If there’s two things that are probably difficult to balance as a college student, it’s focusing on your studies while making money.

There’s really no point in stressing yourself with a full-time or part-time job if it’s going to negatively impact your academic success.

I know for me, when I was in college I was juggling working as an ABA therapist for children with autism and my Psychology courses. There were times when I had to go to work at 5 am and then class at 8:30 am and BE AWAKE and ready to learn!

Tough times for sure. But there is another way you can make money online and on your own terms, while taking very little time out of your busy study schedule.

Freelance writing is an amazing opportunity to earn money during your free time.

Yes, it will take some legwork to get started but, as long as you have the time to write, you can start earning some additional income.

On Contently , you don’t need to dig through job boards to find writing jobs. Instead, you create a portfolio on the site where editors and clients can search for content.

This service is a bit more high-end than other content mills, so you can stand to make good money here.

However, rates are negotiated between the freelancer and the client, so it’s hard to gauge how much you’ll make.

12. ClearVoice

ClearVoice is a similar service to Contently, but instead of putting up a portfolio and waiting for work, you can actually pitch to clients.

It’s a cliche tip but it’s the truth — networking can be an incredibly effective way to get work as a ghost . More experienced writers can reach out to previous clients who probably know other authors in need of writerly expertise. New freelance writers can ask family and friends; you’d be surprised how many good stories are lying underneath our everyday lives, waiting for a chance to shine. Narratively asks for unique stories with a clear arc that engages the reader, so some creative writing skills are crucial. They pay around 0.10$ per word, and most articles are within the 2,000-5,000 words range. 

15. Boulevard Magazine 

If you want to write short stories and get paid for it, consider submitting to Boulevard . They’re open to fiction, non-fiction, and poetry submissions from November 1 to May 1, and they pay up to $300 per prose piece and $250 per poem. 2. Best Writing

A relatively new platform, Best Writing got its start in 2020 when two friends decided writers needed a better way to find great work. Subscribe to the Best Writing newsletter, and you’ll receive weekly emails packed with hand-picked writing opportunities. The site aggregates writing jobs from online job portals, social media, newsletters, and selected partners, serving up everything from remote freelance gigs to full-time positions.

Best Writing is also a talent marketplace; for a small fee, you can gain access to a daily newsletter with the latest writing jobs and create a public writer profile. If you’re looking to be more proactive and make sure you don’t miss out on an opportunity, the Writer Membership might be the way to go. Because Best Writing is a newer platform, there may be less competition, although that could change as the platform grows — so get in while the getting’s good.

3. Superpath Jobs

Another larger platform with thousands of writers, Superpath Jobs is an online jobs aggregator that caters to content strategists, creators, editors, and freelance writers. Browse jobs by category, location, company, and more — and apply externally to any positions of interest.

While Superpath may look like just another job site, there’s more to it: Not only are you only seeing jobs in your desired field, but the platform also has a Slack community to which writers can apply to join. Once approved, you can connect with other like-minded creators, share tips and tricks, and support one another on your writing journeys. Additional tools like a blog, a podcast, and a regularly updated salary report keep you in the know.

Draft offers clients quality content writers on demand; for you as a freelancer, it offers you unlimited work that matches your interests, availability, and skills. Once you’re approved to write for Draft, you can view available projects on your dashboard, claim anything you want to work on, complete the work, and upload it onto the project portal. Clients can then submit feedback or request revisions, as well as set people as preferred writers if they like their work (this is what you want, so you can get first dibs on projects).

To get started as a writer, you’ll need to apply on the Draft site and complete a test writing project. If you pass, you’ll have access to the project dashboard, where you can not only claim projects but also track any projects you’ve claimed and completed. Writers get paid weekly via direct deposit and can track their payments through the platform.

5. ProBlogger

Over 300,000 bloggers rely on ProBlogger as their go-to resource for blogging education and resources, from blog posts and podcasts to courses in blog creation and growth. Blogger Darren Rowse launched the site after turning his blogging hobby into a paying profession, and now he’s paying it forward in an effort to help other bloggers make money doing what they love.

Contena is an invite-only online program and a suite of job-search tools aimed at helping budding writers land freelance writing and remote work. The site says that its self-paced program has helped its members earn millions from remote writing. Yes, it’s a membership, so the program isn’t free; pricing isn’t readily available on the site, but this review — based on the writer’s experience in trying out the onboarding process — states that membership costs $497 for one year or $997 for two years.

While there are many positive reviews of Contena, the same writer above states these reviews are driven by affiliate income. However, the site offers a 30-day guarantee that should put your mind at ease, and the online course could be worthwhile if you’re just getting started with freelance writing. Our best advice? Do some thorough vetting before shelling out any money, but don’t be afraid to invest in your education if the material is worthwhile.

8. LinkedIn

You may be familiar with LinkedIn as a place to create a professional profile and connect with colleagues in your industry. However, it’s also a job marketplace where you can upload your resume and browse job listings. As you apply to roles of interest, LinkedIn may recommend adding certain skills to your profile, such as search engine optimization or WordPress. You can also take quizzes to have skills badges added to your profile, helping you stand out from the crowd.

Having your resume ready to send can be helpful when you’re applying to multiple jobs at once; jobs marked as “EasyApply” let you apply directly on the platform. Be sure to build out your LinkedIn profile to highlight your achievements, request recommendations from people you know, and showcase your best professional self.

As a new freelance writer, finding part-time or full-time freelance writing jobs online can feel like an uphill battle. You might think everyone has more experience than you, or that you’ll never make it without the right network. 

The good news is that neither of these statements are true. While there are more ways to find writing opportunities the further you progress, there are still great ways to score your first few freelance writing jobs. 

Here’s how. 

1. Content mills

One of the first places that freelance writers find writing jobs is through content mills. These sites are often marketplaces or platforms that pair up a writer with a content writing job. You’ll find gigs for technical writing, producing press releases, ad copy, and various other formats. However, you often need to send many submissions and pitches out before getting a response. 

If you’re just getting started with freelance writing , content mills and marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr can seem tempting. After all, you don’t have any past clients to refer work your way, and a limited network to find leads through. 

In fact, freelance writer Alex Boswell says:

I scored my very first [freelance writing] client on Fiverr where I charged him between $120-$160 a piece (between 1500-2000 words) and he has been a repeat customer. I think the secret to Fiverr is having a thoroughly awesome cover letter as well as a specific angle. (Mine was being an active academic meaning I have top notch research skills /tools/resources.)

There’s a catch though. You won’t make big money this way, and you won’t find those star clients or job types you really want. You’re also often ghostwriting , where there’s no byline and you can’t use the work for your portfolio.

There’s a low fee associated with content mills, but they can offer a high volume of work. This is one of the reasons they’re a popular choice for new freelance copywriters and content writers looking to earn a steady income. 

You could land your first freelance writing job with a content mill for $20 an article, but it’s a place you’ll want to move on from pretty quickly. There are better ways to find freelance writing jobs out there. 

2. Cold pitching

Some freelance writers look to cold pitching as a way to attract new clients to their business. This is where you get in touch with someone that’s never heard of you before, to pitch them your services. 

Some freelancers send cold pitches by email, phone, or through Twitter or LinkedIn profiles. Cold pitches are often a quick “hello”, followed by a pitch designed to get the potential client on a call to discuss how their writing services can tie into the brand’s marketing strategy. 

Cold pitching can work for certain writers and specific clients, but it’s not something we recommend. After all, most of us don’t like our first interaction with someone to be a sales pitch. 

Instead of cold pitching to clients, try warm pitching instead. This is where you pitch to people who already know you. It’s better suited to intermediate writers, so we’ll cover that in more detail in the section below.

3. Guest post

A great way to find freelance writing jobs is to show, not tell. The ideal way to do that is to have a portfolio of previous work, but as a new writer that’s tough. 

The next best thing? Write guest posts for the kind of businesses you’d love to work with some day. 

Writing articles as a guest blogger has so many benefits to you as a writer and a freelancer. You get the opportunity to refine your communication skills and build a relationship with the editor . You can work on your writing skills, and learn to follow a style guide and brief. 

You’ll also start to get a feel for which freelance writing niches , topics, and types of web content writing you enjoy the most. You could discover a real talent for making complex technical language feel easy, or uncover a love for writing about retail trends. 

One of the major benefits of guest blogging is the opportunity to build a portfolio. After your first guest post you’ll have one sample for your portfolio, and every future post is another that you can use to demonstrate your skill, talent, and personality.

6. Warm pitching

Earlier, we talked about why cold pitching isn’t a great way to get freelance writing jobs. That doesn’t mean all pitching is bad though–you just have to do it in the right way. And that way is warm pitching. 

Warm pitching is where you introduce yourself and your services to someone that’s already aware of you. They don’t have to be a close connection, but you’ve interacted a few times. Maybe you follow them on Twitter and engage with their content, or you’ve replied to their email newsletter and had a conversation about something. 

The difference between cold pitching and warm pitching is that you’re not an unknown. Instead of being an unfamiliar face, the person you’re pitching knows you. They’ll have you down as someone that’s friendly, engaging, and interesting. 

Plus, they’ve probably checked out your social media profile or website. The first time they’re seeing your name doesn’t happen inside their inbox.

When you’re warm pitching, you aren’t starting at zero. You’ve already established some kind of connection. This makes it more likely that your potential client will trust you and consider hopping on a call with you to discuss working together, or send a test project your way. And that first project could become a long-term freelance writing job. 

7. Freelance writing job boards

Clients don’t want to spend forever searching for the perfect writer. To simplify things, they’ll often post an ad on a job board and wait for the applications to come to them.

Instead, people choose to offer job opportunities for writing work to people within their network. In a busy world where people want to find a good writer fast, networking is a powerful skill to learn. 

Networking can get a bad reputation. It isn’t all about schmoozing people so that you can make or find a sale in the future, but more about building relationships with the people around you. 

Everyone has a network, even if it’s small. Your friends, family members, and people you’ve worked with in previous jobs are all part of your network. Let them know you’re available for freelance writing jobs, actively engage in conversations and moments, and look for ways to help them out too.

Sometimes the best freelance writing jobs are the ones where you know the product or subject inside out. You can effortlessly write about the product, because you’re a long-time fan. This makes pitching products and tools that you already use a great way to find writing gigs.

This approach works especially well for software writers. Use CoSchedule to manage your marketing? Pitch them a guest post idea, or ask if they’re hiring freelance writers. You already know the product inside out, so you can suggest a potential article or write an in-depth guide for them.

Social media platforms like Twitter aren’t just great places to network with other freelancers. They’re a useful source of freelance writing jobs too. 

Commissioning editors and content leads will often take to Twitter or LinkedIn to let their network know they’re open to pitches or seeking a writer. When they do, reply, make a connection, and find out more about their needs. 

With so much content posted every day on social media, finding these opportunities can be challenging. To make it easier, follow prominent writers and experts in your niche.

If you’re in the B2B SaaS world, for example, follow people like:

If you see someone post an opportunity once, follow them so you’ll see the next one in your feed. Look at who other freelance writers follow and see if you’d be interested in hearing from them, too. 

Don’t forget to make use of the search function, too. Twitter and LinkedIn both make it easy to search for content using keywords like “looking for a writer”, “writer wanted”, or “open to pitches”. Scan the results for relevant opportunities, then make a friendly introduction. It could lead to your next freelance writing job. 

12. Job listings

While you’re not looking for an in-house article writing job if you’re freelancing, keeping an eye on relevant job postings can give you an insight into which companies might need your support. 

Companies that are investing heavily in their content marketing efforts or are launching a new project are likely to have high content needs. While they’ll build some of that capacity in-house, it always helps to have freelance content writers on hand to pick up writing projects if the team gets too busy. That’s where you can step in. 

Run a job search on a platform like LinkedIn . You’ll likely find a lot of remote jobs or ones in major cities like New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Research the company in more depth, and use LinkedIn to find relevant contacts in their digital marketing department. Connect with and build relationships with their content strategists, staff writers, content managers, CMOs, etc. Once you have, you can make a warm pitch to them to ask if they need any support from freelancers. 

Even if you don’t score a freelance writing job from your new connections directly, as people that work in the content writing space they’re usually pretty great people to have in your network.

Where to find high-paying freelance writer jobs

As an experienced writer, you’re successfully working with clients on projects that interest you, but it’s time to take it one step further. You’re now on the lookout for those dream clients, high-paying freelance writing gigs, and a freelance writing career that you love. 

All the work you’ve done so far on crafting high-quality content and building your network has paid off. You can now tap into your network for referrals, upsell existing clients, and make your leads come to you. Here’s how to make it happen. 

13. Referrals

You’ve worked on some freelance writing jobs already, and impressed clients with the results you’ve achieved for them. Now it’s time to start converting those existing client relationships into potential referrals. 

Referrals from clients who know and love your work are really effective. They’ve had a great experience with you, and pass that trust and enthusiasm on to the person they’re referring to you. Think of a referral as a warm lead that’s excited to meet you.

Clients sending referrals your way is great news for you as a writer. Not only does it mean more work and the chance to work on higher paying projects, but it’s a testament to your quality of work. Not every referral will convert, but the fact you’re receiving them shows you’re well on your way to finding more high-paying freelance writing gigs. 

14. Existing clients

Sometimes your ticket to high-paying freelance writing jobs is right in front of you. If you’re already working with great clients, find opportunities to convert those jobs into more valuable contracts. 

One way to do this is to ask to upgrade your contract. If you’re writing one blog post a month for a brand, suggest upgrading to two or four instead. Make the suggestion alongside a reason why it’ll help them – for example they’ll be able to achieve their goals faster, or you have an idea for a series that could translate to more leads. 

You could also switch up your arrangement entirely and suggest a retainer. This is where you’re contracted to your client for a set number of hours or deliverables per month. Retainers give your clients more freedom over how they allocate their budget and your time, and they give you the guarantee of a set income per month. And if this works well, you can always increase your retainer. 

Another way to earn more money from existing clients is to offer additional writing services. If you currently write blog content for a client, why not suggest a whitepaper that they could use as a lead magnet. You score an additional freelance writing job from them, and they get a valuable piece of content. 

Wanting higher paid writing gigs can also be a sign that it’s time to raise your rates. After all, you only have a set number of hours every week. It’s how I went from earning $2,000 per month to $10,000+ per month without working more hours. 

The goal might not be to get more clients, but to maximise your earnings from the clients you do have.

15. Get leads through your website

Once you’ve gained a reputation as an expert writer, the leads end up coming to you. You no longer need to trawl job boards or send pitches to brands. 

Instead, your hard work, reputation, and portfolio bring clients your way.

These potential leads will usually make their way to your website. Often they’ve Googled your name, so take time to optimize your website for SEO . Other times they’ll find you through the engaging author bio you’ve included in your existing articles and guest posts. 

Your freelance writer website doesn’t need to be flashy (a simple WordPress site will do), but it should give your lead plenty of great reasons to approach you.

Create or commission a simple website that features an insight into who you are, the type of freelance writing jobs you enjoy, and a stellar portfolio. Some writers reference their rates on their website, while others keep this private–the choice is yours.

Sure, starting a podcast might feel like another marketing activity you don’t have time for. After all, it can take lots of time to get a podcast off the ground (and actually make it worth your time.)

“The Working From Home podcast has been a great source of clients for me. Although not why I started it, I’ve written guest blogs for some of the companies I’ve interviewed, had several referrals and one of the companies hired me directly after appearing on the show.”

Into women’s style, beauty, entertainment, wellness, or culture? You can reach digital editor Perrie Samotin on Twitter about contributing to Glamour. There are no published guidelines for pitching, but they’ve paid .27 a word in the past.

Oprah Magazine is launching a new digital version this fall to continue inspiring women to live their best lives – online. No guidelines are available, but you can reach out to digital director Arianna Davis via Twitter . The print version has paid $2 a word, but expect less for digital.

5. LiisBeth

LiisBeth publishes content focused on feminist entrepreneurs, creators, and leaders committed to gender equality. Writers of all gender expressions can email pitches to Margaret Webb or reach out to her on Twitter . They have pay rates listed in the guidelines, the lowest offer being $250 for personal essays to $800+ for policy/issue analysis.

Have a teen or connect well with teens? You can reach out to editor Samhita Mukhopadya at Teen Vogue via email to pitch topics related to teens taking on the world. Average pay is $0.30 a word for digital publication.

Calling all birders. You can reach editor Martha Harbison via Twitter . They’ve reportedly paid as much as $0.40 per word for stories on birds and their habitats.

8. Discover

Like to geek-out on science? Writers with proven expertise in medicine, physics, technology, space travel, paleontology and other science-based topics can pitch ideas to editor Eric Betz via Twitter . The pay rate for digital has varied widely, but the most reported was $0.52 a word. Discover encourages writers to keep pitching if not accepted the first time around.

9. Hakai Magazine

Hakai uses short- and long-form journalism to report on coastal ecosystems. This magazine publishes work from freelance writers in two different sections; News & Views (300-800 words) and Features (1,000-1,500 words). On Twitter, you can find managing editor Adrienne Mason or senior editor Shanna Baker . They’ve paid as much as $1.05 a word.

10. Smithsonian Magazine

Unsolicited proposals are accepted by Smithsonian Magazine from experienced freelancers pitching stories on art, history, science & innovation, and travel. You can reach editor Brian Wolly on Twitter . The pay rate varies, but the average is .36 a word.

11. National Geographic Travel

Love to explore the natural world? This online magazine has several sections with various editors. Check the guidelines for the right editor to pitch your ideas on beautiful, unique, and wild places to visit. You can also try pitching to [email protected] , and they’ll direct you to the right section. Pay varies by section as well, but the lowest is $0.50 a word.

Established writers with a beat on the architecture of homes can pitch to editor Mike Chino on Twitter . Dwell reportedly paid $1.00 a word for an article that appeared in print and online. Pitches must include photos of lived-in dwellings – no staged images. Follow-up is encouraged, including resending your pitch a few weeks later if unanswered!

Write about architectural gems near and far – the houses, interiors, gardens, and landscapes of iconic places, designers, and celebrities. You can email your pitch to Digital Editor David Foxley . They’ve paid as much as 1.00 a word for digital articles.

14. Early American Life

New writers and photographers are encouraged to submit queries on American life from colonial times to the mid-1800s on topics related to antiques, architecture and decorating, history, studio crafts, and travel. Send daring personal essays, fiction, and poetry to this ad-free magazine. Yes, you read that right — you might be able to get paid to write poetry by The Sun. You can pitch editors Sy Safransky or David Mahaffey by submitting online. The Sun has various sections, and they outline pay rates on their submission page. They’ll pay as much as $2,000 for longform essays.

22. The American Scholar

COVID-19 stay-home orders have hit the travel industry hard. For example, Delta Sky magazine laid off it’s entire staff, ceased operations, and poof went all their freelance writing jobs, too. An avid backtracker, adventure runner, or ultramarathoner? Write about all things running for Runner’s World. Hailey Middlebrook is the digital editor. They pay $1 per word for content that runs in both print and online.

Have expertise in the recycling industry? Scrap is the trade magazine of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries. They pay freelancers for content on market trends, new regulations and legislation, new processing and handling equipment, and management and operational techniques . While there are many factors that distinguish high-earning freelance writers from struggling ones, high-earning freelance writers are ultimately more successful not because they are more qualified or more skilled than struggling ones. Instead, they are more successful because they know how to get freelance writing jobs that pay really well.

And this has little to do with how much a freelance writer is demanding; you could charge a lot and earn a lot, and you could charge little and still struggle to get jobs.

A quick search for “legal writers” on platforms like Upwork brings up profiles of several freelance writers, including the following:

As you can see, the first writer charges up to $200/hour and has billed over $400,000 in freelance work. The second writer, on the other hand, charges a meager $30/hour and has billed just $2,000.

Of course, while there are obviously several factors involved, the point I’m trying to make is that making a good living as a freelance writer is about more than just how much you charge. Competing on price won’t necessarily give you an advantage because there is more than enough money to go around – research shows that the content marketing industry is worth over $300 billion.

In other words, there is a lot of money to go around; you just have to know where to find the better paying jobs.

🤔 How much can you earn doing freelance writing jobs?

The following are the typical rates for freelance writing work according to the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), the most authoritative source on freelancing rates:

According to the EFA, you can expect to earn between $40 and $100 per hour or between 20 cents and $2 per word for freelance writing jobs depending on the nature of the writing. Of course, some freelance writers earn much more, and some earn much less, but this is often determined by a number of key factors such as:

• Your level of experience : Experienced freelance writers will always earn much more than beginner or entry level freelance writers – often by a very significant margin. According to Make a Living Writing’s survey of 1,400+ freelance writers , freelance writing earnings are strongly correlated with level of experience – with experienced freelance writers (2+ years) easily earning double or more what entry level freelance writers (less than one year) are earning for the same jobs. This fact was corroborated by similar research on freelance writer pay from ClearVoice.
• Content type matters : You’ll get paid more for advanced kinds of content such as whitepapers, copywriting, technical writing, and ghostwriting than for much simpler ones such as SEO articles or blog posts. The more difficult it is for other writers to do the kind of writing you’re doing the more you’re likely to earn.
• Specialization and qualification : Most freelance writing jobs do not require you to have any form of qualification and aren’t too specialized. The few that do – such as those in the legal industry or the healthcare industry – often pay significantly more, though. If you have any qualification or experience level that can help with these specialized writing jobs, it will be a good idea to capitalize on it.

I generally charge $0.30 to $0.40 per word (or about $300 to $400 per 1,000 words article), or more depending on the nature of the project. I used to struggle to charge $50 per article, until veteran freelance writer Carol Tice once told me, point blank, during one of our discussions that I was undercharging and asked me to increase my rate. I immediately doubled my rate for new clients and they paid. I did that again for the next ones and they paid as well.

This made me realize a key fact : you’re often worth as much as you’re willing to charge. In a lot of cases, you’re probably undercharging and should just go ahead and increase your rates!

While the above is a non-exhaustive list of different types of freelance writing jobs you can do, the real question is how do you actually get these jobs?

Of course, many people are quick to rush to online job boards and online job platforms . While these are often a good first stop for beginners, relying on just online job platforms isn’t always a good idea.

According to the freelance writer pay survey from Make a Living Writing that I earlier referenced, virtually none of the high-earning freelance writers surveyed use job boards and online platforms like Upwork and content mills. Instead:

• 55% use word of mouth and a strong referral network
• 24% send pitch letters
• 11% receive inbound leads, via online profiles on writer sites, LinkedIn, etc.

So what are the most effective ways to get freelance writing jobs? Below are 15 methods (broken down into three different categories):

• Content marketplaces
• Inbound and outbound marketing methods
• Freelance writing job boards and online writing jobs listings

If you have the required level of experience and some social proof, content marketplaces and job directory websites can be some of the best sources of writing job opportunities for you. Basically, content marketplaces are platforms that facilitate a connection between freelance writers and brands engaging in content marketing .

Many content marketplaces make it easy for freelance writers to earn a decent rate and some even allow writers to earn really well. This is done by publicly advertising these rates on their platforms and carefully vetting clients who use their platform to ensure compliance with these rates.

For example, CloudPeeps publicly advertises $100 to $250 as the rate for blog posts on their rates page and an hourly rate of up to $80 per hour for writers. Scripted publicly advertises an average minimum of 10 cents per word, and these are just two of about seven content marketplaces listed below.

1. CloudPeeps

CloudPeeps is an online marketplace designed for businesses that want to leverage the power of content marketing. Unlike most of the other marketplaces listed below, they aren’t focused just on content as they also facilitate other marketing-related activities (such as social media management, web design, and PR), but they stand out for their effort towards ensuring freelance writers get paid fairly for their work.

Freelance writers can expect to earn between $100 and $250 per post on CloudPeeps, between $30 and $80 per hour, and between $500 and $1,500 per month when they use the platform. Besides the fact that they limit registration to about 23 countries, setting up an account with CloudPeeps and using their platform is a relatively easy process.

2. Scripted

Scripted is another quality content marketplace you should consider signing up for to get freelance writing gigs. Scripted is specifically designed for freelance writers and copywriters, and they are seeking freelance writers who can create blog posts, website copy, email newsletters, and social media posts for brands looking to utilize content marketing.

I also particularly like Scripted because there is no ambiguity about what freelance writers using their platform can earn. They make it clear that their freelance writers earn an average of ten cents or more per word.

3. Contently

Contently is another online content marketplace that freelance writers can rely on to get writing jobs and opportunities.

They connect writers with brands who need help with their content, and jobs available on the platform include blog posts, reported articles, whitepapers, and much more depending on client needs.

Based on official information available from Contently, rates start at $255 for articles (300 – 500 words) and can be as much as $2 per word for whitepapers depending on what vertical you’re writing in. Again, as I’ve earlier said (about becoming specialized to increase earnings potential), specialized niches like finance, enterprise tech, and law pay the most on this platform.

4. ClearVoice

ClearVoice (owned by Fiverr) is another content marketplace that connects freelance writers with brands that need content, presenting you with an opportunity to get writing jobs.

While I couldn’t find official information about rates for ClearVoice writers, third-party information shows that they generally pay between $250 – $400 or more for articles.

Quietly also connects freelance writers with brands and agencies in need of quality content, and boasts having brands that include Adobe, Dell, Slack, and Unbounce as clients.

You can sign up with this platform to increase your chances of getting paid writing jobs.

Finally, on the list of online content marketplaces you should consider joining to increase your chances of getting freelance jobs as a writer is Copify. Depending on what part of the world you’re located in, you’ll be redirected to the relevant site and given an opportunity to join their platform.

While there is no official source for information on rates for freelance writers, third-party research shows that Copify pays a lot less than most of the platforms on this list. You can expect to earn up to $50 per article with this platform, however.

7. Set up a writer website

One of the most basic things you can, and should, do to position yourself to start getting freelance writing jobs is to set up a writer website.

A writer website can serve as both a direct and indirect way to get potential clients to hire you. If done right, a website serves as your online shop/location where potential clients can easily find you, shows that you are a freelance writer who knows what he/she is doing, helps you highlight your services and relevant social proof, and allows you to give potential clients an option to get in touch with you.

There are several ways in which your writer website can help you attract freelance work:

• Through people discovering it via the search engines and reaching out to you.
• Through people discovering it via referrals and reaching out to you.
• By linking to it in guest posts and your outreach efforts.
• By using ads to drive traffic to it.

There are some key pages your website should have, however:

🤺 An about page that gives necessary personal and professional information about you in a clear and descriptive way; it should contain a personal picture, your background information, your experience and qualifications, and how you plan to help your clients.

Once all of the above are in place, you also want to make sure to highlight important testimonials and social proof on key pages of your website; this includes on your homepage, on your about page, and on your services page.

8. Cold pitch potential clients

Cold pitching is my all-time favorite method for getting freelance writing jobs. I’m particularly in love with cold pitching for the following reasons:

• Anybody can do it . You can send cold pitches and get your services in front of potential clients regardless of your freelance writing experience or how authoritative your website is.
• You get results really fast . While some methods of getting clients (like blogging) can take months, cold pitching can yield results super fast. In fact, during a cold pitching campaign I once closed a freelance writing deal worth $625 in just two hours.
• It is scalable ; during my most recent cold pitching campaign I closed deals worth five figures with minimal effort. If I wanted to, and if I had the ability to do the work, I could close deals worth six figures in months. To achieve this same result through blogging, investing in ads, or other means will require a much greater deal of effort and resources.

With the above benefits outlined, how then do you go about cold pitching effectively. There are a few key things to put in place:

• Set up your website and online presence : When you send cold pitches to potential clients, you should realize that you are a stranger to practically all of the people you’re cold pitching. You’ve had no interactions with them before and they probably haven’t heard about you. So guess what they do first when they see your email? If it isn’t trite enough to be ignored, they do a background check on you by searching for your name on Google. If they find a website and an established online presence you’ll be at an advantage.
• Ensure your cold pitches are sent from your professional email address : While many freelance writers looking for job opportunities send cold pitches using free email addresses like Gmail and Yahoo Mail, this is something I strongly advocate against for a key reason: spammers abuse free emails a lot, and as a result most people ignore them or even have filters against them. A professional email address associated with your website (e.g. yourname[AT]yourwebsite.com ) stands out on the other hand and ensures you’re more likely to be taken seriously.
• Keep your cold pitch simple and to the point : Remember, you’re a stranger in this person’s inbox so he/she doesn’t have the time to read an epistle from you. Assume that you’ve wasted the opportunity you have if a prospect needs to spend more than a minute to read your cold email. All the better if you can keep it under 30 seconds.
• Do your homework : Take a few minutes to do your work. Know the name of the person you’re cold pitching and the name of the person at the organization you’re pitching, then ensure you address the person by name.
• Specify what you can do in the email : Mention what service you’re offering and how it can help the person reading the email. Don’t ask the recipient of your message to click a link to read more about your services. That’s a mistake. Most people won’t click a link in an email from a stranger.
• Highlight social proof you have in your email : If there’s anything significant you’ve done with your writing, be sure to highlight it in your email. This includes having a popular blog, having been featured in popular publications, having won an award, having published a book, and or having helped clients achieve certain key results with your writing.
• Be ready to follow up : You’ll often have to follow up a few times before getting a response to some of your cold pitches. It is important to also learn how to craft a good follow up email.

To give you an idea of what a good cold pitch looks like, below is the screenshot of the exact cold pitch that I used to close a writing deal worth $625 in two hours (which eventually led to five figures from the same client over time):

9. Optimize your LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn is undoubtedly the biggest social network for professionals and, if used the right way, it can serve as a great platform to promote your freelance writing services.

I’ve had many potential clients (like the one below) reach out to me with freelance writing opportunities on LinkedIn:

There are several ways to use LinkedIn to get freelance writing jobs. Below are some tips to help you maximize the platform:

• Use a clear and professional headshot.
• Make sure your LinkedIn profile clearly highlights your experience and organizations you’ve worked.
• Make sure relevant terms and keywords are present in your profile to ensure your profile comes up when people search for these terms. Examples: “b2b freelance writer,” “Seattle freelance writer,” etc.
• Ensure your LinkedIn profile highlights your portfolio and strong pieces of content you’ve helped create.

The following screenshot, of freelance writer Elna Cain’s LinkedIn profile , is a good example of a well-optimized LinkedIn profile. Besides using a clear and professional headshot, it is clearly descriptive and uses relevant keywords that make it easy for potential clients to discover Cain when using the LinkedIn search feature.

10. Tap Into Quora’s increasing popularity with decision makers

While many are familiar with Quora as a leading question and answer website where you can get insights on pretty much any topic, very few realize that Quora can also serve as a good source of freelance writing jobs.

With over 300 million monthly users , 54 percent of whom report an annual household income of more than $100,000, and 37 percent of whom are likely to be in management positions, there is an abundance of writing job opportunities on Quora – if you know how to use it.

Below is a response to a particular Quora thread that was made by a freelance writer looking for jobs:

There are a few key steps to get freelance writing jobs on Quora:

• Make sure your Quora profile is properly set up. The same rule always applies: use a professional headshot and clear profile description with relevant keywords and that highlights your expertise.
• Ensure you are highly active on Quora, particularly in sections related to your niche and the services you offer; for example, you should be active where content and writing as related to your industry is being discussed.
• You should regularly contribute relevant and in-depth articles to questions relevant to your industry and, if possible, highlight the fact that you are a freelance writer for hire (directly or indirectly).

11. Use SEO to build a long-term stream of clients

SEO is something I strongly believe every freelance writer should know and take advantage of; besides the fact that a lot of potential clients expect you to have at least a basic knowledge of SEO , it can also help you rank your website for relevant keywords that potential clients are searching for.

SEO can help you get freelance writing opportunities directly and indirectly. Here’s how you can use both the direct and indirect approach to SEO to get writing jobs:

This approach aims to rank your freelance writer website for relevant freelance writer terms so that when clients search for these terms they come across your website.

For example, your website could be optimized for the term “b2b freelance writer,” or “Whitepaper writer,” or “Maryland freelance writer.” You then focus on gradually building relevant backlinks and creating relevant content aimed at helping your website get to the top results where you become the first website that potential clients see when they search for those terms.

The advantage to this approach is that, if done right and your website starts ranking well, you will keep getting client inquiries and new clients for months and years for as long as you maintain your rankings. The disadvantage is that, depending on how competitive the term is, you stop getting new freelance writing inquiries as soon as your rankings begin to drop.

I once published an ultimate guide to guest blogging, built some quality backlinks to it, and watched it slowly climb up in the search engines until it was on page one for several guest blogging related terms. During this period, I kept getting a lot of inquiries from people who wanted me to do both guest blogging and other freelance writing work for them.

This is just one piece of content that has brought in a great deal of freelance writing work for me; I have others, too.

These pieces of content rely on the indirect SEO approach to getting clients; where you create a solid piece of content that promotes your freelance writing services and then try to get that content to rank well in search engines.

If you have a blog, or a freelance writer website, then it might be a good idea to publish a few of these in-depth guides and resources, optimize them to lead clients to your services page, and promote them with link building efforts such as guest blogging and outreach. Over time, these articles will start to rank for relevant keywords and result in potential clients who are interested in your services reaching out to you.

12. Start guest blogging the smart way

Guest blogging is one of my favorite methods for getting freelance writing jobs and it has been responsible for six figures in freelance writing income for me over the years.

There are two ways you can use guest blogging to get freelance writing jobs:

The aim of this approach is to get potential clients to reach out to you directly as a result of your guest post. Often, this is done by writing a solid and relevant guest post on a highly authoritative publication and including a link to your services in your guest post bio.

Here’s an example bio from a guest post on Problogger:

As you can see, the bio clearly shows that the author of the guest post is a professional guest blogger and links to a page where the author can be hired.

When using the direct approach to guest blogging, there are a few things you should focus on:

• Select a highly authoritative blog that has a lot of traffic ; since you are hoping that people will reach out to you after reading your guest post it is important that people read it. You don’t want to guest blog on a publication that has no readers.
• Ensure that the publication you are writing for has your target audience and that your guest post is highly relevant to both your target audience and the services you’re offering.
• Ensure your guest post bio clearly shows that you are a freelance writer that can be hired (as demonstrated in the above example with the Problogger guest blogger).

Indirectly :

Another way to get freelance writing jobs by guest blogging is through the indirect approach. The focus of this approach is on using guest blogging as a means to build relevant links to your writer website or other pages on your website.

When you use this approach, the links in your guest posts can be contextual (relevant and in-content) or in your bio. There are a few ways you can go about it:

• Ensure your guest posts are relevant to your website/services/page you desire to link to, or that there is a section of your guest post that is relevant, and then link to this page in that relevant section.
• You can link directly to your homepage, especially if you’re trying to rank for key terms that potential clients are looking for e.g. “b2b content writer,” “Seattle freelance writer,” etc.
• You can also link to key content on your website that is designed to qualify potential clients and get them to reach out to you. This could be an ultimate guide, a case study, or some other relevant piece of content aimed at directing people to your freelance writing services.

Both of the above approaches can be used with great success to get freelance writing jobs, and both have been responsible for generating six figures in freelance writing income for me over the years.

13. Pitch new services to existing clients

Oftentimes our focus is on getting new clients when trying to get freelance writing jobs. We seldom think about our existing clients as a source of new jobs and lose out on a lot of income in the process.

In my experience over the years, it is a lot easier to get high-paying freelance writing gigs by focusing on existing clients instead of new ones. These clients know you and have a feel for what you can do, so you don’t have to do much to convince them to give you work.

Earlier on in this article, I had listed 20+ different services you can offer to potential clients; if you’re offering just one or two of these services to a client, then you have an opportunity to earn a lot more – by offering additional services to the same client. Doing this has easily added six figures to my bottom line over the years.

I initially realized the power of offering additional service to existing clients when a client in the CPA education niche that I had been working on guest posts for asked me if I can write landing page content for their website.

I accepted the offer and would eventually earn five figures just creating landing page content for this client within a few short months; earning significantly more than I was earning doing what I was initially hired for. I kept thinking about how I could have lost this opportunity due to thinking I only had to work on what I was initially hired to do.

Ever since, I’ve relied on pitching existing clients with new services to get more jobs and increase my earnings.

For example, one of my major clients is a leading comparison site in the web hosting niche; while the client initially hired me to help with ghostwriting guest posts, I noticed they kept publishing new content on their blog that I didn’t help create. I simply pitched them my blog content services, was commissioned to write about 27 reviews for five figures and have since been given other writing-related projects (including a tutorial-style blog post for mid four figures). This is despite the fact that this wasn’t what I was initially hired to do.

14. Take advantage of website flipping marketplaces like Flippa

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Manfred Kirchheimer, ‘Indispensable’ New York Filmmaker, Dies at 93

For decades, he meticulously crafted short films and documentaries in relative obscurity. Then, in his 80s, he enjoyed a burst of productivity and acclaim.

Manfred Kirchheimer, a filmmaker who was drawn to stickball, jazz, subway graffiti, gargoyles on old buildings and the memories of aging immigrants, and who after decades of slowpoke perfectionism earned a reputation as a master of nonfiction cinema, died on July 16 at his home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He was 93.

The cause was cancer, his son Gabe said.

Mr. Kirchheimer often wrote, produced, directed and edited his movies as well as photographed them. He worked hard to get funding from nonprofit sources, and he earned a living as a freelance film editor and a film professor at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan from the mid-1970s until the mid-2010s.

His camera moved at the speed of people-watching: lingering for an extra moment to relish a certain scene, turning to something else in the bounty of street sights, then returning his gaze somewhere it had already been, hungry for a second helping.

He found dignity and delight in what other New Yorkers overlooked or even disdained. Mayor Ed Koch, for instance, called subway graffiti blight, but Mr. Kirchheimer exulted in the subway exteriors of the late 1970s as traveling canvases. He made the subway the main character of his 1981 movie, “Stations of the Elevated,” with a soundtrack by Charles Mingus that suggested that graffiti could have the same rough, improvisational genius as his jazz.

The subway cars that Mr. Kirchheimer filmed featured a portrait of a hitchhiking snowman; a verdant landscape overseen by a smiling, big-eyed sun; and cryptic messages in bubble letters — “HEAVEN IS LIFE,” “a minor disaster!” He followed the trains from Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, at the city’s northern edge, past South Bronx tenements whose stoops hosted playing children, all the way to the beaches of Coney Island.
