University of London theses

The Library holds a copy of most research degree theses completed by students registered at UCL and awarded by the UoL, including many from students at Schools and Institutes prior to merger with UCL. Theses are listed by author on the Library catalogue, Explore : they are shelved in our off-campus Store and may be retrieved for consultation (24-hour notice required) by completing the store request form or via the request link on Explore. Theses are not available for loan, either to individuals or via interlibrary loan.

Some UoL research degree theses submitted by UCL students in the areas of classical, Germanic, Latin American studies; history and law are not held: check the UoL School of Advanced Study catalogue for availability.

UCL started to award its own degrees to students registering from 2007/2008. Print copies of research theses are catalogued by author in Explore and shelved in Store; electronic versions are in many cases available on open access in UCL Discovery .

If you wish to access a thesis recorded in UCL Discovery for which the full text is subject to an access restriction or not present, it is best to contact the author directly to request a copy privately.  If this is not possible, please contact the UCL Open Access Team .

If a thesis is not available via UCL Discovery or EThOS (see below) then it might be possible to obtain a copy from our interlibrary loan service via your home university interlibrary loan department. Please contact your university library and ask them to enquire about this service with UCL's Interlibrary Loan service; e-mail [email protected] for more information.

The Library does not normally hold print copies of any theses in the following categories:

  • MA, MSc, MRes, LLM theses.
  • Diploma theses.
  • Undergraduate dissertations.
  • Theses submitted at other universities or colleges.

Further information is available in the Support for dissertations and research projects LibGuide .

A growing number of open access thesis repositories is becoming available including:

  • ProQuest , holds many full text theses. You can search for dissertations and theses there.
  • UCL Discovery , UCL's open access research repository, includes theses alongside other UCL publications. You can search for theses, or browse a list.
  • EThOS , a database run by the British Library that aims to record all UK doctoral theses, with links to access an electronic version of the full text where available. The digitisation of theses that only exist in print form can often be requested, depending on the awarding institution and for a fee: UCL supports this process for UCL-held theses.
  • The DART-Europe E-theses Portal , holds details of open access electronic theses stored in repositories across Europe.
  • Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations , includes links to a number of international search tools and portals.

Indexes of completed theses (access available to members of UCL only)

Proquest dissertations & theses global (pqdt global).

PQDT Global contains over a million full-text dissertations and theses from 1861 onwards that are available for download in PDF format. The collection includes PQDT UK and Ireland content.

Many UK universities now decline to lend research theses. You may visit the awarding university or, increasingly, obtain an electronic version either from the university itself or from EThOS (see above).

Theses awarded by universities worldwide may be requested via UCL Library Services Interlending and Document Supply service . The normal charge for this service applies. Please note that theses are never available for loan: they must be consulted on Library premises only.

Open access for theses: how to deposit

Candidates for UCL research degrees are required to deposit an electronic copy of their final thesis in UCL's Research Publications Service (RPS), to be made open access in UCL's institutional repository, UCL Discovery . Theses are amongst the most highly-downloaded items in UCL Discovery . Making your thesis open access will mean that it is accessible worldwide, to anyone who wants to read it.

It is also possible, but not mandatory, to submit a print copy of your thesis to the Library for storage and preservation if you wish. We recommend submitting the print copy in cases where the electronic copy cannot be made openly available online in UCL Discovery, but you wish the print copy to be accessible to members of the Library.

Please refer to our guidance on how to deposit  for further information on the submission procedures.

Project nano MSc Thesis

Profile image of shrihith A

Nanobiofabrication of metal oxide nanoparticles from plants, particularly zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) received global attention due to plentiful applications in medicines. Nanotechnology can be termed as the synthesis, characterization, exploration and application of nanosized materials for the development of science. It deals with the materials whose structures exhibit significantly novel and improved physical, chemical, and biological properties, phenomena, and functionality due to their nano scaled size. Owing to their size, nanoparticles have a larger surface area than macro-sized materials. zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) is a promising antimicrobial property against blood-borne, food-borne and water-borne pathogens. Zinc oxide nanoparticles are testified efficiently to protect over a broader UV range than any of the molecular UV-absorbers, photocatalytic degradation of environment pollution, biocompatibility in drug delivery mechanisms and as nanofertilizers and nanoantibiotics. There are physical/chemical methods to synthesize metal nanoparticles. These methods have limitations of applied value that pose hazards to ecosystem. The objective of this work was to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles nontoxic route from aqueous extract of Cymbopogan winterianus (L.) Jowitt. ZnO NPs are prepared by wet phytoextract mediated method with varying the concentration of of Cymbopogan winterianus (L.) Jowitt leaves extract. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of green synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles tested against pathogenic microorganisms. Particle size and morphology of the as-prepared ZnO powders were characterized by UV-vis spectrometer analysis, Powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy and the average size of the ZnO NP was found to be 40 to 55nm. In vitro study of antibacterial activity of Wurtzite ZnO nanoparticles tested by micro broth dilution technique using a broad-spectrum antibiotic (tetracycline) as positive control. The antifungal activity was evaluated by using food poison technique. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration was 0.025 µg/mL for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli; 0.25 µg/mL for Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and minimum bactericidal concentration was 0.25 µg/mL for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli; 2.5 µg/mL for Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The complete growth inhibition was at 100 μg/mL of ZnO NPs for Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum and Phomopsis azadirachtae. These studies demonstrate that ZnO NPs have wide range of antimicrobial activities towards various pathogenic microorganisms. The results obtained in the present research work indicate that the inhibitory efficacy of ZnO NPs is significantly dependent on its chosen concentration and size. The result validated the development of a rapid and eco-friendly single-pot biological method of zinc oxide nanoparticle synthesis exploiting the reducing and capping potential of Cymbopogan winterianus. The need for a process to synthesize such nanoparticles in a reliable and green way are becoming more impressive. Current chemical and physical methods involve toxic chemicals and high temperatures that are not only hazardous to the environment but costly too. The global emergence of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms presents one of the greatest challenges in public health care today. Indeed, third-generation antibiotics such as cephalosporin are also becoming ineffective in many patients suffering from nosocomial infections. Nanomaterials have a great many medical applications, which are growing rapidly to lead to the wide-scale production and application of engineered nanoparticles

Biosynthesis of nanoparticles by biological means especially plant extract plays a major role in the field of nanotechnology. In the present study, the aqueous extract of lemon peel (Citrus limon) was used for the green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles using 0.1 M Zn(NO 3) 2 as a precursor in alkaline condition using NaOH with vigorous stirring for 3 h. ZnO NPs obtained were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy in which the surface Plasmon resonance was 310 nm, followed by XRD, FTIR that showed appropriate speaks for various chemical groups present including ZnO NPs and AFM results shows monodispersed in nature. Further, the antibacterial property of ZnO NPs synthesized by the green method was revalued by the well diffusion method. The zone of inhibition was found to be 9 mm for 100 µL and 7 mm for 100 µL for respective strains Klebsiella aerogene and Serratia marcescen. Significant antioxidant activity was exhibited by NPs through scavenging of 1, 1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals. Thus, the use of aqueous peel extract as a capping agent would improve the antibacterial property of ZnO nanoparticle and can be developed as antibacterial agents against a wide range of microorganisms to control and prevent the spreading and persistence of bacterial infections. Followed by Edax and Zeta was also included.

Objective: Objective of the study was to synthesize and characterize Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NP), and to evaluate their application on some bacterial strains. Methods: ZnO NP was synthesized by chemical methods. Then decomposed by using conventional heating process. The detailed characterization of the nanoparticles was performed using FT-IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction analysis and XRF. From the analysis of XRD pattern, UV-VIS spectroscopy and XRF, the formation of nanoparticles was confirmed. Antibacterial assay of synthesized ZnO NP was carried out both in liquid and solid growth medium against a gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and a gram negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria using disc diffusion assay method. Effect of antibacterial activity was observed by zone of inhibition around the antibiotic discs of ZnO NP. Results: ZnO NP was characterized by the different spectral analysis of the synthesized product. ZnO NPs reveal good antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. Kinetic studies were conducted on growth bacteria by loading ZnO NP to S. aureus and E. coli with this concentration to study the kinetic of growth behavior which showed that NP produced toxicity on both bacteria and therefore the growth was inhibited. Conclusions: The inhibition of growth of the organisms by ZnO nanoparticles suggests that it could potentially be used as an effective antibacterial agent and as well can be used in the protection of agricultural and food safety. Future studies may be aimed at the further evaluation to establish the nanoparticles as potential antimicrobial agent.

Zinc nanoparticles are considered to be very important nanoparticles having effective antibacterial and antifungal properties. Green synthesis of nanoparticles is considered to be more reliable and eco friendly as compared to other mode of synthesis. The main aim of the present study was to synthesize Zn nanoparticles using the aqueous extract of Bambusa tulda leaves and to test their antibacterial and antifungal activity. ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized following standard methods and were characterized by UV/VIS spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The antimicrobial activity was carried out against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria viz. Bacillus cereus (MTCC 1305), Escherichia coli (MTCC 10312), Proteus mirabilis (MTCC-3310) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC-3542) and Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 87), as well as against the fungus Aspergillus niger (MTCC-9652). The synthesized Zn nanoparticles showed significant antimicrobial activity against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria as well as against the fungal strain tested for. Thus from this study it can be concluded that Bambusa tulda leaf extracts can be effectively used for synthesizing Zn nanoparticles which has effective antimicrobial activity. This study also suggests that green synthesized Zn nanoparticles can be used as an alternative to existing antimicrobial agents

ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) can be synthesized by chemical, physical and biological methods; many studies have indicated that biologically synthesized ZnO-NPs have eco-friendly benefits over physically and chemically synthesized ZnO-NPs. This study was carried out to evaluate the differences in characteristics and effects on pathogenic bacteria between ZnO-NPs synthesized by a chemical method and a biological method using the marine green alga Ulva fasciata. Additionally, the synergistic or antagonistic effects of loading ZnO-NPs synthesized by chemical and biological methods on antibiotics are investigated. The results show that there are differences in the characteristics of ZnO-NPs synthesized by the various methods, as determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). ZnO-NPs had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, , Salmonella enterica subsp. salamae (Em.1-EGY015), Aeromonas hydrophila, Escherichia coli O157 (KY797670) and Bacillus cereus SH06; moreover, green-synthesized ZnO-NPs were more effective against pathogenic bacteria than chemically synthesized ZnO-NPs. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ZnO-NPs synthesized by the green method was less than that of ZnO-NPs synthesized by the chemical method. The results demonstrated that the synergistic or antagonistic effects of ZnO-NP loading on antibiotics (ampicillin/sulbactam, tobramycin, flucloxacillin, chloramphenicol, amoxicillin, cephalexin, ofloxacin, and neomycin) varied according to the type of pathogenic bacteria, antibiotic, and method of synthesis of ZnO-NPs.

The present study described the synthesis of biocompatible Zinc oxide nanoparticles from the zinc acetate through eco-friendly green process using leaf extract of Cassia auriculata leaf and their antibacterial activity. The green synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Ultra violet visible spectroscopy, Photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). FTIR studies confirm the presence of bio molecules and metal oxides. The calculated optical band gap values of the material to be around 3.3 eV. PL spectrum study revealed the optical properties of ZnO NPs. The biosynthesized nanoparticle synthesized from leaf extract of Cassia auriculata exhibited strong antibacterial activity Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis. Thus, it may be used in the surface coating of food package to prevent the bacterial contamination.

The rapid miniaturization of portable and wearable electronics has gained increasing demand for flexible and high-performance microscale energy storage devices such as micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) that provide flexibility and portability. Volumetric capacitance is the most significant metric for miniaturized capacitive energy storage units due to the limitations in device volume and active surface area. Herein, we have used an ultrathin (3.5 nm) two-dimensional (2D) Co(OH) 2 nanosheet (NS) as an electrode material to fabricate a flexible, solid-state MSC on micropatterned laser-scribed graphene (LSG). On account of the combination of ultrathin morphology, in-plane geometry of interdigitated microelectrodes, and highly conductive and robust interaction of ultrathin Co(OH) 2 NS and LSG, the Co(OH) 2 NS-LSG-based micro-supercapacitor (CN-LSG MSC) exhibits high rate-capability and delivers a superior volumetric capacitance of 258 F cm −3 at 13 A cm −3 current density. Moreover, the CN-LSG MSC device achieved an excellent energy density of 22 mW h cm −3 at a power density of 6.8 W cm −3 with a remarkable cyclic stability of 96.4% even after 20 000 charge–discharge cycles. The fabricated CN-LSG MSC exhibits unaffected mechanical flexibility under different bending deformations. Additionally, we have demonstrated the possibility of integrating a CN-LSG MSC by connecting it in series and parallel configurations, which amplifies the operating voltage and output current, respectively. Therefore, the present research work opens a new avenue for the simple and scalable manufacture of ultrathin film-based MSCs promising for various lightweight, miniaturized, flexible, and wearable electronics.
