People have recognized the problems that social media causes. Platforms like Reddit and Facebook have a community now, which gives a safe space to people who want to share their experiences or seek advice.

Now, let’s glance at the disadvantages of social media and how it has a negative impact on society.

Top 7 Disadvantages of Social Media

The dangers of social media are massive, and despite the fact that it has numerous benefits, the effects of social media can lead to harmful results sometimes.

1. Lack of Security

As social media has become more accessible to anyone with an internet connection, people have become more vulnerable to hacking.

Many users upload important parts of their lives to social media platforms, communicate with people they don’t know and are uneducated about the do and don’ts of having a social media account.

This leads to hackers taking advantage of such people and ending up costing them valuable information.

2. Leads To Addiction

The ability to interact and contact friends and family at any time and from anywhere, along with a great volume of content, has led to social media addiction . We’ve also covered some points on how to beat social media addiction .

People spend more time on social media, communicating with people all over the world, and consuming content, and as a result, they get disconnected from their surroundings.

3. Unrealistic Expectations

What we see on social media is the ‘ideal’ part of a person’s life, and not their insecurities and problems.

When we forget this, we start to compare the negative parts of our lives with the positive parts of the lives of our peers that we see online. In the long run, this damages our self-esteem.

4. Adverse Influence on Children

Children who are addicted to social media spend hours per day watching videos, photos, and other content posted by the accounts they follow.

Other activities, such as schoolwork, sports, study, and other productive routines, are jeopardized by this addiction. In the end, the influence of social media negatively impacts the well-being of children.

It also affects their socializing skills as they find it more comfortable to talk on the phone rather than face the person.

5. Digital Fatigue

After spending so much time on social media, especially during lockdown, many people are now facing the problem of digital fatigue. The constant screentime and virtual interaction can exhaust a human and make them feel lonely

6. Cyberbullying and online harassment

This issue existed before, but it has increased to a greater level as more and more people are using social media. Whether your work is good or excellent, some people will always be there to criticize your content. But cyberbullying and online harassment cases can get worse.

7. Social comparison and mental health issues

Humans always tend to compare their situations with others, and social media has increased this issue of comparison, which makes people feel inadequate and pressure themselves to meet unrealistic standards. This eventually leads to feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem .

Role of Social Media in Shaping Society

In the ever-evolving digital world, social media plays a pivotal role in shaping society. Whether we’re scrolling through our feeds or sharing our thoughts, it’s undeniable that social media has a significant impact, both positive and negative, on how we perceive the environment around us.

One of the key advantages of social media is its ability to connect people from all corners of the globe. Through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X, we can bridge geographical barriers and interact with individuals we might never have encountered otherwise. This connectivity fosters a sense of global community, where ideas, cultures, and experiences can be shared and celebrated.

Moreover, social media serves as a powerful tool for activism and social change. Movements like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo has gained momentum through online platforms, amplifying voices and catalyzing real-world action. Social media empowers individuals to raise awareness about important issues and mobilize others to join their cause, sparking meaningful dialogue and driving societal progress.

Let’s discuss some key points that significantly contributes in the society:

(a) Political Influence: The introduction of social media has changed the way of conducting political campaigns. It has become a primary tool for leaders, politicians, etc to discuss, support or present their thoughts. Social media helps these politicians to disseminate information, engage in politics-related debates, boost their popularity, etc.

(b) Change in Consumer Behavior: Hands down, there’s no denying the fact that social media influences consumer behavior like no other. Image and video sharing platforms like Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat have helped businesses and marketers immensely in branding, promoting and selling the products. These highly appealing images boost impulsive buying among the users and persuade them to either make a purchase or at least check the product/service once.

© Impact on mental health: With the constant exposure to different forms of content and people, social media highly impacts mental health of individuals. The curated, idealized versions of people and their life lowers the self-esteem of individuals and they start doubting themselves.

Apart from this, cyberbullying, trolling affects mental health in unimaginable ways.

In conclusion, social media offers both benefits and drawbacks, but it all relies on the individual who uses it.

The information provided can be seen as debatable but our article is not a thesis on social media and is just an accumulation of researched information in a simple and precise format.

Essay on Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media in 300 Words

All the hours we spend on social media offer us exposure to the latest trends and activities across the globe. Our traditional way of communication and sharing information has been revolutionized by social media. Everybody agrees that social media platforms offer us information and lessons that we might not be able to grasp from books or experts. But the scale or balance of social media is tilted towards the disadvantages it offers us. This essay on advantages and disadvantages of social media highlights all the aspects.

Advantages of Social Media

  • The advantages of social media include easy and instantaneous communication. It helps people connect with friends, family, and colleagues regardless of geographical barriers.
  • It allows users to share their thoughts, experiences, and ideas with a broader audience, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
  • Social media serves as a platform for networking and professional growth, enabling individuals to connect with potential employers, clients, and business partners.
  • It plays a crucial role in spreading awareness and information. It disseminates news, promotes social causes, and raises awareness about important issues.

Disadvantages of Social Media

With all the advantages of social media listed above, it also brings certain disadvantages.

  • Misleading and fake information is one of the major disadvantages of social media. This can have serious consequences, including the spread of misinformation during crises or the manipulation of public opinion.
  • Excessive use of social media can lead to addiction and negative impacts on mental health.
  • Constant exposure to curated and often idealized versions of others’ lives can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.
  • It can also lead to decreased productivity and social isolation, as some users may prioritize virtual interactions over real-life relationships.
  • Another concern is privacy issues and data breaches. We as users share personal information, making us vulnerable to data breaches and invasions of our privacy. This can lead to identity theft and other cybercrimes, posing significant risks to users’ security and well-being.

Social Media Impact on Students: Advantages and Disadvantages

Social media has had a big impact on reducing the ability of children to pay attention for long periods of time. The constant switching between different applications, videos, games, and messages trains the brains of young minds to have a short focus.

The youngsters grow accustomed to the quick bursts of novelty and the dopamine that social media provides them. Their minds get restless and easily get bored when they are asked to concentrate on something for more than a few minutes at a time. In the future, continuous reading, lectures, or work will become challenging for them.

The nature of multimedia sites like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube overexcites the brains of children. Rapid receiving of fire streams of fresh content is designed to grab and keep their attention at all costs. All this overloads the senses and cognitive abilities of young minds.

Further, the apps also encourage endless scrolling and switching of content by auto-playing the next video or suggesting a new watch. Children develop the habit of constantly shifting their focus instead of concentrating on a single task.

However, social media also offers some benefits to children. It helps the kids generate new ideas and perspectives worldwide. It allows the young ones to learn about trending events and issues that society cares about. There are numerous tech videos that are created with the concept of being fun, engaging, and easy to learn simultaneously.

Further, social media also provides creative outlets for the children to express themselves through photos, videos, writing, and art. It allows them to develop interests and easily connect with people around them who share their passions.

As it said, excess of everything is bad; therefore, parents and teachers must guide children on the balanced use of social media. They should teach young minds to promote the habits of single-tasking and good focus. If it is not done, then the distracting nature of applications will increase the reduction in attentiveness.

In conclusion, social media comes with predominantly negative conditions as well as some positive sides. Proper guidance and a correct learning approach will help the child differentiate between the two in the correct manner and will help increase their ability to focus on whatever they do.

Essay on Disadvantages of Social Media

Students are often asked to write an essay on Disadvantages of Social Media in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Disadvantages of Social Media

Introduction.

Social media has become a major part of our lives. While it offers many benefits, it also has significant drawbacks.

Privacy Concerns

One of the biggest disadvantages of social media is the lack of privacy. Personal information can be misused, leading to identity theft.

Social media can be addictive. Excessive use can lead to a waste of time, impacting studies and other important tasks.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is another serious issue. It can lead to mental stress and can even cause harm.

250 Words Essay on Disadvantages of Social Media

Social media, a significant innovation of the 21st century, has transformed the way we communicate and share information. Despite its numerous benefits, it has brought about some notable drawbacks.

A primary disadvantage of social media is the erosion of privacy. Users often share personal information, making them susceptible to data breaches and identity theft. Moreover, the digital footprints left behind can be misused, leading to potential harm.

Mental Health Implications

Overuse of social media has been linked to mental health problems. The constant comparison with others’ lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression. It can also disrupt sleep patterns, causing further health issues.

Spread of Misinformation

Social media platforms can act as a breeding ground for misinformation and fake news. This can lead to confusion, panic, and, in some cases, serious real-world consequences.

Decrease in Productivity

The addictive nature of social media can lead to procrastination and decreased productivity. Excessive time spent on these platforms often detracts from more meaningful activities and responsibilities.

500 Words Essay on Disadvantages of Social Media

Social media has revolutionized the way we communicate and share information. With platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn, we can connect with people from all corners of the globe. However, while it is a powerful tool, it also has its drawbacks. This essay will delve into the disadvantages of social media.

One of the significant downsides of social media is the infringement of privacy. Users often share personal information, photos, and locations, making them vulnerable to privacy invasion. Cybercriminals can exploit this data for identity theft or other malicious activities. Furthermore, social media platforms collect vast amounts of user data, leading to concerns about data privacy and security.

Social media has become a breeding ground for misinformation and fake news. The speed at which information spreads can lead to the rapid dissemination of unverified or false information, causing panic, confusion, and potentially harmful consequences. This issue has been particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where misinformation regarding the virus spread rapidly on various platforms.

Productivity Loss

Excessive use of social media can lead to a significant loss in productivity. It’s easy to lose track of time while scrolling through feeds, leading to procrastination and distraction from essential tasks. This constant availability also blurs the line between work and personal life, potentially leading to burnout.

Social Isolation

While social media offers many benefits, it’s essential to be aware of its potential drawbacks. Privacy concerns, mental health issues, the spread of misinformation, productivity loss, and social isolation are all significant disadvantages. As users, it’s crucial to use these platforms responsibly, being mindful of the information we share and the time we spend. As society becomes increasingly digital, understanding the pitfalls of social media is more important than ever.

Social networking sites are serving a crucial role these days in the life of human beings to fill the distance gap between relatives. Nowadays people can connect with the help of these networking sites easily without spending much money. The coming of live video calling facility on these sites is like a big positive point that makes people feel very near to each other. There are scores of social networking sites that are being accessed by people according to their comfort and interest. The ultimate purpose of these sites is to keep in touch with friends and relatives but they are also used these days for business promotion as well. Thus we can say that social networking sites play a great role in various fields of life. How we can see social networking sites as best and worst for society? [Advantages & Disadvantages] Social networking sites are useful to keep people near each other through communicating by using these sites. But at the same time, there are several drawbacks as well which are related to these sites. For example, sometimes various fake people misuse your name and photos in disguise to harm you in every way. People who are interested in making friends online often get trapped in the scams that are made by fake people online on these social sites. At the same time, we can see these sites are proving out to be the wrong medium for communication to the terror groups. But like well said by a philosopher and politician nothing can be harmful and useful completely so is the case with social media and there are many positive points of it. So we cannot consider it purely harmful and useful in a balanced state. What if we ignore connecting with people on social networking sites? There is a point that if someone ignores using social networking sites, he or she can keep him away from the scams and drawbacks of social media. But it is not a relevant solution to stay away from social networking sites and that is too in this scenario where everything is possible on social networking sites. A person who will not show any interest in social media will lose many positive things in his life. Such people fail to build a strong bond with the people in their circle. At the same time, everyone finds them different from society and starts ignoring them. That is why it is very harmful and tragic to maintain a distance from social media for the people.  It is good to accept its reality by adapting to both the positive and negative phases. That is how you can reap the complete benefit of technology and science which is flourishing at every point these days. Buy Customized Essay on Social Networking At Cheapest Price Order Now Social Networking Essay Conclusion From the above arguments and relevant solutions, we can see the importance of social media in human life. If someone is not aware of the use of social networking sites he cannot stay in connection to his near and dear. Today social networking sites are serving a big role in the life of people for developing their business. The lack of awareness about these social sites also keeps you behind in the business advertisement as well. So we can say that one should be able to have access to social networking sites in the present time to flourish one’s business and relations as well. But a good eye should be kept to avoid the fake people and anti-social elements that can put you in trouble through these sites. People who are a newbie to social media should take a good demonstration for having access to their social media accounts from professionals. Disadvantages of Social Networking: Surprising Insights from Teens

by Marilyn Price-Mitchell, PhD

social networking disadvantages essay

“Honestly, I sometimes truly wish that ‘tools’ such as the iPhone (or any smartphone), laptops, iPads, tablets, etc. hadn’t been invented. Sure, they’re great, incredibly useful, and fun time-killers. But the way teenagers abuse them, and turn them into mini social control rooms is frankly awful.”

At first glance, you might think this quote came from a parent or grandparent lamenting on the disadvantages of social networking and how social media has doomed today’s children. But it was written by a Seattle-area tenth grader as part of an assignment to answer the question, “How has online social networking influenced your relationships with friends and family?”

This student goes on to write, “The teenage way of life has completely changed from what it was only twenty years ago. Now, there is a dramatic decrease in face-to-face communication, which reduces our generation’s ability to interact with others on a speaking level.”

Not coincidentally, this same message was echoed by the young people interviewed in Tomorrow’s Change Makers: Reclaiming the Power of Citizenship for a New Generation . Youth engaged in their communities claim that face-to-face interactions is what motivates them to make a difference in the world.

This is a two-part article gleaned from reviewing the essays of a class of tenth graders, with their permission, of course. It is meant to generate additional discussion on the benefits and disadvantages of social networking and its effect on healthy youth development.

Below are the most discussed disadvantages of social networking according to these tenth graders, including quotes from their essays. In a similar format, you can also read reflections on the benefits of social networking in my column at Psychology Today.

10 Disadvantages of Social Networking

1. lacks emotional connection.

“A couple weeks ago, one of my friends and I got into a fight and she told me all of her feelings as to why she ignored me for two weeks. Assuming it would have been really hard to say it to my face, she sent me a text message. The negative side was I didn’t know if she truly felt sorry because I didn’t hear it from her. The quality of a conversation using social media is awful because you cannot sense the emotion or enthusiasm from the other person. It makes you wonder if they actually mean what they say.”

2. Gives People a License to be Hurtful

“I do think it has gotten to an extreme point where you can say things you can’t say or get away with in person.”

“I’m disappointed whenever I hear about social media being used as a way to hurt people. I wonder if this happens when the writers forget that there are real people behind the screen.”

3. Decreases Face-to-Face Communication Skills

“Computer reliance could hurt a person’s ability to have a face to face conversation by making it awkward and unusual to hear something and respond with a thoughtful message through the spoken word because of one’s dependence on a keyboard to convey a message.”

4. Conveys Inauthentic Expression of Feelings

“Social media conversations today are filled with “haha”, “LOL”, and other exclamations that are meant to represent laughter. This shorthand has become second nature and is often used when the sender is not even smiling, much less laughing, in real life. On the occasion that our “roflcopter” is actually put to use at a funny moment, we are replacing actual laughter with, in this case, a simple ten-letter acronym. According to Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary psychologist at Oxford, the actual physical act of laughter, and not the abstract idea of something being funny, is what makes laughing feel so good. If we are so willing to replace the act that, honestly, we all love, with an artificial, typed representation that doesn’t even bring the same joy, what else would we be, potentially subconsciously, willing to exchange?”

Disadvantages of Social Networking: Surprising Insights from Teens | Roots of Action

5. Diminishes Understanding and Thoughtfulness

“Since the inception of social networking, the quality of conversations has dropped. I believe that people are spending so much time online that they don’t always understand the feeling, emotion and/or character of the person they are talking to. When you talk to someone through a message or even a voice, you can’t always fully understand them.”

“Social networking has ruined the thoughtfulness in basically saying hello in person. For instance, you could say hello to your friend in Germany with Facebook, chat in seconds; but what if there was no way to communicate via social networking? Well you would have to write them a letter and that is something very thoughtful.”

6. Causes Face-to-Face Interactions to Feel Disconnected

“When I see my friends on their phones and I am around them, I feel disconnected even though we are only two feet apart….. Unfortunately, sometimes friends use their phones so much that it is difficult to have an actual conversation with them. Sometimes friends can get so socially attached to something such as a blog or gaming console that they lose touch with friends, creating small gaps and holes in close friendships/relationships.”

7. Facilitates Laziness

“The new socially active era causes laziness because instead of running to your friends you can message them. Or instead of walking upstairs to notify the family of dinner, I can blog it. Social networking makes life so convenient that it creates laziness. In my opinion staying fit is important, but it is difficult to go beyond the newly developed status quo.”

“It’s really easy to spend hours doing nothing….It’s a fantastic way to waste time.”

8. Creates a Skewed Self-Image

“We tell ourselves lies about ourselves and develop something we are not. We post pictures of us looking perfect and share the good news. We never post pictures of ourselves when our dog dies, when someone we love leaves, and when we lose a job. We never share the bad news that always clouds our lives. We all develop this perfect image of ourselves and some of us actually try to rely on this imaginative thought we have of ourselves instead of staying true to who we are.”

9. Reduces Family Closeness

“Texting, Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail alienate us from our families more than we actually think it does…. When my family is spending family time together and watching a movie, in reality my brother and I are on our phones rather than actually watching the movie with our parents.”

10. Causes Distractions

“When I have my phone out, it makes me feel like nothing else is going on around me. I use social media as a way to feel popular, important, and also just to fit in. My friends and I always compare ourselves to each other, wondering who has more Facebook friends or Twitter followers. But what really ends up happening is I begin to talk less and end up relying on text for a conversation. Ever since I got a smartphone I have been distracted from everything. I watch television less, do homework less, and even spend less time with my friends and family.”

Addressing the Disadvantages of Social Networking

The disadvantages of social networking and social media will be studied for decades to come. The 10th-grade essays used for this article are five years old now but they could easily have been written today.

In the last five years, social media has proven to be a significant source of concern among privacy advocates, particularly with concerns over how Cambridge Analytica used Facebook data. Parents have become increasingly worried about their children’s safety online and how to protect their personal data.

But clearly, the disadvantages of social networking go much deeper than privacy and safety. These high school students described some of the serious drawbacks to relationships and mental health — foundations of human development.

In the past several years, more studies have linked social media to poor mental health. According to a recent Forbes article , several studies have not only shown a correlation but also a causation. Findings suggest that people who limit social media to 30 minutes daily feel significantly better than those who use social media for longer periods of time. By reducing time spent, people were able to reduce depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

Recent statistics from the Pew Research Center show that social networking usage has remained unchanged in the past four years. This may suggest a saturation point has been reached. It may also be a hopeful sign that people are learning to manage social media in healthier ways; or at least they don’t show an insatiable appetite for more. In addition, most people don’t trust news from social networking sites–only 5% of U.S. adults have a lot of trust in this information.

Among Americans from 12-34 years old, Facebook usage declined from 79% in 2017 to 62% today. The only social network growing among U.S. youth is Instagram, up from 64% to 66% in the past two years.

Researchers suggest that helping children and teens learn to manage social networking is paramount to their healthy development. Most experts agree that parents must lead the way by setting a good example of what healthy computer usage looks like. Family meetings are a great venue to discuss social networking and computer usage with the whole family and get buy-in for solutions.

Avantages and Disadvantages of Social Media Essay

Over the past decade, social media has evolved from the early adopter’s marketing experiment to a trusted channel for marketing.

But like any other technology, social media has its advantages and disadvantages. Here’s a pros and cons of social media essay for insights into the nuances of social media.

Find the list of the best advantages and worst disadvantages of social media essay. If you want to add more points to this, feel free to reach out to us.

20 Pros of Social Media Essay

Some of the biggest advantages of social media include:

1. Faster Spread of Information than Other Media

46% of Americans get their news from social media sites. While the top news source remains television, with 66% of Americans staying in the loop watching news channels, many incidents are reported on social media much before they appear on TV. The Paris attacks in November 2015 are one good example of this.

It’s also worth noting that 78.5% of reporters use social media to find the latest news.

2. Helpful in Solving Crimes

Authorities such as The NYPD use Twitter and other social networking websites to locate and arrest criminals that post about their crimes.

What’s more surprising is that a survey conducted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police revealed that 85% of police departments scour social media to find evidence and solve crimes.

3. Aids Students in Performing Better Academically

After Elizabeth Delmatoff introduced a social media program to her seventh-grade students in George Middle School in Portland, Oregon, their grades shot up by 50% , and absenteeism was reduced by a third.

With 59% of students reporting that they use social media sites to discuss their education, social media is certainly not all bad.

4. Improves Relationships and Helps Make New Friends

About four of every five teenagers affirm that using social media helps them feel more connected to their friends. 68% of the survey respondents reported that social media helps them feel supported when times are difficult.

What’s more, roughly three of every five teens make new friends online. But it doesn’t stop there. Roughly 90% of adults use Facebook to connect with family and friends.

5. Empowers Businesswomen

Only 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women, making it difficult for them to find like-minded people that can offer support. Social media makes it easy for businesswomen to connect with each other and find refuge in each other’s struggles. This point could be expanded into an entire social media essay topic.

6. Enables Employers and Job-Seekers to Connect

You’d be surprised to learn that 96% of recruiters use social media to find prospective employees. LinkedIn is the most popular platform amongst recruiters, with 87% relying on it to find capable candidates.

About half of surveyed employees report that social media helped them find their current job . Social media is also a popular means to find internships.

7. Increases Quality of Life and Reduces Risk of Health Problems

A 2009 report revealed that using social media can improve life satisfaction, memory, and overall well-being by connecting users with a large social group.

Furthermore, looking at friends post about their exercise, diet, and smoking cessation goals has a contagious effect that motivates the user.

8. Facilitates In-Person Interaction

When comparing the advantages and disadvantages of social media essay, one of the best things about social media is that you can connect with virtually anybody over private messages.

Plans to meet in person are often made on social media , with users messaging close friends 39 days of the year but meeting with them 210 days of the year on average.

9. Increases Voter Participation

If you’re looking for a social media essay example, you could easily write an impactful essay about increased voter participation. Facebook users are more likely to vote when they see their friends vote on the site.

10. Facilitates Political Change

There is an abundance of examples of people using social media to start movements. Perhaps the most relevant example considering the current political climate is when Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students in Parkland, Florida, used Twitter to promote gun control protests after a deadly shooting.

Their posts drew over a million participants and resulted in thousands of voter registrations. This is one of the best social media essay example.

11. Good for the Economy

With social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter adding between $900 billion to $1.3 trillion to the economy, the added productivity and improved customer service facilitated over social media seem like secondary advantages.

The day Snapchat began trading on NYSE, it was valued at $24 billion, which is a testament to social media’s contribution to the economy.

12. Drives Social Change on a Community Level

One excellent example of social media essay topics is the incident in Hillsborough, CA . Freshman goalie Daniel Cui was bullied for being the reason for the season loss. But his teammates and classmates came to the rescue, changing their profile pictures to a photo of Daniel saving a goal.

13. Helps Senior Citizens Feel More Connected

One of the best things about social media is that senior citizens feel happier using it since it allows them to connect with their families.

Additionally, social media provides them with access to things like church bulletins, which are no longer printed and distributed, and are simply posted online.

Per a 2015 study , senior citizens stand among the fastest-growing demographic groups on social media platforms, seeing a 32% increase between 2008 and 2015.

14. Helps Socially Isolated People Connect

One in four teens say that using social media helps them feel less shy, with 53% of teens identifying as shy. 28% of the respondents feel more outgoing, and 20% feel more confident using social media platforms.

Naturally, shy adults seem to feel the same way , reporting being comfortable interacting with people online.

15. Enables Quick Dissemination of Public Health/Safety Information

Organizations such as the WHO use social media platforms to deliver reliable health information over social media platforms. They also use it to debunk rumors.

The WHO’s efforts reap great results. An excellent example is when the organization refuted claims that ingesting salt helped combat radiation after Japan’s earthquake and nuclear disaster in 2011.

16. Disarms Social Stigmas

Social media played an important role in removing the stigma of homosexuality, but that’s not all. It also helps people such as Jenny Lawson, the author of The Bloggess , discuss their struggles with mental illness and lessen the stigma of the diseases for people in similar situations.

17. Facilitates Crowdfunding and Crowdsourcing

Social media can be extremely helpful to people in need. One example of this is when a mother found a kidney donor for her child by posting a video about it on Facebook .

Everyone remembers the Ice Bucket Challenge – it helped raise $100.9 million for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in a month.

18. Makes Academic Research More Accessible

The general public does not have access to expensive databases and restricted journals. Social media enables researchers from across fields to share updates about their research to the public, making it more transparent and helping prove incorrect information false.

19. Helps Businesses Grow

This advantage of social media can also be used as a social media essay example. 85% of customers that find a business’s products helpful recommend the products to others on Facebook.

What’s more, 71% of a business’s social media followers are more likely to purchase their products.

20. Aids Teachers in Collaborating and Communicating with Students

With 80% of university faculty using social media , the instructors of the modern world connect with their students more closely. 50% of teachers report using social media to teach, and 30% use it to communicate with their students.

Social media also makes it possible for educators to connect with experts over sites such as Twitter and give guest lectures using tools like Zoom.

21. Helps Artists Garner a Fan Base

About three in five teens listen to music on YouTube, allowing talented artists to reach their target audience without much hassle. YouTube has become the “hit-maker” of this generation, with fewer students listening to the radio.

22. Enables Colleges and Universities to Recruit and Retain Students

You’ll find it surprising that 96.6% of institutions offering four-year courses use Facebook to recruit students. Other popular platforms for this purpose include Twitter and YouTube.

Social media platforms are also utilized to provide a support system to students, helping increase student retention.

23. Facilitates Rapid Communication During Crises

Twitter became an invaluable tool for French citizens during the terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015. Thousands tweeted #PorteOuverte to help those who were stranded find shelter.

Over a third of law enforcement professionals use social media platforms to spread the word about emergencies and disasters.

Cons of Social Media

Social media, just like any other technology, has some unique disadvantages:

1. Enables the Spread of False Information

Fake news is abundant on social media, with 64% of Twitter u sers reporting finding information on the platform only to discover its falsity later. 16% of these respondents said they retweeted the information, not knowing it was false.

It’s no wonder that false news spreads six times faster than factual information on Twitter.

2. Exposes User Data to Corporations and Governments

In 2015, the US government submitted about 37,000 data requests to Facebook and over 7,000 data requests to Twitter . About 80% of these requests were honored at least partially.

That’s not all. The NSA can read your private social media messages without any hassle – they only need to put your name into their system.

3. Negatively Impacts Student Grades

Students that use social media have an average GPA of 3.06, while those that don’t use it average a GPA of 3.82 . This is an excellent topic for a negative effects of social media essay.

What’s more surprising is that students that use social media during their study time score 20% lower on tests.

4. Leads to Stress and Relationship Problems

Per a 2016 study , social media overuse in adolescence can result in decreased relationship success later in life. This is because communicating online hinders the teens’ development of conflict management skills.

5. Wastes Time

With internet users between the ages 16 and 64 spending an average of 1.72 hours on social media , it is one of the most common ways of killing time.

Over one in three people think social media is the biggest waste of time. When social media users receive a notification, it takes them between 20 and 25 minutes to return to the original task. 30% of the time, it takes two hours for the user to get back to their work.

6. Harms Employment Prospects

More than half of recruiters reconsider hiring an applicant after looking at their social media activity. Recruiters tend to negatively react to things such as profanity, poor grammar, sexual content, and illegal drugs on a prospective employee’s social media.

7. Social Media Use Correlates to Brain and Personality Disorders

Social media use is associated with increased depression in adults between 19 and 32. What’s more, social media addiction is proven to reflect increased narcissistic traits .

8. Reduces Time Spent Interacting In-Person

One of the most concerning disadvantages on this list, 34% of people reported spending less time with family in their home in 2011, up from 8% in 2000.

9. Social Media is Used to Promote and Commit Crime

Criminal gangs use social media platforms to coordinate violence, threaten other gangs, and recruit young members.

Furthermore, many criminals record their crimes and post them on these platforms to show off. This has resulted in the phenomenon of “performance crime.”

10. Endangers Journalists and Activists

ISIS killed a freelancing journalist in 2015 for reporting about life under the regime on Facebook. But this is only one case of thousands.

Several Bangladeshi bloggers were killed by religious fundamentalists between 2015 and 2016 for posting their thoughts about atheism on social media.

11. Reduces Employee Productivity

More than half of employees that use social media for work report that it distracts them from their tasks.

12. Facilitates Cyberbullying

52% of students have been victims of cyberbullying at some point, with 84% reporting that they were bullied on Facebook. This is concerning since victims in middle school are two times more likely to commit suicide .

13. Enables Sexting

Two of five teenagers post or send sexually suggestive messages and images, with 22% of girls and 18% of boys posting nude or semi-nude photos online.

Many teens and adults have been charged with the possession and distribution of child porn , even when the picture was their own.

14. Increases Risk of Social Isolation

Using social media can enhance the feelings of disconnection, putting children at a high risk of depression and other issues. Doom scrolling and passive consumption of social media are related to loneliness .

15. Enables Spread of Hate Groups

The hate groups focused on former President Barack Obama are one well-known example of social media hate groups. These groups cause a resurgence of racism that hasn’t been in mainstream media for decades.

16. Endangers Children

Around 600 Dutch riot police officers intervened and broke up a teen’s birthday party after 30,000 people were invited to it accidentally. The post was meant to be private on Facebook, but it went viral. Incidents like these are more common than you’d think.

17. Enables Cheating in School

Two Maryland students were accused of cheating in 10 th grade after posting the Common Core tests’ questions on Twitter. Social media makes it easy for students to find such information.

18. Facilitates Advertising Practices that Breach Privacy

When a Facebook user clicks a brand’s like button, the brand gets all the info they need about the user. They can learn everything from their work to their birth date and interests. Marketers can leverage this data to make profits.

19. Facilitates Inappropriate Student-Teacher Relationships

In the 2015-16 school year, the Texas Education Agency opened over 220 cases about inappropriate relationships between students and instructors. Educations experts believe the rise of these issues has resulted from the increased use of social media.

20. Makes Artists Vulnerable to Copyright Infringement

Accounts that share content created by other social media users rack up millions of views and generate profits. This loss of intellectual property and income is quite common. Many YouTube vloggers lose thousands of dollars because someone else shared their content on Facebook.

21. Harms Students’ Chances for College Admission

One in four admission officers look at the applicant’s social media profile to learn more about them. Poor grammar, profanity, and other negative content often lead to a student’s application getting rejected.

22. Posts Cannot be Completely Deleted

All public Tweets since March 2006 are archived by The Library of Congress. Additionally, details of issues such as an affair posted on Facebook can be used against someone in court during divorce proceedings because the information can never be completely deleted.

23. Social Media Users are Vulnerable to Cyberattacks

Social media platforms are not equipped with virus scanners, making it easy for hackers to send virus-loaded files via chat. Furthermore, with many making sensitive information such as their birth date, phone number, and high school name available on their social media, identity theft becomes a threat.

We can get our fix of current events through this medium, share our favorite websites with one another, and capture moments using pictures and video to share with family and friends.

There are many positives to consider when looking at the latest form of social networking, but it can also be a world filled with many negatives. You can use websites like Facebook to launch a new business idea, sell products or services, and extend the reach of your brand. These platforms can also become an inescapable place where peer pressure can push people toward choices they would never make without its influence.

We look at brands like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram for social networking today, but this communications tool has been everywhere since the early 2000s. Six Degrees earns recognition as being the first official site, founded in 1997 by Andrew Weinreich, with a peak of 1 million members. People were going into AOL chat rooms before then. Friendster then emerged in 2002, a year before LinkedIn, to set the stage for what we see today.

The pros and cons of social networking are often more about your priorities when using it and the pages and people with whom you choose to interact. How can you take advantage of these critical viewpoints today?

List of the Pros of Social Networking

1. Social networking gives you a chance to connect with people around the world. One of the most obvious advantages of using social networking is the opportunity these websites provide you to reach people from anywhere in the world. As long as there is a connection to the Internet and a profile created, you can become “friends” or a “follower” of someone and check-in with them at any point in time.

Some people use Facebook to stay in touch with family, talk to old high school friends, and share their political feelings. Twitter is a micro-blogging platform that is used for comedy, current events, and general observation. You can even connect with people from places you’ve never seen or heard of before.

2. This technology gives us access to easy, instant communication tools. Social networking gives us the chance to stay connected with one another wherever we happen to go. You don’t need to have access to a landline to call someone with this technology today. Sending a letter through the traditional mail seems like an eternity. Forget about answering machines or voicemail – just leave a comment on someone’s page and they’ll get a notification about it immediately.

When we stay connected to social networking, then all we need to do is pick up our smartphone, boot up the computer, or open the laptop to start communicating with someone. You can even use an app that connects to your profile to take advantage of these benefits no matter where you are in the world.

3. Information happens in real-time blocks on social networks. Before the Internet came around, we all had to wait for the daily newspaper or the news broadcasts on television to know what was going on in the world that day. Even when cable news came around to give us 24/7 access to stories, we had to sit, watch, and wait for the stories we wanted to see. Thanks to social networking, one simple search is all that is necessary to access the current events notifications that we want to see.

You can even go a step further and set alerts through your social networking profile so that you receive notifications when a specific page has new information to review. This process allows you to customize your news feed, allowing the information discovery experience to follow the exact path you want.

4. Social networking creates brand exposure for businesses. Any type of professional organization can use their social networking presence to connect with their current and future customers. Most platforms allow businesses to sell their products, either directly on the social media site or through a link to the company’s sales page. This process makes it easier to expand the reach of a company through the use of these one-to-one connections that are possible.

There are numerous small businesses and entrepreneurs who have thriving companies today which survive almost entirely on what they can create through a social network. Some of the brands would be unable to operate without it.

5. Being on a social network is a lot of fun. The average person in the United States spends between 35 to 45 minutes every day on their favorite social networks. Some might call this behavior an addiction, but it wouldn’t be that way if people weren’t having fun checking in with others or staying up-to-date on the latest news and information. Humans are naturally social creatures, so it feels satisfying to have likes, hearts, or comments left on a posit. You can create friendly conversations in the comfort of home while seeing what everyone is doing without needing to ask them.

6. Social networks are a useful law enforcement tool. 73% of law enforcement officials in the United States say that they believe social networking sites help them to solve crimes with more speed. 85% of the police departments in the U.S. use social media to investigate local offenses. It is a tool that helps officers track down and arrest those who brag about their crimes online. This advantage has led to numerous prosecutions, including hate crimes, and identified multiple people in videos where inappropriate actions occur so that the proper charges can be brought against them.

7. This tool can help students perform better at school. About 3 out of every 5 students say that they use social media to discuss educational topics if they have access to the Internet. Half of students say that they talk about their school assignments with their friends thanks to the tools offered by these platforms. George Middle School, which is located in Portland, OR, introduce social networking programs to engage their students and found a 50% increase in grades. There were also declines of chronic absences and an increase in the voluntary extra-credit.

8. Social networking helps people who are shy or socially isolated to connect with others. About 1 in 4 teens say that their experiences on social media have helped them to feel less shy when interacting with others in real life. Almost 30% of the young people in that group say that these encounters help them to feel more outgoing, while 1 in 5 say that their confidence got a boost.

Some kids, teens, and young adults are not as socially adept as others, which is where the anonymity of social networking can help. This online resource gives them an opportunity to feel more comfortable, become vocal, and practice interactions with other people in a way that creates a safety net for them.

9. The elderly can feel more connected to society because of social media. The Pew Research Center conducted a study in 2015 to see how senior citizens felt about the use of social media. For those in the 65 and older age demographic, which is one of the fastest growing groups on social networks, they felt happier because of the online contacts that were available to them because of this technology. They could talk to their family, see pictures and video of their grandchildren, or access the bulletin from their church.

Only 2% of senior citizens were using social networking in 2008. That figure climbed to 35% by 2015 because of this unique advantage.

List of the Cons of Social Networking

1. Social networking exposes us to a lot of information. When social networks first started, the platforms became a place of meaningful connection. You would share videos, photographs, and letters with the essential people in your life. Now that there are millions (and sometimes billions) of people on a platform, there can be a lot of white noise that drowns out these conversations. Between the political arguments, posted selfies, shared links, and brand videos that enter the average news feed every day, it becomes pretty overwhelming to have all of this information at a glance.

Most people tend to create bloated news feeds with a collected group of friends and followers that contains irrelevant content. It becomes a challenge to stay connected with people because you might lose their conversations in the blizzard of data that social networks have become.

2. There are privacy issues to consider with social networks. Because there is so much data sharing happening with the modern social network, the amount of privacy that we have for the average person is shrinking a little bit every day. The user agreements that you agree to follow when signing up for this service might even create a license which allows the platform to use your content without attribution – including your pictures.

You might become a target if you share your current location over social media. Your employer can choose to fire you if they disagree with something that you shared over your network. If you share too much with the public, there could be problems that develop which will never resolve as the information releases.

3. Cyberbullying and peer pressure are significant issues. If you struggle to fit in with your group of peers, then you might feel some pressure to behave or communicate in specific ways to feel accepted. This disadvantage tends to impact teens and young adults the most, but it can also influence anyone. It is not unusual for the negative behaviors to be worse online than at school or work because bullies feel like they can be anonymous when sitting behind a screen or using a smartphone.

In extreme cases of this disadvantage, the bullying and negative comments that occur over social networking can lead to anxiety, depression-like symptoms, and high levels of stress. Cyberbullying makes teens and young adults twice as likely to attempt suicide or attempt to harm themselves in other ways.

“Prevention of cyberbullying should be included in school anti-bullying policies, alongside broader concepts such as digital citizenship, online peer support for victims, and how an electronic bystander might appropriately intervene,” Professor Ann John, of Swansea University Medical School, told The Telegraph. “Suicide prevention and intervention is essential within any comprehensive anti-bullying program and should incorporate a whole-school approach to include awareness raising and training for staff and pupils.”

4. Some people substitute online interactions for their offline relationships. Our constant connections with one another create a change in how we approach our relationships. You can pull up the social profile of a friend with a simple tap or click. Then you can message that person, leave a comment, or like one of their posts. We often substitute these actions for the face-to-face conversations we used to have, which reduces the number of social skills that we can use outside of the digital realm. Because of this disadvantage, some critics of social networking would say that our activities promote anti-social behavior more than it encourages new connections.

5. Social networking can become a severe distraction for some people. When someone becomes distracted by the information available through social media, it can take them up to 25 minutes to become focused on their original task. Do you check your phone when you wake up in the morning? How often do you scroll through Facebook or Instagram? The time spent on these platforms, along with the time it takes to recover from the distraction, can cost you up to 70 hours of productive time per month.

There are some ways that you can limit this disadvantage. Start by turning off notifications on your phone and in your browser. Talk with people instead of pulling out a device to chat on an app. Then give yourself specific times during the day where you check on your profile and news feed instead of going to it multiple times per day.

6. It can disrupt your sleep cycle. When you expose your brain to electronics, then it can change the emphasis of your mind from wanting to go to sleep to staying engaged with social media. The blue light spectrum from some devices can be stimulating as well, but the danger with this disadvantage is that you’ll start to think more about what other people are doing or the information on your profile instead of trying to get some rest.

7. Using social networking all of the time can lead to a sedentary lifestyle. Because social networking typically happens on a mobile device or a computer, it can promote the habit of sitting down in a single spot for too long during the day. Some people check their feeds when they exercise, but it happens more often when there are quiet moments that feel boring. If you’re using social media for 70 minutes every day in a seated position, then this habit can start to create changes that lead you toward a sedentary lifestyle.

8. Social networking can spread false or unreliable information quickly. When traditional media reporters were polled about their use of social media, over 78% of them said that they used their platforms to check for breaking news. The problem with this habit is that there tends to be a lack of fact verification before the sharing process happens. People tend to want news that conforms with their beliefs instead of the data being a direct observation of current events.

News items that contain inaccuracies spread six times faster on Twitter than articles that contain the truth. Fake news items receive more shares and retweets than true stories. It is up to each of us to verify the information that we share to avoid this disadvantage.

9. Students who use social networking too often have lower grades. About one-third of students say that they are on social media while studying or doing their homework in ways that are not educationally productive. This activity reduces the quality of their work, which often leads to lower grades. Non-users of social networking averaged a GPA of 3.82 in the United States, while those who continued to use Facebook and similar sites had an average GPA of 3.06.

Students who use social media sites while studying score up to 20% lower on their tests compared to non-users. For young adults in college or at a university, their grades drop 0.12 points for every 90 minutes they spend on networking sites each day. Four hours of screen time is enough for a student to drop a full grade.

10. Social media creates more time wasting opportunities throughout the day. Internet users between the ages of 16-64 said that they spend about 1.7 hours every day on their various social media sites. That accounts for about 30% of the total amount of time that they spend online each day. One-third of those who were surveyed said that their networking activities were the biggest waste of time in their day, ranking it above watching television, playing fantasy sports, and shopping.

11. The use of social networking is correlated with brain and personality disorders. Research from the University of Pittsburgh finds that the use of social networking sites creates a significant increase in depression and depression-like symptoms for adults between the ages of 19-32. The addictive qualities of these platforms can lead to an enhancement or increase in narcissistic behaviors and personality traits. It may lead to hyperactivity behaviors, resistance to authority figures, and general inattention as well.

12. It can be more difficult to find a job with your social media presence. Not only can you lose a job because of what you decide to share on social networks, but you can also find it more challenging to be offered a position in the first place. Job recruiters and human resource managers say that references to illegal drugs, sexualized content, poor grammar and spelling, and profanity all have a significantly negative impact on their perspective of a potential recruit. Firearms and alcohol are potential red flags on a profile as well.

Up to 55% of recruiters today say that they consider hiring an applicant based on what they can see of their social media activities.

Verdict on the Pros and Cons of Social Networking

Social networking gives us an opportunity to quickly disseminate essential information to the general public. The Department of Veterans Affairs uses this tool as a way to help prevent suicide attempts in veterans’ groups after they return from active combat. The World Health Organization used it to combat the spread of false information after the 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan where people were encouraging the ingestion of salt to fight off the effects of radiation.

We can use social media to disarm social stigmas. It helps us to stay connected with each other, learn about current events, and share the good things about our lives.

The pros and cons of social networking also show us that it can be used to spread hate and bully others. There are about 10,000 tweets every day which contain racial slurs. It can create echo chambers where followers reinforce extreme propaganda within their group, which can lead to radicalization over time. It can also lead to social isolation. That’s why we must make healthy choices when using this technology.

Social networking can be used for good just as easily as it can be used to harm others.

Since the invention of social media, many people have been better able to connect with each other and also to keep up to date with the lives of their friends, families, co-workers and even celebrities, to such a degree which was previously impossible.

However, social media has its risks. As people of all ages have access to social media, children can be exposed to adult content, and are themselves vulnerable to be approached by strangers with unknown intentions. Even if children are sure of who they’re talking to on social media, social media’s issues are not completely eliminated. Cyber bullying is frequently reported in the news, and occurs on social media between children and schoolchildren. This is problematic, as it means even when children are at home, remote from their bullies they can still be bullied when they’re inside their own homes.

Social media can be problematic for adults, too. People often feel comfortable posting things on social media that they wouldn’t say in real life. This can indirectly cause a bad impression on other people, and if employers judge the nature of the content prospective employees post on social media to be inappropriate, it can affect their chances of attaining or keeping jobs.

As long as people are aware of the risks of using social media, and are careful to post only respectful and respectable content, then the advantages of social media far outweigh the disadvantages, and children and adults alike should be allowed to benefit from such technology.

There are pros and cons of using social media

However, there are some disadvantages of using social networks.

Social networks have become the essential part of private and professional life of many people all over the world. Research shows that the most popular sites worldwide are Facebook with 2.38 billion monthly active users, You Tube (2 billion users),WhatsApp (1.6 billion users). Six-ranked photo-sharing app Instagram has 1 billion monthly active accounts. About 2 billion Internet users are using social networks and these figures are expected to grow. The majority of social networks with 100 mln. users originated in America.

One of the most obvious benefits of using social networks is that you can keep in touch with your friends easily, quickly and cheaply. Besides, it’s a good way of making new acquaintances, communicating with people from different countries, discussing various topics, sharing photos and videos. Apart from this, many people use combined profiles in social media for business and private networking. Also, social networks give a great opportunity for many companies to make a market research and to   develop new products   and services. Monitoring social media you get direct and fast access to your customers’ interests, opinions and problems. Social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are excellent ways to communicate with customers. Some large international companies are working with project wikis, project blogs and have global virtual teams. They are already using file sharing, collaborative platforms for project teams. Social media are a platform for podcasts and webinars to show your customers how your product works. What is more, finding a job has become easier because employers update pages with the job descriptions and candidates can apply online.

One negative aspect lies in the fact that some teenagers spend so much time online. As a result of it , children suffer from the lack of live communication. They can become Internet addicts. Cyberbullying is a serious problem. According to statistics, about 37% of teenagers between the ages12 and 17 have been bullied online, most of them on the platform of Instagram. The people who experience cyberbullying are at a great risk for suicidal behavior.

Another problem is connected with hackers. They can get into our computers and use personal information for identity theft. We are worried by increasing cases of fraud. Scams are prevalent on popular social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. That is why it is highly recommended not to include your personal data such as your home address or phone number into your public profile. You should check and regularly update privacy settings on your social media accounts.

All in all, we cannot disagree with the fact that social networks made our lives much easier. However, I think that social media will never replace real-life communication. I am convinced that blended networking, the combination of on-line and offline networking, is the way forward.

I agree with the statement: “People should lift their heads from their computer and phone screens and start living life”.

August's Last Social Security Check Is on the Way. Here's When You'll Get It

The last round of Social Security payments are on their way. Here's when they'll arrive.

cash-money-stack-100s-yellowblue-grid.png

August's Social Security payments are on their way. Here's when you'll get yours.

The last round of Social Security checks for August will be headed to recipients in just a few days. This month's payment schedule was slightly different than typical, but next week's check should be sent at the standard time. Below is the full schedule so you can know when to expect yours. If you're still waiting on your check from July, check out  why it may not have arrived and what you can do about it .

CNET Money Tips logo

While The Social Security Administration sends out checks monthly and your check will arrive at the same time every month, not everyone gets their checks on the same day.

Instead, Social Security checks are scheduled based on date of the month you were born and when you started receiving benefits.

Read on to find out if you should expect to receive your check this week, how your payment date is determined by the Social Security Administration and other government benefit payment dates. For more, find out how to apply for Social Security benefits and what the experts predict the 2025 COLA will be .

When will I get my Social Security check?

Want to know which day of the month you'll get your check? Here's the Social Security and SSDI payment schedule for August.

Smart Money Advice on the Topics That Matter to You

Social security payment schedule august 2024.

How is the Social Security payment date determined?

Social Security payments are typically paid out starting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The remaining two payments will be paid out on the following two Wednesdays of the month. Which week you receive your payment depends on your birthdate. There is one big exception, which I'll cover below.

August 2
If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of any given month August 14
If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of any given month August 21
If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of any given month August 28

Will I receive my other government benefits on the same day?

If you've received Social Security benefits before May 1997, or receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, your payment schedule isn't determined by your birthdate. Instead, payments are paid out every month on the same date with a couple of exceptions that I'll explain below.

Social Security payments will be sent out on the 3rd of each month, while SSI payments are sent out on the 1st of each month. These dates will sometimes change if the 1st or the 3rd of the month falls on a weekend or holiday. For instance, March 3 fell on a weekend, so Social Security recipients received their March payments two days early, on March 1. The same will happen in the month of November.

The only benefits that are paid on the same schedule are Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance.

Didn't receive your Social Security check? Start here.

If your check doesn't show up when it's supposed to or at all , the Social Security Administration suggests waiting for three additional mailing days before contacting it. After that, you can call the national toll-free number: 1-800-772-1213

The SSA notes that "wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter in the morning, later in the week and later in the month."

If you're having trouble getting ahold of the SSA through the national number, you can use their office locator to find a local office to reach out to.

Fact-checking warnings from Democrats about Project 2025 and Donald Trump

This fact check originally appeared on PolitiFact .

Project 2025 has a starring role in this week’s Democratic National Convention.

And it was front and center on Night 1.

WATCH: Hauling large copy of Project 2025, Michigan state Sen. McMorrow speaks at 2024 DNC

“This is Project 2025,” Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, D-Royal Oak, said as she laid a hardbound copy of the 900-page document on the lectern. “Over the next four nights, you are going to hear a lot about what is in this 900-page document. Why? Because this is the Republican blueprint for a second Trump term.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has warned Americans about “Trump’s Project 2025” agenda — even though former President Donald Trump doesn’t claim the conservative presidential transition document.

“Donald Trump wants to take our country backward,” Harris said July 23 in Milwaukee. “He and his extreme Project 2025 agenda will weaken the middle class. Like, we know we got to take this seriously, and can you believe they put that thing in writing?”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, has joined in on the talking point.

“Don’t believe (Trump) when he’s playing dumb about this Project 2025. He knows exactly what it’ll do,” Walz said Aug. 9 in Glendale, Arizona.

Trump’s campaign has worked to build distance from the project, which the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, led with contributions from dozens of conservative groups.

Much of the plan calls for extensive executive-branch overhauls and draws on both long-standing conservative principles, such as tax cuts, and more recent culture war issues. It lays out recommendations for disbanding the Commerce and Education departments, eliminating certain climate protections and consolidating more power to the president.

Project 2025 offers a sweeping vision for a Republican-led executive branch, and some of its policies mirror Trump’s 2024 agenda, But Harris and her presidential campaign have at times gone too far in describing what the project calls for and how closely the plans overlap with Trump’s campaign.

PolitiFact researched Harris’ warnings about how the plan would affect reproductive rights, federal entitlement programs and education, just as we did for President Joe Biden’s Project 2025 rhetoric. Here’s what the project does and doesn’t call for, and how it squares with Trump’s positions.

Are Trump and Project 2025 connected?

To distance himself from Project 2025 amid the Democratic attacks, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he “knows nothing” about it and has “no idea” who is in charge of it. (CNN identified at least 140 former advisers from the Trump administration who have been involved.)

The Heritage Foundation sought contributions from more than 100 conservative organizations for its policy vision for the next Republican presidency, which was published in 2023.

Project 2025 is now winding down some of its policy operations, and director Paul Dans, a former Trump administration official, is stepping down, The Washington Post reported July 30. Trump campaign managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita denounced the document.

WATCH: A look at the Project 2025 plan to reshape government and Trump’s links to its authors

However, Project 2025 contributors include a number of high-ranking officials from Trump’s first administration, including former White House adviser Peter Navarro and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.

A recently released recording of Russell Vought, a Project 2025 author and the former director of Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, showed Vought saying Trump’s “very supportive of what we do.” He said Trump was only distancing himself because Democrats were making a bogeyman out of the document.

Project 2025 wouldn’t ban abortion outright, but would curtail access

The Harris campaign shared a graphic on X that claimed “Trump’s Project 2025 plan for workers” would “go after birth control and ban abortion nationwide.”

The plan doesn’t call to ban abortion nationwide, though its recommendations could curtail some contraceptives and limit abortion access.

What’s known about Trump’s abortion agenda neither lines up with Harris’ description nor Project 2025’s wish list.

Project 2025 says the Department of Health and Human Services Department should “return to being known as the Department of Life by explicitly rejecting the notion that abortion is health care.”

It recommends that the Food and Drug Administration reverse its 2000 approval of mifepristone, the first pill taken in a two-drug regimen for a medication abortion. Medication is the most common form of abortion in the U.S. — accounting for around 63 percent in 2023.

If mifepristone were to remain approved, Project 2025 recommends new rules, such as cutting its use from 10 weeks into pregnancy to seven. It would have to be provided to patients in person — part of the group’s efforts to limit access to the drug by mail. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a legal challenge to mifepristone’s FDA approval over procedural grounds.

WATCH: Trump’s plans for health care and reproductive rights if he returns to White House The manual also calls for the Justice Department to enforce the 1873 Comstock Act on mifepristone, which bans the mailing of “obscene” materials. Abortion access supporters fear that a strict interpretation of the law could go further to ban mailing the materials used in procedural abortions, such as surgical instruments and equipment.

The plan proposes withholding federal money from states that don’t report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention how many abortions take place within their borders. The plan also would prohibit abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, from receiving Medicaid funds. It also calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that the training of medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, omits abortion training.

The document says some forms of emergency contraception — particularly Ella, a pill that can be taken within five days of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy — should be excluded from no-cost coverage. The Affordable Care Act requires most private health insurers to cover recommended preventive services, which involves a range of birth control methods, including emergency contraception.

Trump has recently said states should decide abortion regulations and that he wouldn’t block access to contraceptives. Trump said during his June 27 debate with Biden that he wouldn’t ban mifepristone after the Supreme Court “approved” it. But the court rejected the lawsuit based on standing, not the case’s merits. He has not weighed in on the Comstock Act or said whether he supports it being used to block abortion medication, or other kinds of abortions.

Project 2025 doesn’t call for cutting Social Security, but proposes some changes to Medicare

“When you read (Project 2025),” Harris told a crowd July 23 in Wisconsin, “you will see, Donald Trump intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.”

The Project 2025 document does not call for Social Security cuts. None of its 10 references to Social Security addresses plans for cutting the program.

Harris also misleads about Trump’s Social Security views.

In his earlier campaigns and before he was a politician, Trump said about a half-dozen times that he’s open to major overhauls of Social Security, including cuts and privatization. More recently, in a March 2024 CNBC interview, Trump said of entitlement programs such as Social Security, “There’s a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.” However, he quickly walked that statement back, and his CNBC comment stands at odds with essentially everything else Trump has said during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump’s campaign website says that not “a single penny” should be cut from Social Security. We rated Harris’ claim that Trump intends to cut Social Security Mostly False.

Project 2025 does propose changes to Medicare, including making Medicare Advantage, the private insurance offering in Medicare, the “default” enrollment option. Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans have provider networks and can also require prior authorization, meaning that the plan can approve or deny certain services. Original Medicare plans don’t have prior authorization requirements.

The manual also calls for repealing health policies enacted under Biden, such as the Inflation Reduction Act. The law enabled Medicare to negotiate with drugmakers for the first time in history, and recently resulted in an agreement with drug companies to lower the prices of 10 expensive prescriptions for Medicare enrollees.

Trump, however, has said repeatedly during the 2024 presidential campaign that he will not cut Medicare.

Project 2025 would eliminate the Education Department, which Trump supports

The Harris campaign said Project 2025 would “eliminate the U.S. Department of Education” — and that’s accurate. Project 2025 says federal education policy “should be limited and, ultimately, the federal Department of Education should be eliminated.” The plan scales back the federal government’s role in education policy and devolves the functions that remain to other agencies.

Aside from eliminating the department, the project also proposes scrapping the Biden administration’s Title IX revision, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It also would let states opt out of federal education programs and calls for passing a federal parents’ bill of rights similar to ones passed in some Republican-led state legislatures.

Republicans, including Trump, have pledged to close the department, which gained its status in 1979 within Democratic President Jimmy Carter’s presidential Cabinet.

In one of his Agenda 47 policy videos, Trump promised to close the department and “to send all education work and needs back to the states.” Eliminating the department would have to go through Congress.

What Project 2025, Trump would do on overtime pay

In the graphic, the Harris campaign says Project 2025 allows “employers to stop paying workers for overtime work.”

The plan doesn’t call for banning overtime wages. It recommends changes to some Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, regulations and to overtime rules. Some changes, if enacted, could result in some people losing overtime protections, experts told us.

The document proposes that the Labor Department maintain an overtime threshold “that does not punish businesses in lower-cost regions (e.g., the southeast United States).” This threshold is the amount of money executive, administrative or professional employees need to make for an employer to exempt them from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

In 2019, the Trump’s administration finalized a rule that expanded overtime pay eligibility to most salaried workers earning less than about $35,568, which it said made about 1.3 million more workers eligible for overtime pay. The Trump-era threshold is high enough to cover most line workers in lower-cost regions, Project 2025 said.

The Biden administration raised that threshold to $43,888 beginning July 1, and that will rise to $58,656 on Jan. 1, 2025. That would grant overtime eligibility to about 4 million workers, the Labor Department said.

It’s unclear how many workers Project 2025’s proposal to return to the Trump-era overtime threshold in some parts of the country would affect, but experts said some would presumably lose the right to overtime wages.

Other overtime proposals in Project 2025’s plan include allowing some workers to choose to accumulate paid time off instead of overtime pay, or to work more hours in one week and fewer in the next, rather than receive overtime.

Trump’s past with overtime pay is complicated. In 2016, the Obama administration said it would raise the overtime to salaried workers earning less than $47,476 a year, about double the exemption level set in 2004 of $23,660 a year.

But when a judge blocked the Obama rule, the Trump administration didn’t challenge the court ruling. Instead it set its own overtime threshold, which raised the amount, but by less than Obama.

As with the earlier conferences, we aim to bring together scholars working on comparative, economic, social, global, and other types of history and related social sciences to address various “East-West” historical processes and events as well as comparative and transnational analysis, including at the Baltic region, Europe, and the world. Potential topics include but are not limited to trade, migration, comparative development, international political economy and the diffusion and transplantation of institutions, ideas and cultural influences. We hope to promote interdisciplinary encounters and discussions, with the goal of bringing together scholars working in Western, Nordic, Central and East European, Baltic, and other universities. We are open to proposals that incorporate new digital technologies and ideas for roundtables. This year’s conference will also be a formal pre-conference host for the 2025 World Economic History Congress to be held in Lund, Sweden. We particularly welcome panel proposals for single or double sessions which are also planned for the World Congress. Please note this somewhere in the proposal.

The sixth Riitta Hjerppe Lecture in Social Science History will be given by Gregory Clark (University of Southern Denmark) Additional plenary sessions will be delivered by Ann-Kristin Bergquist (Uppsala University), and Mirva Peltoniemi (Tampere University). More information can be found at the following website: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/conferences/baltic-connections

The deadline for proposals is February 15, 2025. In addition to individual papers, proposals for whole three to four paper panels are also appreciated. The participants will be notified of acceptance by March 15 at the latest. To be fully considered, please include a main contact person and their email, plus the names, affiliations, and emails for all the participants (including coauthors who may not be planning to attend). Proposals for papers should be up to 500 words and for panels, a panel description of up to 500 words plus a listing of papers and/or presenters with brief, 150-word individual paper abstracts. The Scandinavian Economic History Review is offering a special fast-track consideration. Please specify that you would like to be considered for this in the text of the email and in the proposal.

The conference hosts a session track on History of Technology and Industry organized by the Finnish Society for the History of Technology. The session track accepts paper and session proposals about all aspects of history of technology and industry but focuses especially on the theme of transnational and regional histories in the Nordic and Baltic areas. Moreover, the Finnish Quarterly for History of Technology, Tekniikan Waiheita , also offers conference participants the possibility to submit their papers for fast-track consideration in the journal.

The conference will be held in-person, and we cannot guarantee a hybrid option for participation. Conference fees will be 170 euros for full registration and 80 euros for graduate students. The organizing institutions consist of University of Helsinki, University of Jyväskylä, the Finnish Society for the History of Technology, and the Finnish Economic History Association. 5 Takeaways from the ‘Love Island U.S.A.’ Season 6 Reunion

After a chaotic and fun season, even more drama unfolded on social media in the weeks that followed. This Peacock special broke everything down.

This summer’s season of “Love Island U.S.A.” has been the most popular of the franchise so far. And, if it feels like everyone is talking about it, it’s because they probably are — during the second week of July, this show was the most watched streaming original series in the U.S. , according to Luminate, an entertainment data tracking service. That means it outranked “The Bear.”

Because of the season’s popularity, it made sense for the show to have its first ever reunion special. Hosted by Ariana Madix, whose training included being grilled by Andy Cohen during her many “Vanderpump Rules” reunions, the show featured 25 Islanders — both OGs and Casa Amor — discussing not only what went on during the season but also all the messy drama that has unfolded on social media in the weeks after the show aired.

Here are the five biggest takeaways from the reunion.

Full footage of the firepit vote between Serena Page, Olivia Walker, Leah Kateb and Kaylor Martin is revealed.

One of the biggest and longest running dramas in the villa this season had to do with the dumping of Andrea Carmona. At the time, Carmona was coupled up with Rob Rausch, who had just gotten out of a couple with Leah Kateb.

A handful of the women in the villa had to decide whom to dump between Carmona, Nicole Jacky or JaNa Craig.

The decision to send Carmona home caused many fights, including one during which Martin and Walker told Rausch that Kateb had been the one pushing to send Carmona home — and this information discouraged Rausch from recoupling with Kateb. Kateb maintained that she “tried to take a back seat” in the decision making.

Throughout and following the season, viewers asked on social media why the show didn’t just air the entire unedited footage of the four women making the decision, instead of allowing a seemingly endless “he-said-she-said.”
