How to Deliver A Winning Vote of Thanks Every time!

The vote of thanks…why can’t you just get it right?

Recently I went to a function and I was really impressed by the speeches. 

Well…almost.

The introduction was extremely well-delivered and presented the guest speaker as just the right person to deliver this particular speech.

The guest speaker held the audience’s attention like the expert speaker she is. Her ideas were refreshing. She was humorous and the audience could relate to her examples and analogies. It was clear that the organisers knew how to get the best out of a guest speaker. 

Then there was the vote of thanks speech.  

I know vote of thanks for guest speakers are usually bad. But I was obviously lulled into a state of false expectancy by the speeches that went before this one.

As bad vote of thanks speeches go, it was bang on the money. I mean, it was the worse I had heard for a long time!

It seems that the speaker was sitting in the audience, minding his business, when all of a sudden the organisers stuck a gun in his back and forced him to deliver that speech!

So, I’m asking, “What’s with you and the vote of thanks, guys”? 

Why do you make it the worse speech on the program 7 times out of 10?

And why do you so often make it almost as long as the main speech?

You don’t have a “vote of thanks model?”

Well, I am declaring “ENOUGH!”

I’m pulling out all the stops.

I’m reaching into my background as a trained Public Speaker, an experienced Facilitator and an unwilling listener of bad vote of thanks to help you out.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how to give a super vote of thanks, even a funny vote of thanks, one that will not only delight your audience but will ramp-up your credibility as a speaker.

So let’s dive right in…

What you should know about a vote of thanks 

First of all, it is usually a short, formal speech. It is delivered on behalf of an organisation or a business at the end of an event, to thank those who have organized and or participated in that event. 

As a result you can find them at the end of events like:

• graduations
• farewell ceremonies
• conferences, seminars and workshops
• fairly formal meetings
• (and I wish) funerals
• You can even give a vote of thanks for a webinar speaker

What this means is, that to avoid bringing down an otherwise great program and to make your guest speaker feel special, you just have to learn how to do them properly, as I mention in point #8 of this post.

But here’s what standing in your way. 

You can’t (shouldn’t) write your vote of thanks speech out, three days in advance, practice it and then come to event and deliver it.

That works for the other type of speeches but for a vote of thanks, it’s the foundation for a crash landing.

On the other hand, if you can come to the event early, listen carefully and keep your wits about you, you can deliver a memorable speech that the organisers will thank you for. You don’t want to miss such an opportunity, do you?

And you dare not forget that the vote of thanks is a speech. (That does not mean you should go looking for examples of vote of thanks speeches.)

It means, as I tell my participants in my presentation workshops or coaching, like all good speeches it should have  have an opening or introduction, a body or discussion part and a conclusion or ending.

I make this point because it seems that people generally believe that unless you’re delivering a big, sexy feature address, you don’t have to pay too much attention to arranging it.  

But you’re wrong.

And learning how to speak impromptu and understanding why public speaking is so important to nearly everything you do won’t hurt either.

So…let me break it down for you, may I?

How to begin your vote of thanks 

If i tell you that it’s a speech, then it follows that the opening must be hot enough to capture the attention of the audience..

To achieve this, you can use humour, a quotation, refer to the circumstance of the event or any of the myriad of effective ways to begin a speech.

For example:

“According to Saint Ambrose, who lived many years ago: “No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks” so I’m delighted to have been given the pleasant duty of delivering the vote of thanks this evening…”

“The only people with whom you should try to get even are those who have helped you.”  Madam Chair, those words were attributed to John E. Southard and I use them now to “get even” by thanking a number of people who have helped us with this event…”

Now that you know what to do…

Here’s what you should NOT do: 

•    Use an apologetic opening statement
•    Tell a story or joke that does not relate to the topic
•    Begin with a long, slow-moving statement
•    Ask a trite or boring question 

Nail the body or middle of your vote of thanks   

Just like any other speech, the body of a vote of thanks is the main part of the speech.

It is also the place where you will find the best opportunities to foul up. So let me help you avoid them.

Start by saying on whose behalf you are speaking

You are speaking on behalf of your organisation or business and on your own behalf. If you must leave out any part of this, leave out yourself.

For Example: 

Following on from any of the introductions above, you can move smartly into the body of your speech by saying something like:

“On behalf of the Association of Female High-end Car Owners, and on my own behalf, I would like to thank…”

Hit the audience with a three-prong attack

Yeah…Do try to sound spontaneous, enthusiastic and genuine…

To pull off these three things with class, you need to do two things:

First, you need to understand why you and your organisation should be thankful.

A whole lot of people would have worked really hard over a period of time to make the event happen. Everybody, including you, should be feeling a deep sense of gratitude towards them. In reality, you are only the mouthpiece expressing this gratitude. Therefore, we should hear it in your voice and see it in your body language.

Second and more importantly…

Ignore the wonderful advice I gave about how to practice your speech in this post . While I am providing you with a template for a great vote of thanks, most of the details will be filled in by you at the event.

Just imagine this: you write your vote of thanks, you practice it at home, your dog loves it and you bring it to the function…and several things on the programme have changed. But you happily deliver it, just as you practiced at home…

Wuhloss! even thinking about that has me hiding under a table in my mind, holding all your embarrassment in my handbag.

Don’t pretend your vote of thanks is a filibuster

Be brief, your speech should be no longer than 2 – 4 minutes. 

Yes, I am serious. Everybody else has already spoken, so it’s too late for a filibuster.

Understand the mindset of your audience at this point in the program.

They recognize that the vote of thanks signals the end of the event. And if the caterers are well-known for mouth-watering food, that’s where their minds will be.  Not on another 7 – 10 minute speech.

Be sure to thank the right person(s)

This should be obvious but only recently, a mistake like this took centre-stage at an event I attended. 

  At the last-minute, the person originally delivering the feature address could not attend. Since no one told the person moving the vote of thanks and since she was working primarily behind the scenes…you can guess what happened.

As you can imagine, nearly everyone (none under the pressure of working hard and then having to deliver a speech!) knew she was an idiot from as far back as high school.

Catch yourself asking “What’s in a name?”

When you get the persons right, then you must get their names right.

Local folklore in my country has it that a popular and conscientious Police Officer once arrested a thief on Synagogue Lane. Being unable to spell or pronounce “Synagogue” he dragged him by the collar on to “Broad Street” and arrested him there!

You do not have that option. You cannot call people a name you can pronounce as you thank them.

So before the event begins, ask the key people if the spelling of their names on the programme is correct and how it is pronounced.

Use the programme as a guide to the “order of thanking”

A good guide as to the order in which you should thank people, is the programme. It also helps to prevent you from leaving out anybody.  

If there are just a few items on the programme:

Thank all the speakers/performers individually. A word of caution: this does NOT include the choir.

If there are several items on the programme:

Divide the speakers/performers into groups and thank each group. This includes the choir.

The jury is still out on the supporting acts

Should you thank persons who are not on the program b ut have contributed to the event?

This is often hotly debated and for good reason.

I don’t mean to be unkind, but sometimes, persons really reach too far back to thank such persons, though.

I am in a place in my mind where I will not be surprised if one day, someone thanks the mother of the caterer for giving birth to him or her. The baby sitters of the cleaners for so lovingly helping to mind her children as she worked. Or even  the car dealer who leased the clown the car that brought him there.

You should acknowledge them as a group “too numerous to mention” and in this way, you will not offend anybody.  

How do you handle the Guest Speaker’s speech?

This is usually easy to do.

Guest speakers are invited to events because it is anticipated that they have something to say that’s at least useful and at best inspiring. 

When this is the case, compliment the content and or the quality of speech. Do NOT thank them for the time they took to prepare the speech. (You’ll see why shortly.)

Try to mention one or two points you found particularly interesting, especially if you’re giving a vote of thanks for a guest lecturer…This is also the epitome of proper etiquette since it signals to the speaker you were listening.

For Example:

“I especially would like to thank Ms. Barrow for her entertaining but forthright speech. I especially appreciate that she called us out for not adequately training and coaching our supervisors but at the same time, showed us an easy way to do this.”

What if the Guest Speaker lets you down?

We have all seen it…the guest speaker tanks.

When this happens, what is the poor person delivering the vote of thanks to do?

Just thank the guest speaker for the time they took to prepare and deliver the speech. Lying about how great the speech was, is not one of your options.

That’s why you save the “thank you for the time…” line for feature speeches that are not all that good.

You can get the ending of your vote of  thanks wrong 

Perhaps you’re now thinking: really Lorna, you mean I can even mess up the ending?!

I’m not answering, you will just have to read on to find out…

Just like how your vote of thanks has a proper opening, you must bring it to a proper close. You may choose any of the many ways you can end any other speech. But just remember these critical points about ending the vote of thanks:

It is NOT the time – to take the speaker to task for something he might have said that you did not agree with. Please!

It is NOT the opportunity – to put forward your own view on the subject that the speaker discussed. This is just plain rude.

It is the time – to bring your speech smartly to a close with a call for a round of applause from the audience for the people whom you have just thanked.

The next time you have to deliver a vote of thanks…

You will nail it like a boss!

You now know almost as much as I know about delivering a vote of thanks.

I can’t imagine why you would still want to be counted among those who are delivering bad vote of thanks…And if you’re still afraid of public speaking, here’s some help for you…

Oh…and just remember that VOT on the programmes stands for Vote of Thanks!

The first time I saw it, I did not realise what it stood for, and when I asked…even now as I tell you, I still want to go into a hole in the ground.

Also remember, even though a VOT (oops!) vote of thanks is essentially a short speech, if you can nail it , a winning vote of thanks can establish your speaking credibility!

A well-informed speech in which the speaker expresses appreciation to the host, organizer, and other attendees is known as a vote of thanks speech. Without individuals who invest their time and resources to make sure that everything is perfect, no event can be successful. Every event or ceremony must have it because it has a significant impact on the function. We will learn how to deliver a good vote of thanks speech in this article. Speaking in public for the first time can be challenging, and new speakers occasionally experience anxiety before speaking. This speech will help you to pay you thanks to all people. It will also help you gain confidence as you will provide a suitable ending to your school function or any other formal gathering.

How to deliver a great vote of thanks speech, step 1: opening your speech, opening your speech, 1. opening your speech.

Address the audience with an opening line. One option is to start your speech with a quote about giving thanks that you find meaningful.   Alternatively, you can just greet your audience.   Really draw your audience into your vote of thanks by making them a part of it.

• “Good evening, distinguished guests.”
• , “Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and dear friends.”
• “First, I’d like to thank everyone for being here.”

2. Introduce yourself and your role

If you haven’t already given your name, now is a good time. Tell your audience you’ve been asked to give a vote of thanks, and in 1 or 2 sentences, explain your relation to the organization. You might also include your role in the event.

• “My name is Sam, and I’m the chairman of the xyz Committee. It is my honor and privilege now to give a vote of thanks to all those who helped make this assembly happen.”
• “I’m Tom, and I’m the organizer of today’s event. On behalf of the xyz Bank, I have the honor of giving our vote of thanks today.

3. Acknowledge the occasion

Briefly mention the event or occasion and its significance. This sets the context for your speech and shows that you understand the purpose of the gathering.

4. Acknowledge the organization that brought everyone together

Every person in the room is likely to have some affiliation with the overarching organization. Before you move into the body of your speech, it’s nice to start with gratitude toward your host. Say 1 to 2 sentences about the event’s sponsor.

• “We would not be here without the hard work of the xyz Committee. Thank you to our volunteers for working so hard to make today happen.”
• “I’ll start by thanking the xyz Council for bringing us all together today. Thanks to their generosity, this event has been made possible.”

Step 2: Thanking People

1. identify the people you want to thank.

This list usually consists of speakers, guests, participants, organizers, volunteers, and sponsors.   Before you deliver your speech, write down the people and groups you’ll mention so you don’t forget anyone. Everyone who helped wants to feel like they played an important part, so make them feel special.

• “I’d like to thank the teachers for taking time away from their curriculum to allow students to hear this message. This assembly would be impossible without your support.”
• “I’d like to thank Mr. Stephen for speaking at tonight’s event, and I want to thank all of you for your contributions.”
• “Thank you to our guest speaker Dr. James for sharing her research on recycling and repurposing used materials. I’d also like to thank our event organizers for planning tonight’s dinner, and our volunteers for setting up and cleaning up after the event. Without them, tonight wouldn’t be possible.”

2. Be sincere and concise

You don’t have to gush to show your appreciation. Ironically, a long speech can turn off your audience—including the people you’re trying to thank. Keep your vote of thanks short and sweet to make a big impact.

• Instead of, “Mr. Ajay, I cannot thank you enough for letting us use your room to practice. Your generosity and kindness toward our committee has been overwhelming, and we would be nothing without you,” try: “Mr. Ajay, our committee is so grateful to you for letting us use your classroom to practice when we had nowhere else.

3. Call back to a specific moment from the event and respond to it

Show the guest speaker that you were actively listening by referencing something they said that stuck with you. In a few sentences, mention an idea a participant brought up and point out its relevance to the event’s overall themes. If you can, talk to the speaker ahead of time to find out what points they’re going to make.

• “Dr. John tips for befriending bullies really stuck out to me because it reminded me that our club’s goal is to spread kindness.”
• “Mr. Devan’s comments about generosity really spoke to me. When we give, we truly create a community.”

4. Share personal anecdotes or anecdotes from the event: Share a personal anecdote or a memorable moment from the event that encapsulates its essence. This can make your speech more relatable and engaging.

Step 3: Concluding Your Vote of Thanks

1. Underscore your organization’s value.

At the end of your speech, talk about what makes your organization special and give your audience something to think about. Emphasize ways your group helps your community, or how your audience can get more involved. End your speech by giving the audience a positive view of your group.

• “I would like to thank everyone who helped our committee make this anti-bullying assembly a reality. We are trying to make our halls a safe, friendly space for all students who walk down them, and it’s events like these that help us achieve that.”
• “I’d like to extend my genuine thanks to all of you for helping our organization provide food to people in need. Without you, there’d be a lot more hungry bellies in our community.”

2. Conclude with a positive note:

End your speech on an optimistic and uplifting note. You can offer best wishes for the future or express hopes for continued success in similar endeavors.

3. Thank everyone again.

When you’re giving a speech, your conclusion should summarize your main points.   In this case, you’re thanking people for helping your event happen. As you wrap up, address the entire audience with a big “thank you” because they all came together to make the day a success.

• “Again, I’m grateful for each and every one of you.”
• “One last time, I’d like to express my appreciation to everyone who worked on this event.”
• “I’d like to end by thanking all of you one last time.”

4. Speak for about 2 to 4 minutes.

Be concise in your vote of thanks, especially at the conclusion. It’s the end of the event and your audience doesn’t want to be keep waiting. Be considerate of their time and limit what you say to what needs  to be said.

• “Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to be here today and for listening to me speak. I am so grateful for this opportunity. Have a great weekend!”
• “Thank you, everyone, for being here tonight.”

Last but not the least, I would like to thank our Dean sir for always encouraging us and bringing us opportunities to explore our talent. I remember all the academic and unacademic activities organized in the college that helped me groom myself. Also, the placement drive and the efforts put in by him to bring in the best companies to the campus are commendable.

This place had been my second home for 4 years and will continue to be forever. This college has a special place in my heart and will be missed always.

Good evening respected dignitaries, teachers, and all my dear friends. I am really grateful for having given the chance to extend a vote of thanks to everyone present here.

It was a great evening and an amazing event organized by our lovely juniors. Such a special farewell was actually unexpected.

Nothing is permanent in this world. People are nomads, who keep moving from one place to another and change roles throughout their lives. Today, as we step out of this college, a new life awaits with new challenges. As we look back, a beautiful life bids adieu and asks us to bear the fruits of the hard work done for 4 years.

It was an amazing 4-year journey that passed in a blink of an eye. I still remember myself entering the college gate for the very first time. I was a shy, docile child who had heard all sorts of stories on college raggings and devil seniors. But all that wasn’t true. I have found the most helping and fun-loving seniors in this college. They were always ready to render a helping hand, be it in studies or elsewhere. And this was something I inherited from them.

The teachers were always ready to solve our queries no matter what. I can proudly say, I had been taught with the best teaching methods so far. Not only academics, we also ran to some of our teachers with our personal problems and were never left unattended. These people have always made me feel at home.

Of course, how can I forget those who made my survival easier here? The best of the friends this place gave me and our friendship will go on for ages.

Our managing committee had always kept us engaged with one or the other activities that helped to build our personalities a lot. I thank Dean Sir for putting in so much of efforts to get all of us placed in the best companies possible.

Last but not the least, I would extend my heartfelt gratitude to our lovely juniors who are no less than a family to me. The efforts they had put in are commendable. The anchor, the performers, the organizing committee, and the fillers were extremely entertaining. This was an evening to remember. I shall cherish all these memories throughout my life.

There are a few places you can never forget and it is all because of the people who made it special. College life is one of those phrases that teach us to deal with ourselves more than we deal with others. The lessons taught during this age are for a lifetime. I request all my dear juniors to cherish these moments. These won’t return and one should not live with regrets.

I once again thank everyone for making my journey worth remembering. I am leaving this place with a lot of experience, knowledge, and memories. Everyone will always have a special place in my heart.

He wanted his birthday celebrated as “the teacher’s day” on thiStudentsan auspicious opportunity to thank their honorable teachers. On this day, many students performed poems, speeches, dance performances and many other performances to thank their respected teachers, which is indeed beautiful.

A teacher is not only a person who teaches academic lessons to their students, but they are also a guide for a student. The word “GURU” is used for a teacher in India, which is a Sanskrit word, and in this word, “GU” means darkness, and “RU” means who removes darkness. A teacher helps the students in every aspect of their life. They are the future shapers of the students. They help students in achieving their goals. She sacrifices her own pleases for her family. A woman only needs respect from society. Many cases of domestic violence is a very shameful crime. We cannot even imagine how many women still suffer from domestic violence in this world. In many places, their husband and family members violate them for dowry. They are judged by people on their dressing sense and lifestyle. Many women here still do not have the freedom to wear clothes according to their wishes. My huge thanks also go to those supporting women living a lifestyle according to their wishes.

I would also like to thank all the parents around the globe who support their daughters and treat them as they treat their sons. The parents who treat their daughters and sons equally know that there is no difference between them, and they deserve equal love.

I would also like to thank all the people around the world who are working for the welfare of women and supporting women. We need more support from people to spread awareness about women’s empowerment . I want to extend my Vote of thanks to all our women who showed courage in fighting for their rights and freedom. Without their fighting spirit, it would not have been possible to make our NGO successful. We will try our best to provide freedom to all women still suffering.

Honourable Chief Guest, Honourable DCP, Dear Organizers and Visitors!

Today we have gathered here to celebrate the success of the initiative called ‘Love mankind’. The project was started two years ago, and I am extremely glad to share that it has been going highly successful since then. It’s indeed an honour and a matter of great joy for me to extend a vote of thanks to all who have contributed to making this project a great success.

Our NGO was established 10 years ago, on the same day-to-day, to save small children, minors and women from trafficking. Even though we are an independent organization, the residents highly admire us; we also get support from the local authority and the local police in this area and other areas too where we operate. Two months ago, we received a complaint from some school students’ parents that their kids continuously saw a beggar child crying outside their school gate; that child also had some bruises on his body. To know more about this incident, we sent some of our workers to that area, and they also noticed the same thing. We involved local police in questioning the child further.

We came to know that he had lost his parents and was forced into begging by some strangers. We raided the address shared by the child and rescued around 50 children from there. These children are with us now, and we are trying every attempt to send them to their respective parents once they recall their addresses, etc. Our NGO works for the benefit of deprived children, and we protect them against crimes such as trafficking, exploitation, etc. We run several schools in remote areas that operate 24 hours to educate homeless children who do not go to school for some other reason.

I want to share special thanks to DCP Mr A for deploying police officers in areas where begging is more prevalent. The department has always helped us whenever we want to in carrying out a raid or investigation, etc. We would also like to thank the industrialists, Mr B, Mrs C and Mr D & Sons, for their continuous support in the form of donations; we use the donation money to open up schools, buy necessary items for the children, install medical camps, etc. We would also like to thank the School authorities and the teachers in our area who work as guest teachers in our schools. Thanks to the residents of this locality who don’t employ small children as domestic help but rather support their education and other necessities. Some of the youth of these residents also work with us voluntarily. We have made groups of five people each and deployed each group in remote areas of all those states from where children and women are imported to the metro cities for begging, prostitution, domestic help, etc. The parents of these remote areas have many kids who are so poor that they cannot even afford the upbringing and education of all the kids. We offer a source of income to such women through art and craft. By imparting basic education in these areas, we have made the families and their kids self-dependent.

I would acknowledge that this wouldn’t have been successful without your help. Let’s continue with the good work always.

Honourable Chief Guest, Respected Visitors and My Dear Team Members!

I feel honoured and privileged to have an opportunity to offer a vote of thanks on this memorable occasion.

First, I would like to thank the authority for showing trust in our company and assigning this great work of fitting water pipelines in our state’s villages and remote areas. I am elated to announce the successful closure of this project. There are around 25 villages where we have installed water pipelines. These villages had to face the water shortage every summer; the hand pumps installed in the villages also get dried out in May, June and July. The ladies of these villages travel 2-3 kilometres daily to get water from the nearby pond, which has stagnant and contaminated water. This leads to the spread of diseases like diarrhoea and cholera, affecting the people of these villages, especially the kids and older people.

I want to extend my Vote of thanks to The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, as this mission couldn’t have been successful without their expert guidance and supervision.

This was a personal mission for me because it was exceedingly disheartening to notice that some people in our state struggled so much to meet one of life’s most basic needs, such as water. Initially, the plan was to install a water pipeline zone-wise and pick two villages at a time; but our company was determined to liberate the people of all these villages from the curse of thirst and dryness. We, therefore, started the project on a large-scale level, invested a huge amount, and involved several employees, engineers, workers and labourers to accomplish the mission at the same time.

I cannot forget sharing my Vote of thanks with the investors, employees, labourers and workers who have put their heart and soul into making this project successful.

I would also like to extend a vote of thanks to Mr A of NGO XYZ for installing mobile medical camps in these villages. People here are very poor and struggle a lot to earn their livelihood. Our company has decided to donate 10% of our monthly profit to XYZ NGO; the money will be utilized to open permanent schools and hospitals in these villages.

We are also planning to open cottage industries and employ the villagers, men and women who can start earning their livelihood. Children would go to school, and the death ratio would get reduced as the people would get benefitted from the timely treatment.

It’s an honour to extend my Vote of thanks to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Textiles, Handicrafts and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare for allowing us to open schools, cottage industries and hospitals in these areas; for it is not possible to succeed without their constant trust and support.

Our mission is to make each family independent by 2020; our company will personally supervise the functioning of the industries, schools and hospitals for the next five years for any support.

For this, I would, of course, require the dedication and commitment of the employees of my company. On this note, I close my speech. Thank you for listening to me with so much patience.

The decision to approve the UK's first coal mine for 30 years has been thrown out by a High Court judge.

Today's ruling likely forces Angela Rayner, the Labour government's housing, communities and local government secretary, to reconsider the planning application for the Whitehaven coal mine - this time taking into account the full damage it could do to the climate.

Mr Justice Holgate said in his judgment: "The assumption that the proposed mine would not produce a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions, or would be a net zero mine, is legally flawed."

At a hearing in July, the newly elected government had already decided not to defend the previous Conservative administration's decision to greenlight the project, following new legal developments.

The future of the proposed mine is now uncertain.

The Conservative leadership competition is approaching the crunch point.

In the first round of voting by Tory MPs last week, the former home secretary Dame Priti Patel was voted out.

A second vote took place on Tuesday evening, in which former work and pensions secretary Mel Stride was eliminated.

Here's a reminder of who's left vying for Rishi Sunak's job:

James Cleverly

Mr Cleverly became the first to officially enter the contest with a post on social media, saying he wanted to "re-establish our reputation as the party who, in government, helps grow the economy".

The Essex MP, who was home secretary until the last election, is one of the Tories' most experienced former cabinet ministers, having also been foreign secretary, education secretary and party chairman.

Tom Tugendhat

Mr Tugendhat was the second Tory to put himself forward, just moments after nominations opened.

The former security minister is regarded highly among the One Nation group of moderate Tory MPs.

Robert Jenrick

The former immigration minister was the third to announce he was running, after Mr Cleverly and Mr Tugendhat.

Mr Jenrick held several ministerial roles, including communities secretary - a position he lost in one of Mr Johnson's reshuffles.

Kemi Badenoch

Mrs Badenoch, the ex-business secretary, was the final Tory to announce she was standing.

She is seen as a darling of the right and has impressed some in the party with her no-nonsense approach.

What happens next?

Later this month, the remaining candidates will give speeches to the party's conference, setting out their stalls to both MPs and party members.

MPs will then vote again to narrow the field to two candidates.

The party's wider membership will then vote, with the winner announced on 2 November.

Sir Keir Starmer has refused to rule out axing the 25% single-person council tax discount, saying decisions on the public finances had to be looked at "in the round".

The prime minister said he would not be drawn on the future of the tax break for people who live alone ahead of Chancellor Rachel Reeves' budget on 30 October.

Scrapping the discount could further hit some pensioners living alone who have already suffered the loss of winter fuel payments, but Sir Keir insisted he was not punishing elderly Britons.

The Local Government Association, which represents councils, has argued that cash-strapped authorities should be given the power to vary the single person discount, which is worth about £3bn a year.

Sir Keir was challenged about the potential impact of scrapping the discount for elderly people who live alone and denied the assertion it was a "punishment beating" for pensioners.

"No, absolutely not," he told reporters accompanying him on his trip to Washington.

"And let's just try to quash this now. The budget is on October 30. So, between now and then, you are all going to ask me questions, as you did before the election, 'will you rule out X, Y, Z?'

"And knowing that I'm not going to say before the budget what we're going to do, you will then write a story saying, 'refused to rule out X, Y, Z'.

"I'm not going to say before the budget what we're going to do."

Crime and policing minister Dame Diana Johnson has had her purse stolen - while meeting senior officers to discuss shoplifting and thefts.

It happened as the Labour MP attended the Police Superintendents' Association's annual conference in Kenilworth in the West Midlands.

During a speech at the event, Dame Diana said the UK had been "gripped by an epidemic of anti-social behaviour, theft and shoplifting".

She later discovered her belongings had been stolen, although no "security risk" was identified, officials said.

There was no growth in the UK economy in July, official figures show.

It's the second month of stagnation, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said as GDP - the measure of everything produced in the UK - flatlined in the weeks following the election of the Labour government.

The flatline was not expected by economists, who had anticipated growth.

A significant sigh of relief for the government and for the prison service who have been battling a chronic overcrowding crisis for the best part of a year.

The release of thousands of people under a new policy has clearly had an impact reflected in the statistics after just a few days. But there are questions on how long it lasts – for a couple of reasons.

First – there are fears that the mass release of thousands of people in such a manner doesn't prepare offenders for the community properly and that perhaps reoffence and recalls are inevitable – defeating the point entirely.

And second – remember we are still in the midst of the rapid sentencing of rioters after the events in the summer.

Plus – many say that if we continue to send people to prison in the way we are today, with lengthy sentences for some – well we will quickly be back to the same position.

Some prison insiders say we could return to that point within 9 months to a year.

So temporary relief and respite. But some realism too about how long it lasts.

Six British diplomats have been expelled from Russia after being accused of "spying and sabotage".

The country's FSB security service said they worked in the "political department" of the British embassy in Moscow.

A Whitehall source told Sky News the diplomats were kicked out in August as part of a wave of tit-for-tat expulsions.

The source strongly denied the individuals had been involved in spying.

The FSB claimed the Eastern Europe and Central Asia branch of the Foreign Office was now a "special service whose main task is to inflict a strategic defeat on our country".

News of the latest expulsion comes as President Vladimir Putin warned against Ukraine getting approval to use Western-supplied long-range missiles against Russia.

He said it would "significantly change the very essence, the very nature of the conflict" and "mean that NATO countries, US, European countries are at war with Russia".

NEW YORK (AP) — Taylor Swift ‘s dominance continued at the MTV Video Music Awards , where she took home seven awards — including the night’s biggest, the trophy for video of the year.

In her speech Wednesday night, Swift thanked her “boyfriend, Travis” for being on set of the “Fortnight” music video and cheering her on. Fans rewarded the mention of NFL star Travis Kelce with loud screams.

“Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic,” she said, before shifting gears to the 2024 presidential election and instructing her fans who are over 18 to register to vote.

Swift did, however, avoid discussing Kamala Harris’ presidential bid on stage. On Tuesday night, Swift endorsed the vice president , moments after Harris’ debate with former president Donald Trump ended.

Swift’s awards haul brings her to a career total of 30, tying her and Beyoncé for the title of most-awarded musician in VMA history. Eminem is now the male artist with the most VMAs, at 15.

Swift and Post Malone also took home the first televised award of the VMAs for best collaboration, for “Fortnight,” handed to them by Flavor Flav and Olympian Jordan Chiles.

Swift started that speech by giving remembrance to everyone who lost their lives and loved ones during 9/11, 23 years ago.

“I’ve just been thinking about what happened 23 years ago, everyone who lost a loved one and everyone that we lost and that is the most important thing about today,” she said. “And everything that happens tonight falls behind that.”

She then turned to discussing Malone.

“There is a reason Post Malone is everyone in music’s favorite person to collaborate with,” she shifted her attention to him. “It has taken forever for me to get him to stop calling me ma’am.”

Chappell Roan won the MTV Video Music Award for best new artist.

“I dedicate this to all the drag artists who inspire me,” she said in her speech, while wearing chain mail, reading from a written speech in her diary. “And I dedicate this to queer and trans people who run pop. ... Thank you for listening.”

Women dominated the award show, no example greater than an imaginative, medieval set from Roan.

Drag queen Sasha Colby introduced her with “your favorite drag queen’s favorite artist,” a reference to Roan’s now famous Coachella performance, which in turn was inspired by Colby. Real fans no doubt got a kick out of the hyper-referential tidbit.

Roan appeared in armor, shooting a lit crossbow at castle gates that stood behind her, burning them in the process. Her dancers were knights, battling each other in incredible choreography as she sang her queer pop hit, “Good Luck, Babe.”

The other voice of 2024 pop, Sabrina Carpenter , won the trophy for song of the year for “Espresso.”

“This is really special,” she said in her speech, dedicated to her fans. “And thank you to that me-espresso.”

Earlier in the night, she brought her summery-pop to the award show, powering through her hit singles “Please Please Please,” “Taste” and “Espresso” while dancing with a moon man and an alien.

Katy Perry received the Video Vanguard Award , performing an eight-song medley spanning her career: “Roar,” “E.T.,” “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “I Kissed a Girl,” “Firework,” and “Lifetimes.”

“I did that all on the first day of my period, can you believe it?” she joked after accepting the honor from her partner, Orlando Bloom. “There are so many things that have to align to have a long and successful career as an artist. There are no decade long accidents.”

She also teased a new song, “I’m His, He’s Mine,” featuring Doechii, which samples the Crystal Waters classic, “Gypsy Woman (La Da Dee La Da Da).”

Previous recipients of the Video Vanguard Award include Shakira, Beyoncé, Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Missy Elliott.

An army of Slim Shady-lookalikes followed Eminem as he kicked off the VMAs , launching into a medley of his hits “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me,” featuring a broadcast feed of Jelly Roll. (The song references Jelly Roll’s massive country radio hit, “Save Me.”)

Megan Thee Stallion welcomed the crowd as a first-time host Wednesday night, who joked that the VMAs now stands for the “voluptuous Megan awards.” She later performed.

Earlier in the evening, Karol G took over, for a fiery performance of her hit, “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido.” Rauw Alejandro brought Puerto Rico to the stage, running through “Touching The Sky,” “DILUIVO” and “Déjame Entrar.”

Tyla won the best Afrobeats award.

LL COOL J celebrated 40 years of Def Jam Records with Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav and Chuck D.

Halsey took it to the suburbs for her new single, “Ego,” channeling garage bands. GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!” and “TGIF” brought style.

Blackpink’s LISA, the best K-pop award winner, made her way to the VMA stage for the first time as a soloist, powering through two of her brand-new singles, “New Woman” and “Rockstar.” Shawn Mendes made along-awaited return, debuting a new John Mayer-esq. acoustic number, “Nobody Knows.”

Anitta performed “Paradise,” “Alegria,” and “Savage Funk,” joined by DJ Khaled, Fat Joe and Tiago PZK and won the award for best Latin. Camilla Cabello performed in a panopticon. Benson Boone seemed as stoked as ever to perform his viral hit “Beautiful Things” on the VMAs stage. Lenny Kravitz proved rock isn’t dead with “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” “Human” and finally “Fly,” in which he was joined by Quavo.

The 40th VMAs were held at the UBS Arena on New York’s Long Island.

The night was stacked with celebrities and featured plenty of Swift, who arrived at the award show wearing a green tartan corset with a matching train and long black leather gloves.

Throughout the night, MTV flashed back to history-making across the VMAs’ 40-year-run, including Britney Spears’ albino python and Madonna’s performance of “Like A Virgin.”
