Traditional Family Homes of North India; The Joy of Living Together

  • Architecture
  • Indian Culture
  • Indian Heritage
  • Traditional Houses of India

Table of contents

Traditional homes of punjab –, traditional homes of gujarat –, traditional homes of west bengal –, traditional homes of ladakh –.

Joint families have been an integral part of the Indian culture . Though today we find fewer families that manage to live all together under one roof, this was pretty much an understood way of life some five decades or more ago. Joint families have many cultural, social and traditional nuances that can be explored in detail some other time, however, what we would like to highlight in this series is the importance of the large family homes or traditional Indian houses.

For a number of urban, economic and social reasons, the joint families have broken up in our modern times, yet it is quite common for the entire clan to meet up for a vacation in an ancestral home. Ancestral or traditional homes are hence still seen, preserved and used in many parts of the country, bearing witness and standing as testimony to the culture of living and staying together.

Roughly dividing our discourse into two parts, let us forge ahead in this series to look at some of the traditional old homes of Northern India.

To be honest, northern India itself is a vast area especially considering it encompasses the architecturally rich states of Rajasthan , Gujarat, Punjab, West Bengal, Assam and the north eastern states.

However, there are some traits of old homes that are more or less same across different regions. Large double or more storied mansions, pillars, columns and wooden cravings, a central courtyard, a large open terrace and arched doorways are some basic outlines of how an old traditional home looks. However, it is the intricate finer local differences and designs that give each village, town or city its distinct own style. Interestingly, the cement, stone and brick made homes are but just the exact medium to facilitate a larger cultural and social milieu, called family.

Homes-of-North-India-Punjabi-Homes

The new generation needs no introduction to Punjabi traditional homes, thanks to the countless Bollywood movies that have centered on the yellow poppy fields, tractors and a rustic yet vibrant manor. Made from mostly baked bricks and wooden timber for doors there is a cattle shed usually found in the main courtyard. The courtyard is marked with a centrally placed floral arrangement where all ceremonies and rituals are carried out.

The living room is characterized by the ‘charpais’ that are comfortably spread out, whereas the adjoining rooms are laterally placed to the main hall. The verandah runs all along the house, which is often the place for the women of the house to bond and work together. This entire complex lies within a baked boundary that leads to the main road or the house next door.

Homes-of-North-India-Gujarati-Homes

The traditional homes of Gujarat have a lot of variety. The pols of Ahmedabad, the Bohri homes of Sidhpur, the bhungas of Kutch or the havelis of Ahmedabad , traditional homes of Gujarat are hard to stereotype into a single mold. The most iconic of these are the Bhungas of Kutch, found in the rural areas, typically identified by the conical thatched roof and circular walls. Built from locally available soil, bamboo and straw, the architecture and design is perfect to withstand the harsh climate as well as any tectonic or earthquake activity. The interiors are decorated with paintings and mirror works.

The pols of Ahmedabad, characterized by the narrow alleyways are a group of homes that belong to the same caste, religion or group of traders. Found mostly in Old Ahmedabad, the pols were gated communities where each family had its privacy but was yet a part of a larger cluster of the same kind.

Homes-of-North-India-Bohri-homes-of-Sidhpur

The Bohra community of Gujarat has a special place in the architectural annals, and their influence is seen mostly in the regions of Kapadvanj and the town of Sidhpur. The three to four storied homes have an internal courtyard in the center of the home with rooms and floors radiating on all sides. The tall windows, usually a few street facing as well as the ‘otla’ a pedestal of sorts outside the entrance for evening chit chats is an important social ingredient added into the otherwise personal properties. However, the common trait that binds most of the traditional Gujarat homes is their colorfully coordinated interiors and their love for intricate carvings and paintings.

Homes-of-North-India-Kolkata-Homes

Not many know this, but the bungalow originated from ‘Bengali’ and its architecture finds its roots in Bengal. Bungalows characterized by wide verandahs and one or two storeys have been adapted by the British for their summer retreats and many old Bengali homes are built on this style of architecture. Some features that are hard to miss in traditional Bengal homes are the hanging balcony, columns running along the balconies, a large central courtyard with the tulsi plant placed in its center and a special puja mandap with apses behind arches where the idols are kept. The various floors and rooms are well connected with stairways and winding corridors. The interiors include the four poster beds with curtain draping and sandalwood carved furniture. Gardens are usually large and well maintained.

Homes-of-North-India-Ladakh--Homes

Traditional houses in Leh are built using stones, timber, mud and mud bricks, and the housing layout reflects their different needs. The cow pens are usually at the bottom and the Buddhist altar at the top of the house. The most used and important room, including the kitchen faces the sun and the houses look impressive with a proper roof parapet as well as the windows and doors have detail carvings. The roofs of the homes are flat, and there is usually a basement to store the food during winter months. Large spacious rooms more so on the second floor are other typical characteristics of an Old Leh home.

Every region has its own unique style of architecture and most of it is visible in the rural areas. The stilt bamboo homes of Assam characterized by the ikra reeds, the double pitched roof style of Nagalad, the Kathkuni architectural style of Himachal Pradesh or the jharokas, jaalis and stepwells of Rajasthan are just a few examples.

However, where ethnic homes integrate the physical landscape along with the cultural and social variations of each region, old traditional homes are seen in larger towns and cities as well. Traditional homes hence bring together the architectural relevance of the region at the same time showcase the important family traditions, which may be missing from individual traditional homes.

Hence, a layout of a traditional family home though incorporates and follows the general pattern and details of the architectural style of the region it also brings to it a sense of togetherness and living it large.

Essay on Mera Punjab in Punjabi

Roka and Thaka – When all aspect of the marriage looks satisfactory the bride’s family visits the groom’s place to offer the groom their blessing along with various gifts for the family like fruits, sweets, clothes, money also known as shagun etc. This custom is known as the Roka. The bride is generally not present at the Roka. The groom’s family reciprocates the gesture by visiting the bride’s family on a separate day carrying gifts. The return ceremony is known as Thaka. These two are generally low key affairs with only the close family attending it. The Roka ceremony marks the beginning of relationship between the two families and usually begins with a small puja called Ardaas.

Mangni/Sagai – This ceremony marks the official engagement between the couple. This is often a grand ceremony and precedes the wedding by some months at least. The sagai ceremony makes the match an official one.

Shagun and Chunni Chadai – To mark the acceptance of the bride into the groom’s family, the Chunni Ceremony is observed. A group of ladies arrive at the bride’s house on the morning of the Sagai or a day before. They bring with them the outfit that the bride is to wear for the Sagai along with jewelry, sweets, fruit, mawa etc. Special part of the gift is an intricately embellished head scarf or Chunni. The Chunni is placed on the bride’s head and her face is covered with it like a veil. This ceremony is known as Chunni Chadana. She is then gifted jewelry like bangles or necklaces that are family heirlooms by her mother-in-law who helps her put them on. A tiny dot of henna is applied on her palm to mark the ceremony auspicious. These gifts to the bride are known as Shagun.

Sangeet – The Sangeet is a musical party generally arranged by the bride’s family. Traditionally, the ladies of the family got together and sat surrounding the bride. Together they made merry by singing folk wedding songs, teasing the bride, and dancing. The groom and a few of his family members were also invited to participate. Nowadays, the sangeet is a gala event when both the families get together to enjoy a fun-filled musical evening. Groups from both sides present dance performances that are often choreographed by experts. It’s basically a great opportunity for the families to get acquainted with each other.

Mehendi – Mehendi is an indispensible part of Punjabi wedding ceremony. The bride sits down on a special stool and henna paste is applied to her hands and feet. The henna designs are intricate and elaborate, and the groom’s initials are hidden amidst the various patterns. Upon drying gives a dark red color. It is believed the darker the color of the mehendi is, the more love the bride will receive at her in-laws. Previously, family members used to apply the henna paste but nowadays professional mehendi artists are hired. Other female members of the family also get henna applied to their hands. At the groom’s place the same mehendi ceremony is observed but at a smaller scale. Generally, a very simple henna design is applied to the groom’s palms. Traditional wedding songs are sung during the whole ceremony.

Wedding Attires

The Punjabi groom traditionally wears a set of Kurta Pajama to the wedding. The Kurtas may also be paired with churidar trousers. The designs on these Kurtas are generally lavish and elaborate. Nowadays, as a standard the Punjabi groom wears Sherwani. Cream or off-white is the preferred colors with lots of embellishments with zari threadwork, beadwork and stone decoration. He pairs the sherwani with a pajama or churidar in a complementary color like blue or maroon. He also wears a dupatta around his neck. He wears a traditional jooti or more modern loafers with the whole outfit. He wears a headdress with dangling strands of either flowers or decorative ribbons and even strings of pearls that cover his face. This special headdress is known as Sehra. The top part of the sehra is attached around the groom’s forehead and tied behind his head.

The Punjabi bride is a sight to behold. Resplendent in a gorgeous lehenga and lots of fashionable jewelry, she walks in beauty. Punjabi brides are very picky when it comes to their wedding lehenga and love to go all the way for the perfect one. Although Red is the traditional wedding color for all Indian brides, Punjabi brides are known to go for other colors like green, gold, fuchsia and orange. She pairs the lehenga with a matching dupatta with which she covers her head. She wears a lot of jewelry, some of it made of gold while some of it may be modern costume jewelry. Some compulsory components are maangtika, bangles, Nath, Chooda (a traditional red and ivory colored bangle set in multiples of four), kamarbandh and Paijaniya. The sister-in-law of the bride ties a set of Kalire to her wrists. These are gold or silver ornaments that are dome shaped with multiple danglers attached to them.

Wedding Day Rituals

Jago – The night before the wedding, the family stays up till late at night and Jago is celebrated at wee hours of the morning. A brass or copper Khada is decorated with clay lamps. The maternal aunt or mami of the bride/groom carries the vessel on her head while another lady will try and shake it with a long stick having bells attached. The ladies sing Punjabi wedding songs and will visit houses of friends and relatives who feed them sweets. They then dance together before moving on to the next house.

Gana Bandhna – On the morning of the wedding day, at their respective houses, the bride and the groom attend a puja. After completion of the puja the priest ties a sacred thread or mouli to their right wrists. The mouli is tied around a betel nut and a shell known as Kaudi. It is knotted multiple times around the wrists to make it difficult to untie later.

The head and face of the bride is covered during the ceremony as she is not supposed to see the chooda until the moment of her wedding. The maternal uncle and his wife then slip the Chooda into the bride’s hands. Other elderly members touch the chooda and give their blessings. Flower petals are showered on the bride. She is also gifted her wedding Lehenga by her maternal uncle at this time. The sister-in-law, friends and sisters of the bride then ties in the Kalire around her wrist or to one of her bangles which are umbrella-shaped ornaments that are often encrusted with coconut, dry fruits or dried betel nuts.

Haldi – Four lamps or diyas are lit and the bride sits on a low wooden stool facing them. A paste made up of sandalwood, turmeric, rosewater and mustard oil is prepared. This paste is applied all over the bride’s body especially face, hands and feet by the married ladies of the family. It is believed that the radiance from the diyas will impart an everlasting glow on the bride’s face. A similar ceremony is also observed at the groom’s house. The family members anoint each other with the same paste and there prevails an atmosphere of happiness and gaiety.

Ghara Gharoli – After completion of the Haldi ceremony, the dried haldi paste is scrubbed off from the bride’s face and body. She is then taken to a nearby temple where she is bather with pitchers full of holy water. This ritual is known as Ghara Gharoli. She then performs a prayer to the deity of the temple asking for blessings. She returns to her home and takes a proper shower and starts getting ready in her wedding finery. The same ritual is also observed by the groom’s side.

Sarbala – Sarbala refers to the caretaker of the groom. Generally a kid member of the family is chosen for this part and dons clothes similar to the groom. He then accompanies the groom to the wedding.

Ghodi Charna  – Traditionally, the Punjabi groom sets off for the wedding venue by riding a mare. The mare is decked up in gaudy decorations and tika is applied on its head. The mare is also fed chana dal (lentil) and water by the female relatives of the groom. The groom’s sister-in-law then applies surma to the groom’s eyes to ward off evil vibes. The groom them mounts the mare in a ceremonial manner. He is then accompanied by members of his family who sets off for the wedding venue along with him. The wedding procession is accompanied by a band that plays peppy musing and the members of the wedding procession dance to it.

Agwaani and Milni – The groom along with the wedding procession arrives at the wedding venue. They are met at the entrance by the bridal party. The love and warmth that Punjabis are well-known for is very apparent during this moment where the two families smile and embrace each other. This ritual when the groom and his family arrive at the wedding venue is known as Agwaani. The groom is then welcomed by the mother of the bride with a traditional arti and tika on the forehead.

The relatives of the groom then are sought out by the corresponding relative from the bride’s side, eg. Maternal uncles of the groom are sought out by maternal uncles of the bride. They greet each other and are welcomed inside the venue. This ritual is known as Milni.

Varmala – On entering the wedding hall, the groom is led towards the stage and he is made to stand upon a small pedestal. At the designated muhurat the bride arrives at the stage and the couple exchange garlands. This is a fun-filled ceremony where there is competition among the two sides to lift either the bride or the groom higher so that the other cannot put the garland over his or her head.

Varmala

Madhuperk – The bride and groom then proceed to the wedding mandap and the groom is offered a small bowl of water that he has to drink. He sprinkles some on his feet and drinks the rest. He is then offered a special concoction made with curd, honey, milk, ghee and other sacred essences. This is known as the Madhuperk. The groom is to take a sip off this drink before the wedding rituals commence.

Kanyadaan – During this age old Vedic ritual, the bride is given away by his parents to the groom. He requests the groom through Vedic mantras to take good care of his daughter and the groom accepts the bride’s hand and promises her father that he will treat her with utmost love and respect throughout his life.

The wedding havan is lit which is the sacred fire. In Hindu custom, the fire deity is the foremost witness of a wedding. The groom is handed over a plate which has fourteen parallel lines drawn on a bed of flour with a flower. The lines symbolize fourteen vows of a marriage. The priest outlines these vows one by one through Vedic mantras; the groom repeats after him and erases one line with a flower bud.

Phere – Next, the couple gets up. Then ends of their dupattas are tied in a knot and they encircle the sacred fire four times. For the first three times, the bride precedes the groom and for the final phera she has to follow the groom.

Lajahom – For this ritual, the bride’s brother pours puffed rice into her cupped hands. The bride and the groom then offer this to the fire together and seek the Fire God’s blessings. This ritual is repeated thrice.

Sindoor Daan – After completion of the Lajahom, the groom applies sindoor to the bride’s hair parting and ties the Mangalsutra around her neck. This completes the wedding rituals.

Joota Chhupai – While the groom is busy in the wedding, the bride’s sisters take hold of his shoes and hide them. When the wedding is complete and the groom steps out of the wedding mandap, they demand a ransom for returning the shoes. There is a lot of bargaining involved between the two parties and they come to an agreement. The groom has to pay the agreed upon amount in order to get back his shoes and move from the mandap.

Post-wedding Rituals

Vidaai/Doli – The bride bids a tearful goodbye to her family and throws handful of rice over her shoulder’s in her family’s direction. This way she expresses her gratitude towards them for taking care of her for so long. She is then sent off in a decorated car to her husband’s home. This return bridal procession is known as Doli.

Paani Bharna – On arrival of the Doli, the mother of the groom does an arti of the bride with a pitcher of water. After each circle, the mother-in-law attempts to take a sip of water, but the bride prevent her from drinking. She finally relents after the seventh circle. She then crosses the threshold after overturning a pot of rice with her right feet.

Mooh Dikhai – The couple is then taken to seek the blessings of the family deity. Next, the bride is seated and her veil is lifted for all of family and friends to see. The elders of the family then shower their blessings on the bride and give her gifts of cash and jewelry.

Reception – A lavish reception party is thrown by the groom’s family in honor of the newlyweds. A Punjabi reception is an occasion of immense joy with scrumptious meals and high-spirited music.

Pag Phera – The bride returns to her parent’s home with her husband. The parents welcome their daughter and son-in-law with a grand lunch. The couple has to spend the night at her parent’s place. The next day she returns to her husband’s home with a lot of gifts for her in-laws. This marks the end of the wedding celebrations.

My career will endure as long as 'Punjabi House' is remembered: Harisree Ashokan

 alt=

The character Ramanan played brilliantly by Harisree Asokan in the super hit movie Punjabi House has definitely gained an iconic status. Even today the character remains a super star in the world of trolls and memes. Not just Ramanan, the Malayali audience won’t easily forget many other superb characters, effortlessly essayed by Harisree Asokan, which made them laugh out loud. The veteran actor, who dons the director’s hat for the first time, is clearly thrilled as his debut venture ‘An International Local Story’ is all set to hit the screens.

What made you take so long to turn to direction?

There is no particular time for someone to direct a movie, pen a script or even become an actor. I believe we should do whatever we want when we feel we are capable or ready to do that. It should be so even if you are going to construct a house. You should have money and a good plan among others that need to fall in place. I acted in movies and wished to direct a film about eight or nine years ago. However, I didn’t have the courage to do that then. I was learning about cinema even while I was acting. I began noticing many factors like the editing, dubbing and screenplay. My entry as a director took so long as I was a bit scared about it. I finally decided to turn a director when everything fell into place and also when I felt the courage to do that.

How 'New Delhi' re-scripted Mammootty's career

How 'New Delhi' re-scripted Mammootty's career

Why didn’t you rope in big stars for your first movie?

The idea of a hero is subjective. I have a capacity of my own. I do not possess the physical capacity to handle a subject which is usually dealt by Shaji Kailas or Joshiy sir. It requires great talent. Above all you should have great knowledge about it. I did this movie when I found a subject which suited me. This is not a movie which was made for a ‘hero’. Even 9 years ago, I had wished to do a film like this. My approach was to make the shoes first and then find a foot that fits in. I really liked the subject and I roped in actors who perfectly suited the parts.

What did your friends say when you decided to direct a movie?

essay on house in punjabi

They are all really excited. They used to ask me why I wasn’t directing a movie. It took this long as I didn’t find a good subject and also because I was scared. Even now I am scared. Lots of people supported me. Sidhique Lal, Priyadarshan, Ranjith and Johny Antony have guided me while making this movie.

Though the story and screenplay are by others, I too have worked hard along with them. My friends were with me, supporting and helping me, while developing the script. This film doesn’t belong to just me but to an amazing team. I don’t intend to direct back to back movies. I want to act in more films. I will definitely do another movie even if this one is a success or not. I hope that the movie will succeed. Let the audience decide the rest.

Why aren’t you very active as an actor?

essay on house in punjabi

I spent around one and a half years for this movie alone. I rejected lots of movies that came my way during that time. It was not my intention to refrain from acting; neither was it for the sake of this movie. The offers weren’t impressive enough. I could have easily done that for money. I wasn’t as selective in the initial days. I did all the roles that were offered to me because I wished to act. Besides, as a newcomer you always try to do more films, be busy and find a place in the audiences’ hearts. Later you would prefer doing good roles. But then the number of movies that are offered to you would go down as new people come in.

One cannot be ousted by someone else; be that it in the films or in life. Now I choose movies that I think are good. There are many movies which didn’t do well at the box office despite having good roles in it. I did a few character roles and wish to do more such roles. My role in Baavuttiyude Naamathil directed by Ranjith was like that.

I learned more about the character only when I reached the location. I was stunned and asked Ranjiyettan whether I would be able to pull it off. He replied that it is only I who could do that. His words filled me with positive energy. Even Mammootty couldn’t recognize me when I came to the location with the makeup on. But, such characters weren’t offered after that.

Your share a close bond with film maker Ranjith, right?

I think Rock and Roll was my first movie with him. It is only Ranjiyettan who calls me Ashok. Similarly, there was someone who called me chettayiye (elder brother). It was none other than Kalabhavan Mani. These are all very special to me. If someone calls me Ashok, I look back thinking that Ranjiyettan had called me. I can feel the love with which they call me these. These are people who aren’t cunning at heart. I don’t mean that others are. I consider it fortunate to have had the opportunity to act in his movies. He has written movies which narrate the stories with a unique and special depth. As far as I am concerned, I am extremely lucky to be considered one of his friends.

Do you think the absence of actors like Jagathy, Kalabhavan Mani and Cochin Haneefa has created a vacuum in Malayalam cinema?

essay on house in punjabi

I have no words to describe the significance of Jagathy chettan. He is someone who is indispensible in Malayalam cinema. It is extremely painful to see him stay away from the films. Mani left all of us at a young age. I haven’t seen anyone who behaves as innocently as Cochin Haneefa. He was a person full of love. Similarly he enjoyed humor a lot. Humor could be enjoyed like he did by only those who have a pure heart. They are all irreplaceable actors.

What is your favorite movie?

Everyone has different tastes and preferences. Be it a small movie or the ones which were successful or not, I have enjoyed doing all the roles. I still think I haven’t been able to essay any of the characters with perfection. When I watch Punjabi House, I feel that I could have done it better. No actor can play a role with utmost perfection. All the characters that we have done may have some shortcomings in it. However, Punjabi House still stays in the people’s hearts. As long as that movie stays in their hearts, I wouldn’t be out of the industry even if I take a break for 10 years. That is the significance of Punjabi House.

How was your experience working with Dileep?

I and Dileep have done many films together. We were together at Harisree too. We share a great chemistry as we are able to understand how the other person would react in a comedic situation. That is the reason why the humorous scenes that we did together became so funny and popular. For instance, actor Premkumar speaks with a unique rhythm while I talk fast. Dileep clearly knows that. A film in which I have worked with Dileep will soon be out.

What advice did you give your son when he made his entry into the movies?

It is difficult to get into the movies. However, it is extremely difficult to survive in it even if you manage to make an entry. I told him not to commit movies just to stay in the industry. I want him to do good roles and expect nothing else from anyone. When you act in a film, do one hundred percent justice to it. I advised him not to invite anyone’s hatred and to reach everywhere on time. Cinema industry actually belongs to the producer. We should always remember that a cinema is made when a producer spends his hard earned money.

Even if we work for an extra day or even ten more days, we shouldn’t ask for extra money. I told my son that he shouldn’t ask for more remuneration than what has already been agreed upon. I don’t want problems to be created at a movie set because of my son. This is an age when people ask for extra payment as high as Rs 1 lakh for working an extra day. We had nothing when we started out. I often advise my son to behave well to everyone and to play his roles wonderfully. It is always good to bid adieu from a set after completing that movie amazingly.

HARISHREE ASOKAN

Do you prefer to continue acting or directing?

I am acting in movies. I still am interested to act. But I will direct movies as well. I may direct a movie once in two years and act in films which I think are good. Some may become successful and some others may not. However, my latest movie is only what I have in my mind right now.
