Read the source given below and answer the questions that follow: On the morning of 14 July 1789, the city of Paris was in a state of alarm. The king had commanded troops to move into the city. Rumours spread that he would soon order the army to open fire upon the citizens. Some 7,000 men and women gathered in front of the town hall and decided to form a peoples’ militia. They broke into a number of government buildings in search of arms. Finally, a group of several hundred people marched towards the eastern part of the city and stormed the fortress-prison, the Bastille, where they hoped to find hoarded ammunition. In the armed fight that followed, the commander of the Bastille was killed and the prisoners released – though there were only seven of them. Yet the Bastille was hated by all because it stood for the despotic power of the king. The fortress was demolished and its stone fragments were sold in the markets to all those who wished to keep a souvenir of its destruction. The days that followed saw more rioting both in Paris and the countryside. Most people were protesting against the high price of bread. Much later, when historians looked back upon this time, they saw it as the beginning of a chain of events that ultimately led to the execution of the king in France, though most people at the time did not anticipate this outcome. The Himalayas, geologically young and structurally fold mountains stretch over the Himalayas northern borders of India. These mountain ranges run in a west-east direction from the Indus to the Brahmaputra. The Himalayas represent the loftiest and one of the most rugged mountain barriers of the world. They form an arc, which covers a distance of about 2,400 Km. Their width varies from 400 Km in Kashmir to 150 Km in Arunachal Pradesh. The altitudinal variations are greater in the eastern half than those in the western half. The Himalaya consists of three parallel ranges in its longitudinal extent. A number of valleys lie between these ranges. The northern most range is known as the Great or Inner Himalayas. It is the most continuous range consisting of the loftiest peaks with an average height of 6,000 metres. It contains all the prominent Himalayan peaks.

The folds of Great Himalayas are asymmetrical in nature. The core of this part of Himalayas is composed of granite. It is perennially snow bound, and a number of glaciers descend from this range.

Read the source given below and answer the questions that follow: In Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf led a military coup in October 1999. He overthrew a democratically elected government and declared himself the ‘Chief Executive’ of the country. Later he changed his designation to President and in 2002 held a referendum in the country that granted him a five-year extension. Pakistani media, human rights organisations and democracy activists said that the referendum was based on malpractices and fraud. In August 2002 he issued a ‘Legal Framework Order’ that amended the Constitution of Pakistan. According to this Order, the President can dismiss the national and provincial assemblies. The work of the civilian cabinet is supervised by a National Security Council which is dominated by military officers. After passing this law, elections were held to the national and provincial assemblies. So Pakistan has had elections, elected representatives have some powers. But the final power rested with military officers and General Musharraf himself. Clearly, there are many reasons why Pakistan under General Musharraf should not be called a democracy. People may have elected their representatives to the national and provincial assemblies but those elected representatives were not really the rulers. They cannot take the final decisions. The power to take final decision rested with army officials and with General Musharraf, and none of them were elected by the people. This happens in many dictatorships and monarchies. They formally have an elected parliament and government but the real power is with those who are not elected. In a few countries, the real power was with some external powers and not with locally elected representatives. This cannot be called people’s rule. Case Study 1: These forests are restricted to heavy rainfall areas of the Western Ghats and the island groups of Lakshadweep, Andaman, and Nicobar, upper parts of Assam and Tamil Nadu coast. They are at their best in areas having more than 200 cm of rainfall with a short dry season. The trees reach great heights up to 60 meters or even above. Since the region is warm and wet throughout the year, it has luxuriant vegetation of all kinds – trees, shrubs, and creepers giving it a multilayered structure. There is no definite time for trees to shed their leaves. As such, these forests appear green all the year round. Some of the commercially important trees of this forest are ebony, mahogany, rosewood, rubber, and cinchona. The common animals found in these forests are elephants, monkeys, lemurs, and deer. One-horned rhinoceroses are found in the jungles of Assam and West Bengal. Besides these animals, plenty of birds, bats, sloths, scorpions, and snails are also found in these jungles.

The major types of vegetation found in India include tropical evergreen forests, tropical deciduous forests, thorny bushes, and mangrove forests. The tropical evergreen forests, found mainly in the western slopes of the Western Ghats and the northeastern states, are characterized by dense foliage and a wide variety of flora and fauna. The tropical deciduous forests, found in regions with moderate rainfall, shed their leaves during the dry season. The thorny bushes are well-adapted to arid and semi-arid regions. The mangrove forests, found in coastal areas, thrive in saline conditions and provide a unique habitat for various species. India is also home to diverse wildlife, including tigers, elephants, rhinoceros, lions, and a wide range of bird species. Protecting and conserving these natural resources is essential for maintaining ecological balance and preserving biodiversity.

The cold weather season begins from midnovember in northern india and stays till february. december and january are the coldest months in the northern part of india. the temperature decreases from south to the north. the average temperature of chennai on the eastern coast, is between 24° c - 25° celsius, while in the northern plains, it ranges between 10°c and 15° celsius. days are warm and nights are cold. frost is common in the north and the higher slopes of the himalayas experience snowfall. during this season, the northeast trade winds prevail over the country. they blow from land to sea and hence, for most part of the country, it is a dry season. some amount of rainfall occurs on the tamil nadu coast from these winds as, here they blow from sea to land. in the northern part of the country, a feeble highpressure region develops, with light winds moving outwards from this area. influenced by the relief, these winds blow through the ganga valley from the west and the northwest. the weather is normally marked by clear sky, low temperatures and low humidity and feeble, variable winds. a characteristic feature of the cold weather season over the northern plains is the inflow of cyclonic disturbances from the west and the northwest. these low-pressure systems, originate over the mediterranean sea and western asia and move into india, along with the westerly flow. they cause the much-needed winter rains over the plains and snowfall in the mountains. although the total amount of winter rainfall locally known as ‘mahawat’ is small, they are of immense importance for the cultivation of ‘rabi’ crops., answer the following mcqs by choosing the most appropriate option., question (i), in cold weather season of winter, the temperature decreases from:, (a) south to the north, (b) east to the west, (c) south to the east, (d) north to the west.

(i): India lies in the Northern hemisphere, with the mainland extending between latitudes 8°4’N and 37°6’N and longitudes 68°7’E and 97°25’E. The Tropic of Cancer (23° 30’N) divides the country into almost two equal parts, where the Lakshadweep islands lie in the Arabian Sea to the south-west of the mainland, and the Andaman and Nicobar islands lie in the Bay of Bengal to the south-east of the mainland.

(ii): The countries which are larger than India are Russia, Canada, the U.S.A, China, Brazil and Australia. Russia is the largest of all countries, with an area of 17.09 million sq.km, while India has an area of 3.28 million sq.km.

(iii): The Andaman and Nicobar islands lie to the south-east of India in the Bay of Bengal. India has a land boundary of about 15,200 km. The total length of the coastline, including the islands of Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep, is 7,516.6 km.

(iv): The island countries that are our southern neighbours are Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Maldives Islands are situated to the south of the Lakshadweep Islands, whereas Sri Lanka is separated from India by a narrow channel of sea formed by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar.

The latitudinal and longitudinal extent of India is about 30°. The east-west extent is smaller than the north-south extent. There is a time lag of two hours from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh. As Arunachal Pradesh lies on the eastern side of India, the sun rises here earlier when compared to Gujarat. The time along the Standard Meridian of India (82°30’E) passing through Mirzapur (in Uttar Pradesh) is taken as the standard time for the whole country. The latitudinal extent influences the duration of day and night as one moves from south to north. Therefore, the watches show the same time in all parts of the country.

India is a southward extension of the Asian continent and is located in a central position between East and West Asia. The Indian Ocean provides a strategic central location to India, as it connects the East Asian countries with Europe in the West. The Deccan Peninsula also protrudes into the Indian Ocean, thus helping India establish close contact with West Asia, Africa and Europe from the western coast and with Southeast and East Asia from the eastern coast. There is no other country like India in the world which has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean and thus, justifying the naming of an ocean after it.

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follows:

In mountainous areas, the decrease in temperature with increasing altitude leads to the corresponding change in natural vegetation. As such, there is a succession of natural vegetation belts in the same order as we see from the tropical to the tundra region. The wet temperate type of forests are found between a height of 1,000 and 2,000 metres. Evergreen broad-leaf trees, such as oaks and chestnuts predominate. Between 1,500 and 3,000 metres, temperate forests containing coniferous trees, like pine, deodar, silver fir, spruce and cedar, are found. These forests cover mostly the southern slopes of the Himalayas, places having high altitude in Southern and North-East India. At higher elevations, temperate grasslands are common. At high altitudes, generally, more than 3,600 metres above the sea level, temperate forests and grasslands give way to the Alpine vegetation. Silver fir, junipers, pines and birches are the common trees of these forests.

Understanding Euclid’s Geometry

Euclid’s Definitions

  • A point is that which has no part.
  • A line is breadthless length.
  • The ends of a line are points.
  • A straight line is a line which lies evenly with the points on itself.
  • A surface is that which has length and breadth only.
  • The edges of a surface are lines.
  • A plane surface is a surface which lies evenly with the straight lines on itself.

A sentence which can be judged to be true or false, e.g., The sum of the angles of a quadrilateral is 360°, is a true statement and a line segment has one end point, is a false statement.

The basic facts taken for granted without proof. e.g., A line has infinitely many points.

A mathematical statement whose truth has been established (proved)

Euclid’s Axioms

  • Things which are equal to the same thing are equal to one another.
  • If equals are added to equals, the wholes are equal.
  • If equals are subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal.
  • Things which coincide with one another, are equal to one another.
  • The whole is greater than the part.
  • Things which are double of the same things, are equal to one another.
  • Things which are halves of the same things, are equal to one another.

Postulate: The assumptions which are specific to geometry, e.g., Two points make a line.

Euclid’s Postulates

Postulate 1: A straight line may be drawn from any one point to any other point. Postulate 2: A terminated line can be produced indefinitely. Postulate 3: A circle can be drawn with any centre and any radius. Postulate 4: All right angles are equal to one another. Postulate 5: (Parallel Postulate): If a straight line falling on two straight lines makes the interior angles on the same side of it taken together less than two right angles, then the two straight lines, if produced indefinitely, meet on that side on which the sum of angles is less than two right angles.
