Now streaming on:

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan  resumes his much-anticipated comeback with “Jawan” (Hindi for “Soldier”), a high-toned action-adventure about a well-meaning terrorist and his crack team of hostage-taking girls with guns.

Khan’s revival began a year ago with a prominent cameo in the otherwise meh mythofantastic superhero pic “ Brahmastra  Part One: Shiva .” Then in, January, he stormed the box office with the lead role in “ Pathaan ,” a manic spy thriller and the most recent installment in the Yash Raj cinematic universe. “Jawan” will probably delight Khan’s established fans, and maybe uninitiated viewers, too, if only because he’s comfortably playing the hits, now with somewhat greater conviction and a little more polish.

“Jawan” was produced by the star and his wife Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment production company, so it’s not surprising to see how well-worn and carefully navigated the movie’s contrived plot and conventional mood swings tend to be. This is a Shah Rukh Khan vehicle, and by now, that conjures certain formulaic expectations. Still, the makers of “Jawan” spend a little too much trying to convince viewers that we don’t  really  know Khan’s mysterious antihero, who, after an overproduced but still rousing flashback action sequence, takes a train-ful of commuters hostage.

Khan’s character, soon revealed to be Azad, the warden of a women’s prison, seemingly executes a woman in a burqa, all while wearing a goofy bald cap, which he soon rips off. Khan, in character, rasps out his expectations-flouting demands to the generically incensed negotiator Narmada (Nayanthara): get the Agriculture Minister to pay off starving farmers’ extortionate loans, or more people will die.

“Jawan” careens from one twist to the next, fast enough that it almost doesn’t matter how familiar and ultimately staid its story and set pieces often are. A few plot twists are also easy enough to anticipate. Azad romances Narmada and charms her impressionable ten-year-old daughter Suji (Seeza Saroj Mehta). He denounces various government officials and combats their corruption with a handful of bloody, media-amplified demonstrations. Azad speaks for the common people but behaves erratically, performing a little soft-shuffle dance surrounded by terrified commuters. He proudly and laboriously explains that he’s actually a good guy fighting the real enemy: public servants who do not serve the republic.

There’s an involved and agreeably goofy subplot that ties Narmada and Azad’s story with the movie’s opening scene, set 30 years prior in an unnamed village that may or may not be Tibet (somewhere near “India’s border,” terrorized by Asian soldiers in white star-studded green caps). If you’ve seen Shah Rukh Khan movies before, you won’t be especially surprised at how these two subplots tie together, though you may be delighted anyway. It’s a major plot twist that predictably takes over the back half of the plot and re-orients Azad’s plot so that viewers know that this time, unlike all the other times, it’s personal.

This time, there’s a nefarious weapons dealer, Kalee (Vijay Sethupathi), who is as malicious as he is violent. There’s also a surprise cameo from a big Bollywood star, whose presence isn’t really a spoiler if you pay attention during the opening credits. And be on the lookout for a duet dance number led by Khan and Deepika Padukone, who have great chemistry, possibly because they know that, by now, they don’t have to really compete for viewers’ affection. Oh, and a couple of the fight scenes are maximalist show-stoppers despite being over-edited and under-directed. Loud and rote, sure, but never boring.

The main reason “Jawan” doesn’t deliver more than what Khan has previously delivered is because its creators seemingly included every masala-style subplot they could think of. Still, “Jawan” is unlike Khan’s last two comeback trail stops because its creators are better at navigating its many hairpin twists and turns. Kudos to director Atlee, a former assistant director whose credits include the Rajinikanth vehicle “Enthiran” and its sequel “ 2.0 ,” and his creative team.

Most importantly, in “Jawan,” Khan looks more relaxed than in years past, toggling leisurely through his repertoire of tics and poses. He looks especially comfortable in undemanding musical numbers, and he still gives great Blue Steel looks every time he turns on a slow-mo heel to pout at viewers’ and/or co-stars. Shah Rukh Khan is still a star, baby, and “Jawan” uses him about as well as his fans might hope.

Khan even looks good delivering a corny but impassioned speech later in the movie. As Azad, Khan reminds us that he’s just like you and me, the apathetic public who, despite our best intentions, have not always exercised good judgment when voting for government officials. There’s a general election in India next year, and while the makers of “Jawan” could have otherwise taken bigger risks, their efforts are appreciated.

Jawan review: Shah Rukh Khan packs a punch in this massy, meaningful actioner

Jawan review: shah rukh khan is undeniably massy in this atlee directorial co-starring nayanthara..

A Shah Rukh Khan film releasing is nothing short of a festival, and I say this with utmost surety because it's not everyday that you see a theatre housefull for a 6am show. After starting the year with a bang with a blockbuster Pathaan, SRK's Jawan goes one level up - both on being overtly dramatic and loaded with high-octane action. Writer-director Atlee presents Khan in an all-new avatar - rough, tough, gritty yet not without his impeccable wit. (Also read: Jawan review and release live updates )

Jawan review: Shah Rukh Khan brings more drama and action with his new film.

Jawan is an SRK show from start to end, and it's double the treat watching him in a dual role. From his heroic entry scene to the fights to dance numbers, there's nothing that he can't do and makes you believe in it as well. At 57, turning 58 in November, SRK bowls you over with his action. Given the amount of action he has done in Jawan, it appears that Pathaan was a mere teaser. Atlee makes sure he doesn't disappoint audiences in his Hindi directorial debut, as he blends all the elements of commercial cinema to build a massy entertainer.

Jawan doesn't conform to any set templates or tropes and mixes everything that makes for an engaging and entertaining watch. Mention commercial, masala potboiler with action, drama, song and romance and Jawan has it all in abundance. I won't even say don't apply brains, please do because it highlights some important topics. The nearly 3-hour long film tells a compelling tale of prevalent corruption at various levels in the system that affects the common man in the most brutal ways. Thankfully, at no point it gets preachy, though it goes into a social commentary zone for a while, especially with a monologue from SRK towards the end.

Jawan's non-linear narrative starts in the present day and moves 30 years ahead and then uses flashback to explain the why and how. I won't share highlights of the plot for they may get spoilery. But, one can safely say that Jawan is not entirely a revenge drama but every sequence is a short story in itself with an elaborate flashback reasoning the current actions. Somehow, that also seems to be a problematic thing for I missed the consistency in storytelling. Jawan doesn't let you stay on one story for too long and hops on to the next too soon, thus breaking the flow.

What's consistent in Jawan is the top-notch and intricately choreographed action that offers an absolute cinematic experience. All the hype about Bollywood meets South makes sense when you see so much south ka tadka, especially in slo-mo shots, gravity-defying action with men flying and hero with his demigod status. A full-on actioner, it takes on the burning topic of farmer suicides over non repayment of smallest of bank loans. Given what the country went through in the past year witnessing mass farmer protests, the subject instantly strikes a chord, and makes you think hard. There this one moment showing a farmer hanging himself from a tree, and that spine-chilling scene leaves you heartbroken.

Another time, Jawan touches upon the corruption in healthcare system and the sad conditions of government hospitals. The film switches tone from being an actioner to a lighter tale in no time. There are two parallel stories running simultaneously. In one, Narmada (Nayanthara), head of Force Once is looking for Vikram Rathore (SRK) who put the lives of 376 passengers at risk while pulling off a perfect hijack. The second story shows Narmada and Azad Rathore (also SRK) falling for each other. Meanwhile, the baddie, Kalee (Vijay Sethupathi) an arms dealer, has a history with Vikram Rathore and Azad gradually becomes a part of their story.

SRK's army of girls is the backbone of Jawan and it's heartening to see that each of them get enough screen time to shine and form an integral part of the film's story and screenplay. Doctor Eram (Sanya Malhotra) was wrongly framed in the killing of 57 innocent kids and ends up in prison while Kalki (Lehar Khan) as a farmer's daughter wants to avenge her father's death. Helena (Sanjeeta Bhattacharya) the ethical hacker and Lakshmi (Priyamani) as the girl-next-door have interesting character arcs. Along with their chief, all these girls showcase determination, conviction and grit.

For each stunt he plans, SRK dons a new look and much to the delight of his fans, he aces them all. Especially that metro hijack sequence where Khan sported a bald look that created enough buzz after the teaser dropped, shows him like never before. As a young Azad, he wooed with his lover-boy image and as Vikram with grey hair and a cigarette in his mouth, he carries unmatched swag.

Matching SRK's stardom, Vijay Sethupathi brings his own charm and gravitas. His portions are powerful and menacing. In his young as well as aged avatar, Sethupathi doesn't let go of the fear he evokes with his presence. His confrontation scene with Vikram ahead of the climax is brilliantly written and shot with a tinge of humour. Nayanthara brings freshness and is greeted with a slo-mo shot each time she comes on screen. Sadly though, her chemistry with Khan fails to ignite any sparks and it's quite bland. Deepika Padukone, on the other hand, as Vikram Rathore's wife Aishwarya, in a special appearance, is a treat to watch. There's even a dance number featuring the two, giving full-on Chennai Express nostalgia. Sunil Grover as officer Irani is a revelation and you wish there was more of him on screen and more for him to do.

Jawan's screenplay by Atlee and S. Ramanagirivasan is engaging and gripping but Sumit Arora's dialogues are quite forgettable and average considering the scale the movie is mounted on. Other than the one line when SRK says, 'Bete ko haath lagane se pehle baap se baat kar' nothing really stays with you for long.

Nevertheless, Jawan is a wholesome watch that won't give you any dull moment. Keep your eyes and mind focused on screen for there's a lot to take in and you don't want to miss the action or know why it's happening in the first place. Watch out for a climax that's one paisa vasool moment.

Jawan Review: Strikingly Meta Vehicle Taps The Magnetism Of Shah Rukh Khan

Jawan review: in the final act, srk and vijay sethupathi (who is as brilliant as ever) square off in a scene that caps a magnificent crowd-pleaser that blends some sharp writing and a high level of technical finesse..

Jawan Review: Strikingly Meta Vehicle Taps The Magnetism Of Shah Rukh Khan

Jawan review: SRK in a still from the film.(courtesy: iamsrk )

A young South Indian director with a 100 per cent success rate - every one of his four previous films has been a humongous hit - and a Bollywood superstar with an enduring fan following like nobody else's combine to unleash a Hindi mass movie that is as good as any we have seen in recent times.

Jawan , which also has Tamil and Telugu versions released nationwide, brings together the best of two worlds in a manner that borders on the delightfully frenzied and consistently captivating. Shah Rukh Khan, coming off the box-office record-smashing Pathaan, makes the most of a screenplay that has things to say and the wherewithal to making its pertinent points without losing its focus on the primary purpose of providing unalloyed entertainment.

Packed with all the ingredients that you would expect in a high-octane action film, Jawan is a strikingly meta vehicle in which a star communicates directly with his fan base and holds forth on themes that are crying out to be addressed. To that extent, it is somewhat like the 2017 Vijay starrer, Mersal, Atlee's third directorial venture.

In his first Hindi film, Atlee, who has written Jawan with his Theri and Mersal collaborator S. Ramana Girivasan, taps the magnetism of Shahrukh Khan and the spirit of the hot-button themes of the times in a superbly crafted potboiler that mixes big explosive action sequences with intimate emotional scenes.

Jawan tells the affecting story of a soldier without resorting to jingoistic bluster. If anything, the film does the exact opposite. It speaks up on behalf of the masses and touches upon issues that matter to people at the mercy of the politically and economically powerful.

Without naming names or specifying real-life parallels, Jawan weighs in on crony capitalism, bad loans, farmer suicides, neglected government hospitals, malfunctioning military weapons, election fraud and the plight of a citizenry stripped of access to resources that are rightfully theirs.

Jawan turns the spotlight on apathetic ministers, falsehood-peddling politicians and incompetent and compromised bureaucrats, none of whom are willing to be held accountable for a rotting system. The film delivers its message with great flair but without succumbing to gratuitous grandstanding.

Who is better equipped to do all this than SRK, who, even when he plays a larger-than-life action hero on a mission to take down a powerful industrialist who has wronged him and his nation in more ways than one, can stay rooted in the real world and animate the canvas with humanity even as he projects an invincible, superhero-like persona?

Jawan , produced by Gauri Khan under the Red Chillies Entertainment banner, erases the line that separates the actor playing a fictional figure and the star engaged in a conversation with his audience. The latter is inevitably one-way but as one watches the film in a packed hall its resonance with significant swathes of the audience is palpable.

SRK carries off the onerous task with such phenomenal panache that one barely notices when one entity gives way to the other. The narrative is never in danger of losing its balance even as the performer and the character shorten the distance between them.

On one level, Jawan  is a fan service masala film. On another, it is a tale of revenge that is also a political statement, and a loud and clear one at that. Jawan ends with the hero looking straight into the camera - it is positioned in a way that represents the eye of the audience - and tangentially echoing what SRK's character had said more than once in the action-comedy from a decade ago, Chennai Express ("Don't underestimate the power of a common man").

Ask questions, seek answers and use the power of your vote wisely, he exhorts the audience with all the solemnity that he can muster following an act of daring that compels the head of state to accept his demand to intervene.

Jawan opens in a hilly village on India's border - the exact location isn't specified - where a badly wounded soldier is nursed back to physical health. A few months later, he springs to the defence of the hamlet when it is attacked by a band of murderous infiltrators. He repels the aggressors but the brave warrior does not remember who is. A little boy who he saves from certain death promises to find out when he is old enough.

The film cuts to three decades later. A Mumbai Metro train with more than 300 passengers is hijacked by a group of six women (played, among others by Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra and Sanjeeta Bhattacharya) and an ageing man (Shahrukh Khan) in the guise of an Army Captain. He demands that he will negotiate only with one particular police officer, Narmada Rai (Nayanthara, who hits all the right notes).

The parleys over the next few minutes brings an unlettered agriculture minister and a wealthy businessman, Kali Gaekwad (Vijay Sethupathi), into the picture. At one end of the spectrum, we hear the story of a farmer (Omkar Das Manikpuri) forced to kill himself because he has defaulted on a Rs 40,000 loan for a tractor. At the other end is the case of a bank waiving off an industrialist's Rs 40,000 crore loan.

The captain's first encounter with the law gives way to scenes in a woman's prison where he reappears as a jail warden, Azad, a man who has revolutionised life for the inmates with boldly progressive initiatives. The jailer, with the help of six women who have suffered at the hands of those who wield power, is determined to change how the prison - and the nation - functions.

The first half of the 170-minute film is fast-paced and replete with stylishly executed fight sequences and a track that witnesses Azad and Narmada, a single mother, entering into wedlock. Post-intermission, Jawan recounts the story of Azad's birth, the fate of his mother (Deepika Padukone in a memorable special appearance) and his relationship with the former women's prison jailer Kaveri (Riddhi Dogra).

The flashbacks out of the way, the film returns to the thick of the action around the villainous tycoon whose misdeeds extend to trying to influence the electoral process with money power. The hero and his supporters fan out to stop the baddie and his accomplices in their tracks.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

In the chase sequences in the run-up to a rousing climax, director Atlee and his team pull out the stops and come up eye-popping action passages. In the final act, SRK and Vijay Sethupathi (who is as brilliant as ever) square off in a scene that caps a magnificent crowd-pleaser that blends some sharp writing (the Hindi dialogues by Sumit Arora are almost always on the ball) and a high level of technical finesse.

Jawan hits the bull's eye both as a movie that is out to entertain and a vehicle that demonstrates the power of a superstar endowed with a voice that is anything but ordinary. It manifests itself as much on the screen as it does outside its fictive confines.

A mass movie is a vessel, but it’s an empty one without the liquid to hold. Masala is hot, but it’s only ground dust without the dish. The ‘hero-entry moment’ is a legacy, but it’s only a stranger striding in slow-mo if we don’t know who he is. Atlee’s Jawan – a film I’d have watched in back-to-back morning shows if I didn’t have to write this review – celebrates the identity of this stranger. He is an overflowing vessel, but he’s also the dish of the year. When he asks “Main kaun hu? (Who am I?),” it’s a question in the shape of a reminder. The reminder is not just trapped by the big screen. It’s everywhere – it’s in his name, his narrative, his fatherhood, the interviews he’s stopped doing, the loyalty of his fans, the cheekiness of ‘Ask SRK’ Twitter sessions, the venom of his trolls, the boycott hashtags, the stoic nationalism, and a decade-long comeback in the making. If Pathaan was the first line of that reminder, Jawan is the whole punchline. And what a punchline it is.

Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan

Jawan (“soldier”) is not just any social drama. It’s a drama based in a country so embattled that the only mantra left is: When in doubt, Shah Rukh Khan . The leaders have failed, the system is corrupt, and a superstar has decided to take matters into his own hands. This intervention is disguised as one of the most enjoyable, pulpy, ditzy and progressive entertainers in recent memory. It’s Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) with swag, Rang De Basanti (2006) with zero shame, and Ghayal (1990) on steroids. It’s anti-establishment rage with pro-people hope. It’s hard to write a single line of plot without spoiling the experience. So let’s just say that Khan in Jawan signifies the sort of happy-hour vigilantism that’s immensely satisfying to see. He’s a soldier and a jailer, a patriot and a saint. And he is fed up. Every time he appears, it’s a hero-entry moment – and there are at least ten of these. (I may or may not have hooted at the coolest pre-interval scene in ages; if you listen closely, you might almost hear Khan growl: Who’s your daddy now? ). Which is to say that things are so bleak today that Khan needs to be introduced – and remembered – multiple times. He needs to be there, even when he’s not. And he needs to keep arriving, by hook or by crook, as hero and antidote, as enforcer and protector.

Between Fact and Fiction

In other words, being fiction isn’t enough. In Jawan , the singularity of storytelling wears the plurality of life. For instance, the Robin Hood theme is timeless but also pointedly current. When a hijacking happens, the protagonist – who loves old Bollywood songs – pretends to be a baddie, and his first target is a burqa-clad passenger. Later, a woman is falsely charged and jailed for drug use; she takes the fall for government apathy. When a skirmish at the border goes wrong, soldiers become pawns in a political scam that leaves the army with faulty weapons. It’s all there: Farmer suicides, fumbling ministers, a shortage of oxygen cylinders, a billionaire who funds the government. It’s no surprise that electronic voting machines (EVMs) and an impending election play a key role in the premise, too. There’s a back-from-the-dead and memory-loss track, a nod to the fact that a (movie) soldier has had to rediscover his stature as a secular icon. There’s an all-female team of avengers – an ode to Khan’s unique image as both a feminist hero and beta-male lover – and an aspirational women’s prison that reframes the cage as a container of pent-up potential. All alleged flaws – a bandaged face, a bald head, middle age, pregnancy out of wedlock, macho cigar-smoking (which almost taunts the “cigarettes are injurious to health” disclaimer) – morph into superhero capes. When politicians are reduced to caricatures who transform at the drop of a hat, it’s not lazy writing. The rush suggests that the film perhaps has no time for figures who generally have no time for the people that vote them in.

Vijay Sethupathi in Jawan

I’m usually not a fan of film-makers being in awe of the stars they cast. But Atlee’s blinding reverence for Shah Rukh Khan and his Daddy era (as well as Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi ) works wonders for the film. The lovesick treatment (Level: Hrithik Roshan in War ) ensures that when the director fast-forwards through the romance, flashbacks, climax and reaction shots in a hurry, our excitement is rooted in the anticipation of the next punchy scene. And the next, and the next. It stops mattering that the connective tissue is a formality, or that tears are used as narrative shortcuts. Everything else is a footnote, a filler in service of bold messaging, at a time when even silence is viewed through the lens of dissent.

More is Better

The directness of this courage (especially a monologue towards the end) is moving, because it reveals the cards of a film that isn’t afraid to request its viewers to reflect rather than tell them to think. Its activism is almost chivalrous, despite the loud tone. It doesn’t hesitate to break the fourth wall and use its commercial packaging – replete with the contradictions of a weak soundtrack but a terrific score, wanton violence and pan-Indian emotions – to reason with the very concept of democracy. Add to this the colour – like a delightfully unhinged villain, a cheetah chilling at a high-scale meeting featuring a Bane-styled billionaire, a vertically challenged henchman pulling his gigantic colleague as they record a video – and Jawan becomes an irresistible cocktail of guts and mainstream glory.

Deepika Padukone in Jawan

Most of all, the subtext is there for everyone to savour. The thrill of watching a Shah Rukh Khan film has long been defined by his uncanny ability to make it about himself. Over the years, he’s renovated the idea of celebrity narcissism, turning it into meta-entertainment at the movies. Khan has often let his life – or at least popular perception of his life – inform the spirit of his roles. Our enjoyment is derived from the illusion that we’re watching him as much as the men he plays. Earlier, this auto-fiction was limited to excavations of his own superstar duality ( Duplicate, Om Shanti Om, Fan, Ra.One, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi ). But it’s only as an action hero that this self-reverence has gone from entertainment to art. The genre physicalises (and mythologises) Khan’s journey, pitting him against real-world demons instead of imaginary people. While it’s natural to wonder why he took so long to do all-out action cinema, the timing is perfect – his underdog swag can now afford to be personal and political at once. It can be aggressive and kind at once.

As a result, his heroes aren’t fighting against, they’re fighting for. The “bete ko haath lagane se pehle baap se baat kar (before threatening the son, deal with the father)” threat in Jawan brings the house down for a reason. The flashback of his character stars a child who resembles a young Aryan Khan in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), for a reason. A Lion King reference (Khan and his son voiced Mufasa and Simba in the Hindi version of the 2019 live-action remake) hits home, for a reason. None of it is grandstanding or self-homage anymore. Within the defiant parameters of action cinema, it acquires the grammar of self-expression. The fight is literal; the scale is fitting. It becomes more . And Jawan is that more. It understands that cinematic truth isn’t about logic but pop-cultural authenticity. It gets that mass is weightless without a sense of matter. And it proves that masala film-making isn’t about giving the audience what they want; it’s about asking them what they need.

‘Jawan’ review: A rousing guts-and-glycerine saga

In Jawan , sparks fly as a megawatt movie star meets a hugely confident director. Atlee’s guts-and-glycerine saga has big names from the Hindi and Tamil industries, a crowd-pleasing theme of vigilante justice, slickly filmed action set pieces, snarky humour and earnest social messaging topped by Shah Rukh Khan in peak charismatic mode.

Just to be amply sure, Atlee and co-writer S Ramanagirivasan throw in a couple of effective cameos, nods to Khan’s back catalogue and at least one fluffy dog. And did we mention the computer-generated cheetah?

The cheerfully nonsensical plot revolves around corruption in high places, orchestrated by a criminal mastermind who has a Marathi name, Kaali Gaekwad, but speaks Tamil-accented Hindi. Azad (Khan) and his posse of six women set out to thwart Kaali (Vijay Sethupathi), earning themselves the tag of public enemies and the attention of government officer Narmada (Nayanthara).

Narmada oozes purpose but cannot dodge the contrivances placed in her path by Jawan ’s makers. Like the heroine of the Khan starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi , Narmada tirelessly chases Azad but fails to recognise him when he is standing by her side. Those puppy-brown eyes? That distinctive schnozzle? Like Azad’s avenging angels, Narmada too turns out to be only the latest fan of the movie’s over-achieving superhero.

jawan movie review on imdb

Azad isn’t just an untiring messiah who speaks up for stricken farmers, victims of a crumbling health care system and disgruntled voters (at least one of his missions is subversive, given the current political climate). Azad is a feminist too, Jawan will have you know.

His biggest supporters are adoring women, played by actors including Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra and Sanjeeta Bhattacharya. There’s a neat circularity between this movie, Chak De India! , in which Khan played a coach who leads a women’s hockey team to unlikely victory, and Atlee’s Tamil-language Bigil , in which a coach leads a women’s football team to unlikely victory.

A movie with a male savior is often cringe-worthy. However, Khan’s screen image – expansive, suffused with love, heroic in an old-fashioned way without being aggressively macho, irreverent but also sincere – helps sell a conceit that might have crashed with any other actor.

Fleet despite its 169-minute runtime, with sequence after sequence designed to draw whistles as well as wring out tears, Jawan deftly leaps from one incredulous moment to the next. Atlee’s skill at demanding that we suspend disbelief in exchange for an all-round entertainer is most evident in his handling of his leading man. If the other cast members don’t stick, it isn’t for lack of trying.

Deepika Padukone has a superb cameo, with her character Aishwarya displaying more of a frisson with Khan than the neglected Narmada does. If Nayanthara is less than impressive in her Hindi language debut, it’s hardly her fault.

The brilliant Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi too makes for a feeble arch-villain. Kaali says a lot of mean things and acts on them too, but Sethupathi’s boredom is evident. It isn’t his show, after all.

Jawan review: Shah Rukh Khan is epic in this mass entertainer

Follow Us :

The idea of cinematic justice is common to films where the forces of evil are finally defeated by the hero and life returns to normal. There is another layer to this idea when real-life politics is part of the plot, and justice is established in places where there was none. Such films directly speak to the viewers and reflect a collective anger through one central figure who saves the day. In ' Jawan ', Shah Rukh Khan takes command as that central figure. He is responsible for making things right by first bringing the system to a standstill. Vikram Rathod (Shah Rukh Khan) is a vigilante who will not let corruption thrive. Screenwriters Atlee and S Ramanagirivasan take us into the template of ‘right vs wrong’ by creating an outlaw-protagonist fighting for the rights of the oppressed. There is little room for nuance when it comes to depicting the suffering, but that is never the focus. The strength of the film lies not in imparting finesse, but in invoking collective memory and making audiences angry enough to fight back against the system.

The film belongs completely to Shah Rukh Khan. Making a grand entry more than once, he mouths words that are more lethal than any gun. Director Atlee designs each scene carefully. It feels as if Shah Rukh is an extra layer in the screenplay; he adds twists and turns through his looks, and diverts the narrative his way with just a blink of his intense eyes. Along with the theatrics, there are resounding parallels to what is happening to him in real life, teased through the punchy dialogues. When he delivers a monologue urging citizens to become active in building the country, it feels as if he is speaking less as Vikram or Azad and more as Shah Rukh Khan, the man forced into silence by the current regime. With its simplicity, ' Jawan' works as a massy entertainer infused with a dose of idealism. Some scenes in the first half needed better handling and some sequences after the interval needed sharper editing. However, the film manages to enthral and pull at your heartstrings by investing all its energies in the hero. The theatres are ready to be filled with whistles and hoots all the way.

Jawan First Review

Jawan First Review: After taking the global box office by storm with Pathaan, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is all set to make his fans go crazy once again with his next movie, Jawan.

The action-packed thriller movie is directed by Tamil filmmaker Atlee and marks superstar Nayanthara's debut in the Hindi film industry. Soon after the trailer was released and showcased on Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the hype around the film has amped up.

As fans are already going nuts since its advance booking was opened on September 1, the first review of the action thriller is out, and it has only good things to say about it.

As the film's team is gearing up for Jawan's release, which is due in three days, Pakistani-origin Umair Sandhu, who calls himself a critic and a member of the Overseas Censor Board, shared his review of Jawan and stated that the actioner is loaded with manic energy and high spirit.

Jawan Advance Booking: SRK's Film Leaves Pathaan & Gadar 2 Behind; Sells Over 5 Lakh tickets For Day 1

Praising the movie, Umair gave Jawan 5 stars and wrote, "First Review #Jawan is a perfect vehicle that does justice to the talent of #ShahRukhKhan. He seems to have found a story & character that work in perfect sync and tandem with manic energy.#SRK steers this physically challenging lead role with high-spirited self-belief."

JAWAN ADVANCE BOOKING

Filmibeat cannot verify how he has managed to watch the film days ahead of its release or guarantee how authentic the review is. Meanwhile, there is no press being organised for Jawan and journalists and reviewers in India at present.

Jawan advance bookings are now in full swing and is said to beat Pathaan's all-time record for advance bookings. According to its first-day advance booking numbers by trade website Sacnilk.com, the actioner is expected to create new all-time records for Hindi movies and has sold over 7 tickets in India for its opening day alone.

Trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan took to X and gave the latest figure, saying, "BREAKING: Jawan Day 1 advance sales. SOLD 7 lakh tickets. CROSSES ₹20 crore gross mark across all theatres in India. National Multiplexes alone sells 3 lakh plus tickets for the opening day... 2 days to Jawan..."

WHAT KRK SAID ABOUT JAWAN?

KRK shared a post on social media, revealing that his Bollywood friend called Jawan a 'masterpiece'. He tweeted, "Just now, a Bollywood Wala friend called me who has watched film, and according to him #Jawan is a masterpiece. It's technically brilliant and full of entertainment. So now I am really confused because I'm not sure, whom I should believe. (sic)"

WHAT MUKESH CHHABRA SAID ABOUT JAWAN?

Jawan was an emotional roller coaster. Thank you for making me a part of this film @iamsrk and @Atlee_dir and @_GauravVerma. Even if I wasn't a part of this film, it moved me and gave me goosebumps. One of the best Bollywood and Pan india films I have seen. Massy with a message.

JAWAN TO SET BOX OFFICE RECORDS

Trade experts believe that the film will set the box office on fire and create new records. Amid competition from Sunny Deol starrer Gadar 2, the movie is expected to start on a solid note, garnering over Rs 50 crore in India.

Let us tell you that Jawan has been given a U/A by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with seven cuts. The actioner has been approved for a run time of 169 minutes (2 hours, 49 minutes). On the other hand, it will be released in over 5,000 screens, which is massive.

Shah Rukh Khan and his Jawan team are making sure to promote the film in the right way. Days after seeking blessings at Viashno Devi Shrine, he, along with his daughter Suhana, co-star Nayanthara, and her filmmaker husband Vignesh Shivan, visited the famous Tirupati temple to offer prayers. Several viral videos show SRK wearing a white kurta pyjama with a traditional white and golden cloth around her shoulder, while Suhana and Nayanthara are seen in white salwar suits.

Meanwhile, it is facing backlash in neighbouring nation Bangladesh. The country's government has reached a compromise and allowed a cap of 10 Hindi movies to be released in the country, and Jawan is the third film to be released after Pathaan and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. Local artists are concerned about the impact of foreign films on the local film business.

Jawan has sold 11 lakh tickets in all languages for day 1, surpassing advance bookings of Pathaan and Adipurush, which were 10 lakh. Jawan's advance booking collection has grossed 30 crore for opening day.

The executive director of Gaiety, Galaxy and Maratha Mandir Cinema, Manoj Desai told told PTI: "By Thursday, it will be houseful. We are happy with the golden run of movies in theatres, especially in single-screen theatres. I think because of Pathaan and Gadar 2, the business in single screen has revived. The industry has bounced back in a big way. With 'Jawan things are looking positive.'

Fans celebrate Jawan's relase

Fans have flocked cinema halls for the early screenings, and videos from the theatres say that Jawan has all the elements of a mind-blowing massy film. Shah Rukh Kahn fans can be seen dancing and hooting to the song Zinda Banda.

SRK fans also celebrated 'Jawan' release by cutting a cake outside the star's house, Mannat. The cake had 'Jawan FDFS' written on it.

Helmed by Atlee, the movie also stars Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Yogi Babu, Sunil Grover, and others.

It is set to release in theatres on September 7.

Jawan movie review: Shah Rukh Khan is the hero of Bharat that is India in this pop-masala banger

Jawan movie review: after a kinetic and zingy first hour, shah rukh khan's film slumps in bits, but as a whole, the movie is an unabashed massy entertainer with strong political messaging, making it a film which is very much of the moment..

jawan movie review on imdb

Combining the in-your-face maximalism of director Atlee, and the come-get-me grizzled slit-eyed sexiness of star Shah Rukh Khan, Jawan is a pop-masala banger: iss kahani mein action hai, emotion hai, hero hai, villain hai, aur naach-gaana hai, aur kya chahiye? Actually, there is more: fashioned as an unabashed massy entertainer, Jawan slips in strong political messaging at every opportunity, making it a film which is very much of the moment.

Anyone familiar with the previous smash-hits of Atlee, who understudied with Shankar, will know how much he loves going big, and giving us family dramas doused in sentiment. ‘Jawan’ has two SRKs for the price of one, separated by thirty years in time, but united in single-minded Mera-Bharat-Mahaan patriotism: the older one is an army man called Vikram Rathore who, after displaying exemplary valour in the face of certain death, bides his time in the shadows; the younger, who goes by the name of Azad, is a Robin Hood type with a thing for disguise, whose main job is to rob the rich to help the poor.

jawan movie review on imdb

To this end, ‘Jawan’ has a veritable list of those hapless Indians that the ‘system’ has trampled upon: poverty-stricken farmers who commit suicide, the sick who die in badly-run government hospitals, the soldiers who lose their lives because of faulty guns — the citizens who are powerless and helpless because those in power are corrupt and venal. There’s nothing new in the conflict that the story sets up; we’ve seen variations of it, and the vigilante-forced-into-taking-on-the-bad-guys in scores of movies. What lifts ‘Jawan’s pushback against the ‘system’ is the cockiness, and knowingness with which it goes about the whole: Azad’s collaborators are a bunch of young women (Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, among others) who help him pull off a series of wholly-improbable-but-enjoyable heists. Their presence gives the plot an excuse to turn the screen over to girl-power, and for SRK to drawl (reminding you a bit of Vijay in Atlee’s previous ‘Bigil’, in which he plays coach to an all-girl football team): are you ready, girls? It’s also a fun throwback to one of SRK’s most beloved films, ‘Chak De, India’. My first-day-first-day show erupted in hoots and cheers.

Both Nayanthara playing Azad’s love interest, and Deepika Padukone , paired opposite SRK Sr, hold the eye when they are around, the latter leaving more impact than the former. There’s also a little girl, cutesy but sweet, to aim at our heart-strings. You can see how much fun the writers have had to bring back certain names in other classic SRK films (Kaveri Amma from ‘Swades’), as well as actors who spark well with him (both Priyamani and Deepika were his able companions in his previous Southern sojourn in Rohit Shetty’s ‘Chennai Express’).

Vijay Sethupathi is the big bad wolf here, as a crooked arms dealer-cum-businessman, the kind of guy whose ill-gotten gains powers governments (ooh, now who is this character based on?). He’s always dressed in black, scowling and growling and being menacing, and in a couple of places, does manage to leave a mark. But even Sethupathi knows that this film is all about SRK, so in the rest of it he looks as if he is just going through the paces.

Festive offer

After a kinetic, zingy first hour, the film slumps in bits, especially when it dives into the part housed in a women’s prison, where all inmates are very stylishly dressed in pale green uniforms with nary a filthy corner to be seen, and the nobility starts becoming too much handle. A very young woman ( Dogra) is made to look middle-aged. My eyes started glazing over at the colourless songs-and-dances: not one stays with you when you leave the theatre.

But then comes the last act, in which both SRK’s get together, and along with a big Bollywood star in a walk-on part playing an ‘I love Onam’ officer-with-a-Malayali-wife, bring the whole thing to a boil. It involves, gulp, truckloads of stolen EVM machines, and a sequence which is jaw-dropping in its audacity, given our polarised times, in which a superstar, so reviled in the last few years, buoyed only by the massive success of him appearing In and As ‘Pathaan’ , in which he reclaims his identity loud and proud, exhorts us to use that finger for voting in the right person, ignoring jaat-paat-and-dharm. And that one also got the audience clapping.

Yes, as expected, the very meta ‘baap-beta’ line brought the house down. But Shah Rukh Khan extends that message, from his family to his watan, turning into the jawan-hero of India that is Bharat, and Bharat that is India.

Jawan movie director – Atlee Jawan movie cast – Shah Rukh Khan, Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara , Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Deepika Padukone, Sunil Grover, Riddhi Dogra Jawan movie rating – 3.5 stars

T20 World Cup 2024: India beat Australia in Super-8

India's Jasprit Bumrah shined as he helped his team secure a 24-run win over Australia, pushing them to the brink of elimination. Rohit Sharma's incredible 92 off 41 balls set up a target of 206, but it was Bumrah's dismissal of Travis Head that sealed the deal. Despite Head's impressive performance, India's bowlers, including Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, were able to keep Australia at bay.

Published: Fri 8 Sep 2023, 8:00 AM

Directed by : Atlee

Starring : Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi

Rating : 3/5 stars

In 2007, Shah Rukh Khan led 16 young girls to cinematic hockey glory, empowering them and in the process, clearing his own name that had been besmirched with the tag of ‘traitor’. Chak De! India is a cult classic that is often counted among Shah Rukh’s best films.

Sixteen years later, in 2023, Shah Rukh becomes the leader of an all-girls team (only six as opposed to 16), empowering them and in the process, clearing his father’s name that had been besmirched with the tag of ‘traitor’. Jawan , his latest release, is all set to become a mega blockbuster, certain to be counted among the Bollywood superstar’s most significant movies.

Of course, the parallels between Chak De ! India and Jawan end right there. In terms of treatment and scale, they are poles apart. Jawan sees SRK in action mode, almost as if his earlier film Pathaan consumed a year’s supply of steroids. It’s a superstar vehicle that celebrates the charm and enduring appeal of Khan and on that metric, it succeeds wildly. He is a joy to watch.

Add to that, a load of meta references to past movies and real-life controversies, a strong message, popular South Indian stars, a powerful sprinkling of politics, some surprise cameos, and you have the recipe for the perfect masala Bollywood film, a genre that the actor seems to be hell-bent on reviving.

After a spectacular opening scene set somewhere on the border area, where an old amnesiac Shah Rukh rescues a group of villagers from villains and asks, "Who am I?", only to be greeted with his full name on screen followed by the credits, the action shifts to the hijacking of a local train in Mumbai. SRK once again appears, this time with six female badass aides and starts blackmailing the government. Unlike other hijackers, his demands are not personal, they are all meant for the greater common good. Turns out he is a modern-day Robinhood named Azad, in charge of a weird women’s prison with high-tech machinery that looks like Professor’s set in Money Heist .

This premise is all that you need to know about the plot of the film. From here on, it’s a ride that sees too many elements stuffed in too small a box --- a hectic, inexplicable romance between Shah Rukh and Nayanthara (playing a glamorous cop), a precocious child, father and son moments, a long flashback and a mean villain who is the epitome of all evil.

Do they all work? Individually, not by a mile. The SRK-Nayanthara love story has no chemistry while emotional and romantic scenes appear more like breaks between the next action set piece. The back stories --- of Khan’s team members as well as his own --- lack punch or emotion. But overall, the package compels you to accept the film's undeniable entertainment appeal.

Jawan is the sort of film where everyone walks in slo-mo to Anirudh Ravichander’s thunderous music. It’s also the film where your disbelief should not just be suspended but completely banished. Do not ask questions or even wonder ‘how do these things happen?’ You need to just surrender as one unbelievable sequence after another unfolds, often without a shred of logic (sample this: a doctor checks the pulse of a character and announces she’s pregnant).

What makes it a cut above the rest is the politics. A number of issues take centrestage --- farmer’s suicides, environmental degradation, crumbling healthcare, businessmen influencing elections and faulty governance. And then there is the monologue to watch out for --- it’s not Azad but Shah Rukh Khan making a fervent appeal to ask the right questions to your leaders.

Wish the same attention had been given to character arcs as well. Nayanthara is a force to reckon with in Tollywood but here, her emoting skills leave a lot to be desired. The supporting actors, from Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Riddhi Dogra to even Sunil Grover simply fill in the blanks, none of them making an impact. Vijay Sethupathi, the powerhouse actor, is actually disappointing as the antagonist, not oozing the menace expected to match Shah Rukh’s 360-degree cool quotient.

Revenge --- personal and social --- is the central theme in Jawan and while that is a tried-and-tested trope, director Atlee gives it the ultra-stylised Tollywood-meets-Bollywood treatment. It may have crater-sized holes as far as logic is concerned but what it has in oodles is Shah Rukh Khan. And that’s not bad news at all. Also, there are two fabulous cameos featuring A-listers, and a juicy possibility mentioned in the end credits. If you have the patience, wait for it.

Jawan

Shah Rukh Khan blockbuster “ Jawan ” has crossed the $100 million box office milestone.

The film has now grossed $103 million worldwide, according to numbers released by producers Red Chillies Entertainment. In India, the film has grossed $68.5 million.

“Jawan” is now the second highest Indian grosser of the year after “Pathaan,” also starring Khan, which released in January and concluded its run with $130 million. Sunny Deol’s “Gadar 2” now occupies the third spot with $82 million, while Rajinikanth’s “Jailer” is fourth with $76.6 million.

It has been quite the 2023 for Khan for whom “Pathaan” was a comeback after 2018’s “Zero,” which underperformed at the box office, with just cameos thereafter in “Laal Singh Chaddha” and “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva” (both released in 2022).

Incredibly, the star is not done with the year. He has “Dunki,” from director Rajkumar Hirani, which is due a Christmas release. Hirani has been a consistent hitmaker with his blockbuster films that include the “Munna Bhai” franchise with Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi, “Sanju” with Ranbir Kapoor, and “PK” and “3 Idiots” both starring Aamir Khan.

Sha h Rukh Khan is known as one of the great romantic stars of Bollywood. However, both “Pathaan” and “Jawan” fall squarely in the action space, with “Dunki” expected to be in the comedy-drama genre. Khan was one of the actors in discussions for Hirani’s breakout hit “Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.” in 2003, before the role eventually went to Dutt.

'Kalki 2898 AD' to beat 'Salaar' at worldwide box office

  • It's going to be Prabhas vs Prabhas at the worldwide box office
  • 'Kalki 2898 AD' is expected to gross Rs 200 crore on opening day
  • Will 'Kalki 2898 AD' become the 3rd biggest Indian opener worldwide?

'Kalki 2898 AD' is expected to do the unthinkable at the box office. The Prabhas-starrer is set for a huge opening day worldwide, and is likely to become the third-biggest Indian opener globally once it is released on Thursday, June 27. As per the initial trade reports, it is expected to go past the benchmark of Rs 200 crore gross globally. Directed by Nag Ashwin, it's being considered a genre-defining cinema combining science-fiction and Indian mythology.

Check the top 10 Indian movies with biggest opening day numbers at the worldwide box office (source: IMdB)

  • Baahubali 2: Rs 214.5 crore
  • RRR: Rs 223 crore
  • Salaar: Rs 165.3 crore
  • KGF 2: Rs 162.9 crore
  • Leo: Rs 142.8 crore
  • Adipurush: Rs 136.8 crore
  • Jawan: Rs 129.6 crore
  • Saaho: Rs 125.6 crore
  • Animal: Rs 115.9 crore
  • 2.0: Rs 105.6 crore

Interestingly, Prabhas is the only Indian actor with four Rs 100 crore openers at the worldwide box office. His previous films - 'Baahubali 2', 'Salaar', 'Adipurush' and 'Saaho' - all earned over Rs 100 crore on their 1st day worldwide.

Considering the strong buzz that 'Kalki 2898 AD' is enjoying, it is likely to wrap its first day business in the range of Rs 120-140 crore gross in India with around Rs 90-100 crore gross from the Telugu market alone. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are likely to add another Rs 15+ crore gross to the opening day total with the Hindi market bringing in around Rs 20 crore gross collection.
