My grandmother lived in a rural area a little over an hour’s drive from my home. We’d go visit her every couple of months, and the late-night drive back home took us down many quiet country roads.

It was rare to see any other cars until we approached the city again, and I don’t think I ever saw a police car during any of our trips.

One night, I asked my father why he always braked and waited at stop lights when we were in the middle of nowhere.

Surrounded by cornfields as we were, it’s not like anyone would ever know if he just gunned it right through the little intersections.

His response was: “integrity means doing the right thing, even when nobody’s watching”.

I’ve thought about that experience many times over the years, and recognized the quiet, but vital truth in those words.

Take a moment to think about a time when someone you trusted betrayed you.

It might have been a situation where you caught someone in a lie , or you discovered that someone stole from you.

Perhaps you found an employee stealing money, or that one of your friends lied to you about something important.

Even if it was to spare your feelings so you didn’t get hurt, it was still a betrayal, wasn’t it?

Integrity demands honesty and “right” behavior, even (especially) when it’s difficult to do so.

It might mean walking away from a job offer when you’re desperate for employment because you know that the company’s practices are illegal or unethical.

People recognize those who live by high moral standards, and know that they can place their trust in them.

If you’re known for keeping promises and commitments, and doing the right thing in every area of your life, you’ll develop a reputation as an authentically good, trustworthy person.

You may not be liked at times, but you’ll be respected. In many situations, that’s actually preferable.

It’s Vital For Any Leadership Role

Who would you have more faith in? A charismatic leader who charms the pants off everyone, but doesn’t keep their word, or one who admits to their flaws, but keeps their promises?

I would always choose the latter, and I’m guessing you would as well.

Those who own up to their issues, but work hard to attain their goals – and to keep people’s trust in them – are far more valuable than those who break their word time and time again.

A boss who’s honest about cash flow problems in the company will keep employees’ loyalty, unlike one who insists all is well, only to hand out paychecks that bounce.

A leader who stands by their principles and exudes honesty is one who will lead their troops to victory. This is as relevant in the boardroom as it is on the battlefield.

Those who keep their word are worth their weight in gold, and it’s understandable why they develop such devoted followers.

In contrast, a person who “bends the truth” to their employees or followers, or fails to keep promises that are difficult to attain, will lose people’s trust very quickly.

A person is only as good as their word, and if they throw around the words “I promise” when it’s convenient, but fail to make good on those vows, how could anyone have faith in them?

If they broke their word about one thing, you can rest assured they’ll break it again in future.

If they lied about this, then what else have they lied about?

Remember that a person’s actions prove who they are. Getting caught in a single act of betrayal can unravel a person’s empire because suddenly everything they’ve ever said or done is taken into question.

Truth Always Comes To Light

Even if you don’t really care whether others consider you to be trustworthy or not, there’s a self-serving aspect to cultivating integrity that you may want to keep in mind:

You will be found out eventually.

Recently, in my role as an editor, I had to fire an employee for plagiarism. The quality of this person’s work had lessened significantly over the past couple of months, and on a whim, I decided to run one of their submitted pieces through a comparison app.

It turned out that they had lifted entire paragraphs from Wikipedia, only changing one or two words to synonyms.

Other phrases and sentences had been cut and pasted verbatim from other sites, and cobbled together into a Frankenstein’s Monster that made no cohesive sense.

When confronted, the employee first lied about the situation, then made excuses, and then begged and pleaded for another chance. They claimed that this was the first time they’d ever done it, and they’d just gotten “sloppy.”

There was no part of me that believed that this was their first time plagiarizing. This was merely the first time I had caught them .

Knowing that this person had no qualms about stealing other people’s work and passing it off as their own, there was no way I could continue to permit them to write for my employer.

Even if they were incredibly diligent and sincerely created original work from that day forward, none of us could trust them again.

To have integrity means that you never have to look over your shoulder, worrying when your lies will catch up with you.

If and when you screw something up, you own it and take responsibility for it. No excuses. Explanations, perhaps, but no whining or pleading: merely honesty and self-respect.

Everyone screws up on occasion, but there’s a massive difference between an honest mistake, and intentional deceit. One is human error, the other will render you eternally untrustworthy in the eyes of everyone around you.

You’re better than that.

Who Do You Want To Be?

Do you know the difference between reputation and character?

The reputation you cultivate is entirely dependent on who other people think you are. Your character is who you are at the core, regardless of whether you’re being observed or not.

So what means more to you?

Being an authentically trustworthy person by sticking to your principles? Or pushing boundaries to see what you can get away with before you get caught?

When you listen to your heart and your conscience, and allow them to guide your words and actions, you know that you’re living in a manner that’s true to yourself.

You don’t ever have to be ashamed of your actions, nor worry that some dark secrets – those skeletons in your closet – might one day be discovered.

You can look yourself in the mirror and be proud of what you see there, instead of looking away out of shame and self-reproach.

Sure, those who lie, cheat, and steal seem to come out ahead at times, but those successes are often short-lived.

Those people tend to be surrounded by sycophants and yes-men, rather than devoted friends who’d do anything for them.

In contrast, those who live their lives with integrity may not always be wealthy, but they’ll have earned respect, loyalty, trust, and love.

How to demonstrate integrity in the workplace  

Whether you're working in a small business or a large corporation, the way you exhibit your integrity can impact the entire workplace. Here are some steps you can take to demonstrate integrity in the workplace and help develop a positive company culture:

Acknowledge your colleagues

If you see someone working hard, you should acknowledge their effort. This can boost their morale and make them feel seen. You can also provide constructive feedback to help them improve in certain areas. This will also encourage other team members to do the same. 

Take responsibility for your actions

It's not often that you see someone owing up to their mistakes. You should take responsibility for your actions, as this shows that you have integrity. The hard part is admitting that you did something wrong. Being accountable shows the employer that you own up instead of making excuses or blaming others for a mistake. 

Communicate openly and honestly

Communication  is the key to success in any workplace. Employees who communicate honestly and employers who are transparent with their team often make up a positive work culture. Everyone benefits equally from employees who communicate openly with each other.

Respect the moral and ethical code

When you enter your workplace, it's crucial that you follow the code set by the company. Listen carefully to what your seniors or supervisors have to say, as they're much more experienced. Also, make sure not to mix up your personal and professional life. This makes you more productive and efficient. 

Be a positive team player

If you're in a mid-level or senior position, learn to delegate tasks and resources optimally. Work along with your team to make the project a success. If you're at a junior level, practise active listening and follow your seniors' guidance at every step of the project. Be ready to put in the effort required to finish your tasks on or before time.

Protecting confidentiality

If someone trusts you with their personal information, keep it to yourself instead of spreading it around. Inform your supervisors if you come across confidential information, such as documents or data. This shows your colleagues and employers that you have integrity.

For example, your supervisor leaves their performance reviews on their desk, and you happen to look at them as you're searching for another document they asked for. Rather than sharing this confidential information with your colleagues and discussing its contents, you should keep the information to yourself. You may also alert them so they can file it in their desk or cabinet. 

Taking responsibility

One of the hardest things to do is owning up to your mistakes and taking responsibility for your actions. Owning up to your mistakes can improve how others perceive you. Your colleagues are likely to appreciate your honesty and transparency.

Let's look at an example of this situation. Let's say your senior assigns you the task of handling sensitive data. Say, while you're working on it, you end up writing code that accidentally deletes some critical records. Rather than make excuses for the same, take responsibility and assure them that you'll be extra careful the next time. 

Acknowledging coworkers

In a busy workplace, it may be hard for employers to track every employee and acknowledge their efforts during the day. If you see someone working hard but not receiving appreciation, help them feel seen and heard. This is especially important when you're at a senior level. 

Let's say you're having a busy week at work where everyone has specific tasks and deadlines to meet. You notice that the interns are putting in additional effort to complete the tasks, so you let them know that they're doing a really good job. This keeps them motivated throughout the day and encourages them to work towards completing their tasks on time. 

Facing challenges

You're bound to face obstacles and challenges in some way at your workplace. Face these challenges headfirst to set a good example and show that you have integrity in the workplace. This can improve your image in front of your coworkers as well.

For example, you're leading a development project client. The client has strict timelines, and you have a resource crunch. The challenge now is to complete all the tasks on time without compromising on quality. You can show integrity in this instance by communicating the project's challenges to the client and explaining why a specific component might take additional time to develop. You can also mention that you'd provide daily updates on the task at hand so they know the progress.

Let's look at some examples of poor workplace integrity better to understand how to avoid presenting your values in a bad light:

Blaming team members

Blaming your teammates for a mistake you committed is always seen poorly. Blame can also foster a hostile work culture for the entire team. Let's say the previous example where the team lead had assigned you the task of handling client data. However, you made a mistake in the code and that resulted in data loss. Instead of taking responsibility, you blame another team member for their part of the code. This not only results in a loss of trust but also sets a bad precedent for the team. 

Damaging company property

If you damage company property, others may perceive you as someone without respect for the workplace. You may even lose your job or face a suspension without pay. For example, your manager told you to use the company computer only for work-related tasks. However, you decide to install third-party software to carry out your personal tasks. This ends up corrupting your system, and you lose sensitive information related to an important project. 

Rather than using company equipment for personal use, you can ask your supervisor for some time to attend to your personal tasks and then make up for that by working additional hours the next day to complete your assigned tasks. 

Participating in unethical practices

Safety protocols exist for a reason, and ignoring them can have serious consequences. For example, you work on a production line that works around heavy machinery. Safety practices state to never reach past a certain point to grab materials and to wait instead for the materials to come down the line. You decide to reach past this point anyway, and a supervisor sees you do this. This can result in penalties like a warning or immediate termination.

Rather than participating in this unethical practice, understand why the rules are there in the first place. Often, there is a good reason, even if it slows down a process.

It's important to lead by example to ensure that your colleagues continue to have integrity in the workplace. Here are some ways that people in leadership positions can establish, improve, and encourage integrity in the workplace:

Lead by example

Leading by example is one of the best ways to promote integrity in the workplace. If you want your team to have integrity in the working environment, you must first have it yourself; the rest will follow your example. For example, arrive at the office on time every day. This sets a great example for others to follow. 

Implement training programs

If your workplace employs a large number of people, setting up training programmes or workshops is the best way to train them and communicate the importance of integrity in the workplace. You can also have sessions that teach them other skills, such as communication, teamwork , discipline, and patience. Participate in these meetings yourself rather than sending out courses to your team to complete. 

Report unethical behaviour

While people may not like a manager who reports on their team members, sometimes doing so can show employees that you're serious about integrity in the workplace. If someone from your team is constantly acting against company policies despite several warnings, it may be best to report them to higher management. 

Integrity in the workplace can significantly benefit a company's policies by fostering a positive work environment and promoting open, honest communication and teamwork. This also leads to better trust and working relationships with supervisors and peers, and they're more likely to perform to the best of their abilities every day.

Companies and managers are responsible for ensuring that training workshops are introduced and that everyone participates. Team leaders and managers should also demonstrate workplace integrity and lead by example for the other employees in the company.

I Wish I Knew Earlier: The Importance of Light

Light is the cornerstone of photography. Without it, there are no images, and in landscape photography, the light's quality, direction, and intensity can make or break a shot. As a landscape photographer, understanding how light works is key to capturing the beauty and drama of nature. Over time, I’ve realized that mastering light is among the most crucial skills a landscape photographer can hone. Looking back, there are insights about light I wish I’d known earlier—knowledge that would have significantly boosted the quality of my early work.

The Importance of Light in Landscape Photography

Light defines the mood, texture, and depth of a landscape, transforming ordinary scenes into something special. The interaction of light with landscape elements—illuminating some areas while casting shadows on others—creates the contrast and dimension that make an image compelling.

In my early photography days, I often felt disappointed with my images, even in beautiful locations. The issue wasn’t the scenery; it was my lack of understanding of how to work with light. It took practice and a fair number of missed opportunities to realize that light is the most critical factor in landscape photography.

Golden Hour

The golden hour, occurring shortly after sunrise and before sunset, is a magical time for landscape photography. During these periods, the sun is low, casting warm, soft light that bathes the landscape in a golden hue. The long shadows during the golden hour add depth and texture, making the scene appear more three-dimensional.

In the beginning, I would shoot throughout the day, thinking that the bright midday sun would yield the best images. However, I quickly learned that the harsh light of midday often results in flat, uninspiring photos with deep shadows and blown-out highlights. It wasn’t until I started waking up early and staying out late to shoot during the golden hour that my images began to achieve a more professional quality. The warm tones and soft shadows of the golden hour bring out the best in a landscape, creating a mood and atmosphere difficult to replicate at other times of the day.

The blue hour is the twilight period just before sunrise and after sunset when the sun is below the horizon, yet the sky remains illuminated. The light during the blue hour is soft and diffused, with a bluish tint that creates a calm, serene mood in images.

Early in my career, I would pack up as soon as the sun dipped below the horizon, missing out on the blue hour’s opportunities. It wasn’t until I started experimenting with longer exposures during this time that I discovered the blue hour’s beauty. The cool tones of the blue hour contrast beautifully with the warm tones of artificial lights, making it an excellent time for capturing cityscapes and coastal scenes.

The Direction of Light

The direction of light hitting your subject profoundly impacts the final image. Understanding front light, side light, and backlight helps you position yourself relative to the light source and your subject.

Front Light: When light comes from behind you and shines directly onto your subject, it’s called front lighting. Front light can bring out colors and details but often results in flat images with little depth or texture. I find front light works best when emphasizing color and clarity without much concern for shadow and depth.
Side Light: Side lighting occurs when the light comes from the side of your subject. This type of lighting is ideal for creating depth, texture, and contrast. Shadows cast by side lighting add dimension, highlighting the terrain's contours and shapes. Side lighting is particularly effective in mountainous or hilly areas, where the interplay of light and shadow on the peaks and valleys creates a dramatic and visually striking image.
Backlight: Backlighting happens when the light source is behind your subject, shining towards the camera. Backlighting can be tricky, often resulting in silhouettes and blown-out highlights. However, when used correctly, backlighting can create stunning effects, like sunbursts, rim lighting, and silhouettes. I’ve learned to embrace backlighting to create a mood or atmosphere, such as shooting into the sun during the golden hour for a glowing, ethereal effect.

The Role of Weather in Lighting

Weather conditions significantly affect the quality and character of light in landscape photography. Different weather produces different types of light, each with unique qualities and challenges.

Clear Skies: On cloudless days, light is strong and direct, with little diffusion. While this can create vibrant, high-contrast images, it can also result in harsh shadows and blown-out highlights. Clear skies are best for shooting during the golden hour when the low sun angle softens the light and reduces contrast.
Cloudy Skies: Overcast skies act as a natural diffuser, softening the light and reducing contrast. While some photographers avoid shooting on cloudy days, I’ve come to appreciate the soft, even light that overcast conditions provide. This light is excellent for capturing details and textures without harsh shadows and bright highlights. Cloudy skies also create a moodier atmosphere, perfect for certain landscapes.
Stormy Weather: Stormy weather can produce some of the most dramatic light in landscape photography. The contrast between dark storm clouds and sunlight breaking through can create a powerful image. Shooting in stormy weather requires patience and bravery, but the rewards are often worth the effort.
Fog and Mist: Fog and mist can transform a landscape into a mystical, otherworldly scene. Diffused light in foggy conditions creates a soft, ethereal atmosphere, with reduced visibility giving a sense of depth and mystery. I’ve learned to embrace foggy mornings, especially in forests and along coastlines, where the mist can add calmness and serenity to the scene.

The Role of Post-Processing in Enhancing Light

Post-processing plays a crucial role in enhancing light in images. While capturing the best light possible in-camera is essential, post-processing allows you to refine and accentuate light to create the desired mood and atmosphere.

Adjusting Exposure: Exposure adjustments can help bring out details in the highlights and shadows, ensuring balanced and even light distribution across the image. Slight exposure adjustments can significantly impact the image's overall mood.
Dodging and Burning: Dodging (lightening) and burning (darkening) are powerful techniques for selectively adjusting the light in your image. These techniques can draw attention to specific areas, enhance contrast, and add depth.
White Balance Adjustments: Adjusting white balance significantly impacts the image's color and mood. A warmer white balance can enhance the golden tones of a sunrise or sunset, while a cooler white balance can emphasize the blue tones of the blue hour.
Enhancing Highlights and Shadows: Enhancing highlights and shadows can add depth and contrast, making the light feel more dynamic and three-dimensional.

What I Wish I Knew Earlier

Reflecting on my landscape photography journey, several key lessons about light would have been invaluable to know from the start:

The Power of Golden Hour: I used to think any time of day was suitable for shooting landscapes. Learning the importance of golden hour light transformed the quality of my images.
The Potential of Blue Hour: I often overlooked the blue hour, packing up too soon. Discovering the potential of blue hour light opened up new possibilities.
The Impact of Weather on Light: I used to avoid shooting in cloudy or stormy weather, thinking it would lead to dull images. I now understand that different weather conditions offer unique lighting opportunities.
The Role of Post-Processing: Early on, I underestimated the importance of post-processing in enhancing light.

Mastering light is the key to creating dramatic and compelling landscape photographs. 5 Lessons I Wish I Knew as a New Landscape Photographer

I am always impressed with Darren Spoonley and his ability to find a image during the bad weather and most always with thick cloud cover that no matter he is out there not inside somewhere else. His ability to see something in a landscape area and having the tool on hand to capture what he see's in his mind's eye. I live in Florida USA and all is very flat but I do travel to mountains every ones in a while and knowing before hand what to look for helps my camera eye. As far as light wants I find getting out at breakfast earlier before the rise in blue hour doing bracketed 5 at +/- 2EV that put together you get a image with stars above and a foreground bright with dark sides of things normally captured dark but after combined are lit and with sharpness. But you are on site for the golden hour and it is only and hour that you will have to be there before hand. Next it is feeding time for critters and birds lit from the sun side show colors. The same but in reverse at sunset time. All happens at meal times but great times for most all people are inside some where. I have a great wife that understands these times where i will bring breakfast (later) and I will fix something or have a meal early or have something after. The main point is the bracketing of your captures for you get 3 or 5 image to play with or merge, It only takes a few seconds to get that many of a time of day and place that the light will never be the same again in most cases. An example back in 2015 and learning to do milky way with little info I tried a +/- 1 but got each image with dead and hot pixels and HDR programs where kind of bad back then but going back to the images years later doing HDR got an image so clean and sharp and the colors of the MW's yin and yang and sky were perfect without a lot of slider movement. Another time I was having a anniversary dinner an saw a sunset out side through the windows and waiting for the meal I took a shot at +/- 5 EV like a inside landscape. But a cloudy daylight day capture spotted while driving and stopping beside the road. Cloudy days are great for colors but is very hard to get texture of the clouds above due to brightness of them and having to lower the main EV to -5 to reduce the highlights I did a hand held 3 at +/- 2EV I got a bright foreground and great texture of clouds, but like knowing never again will I be there ever again I had 3 images and not just one to play with. Another at sunset with colors all over with eyes I did my normal sunset bracketing hand held of 3 at +/- 2EV for a capture of shrimp boats. after merging one slider of dehaze brought out the deep blue in the sky I saw but only one image had but the foreground was bad the combo did it. All just info and if your camera has IBIS and lens with OSS/IS you do not need to walk around with a tripod at the ready.

Tips to prepare for UPSC Mains Essay paper

JERUSALEM — Three hundred and thirty-two days after Hersh Goldberg-Polin danced in the courtyard next to his Jerusalem synagogue on the holiday of Simchat Torah, more than a thousand people gathered there in grief and prayer to mourn his murder by Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

During the Sunday night vigil, the courtyard railings were lined with oversized yellow ribbons to symbolize advocacy for the hostages, Hapoel Jerusalem soccer flags — the 23-year-old’s favorite team — and posters that read, “We love you, stay strong, survive,” a mantra coined by his mother, Rachel Goldberg-Polin.

Just hours earlier, one of the posters had been hanging over the balcony of the home of Shira Ben-Sasson, a leader of Hakhel, the Goldberg-Polins’ egalitarian congregation in the Baka neighborhood of Jerusalem.

“We were sure we would take it down when he came home,” Ben-Sasson said.

The community wanted to unite while respecting the Goldberg-Polins’ desire for privacy, she said, prompting them to organize the prayer gathering.

“But it’s like a Band-Aid or giving first aid, it’s what you do in an emergency. I don’t know how we go on after this,” she said.

She added that the community, which has a large contingent of English-speaking immigrants, was not prepared for the High Holidays, which begin in about a month. She said, “Seeing his empty seat is hard.”

For Ben-Sasson, who wore a T-shirt bearing the Talmudic dictum “There is no greater mitzvah than the redeeming of captives,” the tragedy is especially painful because, she said, it could have been avoided with a ceasefire agreement that freed hostages.

“Hersh was alive 48 hours ago. We think a deal could have saved him. There is no military solution to this,” she said.

That feeling of bereavement, often mixed with betrayal, pervaded gatherings across Israel on Sunday, as the country struggled with the news that six hostages who may have been freed in an agreement were now dead as negotiations continue to stall. Speakers at protests in Tel Aviv blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who himself apologized for not getting the hostages out alive but blamed Hamas for obstructing a deal. The country’s labor union, the Histadrut, has called a national strike on Monday to demand a deal.

A rare early September rain lashed parts of Israel on Sunday, leading to a widespread interpretation: God, too, was weeping.

Some at the Jerusalem gathering, including the relative of another former hostage, said Netanyahu had chosen defeating Hamas over freeing the captives.

Josef Avi Yair Engel, whose grandson Ofir, 18, was released from Hamas captivity in November during that month’s ceasefire deal, expressed shock over Hersh’s murder but said he was not surprised, given the wartime policies of Netanyahu’s government.

“We knew months ago this was going to happen. Bibi’s formula, to dismantle Hamas and return the hostages, wasn’t logical. It’s an either/or situation,” Engel said, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname. “He’s tearing the country apart. I’m afraid that in the coming months there won’t be a state at all.”

Engel said he felt a close bond with Hersh’s father Jon Polin, not only because of their joint activism in the hostage families’ tent outside the Prime Minister’s Residence, but also because of their shared identity as Jerusalemites.

“There aren’t many of us in the hostage circle,” he said. “We’re like family.”

Sarah Mann, who did not know the family personally, said the weekend’s tragedy reminded her of Oct. 7.

“This day has sparks of the seventh, which created numbness and an inability to talk. Just complete shock,” she said.

Mourners left notes at a gathering at Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s family synagogue in Jerusalem. Many of the messages used the Hebrew word for “sorry.” (Deborah Danan)

Part of the reason for that, Mann said, was Rachel, who she described as a “force of faith.” Goldberg-Polin’s mother emerged as the most prominent advocate for the hostages globally and became a symbol in her own right as she crisscrossed the world calling for her son’s freedom.

“Millions of people around the world held onto her. Once that was cut, people’s ability to hold onto faith was knocked out today. But even though this has shattered us, we need to keep holding onto God,” Mann said.

For Susi Döring Preston, the day called to mind was not Oct. 7 but Yom Kippur, and its communal solemnity.

She said she usually steers clear of similar war-related events because they are too overwhelming for her.

“Before I avoided stuff like this because I guess I still had hope. But now is the time to just give in to needing to be around people because you can’t hold your own self up any more,” she said, tears rolling down her face. “You need to feel the humanity and hang onto that.”

Like so many others, Döring Preston paid tribute to the Goldberg-Polins’ tireless activism. “They needed everyone else’s strength but we drew so much strength from them and their efforts, “she said. “You felt it could change the outcome. But war is more evil than good. I think that’s the crushing thing. You can do everything right, but the outcome is still devastating.”

Guy Gordon, a member of Hakhel who moved to Israel from Dublin, Ireland, in the mid-1990s, said the efforts towards ensuring Hersh’s safe return have been an anchor for the community during the war. The community knew him as the family described him in its announcement of his funeral on Tuesday, as “a child of light, love and peace” who enjoyed exploring the world and coming home to his family, including his parents and younger sisters, Leebie and Orly.

“It gave us something to hope for, and pray for and to demonstrate for,” he said. “We had no choice but to be unreasonably optimistic. Tragically it transpired that he survived until the very end.”

Gordon, like many others in the crowd, wore a piece of duct tape marked with the number of days since Oct. 7 — a gesture initiated by Goldberg-Polin’s mother. Unlike on previous days, though, his tape also featured a broken red heart beside the number.

Nadia Levene, a family friend, also reflected on the improbability of Hersh’s survival.

“He did exactly what his parents begged him to do. He was strong. He did survive. And look what happened,” Levene said.

She hailed Rachel Goldberg-Polin’s “unwavering strength and belief in God,” adding, “There were times I lost faith. I suppose I was angry with God. But she just kept inspiring us all to pray, pray, pray.”

Jerusalem resident Leah Silver rejected politicizing the hostages’ deaths.

“Everything turns political so quickly. I came here because I felt that before all the protests, we need to just mourn for a moment and to pray. And show respect for each other,” she said. “We’ve become confused about who the enemy is. It’s very sad.”

But not everyone at the gathering joined in to sing Israel’s national anthem at the closing of the prayer gathering.

“I’m sorry, I can’t sing ‘Hatikvah,'” Reza Green, a Baka resident who did not know the Goldberg-Polins personally, said. “I’m too angry. We shouldn’t be here.”
