, which put him at odds with many of the party’s left-wing voters.

How much Shapiro’s stance on Israel – and the possibility that could have splintered the party – weighed on Harris’s decision to pick Walz wasn’t immediately clear. Had Harris chosen him, Shapiro would have been the second practicing Jew to run for vice president, behind the late Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, who ran alongside Al Gore in 2000. But voters have never elected a Jewish president or vice president in the nation's nearly 250-year history.

From the rally stage, Shapiro showed no signs of hard feelings. He heaped praise on Walz, calling him “a dear friend” and “a great patriot” and urging the crowd “to give him a whole lot of love.”

He doubled down on defending his Jewish faith ― and even appeared to be firing back at detractors who had dubbed him "Genocide Josh."

“I lean on my family, and I lean on my faith, which calls me to serve,” Shapiro said. "And I am proud of my faith."

'Family and faith ground me'

Shapiro's faith has been central to his personal life and political career from an early age, when he began a letter-writing campaign to raise awareness about Soviet Jews barred from leaving their country, to the final days of Harris's search for a running mate.

Shapiro grew up in Upper Dublin in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

As a child, Shapiro, with the help of his mother, Judi, started a letter-writing program to raise awareness about “refuseniks,” Soviet Jews who were refused permission to emigrate from the Soviet Union, usually to Israel, in the late 1960s through the 1970s.

“These were Soviet Jewish children and families who were refused the ability to leave the Soviet Union, to practice their faith and to live free lives,” he said during an interview with the USA Today Network when running for governor in 2021. “And my mom served on those issues, and she got me inspired to work on those issues as well,”

Shapiro’s pen-pal in that program, a boy named Avi, traveled to America to attend Shapiro’s bar mitzvah at the Beth Shalom synagogue near Upper Dublin. Avi’s family were granted asylum in Israel soon after.

Growing up, Shapiro attended the Forman Hebrew Day School and then the Akiba Hebrew Academy, now the Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy.

During his 2022 gubernatorial bid, Shapiro didn't shy away from his faith — and neither did his opponent, state Sen. Doug Mastriano, a self-described Christian nationalist from Franklin County.

In his first campaign TV ad, Shapiro said no matter where he starts his day, "I make it home Friday night for Sabbath dinner," which he celebrates with his wife and four children every week, "because family and faith ground me."

Mastriano, speaking to supporters, said Shapiro harbored "disdain for people like us," because he "grew up in a privileged neighborhood, attended one of the most privileged schools in the nation as a young man... sending his four kids to the same privileged, exclusive, elite school."

Shapiro, however, turned Mastriano's extremist views against him, criticizing him for his ties to other Christian nationalists, including Andrew Torba, founder of the conservative social media platform Gab.

Israel's war with Hamas

Since the attack on Israel by Hamas and other Palestinian militants in Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, Shapiro has several times rankled progressives and Arab-American and Muslim populations angered over Israel's response to the war. Israeli forces have killed nearly 40,000 Palestinian civilians and combatants, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Shapiro has supported Israel's right to defend itself from Hamas. But he also has refrained from calling for a cease-fire, made references to the Ku Klux Klan in discussing pro-Palestinian protestors, and raised questions about his support for free-speech rights in calling for the firing for University of Pennsylvania President Elizabeth Magill over anti-Israel campus protests.

Some Shapiro defenders have said that the popular governor's position on Israel differs little from other Democratic lawmakers and that criticism of him is antisemitic.

Over the weekend, for example, he was forced to defend an essay he wrote for his college newspaper in which he suggested that Palestinians were “too battle-minded” to achieve a two-state solution in the Middle East. Shapiro said his views have evolved in the three decades since he penned the article, but critics called his remarks racist and anti-Palestinian.

Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, said she finds the conversation about Shapiro to be "concerning" and said he has "positions on Israel that largely align with the vast majority of other potential VP candidates."

“There's a lot of important and constructive debate and criticism that should happen around his policies or anyone else's policies” when it comes to Israel or campus protests, she said. But “if it's only the Jewish candidate that is being singled out with terms like ‘Genocide Josh,’ then that is deeply problematic.”

Other factors also may have kept Shapiro off the presidential ticket.

"There may have been an experience factor," said Robert Speel, professor of political science at Penn State's Behrend campus in Erie, Pa. "Walz not only has served as governor for six years, but he also served in Congress for many years before that. He also was an officer in the Army National Guard and served for a couple of decades. Tim Walz certainly has an impressive resume, which may have given him a boost over Shapiro."

Like Harris, Shapiro is a former state attorney general, but he has served as governor for less than two years, has no experience on the federal level and lacks military bona fides.

"There were some negative attributes to a potential Shapiro choice," Speel said. "One was his past support for school vouchers, which is not particularly popular with liberals. Second, the way he reacted last fall when there were protesters at university campuses in Philadelphia incensed over what was happening in the Middle East. There were many Democrats, particularly young Democrats, who were not happy with Shapiro kind of joining in with Republicans to attack student protestors. That may have played a role as well."

Shapiro, who many consider a moderate Democrat, would have added an ideological balance to the ticket while also helping Harris nab a critical battleground state.

Shapiro's candidacy, however, faced opposition on multiple fronts.

Sex scandal

Also, haunting Shapiro were questions about what he knew and when he knew it about sexual harassment claims involving a former cabinet member.

Last fall, Shapiro's office quietly settled for $295,000 a claim that a longtime ally had made numerous sexual advances toward a subordinate, as well as lewd comments about the subordinate, other female staffers and a female state senator, as The (Philadelphia) Inquirer has reported . The employee had only been on the job for two months when Mike Vereb, Shapiro's secretary of legislative affairs, allegedly began making the comments.

Days after the woman told Vereb that his conduct was becoming the subject of office gossip, she was called into a meeting with the human resources department for the governor's office. Vereb later mentioned to her that the meeting was about performance issues with her job.

The woman resigned in March after that meeting and a separate meeting with Shapiro staffers in which she addressed her concerns. She provided a statement to the state Office of Equal Opportunity that month, and in June filed a complaint with the state Human Relations Commission. The settlement, which included a non-disclosure agreement that prohibits all parties from commenting on the matter, was paid in September. Vereb resigned weeks later.

Shapiro has been peppered with questions about why Vereb was allowed to remain in his job for months after the allegations were lodged against him.

'It's kind of bittersweet'

At the campaign rally in Philadelphia, Marc Seide, a 34-year-old web designer from Philadelphia, said he believes Walz "balances out" the ticket and that Shapiro's opposition from progressives might have posed too many challenges.

"The is my first campaign event of the year, and I'm excited. I'm really excited to see how this goes," Seide said. "To go from (Joe) Biden to Harris and to see that energy out here in the crowd − it's tremendous."

Robin Reid, 63, of Philadelphia, said she had been rooting for Shapiro to become Harris' running mate "because he’s from Pennsylvania, and he’s just relatable.

"I’ve never heard of Tim Walz,” Reid said.

“But at the same time," she added, "we were afraid of losing Josh Shapiro, so it’s kind of bittersweet."
