Question 3: An e-mail, short for electronic mail is a store and forward method of composing, sending, storing, and receiving messages over electronic communication systems. It is the quickest way to communicate in writing. (See Main Course Book, Page 7)

Question 4: Think of an occasion when you led a team for a competition. Were you successful? Did you exhibit any of the qualities given in A.2.? If so, to what extent were these qualities exhibited and how did it lead to your success? Through an e-mail, share your experience with a friend. Answer: Date:     04/01/20XX From:   [email protected] To:       [email protected]

Subject: Role Play Competition There is no mail from you for a long time. Hope you are fine and in the pink of your health. Recently I, along with some of my classmates, participated in a role play contest.

We were given the roles of a council of ministers. I was made the Prime Minister and other students were given the roles of different ministers. We had to find a solution of growing criminal activities in one of the metro cities of India.

First of all, I collected all relevant information from the internet and shared it with my colleagues. We divided various responsibilities among ourselves. After coming to a consensual solution to the problem, we discussed about the presentation which we had to give in front of the judges.

I had to give introductory speech and concluding remarks. Rahul, being the home minister, had to discuss about coordination with security agencies. Other students were heading various wings of paramilitary forces and had to give presentations accordingly.

On the D-day, we displayed a perfect team spirit and won accolades from the audience. It was a sight to watch when we lifted the winner’s trophy.

I can hardly wait for your comments on my achievement.

Question 5: An Exemplary Leader Read a short story about an exemplary boss. (See Main Course Book, Pages 7-8) Summary This is a story about an exemplary leader. But finding his colleague too engrossed in work to enjoy leave, the boss goes on to take the colleague’s children to the exhibition. This small gesture is enough to win the heart of the colleague.

Work in pairs and select the appropriate words for the following characters. Answer: The Scientist: The Boss Ans. The Scientist: tireless, laborious, diligent, workaholic The Boss: unassuming, sympathetic, kind- hearted, thoughtful, sagacious

Question 8: A story can have more than one ending. Rewrite the end of the story you have just read. You can begin like this…….. “As he drove home, he felt guilty for having let his children down. He reached home, entered the house and saw his wife and children watching the television…” Answer: As he drove home, he felt guilty for having let his children down. After parking his car, he walked towards his drawing room with heavy steps. He was expecting a strong reaction from his wife and children. But to his utter surprise he saw them engrossed in their favourite programme. Finally, he got some courage to say sorry for being late. Once his wife narrated the whole story of how the boss came and took them to exhibition. It was even more surprising for him. Deep in his heart he developed more respect for his boss.

Empathy of a leader is one of the important characteristics in his character.

Question 10: The Process of Writing: CODER In your written work, it is advisable to follow the process outlined below. (We call it ‘CODER’ – Collect your ideas; Organise your ideas; make your first Draft; Edit your work; Revise your work.) (See Main Course Book, Pages 10-11)

Question 11: Now, using the ideas given below, write a speech on ‘The Role of Youth in Realising the Dreams of Dr. Kalam. (Refer to CODER) (a) fighting for equal rights (b) fighting corruption (c) empowering the masses (d) looking for jobs within the country (e) active involvement in social issues (f) promoting national integration (g) equal participation of women in all fields Answer: India is a nation of youth with more than 50% population comprising of youth. Dr. Kalam, the great scientist and visionary, has dreamt of a strong India and a resilient India. Now, the question comes how the throbbing young population of our country can contribute towards realizing Dr. Kalam’s vision.

As per Dr. Kalam, the Indian economy is growing at a fast pace but what we lack is self-confidence. The youth of today can gain self-confidence by fighting for equal rights. Most of the government machinery is ridden with corruption. The young population can bring about a revolution by increasing awareness among masses. Once the whole nation is awakened about ill effects of corruption then it can be surely rooted out. India is growing exponentially. The fruit of growth has failed to reach the masses. This is because of a lesser degree of empowerment of masses. By voluntary participation in mass awareness through programmes like Shiksha Mitra youth can help educate the masses of India.

Brain drain has been a big problem. The way Indian economy is growing in there is no dearth of opportunities in India. Young people should avoid looking for greener pastures abroad. If all of us will work collectively then India will be the best country to work in and to live in.

Society is an integral part of our life. We should also give back whatever we can to our society. Even small gesture is sufficient. We can organize free classes for slum children in our neighbourhood or we can organize a blood donation camp for the needy. Because of a handful of fanatics, India’s national integration is in danger. By channelizing our energies in proper direction we can reduce and ultimately eliminate this sense of suspicion and hatred for each other. This will go a long way in ensuring national integration.

Although India has come a long way since independence yet we see MPs squabbling over women’s reservation in the Parliament. In certain other fields also there is lesser representation of women. With proper education facilities and proper awareness women can be helped to make their mark in each and every field.

To recapitulate let us remember that youth are the torch bearers of tomorrow. If we lay a strong foundation today we can build a strong future. This will help us become a stronger, self confident and a great country where everyone will respect others’ freedom.
