Independence Day Celebration in My School

Fifteen August, is a red letter day in the history of India. On this day in 1947, our country become free form the long imprisonment of the British rule. Since 1947, fifteenth August is celebrated every year with great joy and pride. It reminds us for the great struggle of our freedom from the British rule. The great sacrifice for our freedom fighters is remembered, which serves as a beacon light for the development of this great country. The main function is held at Red Fort in Delhi where the Prime Minister unfurls the National flag. It is an occasion of celebration for every Indian and the whole nation celebrate a holiday from all work and take a pledge to work whole heatedly for the development of this country and preservation of Independence. All those who have stood out exclusively in their respective field of work are honored in public meetings. The whole nation pays homage to the security forces who have laid down their lives for the honor and security of the country.

We also celebrated the Independence day in our school compound, with great pump and show. The school building and the ground were cleaned and decorated for the occasion. A flag pole was put up at the top of the school building. The seating arrangement was made on the platform. Markings were made on the ground with white lines. The flower pots were kept all along the path.

There was great enthusiasm among students. The school band of students took its position half an hour before the actual function was to began. The members of the band were wearing a beautiful uniform. They began to play sweet tunes. The students had taken their places well before the time. They were all in school uniform, the white paint and white shirt.

The guests began to arrive at 7.45 a.m. our teachers received them and offered those seats. All the respectable persons of state including the Education Minister, guardians of students and teachers of other schools were invited on this occasion.

The function began exactly at 8 a.m. all who were present stood in attention. The principal unfurled the flag. The petals of rose fell on us. Five boys sang a song in honor of the national flag. It was “Vijayee Vishwa Trianga Payara” . Them by the school band. The principal look the salute. He made an impressive speech and invited the Education Minster to impressive speech and invited the Education Minster to address us. In his address he asked us to take pledge to safeguard the freedom of nation. He also reminded us of great sons of India, Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Roy and Chander Shekar Azad and their sacrifices to the nation. After that different groups of students presented a programme of mass drill and pyramid formation. Ever one liked the programme.

In the end, all stood in attention. All the students, teachers and guardians sang the National Anthem in chorus. With this the function was over. Today the memories of this function are as alive to me, as it was on that day.

August 15, 2019; Kishanganj, Bihar: This year on 15th August 2019 the celebration of Independence Day was held in a mesmerizing way on the campus of Bal Mandir Senior Secondary School, Kishanganj, Bihar.

All the students were wearing a neat and clean school uniforms with a few wearing colourful costumes for the programs of the day. The school was decorated with a bridal look.

The morning of Independence Day in the school started with a grand morning assembly at exactly 10:00 am with numerous students of the school in the school field. The flag hoisting was done by the chief guest Mr Uttam Sinha with the National Anthem followed by the national song.

The BSF Camp Chief was regarded as the chief guest of the program and was given a floral welcome. There was also an event of the March-past organized by different houses of the school, as each house with their battalion took a circle of the field representing their colour flag on the hand of the house captain leading the troop.

The second part of the celebration was the colourful programs in the school field which were inaugurated by blowing a bunch of colourful balloons in the air followed by an inaugural speech by the BSF Chief and then the principal of the school.

The programs included dance, singing, drama, and even speeches by the school students. The program has a special act of Marshal Art by the boys and girls of the school which includes tiles breaking, jumping off the fire, and many more.

There was also a fancy dress competition and the one winning the show is given certificates and prizes. Each student was given biscuits and chocolates from the school authority. The performing students were given a lunch packet. The event took place till 2:30 noon.

DAV International SR. SEC. School, 16th August 2019 : It was a pleasant morning on the campus of DAV International Sr. Sec. School, New Subhash Nagar which was fully decorated with saffron, white and green colours.

The morning assembly was held in the school field exactly at 10:30 am which was followed by the hosting of the tricolour flag accompanied by the National anthem and the National song and everyone saluting the National flag created a different ambience on the premises.

Later, the students of different classes marched passed according to the rolling of the drum, which was enough to give goosebumps. The campus was filled with the aura of patriotism all around as patriotic songs were played in the background.

The colourful programs started with an opening dance followed by an inspiring speech by the principal of the school. The school had created different sitting arrangements for the parents, students, and the school authority members to seat under the colourful tents.

The participants were wearing different colourful dresses which were looking like flowers in the garden. The programs had varying events including dancing, singing, poetry recitation, and the declamation contest which were themed on patriotism. The play-act showing the hanging of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev bought tears to the eyes of the audience.

The Chairman of the school also gave a speech followed by the teachers which reminded us of the struggle, blood and scarify that our freedom fighters did to give us this Independence of life.

The Chairman thanked the school authority and the student members for making such wonderful arrangements possible every year. The program was held till 2:30 pm noon. All the students were given sweets and chocolates after the program.

Independence day.

June 12, 1990: Russia declares itself an independent and sovereign state known as the Russian Federation
June 12, 1991: Boris Yeltsin became the first democratically elected president of the Russian Federation. He was inaugurated on July 10, 1991.

In most countries, Independence Day conjures up images of grand celebration, fireworks, family get-togethers, parades and so on. These celebrations commemorate the declaration and establishment of sovereignty by a colony or nation occupied and governed by another nation. This is not exactly the case with Russia's Independence Day.

During the Soviet Era, Russia was considered the center of power of the USSR. In fact, the Soviet Union is often referred to as Soviet Russia. This is, of course, incorrect as Russia was one of fifteen Soviet States. Russia was the largest of the states and the capital of the USSR was in Moscow, giving the idea that Russia was the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union was Russia.

The question is, who did Russia gain independence from? This goes back to how Russians viewed their country during the Soviet Era. It was Russia which, one after another, brought together fourteen other states to form a union of states. Russia was considered the motherland and everything political led to the Kremlin and Moscow. Russia pulled the union together, Russian was the common language and to this day you can still hear people, especially in the West, use the terms Russia and Soviet Union interchangeably.

Mikhail Gorbachev was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union on March 11, 1985. One of the first things he did was to crack down on alcohol consumption and mandated that all embassy events be alcohol free. During October and November of 1985, Gorbachev presented a sweeping plan for Soviet economic improvement. From 1986 - 2000, Gorbachev envisioned a total increase in the production of consumer goods of 90 percent. Quality of living standards were to rise 60 - 80 percent and nuclear energy output was to increase by ca. 500 percent. Wages and salaries for workers, scientists, etc., were to be doubled and he forbad agricultural workers from gaining employment in the cities and factories.

Perestroika got its start at the Twenty-Seventh Party Congress in 1986. Gorbachev's program of economic, political, and social reform would represent the end of roughly 70 years of the Soviet state. Most of the world observed the evolution of perestroika in shock and awe. The Soviet giant was something we never expected to see come to an end. Germany was reunited, the Warsaw Pact faded away and the all too familiar Cold War suddenly ended.

Gorbachev's new policies regarding a market economy were intended to increase production, raise wages and quality of life for all workers. His plan accepted only a limited amount of privatization in both industry and agriculture. Nothing great came of Gorbachev's economic plan because centralized Communist control was left in place. Instead, deadly revolts broke out in the Caucasus and Baltic states and civil unrest grew. If you are old enough, you will remember images of Soviet citizens standing in long lines, hoping to get a loaf of bread or pair of shoes. Consumer goods became critically scarce and many went without the basics.

Gorbachev's policies of openness and reform; glasnost and perestroika ; unleashed an unexpected epidemic of independence movements within the Soviet Union. People were, technically, free to speak their minds, demonstrate and protest. Perestroika opened the door for the leaders of the collection of states to demand more control over their individual regions and, eventually, sovereignty from the Soviet Union. Russia, being one of these states, was no exception.

Boris Yeltsin was the head of the Russian Congress of People's Deputies. On June 12, 1990, this assembly officially adopted the Declaration of the State Sovereignty (907-13), establishing the Russian Federation as a sovereign state within the Soviet Union and outlining its new structure and goals. In theory, this declaration gave Russia control over its own unique political and social issues. Individual inalienable rights were the top priority along with the intent to establish a law based democratic government. On matters that effected the entire Soviet Union, Russia would bow to the Soviet. Again, in theory, this was to be comparable to the U.S. where each state has a certain level of autonomy but is obligated to comply with the laws and constitution of the United States.

In the Soviet Union, this concept of independent states created a much different reality and was the final chapter of the unified Soviet state. The Russian Congress of People's Deputies declared their authority over matters within the boundaries of the Russian state to take precedence over Soviet rule. As a result, a dual political system was established within Russia. In Moscow, there was Gorbachev as the head of the Soviet Union and Yeltsin as the head of Russia.

These two forces wrestled with each other for control and superiority. One might think that Russia, as a part of the Soviet Union, would bow to the Supreme Soviet. For the sake of discussion, think about what happened in the U.S. during the mid-1800s. States, specifically southern ones, which refused to bow to Washington, left the union and banned together to form a separate country. This led to civil war.

In Moscow, Yeltsin was critical of Gorbachev's slow paced reforms. The latter was becoming increasingly unpopular with the Russian people as the whole union sunk deeper into economic despair. The flamboyant Yeltsin made a fast rise in popularity. On the first anniversary of the Russian declaration of sovereignty, Boris Yeltsin achieved an overwhelming victory to become the first democratically elected president of the Russian Federation.

Gorbachev proposed a new national structure based upon de-centralization of power and the formation of a Union of Sovereign States . This proved to be too little too late. Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States were the first to decline membership in this new union.

From this point, it was down hill for the Soviet Union. On August 19, 1991, a coup was launched by KGB chief Vladimir Kryuchov and Defense Minister Dmitry Yazov. Their hope was to save the Soviet Union and to abort the formation of Gorbachev's new union. Yeltsin and his supporters resisted and brought down the coup.

Ruling from the White House in Moscow, Yelstin set forth his plan for greater reforms. The Soviet Union fell apart as each state declared its independence and, under Yeltsin's leadership, formed the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). On December 8, 1991, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus signed documents which officially established the CIS. The Soviet Union, as a unified state, was forever gone. Mikhail Gorbachev resigned on December 25, 1991, and the Soviet flag was brought down from over the Kremlin.

The question is, who did Russia gain independence from? The answer is confusing one; from the Soviet Union. Actually, the official name of this June 12 holiday is Day of the Passage of the Declaration of the State Sovereignty . According to the All-Russia Center for Public Opinion Research, or VTsIOM, about half of all Russians surveyed think that this declaration hurt both Russia and several of the former Soviet States.

It is an official state holiday, a long weekend away from work to spend resting or getting together with family and friends. It also serves as a reminder to many Russians of a time of turmoil and uncertainty, a period which could have easily resulted in all out civil war and the point where they turned away from a strict, closed society to one opened up to the world. Russia has made progress, but will continue to wrestle with the adjustment from 70 years of Soviet domination to dealing with personal freedoms, capitalism and the freedom to interact with other peoples and nations without fear.

Ukraine Observes Independence Day With Subdued Celebrations

The Ukrainian authorities said the national holiday, which comes exactly 18 months after Russia’s full-scale invasion, won’t include public celebrations amid concerns about Russian attacks.

Ukraine is observing its second wartime Independence Day by displaying the carcasses of destroyed Russian military equipment along a central avenue in Kyiv, giving residents a firsthand glimpse at the country’s struggle to defend itself from Russia’s invasion.

There will be no parades or other major events. The authorities have announced that the national holiday on Thursday — which also comes 18 months after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began — won’t include public celebrations amid concerns that Russia could launch huge strikes to spoil the occasion.

“I urge all Kyiv residents and guests of the capital to be as attentive and cautious as possible these days and not to neglect the air-raid warnings,” Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, the capital, said on Monday .

Independence Day in Ukraine commemorates the country’s 1991 break from the Soviet Union, but also increasingly serves as a rallying point for Ukrainians to assert their identity and aspirations.

“People are honoring 1991 not so much for what happened then as for what it represents today,” said Roman Szporluk, a professor emeritus of Ukrainian history at Harvard. “It stands for independence, democracy, Europe, the West.”

Last year, as mass gatherings were also banned, Ukrainians similarly took the opportunity to show defiance against Moscow , with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine delivering a speech in front of another lineup of destroyed tanks in Kyiv.
