Kean's Status as State’s Urban Research University Boosts Aid to Students

Kean University students eligible for state Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) awards will receive an average increase of 14% in their funding for the 2024-2025 school year due to Kean’s designation as New Jersey’s urban research university.

The increased awards – which make the state’s most affordable public university even more affordable – will provide an average increase of $1,103 per year to the roughly 3,900 Kean students receiving TAG grants. 

The increase is due to state action aligning the value of Kean’s TAG grants to the amount of awards given at other public research institutions. Kean was named by lawmakers as the state’s urban research university in 2021.

“Kean University has always been committed to making higher education accessible and affordable, and this increase in TAG funding will provide a direct, positive benefit for our TAG-eligible students,” said Kean President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. “This boost in financial aid reflects our strength as a research university and our powerful role as an anchor institution serving communities across New Jersey.”

A total of 3,970 Kean students received TAG awards in 2023-2024, with the average award totalling $6,627. Under the new funding guidelines, more students are expected to be eligible for the TAG program in the coming school year.

According to an announcement from the state, the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) Board on July 24 adopted a Tuition Aid Grant table for the coming academic year. The Board set 2024-2025 grants equal to those of the prior year, but this year, Kean’s status as a New Jersey public research institution was factored into the University’s awards. The Board’s actions were approved by Governor Phil Murphy on July 25.

Kean Senior Vice President for Administration Michael Salvatore, Ph.D., said the investment by the state “puts the exclamation point on affordability” at Kean. 

“Affordability is a key commitment at Kean University. We are dedicated to ensuring that a top-tier education remains accessible to all,” Salvatore said. “This investment by the State of New Jersey perfectly aligns with our mission to foster a more innovative and inclusive society through equity and excellence.”

Katherine Gallagher, Kean’s senior vice president for student success, emphasized the long-term benefits of the increased TAG awards for students.

“This increase in TAG grants is a significant victory for our students. It will make Kean even more accessible and play a crucial role in advancing our mission of promoting social mobility,” Gallagher said. “By easing the cost of enrollment, these grants will help reduce financial burdens, minimize education-related debt, and pave the way for our students to achieve lasting success.”

Barbara Harmon-Francis, Ed.D., vice president for the Kean Division of Student Success and Retention, highlighted the significance of the increased TAG awards in making higher education attainable for more students.

Requesting a Large Number of Directories

This guidance is for those interested in requesting a large number of print directories housed in the John Adams Building including Street Address, Criss-Cross, Telephone Books, and City Business Directories. These directories are not in the catalog, so there are separate steps for requesting these items. Please read these policies carefully before making a request:

• Directories are served in the Science & Business Reading Room on the 5th floor of the John Adams Building. 
• Directory requests need to be submitted in person via paper slip at the book services desk in the Science & Business Reading Room.
• There is a maximum of 40 directories per person per day . Requests that contain more than 40 directories will be truncated at 40 items. 
• We strongly encourage submitting bulk directory requests at least 24 hours in advance in person. Same day requests can take up to 2 hours.
• Directory requests need to include (a) type of directory: Street Address, Criss-Cross, Telephone Book, or City Business), (b) location, including state, and (c) specific years. Library staff will only pull the volumes that are specifically requested.
• Once you’ve arrived, check in at the book service desk so staff can deliver your cart of directories.
• No carts are kept in the reading room overnight; let staff know if you plan to continue to use the directories at a future appointment.

Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering & Science Welcomes 21 New Faculty and Lecturers for the 2024-2025 Academic Year

The Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science at Stevens Institute of Technology welcomes 16 new tenure stream and non-tenure stream faculty members and five lecturers for the 2024-25 academic year. The new hires span eight departments and the globe, with research areas including pertinent topics such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, healthcare innovation and more. With these new additions, the Schaefer School has now added 111 tenure stream and non-tenure stream faculty over the past seven years.

Another strong hiring year showcases the school’s ability to both attract top academic talent and nurture early career  faculty who excel in their fields. These 21 new faculty members join a school that is riding the momentum of consecutive records for research funding, including $38.2 million in the 2023-24 academic year.

N.J. college center solves 3-year-old missing persons case from 1,000 miles away

A New Jersey college center that focuses on identifying human remains has for the first time identified a missing person in an active investigation, officials said.

Staff and students from the Ramapo College Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center identified a man whose remains, which were a foot and leg bones, were found in a creek in October 2021 near St. Louis, Missouri.

Though a cause of death has not been determined, it was a result that offered solace to the man’s survivors, said Cairenn Binder, assistant director of the Ramapo College center.

“It did resolve a missing persons case. The family was searching for their lost loved one and did not know where he was. This was something that gave answers for them that they were waiting for,” Binder told NJ Advance Media.

The outcome in Missouri was the first time that the Ramapo College center secured an identification in an active or “hot case,” defined as an unsolved crime or accident that remains under investigation, since it launched in December 2022.

Investigative genetic genealogy, commonly referred to as IGG, relies on advanced DNA testing and public records research, such as U.S. Census records and social media accounts.

“If a person recently went missing, we can sometimes find clues they left behind on the internet,” Binder said.

Students and staff at the center have made five other identifications, among approximately 65 cases brought to the center in the past 20 months.

“IGG has traditionally been used as a ‘last ditch’ investigative effort, primarily in cold cases where there are no other investigative avenues to pursue. Seeing as how this relatively new technology has effectively given new hope in thousands of DNA investigations, it should be looked at earlier in investigations to more quickly resolve cases before they go cold,” Binder said.

Investigative genetic genealogy has drawn some criticism stemming from the possible impact on privacy , due process and Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.

“It’s a debate that’s constantly happening. The goal is to identify the unidentified. People don’t have a right to privacy when their DNA is left at a crime scene,” Binder said.

No arrests have been made stemming from the Ramapo Center’s work.

The Ramapo center is the first center in the nation to offer case work, research and education in investigative genetic genealogy, according to the college. Its 15-week certificate program offers four classes per year with has space for up to 25 students per class, with a $6,000 tuition fee. Binder is director of the certificate program.

David Gurney, the center’s director, is an assistant professor of law and society at Ramapo College who previously had a fellowship with the Wrongful Conviction Clinic — now known as the University of Arizona Innocence Project — at the University of Arizona.

“The goal is to secure justice, for the victims of violent crimes, for the people whose identities have been lost after their remains went unidentified, and for people who were wrongfully accused or convicted of crimes,” Gurney told NJ Advance Media in 2022.

Ramapo College’s involvement in the Missouri case dates to February when Lindsay Trammell, forensic anthropologist with the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office, contacted the center based on the recommendation of a colleague, not identified by the college, who previously partnered with the center.

Within a month, extract from previous DNA testing had been sent to Genologue in Tucker, Georgia, for whole genome sequencing to create a DNA profile. Bioinformatics was performed by Intermountain Forensics in Salt Lake City, Utah, the college said.

In May, a profile was generated and uploaded to GEDmatch Pro, a free, open-source website where people may submit their DNA data.

“When we upload an advanced DNA profile for an individual, the output that we get is a list of genetic matches. It could be a parent or cousin, but in this case, we saw a list that included fairly close cousins,” Binder said.

Within days, students at the center had identified as a possibility the unidentified person who went missing in 2021. A relative was contacted and agreed to provide a DNA sample.

On July 16, 2024, the center’s identification was confirmed by the St. Louis County Police Department.

The man’s name is not being released publicly at the request of his family, Binder said.

Trammell, in a statement released by Ramapo College, praised the center’s work.

“My experience working with Ramapo staff and students has been exceptional, not only because of the identification that allowed one family to have answers about what happened to their loved one, but because they are genuinely invested and interested in their work,” Trammell said.

While most of the center’s cases are from New Jersey, it also has done work in Arizona, California, Florida, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Ohio, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio and Wisconsin, the college said.

NSF announces 4 new Engineering Research Centers focused on biotechnology, manufacturing, robotics and sustainability

Engineering innovations transform our lives and energize the economy.  The U.S. National Science Foundation announces a five-year investment of $104 million, with a potential 10-year investment of up to $208 million, in four new NSF Engineering Research Centers (ERCs) to create technology-powered solutions that benefit the nation for decades to come.   

"NSF's Engineering Research Centers ask big questions in order to catalyze solutions with far-reaching impacts," said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. "NSF Engineering Research Centers are powerhouses of discovery and innovation, bringing America's great engineering minds to bear on our toughest challenges. By collaborating with industry and training the workforce of the future, ERCs create an innovation ecosystem that can accelerate engineering innovations, producing tremendous economic and societal benefits for the nation."  

The new centers will develop technologies to tackle the carbon challenge, expand physical capabilities, make heating and cooling more sustainable and enable the U.S. supply and manufacturing of natural rubber.  

The 2024 ERCs are:  

• NSF ERC for Carbon Utilization Redesign through Biomanufacturing-Empowered Decarbonization (CURB) — Washington University in St. Louis in partnership with the University of Delaware, Prairie View A&M University and Texas A&M University.   CURB will create manufacturing systems that convert CO2 to a broad range of products much more efficiently than current state-of-the-art engineered and natural systems.    
• NSF ERC for Environmentally Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub (EARTH) — University of Kansas in partnership with Lehigh University, University of Hawaii, University of Maryland, University of Notre Dame and University of South Dakota.   EARTH will create a transformative, sustainable refrigerant lifecycle to reduce global warming from refrigerants while increasing the energy efficiency of heating, ventilation and cooling.    
• NSF ERC for Human AugmentatioN via Dexterity (HAND) — Northwestern University in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, Florida A&M University, and Texas A&M University, and with engagement of MIT.  HAND will revolutionize the ability of robots to augment human labor by transforming dexterous robot hands into versatile, easy-to-integrate tools.     
• NSF ERC for Transformation of American Rubber through Domestic Innovation for Supply Security (TARDISS) — The Ohio State University in partnership with Caltech, North Carolina State University, Texas Tech University and the University of California, Merced.   TARDISS will create bridges between engineering, biology, and agriculture to revolutionize and on-shore alternative natural rubber production from U.S. crops.  

Since its founding in 1985, NSF's ERC program has funded 83 centers (including the four announced today) that receive support for up to 10 years. The centers build partnerships with educational institutions, government agencies and industry stakeholders to support innovation and inclusion in established and emerging engineering research.

NJCCR’s primary objectives include:

• Review and authorize approved cancer research projects;
• Apportion all available funds to qualifying research institutions to finance approved research projects and necessary institutional support services;
• Ensure that funds appropriated to approved research projects are not diverted to any other use;
• the causes of cancer;
• pain management and palliative care for persons diagnosed with cancer and
• Provide the Governor and the Legislature with an Annual Report describing the state of the commission’s activities and the results of its funded research efforts.

Each year the NJCCR receives a state appropriation to facilitate its mission of advancing cancer research in New Jersey. Additional funding for research grants comes from donations made on New Jersey State Individual Tax forms line #71 and proceeds from the specialty Conquer Cancer license plates .

Research is the animating force of science—and of a School of Science education. Our students learn to be scientists by learning to do research. Overturning old assumptions. Revealing new knowledge. Sharing our discoveries with the scientific community in the conviction that the small victories of the lab accumulate into the major advances of science. Scientific inquiry drives undergraduate education in the School of Science, energizing our curriculum and defining our culture.

As research apprentices and junior collaborators, our students tackle authentic research questions with the potential to add significant insights to our body of knowledge. Through the many opportunities to conduct research, in and out of the lab, on and off-campus, our students not only develop the attitudes and aptitudes of the scientist, they learn to take responsibility, display initiative and creativity, and work collaboratively and productively as part of a team. These are skills valued well beyond the laboratory and across all scientific and mathematical endeavors.

So successful are we in integrating research throughout the undergraduate experience that the Council on Undergraduate Research recognizes TCNJ as a national exemplar for high-quality undergraduate research—one of only three institutions in the county to receive the honor.

Our curriculum is designed around scientific discovery, with research integrated across both classroom-based and laboratory courses. Guided by teacher-scholars who are influential scientists and mathematicians, students learn foundational research skills, from reading the primary scientific literature to mastering classic and cutting-edge research techniques using advanced instrumentation. Through these shared curricular experiences, students learn to work collaboratively on inquiry-based investigations, as they construct hypotheses, develop research proposals, and engage in the technical, investigative, and analytical skills of the scientist.

Partnering in Faculty-Mentored Collaborative Research

Our students are strongly encouraged to conduct faculty-mentored research as part of their curriculum, choosing an independent project or a mentored internship in an ongoing research program. Students might run lab experiments using advanced instrumentation, or foray into the field to collect data and gather specimens. Close guidance from faculty mentors ensures that students take ownership of their research as junior collaborators, not passive observers. Each year, nearly half of our students contribute new knowledge to science through mentored research.

In collaboration with Rutgers University and Princeton University as a consortium cancer center , we are leveraging the scientific discoveries of the state’s leading cancer researchers. We are keenly focused on fulfilling the cancer research needs of the most densely populated and industry-rich state in the nation.

Rutgers Cancer Institute research programs and core facilities enhance and support the cancer research of more than 230 members at Rutgers University and Princeton University, including the Princeton branch of Ludwig Cancer Research. Based at Princeton University, the Ludwig Princeton Branch is dedicated to the study of cancer metabolism. Combined with Ludwig’s leadership in cancer epigenetics and immunotherapy, advances in cancer metabolism generated at the Ludwig Princeton Branch will inform new strategies for cancer prevention and treatment. The clinical translation of Branch discoveries will be conducted in the tri-state area, including in partnership with RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute.

Our research programs include: behavioral science, precision medicine, systems biology, oncogenesis, tumor virology and immunology, autophagy, and drug development and resistance. This is in addition to exploring cancer control and prevention, bioinformatics, cancer genomics, and the relationship between cellular and genetic alterations and tumor development.

Through seminal scientific discoveries that have key translational implications, Rutgers Cancer Institute continues to expand its foundation of knowledge and understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of cancer – how it forms, why it persists, and what causes it to spread through the body. Our state-of-the-art clinical care is fueled by our clinical research studies , enabling us to make some of the most important advances in the prevention and treatment of multiple cancer types.

Clinical research studies, including clinical trials, help us better understand human health and disease. Our clinical research units conduct more than 450 clinical trials each year. As a clinical trial research volunteer, you can be a partner in health care discovery.
