The King has delivered his Christmas message after joining other members of the royal family at Sandringham to celebrate Christmas Day.

The festive address – the second of Charles’s reign since the death of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022 – was delivered at 3pm on Monday in Buckingham Palace’s Centre Room , which opens onto the famous balcony overlooking The Mall and was decorated with a living Christmas tree that will be replanted.

The King called on people to protect each other, delivered a powerful message about the environment and praised volunteers serving communities across the country.

Earlier, Charles and Camilla were joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis for morning service at St Mary Magdalene Church.

It comes after the King and Queen waved to well-wishers while attending a Christmas Eve service at the church on Sunday.

Royal Christmases traditionally feature the greeting of people outside the church, and a family lunch with turkey and all the trimmings.

Sandringham House has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs for more than 160 years, and now belongs to the King.

I’m a royal expert – here’s what you need to know about the Sandringham Christmas

Watch in full: Charles delivers 2023 King's Speech from Buckingham Palace

King’s speech broadcast opened with brass rendition of national anthem.

The annual broadcast, produced this year by ITN, began with military musicians from the Household Division brass ensemble playing the national anthem from a balcony overlooking Buckingham Palace’s quadrangle, and ended with the Bexley Music Primary Choir performing the carol “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks”.

Highlights from the royal year were screened, showing the King and Queen, the Princess Royal, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attending events.

Footage of William and Kate and their children arriving for the princess’s Westminster Abbey carol concert was also shown, and the film ended with Charles’s final coronation day appearance on the palace balcony.

King Charles was author of Christmas broadcast

The Christmas broadcast was written by the King and had a strong Christian element, a reflection of the head of state who described himself as a “committed Anglican Christian” during a reception for faith leaders after the death of Queen Elizabeth.

For the second successive year, the King recognised other faiths, describing how the “great religions of the world” celebrate festivals with a special meal and how it is the responsibility of “people of all faiths and of none” to care for the natural world.

King charles praises ‘selfless army of volunteers'.

King Charles, who launched his Coronation Food Project in November to support charities feeding the disadvantaged with unwanted produce, said: “We need to build on existing ways to support others less fortunate than ourselves.”

Against the backdrop of the Queen Victoria Memorial, Charles said: “Over this past year, my heart has been warmed by countless examples of the imaginative ways in which people are caring for one another – going the extra mile to help those around them simply because they know it is the right thing to do: at work and at home; within and across communities.

“My wife and I were delighted when hundreds of representatives of that selfless army of people – volunteers who serve their communities in so many ways and with such distinction – were able to join us in Westminster Abbey for the coronation earlier this year. They are an essential backbone of our society.”

Full report: King Charles offers message of hope amid ‘increasingly tragic conflict around world’

The King has called on people to “protect each other” as he said in his Christmas broadcast that the world is living through a time of increasingly tragic conflict.

Charles delivered his festive address – the second of his reign following the death of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022 – standing up in Buckingham Palace’s Centre Room, which opens onto the famous balcony overlooking The Mall.

My colleague Tara Cobham has the full report:

Charles offers message of hope amid ‘tragic conflict around world’ in King’s Speech

The Christmas broadcast, delivered at Buckingham Palace, is the second of Charles’s reign following the death of his mother the Queen

King Charles makes major departure from Queen in his Christmas speech

King Charles delivered the second Christmas address of his reign as monarch and it was noteworthy for what it included as well as what - and who - it left out, Maira Butt reports.

While his mother Queen Elizabeth II traditionally opted for a family-centred speech with images of her children and relatives in the backdrop, the King’s speech left out any mention of his loved ones at all.

However, a brief glance of Prince William and Kate were seen.

Royal family attend Christmas Day service at Sandringham

The royal family marked Christmas Day by attending the traditional festive church service on the King’s Sandringham estate.

Royal fans gathered as the Prince and Princess of Wales walked hand in hand with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis from Sandringham house on their way to St Mary Magdalene Church.

They walked behind the King and Queen, who were greeted by about a thousand local residents, many of whom had waited hours on Christmas morning to catch a glimpse of the family.

How King Charles and Queen Camilla are spending their Christmas at Sandringham

Most families have their own beloved Christmas traditions. Perhaps it’s playing a never-ending game of Monopoly, wearing your pyjamas all day or falling asleep to the murmur of the EastEnders Christmas Special. Whatever your tradition – the royal family has some of its own grander traditions, too, Ellie Muir reports.

Royal Christmases are alive with tradition and routine: a morning church visit, a roast turkey banquet, walking the Sandringham grounds, and opening presents with a little nod to their German roots.

Queen Elizabeth II famously hosted every Christmas at the family’s country estate in Norfolk since 1998 – and her son King Charles will likely continue the tradition in his first official year as King following his coronation in May.

How Harry and Meghan will spend Christmas this year

Despite murmurings of a possible reconciliation at Sandringham, it appears that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not be joining the royal family for their annual Christmas celebrations in Norfolk after all, Maanya Sachdeva reports.

The late Queen Elizabeth II hosted every Christmas at the royal estate since 1998, with her son King Charles III expected to continue the same tradition in his first official year as monarch since the coronation in May.

Last month, it was reported the couple would not turn down an invite to spend Christmas at Sandringham if they were asked, amid rumours that a reunion between Harry and Charles could be on the horizon.

an extreme close up of King Charles who is to give a speech on Christmas day 2022

Wondering what time the King's speech is on during Christmas Day? We've shared all the need to know details on how to watch.

Tinsel, turkey and all the trimmings - some things are synonymous with Christmas Day, and the annual monarch's speech is one of them. For the last 70 years, Brits and those across the Commonwealth have enjoyed a festive address from her late Majesty. But Christmas 2022 brings with it big change following the death of Queen Elizabeth II .

Now in the new Carolean era , audiences are getting ready to watch King Charles I's Christmas Day message - the first of his reign. For many households this will be a highlight of the Christmas TV schedule , so here's the details on time, channel and where this year's message is filmed.

What time is the King's Speech on Christmas Day?

As is tradition, this year's King's Speech will be broadcast at 3pm GMT on Christmas Day. 2022 marks King Charles' first Christmas Day message and the first address from a King in over 70 years.

The monarch's message to the nation has been televised since 1957, with Queen Elizabeth II recording 69 during her reign. The speech is not live, having instead been pre-recorded by the monarch a few days prior.

Several media outlets have claimed that King Charles filmed his speech on December 13. Buckingham Palace have since confirmed that the King recorded his message in the Quire of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle . He's seen standing next to a Christmas tree which is decorated with sustainable ornaments made of paper, glass and pine cones.

The chapel is also festively decorated in English foliage such as holly, berried ivy and red skimmia.

The filming location of Christmas speeches has varied over the years. Some have been previously recorded at Buckingham Palace, seeing as it's the primary residence of the British monarch. Sandringham in Norfolk - where the royals often spend Christmas - has also paid host to previous Christmas speeches. Sandringham is also where King Charles' great-great grandfather George V delivered the first ever Christmas speech to the nation - via radio in 1932.

The Queen's last Christmas Day message - which aired in 2021 - was also filmed from Windsor Castle. Sat behind a desk in the White Drawing Room, the Queen paid tribute to the late Prince Philip in her address, reflecting on Christmas being a difficult time for those who are missing loved ones.

What channel will the King's Speech be on?

This year the King's Speech will be available to watch on four channels: BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1 and Sky One . Starting at 3pm, the address to the nation will last approximately 10 minutes.

Since 1997, the monarch's speech has been shown by all three broadcasters - who take it in turn to record the message. They work on a rota-based system which changes every two years. The edited footage is then shared with the rest of the world's media so they too can broadcast it in other territories on Christmas Day.

What will the King's speech be about?

Buckingham Palace never reveal the contents of the Queen or King's speech in advance of the broadcast. However, it's thought that this year's address will almost certainly pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II who passed away on September 8, 2022.

After his speech, the broadcast will follow with a Christmas carol and the National Anthem performed by the St George's Chapel choir.

Jeremy Archer , author of A Royal Christmas agrees, sharing his thoughts with OK! magazine on how Charles will honour his late mother. "He’ll talk about how positive she was and how inclusive she was," he says. "It will be solemn and reflective, but it will show gratitude for her reign, her life and all the things she’s achieved."

The late Queen Elizabeth II sat next to her son King Charles I in 2017

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams agrees that The Queen will be at the heart of Charles' Christmas Day message. He told The National News : "I think it will be a very professional job, especially since he is well aware he will be the subject of such fascination. It is the first one.

"In a year that will obviously see the queen’s death and the magnificent funeral at the centre of the speech, there is no doubt he will pay a very moving tribute to her."

Ingrid Seward , editor of Majesty magazine is expecting a picth-perfect performance from the monarch in his first Christmas Day address. "Over many years of public speaking the king has acquired the delivery of a professional actor and I have no doubt it will be a masterly performance," she wrote in the latest issue of Majesty .

Who writes the King's speech?

King Charles I is expected to write his own speech shared at Christmas - much like his late mother. Queen Elizabeth II was known for writing her own festive message with support from her advisors.

The first royal message was 251 words long, though Queen Elizabeth II's speeches were lengthier - averaging 656 words. After the Christmas message has been broadcast, the full transcript of the speech is then available to read on the official Royal Family website .

The UK and Commonwealth have only witnessed one address from King Charles I since taking to the throne. Airing on September 9, 2022 - the day after Queen Elizabeth II died - Charles addressed the nation as the new monarch, sharing in their grief at the Queen's passing.

He concluded his speech: "And to my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you.

"Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May ‘flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest’."

When will the King give his Christmas speech this year? Here's how to watch

Having delivered a Christmas message for the first time in 2022 , King Charles III is set to once more give the address this month.

The monarch traditionally records the 10-minute message in advance of it being broadcast and it reflects issues of the year before culminating with a festive farewell.

Last year, the King spoke following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II . He said: “Christmas is a particularly poignant time for all of us who have lost loved ones. We feel their absence at every familiar turn of the season and remember them in each cherished tradition.”

This year has been a stellar one for Charles III, who has celebrated his 75th birthday and was also crowned in a ceremony back in May.

These events are likely to be addressed when he reads the message, but when will it be and when can you watch it?

the kings xmas speech time

What time is the King’s Christmas speech in 2023?

The speech will be broadcast at 3pm on Christmas Day.

“The Christmas Broadcast is an intrinsic part of Christmas Day festivities for many people across the Commonwealth ,” Buckingham Palace said.

“Each broadcast carefully reflects current issues and concerns, and shares The Monarch's reflections on what Christmas means to them and their listeners. Over the years, the Christmas Broadcast has acted as a chronicle of global, national and personal events which have affected The [monarch] and [their] audience.”

The first Christmas Broadcast was delivered by George V in 1932.

How can I watch Charles’s address?

The speech is usually shown on BBC One but also on iPlayer and the audio will be on BBC Radio 4 as well as BBC Sounds.

What alternative is there?

If the monarchy is not your thing, Channel 4 has your back at the same time on Christmas Day.

Another national treasure, Stephen Fry , will be giving the Alternative Christmas Message - following in the broadcaster's tradition. Danny Dyer and The Simpsons cast have also had the honour in years gone by.

What time is the King’s Speech on Christmas Day? When to watch Charles III address on TV and what to expect

It will be the first time a monarch other than elizabeth ii has delivered the televised address, which was first broadcast in 1957, having previously been confined to radio.

King Charles III will give his first Christmas Day speech on Sunday, and is expected to pay tribute to his late mother.

It will be the first time another monarch has delivered the televised address, which was first broadcast in 1957, having previously been confined to radio.

Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September after a record 70 years and 214 days on the throne . She used her final speech last year to honour her husband, Prince Philip .

Here’s how to watch Charles’ speech, and what to expect.

What time is the King’s Speech?

The King’s Speech has already been recorded. Charles delivered it at Sandringham on 13 December.

It will be aired on Christmas Day at the usual time of 3pm.

The speech is always played on multiple major channels, with BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1 and Sky One all carrying it.

Channel 4 always airs an alternative Christmas message, which this year will be delivered by an AI robot. Past efforts have come from the likes of Edward Snowden, the survivors of the Grenfell Tower disaster, and Danny Dyer.

The King’s Speech will be available to watch on the BBC iPlayer and ITVX catch-up services shortly after it airs.

What will King Charles say?

Little is known about the subject of Charles’ speech, other than that he is all-but certain to pay tribute to the late Queen.

“I’m quite sure he’ll spend as much time talking about his mother as he does about everything else,” historian Jeremy Archer told OK! magazine .

“He’ll talk about how positive she was and how inclusive she was. It will be solemn and reflective, but it will show gratitude for her reign, her life and all the things she’s achieved.”

The King may choose to mention the cost of living crisis , which has affected the lives of tens of millions of people across the UK this year.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine , which began back in February, is another likely topic.

More from News

Charles has always been a staunch campaigner on climate change , so he may choose to draw attention to this issue in his address.

There is also the question of how he may handle family politics – namely the recent documentary series released by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Netflix , which is heavily critical of the Royal Family.

However, experts have predicted the King will disappoint anyone hoping for an acknowledgement of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s claims.

Longstanding royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told i he thought the “centrepiece” of the speech will be the Queen and “her amazing reign”.

He also predicts the King will follow his mother’s example of paying tribute to certain members of the family. Last year, the Queen spoke fondly of Charles and his wife, Camilla, and also of William and Kate, for their climate activism .

He expects the Prince of Wales will receive a special mention for his environmentalism during this year’s speech.

“I would suggest a tribute to William and the Earthshot prize is very likely,” he said.

Asked if Meghan and Harry will get a mention, the commentator said: “Oh, absolutely not.

“All the indications are the Palace would prefer to ride the current crisis – for that is what it must be called – out without any statement of any sort.”

Everything we know about the King’s Christmas Day speech this year

It will be the first delivered by a male monarch in almost 70 years

This year was a pretty monumental one in the UK . We saw the death of the late Queen in September, and a new King was crowned following her 70 years on the throne. Since then, we’ve got used to a new national anthem, and the first King Charles III coin was announced two weeks ago .

It will be the King’s coronation in March next year, but before we get to that, there’s another tradition to get ready for. King Charles III will make his first speech on Christmas Day this year, which will mark the second time Charles will address the country following the death of his mother. Here’s everything we know about the King’s 2022 Christmas speech.

When will King Charles III make his speech?

The King will give his first speech as King at 3pm on Christmas Day. The speech itself was actually pre-recorded by His Majesty on December 13 at Sandringham, but will be shown on the telly on December 25.

Where can I watch it?

King Charles III’s speech will be shown at 3pm on BBC One, BBC Two, ITV One and Sky One. You can also catch up with it afterwards on BBC iPlayer and ITVX.

How long is the speech?

Definitely set your alarms, because it’ll be over before you know it. The King’s speech lasts just ten minutes from start to finish.

What will the King say in his speech?

We don’t know exactly what he’ll say, of course, but it’s likely he will speak about his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Last year, the Queen paid tribute to her late husband Prince Philip, who had died in October 2021.

Historian Jeremy Archer recently told OK! magazine that the speech will be ‘solemn and reflective’. He said: ‘I’m quite sure he’ll spend as much time talking about his mother as he does about everything else.’

King’s Speech 2023: What time is it on Christmas day and how to watch

The royal tradition allows the sovereign head of state to reflect on the year and values of the nation in a ten minute pre-recorded speech

King Charles III is seen during the recording of his first Christmas broadcast in the Quire of St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle

  • 10:12, 24 Dec 2023

King Charles ' second Christmas Day speech as monarch is nearly upon us. Royal fans and critics alike are waiting to hear how he will reflect on the year which has passed.

Last year, it was King Charles' first King's Christmas Day speech in nearly seventy years, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II . He said: "Christmas is a particularly poignant time for all of us who have lost loved ones. We feel their absence at every familiar turn of the season and remember them in each cherished tradition."

Ever since the first festive address of this kind was delivered in 1932, the annual tradition has become a key event for families across the country, who gather together to remind themselves of what has come and what to look forward to in the next year.

Here's what you can expect from the 2023 speech, plus how and where to watch it.

What time is the King's speech?

King Charles' festive broadcast is set to air on Monday, December 25.

The speech is due to be broadcast at 3pm on Christmas Day in keeping with tradition.

It will be shown on BBC One, BBC Two, ITV , and Sky News. On BBC One, the broadcast will be followed by a screening of Toy Story 4. Meanwhile, In For a Christmas Penny will follow the broadcast on ITV.

For those looking to watch online, the Christmas Address has also been streamed on the Royal Family YouTube Channel and Facebook page in the past.

What to expect

The contents of the King's Speech aren't known yet and won't be revealed until broadcast. However, the Christmas address typically reflects on the events of the year.

It's expected that King Charles III will speak about his coronation, alongside the issues affecting the UK and broader global events, before looking ahead to 2024.

How many people will watch the King's speech?

Millions of Brits are expected to watch the King's speech on Christmas Day. Last year, King Charles’s Christmas Day message was the most watched address by a monarch on record, viewing figures have shown.

Around 10.6 million tuned in for the eight-minute briefing. Back in 2020, the Queen's speech was crowned the most viewed programme of the day after 8.2 million people turned in. Meanwhile, the 2021 version brought in a staggering 9.1 million viewers - again securing the top spot.

What will be different this year?

This year's message from King Charles will reflect his green credential by including a living Christmas tree for the first time.

It was covered with “natural and sustainable decorations, including hand turned wood, dried oranges, brown glass, pine cones and paper” and it will be replanted.

There were no clues to content of Charles second Christmas address, recorded in the Palace’s Centre Room, part of the private quarters and near the balcony where he celebrated his Coronation.

Charles, 75, is said to have written the 10-minute speech without the help of his advisers.

King Charles echoes Queen Elizabeth's words as he gives first Christmas message

King Charles III has delivered his first Christmas message, paying tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, and echoing his late mother's words about grief.

Key points:

  • King Charles said Christmas was a "poignant time" for those who have suffered loss
  • He said he was deeply touched by public messages of "love and sympathy"
  • Video of the Royal Family, including Prince William and Princess Kate, appeared on screen while he spoke

Last Christmas, Queen Elizabeth spoke of her personal pain after losing her husband Prince Philip earlier that year.

In the speech on Sunday, King Charles said Christmas was "a particularly poignant time for all of us who have lost loved ones".

Queen Elizabeth died on September 8 at the age of 96 and was remembered in a state funeral at Westminster Abbey on September 19.

Thanking those who had sent "deeply touching" messages of condolence to him and the Queen Consort Camilla, he said the Royal Family had been shown "love and sympathy".

He also drew upon the late Queen's "faith in God" and "faith in people," saying he shared it "with my whole heart".

Charles delivered his pre-recorded message standing in St George's Chapel in Windsor, where the Queen and Prince Philip are both buried.

Video footage of the royal family, including Prince William and Princess Kate of Wales, appeared on screen while he spoke.

In a separate pre-recorded message broadcast to the nation as part of a Westminster Abbey carol service, the Princess of Wales said the royal family's first Christmas without the late monarch would "feel very different".

In his message, Charles also paid tribute to public sector and healthcare workers, charities, and religious institutions, praising the latter for their work during the UK's ongoing cost of living crisis.

He ended his speech by referring to a previous visit to Bethlehem, the town where Jesus was born, and "the power of light overcoming darkness".

"It is in this life-giving-light and with the true humility that lies in our service to others that I believe we can find hope for the future," Charles said.

"Let us therefore celebrate it together and cherish it always."

His message ended with a rendition of 'O Little Town of Bethlehem,' which Charles used to cite the late Queen's "belief in the power of that light," performed by the choir of St George's Chapel.

The monarch’s first ever Christmas broadcast took place in 2022 following the death of his mother, the Queen.

Last year the King reflected on the death of the Queen after a 70-year reign.

He said: “Christmas is a particularly poignant time for all of us who have lost loved ones. We feel their absence at every familiar turn of the season and remember them in each cherished tradition.”

Traditionally, the 10-minute speech is recorded in advance of the broadcast and will reflect the issues that have dominated the year before the monarch sends festive best wishes.

It’s been a big year for Charles - with his coronation and 75th birthday taking place, as well as being his first full year as King. So these could be topics people can expect to see covered.

What time is the King’s Christmas speech today?

The King’s speech will be broadcast on BBC One at 3pm and will be available on iPlayer, while the audio will be on BBC Radio 4 as well as BBC Sounds.

Buckingham Palace said: “The Christmas Broadcast is an intrinsic part of Christmas Day festivities for many people across the Commonwealth.

King’s Speech 2022: Charles III’s first Christmas address - what time, where is it on and what he might say?

Will Millar

SEO and Trends Writer

On December 25, King Charles III will deliver his inaugural Christmas address to the nation - the first time a King has ever delivered a televised speech on television. The world will be watching. The royal tradition allows the sovereign head of state to reflect on the current year and reinstate national values.

In the speech, King Charles will be expected to pay tribute to his late mother and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who passed away earlier this year. Last Christmas, Her Majesty used the time to commemorate the loss of her husband Prince Phillip.

Here’s everything you need to know about King Charles III’s speech on Christmas Day, including what time the address is and what to expect.

When will King Charles III’s Christmas speech be broadcast on TV?

The monarch’s Christmas speech will be broadcast at 3pm on Sunday, December 25 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The time hasn’t changed since King George V delivered his Christmas speech via radio broadcast in 1932.

What to expect from King Charles III’s Christmas speech?

As usual, the content of the sovereign’s Christmas speech is confidential but it is likely a bulk of the broadcast will be used to pay tribute to his late mother Queen Elizabeth II, who served as Queen of the United Kingdom from February 6 1952 to September 8 2022.

Historian and author Jeremy Archer told OK! magazine : “He’ll talk about how positive she was and how inclusive she was. It will be solemn and reflective, but it will show gratitude for her reign, her life and all the things she’s achieved.”

During his reflection on the year as a whole, King Charles III may touch upon the cost of living crisis, the Russo-Ukrainian war, climate change and COP27. While many will be eager to see if Harry and Megan receive a mention, it’s likely King Charles will keep it formal.

FACT FOCUS: A look at claims made by Trump at news conference

Trump lashes out at Harris, recommits to a Sept. 10 debate at hourlong news conference

In his first news conference since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for president, former President Donald Trump said he would debate her on Sept. 10 and pushed for two more debates. The Republican presidential nominee spoke for more than an hour, discussing a number of issues facing the country and then taking questions from reporters. He made a number of false and misleading claims. Many of them have been made before.

Here’s a look at some of those claims.

CROWD SIZES

Image

CLAIM: “The biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken — I’ve spoken to the biggest crowds. Nobody’s spoken to crowds bigger than me. If you look at Martin Luther King when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people, if not we had more. And they said he had a million people, but I had 25,000 people.”

THE FACTS: Trump was comparing the crowd at his speech in front of the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, to the crowd that attended Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial.

But far more people are estimated to have been at the latter than the former.

Image

Approximately 250,000 people attended the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, at which King gave his speech, according to the National Park Service . The Associated Press reported in 2021 that there were at least 10,000 people at Trump’s address.

Moreover, Trump and King did not speak in the same location. King spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial , which looks east toward the Washington Monument. Trump spoke at the Ellipse , a grassy area just south of the White House.

CLAIM: “Nobody was killed on Jan. 6.”

THE FACTS: That’s false. Five people died in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and its immediate aftermath. Pro-Trump rioters breached the U.S. Capitol that day amid Congress’ effort to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Among the deceased are Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter shot and killed by police, and Brian Sicknick, a police officer who died the day after battling the mob. Four additional officers who responded to the riot killed themselves in the following weeks and months.

Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran from San Diego, was shot and killed by a police officer as she climbed through a broken part of a Capitol door during the violent riot. Trump has often cited Babbitt’s death while lamenting the treatment of those who attended a rally outside the White House that day and then marched to the Capitol, many of whom fought with police.

DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION

Image

CLAIM: “The presidency was taken away from Joe Biden, and I’m no Biden fan, but I tell you what, from a constitutional standpoint, from any standpoint you look at, they took the presidency away.”

THE FACTS: There is nothing in the Constitution that prevents the Democratic Party from making Vice President Kamala Harris its nominee. That process is determined by the Democratic National Committee.

Harris officially claimed the nomination Monday following a five-day online voting process, receiving 4,563 delegate votes out of 4,615 cast, or about 99% of participating delegates. A total of 52 delegates in 18 states cast their votes for “present,” the only other option on the ballot.

The vice president was the only candidate eligible to receive votes after no other candidate qualified by the party’s deadline following President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race on July 21.

THE ECONOMY

CLAIM: Suggesting things would be different if he had been in office rather than Biden: “You wouldn’t have had inflation. You wouldn’t have had any inflation because inflation was caused by their bad energy problems. Now they’ve gone back to the Trump thing because they need the votes. They’re drilling now because they had to go back because gasoline was going up to 7, 8, 9 dollars a barrel.”

THE FACTS: There would have been at least some inflation if Trump had been reelected in 2020 because many of the factors causing inflation were outside a president’s control. Prices spiked in 2021 after cooped-up Americans ramped up their spending on goods such as exercise bikes and home office furniture, overwhelming disrupted supply chains. U.S. auto companies, for example, couldn’t get enough semiconductors and had to sharply reduce production, causing new and used car prices to shoot higher. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March 2022 also sent gas and food prices soaring around the world, as Ukraine’s wheat exports were disrupted and many nations boycotted Russian oil and gas.

Still, under Biden, U.S. oil production reached a worldwide record level earlier this year .

Many economists, including some Democrats, say Biden’s $1.9 trillion financial support package, approved in March 2021, which provided a $1,400 stimulus check to most Americans, helped fuel inflation by ramping up demand. But it didn’t cause inflation all by itself. And Trump supported $2,000 stimulus checks in December 2020, rather than the $600 checks included in a package he signed into law in December 2020.

Prices still spiked in countries with different policies than Biden’s, such as France , Germany and the U.K. , though mostly because of the sharp increase in energy costs stemming from Russia’s invasion.

IMMIGRATION

CLAIM: “Twenty million people came over the border during the Biden-Harris administration — 20 million people — and it could be very much higher than that. Nobody really knows.”

THE FACTS: Trump’s 20 million figure is unsubstantiated at best, and he didn’t provide sources.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports 7.1 million arrests for illegal crossings from Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024. That’s arrests, not people. Under pandemic-era asylum restrictions, many people crossed more than once until they succeeded because there were no legal consequences for getting turned back to Mexico. So the number of people is lower than the number of arrests.

In addition, CBP says it stopped migrants 1.1 million times at official land crossings with Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024, largely under an online appointment system to claim asylum called CBP One.

U.S. authorities also admitted nearly 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela under presidential authority if they had financial sponsors and arrived at an airport.

All told, that’s nearly 8.7 million encounters. Again, the number of people is lower due to multiple encounters for some.

There are an unknown number of people who eluded capture, known as “got-aways” in Border Patrol parlance. The Border Patrol estimates how many but doesn’t publish that number.

CLAIM: Vice President Kamala Harris “was the border czar 100% and all of a sudden for the last few weeks she’s not the border czar anymore.”

THE FACTS: Harris was appointed to address “root causes” of migration in Central America. That migration manifests itself in illegal crossings to the U.S., but she was not assigned to the border.

NEW YORK CASES

CLAIM: “The New York cases are totally controlled out of the Department of Justice.”

THE FACTS: Trump was referring to two cases brought against him in New York — one civil and the other criminal.

Neither has anything to do with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The civil case was initiated by a lawsuit from New York Attorney General Letitia James. In that case, Trump was ordered in February to pay a $454 million penalty for lying about his wealth for years as he built the real estate empire that vaulted him to stardom and the White House.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a state-level prosecutor, brought the criminal case . In May, a jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex.

___ Associated Press writers Melissa Goldin and Elliot Spagat and economics writer Christopher Rugaber contributed to this article. ___

An earlier version of this story mixed up “latter” and “former” in the third paragraph. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, drew a far larger crowd than Donald Trump’s speech near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021.

Trump lashes out at Harris and Biden, pledges there will be a peaceful transfer of power: 5 takeaways

WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump on Thursday lashed out at Vice President Kamala Harris , pledged there will be a peaceful transfer after the 2024 election and compared the crowd sizes of his supporters to those at Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech.

The former president also told reporters during a spot news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate that he wants to participate in three debates against Harris – before addressing issues ranging from Florida ballot measures to interest rates and the presidency.

Here are USA TODAY's top takeaways from Trump's remarks.

Attacking his new opponent

Trump, who has lost the lead he had on President Joe Biden in polls and is now in a dead heat with Harris, amped up attacks on his new opponent.

Trump targeted Biden and Harris' handling of the issues facing the nation, particularly the southern border. But his comments on Thursday were also personal, making false claims about the vice president's intelligence and race.

Harris is Black and Asian, and Trump in recent weeks has taken swipes at her racial identity. During an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists  Annual Convention, he said "I didn't know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black."

Trump repeatedly said he is leading in the 2024 election, but polls have told a different story since Biden ended his campaign and Harris replaced him as the Democratic pick.

As the former president conducted his news conference at Mar-a-Lago, the Real Clear Politics average of recent polls actually give Harris a slight lead over Trump., 47.6% to 47.1% (though that margin is well within the margins of error of those surveys.)

But Trump didn't only knock Democrats during his press conference. He also targeted fellow Republican and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp,

While the former president has long attacked Kemp for not supporting his specious 2020 election fraud allegations, Trump told reporters: "I've never understood it. When you get somebody elected, they're supposed to like you."

In a statement, the Harris campaign on Thursday described Trump’s news conference as “a public meltdown … He lied. He attacked the media. He made excuses for why he’s off the campaign trail.”

Pledging a a peaceful transfer

Trump on Thursday also criticized Biden for saying that the transfer of power after the 2024 election might turn violent if the ex-president loses the race to Harris.

"Of course there will be a peaceful transfer," Trump said. "I just hope we have honest elections." The former president has falsely said for years that fraud impacted the result of the 2020 presidential election, claims that were denied by courts across the country.

In an interview this week with CBS News, Biden said he is "not confident at all" in a peaceful transfer if Trump is defeated.

"He means what he says ... we don't take him seriously ... He means it; all the stuff about 'If we lose, there'll be a bloodbath, it'll have been a stolen (election)," Biden told CBS News.

Trump earlier this year told a crowd of supporters in Ohio that "if I don't get elected, it's going to be a bloodbath," while talking about the American auto industry and Chinese imports.

Voting on abortion and marijuana

Trump did not disclose how he plans to vote on a pair of Florida state referendums on sensitive social issues: Protecting abortion rights and loosening marijuana laws. The measures would legalize recreational marijuana in Florida and guarantee abortion access in the state .

"I don’t want to tell you now," Trump said when asked about the abortion vote. "But Florida does have a vote coming up on that and I think probably the vote will go in a little more liberal way than people thought."

Weighing in on interest rates

At one point, Trump also said presidents should have "some say" over interest rates and monetary policy, an idea sure to draw opposition from investors who do not believe that markets should be subject to political whims. The Federal Reserve is supposed to be politically independent as it sets interest rates and makes other key decisions.

“I feel that the president should have at least say in there, yeah, I feel that strongly,” Trump said, adding “I think I have a better instinct than, in many cases, people that would be on the Federal Reserve, or the chairman.”

Comparing crowd size to Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech

While attacking Harris, Trump downplayed the size of the crowds the vice president is drawing at campaign events, while exaggerating his own crowds. Trump's comments about the size his campaign rallies and other events date back to his 2017 inauguration.

At one point during his Thursday press conference, Trump said he has drawn crowds bigger than the one Martin Luther King, Jr., had during the 1963 civil rights march rally at the Lincoln Memorial as he delivered his now-famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

That event saw 250,000 people, and Trump's claim immediately drew rebukes from scholars like Pulitzer Prize-winning King biographer Jonathan Eig. The NAACP also immediately criticized Trump's comments.

On the social media site X, Eig said: "Um, Donald, please see me after class."

Kamala Harris participated in a mock presidential debate on Monday at Howard University in Washington, taking time out of her campaign schedule to refine her approach to former President Donald J. Trump before their scheduled debate on Sept. 10.

Ms. Harris is working on her debate preparations with a small group of advisers, several of whom have known her since before she became vice president. Her debate preparations were confirmed by three people briefed on the plans but who were not authorized to publicly detail them.

Ms. Harris has participated in at least one other mock debate in recent days, two of those people said.

Rohini Kosoglu, a former policy director who was a chief of staff to Ms. Harris in the Senate and later left the vice president’s office in 2022, is helping lead the preparations. So is Karen Dunn, an attorney who helped prepare Ms. Harris for her vice-presidential debate in 2020.

Sean Clegg, a former lead strategist on Ms. Harris’s 2020 campaign, has also been brought on to help, according to several people briefed on the plans but who were not authorized to publicly detail them. (Ron Klain, who has prepared several Democratic presidential nominees, and President Biden for his disastrous debate against Mr. Trump on June 27, is not expected to aid Ms. Harris. But he has offered to help Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, Ms. Harris’s running mate, prepare for a debate against Mr. Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, according to a person briefed on the discussions. Mr. Walz’s debate prep team has not yet been set.)

Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump agreed to participate in a presidential debate , hosted by ABC, on Sept. 10. Their respective campaigns are hashing out whether or not the two would appear onstage together again and, if so, how many times. On Thursday, Ms. Harris’s campaign proposed one more, in October, saying “the debate about debates is over.”
