When considering medical jobs, nurses and doctors—careers requiring college or advanced degrees—often come to mind. However, many jobs in hospitals and other health care facilities require significantly less education. Of the 15 million health care jobs in the United States, more than 8.5 million positions require less than an associate’s degree. 

Using BLS salary and education data from May 2023, we analyzed hospital jobs that do not require a degree and ranked them by average wage. The typical education for the below jobs does not require a college degree. They need only a certificate or, in some cases, just a high school degree. 

Key findings: 

  • It's possible to earn an above-average salary without getting a degree. Four of the 18 careers analyzed have average salaries higher than the average salary for all occupations in the U.S. The rest earn less than the national average. Surgical technologists ($60,610 per year), vocational nurses ($59,730 per year), hearing aid specialists ($58,670) and massage therapists ($55,310) all earn more than the median salary for all occupations, $48,060 per year. 
  • The fastest-growing job is also the lowest-paying job. Home health aide jobs will increase faster than any other health care job that does not require a college degree over the next ten years. Home health aide jobs will grow by 21.7 percent, from 3.7 million jobs to 4.5 million between 2022 and 2032. According to the BLS, the need for home health aides results from an aging population. Even so, home health aides are the lowest paid health care workers—they earn $33,530 per year or $16.12 per hour.
  • Think twice before becoming an optician, pharmacy aide or medical transcriptionist. Although most health care jobs are growing faster than the national average, the BLS predicts that two of the jobs we analyzed will have fewer jobs in 2032 The BLS predicts that the number of. Most jobs we analyzed had growth rates faster than  The BLS estimates that the number of pharmacy aides will decrease by 1.2 percent and the number of medical transcriptionists will decrease by 1.8 percent.

Salary: $60,610 per year or $29.14 per hour 

Typical education: Certificate or diploma

Surgical technologists assist with surgeries. They are members of a surgical team and work with doctors and nurses. Surgical technologists are often responsible for setting up and assisting in the operating room during operations. Some responsibilities include preparing patients for transport, holding instruments or maintaining a proper sterile field during the surgery. They are also known as Certified Surgical Technicians, Certified Surgical Technologists (CST), Surgical Technicians or Surgical Techs.

2. Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses (LPNs and LVNs)

Salary: $59,730 per year or $28.72 per hour

LPNs and LVNs take care of patients and perform nursing duties—such as charting or basic patient care—under the supervision of doctors and registered nurses. They often work in hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities. To become an LPN or LPN, you must complete a state-approved diploma or certificate program before obtaining a license. LVN and LPN programs typically take a year to complete.

3. Hearing Aid Specialists

Salary: $58,670 per year or $28.21

Typical education: High school diploma or equivalent

Hearing aid specialists help customers select and fit hearing aids. They earn more on average than any other health care profession that does not require an associate's or bachelor's degree. However, there are relatively few hearing aid specialist jobs in the U.S. The BLS estimates that there are only 10,200 hearing aid specialists in the United States.

4. Massage Therapists

Salary: $55,310 per year or $26.59 per hour

Massage therapists improve their clients' general health and wellness by touching, kneading or manipulating muscles and soft tissue. Most states regulate massage therapy and require massage therapists to complete a certification program before taking a licensing exam such as the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx). Massage therapy programs typically require students to complete at least 500 hours of study and experience. ‍

5. Dental Assistants

Salary: $46,540 per year or $22.38 per hour

Typical education: Certificate or diploma 

Dental assistants work in dental offices. Some of their responsibilities include caring for patients, maintaining medical records or taking x-rays. Licensing requirements differ by state. Some require graduation from an accredited program, while others allow on-the-job training.

6. Medical Equipment Preparers

Salary: $45,280 per year or $21.77 per hour

Sterile environments are crucial for hospitals and other health care facilities. Medical equipment preparers, also known as Central Processing Technicians  (CPT) or Central Sterile Supply Technicians (CSS Technicians), are responsible for sterilizing, installing and cleaning health care and laboratory equipment.

7. Opticians

Salary: $44,170 per year or $21.23 per hour

Opticians use prescriptions from ophthalmologists and optometrists to help clients select glasses or fit them for contacts. Many opticians work in doctor's or optometrist offices. Others work in stores selling glasses or contacts. Some states require opticians to be licensed. 

8. Medical Assistants

Salary: $42,000 per year or $20.19 per hour

Medical assistants work in physician offices, hospitals and other health care facilities. They perform clinical tasks such as measuring patients' vital signs, height and weight and administrative tasks such as recording patient medical information. Medical assistants typically have completed a certificate or diploma program. In some states, medical assistants can perform clinical tasks, such as injections.

9. Phlebotomists

Salary: $41,810 per year or $20.10 per hour

Phlebotomists, phlebotomy technicians or registered phlebotomists draw blood from patients. They take blood samples for lab work or draw blood for transfusions or donations. They primarily work in hospitals and diagnostic laboratories (think LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics). 10. Ophthalmic Medical Technicians

Salary: $41,780 per year or $20.09 per hour

Ophthalmic medical technicians assist ophthalmologists. Some possible job responsibilities include administering eye exams and eye medications or teaching patients how to use and care for contact lenses.  ‍

11. Pharmacy Technicians

Salary: $40,300 per year or $19.37 per hour

Pharmacy technicians work with pharmacists to help dispense medication. They typically work in pharmacies, which can be found in hospitals, grocery stores and other locations. Most states regulate pharmacy technicians by requiring them to pass a test or complete a program.

12. Psychiatric Technicians

Salary: $39,700 per year or $19.09 per hour

Typical education: Certificate or diploma  

A psychiatric technician is a health care professional who provides direct care and support to individuals with mental health disorders and developmental disabilities. 13. Emergency Medical Technicians

Salary: $38,930 per year or $18.72 per hour

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a healthcare professional who delivers emergency medical care and transportation for critically ill or injured individuals outside a hospital setting. Their primary responsibilities include responding to 911 emergency calls, assessing patients' conditions, providing basic life-saving care, stabilizing patients, and safely transporting them to medical facilities. EMTs work closely with other first responders and medical staff, ensuring effective communication and detailed documentation of patient care and observations.

EMTs are trained to perform basic medical and first-aid procedures such as administering CPR, using automated external defibrillators (AEDs), providing oxygen therapy, assisting with childbirth, treating wounds, and controlling bleeding. They also immobilize fractures and spinal injuries and can administer certain medications like epinephrine for severe allergic reactions. EMTs primarily work in ambulances but may also collaborate with fire departments, air rescue teams, or private ambulance services. Medical transcriptionists listen to reports by physicians or other medical professionals. They transcribe and translate the reports into an understandable form. 16. Orderlies

Salary: $36,830 per year or $17.71 per hour

Orderlies are hospital attendants who perform non-medical duties. These duties can include transporting patients, managing supplies, assisting with daily living activities, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of patient rooms.

17. Pharmacy Aides

Salary: $36,200 per year or $17.41 per hour

Typical education: High school diploma or equivalent  

Pharmacy aides work in pharmacies. They help manage inventory and often operate the cash register. They’re also known as pharmacy assistants, pharmacy clerks or drug purchasers. 

18. Home Health and Personal Care Aides

Salary: $33,530 per year or $16.12 per hour

Typical education: High school diploma or equivalent 

Home health aides help the elderly, people with disabilities or chronic illnesses with daily living activities. They typically work in clients' homes or group homes. 7 Rewarding healthcare jobs you can launch without a degree

Healthcare jobs are different than any other industry. In this way, the world of healthcare is friendly to career changers as well as to professionals who need to get started in a new job, earn a paycheck and get a feeling for the role before they invest in extra education.

If you have a high school diploma (or equivalent), here are some healthcare careers you should consider.

1. Medical administrative assistant

If you've ever visited a clinic or hospital, a medical assistant is most likely the first person you saw. These medical professionals greet patients, assist healthcare providers and generally oversee the process of getting patients scheduled, checked in and ready for their care.

Medical assistants (MAs) work in a variety of medical settings to perform basic administrative tasks. Their daily duties include answering the phone, collecting patient information, scheduling appointments and greeting patients when they arrive in the waiting room.

If you’re an organized person who can handle a variety of tasks and with customer service skills, this is a great entry-level position for you.

Education requirements: There are no formal requirements for this career beyond a high school diploma (or similar). If you have any experience with a customer service role, that would be a great thing to include on your application.

Medical assistants have a big impact on patient experience. Remember, sometimes you'll interact with people who could be facing a terrifying appointment, dealing with loss or (if you work in a hospital) facing sudden disaster. A patient and compassionate presence is crucial.

4. Pharmacy technician

A pharmacy technician works directly under the supervision of a pharmacist in performing a variety of tasks. 5. Clinical medical assistant

Clinical medical assistants work on the clinical side to support physicians and nurse practitioners.

They might take a patient’s vital signs, help a provider with examinations, administer injections or prepare a blood sample for lab work. If you want hands-on clinical experience without spending years earning a college degree, this is the position for you. This is also a great entry-level healthcare career if you’re hoping to gain some clinical experience to leverage in the future.

To get some of the formal training an employer might prefer, earning a Medical Assisting Diploma is a great option. A medical assisting diploma program can be completed in as few as 12 months. 2

6. Certified nursing assistant (CNA)

Nursing assistants provide basic daily care for patients. Common tasks include assisting patients with eating, bathing and dressing as well as taking vital signs and reporting new information to nursing staff.

This role can be similar to that of a patient care technician (or to that of a medical assistant who works directly with patients) depending on the state. Patient care technicians, MAs and certified nursing assistants are all in a category of unlicensed assistive personnel in healthcare.

Nursing assistant positions are most common in long-term care environments when patients need consistent help performing daily functions of living. But you can find these types of roles in many different health care settings.

Nursing assistants have a physical job that often involves moving patients, from bed to wheelchair for example, as well as transporting them to different spaces in the facility for meals or treatments. Nursing assistants also clean and restock supplies in their assigned areas.

Because they work with the same patients day after day, many nursing assistants establish close connections with the people they care for.

Education requirements: Many nursing aide positions only require a high school diploma, with some employers looking for certified nursing assistants. To become a CNA, most states require you to have a high school diploma (or similar) and pass a screening. Then you can apply for certified nursing assistant (CAN) training. These typically take just a few weeks.

7. Licensed practical nurse (LPN)

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) work under both registered nurses and physicians to provide nursing care. Their duties may include changing bandages, checking blood pressure and helping patients perform a variety of self-care tasks like bathing or dressing. The work will vary depending on the setting and state.

If you’re considering a career in nursing but aren’t ready to commit to a higher degree, becoming an LPN is the way to go.

Education requirements: LPNs must be educated through a state board-approved program in order to be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN ® ) through the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. It is important to check with the state board of nursing for the state you wish to be licensed in.

If you are interested in becoming an LPN, look for a Practical Nursing Diploma accredited by a national nursing accrediting agency that is recognized by the United States Department of Education. These programs typically take about a year to complete and combine classroom and supervised clinical experience. 2

There are two types of nursing that do not require a degree: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN/LVN). You don't need to be in college to become a CNA or LPN, but both roles can be a starting point to long-term  nursing career goals . Within the healthcare industry, there are several jobs that don't require a degree. Many of these roles focus on distinct, targeted tasks that play a specific function in patient care. 

Medical assistants, paramedics, and phlebotomists are examples of healthcare jobs that perform a specialized range of medical procedures such as taking blood, performing CPR, or working with technology such as sonography. A degree is not necessary because these healthcare roles get trained on specific tasks that are not dependent on additional education.  

There are also types of nursing that do not require a degree. These entry-level positions play crucial roles in facilitating patientcare. 

Nursing jobs that don’t require a degree:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) : A CNA provides hands-on patient care. Daily tasks may include patient grooming, bathing, and dressing, as well as aiding in mobility, eating, and exercise. 
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) : An LPN works under doctors and RNs to perform basic patient care. Daily tasks may include taking vitals, blood, and other fluid samples, as well as changing bandages, inserting catheters, monitoring health stats, and more. 
  • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) : LVN and LPN are the same role with slightly different titles, depending on the state. California and Texas use the “LVN” title while the remaining states use “LPN.” 

CNAs, LPNs, and LVNs all work under doctors and registered nurses (RNs). Because doctors and RNs receive more education through their degree programs, they have more authority to make major patient-care decisions. CNAs and LPNs follow the care plans and recommendations made by healthcare professionals with higher education. All of these roles work together as a unit to ensure patients have all the care they need. 

Do you need college to be an LPN or CNA? 

No, you don’t need college to become an LPN or CNA. Registered nurses must complete either a 2-year associate’s degree or a 4-yearbachelor’s degree through an accredited college, whereas LPNs and CNAs have to complete certification programs, often from a vocational school, community college, or online program.  

Prerequisites for CNA and LPN certification may include:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Background check 
  • Physical health assessment

There are big differences in tuition costs and time spent when comparing CNA vs. LPN certification. While CNA hopefuls can get certified in a matter of weeks, LPN certification can take up to a year and a half. But, the more time you commit to your education, the more money you'll earn.

LPNs can pursue additional certifications in specialized care areas such as patient counseling, hospice care, and more. The more education you have, the more earning potential available.

What do you learn as an LPN or CNA? 

CNAs and LPNs provide different levels of patient care. CNAs are responsible for much of the hands-on tasks that keep patients clean, fed, and comfortable, whereas LPNs are responsible for more administrative tasks such as updating records, handling medication, and more. 

During the certification process, future LPNs and CNAs will learn:

Communication skills : LPNs and CNAs are part of a larger care team, and must share patient information quickly and accurately so important details don’t slip through the cracks. 

Empathy : Nurses at all levels need compassion and understanding to relate to their patients’ needs. 

Basic nursing skills : A major component of LPN or CNA certification will cover how to perform all the daily tasks of the role at hand.  

Attention to detail : Updating patient charts and delivering medication requires accuracy every time, making precision crucial. 

Medical terminology : Learning the language of healthcare enables LPNs and CNAs to effectively write and discuss patient status. 

Flexibility : While healthcare is a science, things can change in an instant, so nurses must learn how to quickly change gears and adapt as necessary.  

What can an LPN do vs. an RN?

Having a degree makes a significant difference between what an LPN can do vs. what an RN can do. The biggest difference in responsibilities is that LPNs handle practical, straightforward tasks whereas RNs handle bigger picture holistic tasks. 

Typically, LPNs will carry out healthcare plans as set by RNs and doctors. They monitor overall health by checking vitals and reporting back to managing RNs. RNs can then perform diagnostic tests and advise on possible treatments.   

Having a degree gives RNs more authority over patient care and other nursing team members. RNs often supervise LPNs and delegate work appropriately. While LPNs play a crucial role in patient comfort and care, RNs are ultimately responsible for calling the shots.

Some people think of healthcare field jobs in terms of doctors, surgeons, and nurses, and may assume that careers in healthcare require years of education and an advanced degree. But the truth is that you can train for some of today’s fast-growing healthcare jobs in  under a year — or earn a relevant associate degree in less than two years, depending on the individual student.

In fact, the BLS forecasts that the employment of healthcare support jobs is projected to be the fastest-growing employment group among all occupational groups. 2

1. Dental Assistant

As the job title implies, dental assistants help dentists and their staff with a wide range of tasks. They may prepare patients for treatment, take dental x-rays, aid the dentist during procedures, and educate patients on preventative tooth and gum care.

Some dental assistants serve in more of an administrative role. Their responsibilities might include assisting in office management, scheduling appointments, record keeping, billing, and insurance processing. Your specific tasks will depend on your workplace.

Dental assistant training programs  typically prepare students to provide support in both chair-side and administrative capacities. Some programs include education in  expanded functions , such as coronal polishing, sealant placement, and making and removing temporary crowns.

According to the BLS, most states do not require licensing for entry-level dental assistant jobs; however, registration or certification — such as the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) credential — may be required to perform expanded functions. 3

Health and human services assistants often work for social service agencies, nonprofit organizations, or local or state governments.

Some workers may get their start in these types of healthcare field jobs with a high school diploma and on-the-job training; however, the BLS notes that a diploma or  degree  is becoming more common. 5 An associate degree can help demonstrate a graduate’s qualifications for careers in healthcare and human services.

They need to know how to correctly code diagnoses, treatments, and procedures in EHRs for billing and insurance reimbursement.

Postsecondary education is typically required for health information technician jobs since these technicians are expected to know relevant medical terminology and codes. The BLS notes that most employers prefer to hire candidates who hold relevant industry certification, such as the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential. 7

Individuals who are intrigued by both computers and healthcare can combine these interests by pursuing a career in  health information management . Professionals in these types of healthcare field jobs may be responsible for managing healthcare records, troubleshooting healthcare software, and/or providing help desk support.

According to the BLS, many employers accept computer support applicants with an associate degree, while others may require a bachelor’s degree. 12 In the case of healthcare technology jobs, employers generally expect candidates to have knowledge of medical records management and related software and applications.

6. Medical Administrative Assistant

Administrative assistants  work in many different industries. While the BLS reports an overall decline in these types of positions, healthcare administrative jobs are the one area that is growing. 14

Most administrative assistants are expected to have computer skills and knowledge of office systems and equipment. Medical administrative assistants can go a step further and be familiar with medical diagnosis and procedure codes, electronic health records management, and medical transcription.

The BLS notes that medical administrative assistants generally require  training  in medical terminology and industry-specific practices. 15 A diploma or associate degree can provide the necessary academic background. Students may also wish to pursue the  Certified Medical Administrative Assistant  (CMAA) designation to enhance their qualifications, though it’s not typically required.

Graduates may wish to pursue the  Certified Billing and Coding Specialist  (CBCS) designation to help them stand out from other applicants with similar education.

This role may appeal to those looking for healthcare jobs that don’t require years of training since students can earn their nursing assistant diploma in as few as eight weeks.* According to the BLS, nursing assistants must complete a state-approved education program and competency exam. 19 In some states, this role is referred to as a  Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA ), though the title can vary by state.

However, patient care technicians may pursue further education and industry credentials to help position themselves as a highly-qualified candidate and potentially increase their salary.

For example, some  patient care technician programs  train students to perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) and phlebotomy (blood draws), and may prepare them for the  Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant  (CPCT/A) exam and/or the  Certified Phlebotomy Technician  (CPT) exam.

According to the BLS, some  pharmacy technician programs  award a diploma while others last a bit longer and lead to an associate degree. 21 Many states and employers require candidates to be certified. Those who pursue these types of healthcare jobs may be expected to hold the  Certified Pharmacy Technician  (CPhT) designation or similar credential.

13. Phlebotomy Technician

Phlebotomy technicians , also known as phlebotomists, are responsible for drawing blood for medical tests and transfusions or for collecting blood donations.

People in these types of healthcare field jobs typically work in doctor’s offices, hospitals, and medical laboratories. Some may work in blood donor centers and bloodmobiles. In addition to drawing blood, they will typically prepare and label the sample for testing or processing and may enter information into patient or donor databases.

Due to the nature of their work with patients, phlebotomists are typically expected to have formal training. 23 Phlebotomy technician programs may be completed in as little as 12 weeks depending on the individual student.* The BLS notes that nearly all employers prefer to hire phlebotomists with professional certification, such as a  Certified Phlebotomy Technician  (CPT) credential. 23

9. Forensic Nurse - $65,466 per year

Forensic nurses help solve crimes and collect evidence. They can also help a coroner determine a cause of death. They provide compassionate care to crime victims and survivors of natural disasters. Forensic nurses can also testify in court during criminal trials.

The National Commission on Correctional Health Care offers the CCHP-RN certification to eligible individuals. Prior to obtaining the CCHP-RN certification individuals must earn the CCHP certification.

I have Australian and US citizenship and plan on travelling from Georgia via Abkhazia to Russia. Has anyone actually crossed this border at the Inguri River? Once I have my Abkhazian "visa" permit, should I expect any real problems? Should I expect to have to pay bribes?

I am aware that this border crossing cannot be done in reverse which is why I will have a Russian "single entry visa" to leave at the other end at the Psou border crossing with Russia.

I understand the rules may be quite different for citizens of Georgia and Russia so I'm really interested if somebody has experience crossing this border as a foreigner (particularly citizens of Australia or United States).

Thanks for your help and suggestions, I've read the border near Vladikavkaz is closed to non Russian or Georgian citizens if not it would be handy and spectacular since I'm heading to Vladikavkaz after Abkhazia.

Please note, that it is forbidden to enter Georgia after visiting Abkhazia or South Ossetia. Will try to find out about the border post regime.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Im Louie from New Zealand. Do you actually need a visa to go from Georgia to Abkhazia ? I thought it was a province of Georgia, or maybe Russians have taken it back.

I'm Emily- I am hoping to do this same trip. Yes you do need a visa- according to Georgian rules you don't but once you enter Abkhazia you are "unofficially" under Abkhazian rules, whether Georgia agrees or not, you won't make it across the border without a permit. I recommend reading up on it in the Lonely Planet guide but it involves contacting the Abkhazian ministry of foreign affairs http://www.mfaabkhazia.net about a month before you leave, obtaining a faxed or emailed permit for the dates you intend on staying and then getting it stamped at the border- this permits you to get in but you must then head to Sukhumi to sort out your visa in person before leaving (this next step will permit you to leave). Russia and Abkhazia a good neighbours and Russia has attempted to take Abkhazia under its wing but it is officially part of Georgia. Russians may visit Abkhazia without a visa but everyone else needs one even though it is not the official law in Georgia.

Hope this helps. When you do go on your trip, could you let me know how you go? as I am doing this same trip in July/August.

Thats great thanks Emily ! I'm expecting to be in and out of Georgia within about 10 days during the month of June. So I will be able to let you know. I have heard the people from the Caucuses are about the most hospitable folks in the world and I hope to see some dance. If you have ever seen it on Youtube ? I think it will be the best thing ever. Of course the NZ government travel advisory says don't go there. So that information tells me I will definatly have the best time there and its probably the safest place to be. I'll keep in touch :) Louie

Circled by a picturesque chestnut forest, Aul Tkhagapsh is surrounded by many visually-arresting natural landmarks – a mysterious rock formation called “the canyon of a hundred crying eyes”, beautiful waterfalls with organically formed stone basins and the Tiger cave, which is called so because of the whimsical clay dripstones. Despite its tiny size, the village itself has a lot to offer. You can see the only wooden mosque on the coast, learn about the customs and traditions of the Adyghe people, try on traditional clothes and taste authentic food and local wines.

If you love picturesque ancient ruins put the Loo Temple on your must-see list. Drowning in the lush greenery of the Sochi National Park, Loo Temple is the remains of a 10th-century Byzantine temple, that’s been ruined and reconstructed multiple times. The temple was used as a place of worship and a fortification over the years.

Aibga Ridge

This spectacular mountain ridge stretches for 23 kilometers and has the Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort nestled at its feet. The ridge comprises of 10 peaks, with the four tallest being the best known: Aigba peak I (2391 m), peak II (2450,5 m), peak III (2462,7 m) and Black Pyramid (2375,3 m). Save a day or two to explore the ridge, full of rapid rivers, alpine meadows and waterfalls.

Achepsinskie Waterfalls

To admire the spectacular views that Achepsinskie Waterfalls offer, you’ll have to endure a pretty tiring trekking route through the Achishkho Mountain to the Achipse River. Arguably the most popular tourist spot near Sochi, Lake Kardyvach is simply breathtaking. Situated 44 kilometers from the Krasnaya Polyana resort at the altitude of 1838 meters, the lake stays frozen for seven to eight months a year and even in summer the water temperature is never hotter than 12℃. The water in the lake changes its color depending on the time of year: in spring it turns green and in autumn it becomes dark blue, and no matter what season, it’s unbelievably clear. Akhshtyrskaya Cave

A unique monument of prehistoric architecture, Akhshtyrskaya Cave is set on the right side of Akhshtyrskaya Gorge, about 120m above the Mzymta River and 185m above sea level. The cave begins with a 20m corridor and then gets divided into two halls, 10m and 8m wide. The cave has been heavily explored by archaeologists, who discovered traces of Neanderthal culture dating back to 40,000 BC.

5. Krasnaya Polyana Mountain Cluster

Before the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, Sochi was mostly known as a summer holiday destination. However, today it also welcomes travelers in the winter season who enjoy what is often referred to as the ‘Russian Switzerland’, one of the most popular and beautiful mountain clusters in the country: Krasnaya Polyana.

This complex is reachable by the railroad line built to connect the resort to the airport and by bus as well. 7. Dagomys Tea Plantation

If you want to taste something unique, you can visit the Dagomys Tea Plantation. Sochi is famous for being the only place that produces tea in Russia and, thanks to particular weather conditions, they have the northernmost plantations in the world. You can participate in a guided tour that explains the history of tea in the region inside an izba, a traditional log house. In there, you will also enjoy a traditional 19th-century style Russian tea party while listing to a folklore group.

If you want to take some of those flavors home with you, you can purchase the local black and green varieties, renowned for their delicate flavors, at the plantation shop. Operation hours vary during the year and the facilities are closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in winter.

8. Olimpiyskiy Park

Built for the Winter Olympics of 2014, Olimpiyskiy Park is right on the shore of the Black Sea in Adler, south of Sochi. It houses amenities used for the Games and has been adapted for the general public with services like food and ice cream stalls. Among the facilities that you can see inside the complex it is the Fisht Olympic Stadium, which has a 40,000-capacity and served as a venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the games; it was reopened as a football stadium in 2016.

You can rent a bike at the front gate to explore it or hire a rickshaw tour to explore it, since it is very big. One of the most popular attractions at the park is The Waters of the Olympic Park fountain, which showcases a show with water, lights and music every day at 7 pm.

10. Riviera Park
