This is because it is defined by the culture and tradition which flows down the generations. When we talk about the vegetables we normally do not include the category of fruits, cereals, nuts, and pulses.Ā  Ā 

The origin of vegetable is still a matter of fascination. The primal man hunted animals and gathered fruits to sustain his hunger needs. But by some miracle a vegetable seed was sown due to the forces of nature. And when the humans noticed it they came to know that they could also cultivate the land for production of fruits and vegetables.

According to the evidences, the cultivation of vegetables started from 1000 BC to 7000 BC. And is when agriculture started developing. As time passed trade grew.

Essay # 1. Introduction to Vegetables:

The noun vegetable usually means an edible plant or part of a plant other than a sweet fruit or seed.

However, the word is not scientific, and its meaning is largely based on culinary and cultural tradition. Therefore, the application of the word is somewhat arbitrary and subjective. For example, some people consider mushrooms to be vegetables, while others consider them a separate food category.

Some vegetables can be consumed raw, and some may (or must) be cooked in various ways, most often in non- sweet (savory or salty) dishes. However, a few vegetables are often used in desserts and other sweet dishes, such as rhubarb pies and carrot cakes.

As an adjective, the word vegetable is used in scientific and technical contexts with a different and much broader meaning, namely of ‘related to plants’ in general, edible or not ā€” as in vegetable matter, vegetable kingdom, vegetable origin, etc. The meaning of ‘vegetable’ as ‘plant grown for food’ was not established until the 18th century.

There are three definitions relating to fruits and vegetables:

i. Fruit (scientific): the ovary of a seed-bearing plant;

ii. Fruit (culinary): any edible part of a plant with a sweet flavour;

iii. Vegetable: any edible part of a plant with a savory flavour.

In everyday, grocery-store, culinary language, the words ‘fruit’ and ‘vegetable’ are mutually exclusive; plant products that are called fruits are hardly ever classified as vegetables, and vice versa. For scientists, the word ‘fruit’ has a precise botanical meaning (a part that developed from the ovary of a flowering plant), which is considerably different from its common meaning, and includes many poisonous fruits.

While peaches, plums, and oranges are ‘fruits’ in both senses, many items commonly called ‘vegetables’ ā€” such as eggplants, bell peppers, and tomatoes ā€” are technically fruits, as are most cereals, as well as some spices like black pepper and chillies. Some plant products, such as corn or peas, may be considered vegetables only while still unripe.

The question of whether the tomato is a fruit or a vegetable found its way into the United States Supreme Court in 1893. The court ruled unanimously in Nix v. Hedden that a tomato is correctly identified as, and thus taxed as, a vegetable, for the purposes of the 1883 Tariff Act on imported produce. The court did acknowledge, however, that, botanically speaking, a tomato is a fruit.

Languages other than English often have categories that can be identified with the common English meanings of ‘fruit’ and ‘vegetable’, but their precise meaning often depends on local culinary traditions. For example, in Brazil the avocado is traditionally consumed with sugar as a dessert or in milk shakes, and hence regarded as a fruit; whereas in other countries (including Mexico and the United States) it is used in salads and dips, and hence considered a vegetable.

The list of food items called ‘vegetable’ is quite long, and includes many different parts of plants.

‘Vegetable’ comes from the Latin vegetabilis (animated) and from vegetare (enliven), which is derived from vegetus (active), in reference to the process of a plant growing. This in turn derives from the Proto-Indo-European base *weg- or *wog-, which is also the source of the English wake, meaning ‘become (or stay) alert’.

The word ‘vegetable’ was first recorded in English in the 15th century, but applied to any plant. This is still the sense of the adjective ‘vegetable’ in science. The related term vegetation also has a similarly broad scope.

Vegetables are eaten in a variety of ways, as part of main meals and as snacks. The nutritional content of vegetables varies considerably, though generally they contain little protein or fat, and varying proportions of vitamins, pro-vitamins, dietary minerals, fiber and carbohydrates. Vegetables contain a great variety of other phytochemicals, some of which have been claimed to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-carcinogenic properties.

However, vegetables often also contain toxins and anti-nutrients such as a-solanine, a-chaconine, enzyme inhibitors (of cholinesterase, protease, amylase, etc.), cyanide and cyanide precursors, oxalic acid, and more. Depending on the concentration, such compounds may reduce the edibility, nutritional value, and health benefits of dietary vegetables. Cooking and/or other processing may be necessary to eliminate or reduce them.

Essay # 3. Colour Pigments Present in Vegetables:

The green colour of leafy vegetables is due to the presence of the green pigment chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is affected by pH and changes to olive green in acid conditions, and bright green in alkaline conditions. Some of the acids are released in steam during cooking, particularly if cooked without a cover.

The yellow/orange colours of fruits and vegetables are due to the presence of carotenoids, which are also affected by normal cooking processes or changes in pH.

The red/blue colouring of some fruits and vegetables (e.g. blackberries and red cabbage) are due to anthocyaninā€™s which are sensitive to changes in pH. When pH is neutral, the pigments are purple, when acidic, red, and when alkaline, blue. These pigments are very water soluble.

For food safety, the CDC recommends proper fruit handling and preparation to reduce the risk of food contamination and foodborne illness. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be carefully selected. At the store, they should not be damaged or bruised and pre-cut pieces should be refrigerated or surrounded by ice.

All fruits and vegetables should be rinsed before eating. This recommendation also applies to produce with rinds or skins that are not eaten. It should be done just before preparing or eating to avoid premature spoilage. Fruits and vegetables should be kept separate from raw foods like meat, poultry, and seafood, as well as any cooking utensils or surfaces that may have come into contact with them (e.g. cutting boards).

Fruits and vegetables, if they are not going to be cooked, should be thrown away if they have touched raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. All cut, peeled, or cooked fruits and vegetables should be refrigerated within 2 hours. After a certain time, harmful bacteria may grow on them and increase the risk of foodborne illness.

Essay # 4. Storage Care for Vegetables :

Proper post-harvest storage aimed at extending and ensuring shelf life is best effected by efficient cold chain application. All vegetables benefit from proper post-harvest care.

Many root and non-root vegetables that grow underground can be stored through winter in a root cellar or other similarly cool, dark and dry place to prevent mold, greening and sprouting. Care should be taken in understanding the properties and vulnerabilities of the particular roots to be stored. These vegetables can last through to early spring and be nearly as nutritious as when fresh.

During storage, leafy vegetables lose moisture, and the vitamin C in them degrades rapidly. They should be stored for as short a time as possible in a cool place, in a container or plastic bag.

Vegetarianism Essay

This is a model  vegetarianism essay .

As I always stress, you should  read the question very carefully  before you answer it to make sure you are writing about the right thing.

Take a look at the question:

Every one of us should become a vegetarian because eating meat can cause serious health problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Staying on topic

If you rush to start writing and don't analyse the question and brainstorm some ideas you may include the wrong information.

There are religious or moral arguments for not eating meat, but if you discuss those you will be going off topic .

This question is specifically about the health problems connected to eating meat.

So you must discuss in your answer what some of these problems are and if you think there are real health risks or not.

Knowing about the topic

As part of your IELTS study it will help if you know the basics of most topics such as some health vocabulary in this case, but you are not expected to be an expert on nutrition.

Remember, you are being judged on your English ability and your ability to construct an argument in a coherent way, not to be an expert in the subject matter. So relax and work with

In this vegetarianism essay, the candidate disagrees with the statement, and is thus arguing that everyone does not need to be a vegetarian.

IELTS Vegetarianism Essay - Sample Answer

Vegetarianism is becoming more and more popular for many people, particularly because of the harm that some people believe meat can cause to the body. However, I strongly believe that it is not necessary for everybody to be a vegetarian.

Vegetarians believe that meat is unhealthy because of the diseases it has been connected with. There has been much research to suggest that red meat is particularly bad, for example, and that consumption should be limited to eating it just a few times a week to avoid such things as cancer. Meats can also be high in saturated fats so they have been linked to health problems such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

However, there are strong arguments for eating meat. The first reason is that as humans we are designed to eat meat, which suggests it is not unhealthy, and we have been eating meat for thousands of years. For example, cavemen made hunting implements so that they could kill animals and eat their meat. Secondly, meat is a rich source of protein which helps to build muscles and bones. Vegetarians often have to take supplements to get all the essential vitamins and minerals. Finally, it may be the case that too much meat is harmful, but we can easily limit the amount we have without having to cut it out of our diet completely.

To sum up, I do not agree that everyone should turn to a vegetarian diet. Although the overconsumption of meat could possibly be unhealthy, a balanced diet of meat and vegetables should result in a healthy body.

You should begin by intoducing the topi c. The introduction in this vegetarianism essay begins by mentioning vegetarians and the possible harm of eating meat .

It then goes on to the thesis statement , which makes it clear what the candidate's opinion is.

The first body paragraph has a topic sentence which makes it clear that the paragraph is going to address the possible health issues of eating meat.

Some reasons and examples are then given to support this.

The second body paragraph then has a topic sentence which makes it clear that the main idea is now about the arguments for eating meat .

The conclusion in this vegetarianism essay then repeats the opinion and gives the candidates final thoughts.

The bar chart illustrates the number of people in the UK eating more than 5 portions of vegetables and fish per day.

The bar chart illustrates statistics concerning individuals in the UK consuming 5 or more portions of vegetables and fish per day from 2011 to 2017. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that percentages for women, children and men all rose over the period and women had the highest numbers throughout. The increase for children, comparatively, was modest.

Women began the period with 20% consuming more than 5 portions of vegetables and fish a day and this figure was stable until 2013 when it began to rise precipitously to eventually reach a high of 36% in 2016, before a fall to 30% to end the period. The numbers for males finished slightly lower at 26%, however their growth was steadier, rising in each year besides 2016 from a starting point of 16% in 2011.

The figures for children were much lower to begin (10%), preceding a relative surge to 14% the next year. Percentages then fluctuated around 14% and finished at a peak of 15% by the end of the period.

The given bar chart illustrates the percentage of people consuming 5 or more portions of vegetables and fish over the course of 7 years starting from 2011.

In general, the trends of people eating more than 5 portions of vegetables and fish always increased in the most of the period. Additionally, women had the highest numbers while children had the lowest numbers throughout the period. Ā Ā Ā 

Women started at exactly 20 percent in 2011 and plateaued until 2013, then rising consistently except for a quite significant drop from just over 35% to 30% during 2016 ā€“ 2017. While both men and women modes were relatively similar, there was some variance, especially during 2015-2017, when the number of men consuming 5 or more portions of vegetables and fish fluctuated slightly around 25%.

Turning to children, the percentage fluctuated over the entire period and it never rose above 15% and did not go under 10%. Ā Ā

Do you like to eat vegetables? Not all people in this world prefer to be vegetarians . They might prefer the delicious non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish, etc., over the vegetables. The fact is, even though some of the seafood and other non-vegetarian dishes are nutritious, they will never be able to compete with the nutritional value of the vegetables. Hello, friends today I have come up with an essay on the vegetable market, in this essay I have shared my personal experience of my visit to a village vegetable market where I almost spent an hour in the vegetable market. So let us start with the essay on the market.

A visit to a vegetable market.

It was Saturday evening and mother decided to go for a vegetable shopping tomorrow from our local vegetable market. Buying vegetables from the market is no new thing for my mother unlike all of the mothers. For buying vegetables from the market she was preparing a rough list of items to be purchased. I was sitting and enjoying the television show, suddenly mom asked me to come with her tomorrow, to the market so that I could get knowledge about how to buy vegetables and I agreed to go with her as tomorrow was Sunday, my school had a holiday and I had nothing to do.

Early morning mom finished the work and took me with her to the vegetable market. I had not even entered the market and it was so noisy outside and the area was very crowded. I could clearly hear vegetable vendors shouting to sell vegetables. To enter the market a gate was built and no vehicles were allowed inside, people can only go on foot for shopping.

As we entered into the market mom told me that the market was divided into two sections for convenience of the people one was the vegetarian and other was the non-vegetarian section. The major part of the market was covered by the vegetarians as it included fruits and all the vegetables. And this section was the most crowded one. Mom told people from all over the village to come here every day, to buy food.

Mom took the list and started the search for the vegetables on the list. There were no banners of what vegetable a shopkeeper was selling, one has to go and check by themselves if the required vegetable is available or not. I knew about the vegetables used daily in our home, but now it was time to learn about green leafy vegetables as each look similar but wasn't the same. Mom told me about each one on our list.

The scene at the market was very interesting, vendors were shouting and telling about the vegetables they had and at the same time they were also convincing people that they had the best and fresh vegetables. Every shopkeeper was working very hard, vegetables were very well arranged with proper utilization of space. Vegetables were brought near markets from trucks in heavy sacks. Then these heavy sacks of vegetables were carried by vendors on their back to the market as there were no vehicles allowed into the marketplace.

I and my mom were getting fresh vegetables as on our list, our bags filled as our list ended. Mom showed me how to choose fresh vegetables and taught me how to bargain for the best price. I almost spend an hour in the market and it was a great experience there, I saw the hard work people have to do for their living.

Finally, we returned back to our home, this visit to the market had made me very tired I needed rest, but mom returned and started her work. And finally, for lunch and dinner, we had fresh and healthy vegetables on our plates.
