A savory spinach-and-feta crêpe that makes your mouth water just looking at it. A steaming bowl of butternut squash soup with a dollop of sour cream and sprinkle of chives. Sparkling crimson raspberries floating in a fizzy flute of champagne.

Food is not just sustenance, but a rich experience . While taste is important, food that is plated and presented well is more attractive to customers and can set the tone for the entire restaurant.

Presentation and plating can draw attention to the specific ingredients in a dish, whether for aesthetic or practical reasons. For anyone considering a career as a chef , a strong grasp of plating and presentation techniques is vital for continued professional development. These skills help culinary professionals stand out as they train, stage, and begin to work in a variety of environments.

Why Is Food Presentation Important?

Think about a perfectly plated meal you’ve enjoyed that engaged all five of your senses. Maybe it was an expertly crafted uramaki roll with razor thin avocado slices, a dusting of panko, a drizzle of unagi eel sauce, and a ginger-wasabi rose embellishing the plate’s rim. Between the greens and oranges, the spicy and salty, the shapes and textures of the garnishes… you may have decided to make the restaurant your go-to sushi joint.

An experience like that sticks with a customer for much longer than a meal that involves mediocre presentation, and creating that kind of memory is exactly what chefs are looking for. Well-executed food presentation can create a sense of professionalism in the mind of eaters and offers an exciting element of a meal that many can’t recreate with the same skill in their own cooking efforts.

In the digital age, strong presentation can also make dishes more apt to be photographed and shared via social media . While there are definitely pros and cons around the prevalence of pre-meal photos shared on sites like Instagram, it can be an effective way to generate attention and sales for many restaurants.

Food Plating Techniques

Important considerations to make regarding the element of appearance include the color, size, and pattern or texture of the plate.

It may be especially helpful to look at the plating and presentation process as generally following a series of steps. This starts with choosing a plate, then deciding how the main dish and core sides are arranged or layered. From there, it’s common to move onto sauces to create visual contrast and shapes that aren’t easily rendered with more solid food. Finally, the garnish provides a finishing touch.

Bright colors work well against a dark background, while more neutral or subdued colors can use a white background to create some visual excitement. Besides the colors of the foods, different techniques for adding color might include the use of sauces, spices, and garnishes like fruits or flowers.

Thinking about the ratio of food to plate is another technique that involves some artistry. Serving a smaller portion of food on a large plate for more white space, or serving dishes in miniature receptacles can be interesting ways to present food masterfully.

Of course, you have to balance practical and artistic considerations – food should never be difficult to eat nor excessively messy because of the vessel it’s served on or in.

Beyond plates and bowls, the arrangement of foods is key. There should be a star item, one that takes top billing and is also likely the largest portion on the plate. This approach avoids visual competition and instead allows the sides to support the main dish.

It’s also important to think in three dimensions, as the height of food on a plate can also entice diners. Stacking items for a layered look can be visually appealing and make the meal appear more substantial than it would scattered across the plate.

  • Cook meals with a variety of colors and complementary textures to give your meal some visual appeal even before plating.
  • Default to white plates, leave 1/3 of the plate empty, and add different foods in odd numbers to achieve a balanced look.
  • Layer proteins or main courses on top of filler foods like rice or noodles, and use herb or sauce garnishes to add finishing touches.

Step 1 Avoid a monochromatic color scheme.

  • When you're planning meals, think ahead about the colors you want to feature on the plate. You might not be able to represent all the colors of the rainbow at every meal, but challenge yourself to have as much color as possible.
  • If you realize you're about to serve several like-colored foods, like grilled chicken and mashed potatoes, adding a serving or two of fruits and vegetables is a fantastic and easy way to add pops of color. The richest greens, oranges, reds, purples, blues, pinks, and yellows on your plate probably take the form of fruits and vegetables.
  • If you're not sure how to add color, utilize garnishes. [3] X Research source Nearly any savory dish is well-served by a sprinkling of fresh chives, parsley, dill, or mint. Lemon and lime wedges are welcome alongside poultry and seafood dishes.

Step 2 Bring out vegetables' brightest colors.

  • Lightly steam them instead of boiling them. [4] X Research source Steaming vegetables makes them look appetizing and flavorful, while boiling creates the opposite effect. [5] X Research source Take broccoli, for instance: steaming broccoli turns it a fresh, bright green, and each floret retains its shape and texture. Boiling broccoli results in a mushy texture and a paler color, which isn't as pretty on the plate. The same holds true for asparagus, carrots, green beans, and many other vegetables.
  • Roast or sauté them with a little oil or butter. Roasted or sauteed vegetables look quite appetizing when they're allowed to caramelize a little in oil or butter. The bright orange or green of the vegetable is offset by brown, crispy spots. It's a delicious way to cook vegetables.

Step 3 Sear your meat and let it rest.

  • There are exceptions to the rule of searing your meat. For example, if you're serving braised beef , you'll have to think of creative ways to make the meat look appetizing even though it doesn't have a crispy crust. Serving it with a sauce is a good way to add visual interest.

Step 4 Cook fried foods carefully.

  • Fried foods often continue browning a bit after they've been removed from the hot oil. Carefully monitor foods as you're frying them to make sure they don't get too dark.
  • Take pains to handle the fried foods gently so they look appetizing when you're ready to plate them. For example, if you need to check whether a piece of fried chicken has reached the correct internal temperature, stick the meat thermometer in a place where the resulting hole won't be visible. Step 5 Take texture into account.

  • The way you handle the food just after it has been cooked, and before it is plated, can really affect the texture. Pasta, for example, should be kept in water or tossed in a bit of oil just after cooking so that it doesn't start to clump. [9] X Research source Fried foods should not be covered with airtight lids because the heat from the food will end up steaming the breading and causing the food to get soggy.
  • Once the food is on the plate, a spritz of oil or water can improve its visual appeal if it looks too dry.

Step 6 Experiment with interesting shapes.

Step 1 When in doubt, choose white plates.

  • That said, there are exceptions. If you have a set of special plates with a pattern or a certain color scheme, it's fine to use them. Just make sure they complement the food you're serving instead of vying for attention.
  • Don't forget to take the rest of the table into consideration, too. Cutlery, glasses, and linens will enhance the overall appearance of the dish upon the table.
  • When looking for interesting tableware, try going to Asian grocery stores, craft or flea markets, and antique stores. You can find some very interesting tableware from all of these sources.

Step 2 Visualize the finished plate.

  • As a general rule, half of the food on the plate should be comprised of vegetables, one fourth should be comprised of meat or another protein, and one fourth should be comprised of a starch.
  • Start plating food in the center of the dish and work outward from there so that the food is centered in the middle of the plate.

Step 4 Follow the rule of odds.

  • To quickly add some crunch to a dish, try topping it with some crushed, roasted walnuts, almonds or pepitas.
  • A dollop of crème fraiche or some pieces of goat cheese can add a soft, creamy texture to savory dishes. Whipped cream or pastry cream is a good way to add a soft element to sweet dishes.

Step 6 Layer foods to add height.

  • An easy way to start layering food is to serve the protein on a bed of starch. For example, serve a kabob on a heaping of rice, or serve grilled swordfish on a pile of mashed potatoes.
  • You can use sauces to layer as well. Ladle a pool of au jus, marinara, or whatever sauce you're using into the center of the dish, and arrange the other elements of the dish on top.
  • Aim to make foods look bigger, not smaller. Fluff up your salads, for example, instead of smoothing them down. Create a little cross-hatched stack of cooked asparagus instead of presenting it in one flat layer. [17] X Research source

Step 1 Use garnishes that enhance the flavor of the meal.

  • If you serve a dish with lemon or lime wedges, consider creating slender, pretty twists instead of slicing them into thick wedges. This might entice the diner to actually use the garnish instead of scooting it to the side of his or her plate!
  • Think outside the box and use garnishes you might not normally consider. Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon over a chicken dish, or a handful of pomegranate seeds over an otherwise ordinary salad. Choose garnishes that add a burst of both flavor and color.
  • In many cuisines, flowers are an acceptable garnish or a large inedible leaf sitting underneath the food. In broader Western culture, it's recommended that nothing inedible be served on the plate. As well, since certain garnishes can affect the flavor, choose carefully.

Step 2 Employ drizzles and swirls.

  • Rather than just pouring a sauce over your food, consider putting it in a squeeze bottle so you can create a pretty swirl or pattern. [19] X Research source If you don't have a squeeze bottle, put the sauce in a plastic food storage bag, cut a small piece off one of the corners, and squeeze the sauce through the bag.
  • Don't overdo it. The key is to add a touch of color, flavor, and texture without overpowering the main part of the dish.

Step 3 Make sure the plate is clean.

  • If you're serving the pasta with a protein, arrange it attractively on the heap of pasta. For example, if the dish includes shrimp, place the shrimp on top instead of burying the pieces inside the pasta heap.
  • Just before serving, you can mist the pasta with a bit of olive oil to make it glisten attractively.

Step 2 Present

  • Soups and stews tend to splash and run, so it's also important to make sure that the sides of the bowl or plate you're serving them in are wiped clean before serving.
  • Casseroles might also come out on the brown side. Serving them alongside a bunch of fresh salad greens is a good way to offset the neutral-looking main dish.

Step 3 Enhance desserts that taste better than they look.

  • Use a cookie cutter to create a neat shape. A star or leaf-shaped brownie will look more interesting than your basic square.
  • Serve it with mint. Adding a few fresh sprigs is a great way to enhance many desserts, especially fruity ones.
  • Sprinkle cocoa, cinnamon or powdered sugar on top. Choose the powder that contrasts in color to the dessert you made.
  • Sprinkle crushed peppermints on top. It'll look like you topped your dish with pink glitter.
  • Speaking of glitter, add edible glitter to the dish to take it over the top.
  • When all else fails, plate it with a swirl of whipped cream. [23] X Research source You can pipe it through an icing bag fixed with a star-shaped tip to create a visually pleasing shape.

A delicious meal appeals to more of your senses than just smell and taste. It must also appeal to the eye. Imagine sitting down at a restaurant, and in front of you is a beautifully plated dish, thoughtfully laid out and presented.

A perfectly plated dish can upgrade your meal immensely. Through the strategic placing of ingredients, you will automatically view the meal as a high-value. You’re also more likely to enjoy the taste and hold a higher opinion of the meal.

Plating the perfect dish is both an art and a science. Chefs and cooking enthusiasts must explore their creativity and play with color and texture while placing foods to create a visual appeal.

Start with a Canvas

To begin plating the perfect dish, you must start with a canvas, or in this case, a dish. While you may be tempted to pull any old plate from your cabinet, there is more to it than that.

You’ll want to consider the size, shape, and color of the plate you’ll use. Typically, chefs use white dishes because they contrast nicely with food. However, other colored plates can work very well, depending on the color of the food presented.

Your plate’s size should be large enough so your meal doesn’t crowd the plate, yet small enough to make the portion sizes look fairly filling but not too small. Pick a plate that’s too large, and your meal will seem insufficient. Pick a plate that’s too small, and your meal will seem like too much.

The Perfect Placement

Now that you have your canvas, it’s time to make some art. The placement of your ingredients is crucial for a perfect plate. This is where scientific facts come in to create aesthetically pleasing dishes.

The Clock Guidelines

Pretend your plate is a clock. Imagine the numbers along the edges to help guide where you should place certain foods. By following these rules, your meal will be evenly plated.

  • Between 12 and 3, you should plate your vegetables.
  • Between 3 and 9 is where your meat will sit.
  • Between 9 and 12, you’ll present any starches included in the meal.

Stay Symmetrical

According to science, people find things that are symmetrical more attractive than asymmetrical. Use this principle to your advantage and make sure that your plate boasts symmetry.

Utilize White Space

Don’t underestimate the power of using white space on your dish. To create the perfect plate, spread out your food and leave parts of the dish empty. This will make your meal look cleaner, more elegant, and overall more professional.

Moist Ingredients First

Creating the perfect plate means paying attention to every detail. This also applies to what foods to present first.

Place moist ingredients, such as mashed potatoes or purees, on the dish before other elements. You can then place the rest of your meal on top of or beside these moist ingredients to keep them from shifting and ruining your perfect plate.

Always Use Odd Numbers

When serving individual foods, always plate them in odd numbers. While we recommended staying symmetrical with the entire presentation, the human brain finds odd numbers more pleasing than even numbers.

For example, if you’re serving ravioli, plate five instead of four or six to achieve the perfect plate.

FINDING THE RIGHT PLATE

Which plate you choose can make or break your dish, says South African Chef Jack Coetzee. Try to avoid symmetry, it’s not very interesting. And you need to create some height on your plate. However, if you are blatantly going for symmetry,  then you can get away with it because it’s your intention. But the plates do look very average if you’re trying to do something and you end up with it looking symmetrical. You can follow his course on plating in our UFS Academy for a more visual explanation.

Here are a couple of take-outs he shares on the different shapes of plates you can use and their possibilities to present your food.

Using a rectangualr plate is effective if you have lots of small little garnishes that can wind their way through the length of the plate, making it look like a garden.

This is not the easiest shape to work with. You have to use the Rule of Thirds, which is a theory dictating how an image (in this case your plate) should be composed in order to create an aesthetically pleasing result. You basically break your plate up into a grid system of 9 block and try to avoid using the bull’s eye itself because that’s a so-called dead spot. Also try not to use any of the spots in the corners.

These are most commonly used. The same rule applies to your grid system on this plate, except you don’t have to worry about all the dead corners. Try not to get anything in the middle unless it’s deliberately in the middle.

A study from Oxford psychologist, Professor Charles Spence, suggests that the food presentation can actually make a dish taste better. 

In the study, Spence gave 60 people 3 salads and asked them to rate each one before and after they ate them. The salads each used the same ingredients, but presented them in different ways. One salad was put together with no regard given to presentation, one was neatly arranged, and the third was plated to resemble a painting by artist Wassily Kandinsky.

England also recommends “fanning” or shingling out slices of meat to show off its quality.

“Slice your meat on a 45-degree bias, and also slice against the grain of the meat for a more tender cut,” he says. “Show off that perfect medium-rare steak!” 

This presentation technique works equally well with fish and vegetables, too. Here are a few ways to present other ingredients horizontally:

  • When serving crudo, fan out wafer-thin pieces of tuna, salmon, and sea bass across the base of a plate.

Tang also stresses the importance of playing with contrasting colours. She avoids artificial colours and uses matcha, powdered sugar, or natural colours to catch the eye instead. 

“The way you present your food is hyper-important,” she adds. “The more time you spend on how you present each dish, the more visual interest you can stimulate in folks.” 

Restaurant owner Tanner Agar echoes that sentiment.

Agar recommends using bold colours to create appealing visuals. “The easiest way to add colour is to start working with more colourful ingredients. Stick to no more than six elements on each dish to prevent them from looking overcrowded.

“A properly seared steak with some fresh watercress and perfectly roasted baby potatoes will look better than the fanciest of plates with subpar cookery,” Welch says. “Proper cooking will give you a lot of contrast within your ingredients with both texture and colour.”

10. Express yourself

There’s an art in plating food; it’s where chefs can allow themselves to be creative and have a high impact on how guests perceive the dishes they’re eating. 

Chef Brian Poe believes that chefs should approach food plating and presentation just as an artist would approach their next piece. 

“Presentation should be approached just like art, cooking, and music,” says Poe. “Take a moment to relax and look at what the others are doing, learn a bit of the technique and then find your own voice and style.”

Believe it or not, we “eat” in more ways than one. Before we eat with our mouths, we eat with our eyes. Visual appeal is just as important as the tasting experience of the food. Before you even take that first bite, you’ve already judged the meal in front of you. The presentation of the plating makes an impression, even a promise, with the viewer. If the foodie is intrigued by the food, the artistic plating has done its job. If it looks good, you’re gonna wanna have it.

The art of plating may seem to too prestigious of a thing to university students to care about. As students who are always busy with studies and social life, we “never have the time” to even think about the plating of our food. We’re more like, “Just shut up and give me the food.”

In that case, think of it this way: If you went on a fancy date and he/she showed up to the nice restaurant to meet (fabulous) you in messy hair, a rumpled and wrinkled shirt, stained and ripped pants, near destroyed shoes… You can imagine the rest. Do you think that first impression of that date will entice you to a kiss later? Certainly not from me.

It may seem unfair, even rude, that I’m not giving them (the date or the food) a chance. But in a world run by appearances, they count. And sure, I may give them another try (as in talk and get to know the date or take a bite of the food), but first impressions truly do mean a lot to the overall experience. If we take care of ourselves, what we spend our time with should as well. We are the artists to our world, why deny ourselves the simple pleasures and creations of beautiful things like latte art and the plating of our food.

There should be fireworks. All. The. Damn. Time.

Well, that was a nice idea in theory. Paris held the first-ever Olympics opening ceremony to take place outside a stadium—and on one of the loveliest settings in the world, the Seine. Athletes paraded not by foot but by boat, waving flags from sleek cruising pontoons, as pageantry unfolded on bridges and riverbanks. The aquatic format promised to do more than just showcase the architectural beauty of Paris or convey the magic of strolling across the Pont Neuf with fresh bread in hand. It promised to offer the world—our ever more jaded, content-drowned world—something new to look at.

Unfortunately, that new thing was a mess. Some will blame the rain, which soaked the festivities for hours, adding an air of tragedy as athletes waved flags from within their ponchos. But even on a sunnier day, the ceremony would have served as an example of how not to stage a spectacle for live TV. The energy was low, the pacing bizarre, and the execution patchy. Paris tried to project itself as a modern, inclusive hub of excitement—but it mostly just seemed exhausted.

Olympics opening ceremonies are inevitably ridiculous affairs, usually in a fun way. The host nation must welcome the global community while cobbling all of the signifiers of its own identity into some sort of romping medley that also, ideally, expands that country’s image in helpful ways. London offered the Queen and James Bond, and also a tribute to the National Health Service. Rio hosted a rumbling dance party as well as a briefing on Brazil’s Indigenous history. Most important, both of those cities gave us good TV.

Beforehand, the Paris event’s artistic director, Thomas Jolly, announced his intentions to play with Gallic clichés. Key words— liberté , synchronicité , and so on—announced thematic chapters, but a narrative hardly cohered. Congratulations if you had the following on your bingo card: mimes, Louis Vuitton, parkour, Les Mis é rables , the cancan, lasers shooting out of the Eiffel Tower , allusions to ménages à trois. But credit where it’s due—I really did not foresee the Minions stealing the Mona Lisa and bringing it aboard a Jules Verne–style submarine. On reflection, that was the most educational part of the show: learning that a Frenchman co-directed Despicable Me .

One problem with this French fever dream is that much of it was prerecorded. Every few minutes, the telecast would cut to slick cinematography of a masked, hooded individual—that’s what the NBC broadcasters kept calling her, “the Individual”—sneaking the Olympic torch around. She went to the Louvre, where the paintings came to life. She went to a movie screening, where a Lumière-brothers film ... came to life. These segments hit with all the force of a cruise-ship commercial, while distracting from the novelty of having a ceremony on water in the first place.

The live components of the show weren’t much more vibrant. A bridge was converted into a runway on which fashion models and drag queens strutted with the gusto and precision of a forced march. Platforms over the river itself featured extreme-sports performers doing tricks that the TV cameras seemed suspiciously afraid of showing in close-up. Lady Gaga put on a feather-laden cabaret performance that was perfectly fine, save for the fact that “perfectly fine” shouldn’t be anywhere near the name Lady Gaga. (As it turns out, that performance was prerecorded too.)

One of the only showstopping moments made clear that the weird vibes of the ceremony could largely be blamed on the detail work. At one point, the camera cut to a woman dressed as Marie Antoinette and holding her own babbling, chopped-off head. The heavy-metal band Gojira broke into riffage, and flames fired. This was righteous. But then, not much happened. Viewers were left to grow bored with static, wide shots of the performance. Eventually, a fake boat wheeled into view, looking quite a bit like a prop from a high-school play.

The best bits took place firmly on land. The pop star Aya Nakamura danced with the French Republican Guard in a flashy meeting of old and new cultural regimes. Once the sun set, “the Individual” emerged in real life to ride a cool-looking mechanical horse down the Seine. (It must be said that this journey was interminable.) The Olympic cauldron was cool too: It resembled a hot-air balloon, and it rose into the air when lit. To finish things off, Celine Dion made her seemingly unlikely return to singing, heaving with emotion from a deck of the Eiffel.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that carefully composed, largely stable images were the highlights of a show that tried to reinvent the Olympic ceremony in fluid directions. My favorite moment was when the pianist Alexandre Kantorow played Maurice Ravel’s Jeux d’Eau from a bridge as rain puddled on his instrument. He looked sad and soaked but also unbothered, lost in music. He made me remember the word I’d been trying to think of, for one of those ineffable French feelings: malaise .

The camp has grown into a nationally recognized support network, welcoming youth from across the United States and Canada. Its year-round online programs extend the camp's magic beyond the summer months, providing mentorship and connection for campers.

The camp's founder, Louise—affectionately known as Rudy Rutabaga Riversong—was inspired by her own fond childhood memories of summer camp. As a parent of a child with food allergies, she understood the challenges of finding safe environments for her son. Determined to create a space where kids like her son could experience the same growth and independence, she started Camp Blue Spruce. The first session hosted 27 campers, and the camp has continued to grow, filling all available bunks within weeks of opening registration.

Rapela emphasizes the camp's significance: "Camp Blue Spruce has transformed to be more than a fun place for canoeing, games, and arts & crafts. It is also a safe space where kids who are often bullied or excluded can be their true selves and belong. This has not only filled a gap in the food allergy community but also fulfilled Louise’s dream for her child."

Ensuring Safety and Medical Support

The health and safety of campers is a top priority at Camp Blue Spruce. The camp employs a professional team of medical staff available 24/7, with Dr. James Baker from Baker Allergy & Asthma leading the medical team. "Our Medical Advisory Team has developed our medical protocols, and camp staff is trained in mental health awareness, First Aid, and identifying and responding to allergic reactions," says Rapela. Emergency responders are alerted to the presence of children with food allergies, ensuring quick response times in case of severe allergic reactions or other emergencies.

A Camp Experience Like No Other

Camp Blue Spruce offers three distinct tracks: a week-long overnight camp for kids aged 9 to 13, a Teen eXplorer Camp for 14 to 16-year-olds, and a Counselor in Training Program for high school seniors. Activities include swimming, canoeing, hiking, arts and crafts, and white-water rafting or kayaking excursions for the older campers.

Eating is a central activity at Camp Blue Spruce. The camp’s kitchen is free of the Top 9 allergens—milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. Meals are prepared from scratch using fresh, nutritious ingredients, and dietitians are available to assist with allergies beyond the Top 9.

"Meals are purposefully served cafeteria style, allowing campers to make their own food choices, some for the first time in their lives," Rapela notes. Fun food events like Pancake Pajama parties and Decorate-Your-Own-Cupcake Dessert nights are highlights of the camp week.

Addressing Social and Emotional Challenges

Living with food allergies often leads to social exclusion and emotional challenges. Camp Blue Spruce focuses on these mental health impacts, providing a worry-free environment where kids can find understanding and acceptance. "Participants become lifelong friends and allies," says Rapela. "The daily schedule encourages teamwork, trying new things, and creating strong bonds."

The camp's inclusive approach extends to welcoming campers with ADHD, mental health issues, and depression, as well as LGBTQ+ youth and participants from diverse backgrounds. "The bonds grow deep. At camp, everyone 'gets it.' Kids and teens can relax, be their true selves, and enjoy friendship," Rapela explains.

Memorable Moments and Future Goals

One of the camp’s most memorable moments occurred in 2017 when campers experienced the solar eclipse in the Path of Totality. "The campers gathered in the large lower meadow to view the event. As the sun rose for the second time that morning, fog and mist formed over the meadow. The campers jumped up and ran through the mist! An amazing sight to see," Rapela recalls.

Looking ahead, Camp Blue Spruce aims to continue expanding its programs and reach. By securing more funding, increasing social media presence, and enhancing community outreach, the camp hopes to welcome even more youth each year. Registration typically starts in mid-November, with 80 to 110 campers attending each week-long session.

SITUATION UPDATE AND RESPONSE

  • Massive landslides struck Kerala's Wayanad district in the early hours of July 30, burying a large area under debris, killing at least 107 people, and leaving many injured. The death toll is expected to rise as many people are still missing.
  • Huge boulders rolled down the hills, hindering the rescue workers' path. Despite heavy rains, rescue workers continued shifting the dead and injured into ambulances.
  • Several hilly regions in Wayanad district, including Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages, have been affected by a series of landslides, with the most significant impact observed in Mundakai and Chooralmala.
  • Chooralmala, which is not typically vulnerable to landslides and is 6 km away from the landslide epicenter, experienced 578mm of rainfall in the 48 hours preceding the landslide, significantly more than predicted.
  • To date, 93 bodies have been found, and 128 people have been hospitalized due to injuries. Out of the 93 bodies, 34 have been identified, and 18 have been handed over to their families after post- mortem examinations.
  • Sixteen bodies were found in Pothungal from the Chaliyar River.
  • The Iravahinji River is now flowing in two directions from its original course and Vellarmalla GVHSS is fully buried under clay and soil after the incident.
  • Red alert has been issued for Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
  • Kerala Electricity Minister has directed the restoration of power connections in the landslide-affected areas of Chooralmala and Mundakkai as soon as possible. The Minister has instructed that power restoration efforts be focused on all areas except for seven transformers in the disaster-affected region, which serve about 1,400 consumers.
  • Three kilometers of high-tension lines and eight kilometers of low-tension lines were damaged, with two transformers washed away and three transformers damaged. Currently, 350 families are without power in the area.
  • Rescued individuals from disaster-affected areas will be shifted to the nearest relief camps. Local self-government bodies have been instructed to provide clean drinking water, food, and other facilities to those in the camps and those isolated.

  • The NHM state mission director has been deployed in the district to coordinate local health activities. Temporary clinics have been set up in mosques and madrassas in Chooralmala, and a temporary hospital has been established in a polytechnic college.
  • Doctors from various specialties, including surgery, orthopedics, and forensic departments, have been deployed from Kozhikode, Kannur, and Thrissur districts. A team of private hospital doctors is also on-site.
  • Mortuary facilities will be increased, and mobile mortuary units will be utilized.
  • Medicines and equipment are being delivered to hospitals in the district, and ambulances and rapid response units are being moved to the disaster-affected region.
