Your address

We have made several attempts to initiate the process of establishing an nbn  network connection to your building, however we have been unsuccessful in our engagement with the building’s authorised representative. Consequently, nbn does not currently plan to install a network connection to your building, unless we receive a request from the Owners’ Corporation.

If you currently use existing fixed line phone or internet services there are a number of implications to be aware of:

  • Critical copper services such as emergency lift phones and monitored fire alarm systems may be at risk of disconnection.*
  • Occupiers may not be able to continue to access other critical services connected to the existing Fixed Line networks such as medical alarms and emergency call systems, monitored security alarms and fax machines. ^
  • Existing fixed line services will be disconnected at a future date and occupiers will not be able to make phone calls or access the internet over the Fixed Line network unless the nbn  supplied equipment is installed at the property. The disconnection of existing Fixed Line services will not affect occupier's ability to access phone and internet services over mobile networks.
  • Future requests for an nbn  network connection will result in costs payable by the Owners Corporation and/or owners/occupiers.

However, if your phone and internet services are already provided via another fibre network, they will continue to operate as normal unless your provider advises otherwise.

nbn strongly recommends that you contact your current provider of phone and internet services, or visit www.nbn.com.au/switchoff for more information about whether your services will be impacted by the rollout of the nbn  network. #

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you decide to request an installation in the future.

*Please ask your Owners Corporation to contact the lift and alarm service providers for your building. This will help minimise a break in service when the existing network is switched off. Existing fire and lift services registered with nbn may be exempt from immediate disconnection. Please visit www.nbn.com.au/fireandlift for information on registering these services.

^ nbn is developing a list of networks that nbn reasonably understands will continue to operate after the nbn rollout has been completed based on information provided by alternative network owners/operators. For more information, please visit www.nbn.com.au/switchoff or contact us .

  • Boosting speeds for Fixed Wireless customers

Jason Ashton

5-minute read

Discover how we’re enhancing the reach and speed of nbn ’s Fixed Wireless network to benefit customers across the nation.

Over the last 18 months, we have been deploying the latest cutting-edge technology as part of our rollout of next generation upgrades that will enhance the reach and the speed of the nbn ® Fixed Wireless network .

Boosting nbn Fixed Wireless Plus

In November last year, we also announced plans to significantly boost the speed of the existing Fixed Wireless Plus wholesale plan – our most popular plan – without lifting the wholesale price. This means that we intend to boost the speeds for existing Fixed Wireless services connected to 248,000 homes and businesses to wholesale speeds of up to 100/20 Mbps #^ , which is a significant increase to the peak wholesale speeds offered on Fixed Wireless Plus of up to 75/10 Mbps.

In January of this year, we launched a national pilot to introduce the required network changes that will help deliver these higher speeds for our Fixed Wireless Plus customers. We have now completed all the prerequisite network changes, which means our retail providers can now implement their changes to enable this uplift for their customers, across Australia.

As a part of that trial, we are also implementing an uncommitted overprovisioning boost of up to 50 per cent on both the uplink and the downlink, which means even more speed may be available than the advertised maximums, depending on network conditions and equipment. ^

We are extremely pleased with the progress of the pilot so far. Our extensive network testing data shows that, for the retailers that have implemented these changes, Fixed Wireless Plus customers have seen an uplift to both the average and peak download speeds. For premises that have newer nbn Wireless Network Terminating Devices (WNTD versions 3 and 4) installed, busy period average speed tests have lifted from around 60-70 Mbps up to about 80-90 Mbps, and peak wholesale rate speed tests are now reaching 100 Mbps and above. #^

"We are extremely pleased with the progress of the pilot so far. Our extensive network testing data shows that, for the retailers that have implemented these changes, Fixed Wireless Plus customers have seen an uplift to both the average and peak download speeds."

For those Fixed Wireless Plus users with our older WTND devices (WNTD version 1 and 2), the uplift is much less. We are currently working with retail providers to offer equipment upgrades for customers having either a WNTD version 1 or 2 at their premises (at no cost to the retail provider). Replacing these older WNTDs is not only good for the individual customer, but also provides a community benefit by helping to improve the performance of the network for neighbouring customers.

We are working with retailers to complete these antenna upgrades as soon as possible and encourage customers to look out for information. More details on the different WNTD types, along with some helpful information related to the indoor LED signal strength indicators, are set out below.

If the current pilot is successful, we intend to introduce the changes formally by mid-2024.

Higher speed tiers on the way

The enhancement of our Fixed Wireless Plus wholesale plan is not the only thing we are planning when it comes to delivering faster nbn speeds across the nbn Fixed Wireless network.

By mid-2024, we intend to launch two new high-speed plans that aim to offer even faster nbn speeds. They are Fixed Wireless Home Fast, which will aim to deliver potential peak wholesale speeds of 200-250/8-20 Mbps #^ , and Fixed Wireless Superfast, which will aim to deliver potential peak wholesale speeds of 400/10-40 Mbps #^ across the majority of the enhanced nbn Fixed Wireless network footprint. #^

These new tiers will require the newer WNTD versions to support these higher speeds so we will automatically upgrade our device if it’s necessary to activate the new High Speed Tier product you order from your phone and internet provider.

Again, just like with the boost to Fixed Wireless Plus we are also implementing an uncommitted overprovisioning boost of up to 50 per cent for both these new plans, which means speeds faster than the advertised maximums may be available at times, depending on network conditions and equipment. #^

Progress of overall network upgrade program

The Fixed Wireless Upgrade Program will see all 2,362 nbn Fixed Wireless towers receive a physical upgrade.

We are approaching the halfway point in terms of the physical works being undertaken and we have also completed remote optimisations on most of the remaining towers. To gauge the impact of these works and improvements they are delivering across the network, we have been undertaking extensive network testing.

There is clear evidence, especially once the full upgrades are completed, that we are delivering a step change in the potential network performance. We intend to provide an update on the test data in the coming months.

So, why are we making these changes? The answer is simple: we want to provide Australians with the best possible internet experience on the nbn Fixed Wireless network.

We know that customers are demanding more data, and they are increasingly more reliant on our network for work, education, entertainment and social connection. That's why we are committed to investing in our Fixed Wireless network to help deliver faster and more reliable speeds. #^

Identify what equipment you have

A diamond-shaped antenna, known as an nbn Wireless Network Terminating Device Version 2, on house roof with trees in the background

Wireless Network Terminating Device (WNTD) Version 2

The diamond-shaped antenna, these older devices continue to operate reliably and can deliver the potential maximum speeds on the existing 12/1 Mbps and 25/5 Mbps plans, however they are unable to take full advantage of the uplift we have announced for the Fixed Wireless Plus plan (up to 100/20 Mbps).

They are also unable to support the new high-speed tiers and will be automatically upgraded if a high-speed service is ordered through your phone and internet provider.

Please note:  WNTD Version 1 – there are only around 1,000 active on the nbn Fixed Wireless network. They look similar and are the same shape as a WNTD Version 2.

A rectangular-shaped antenna, known as an nbn Wireless Network Terminating Device Version 3, on a house roof

WNTD Version 3

The rectangular WNTD with sharper edges. This unit was introduced by nbn in 2018 and is the most widely deployed model on the nbn Fixed Wireless network today.

It can reach potential speeds of 250 Mbps downlink and 25 Mbps uplink, and is therefore suitable for all products apart from the fastest planned new high-speed plan – Fixed Wireless Superfast with potential peak speeds of 400/40 Mbps.

This unit will be upgraded automatically if a Fixed Wireless Superfast service is available at your location and that product is ordered through your phone and internet provider.

A rectangular-shaped antenna with rounded edges, known as an nbn Wireless Network Terminating Device Version 4, on a house roof with trees in the background

WNTD Version 4

The rectangular WNTD model with rounded edges. This unit was introduced in late 2023 and is suitable for all existing and planned Fixed Wireless plans.

In fact, it can reach potential peak speeds well beyond our current planned product offering.

This unit will be installed for most new Fixed Wireless connections and, in most instances, where we are upgrading one of the older Version 1 or Version 2 devices.

Example of display names and lights that appear on Fixed Wireless indoor unit

Indoor Unit LEDs

You may be curious to know how to interpret the three LEDs labelled 'Signal Strength' on your indoor unit.

There are three LED combinations (1 red, 2 amber or 3 green LEDs). If you are seeing the single red LED, it means your device has a lower signal to noise (SNR) ratio. This may be due to a weak signal, but might also indicate some sort of interference degrading your signal.

We try to keep SNR high and it may be possible to improve this if your service is not working as you expect. Two amber LEDs means you have good signal level and should be getting good service. Three green LEDs means excellent signal quality, able to support our high speed tier plans.

# These are nbn wholesale speed tiers, which nbn provides to retail phone and internet providers. Attainable wholesale speeds are subject to the rollout of network upgrades and some premises will require nbn to complete upgrades to the equipment at the premises.

^ Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn network, depends on the nbn network technology and configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside our control (like your equipment quality, software, broadband plans, signal reception and how your service provider designs its network). Speeds may be impacted by the number of concurrent users on nbn’s Fixed Wireless network, including during busy periods.

Choosing the best fixed wireless NBN plan

If you're in an area covered by the Fixed Wireless NBN network, it's essential to understand what to consider when selecting the best plan for your needs.

Unlike fixed line NBN, NBN Fixed Wireless connects you to the Internet wirelessly in a fixed location, using similar technologies as your smartphone (including 5G).

Since it doesn't need to cover mobile service, it can offer a more reliable data connection in its designated areas.

What is fixed wireless?

Fixed Wireless NBN is a component of the National Broadband Network that brings Internet access to people in regional and remote areas of Australia.

This system uses transmission towers connected to the broader physical cabled NBN network. The signal is broadcast using radio frequencies similar to those in existing 4G and 5G networks.

fixed wireless nbn

What sets NBN Fixed Wireless apart is its focus on delivering Internet to fixed locations, not mobile devices. To set it up, a fixed wireless antenna is installed, usually on the roof, along with an internal NBN Connection Box.

These components connect to the wireless signal from the nearest transmitter, providing Internet access to your home. It functions similarly to your smartphone on a 4G or 5G network but is optimised for distance and reliable performance within homes and businesses where mobile signals can sometimes be unreliable.

How fast is fixed wireless?

NBN provides fixed wireless across three different speed tiers .

Speed Tier Maximum download speed Maximum Upload Speed
NBN 12 (Basic I) 12Mbps 1Mbps
NBN 25 (Basic II) 25Mbps 5Mbps
NBN 75 (Fixed Wireless Plus) 75Mbps 10Mbps

Is fixed wireless reliable?

Like any wireless connection, reliability can vary, but generally, fixed wireless is quite dependable. Compared to most 4G networks (which is a fair comparison as it uses similar technology), it's notably more reliable.

This is because NBN Co can precisely measure the number of connected premises and tailor the signal to specific locations.

In contrast, mobile devices move around, changing their antenna positions, and encountering obstacles like hills and buildings that can affect performance. Speeds may differ among providers and at specific times, so plans often mention their typical evening speeds, helping you set realistic expectations for a Fixed Wireless NBN plan.

Nevertheless, it's essential to note that a fixed physical line NBN connection typically outperforms wireless connections.

Pros and cons of a fixed wireless connection

As with any plan, there are upsides and downsides to fixed wireless NBN:

Fixed Wireless NBN Pros Fixed Wireless NBN Cons
Doesn’t require cabling to your home Higher speeds of cabled connections unavailable (at least for now)
Fixed towers give better reliability than standard mobile broadband Congestion happens, because it’s shared spectrum
Typically faster than NBN Sky Muster There are faster services such as Starlink
Upgrades to 5G should bring faster speeds and higher reliability in time 5G Fixed Wireless NBN won’t arrive until 2024 (or later) and may not be available from every tower or at every location
Wide variety of plans and prices available Pricing typically a little higher than fixed line NBN plans at the same speeds

Is fixed wireless Internet better than NBN?

For most people, the answer is likely no. While you can get a fixed wireless home broadband connection from private providers, they usually offer plans only in areas where they're sure customers will get a good connection.

This doesn't always align with the NBN Fixed Wireless footprint, which is mainly on the outskirts of larger cities. So, finding a fixed wireless home broadband plan from a non-NBN provider might be challenging.

There's an exception, though, with Starlink, Elon Musk's low earth orbit satellite system. While it's positioned as a competitor to the NBN Sky Muster Satellite system , it's also an option for fixed wireless customers, if Starlink agrees to take you on as a customer.

How to switch fixed wireless plans

If you've already set up a fixed wireless NBN, it's a good idea to review your options at least twice a year. Many broadband plans, including fixed wireless NBN, are on a month-to-month basis, making it easy to switch providers.

To switch, check your contract for any termination or equipment fees. If you just want to change your plan tier with your current provider, they usually have online portals or apps to make the process smooth.

When switching to a new NBN fixed wireless provider, you might be able to use the same modem/router; see if your new provider offers a " Bring Your Own Modem " deal to save money. To learn more about which NBN fixed wireless plans are for you, get connected with the Compare Broadband team today.

Do I need to call for a technician to install a Fixed Wireless connection?

Yes. Both the NBN outdoor antenna and connection box have to be installed by an approved installer, so you need to schedule an appointment with a technician. You may also coordinate with your service provider to make sure that the schedule works for you.

What’s an ideal location for the NBN Fixed Wireless equipment?

A few things you need to remember when choosing a location for your NBN equipment is that it should be cool, dry, and well ventilated. It also needs to be away from busy areas of the premises to prevent getting knocked off its spot but accessible enough so you can easily check the indicator lights. You can pre-identify an area that suits these requirements. However, keep in mind that the technician may recommend a different location depending on various environmental factors or the complexity of installing the required hardware in your chosen area.

Can I access NBN’s network from a local telecommunications tower?

The said tower needs to have an NBN presence for you to access the network. This can be determined by your technician on your scheduled date of installation.

Telstra Fixed Wireless

Since the rollout of the National Broadband Network (nbn®), many internet service providers have begun offering nbn®  internet plans .

However, not every nbn® provider in Australia is the same. We at Skymesh observed how some Australians have been left behind when it comes to internet access, which is why we cater our services to you.

It’s not always easy to find the best internet provider for rural areas. You want a quick, dependable connection for your home and business. You need a provider that will be there when you need them. Skymesh is the leading option for rural Australians who want reliable, fast internet.

If you’ve gotten frustrated with looking up ‘Telstra fixed wireless’ or ‘ internet provider in my area ’, consider our different offers. We provide rural internet connections with speeds, data allowances, and customer service that can’t be matched by other providers.

What is the difference between nbn® and fixed wireless?

Launched in 2009, the National Broadband Network, or nbn®, is a government-funded project that strives to future-proof Australian homes and businesses by upgrading their internet connections. Given the increasing importance of the internet in our daily lives, the Federal Government believed that it was especially important for Australia to invest in a robust and fast broadband network.

The goal is to ensure that every home and business has access to a high-speed and stable internet connection, especially in more remote locations.

Fixed Wireless – whether you are referring to Telstra Fixed Wireless, Skymesh Fixed Wireless, or a one from a different provider – is an nbn® connection type. To connect to the web, nbn® Fixed Wireless makes use of the same 4G networks as your mobile device. Your signal comes from the nearest transmission tower via the nbn® network and is picked up by an antenna on your roof.

There are seven different nbn® connection options, but what’s available ultimately depends on your location. Even if you search ‘Telstra Fixed Wireless’, a different connection option may be available, as it all depends on where you live and the infrastructure in your area. For example, if you live in a remote area farther away from any nbn® Fixed Wireless facility, it is likely that you’ll receive satellite internet through a Sky Muster® plan.

To find out what nbn® plans are available at your location, check the coverage of your address on Skymesh.

Do I need a modem for a fixed wireless connection?

For fixed wireless nbn® services such as Telstra Fixed Wireless, the nbn® connection box, which acts as a modem, is used to enable internet connectivity. It’s wall-mounted and needs power to function.

In addition to the nbn® connection box, fixed wireless connections also use the nbn® outdoor antenna, which is typically installed on the roofs of houses. The antenna enables homes to connect to the nbn® network through a transmission tower that’s as far as fourteen kilometres away.

At Skymesh, your nbn® connection box for both Fixed Wireless and Sky Muster® plans is already included. Aside from that, standard installations of nbn® equipment, including the nbn® connection box and antenna, are all free with us.

Since the nbn® connection box already comes with four data ports, you can use an Ethernet cable to connect your device, such as laptops and desktop computers, directly to the box. For Wi-Fi connectivity, you will need a router.

If you are eligible for Skymesh Fixed Wireless nbn® plans, you can opt for a plug-and-play router, which comes with free shipping. You can also use your own nbn®-compatible router, but you must be comfortable configuring it on your own. We do offer limited support for your own nbn®-compatible router with guides to help you connect the router to the internet service.

Who is the best-fixed wireless provider in Australia?

For those who live in regional, rural, and remote areas, Brisbane’s own Skymesh has expanded to provide its customers with affordable and reliable Fixed Wireless nbn® plans.

Our mission is to provide the best rural internet connection, service speeds, customer experience, and data allowances to Australians outside the range of fibre broadband networks commonly available in urban areas. After more than fifteen years in the industry, we know what it takes to bring high-quality internet connectivity to certain regional locations in the country.

We also offer flexibility to our customers. You can change your plan as often as you want without incurring any change fees. Plus, thanks to our 30-day no lock-in contract, you can even try out our service for a month without locking into a long term contract. If the service is not right for you, you can cancel without any cancellation fees.

If you have any concerns regarding ‘ no phone line internet ’, ‘ satellite internet ’, or ‘ Telstra satellite internet ’, our friendly Brisbane-based customer support is available seven days a week, even on public holidays, to answer any questions you might have. No longer will you need to look elsewhere for Telstra Fixed Wireless plans,  Wi-Fi internet service , or ask ‘ What is home wireless broadband? ’ as we are happy to assist you.

Actual speeds

Data speeds for the Service are variable and are suitable for basic Internet connectivity. The actual speed you will experience at any given time will vary depending on various factors including network (signal, proximity, line of sight or congestion), location (modem placement, distance from the wireless tower, geography, obstructions), weather, hardware and software.

Your speed will typically be less than the limits imposed by the wholesale network. When we have enough reliable data, we will publish typical busy-period speeds.

Speeds may differ from third-party mobile access services on the same network.

Telstra nbn faq.

1. Best NBN plans 2. Fastest NBN plans 3. Cheap NBN plans 4. Best internet deals

Telstra is the largest NBN provider in Australia, offering a high quality service and dependable speeds, plus there are plenty of perks and optional extras on the table as well. With that said, there’s no getting around the fact that Telstra is also the most expensive NBN provider on the market.

We think this is best illustrated by Telstra's NBN 50 plan: it currently costs AU$95 a month, which is AU$20 higher than the average monthly cost of all the NBN 50 plans monitored by TechRadar. In short, other telcos including Optus , TPG and Exetel offer the same speed as Telstra, just at a cheaper price.

While we think Telstra’s NBN 25, NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans are too expensive, we do think there is value to be had with its NBN 250 plan. Telstra’s one of only a few telcos top speeds of 250Mbps in its tier, so it’s better value for money if you’re in a household of five or more people with heavy internet usage.

To help more in your decision-making, we’ve laid out the best Telstra NBN plans below, or you can read our in-depth Telstra NBN review if you want a complete breakdown. If you want to learn more about each Telstra NBN plan, click on the links below to check out the speed you’re after:

Noteworthy Telstra NBN deals

Since wholesale prices were introduced by NBN Co at the end of 2023, Telstra has adjusted the pricing of most of its plans. These changes include increasing the cost of NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans, but decreasing the cost of faster plans, including NBN 100 and NBN 250.

While the changes have had little effect on Telstra's title of most expensive NBN provider, a price reduction should always be welcomed. As such, we consider the plans below to be the highlights of Telstra's current offering.

  • NBN 100 : save AU$15p/m for first 6 months (then AU$110p/m ongoing)
  • NBN 250 : save AU$25p/m for first 6 months (then AU$135p/m ongoing)

The best option for most people

Telstra | NBN 100 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$95p/m (for 6 months, then AU$110 ongoing)

We previously selected Telstra's NBN 50 plan as being the best option for most people, but since the changes to pricing, we now consider the 100Mbps Telstra plan to offer greater overall value.

The six month introductory cost is the same for NBN 100 as it is for the 50Mbps plan, so for the same initial outlay you can double your download speed. Once this introductory period comes to an end, you'll be paying AU$10 more each month than you would on the slower 50Mbps plan.

This ongoing cost does still make Telstra's plan some AU$20 more expensive than the national average (the same can be said for the telco's 50Mbps plan) but if you absolutely must go with the nation's largest provider, this NBN 100 plan is our top pick.

You do get a couple of freebies thrown in, including 2 months of Binge and 4 months of Spotify Premium, but these are only for customers who are new to either service.

Total minimum cost: AU$95 | Total cost for first year: AU$1,230

Telstra NBN 25 plan

The cheapest option, but not great value

TelstraNBN 25Unlimited dataNo lock-in contractAU$85p/m

Telstra | NBN 25 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$85p/m

This is Telstra’s cheapest NBN offering, but it’s hardly the most affordable plan out there – not when the average monthly cost in this tier is AU$68. You’ll get a top typical evening speed of 25Mbps on this plan, but plenty of other providers offer the same at a cheaper price. It does come with nice inclusions such as a modem with 4G backup, though we still struggle to recommend this plan at the price. If you decide to leave within 24 months, just return the modem or pay a AU$200 non-return fee.

Total minimum cost: AU$80 | Total cost for first year: AU$960

Telstra NBN 50 plan

The most popular speed tier

TelstraNBN 50Unlimited dataNo lock-in contractAU$95p/m

Telstra | NBN 50 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$95p/m (first 6 months, then AU$100p/m)

The 50Mbps NBN 50 speed tier continues to be the most popular choice in Australia. However, the NBN Co has now introduced higher wholesale pricing at this speed, which NBN providers are now passing onto customers, Telstra included.

This change has seen the regular monthly cost of Telstra's NBN 50 plan hit AU$100, putting it head and shoulders above all other telcos when it comes to cost. The average cost of an NBN 50 plan in Australia is currently AU$80, so we find it hard to recommend this plan at all. The majority of providers will advertise the maximum 50Mbps download speeds during the busier evening hours, so it doesn't make logical sense to us why you would spend more when you don't have to.

A Telstra plan does come with the added benefit of 4G backup if your fixed line connection happens to suffer an outage, but Optus offers this too, and charges AU$15 less each month.

Total minimum cost: AU$95 | Total cost for first year: AU$1,170 | Yearly cost after discount: AU$1,200

Exceptionally fast broadband for high-demand users

Telstra | NBN 250 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$110p/m (first 6 months, then AU$135p/m)

You can save AU$150 on your first six months with Telstra’s NBN 250 deal. The AU$25 monthly discount will bring your internet bill down to AU$110 a month for your first six months, then AU$135 a month thereafter – which still represents a roughly AU$20 premium over the national average.

This plan has a typical evening speed of 250Mbps, and Telstra is one of only a few providers quoting this maxed-out speed in the tier. You can return your modem or pay a AU$200 no-return fee if you choose to leave within the first months of signing up. Only available to fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) and select hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) connections.

The fastest you can get, but only available in select locations

TelstraNBN 1000Unlimited dataNo lock-in contractAU$170p/m

Telstra | NBN 1000 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$170p/m

Residential NBN doesn’t get any faster than this, and frankly, this kind of plan will be overkill for most people. There isn’t a discount available on this plan, and at AU$170 a month, it’s by far the most expensive NBN 1000 plan in the market – and AU$35 more each month than the national average.

But, Telstra's NBN 1000 plan is the outright fastest, with a typical evening speed of 700Mbps, while its closest competitors ( Optus , Aussie Broadband and Origin ) all reach 600Mbps. If you leave Telstra within 24 months, just return your modem or pay a AU$200 no-return fee. Only available to FTTP and select HFC.

How much does Telstra NBN cost?

At their standard prices, the options you have to choose from in Telstra’s NBN range includes: NBN 25 for AU$80 a month, NBN 50 for AU$95 a month, NBN 100 for AU$110 a month, NBN 250 for AU$140 a month and NBN 1000 for AU$180.

Can I get Telstra NBN?

Yes, but not all NBN connection types will have access to Telstra’s higher speed tiers. To find out what connection type is available at your address, you can simply check your address on Telstra’s website. Doing this will also tell you the maximum speeds available at your location, and you may find that Telstra restricts what NBN plan you can sign up to based on your address.

This is a good thing, because it means you won’t be paying for a service that can’t be delivered to your home. This feature was introduced after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) took Telstra, Optus and TPG to the Federal Court , after it found that each telco had made false statements to customers regarding how fast their NBN plans were capable of reaching.

It’s worth noting that Telstra’s NBN 250 and NBN 1000 options are only available to those with a FTTP or a HFC connection. You can read more about each connection type here .

What perks come with Telstra NBN?

Other than reliability, what kind of perks can you expect with Telstra NBN? Well, all plans come with the Telstra Smart Modem 3, which is enabled with Wi-Fi 6 and 4G backup, so you can connect to the internet through the telco’s mobile network if there’s an NBN outage .

Telstra is also offering a two-month subscription to Binge and a four-month subscription to Spotify Premium. But these services can only be taken advantage of by customers who haven't previously signed up to them. Considering a good proportion of people will have likely signed up to Spotify at some point, this may not be the best freebie out there.

You’ll also earn Telstra Plus points to redeem on a broad range of tech at its Rewards Store. There are also optional entertainment extras you can add-on to your plan, such as Xbox All Access and Foxtel, though they come at an additional cost.

Telstra internet features breakdown

Telstra is a household name for mobile plans and NBN plans in Australia. Typically, Telstra NBN plans come at a premium but they also tend to have inclusions that help justify the comparatively higher price.

  • Telstra offers a near comprehensive range of internet services, covering NBN fixed-line, 5G home wireless, mobile broadband and even older technologies like ADSL2+ and cable .
  • All Telstra home internet plans come with a modem-router that’s compatible across internet technologies and includes 4G backup .
  • Telstra home internet plans include a home phone service with unlimited calls to local, national and Australian numbers.
  • Telstra NBN plans are among the fastest in Australia.
  • Telstra is one of 11 NBN providers that’s tracked by the ACCC quarterly in terms of download speed, upload speed latency and other performance metrics.

Telstra internet services are available to most Australians and geared towards those in metropolitan areas. Most Australians can sign up for either a Telstra NBN fixed-line or mobile broadband plan. Additionally, Telstra also offers 5G home wireless internet , cable and even older ADSL2+ to eligible homes.

If you live in a metropolitan area, there’s a good chance you can sign up for an NBN fixed-line plan with Telstra. This includes homes connected to the NBN via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) , Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) , Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC) , Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) or Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) technologies. Below is a list of the Telstra NBN fixed-line plans and the technologies that can access them:

  • NBN 25/5 : FTTP, HFC, FTTC, FTTB, FTTN
  • NBN 50/20 : FTTP, HFC, FTTC, FTTB, FTTN
  • NBN 100/20 : FTTP, HFC, FTTC, FTTB (selected), FTTN (selected)
  • NBN 250/25 : FTTP, HFC

Telstra also offers business NBN plans , including NBN 50/20 and NBN 100/20 options. Note that Telstra documentation also lists OptiComm fibre as a potential connection for eligible FTTP premises.

If you live in an eligible area, you may have access to Telstra 5G home internet. There’s only one plan available for eligible homes. See the link for a side-to-side comparison of Telstra 5G home internet plan vs Telstra NBN plans .

Telstra offers a range of data-limited mobile broadband plans in prepaid and monthly forms. Note that both prepaid and monthly mobile broadband plans are paid upfront. Prices vary based on the plan type (4G or 5G network) and the amount of data. Note that you’ll need a compatible SIM device (e.g. tablet, modem dongle or laptop) if you don’t purchase a Telstra mobile broadband plan with a modem.

A shrinking number of eligible homes can potentially sign up to a Telstra cable or ADSL2+ internet plan. Like Telstra NBN plans, cable and ADSL2+ plans come with a compatible modem-router as well as a home phone with unlimited calls to Australian numbers.

Telstra plans are typically feature-rich. While 5G home internet and mobile broadband plans are data-limited, all other Telstra internet plans have unlimited data. Telstra internet plans also typically don’t have a connection fee or a lock-in contract.

The main inclusion is a preconfigured modem-router for Telstra NBN, cable and ADSL2+ plans. Additionally, Telstra 5G home internet and mobile broadband customers on a monthly plan also get a preconfigured modem-router. Express postage is typically free for the modem-router.

Telstra NBN, cable and ADSL2+ customers have access to a home phone line, which includes unlimited standard calls to the following:

  • Australian local numbers
  • Australian national numbers
  • Australian mobile numbers
  • 30 minutes of standard calls to any country
  • Calls to 13-numbers
  • Calls to directory assistance

In terms of typical evening speeds (between 7:00pm and 11:00pm nightly), here’s what you can expect from Telstra NBN plans:

  • NBN 25/5: 25Mbps download, 4Mbps upload
  • NBN 50/20: 50Mbps download, 17Mbps upload
  • NBN 100/20: 100Mbps download, 17Mbps upload
  • NBN 250/25: 250Mbps download, 22Mbps upload

Those speeds may change depending on the NBN technology, particularly for FTTC, FTTB and FTTN homes for relevant plans. At the time of writing, the ACCC NBN data showed fast download and upload speeds for Telstra, plus fast webpage loading times (under three seconds) and low latency (under 13ms).

Telstra 5G home internet users can expect typical evening speeds of 336Mbps download and 44Mbps upload. Note that outside evening hours, speeds are between 50–600Mbps download and 10–90Mbps upload for Telstra 5G home internet.

ADSL2+ and cable speeds aren’t advertised but can reach a max of 24Mbps download and 1.3Mbps upload (ADSL2+), or 100Mbps download and 2Mbps upload (cable). Similarly, download and upload speeds aren’t advertised for Telstra mobile broadband plans but, depending on the price and type, they may include uncapped Telstra 5G speeds .

Despite having a data cap, monthly Telstra 5G home internet and mobile broadband plans don’t have excess data charges. Eligible Telstra mobile broadband plans are capped at 1.5Mbps speeds after the data allocation is exhausted. Telstra 5G home internet plans are capped at 25Mbps download speeds if you exceed the data limit.

Telstra isn’t a stranger to offering deals for its internet plans. Any current Telstra promotion on its internet plans will be listed below.

Telstra perks start with discounts for bundled internet and mobile plans. Outside of the included modem-router and home phone line for eligible plans, Telstra internet plans also included network-level cyber security. Additionally, Telstra users can access Internet Optimiser on eligible internet plans. This feature lets you track online activities, prioritise internet bandwidth, pause internet activity or even block devices, and reduce latency for gaming devices.

Telstra Plus is a consistent perk for customers who sign up to the program. Earn and redeem points as part of the Telstra Plus loyalty program, plus get access to discounted tickets and event pre-sales. Telstra also has a trend of offering shorter-term perks, including promotional pricing as well as subscriptions to popular services like Binge and Spotify . New customers can also take advantage of a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

If you want premium inclusions, Telstra sells Fetch TV set-top boxes and channel packs, special offers for popular streaming services and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Telstra mobile broadband plans are compatible with international data-roaming packs.

Outside of prepaid mobile broadband plans, all Telstra mobile internet plans come with a compatible modem-router. For NBN, ADSL2+ and cable internet, it’s the Telstra Smart Modem 3, which is a dual-band WiFi 6 modem-router. The Telstra Smart Modem 3 offers wireless speeds up to 4800Mbps, has 4G backup (up to 25Mbps download and 5Mbps upload), plus one USB 2.0 port and four gigabit Ethernet ports.

Note that the Telstra Smart Modem is typically included with eligible plans for $0 but you have to return the device if you cancel your plan within 24 months (or pay a hardware fee).

Telstra 5G home internet comes with the Telstra 5G Internet Modem 2. This modem-router is a dual-band WiFi 6, which is compatible with the Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Booster for larger homes or those prone to wireless interference. Telstra mobile broadband plans have the most options and can be bought outright or paid off over 12, 24 or 36 months. Here are the Telstra mobile broadband modem options:

  • Telstra 4GX USB Modem (monthly and prepaid)
  • Telstra 4GX Hotspot (monthly and prepaid)
  • Telstra 4GX Wi-Fi Plus (prepaid)
  • Telstra 5G Wi-Fi Pro (monthly)
  • Netgear Nighthawk M6 5G (monthly)
  • Netgear Nighthawk M6 Pro 5G (monthly)
  • Inseego MiFi X Pro 5G (monthly)

Telstra NBN, ADSL2+ and cable plans are available to eligible homes in metropolitan areas. Enter your address on the Telstra home internet page to see which types of Telstra internet are available at your address. Telstra mobile broadband and 5G home internet plans are offered on the Telstra mobile network, which is available to 99.5% of the population across 3G, 4G and 5G technologies. For an idea of Telstra mobile broadband coverage, check out the interactive map below. Keep in mind that the Telstra 3G network will be shut down in June 2024.

It’s a straightforward process to switch to a Telstra internet plan. Here are the steps to follow for a Telstra NBN, ADSL2+ or cable plan:

  • Select the Telstra plan that’s best for your home internet needs and click the orange ‘Go to Site’ button.
  • On the Telstra website, input your address to see tailored internet options. Confirm your plan by clicking on the relevant blue ‘Choose plan’ button.
  • Choose the relevant priority-assistance option, then ‘Proceed to checkout’.
  • Register for a Telstra ID (or sign in with an existing one), then follow the prompts to complete your plan order.

You may be asked to verify your identity, income and/or employment details during sign-up. It’s an almost identical sign-up process for a Telstra 5G home internet plan or mobile broadband plan, except they don’t have the priority-assistance prompt.

Tangerine Telecom launches new NBN fixed wireless plans

  • Comments: DISQUS_COMMENTS

Tangerine Telecom launches new NBN fixed wireless plans

Australian telco Tangerine Telecom launched new high-speed fixed wireless NBN plans to key cities and towns across regional Australia this week.

The launch comes as the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) reported 5 1,854 phone and internet complaints plaguing remote areas , calling for a new regulatory framework.

Tangerine said in a statement it is bringing fixed wireless plans to regions “in recognition that Internet is indispensable in the household budget for regional families.”

It argued that “internet is a must have for accessing education, health services, running a home business and overcoming distance.”

“Our team at Tangerine is thrilled to be among the first to bring high speed NBN fixed wireless plans to regional areas,” says Tangerine Telecom CEO Andrew Branson.

“With some of our staff working 100% remotely from beautiful locations such as Mudgee, Ulladulla, and Robe, we truly understand the importance of affordable connectivity that fits within the budget.”

Branson claims the telco is “smaller, simpler, and easier to deal with than other telcos.”

Built on this philosophy, this is how Branson established the company in 2014.

Telstra taunts NBN with 5G fixed wireless plan

Telstra chief executive Andy Penn hinted at plans to launch a 5G fixed wireless home broadband product to compete with the NBN, just hours after the company announced it would no longer offer high-speed NBN plans to most households.

Despite signing a non-compete agreement with NBN Co, Mr Penn said nothing stopped Telstra from offering a fixed wireless alternative to the NBN, and that the company was "very across fixed wireless".

Telstra has categorically distanced its 5G fixed wireless service from being an NBN "replacement", positioning it instead as an "alternative" for certain users in the NBN fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) and fixed wireless footprints.

Telstra distances 5G fixed wireless from being an NBN 'replacement'

The timing of the commentary coincides with calls by NBN Co aimed at the government to reconsider whether the broadband tax should apply to cellular fixed wireless services, as some are marketed as NBN-equivalent alternatives.

NBN Co has spent much of the year positioning commercial 5G as a competitive offering , something that could draw government and regulatory scrutiny if that position became broadly accepted.

So far, the government and regulators have resisted, arguing that 5G fixed wireless services cannot compete with regular fixed services when it comes to quotas, even if the speeds are similar or better.

Telstra’s group executive for networks and IT Nikos Katinakis made it clear that Telstra did not want to position its 5G fixed wireless service as a “replacement” for NBN.

“Let me answer a question that I know you have: Is 5G fixed wireless a replacement for NBN? The answer to that is no,” Katinakis told an investor day.

“The average consumption of a fixed customer is now in the 300GB range a month, mostly between 8pm and 10pm. The average wireless customer is in the 15-18GB per month range, and it is spread almost across a 14 hour window with two peaks - 8-9am, and 4-6pm.

“Putting 25 times more demand onto the [5G] network is just not feasible at this point, but it is definitely feasible to offer a fixed wireless access service to the subset of our customers that just don’t get a good enough fixed broadband service.”

Katinakis offered a description of the NBN customers that might benefit from switching to 5G fixed wireless, and therefore would be in Telstra’s target market.

“Either they’re stuck using copper or they’re in a super long loop of coax cable ending up with 12-25-50Mbps,” he said.

“For those customers there is an alternative, and we have started offering that alternative.”

Telstra CEO Andrew Penn offered some additional commentary on target user bases.

“There are certain customers for whatever reason they may be using a copper lead-in on a FTTN or they may be in 4G fixed wireless on an NBN service where a 5G fixed wireless solution could actually offer them a better experience for a similar price,” Penn said.

“That’s basically the focus that we have.”

Penn said that 5G fixed wireless is “not suitable necessarily in every situation”.

Product and technology group executive Kim Krogh Andersen said Telstra estimated that “10 to 15 percent of the broadband market can benefit from fixed wireless access.”

“We have never seen it as something to compete with NBN,” he said.

5G fixed wireless services are viewed in some parts of the market as a place to shift NBN customers, with the promise of better margins for the telco by having those customers on-net instead of on resold NBN infrastructure, where margins have historically been tight to negligible.

TPG Telecom, for example, estimated earlier this year that it could save around $50 million a year for every 100,000 customers it could entice off the NBN and onto its own network infrastructure.

“Of course the margin is different when you move to our own infrastructure versus being a reseller of NBN, [but] we are not approaching it from that point of view,” Andersen said of Telstra’s own 5G fixed wireless.

“[We want] to ensure the customer has the best possible and most suitable technology to enable their connected home experience.”

Andersen added: “The 5G home broadband is a good experience, but NBN is also a good experience.

“We just always ensure that we pick the right technology for our customers.

“That is our guiding principle … and priority.”

Telstra expanded the availability of its 5G fixed wireless services earlier this month, though noted that a limited number of services would be allowed to run in each postcode to maintain service quality.

You might be familiar with Dodo from the days of ADSL, but its NBN plans aren't too shabby either.

Dodo's prices put it in line with average NBN prices on Finder , and you can save a further $10 a month when you bundle your internet plan with a Dodo Energy plan.

Dodo NBN may be right for you if

  • You'd like an affordable NBN plan with decent sign-up discounts for new customers.
  • You're interested in bundling internet and energy with one provider.

While Dodo NBN has a lot going for it, consider

  • Its NBN 250 plans do not offer maximum typical evening speeds. You could find a better speed and price combo elsewhere.

Value for money

Dodo's plans are in line with the average NBN plan on Finder thanks to its sign-up discounts on almost all plans.

Dodo offers a BYO modem option , so you don't have to fork out for an additional modem if you already have one.

Otherwise, you can grab one from Dodo for $79, which is cheaper than the average modem cost on Finder.

Performance

In June 2024, Dodo shared fourth (out of 12 providers) with iPrimus, in the ACCC Broadband Performance Report for download speeds during busy hours of the day (7pm–11pm). It delivered maximum speeds 101.1% of the time.

  • Why this matters: The ACCC Report allows customers to see which NBN providers are delivering the speeds they've advertised, as a measure of reliability.

This was Dodo's equal highest placing since having last ranked fifth in the December 2021 report.

Customer service

Dodo has several ways for you to get in touch with its customer support team, but only on weekdays. There are no weekend customer support options.

  • Reach out via live chat on its website or sling the customer support team an email
  • Log in to your account and submit a support request
  • Visit Dodo's support page for frequently asked questions

When trying to get dodo plan nbn50 when I go to web site it’s a different price. can you tell me why.

Avatar

The price listed on Finder is a Finder Exclusive price, so to access it you need to click the green “Go to site” button. The offer is valid until 27 February 2024.

I hope that helps.

You show the Dodo Unlimited 50/20 Mbps for $79.90 per month. There is an extra charge of $10 a month to cover all calls. Full set up costs are $232.90.

The iSelect salesman is offering me the same plan with all calls covered for $79.95. He has not mentioned any set up costs.

Can he provide me with this service at this price? Should I be careful about the no mention of set up costs?

Avatar

Thanks for your enquiry. Unless iSelect has a unique deal with Dodo, it should only be able to offer you the regular Dodo service priced as you cited: $79.90 for 50Mbps, with $10 a month extra for unlimited calls.

As for the setup costs, it’s possible the iSelect offer was for a 24-month contract which waives the setup fee. The minimum cost you mentioned is correct for the month-to-month contract.

I hope this helps, but please feel free to ask any more questions you have!

Pls l need connections for a internet at home pls help me thanks

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How to switch to a Telstra nbn plan: a simple guide

telstra nbn fixed wireless business plans

In this article

  • When you switch to a Telstra nbn plan your service remains connected without any downtime.
  • Before choosing a Telstra’s nbn plan, check whether cancelling your existing plan will incur any fees or charges from your old provider.
  • Once you choose a Telstra plan, the rest is easy. Telstra will provide everything you need from equipment to an installer if required.

No matter which provider you're with, it's always worth taking a look at what other plans are out on the market. You may find that you can get better coverage, or take advantage of a deal by switching providers. Some of the reasons why you may be considering making a change could include:

Service quality:  If you're experiencing outages or service quality issues, switching providers may offer better coverage.

Promotions or deals:  Taking advantage of a promotion or offer at another provider can help reduce monthly expenses.

Speed and data needs:  If your usage has changed, or you're not achieving the speeds you expect, reviewing your speed plan could be a good option.

Moving home:  Moving home may mean you need to switch providers to get coverage at your new address.

Assess your current contract

Before considering a switch, check your current contract with your existing provider. If you’re still within the contract period, there might be fees for early termination1. If you received a modem at no cost, it might be conditional on staying with the provider for a specific period.

You may also want to look at what is and isn't working with your current service. Running a speed test at different times of day and writing down the results will help you monitor whether your current plan is delivering to expectation.

How to make the switch

So you've decided that the time is right to make the switch. What comes next? The process is relatively easy, and you'll be pleased to know if you switch to a Telstra plan you won't experience an interruption to your service in the process.

Just follow these simple steps.

1. Check your address

The plans available to you will depend on what nbn technology is available at your address. Enter your address to find out what technology type you have, and what plans are available.

Check your address

2. Choose a Telstra nbn plan

When choosing the right speed plan it's good to consider how many people are using your internet simultaneously, and what type of activity you like to use your internet for.

Telstra offers four main NBN plan tiers, each catering to different situations:

  • Basic nbn®:  Suitable for small households of 1-3 people. It offers 25Mbps typical download speeds between 7pm-11pm.
  • Essential nbn®:  Ideal for households of 4-7 people. It provides 50Mbps typical download speeds between 7pm-11pm.
  • Premium nbn®:  Supports 6 or more people. It delivers 100Mbps typical download speeds between 7pm-11pm.
  • Ultimate nbn®:  Supports 6-9 people using high-demand connected devices. It offers 250Mbps typical download speeds between 7pm-11pm.

3. Place your order

The next step is to go ahead and place your order. You can do this directly on the Telstra website by adding the plan to your cart. You'll need to sign in or register with us to complete this step. Otherwise feel free to reach out to Customer service or go into a Telstra store if you prefer this option. Once you place your order, Telstra will take care of the rest. You’ll receive everything you need, including a Telstra Smart Modem for new customers. If you need a technician, Telstra will let you know.

Tip: Don’t cancel your existing plan

Some people think you need to cancel your current plans first before signing up for a new one but that’s not true. This will just leave you without internet for longer than necessary. Keep your current setup until you have locked down your new plan, provider and equipment and you are ready to make the switch.

Switching without the stress

No disruption to your connection.

Your existing NBN service can stay connected until your new Telstra service is ready to commence1. When it’s ready, Telstra will notify your existing provider and arrange for the existing service to be cancelled.

Satisfaction guarantee

If you’re not happy within 30 days and Telstra can’t fix it, you can cancel and Telstra will refund you.

Switching to Telstra NBN is easy. With no lock-in contract, you can change your plan up to once a month at no cost.
