Introduction:

Teachers are the ones who play a very vital role in shaping our future. From the Pre-Kinder Garden to your Post-Doctoral fellowships, they teach, impart knowledge, share ethical values, and imbibe morality, thereby shaping our personality as a strong one.

My Teacher:

Throughout our lives, we will be having many kith and kins who will hold a special place in our hearts. For me, one such person is my teacher. All of us, for sure, will definitely agree to the fact that the kinship between us and our kinder garden teachers could not be well-defined. I like my nursery teacher, so much. There is something very magical about her. Maybe, she was the first teacher in my life or maybe, she was very sweet in talking to all of us, I am unable to portray why she is always my favourite. I relied on her blindly.

Unforgettable Memories:

I have some cherished memories with my teacher. Whenever I think of those memories, it makes me blissful. On the last day of my nursery school, I started crying at the very thought of leaving her and having a new teacher. I had fallen sick due to crying for hours together. I skipped my food. My parents were not able to do anything. They called for her to make me feel better. My teacher travelled a few miles across the city and reached the hospital. She, then, said that she would never forget any of her students and asked me to write to her. I started writing to her every week from then on and she replied to every letter of mine. Till date, I look at my teacher as my second mother and she guides me in all my difficult situations.

Conclusion:

Having a good teacher who can share an amalgamated relationship with the students is a boon. A good teacher should be a good mentor, a philosopher, a guide, a friend and above all a surrogate parent to the children. I am lucky that I had gotten one in my lifetime.

My favorite subject is English and my most favorite teacher is Chitra Ma’am. She teaches us English. She likes me a lot and appreciates my hard work. She joined our school one year ago. Before that, I was not so good at English. But after attending her classes, we have all become much better at this subject.

I like her for many reasons. First of all, she teaches the lessons in a very interesting way. Even when we have doubts or questions, she never gets upset with us. Her best quality is her loving nature. She would come to school daily without missing a day.

Her dressing sense is nice. She wears simple salwar suits. She always speaks to her students softly and respectfully. I eagerly wait for her class and do my English homework on time. Chitra Ma’am puts a lot of effort in explaining every chapter.

There are many activities given at the end of every lesson and she makes us participate in all of them. Not only that, but she also encourages us to take part in drama and poem competitions. Since her first day, she made a rule for us.

All of us has to speak in English during the English period. Every student tries to talk in English even if the sentence sounds improper. She has taught us to never laugh at each other’s mistakes. This has improved our spoken English in a great way. Now, we are able to talk in English with more confidence.

Another great quality of hers is that she treats every child equally. After explaining the lesson to us, she asks each one of us different questions about the chapter. Sometimes, we also love to talk about our personal lives, like what do we like about our lives, how our parents work hard for us, and things like that.

When we get confused or need an emotional support, she is the best person to talk to. Her advice and suggestions are always positive. Last month, on teacher’s day, all the students wished her and brought presents for her. We also sang a song to her.

I made a beautiful greeting card for her and a red rose with it. She accepted it with a smile and thanked us for everything. I feel grateful to have such a gentle and great teacher in my life who supports me in every way.

In school, you tend to interact with a lot of people who can either impact your life positively or negatively. A teacher is one neutral person who will manage to strike a balance between the positive and the negative. Teachers have a huge responsibility that we students may not understand. All in all our teachers try their best to provide an education, guidance and discipline despite the challenges we might impose on them. The life of a student is entirely dependent on a teacher because most of their time is spent in school rather than with parents that is why teachers play a major role in shaping the lives of young children through school.

Who Is my favourite Teacher?

I have several teachers now that I am in high school but there is only one whom I can relate to as “the teacher” because of the impact he has made in my life. The teacher is male, of Indian origin and has a funny accent when he speaks. He is married and has three children. Actually, one of his children is my age and I know him through tennis practice because he comes to train with us sometimes. I like him because his sense of humor gives a good learning experience for the students. He is a math teacher and he is very good at what he does. Students tend to make fun of him because of his accent but he make fun of it himself, which gets even funnier. This teacher has been a great mentor to me and other student ever since we joined high school. I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

Coincidentally, he also coaches my tennis team and we meet out on the field. We have won several awards as a tennis team under him. I feel connected to the teacher through his mentorship and he has become like a school parent to me because whenever I have an issue, he is free to help me out.

How the teacher has impacted my life in school .

Mentorship goes along way depending on the approach used. When I first joined high school, I did not have much confidence in myself. This teacher mentored me and made me believe in myself. The good thing is the attention he gives t is students because most of the times, he follows up on the performances and ensures that he does everything he can to help students improve academically. He has also been a role model to me through his way of doing things. He is dedicated to his work and he is an achiever. Through following his footsteps, I have been able to dedicate myself into studies and sports, which has helped me to achieve my goals.

In conclusion, good teachers are hard to find but when you find one, make the most out of them.

The word “teacher” depicts a person that teaches. English dictionary defines teacher as “a person who teaches, especially one employed in a school”. A more recent definition of teacher in the linguistics field is “a tutor that interacts with the learners in order to facilitate good learning”.

Types of Teachers

Old method teachers: the teachers found under this method adopt the rigid mode of impartation of knowledge. They control the class the way a king would rule over his subjects. Old method teachers are less concerned about the welfare of their learners, they are syllabus-oriented.

New method teachers: the tutors under this model are student-oriented. They are more concerned about their learners and their various levels of understanding. They accept and promote contributions in class unlike the old method teachers. New method teachers encourage the inquisitiveness of their students.

Attributes of a Teacher:

A standard teacher has all or most of the various characters imbedded in them:

• Compassionate
• Open-minded
• A good counselor
• Friendly and most importantly
• Approachable.

Attributes of My Favorite Teacher:

Personally, I see my teacher as a mini-god because he leaves his mark on me. He influences my life in ways that enables me affect changes wherever I find myself.

He is a perfect example of the new model teachers. Basically, he is student-oriented. In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

During his teachings, he pays close attention to the expression, mood, sitting posture and carriage of his students. This tells him when his students are lost, sad, worried, hungry, sick, away in dream land or simply tired.

Once he is done processing the information gotten from our faces, he either finds a way of brightening the mood of his students, bringing them back from the dream world, or ending his class without breaking his stride or alerting the whole population of students to what is currently going on.

It is only normal for a human being to reflect his mood whenever he is talking or interacting, but my teacher hardly ever allow his bad, horrible moods interfere with his teachings.

Outside the classroom, my teacher is approachable, fatherly, and jovial. He entertains all and no one is excluded from his open arms, smiles and affections.

He is a good counselor who is always ready to help me out of my tight corners. He gives twenty first century advises in a fatherly way.

Although, due to my teachers lenient ways with students, some students tend to be lazy, disrespectful, stubborn or rude. He has a way of being firm, maintaining class control while teaching.

In conclusion, my teacher has all the attributes and more of a new method teachers. He is capable of combining all modes of teaching, he is compassionate, passionate, and friendly. From my interactions with him, I can confidently say that he is one of the best teachers around.

A good teacher is a blessing for the students in their early years and helps them understand the world; learn moral values along with education. My Teachers, My Role Models

During my formative years, I have come across many teachers who have influenced my life for the better. Having being studies in a convent school, I got to face a much-disciplined environment during my school years. The teachers, although were very polite in their behaviour, at the same time ensuring that we all followed a disciplined life. We were taught how to inculcate these values in our daily life so as to be better human beings when we grow up and face the world. Although all the teachers were good, there is one teacher whose teachings I just cannot forget. She is Ms Kirti Bhushan. Her teachings have been so powerful and impactful that I can still feel them during my day to day decisions even today.

My Best Teacher

Ms Kirti was my class educator as well and took participation in the daily activities with us as well. She was a strict instructor anyway extremely amusing and mind in nature. At the same time, she was extremely restrained and dependable. She did her work perfectly with the class at a perfect time without getting late. I liked her, particularly as she attempted simple approaches to show us beneficial things. We made the most of her class. She taught us English subject as well. She even made us giggle by telling heaps of jokes in the middle of when she taught. She likewise managed us exceptionally well amid any school or between school rivalry of the move, sports, scholastic, and so on. She instructed us to share things in class among our associates, for example, lunch or other required things.

Her Background

She was from Varanasi and completed her initial studies there itself. She took her higher education degrees from the Banaras Hindu University. She was extremely friendly and kind in nature. What I Learned From The Teacher Who Inspired Me

I’ve never really understood why more Oscar winners don’t thank their teachers.

Yes, family and agents and your “team” are a given, as are the countless producers you’re legally obligated to thank. Then there’s the dietician, the spin instructor, the Reiki master, and gurus of dubious origin. But what about the teachers who helped you get to where you are now?

I was lucky enough to have a lot of great teachers, but one in particular shaped the person I am today: Lin Robbins. She was my 8th-grade reading teacher. And while she was incredibly loud at times, and had those massive, red Sally Jessy Raphael glasses, I can still hear her laugh.

Miss Robbins’ enthusiasm was infectious. From the first day of class, she was always smiling and had boundless energy. She was no taskmaster, and there was no tough love, just excitement about what she could teach us. But it never felt like she was teaching, it was as if she wanted to share this really cool thing with you; it was effortless.

So, stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before, but Miss Robbins gave me a copy of The Catcher In The Rye . I don’t know why she did this—it wasn’t an assignment. She just gave me a copy of the book and said, “I think you'll really like this."

Now, I’m hardly the only person who's had an encounter with Catcher , and J.D. Salinger love is about as commonplace as your coworker’s obsession with the Fifty Shades series. But every 13 year old has to start somewhere, and there was something I immediately connected with in Holden Caulfield, something that resonated and made me feel a little less alone.

This connection inspired me to start writing, and I haven’t stopped since. After I moved on to high school, I would still drop by and share my work with Miss Robbins. A lot of it was terrible short stories about dog detectives (don’t ask). Some of it was lousy poetry (definitely don’t ask). But she read it all, and she told me the two most valuable words you can tell anyone at that age:

Keep. Writing.

Discover What Makes Them Tick

I couldn’t tell you what Miss Robbins saw in me—why I was given extra attention and care. But in hindsight, I know it’s impossible that I was the only one. She had a library at the back of her classroom with an open policy around borrowing books. She wasn’t shy about sharing her passion for literature.

If you stopped by Miss Robbins’ classroom, chances were good that some other student seeking wisdom and encouragement was there, too. She seemed to have an innate ability to find out what kind of push you needed to make you feel something.

I imagine that’s the hardest thing for a teacher to figure out—how to really reach and develop each student. Miss Robbins instinctively knew how to hone in on what a student was most excited about and cultivate that. That’s no easy task when you're staring down a classroom of 30 middle schoolers, but she took the time to invest in every one of us.

When you share your own passion, and engage your class, ultimately that’s contagious and inspiring. No matter what we were reading, Miss Robbins could find an emotional hook—something personal and relatable—that made you want to dig in. If a teacher can motivate a student to tear through a book in a single day, then they’re doing something right.

Don't Forget to Say Thank You

Years later, I found Miss Robbins on Facebook. I had tried a few times before, but it never once occurred to me to search for Lin instead of Linda. When I finally found her page, there were no updates or posts, just a whole slew of messages on her page: “I miss you; I can’t believe that you're gone.”

She had passed away two years before.

I haven’t sold a screenplay or a pilot, and I don’t know that I ever will. Work and family and life often get in the way. I doubt very much that I’ll ever attend the Academy Awards, and that’s OK. I’m an editor and a freelance writer, and I’m fortunate enough that I get paid to put words down on paper.

But, I know that I have to keep writing. And I also know who I’m thanking on any podium I get my hands on. Miss Robbins. I’m grateful that she saw whatever it is she saw in me, and that she gave me the nudge I needed to become a writer.

I never got a chance to thank her. So, don’t miss out on thanking your teacher-hero. They’re the ones who make us who we are.

You are compassionate:  Teaching is a very humanistic profession, and compassion is the utmost feeling of understanding and showing others you are concerned about them. A compassionate teacher models that characteristic to the students with her or his actions, and as a result students will be more open to understanding the world around them.

You are empathetic:  Empathy is an important trait to have and to try to develop in ourselves and our students. Being able to put yourself in someone’s shoes and see things from their perspective can have a powerful impact on our decisions and actions.

You are positive:  Being a positive person is not an easy task. Being a positive teacher is even harder when we’re always met with problems with very limited solutions. I have had many teachers in my lifetime and each one of them has affected my attitude toward education in a unique way. I have developed a different relationship with each one of them; and of course, I reminisce about some of my teachers more than other s. A teacher never knows which student he or she is going to inspire to achieve his or her goals. Sometimes, a teacher might feel that he or she has not done much for a student, but that student might feel that that particular teacher has highly contributed to his or her education and has undoubtedly affected his or her attitude about education in a positive way. The purpose of this essay is to describe a teacher who has positively affected my attitude toward education.

Furthermore, one of the greatest and unforgettable memories that stand above all of my experiences as a student was the time I spent with one of my high school teachers, Mrs. Sutton. Mrs. Sutton was the most patient teacher I had ever had. She treated her students the way she would have wanted to be treated if she were a student; that was, with respect and dignity. It is with all honesty when I say that Mrs. Sutton was always in a good mood. I never once saw her lose patience with her students. Mrs. Sutton motivated me to wake up five days a week with a “ready for school” mentality.

Moreover, it is effortless to mention Mrs. Sutton’s passion and devotion for teaching. She always wanted her students to go to her for help. I became so comfortable with her that I would go to her after school for help with difficult homework assignments from other teachers. She always had a smile on her face and helped me with an open heart. I could see Mrs. Sutton’s passion for teaching from the very first day I met her.

To sum it up, Mrs. Sutton has shaped my attitude and changed my conception about education. One of the things I have learned from Mrs. Sutton that has strengthened and is keeping me going in life is “Every problem has a solution. You may not find the solution today, but it is there.” Mrs. Sutton’s contribution to my self-concept about education is one of the reasons why I have managed to come this far in life.

Voices: My most inspiring teacher

Everyone has that one teacher that was their favorite because of how inspiring they were, or because they made the student look at things in a more positive way.

Throughout my school experience, the most inspiring teacher to me was Ms. Henderson. Ms. Henderson was a Spanish teacher at Comeaux High and taught me my junior year. She never failed to amaze me and she was always there for students when they needed.

From the first day to the last, she always gave great advice on different things. She would stress the subject of following your dreams and staying focused on what is best for you. If she noticed someone was upset, she would address them and try her best to help. Ms. Henderson wanted everyone to be happy and to help each other out with tough times. Not only did she want people to be happy, but she wanted them to be adventurous too.

Traveling interested her a lot and she would always tell us about these outrageous places she has been to. She gave advice on how to save money but she wanted us to experience new things and places. Making friends and getting comfortable with people was another thing she stressed. She wanted us to get out of our comfort zones, get all dolled up, and go out with friends.

All of these things taught me how to be a happier person with myself. She helped me a lot with overcoming my shyness. Traveling has never interested me as much as it had before until I heard about all of the trips she went on. She made me look at things differently and more positive than they were before. Ms. Henderson made me want to live my life to the fullest and to try new things.

Out of all the teachers I had, I picked Ms. Henderson because she had the most faith and motivation. Although she taught Spanish, she never failed to inspire everyone around her. She is one of the very few teachers that I will remember in my lifetime. I am happy to say that Ms. Henderson was the one teacher that has inspired me the most.

Following the viral success of a letter sent by a headteacher in Lancashire , you got in touch with all sorts of stories from the classroom .

From the funny tales about an eccentric educator to truly heartwarming comments about the ones which really made a difference, hundreds of commenters contributed to the thread. Here are the best of their stories.

"We have a job going here..."

It wasn't until after I had left uni that one of my old teachers had the greatest impact on me. Through the sixth form we had had run in after run in, we did not get on. I qualified as a teacher in the same subject, and I wanted to tell him. His response was 'we have a job going here...'

In a funny way that meant more to me than anything after our long term clashes in the classroom.

On a serious note, Maureen Clarke, geography. Showed an interest in me, not just me in her classes.

Going the extra mile

I'm also going to take this as an opportunity to praise what an amazing job a friend of mine has done in his first year as a teacher (a few years ago now).

Graduating with a 1st from a top university in maths, he was really keen to go into teaching. Got a placement at an inner city london school as a teaching assistant and ended up working with the dyslexic special need children.

One in particular year 9 girl had been written off as a hopeless case as she just couldn't seem to do even the most basic questions, no matter what past teachers had tried, and as a result she was a very disruptive and aggressive classroom influence. So after working with this girl for a few weeks my friend began to notice a pattern in her work.

So he took home all of her work from the last year and spent a weekend examining it. He found out that far from being terrible at maths her dyslexia meant that the numbers and symbols etc appeared to move for her on the page and therefore the questions she was answering were the not the ones originally written down.

On working out this set pattern, he then rewrote all the next weeks lessons and low and behold the girl suddenly was getting the 'right answers'. By the end of the term she had been moved up to the top maths set and her attitude had complete turned around.

I like to tell this as a good story of how a teacher going the extra mile can really change a students life. Without him, theres a good chance the education system would have written this girl off and despondent and dropped out. Instead she went on to get good GCSE's and an A at A level maths and further maths before going on to University.

The value of a staff v 6th form football match

Mr Whitehead, my French teacher in Secondary school, was an OK French teacher, but dry in his delivery, too strict, and we all feared him as a result.

He was physically appallingly co-ordinated, and overweight, but nonetheless put himself forward for the staff v 6th form football match at the end of the year. He wasn't a flashy player like the nippy English teacher Mr. Beacon, but he was solid and lumbering.

At first my mates and I wanted him to fail, but as the match wore on and he weathered the jeers from us all, we actually found ourselves admiring his persistence, and ended up cheering him on madly as he thundered down the wing to snatch a the winning goal. That's how I remember it, anyway.

What I learned was that you shouldn't let anything hold you back if you want to do it - certainly not the sneers of those standing on the touchline.

The next Monday in class he was still horrible to us.

"You'd best keep history if you're going to apply to Oxford or Cambridge,"

Having been repeatedly dissuaded from applying to Cambridge by my head of year, who had an enormous anti-Oxbridge bias, my history teacher overheard me talking about whether I was going to drop any of my AS-Levels at the end of Year 12. She said 'Well you'd best keep history if you're going to apply to Oxford or Cambridge, which you should definitely be thinking of.'

After being told for months that there was no point, for her to present it as something that I ought to be doing gave me a lot more confidence. And she was right because I got in and did well.

An unforgettable English and History teacher

"Come to my woman's breasts and take my milk for gall," screamed Phyllis Davis, clasping her ample, angora-clad bosom with one hand while holding her well-thumbed copy of Macbeth in the other.

An unforgettable moment from an unforgettable English and history teacher who transformed the lives of all those her talents touched - a nugget of pure gold buried in the unlikely soil of an overcrowded and underfunded secondary modern school during the austere post-war years.

Her infatuation with her chosen subjects was as infectious as the Great Plague - which, with other seminal events and characters from the nation's past, she brought vividly to life - proclaiming loudly while she paced the wooden boards of our classroom as if it were the stage of the Old Vic.

She selflessly fanned the smallest literary spark, scrawling encouraging marks in red ink across our essays and reading her pick of them out loud as the authors sat and blushed with ill-concealed pride.

It was Miss Davis who formed the unforgettably named Spondon House Parent Teacher Junior Dramatic Society and commandeered the canteen for performances of the period plays that flowed from her fertile imagination on to the pages of school exercise books.

We dutifully swapped our grey flannels for Elizabeth doublet and hose and dirndl skirts for Georgian ballgowns, made our own scenery and lighting, and performed on a home-made stage of wooden pallets donated by a local brewery at the behest of our indefatigable producer/director/writer/prompt and general dogsbody.

With school days almost over, Miss Davis stepped in to save me from becoming factory fodder. She persuaded my hard-up mother to let me stay on for an extra year so she could coach me to become the first secondary modern school child in the county to sit GCE 'O' Levels in English as an external candidate..

The gamble paid off. I scraped through the tests and my ever-resourceful tutor bullied a local newspaper editor into granting me my first break in a journalistic career that was to last a lifetime.

To my undying shame, I never did properly thank this wonderful lady for the flying start in life she gave me. Along with the old school, she is now a part of the history which so fascinated and inspired her - and us.

I earnestly hope, dear Miss Davis, that this belated and inadequate little tribute somehow reaches you - and that, in assessing its merits, you will be as generous as always with that red-ink pen.

"Believe it!"

The headteacher at the sixth form that I will be boarding at in August inspired me. He'll be retiring this year. I visited his school (it's a school for deaf students) last year in October with no hopes of getting in because the local authorities refused to fund my place. He looked at my predicted GCSE grades (I have just finished at a mainstream secondary school) and told me that I would be coming to his school to complete my A Levels, and told me, "Don't dream that you're coming to [school name]; believe it!". I spent the rest of the day crying in happiness. His actions have inspired me and I hope to be able to help deaf people as he has helped me.

And the deputy headteacher at my old secondary school who always encouraged us and gave us hope. He told us that each one of us had the ability to do something phenomenal, had a wonderful gift and that we had to believe in ourselves; and that grades did not decide whether we were gifted or not. He is one of the sweetest teachers that I've had.

A real love of literature

I still remember the day my English teacher, Mr Wilson, put aside the curriculum and simply read to us from Hemingway's Death In The Afternoon for a whole lesson.

It was inspiring and liberating at the same time, because, not only did he communicate a real love of literature to us, but he fueled and sanctioned whatever streak of anarchistic rebellion might be lurking in our hearts.

For many years I avoided reading Death In The Afternoon, although I went through a stage of devouring pretty much everything else by Hemingway, for fear that it might not live up to that wonderful memory.

A few months ago, I decided to get a copy and see what I had been denying myself.

It is rubbish.

Heroes don't always triumph: but don't let that stop you

Mr.James Chappelow - History. A man from a modern extreme poverty background but with a sense of self and of the value of his work that let him rise above pride. When teaching our A-level course on Victorian history he would tell anecdotes about what it was like to grow up in the 70s in the bottom of British society. It fleshed out for us the suffering of the serf of the mediaeval era or the labourer of the industrial revolution in a way still loaded with meaning after 20 years. Everything we learned of his personal life - as rumours always circulate about teachers - showed him in a good light.

Mr. A.R.Ford - Chemistry. An entertaining and witty speaker whose personality belied the somewhat old-fashioned appearance he had. He somehow had the ability to find exactly what sense of the meaning of a thing wasnt clear to any individual pupil and then flesh it out in glorious colour by some off the cuff comparison.

He also once gave an assembly - a rare thing for him - in which he discussed a situation that had arisen during the war, when a crippled bomber was incoming to a coastal base and had announced its intention to ditch just off the beach rather than risk the runway. He discussed the plans being made, the careful advice being transmitted to the pilot on sea conditions and winds.. and the decision of one RAF mechanic to start swimming out into the bay, to be in position to help the surviving crew from the aircraft as it sank.

Something went wrong - either a misjudgment of conditions or being right in the path of the landing, and the mechanic was lost. His body was never recovered. Mr.Ford went on to discuss how this guy whose part in the war would never have been remembered in the official histories had done something totally unexpected of him and beyond the call of his duty because he felt nothing else would be a useful thing for him to do then. He discussed the posthumous decoration for bravery - but also the fact that life is complicated and not every brave act has a benefit to society, and that we should understand that heroes dont always triumph, but not let it stop us.

"Thank you for listening so patiently", he said. (We were spellbound). "It meant a lot to me", he continued.

"And I'll always be proud of my father for what he did"

We rose to our feet to applaud. Some, wiping our eyes.

"If anyone deserves to go on a trip right now it's you."

When i was in year seven my mother (a wheelchair user) was made redundant and my dad was unemployed due to a severe motorcycle accident a year before. I was caring for both of them and my younger sibling. We were due to go on an history trip but i didn't have the £10 the trip cost. A few days before the trip my history teacher rang my mum and asked why we hadn't paid yet and my mum explained that we had no money coming in at the moment. The teacher said to sign the permission slip anyway and she'd sort something.

the next day the teacher grabbed me at break and handed me a £10 note. "just give it back to me in class with your permission slip. You're one of the best historians for your age I've ever met and if anyone deserves to go on a trip right now it's you."

I seem to recall bursting into tears all over her...

"Dr Wager taught me the relevance of history."

My history teacher was a quiet, middle-aged, Welsh Phd graduate who was awkward and couldn't control a class. We had to call him Dr Wager which seemed strange to us as we didn't understand at the time a Dr could be more than a physician, such was the dull, stolid, collective ignorance of our cohort.

I had him for three years from 13-16. In the first two years I messed around with the other fools in the class, trying and often succeeding in getting a rise from him. The usual stuff; locking him in the cupboard, hiding his briefcase, talking in class. He would ignore us at first, continuing to talk over the rising noise until finally he lost it and went for one of us little bastards in a spit flecked rage. We loved it.

But in my last year of school something happened. I think I realised that if I didn't knuckle down I'd fail my exams so I and a friend shifted our seats to the front and began paying attention.

Dr Wager was at first wary of our new enthusiasm, often glancing at us as if waiting for the practical joke to materialise. But after a few weeks, realising he had a keen audience he took to the task and imprinted on me and my desk mate his deep fondness for 20th century history. Referring to his ancient, yellowing notes and countless badly videoed episodes of The World at War he made history real to us. How many of us can say we are passionate about what we do? I think he can.

I passed my exam with an unexpected A grade. 24 years later I still can clearly recall sitting on those wooden school chairs underneath his long, hairy nose listening as Dr Wager taught me the relevance of history.
