All parrots have the ability to copy sounds, but they don't all have the desire. There is no training strategy that will guarantee a parrot will talk. (Don’t get lured by flashy sales pitches or gimmicks) However there are some strategies you can use to increase the chances of getting your bird to talk. In the DVD Train Your Parrot to Talk you will learn about these strategies. The DVD addresses common myths about talking parrots, which birds make ideal candidates for talking,  the most effective ways to expose your parrot to sounds you want repeated, proven methods for encouraging your parrot to vocalize and most importantly how to train your parrot to talk on cue. Also included is an appearance by Einstein, the Talking Texan Parrot, plus an interview with her human companions. Bonus CD ROM includes recordings of a variety of species of parrots vocalizing to inspire your bird to talk."

Companion Parrots Re-homed is an institution of higher education for pet-bird owners located within Parrot University. At Companion Parrots Re-homed people learn how to ensure a good quality of life for their avian companions. No doubt, parrot ownership can be a challenge — but we are here to help. Far too often, pet bird owners feel that their only option is to relinquish their bird when problems occur. However, an educated  pet-bird owner is more likely to share a long-term relationship with their bird. We invite you to enroll in any or all of our courses. Although courses are free, donations are always welcome and go directly toward the care of the birds in our program. Most courses run approximately 2 hours and are held at various times throughout the month.

Parrot Care Classes

Note: Parrot 101 and Avian Health & Wellness are required for all adoptions. Additional courses may be necessary for specific birds in our care.

This course focuses on the basics of pet-bird ownership from health and nutrition to outfitting the cage to sexual behaviors and alleviators.

Avian Health & Wellness

In this course students learn about their parrot’s health and signs to look for that indicate illness. Learn what makes an Avian vet different, house hold hazards and zoonotic diseases.

Introduction to Avian Behavior

Does your bird exhibit a behavior you would like to change? Would you like to train your bird to do tricks? If so, this course is for you! This intro to Applied Behavior Analysis covers the basic terms and concepts necessary to understand and apply this training method. A short demonstration follows the course.

Fun With Food Workshop

This course is designed to teach food flock psychology and the basics of feeding a diet that promotes good health and prevents illness and disease. The class includes tips, tricks and recipes, and you’ll watch as our birdie chef prepares a recipe that your bird is sure to enjoy. There is a $10 fee for supplies. You leave with a quart sized bag of chop.

Toy Makers Workshop

Learn how easy it is to supplement the toys you purchase at Parrot University with those you make yourself. Enrich your birds life by learning to make toys that stimulate his/her curiosity and eliminate boredom.

Tools for Parrot Problem Solving

Does your parrot (or anything else that lives with you) have behaviors that drive you batty? This class addresses the function of undesired behaviors, and looks at ways to replace them with something you can live with. We will be using the science behind behavior taught in Introduction to Avian Behavior.

Parrot Problem Solving 101

Fruit for your bird.

Fruit is an important source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and phytochemicals which are absolutely essential for optimal health. Fruits are a good source of energy and are rich in enzymes that makes digestion fast and easy, releasing energy into the body.

Just remember that all that energy needs to be burned up somehow so fruit should be fed but sparingly. Too much fruit may create an 'excited' bird so when you feed fruits, pay attention to how your bird behaves. If she is hyper, then simply reduce the amount.

Fruit also supplies a good deal of fluid so be prepared for watery droppings. The first time I fed our Eclectus a grape it was like a river, and yes, I freaked out.

When you feed fruit, make it FRESH if possible. Freeze Dried or Frozen is second if there's no other option but please don't feed dried fruit. Why? Two reasons ... first, dried fruit is smaller in size so many people think they can feed MORE of it, but it is much more concentrated from a sugar perspective so more is NOT better. Second, dried fruit usually contains sulfites which you do not want to give your bird.

Here is a list of SOME of the fruits your birds will enjoy ...

look up the nutritional values and select fruits with the better sources of vitamins and minerals.

Apple (tart is best)

Blackcurrant

Cranberry

Clementines

Date (only in very small quantities - high sugar)

Grapes (red or green, seeded or unseeded)

Gooseberry

Greengage (European plum)

Hawthorn berry

Rowan berry

Sea-buckthorn

Service berries (Juneberry, saskatoon, from Amelanchier species of trees)

  10. Light it Up!

Light It Up! by Diana Uyen (Parrot Problem Solving 101) All birds need full spectrum lighting (unfiltered sunlight) for good health. Captive birds have limited access to this necessary lighting when they live an indoor life. A sunny room is not good enough because glass windows can filter up to 90% of the UVB rays that a bird needs.
