You are here, thesis for bachelor students, introduction.

The bachelor thesis concludes the Bachelor phase. The thesis is either an article in which you report on a literature research or the thesis reports on a study that you carried out yourself (empirical thesis), under supervision of a staff member. As preparation for the bachelor thesis you can read the Handbook Writing Skills, the APA Cookbook and the information pages on AskPsy.

Entry requirement: 90 ECTS on 1 September.

Starting academic year 2022-2023,  you may only write your thesis in an academic year if you have at least 90 ECTS at the start of that academic year (always September 1st).   Source: Exam and Education Regulation . We observed that writing a thesis, while also taking part in new courses and having to work on deficiencies (failed courses), leads to unrealistic workloads. This new rule will hopefully prevent this. Contact us if you have questions about this requirement.

Suggested readings

Handbook Writing Skills v001 of 27 Aug. 2019 For APA guidelines we suggest to follow APA 7 (Cookbook) instead of APA 6 (Handbook Writing Skills). The handbook writing skills will be updated to APA 7.  The manuals show APA differences, for example for line spacing, use of horizontal indent, and keyterms. You can follow the cookbook APA 7 guidelines, except for: -use of keyterms. It is suggested to use keyterms in the abstract, -the supervisor's name and academic title. For the bachelor thesis it is  not  allowed to provide the supervisor's name and academic title, because of the anonymous second assessor. MaRBLe students provide the supervisor's name and academic title on the title page. APA cookbook  v001 of 12 Dec. 2020

N2 - This document lays down the requirements, options and best practices for ET-BE students writing a BSc or MSc thesis. Doctoral candidates are also recommended to follow these guidelines when writing papers or theses. It comprises several sections that describe the `rules' (requirements) and some advice for different aspects of a thesis. This document is not a template.Note that the requirements in this document are specific to the ET-BE department and might deviate from rules in other departments, faculties or study programs. It is obligatory that you investigate whether your study program has any specific thesis document requirements (often on a Canvas page). Program specific requirements supersede anything stated in this document. However, if program and department requirements are not in conflict, it is required to incorporate both. Supervisors are allowed to be more strict and specific, but not lenient with respect to the requirements given in this document. This document was adapted from the work of Prof. H. Vallery. Reading Sample Theses

As you prepare for your thesis, you might want to get a sense of what you can accomplish in your finished product. Reading past theses can show you the scope and nature of well-done undergraduate projects. Because theses in different areas of psychology often look quite different, it will help you to examine several in the same general area you plan to conduct your research in.

The Psychology Undergraduate Office has hard copies of several prize-winning theses from the past five years that you may sign out to see what the best undergraduate work looks like. Above, you can browse the titles of past undergraduate theses to give you an idea of the topics of theses students typically write.

Only hard copies of recent prize-winning theses are currently available.

Please note: Recent theses stored in the Social Relations Library (which recently closed) are unavailable. Inquirers needing a thesis that is not listed in HOLLIS should contact the authors of theses directly to attempt to obtain a copy.

Modules 11 and 12 of the programme focus on the final assignment. In the last two modules of your Bachelor Civil Engineering, you will have to do your Bachelor Thesis. Module 11 is a preparation for your bachelor final assignment and in module 12 students do their final assignment.

During your 10- or 11-week assignment, you will proof to have enough content knowledge, but also your capability to work systematically and report your work. You execute your assignment within in a Civil Engineering company/institution either in the Netherlands or abroad; this hands-on experience is the only way to link your obtained knowledge and skills with practice. You will have 2 supervisors; an external and an internal. The supervisor at the company you execute your assignment at, will supervise your daily work, whereas the supervisor at the UT will monitor the progression with regards to writing the thesis. The product you hand in at the end of the assignment, contains (among other things) a report in which the execution and results are described.

Before you can start with these modules, you are obliged to have finished ALL other parts of the Bachelor, meaning you need to have 150EC assigned in your Osiris-account.

Important contacts:

  • Ellen van Oosterzee , Overall Bachelor thesis coordinator
  • Peter Jansen  and Cor van den Berg , module coordinators Module 11
  • Mark van Buiten , Construction Bachelor thesis coordinator
  • Baran Ulak , Traffic Bachelor thesis coordinator
  • Martijn Booij , Water Bachelor thesis coordinator

Information sources

Currently, several parts of the whole procedure, such as the timeline and the set up of Module 11, are being revised. The information presented on this webpage is more general information. For the most up-to-date information, please check the Programme's website on the Bachelor thesis .

On this website, you find:

  • More information on what a Bachelor Thesis entails,
  • Information on what is expected of you and the supervisors ,
  • The Bachelor Thesis Manual ,
  • A checklist for Mobility Online,
  • An overview of all completed theses ,
  • An overview of some available theses ,
  • Information on going abroad with the Bachelor Thesis ,
  • The current timeline of Module 11 and Module 12 .

Furthermore, you can check essay.utwente.nl for more inspiration with full reports of passed theses in civil engineering.

Below, certain phases in the timeline are discussed.

Starting with your Bachelor thesis

You have to undertake several steps during the preparation of your Bachelor thesis. These are listed below.

  • Register in Mobility Online *
  • Choose a field of specialisation (Construction, Traffic or Water)
  • Wait for an email by the Bachelor thesis coordinator
  • Work through the first steps of Mobility Online
  • Intake meeting with the specialisation's Bachelor thesis coordinator
  • Start looking for a Bachelor thesis position
  • Once you have found a position, write an introductory research proposal. The specialisation's Bachelor thesis coordinator uses this to assign an internal supervisor.
  • Plan a meeting with your internal supervisor to discuss further steps
  • During Module 11 (or before), you can start developing your research proposal. This is an iterative process between you and your supervisors.
  • Once your research proposal is far enough and has been approved by the internal supervisor, you can start at the external location. Normally this is in week 9 of Module 11. Important note: if you start at the external location BEFORE your proposal has been approved, you are at risk of having your proposal and position at the external location declined.

* Mobility Online:  All internships at other educational institutes both in the Netherlands and abroad, graduation assignments and courses abroad must be registered in Mobility Online. You can see this as some sort of tracking application the UT uses to know where each UT-student is (if not at the UT) and what he is doing. You can find a manual on Mobility Online  here .
