Getting my PhD was basically the project of my 20s, and the adult I've become is totally inseparable from my academic work. Even if I never get a permanent position in or near academia it was worth it. Earning a PhD is hard, and there's a lot of bullshit, but it's also an amazing, transformative experience.

Being called "stale goods on the market" isn't very nice, also, your PhD will never ever be worth nothing.
