It is a common ground that humans have always modified the genome of both plants and animals. This intrusive process that has existed for thousands of years, many times through mistakes and failures, was initially carried out through the crossing of organisms with desirable features. This was done with the aim of creating and producing new plants and animals that would benefit humans, that is , they would offer better quality food, more opportunities for people to move and transport products, greater returns to work, resistance to diseases, etc. However, creating genetically modified organisms does not proceed without conflicts. One part of the equation concerns objections made by disputants of genetically modified organisms to the manipulation of life, as opposed to defenders who argue that it is essentially an extension of traditional plant cultivation and animal breeding techniques. There are also conflicts regarding the risks to the environment and human health from using genetically modified organisms. Concerns about the risks to the environment and human health from genetically modified products have been the subject of much debate, which has led to the development of regulatory frameworks for the evaluation of genetically modified crops. However, the absence of a globally accepted framework has the effect of slowing down technological development with negative consequences for areas of the world that could benefit from new technologies. So, while genetically modified crops can provide maximum benefits in food safety and in adapting crops to existing climate change, the absence of reforms, as well as the lack of harmonization of the frameworks and regulations about the genetic modifications results in all those expected benefits of using genetically modified crops being suspended. However, it is obvious that the evolution of genetically modified products is not going to stop. For that reason, research on the impact of genetic modification on medical technologies, agricultural production, commodity prices, land use and on the environment in general, should therefore continue.

Introduction and background

Biotechnology has developed many procedures that specialize in genetic recombination; the attempt to move genes from one organism to another or to change the genes present in a specific organism results in the expression of new attributes that originally were not there. The above procedures that allow gene alterations of a food or an organism result in Genetically Modified (GM) food or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). The concept of gene altering has initiated many debates, with one side criticising the unknown effects and risks on both public health and the environment, and the other supporting the genetic modification's benefits on economy and hunger elimination. This article attempts a literature review on Genetically Modified Products, and specifically the possible risks that they pose, the benefits of their production and use, as well as some basics concepts that have been described and analyzed in current published writings.

Possible risks of using genetically modified products

Environmental Hazards

There is strong evidence that genetically modified plants appear to interact with their environment [ 1 ]. This means that genes introduced into genetically modified plants may be transferred to other plants or even to other organisms in the ecosystem [ 2 - 3 ]. Gene transfer between plants, especially among related plants, results in genetic contamination and is carried out by the transport of pollen [ 4 ]. Because natural wild plant varieties are likely to have a competitive disadvantage against genetically modified crops, they may not be able to survive, resulting in the reduction or disappearance of wild varieties [ 5 ]. Changing biodiversity worldwide will result in increased resistance of several species of weeds, others to dominate and others to decline or disappear, thus creating a complete and general deregulation in ecosystems [ 6 ]. It is a common belief in scientific circles that research needs to be continued to assess the risks and benefits of crops more accurately and adequately.

Risks to Human Health

There may be allergenic effects - especially in people who are predisposed to allergies - or other adverse effects on human health [ 7 ]. Experimental studies in animals have shown weight gain, changes in the pancreas and kidneys, toxic effects to the immune system, changes in blood biochemistry among other effects [ 8 , 9 ]. Moreover, the lack of large-scale long-term epidemiological studies that lead to safe conclusions about the allergenic effects of genetically modified plants makes researchers skeptical about the use of genetically modified products. This is because the introduction of a gene that expresses a non-allergenic protein does not mean that it will produce a product without allergenic action. Also, allergies from genetically modified products may be more intense and dangerous, as the allergenic potential of these foods is stronger than that of conventional plants [ 10 , 11 ].

Resistance to Antibiotics

We must note from the outset that the use of antibiotic-resistant genes has stopped in most mutated products. The main problem now lies in the widespread use of antibiotics in feed which, as a natural consequence, end up in the human body through the consumption of dairy products and meat, and thus create resistant germs in the human digestive system [ 12 ]. However, more research and studies are needed to determine the differences between transgenic plants from traditional plants and whether genetically modified plants pose additional risks to the consumer public [ 13 , 14 ].

Benefits of using genetically modified products

Hunger Elimination

One of the arguments put forward by advocates of genetically modified products is to eliminate world hunger, a perception that has encountered various reactions [ 15 - 16 ]. A series of extensive and long-term research has shown that the benefits of growing genetically modified crops in the fight against global food shortages and hunger have been significant. The steady increase in the global population has led researchers to focus on the benefits of developing genetically modified products, rather than the potential risks they pose each time [ 17 ].

Economic Benefits

A number of studies show the economic benefits of using genetically modified products. Between 1996 and 2011, farmers' income worldwide increased by $92 million from the use of genetically modified crops. Part of the revenue is due to the more efficient treatment of weeds and insects, while another part is due to lower overall production costs. The greatest economic benefits have been achieved in the US, Argentina, China and India, while at the same time, production costs have fallen sharply [ 18 ]. At this point, however, there are conflicting reports [ 19 ].

Insect Resistance

Bacillus thuringiensis (or BT) is a Gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacterium, commonly used as a biological pesticide. During sporulation, many BT strains produce crystal proteins (proteinaceous inclusions), called δ-endotoxins, that have insecticidal action. This has led to their use as insecticides, and more recently, to genetically modified crops using BT genes, such as BT corn. The main target of these plants is to combat the European Corn Borer insect which is responsible for the destruction of maize crops with a loss of up to one billion dollars a year [ 20 ].

Nematode Resistance

Parasitic nematodes are responsible for much of the crop losses. They attack many different plants by destroying the root system. Nematodes, which are essentially a worm species, survive in the soil in very difficult conditions for many years. Chemical control of nematodes is prohibited because there is a high environmental risk. The only natural way to deal with this is through crop rotation (the practice of growing a series of dissimilar or different types of crops in the same area in sequenced seasons), but this is often not possible due to the high financial cost [ 21 ]. Thus, the introduction of genes from nematode-resistant plants seems to be the only way to deal with the problem [ 22 ]. 

Resistance to Herbicide Round Up

It is common ground that the use of herbicides and pesticides in general causes serious problems for the environment and, consequently, for human health. We know that in areas where wheat is cultivated, that is, where the use of herbicides is increased, the number of child births is clearly decreasing, complications in childbirth occur, and children are born with serious health problems mainly related to mental retardation and autism spectrum [ 23 ]. Genetically modified products enable farmers to use a smaller amount of herbicides. Genetically modified soy beans produce an enzyme resistant to the action of the herbicide. The herbicide Round Up destroys the action of a plant enzyme, thereby destroying the plant. Genetically modified plants, however, produce a glyphosate-insensitive form of this enzyme, making it resistant and not affected by the action of the herbicide [ 24 - 25 ]. Researchers are divided on the effects on human health and animals [ 26 ].

Cold Resistance

An important advantage of genetically modified plants is the creation of varieties that are resistant to cold temperatures that would normally result in the plant freezing and destroying the plant, thereby losing production. Since the mid-2010s, because of the rapid global change in climate and because plants cannot adapt to rapid temperature changes, scientists have turned to transgenic plants to address the problem [ 27 ].

Heat Resistance

In the near future, continuous global warming (as scientists at least claim) will have disastrous consequences for plants, especially in areas where water shortages are already occurring. Creation of modified genes (Sh2 and Bt2) can help plants withstand high temperatures [ 28 - 29 ].

Basic concepts related to genetically modified products

The Notion of Substantial Equivalence

The concept of substantive equivalence has been introduced in the debate on genetically modified products to ensure that these foods are safe [ 30 ]. The principle of substantive equivalence holds that if the genetically modified product contains substantially equivalent ingredients present in the conventional product, then no further safety rules are required. In this way the principle of substantial equivalence is a method of evaluating genetically modified products and finding negative factors (such as allergens due to the presence of new proteins) [ 31 , 32 ].

The Precautionary Principle

According to the precautionary principle, any new genetically modified product should not be made available to consumers unless there is first-hand evidence that the product is safe or if there are serious conflicts and conflicting opinions of researchers on the safety of the product in question [ 33 ]. Many researchers, however, have argued that the precautionary principle can act as a deterrent to the evolution of science and society, as it may stop or delay any new technology which is capable of solving environmental or economic problems [ 34 ]. We should note, however, that criticisms have been raised about the utility and the way the precautionary principle works [ 35 ].

The Safeguard Clause

The safeguard clause allows Member States of the European Union to prevent the circulation and sale of genetically modified products which may be harmful to citizens [ 36 ].

The Cartagena Protocol

The purpose of this document is to protect the world's biodiversity by instituting stringent rules on the transfer of genetically modified products from one country to another [ 37 ].

Labeling of Genetically Modified Products

The appearance of genetically modified products has resulted in the need for labeling of these products [ 38 ]. Genetically modified foods should have a special label indicating that they contain genetically modified ingredients. However, as simple as it sounds, the issue of genetically modified products labeling is particularly complex and difficult, as there are important questions about how labeling will be done [ 39 ]. For example, it has been argued that products containing either modified protein or foreign DNA should bear a special label. However, there are genetically modified products that do not contain modified protein or foreign DNA, so there is the debate whether these foods, although modified, require special labeling or not. [ 40 ].

Ethical Concerns

The key ethical issue regarding the cultivation of genetically modified plants is that the creation of these crops is essentially an interference with the natural flow of life. The ethical dilemma arises as to how to find the middle ground in the use of genetically modified products, given that different countries have different perceptions of the importance of risk, with many countries banning the use of genetically modified products, while companies producing these products focus on profits, and do not take into account the problems that may or may not arise. The problem here focuses on the high degree of uncertainty about the impact of using genetically modified organisms, while the arrangements proposed are usually shaped by financial and political interventions [ 41 ]. Consumer attitude is also of particular importance, as consumers are buying and paying their vote of approval at the same time. Consumers are divided into two categories, the consumers who favor the genetically modified organisms and those who oppose them. Consumers' views are influenced by the information they are offered each time, the existing regulations, the confidence they have in the government in regulating the issues that arise, and what they are prepared to pay [ 42 ].

Ethics and the Environment

Environmental ethics plays a dominant role in discussions concerning biotechnology and genetic engineering, as many of the arguments presented against genetic engineering have to do with whether it is morally right to genetically modify organisms and the environment, as this may have serious environmental impacts. This shift is evident even in product ads, where companies say environmental protection is a priority for them [ 43 ].

Ethics and Animal Rights

Specifically with regard to animals, modern ethical and philosophical considerations hold that animals, like humans, have rights and that these rights should in no way be violated [ 44 ]. Animals need to be treated as living organisms and not as commodities or human services. Introducing genes into animals and carrying out experiments can lead to drastic changes in the physiology and behavior of the animal. The results may not be desirable, and in some cases, they may even be disastrous [ 45 ].

Patenting Living (Genetically Modified) Organisms

The creation of new organisms inevitably leads to the need to register them and allocate their ownership. But even in the case of registration of a novel product, the 'owner' of the new organism must ensure that the genetic modification does not cause undesirable effects to the environment and humans, as he will be responsible for any problems that may arise [ 46 ].


In recent years there has been enormous technological progress in the creation of genetically modified organisms. There is no doubt that in the future there will be a continuum that will be influenced by both scientific developments and public attitudes towards genetically modified organisms. Creating genetically modified organisms, however, does not proceed without conflicts; there are the disputants of genetically modified organisms who see their production as a manipulation of life, as well as conflicts regarding the risks to the environment and human health. Even though, it is obvious that the evolution of genetically modified crops is not going to stop. Research on the impact of genetically modified crops on agricultural production, commodity prices, land use and the environment in general should therefore continue. Additionally, it is necessary to inform the consumer in order to understand the role of modern technology in crops and agricultural production, and in particular to understand the importance of genetic modifications. In any case, there should be strict and enforceable rules for the use of genetically modified organisms, an assessment of the potential risks of genetically modified crops and clear references to the effects and the results of genetic modifications, both on the environment and on human health.

Whether individuals are okay with it or not, we live in a world today where genetically modified foods (GMOs) are everywhere. What is meant by this is that unless an individual only eats organic foods day in and day out, he or she is invariably putting GMOs into his or her mouth every day. After becoming cognizant of this actuality, individuals often worry that they might not be buying the correct and safest products for their families. Therefore, it is imperative that all individuals become aware of the pros and the cons that come with GMOs. (WebMD)

To start off, individuals must come to grasps that at this time and age, it would be increasingly difficult to live a life eating only foods that do not contain GMOs. While this may seem alarming to some, there must be room for clarification as to what exactly are the purposes for GMOs. Often times, food is genetically modified for simple reasons, such as to grow grapes without seeds inside of them. However, other times, modifications are much more drastic, such as changing the color or the taste of a specific pepper. What this means is that scientists are able to acquire a desired taste by combining science with nature.

Despite the fact that there have been a variety of tests by the Food Administration in order to ensure that the food that farmers are growing is safe, there have been numerous reports where the food has not been reported in pristine condition. In general, it has been found that the consumption of a variety of foods with GMOs have been proven to increase the likelihood of an individual developing a food-based allergy. While this is not something grave, it is certainly something that should be taken a look at, given that a food that is being produced deliberately directly affects someone’s personal life. Genetically modified foods should not be regarded as dangerous, for individuals would never produce something that puts someone else’s life at risk. However, one should be cautious about what she decides to consume because of the fact that one does not always know what is inside the food that is being consumed.

A setback about producing GMOs is the fact that they do not have much economic value. This is due to the manner in which GMOs take just as long to grow as normal fruits and vegetables, amongst other foods. What this means is that there is no increase in production, so farmers do not have the ability to distribute their merchandise at faster pace. Perhaps the only advantage that GMOs would have within a market is that fact that they would prove to be great competition against other distributors. Other than that, however, GMOs could prove to be incredibly unprofitable.

An upside to GMOs is that often times, they contain more nutrients than the ordinary, unmodified product. This happens because when the fruits and/or vegetables are being modified, new nutrients must be injected into the foods in order to ensure that the foods will indeed be modified.

It is imperative that all individuals become aware of the pros and the cons that come with GMOs. Because of the fact that not many people are aware of what exactly they are putting into their mouths, it is the farmer’s and distributor’s responsibility that they are able to provide individuals with the best product that is available. One’s safety should never be put at risk just so that a profit can be made from selling something that will only make individuals sick. Therefore, individuals should be more wary of what they put into their mouths and consume.

Many people are starving all over the world due to food scarcity, and some are suggesting that one way of combatting this global phenomenon is through modifying the genetics of food. While scientifically enhancing food elements might be an effective way to expand food resources, I disagree that it would do much in terms of curbing worldwide hunger because this scientific innovation will most likely only benefit countries with financial capabilities and ultimately still leave the poorest of the poor lacking food.

Modifying the DNA structure of food offers endless possibilities to humans. Unbeknownst to some people, this innovation is not new and has been used for a long time to grow fruits without seeds as an example. If we move forward with this innovation, we can increase the number of plants we grow, or decrease the harvesting time needed for fruits to ripen. As a result, there would be more food for people to consume. 

However, despite its potential, the cost is one reason why this practice is not implemented worldwide. Genetically modifying food is an expensive process so countries that are already struggling financially to feed their citizens, will not be able to afford this kind of technology. Poverty-stricken societies, mostly living in third-world countries with little to no access to sophisticated innovations, will remain hungry, thereby, not solving this global dilemma. A similar example is vertical farming. This agricultural innovation allows fruits and vegetables to be grown in tall buildings, but despite its tangible benefits to the environment, most countries fail to adopt this technology due to budget. The same can be said in terms of food genetics.

In conclusion, although the modification of food genetics can increase food resources, this does not mean that the benefit will extend to poor countries, and the poor with no budget to keep up with this technology will continue to starve. Therefore, governments all over the world should get involved and look into a more practical way of dealing with famine.

World population and dependent rate is increasing daily so, the biggest challenge is to produce adequate foods. Some people think that genetically modify foods is a good option. I agree with this because, genetically improved foods can produce more harvest, adhere to different weather condition and also produce it in short duration. In the past, usually people grow two or three seasons in every year. So that was enough for their consumption throughout the year. Due to higher population and different food choices, it has more demand for foods nowadays. As a result, many countries enhanced their testing and invest more money for genetic improvements. It has been shown great success so far and, we can see those foods are now in the supermarkets. If I take my country as an example, Sri Lankan has been working two seasons each year those days. But nowadays they produce some foods all over the year because of the genetic improvements. Genetically modified foods can adhere to the different weather conditions and produce more harvest than traditional foods. Some people discuss the bad effects of the heretical improvements. Even though we all know it has bad effects, we have no choice to reject it. Still we have the choice to purchase organic foods. But those are more expensive, and everyone cannot afford those in daily basis. If I take chicken meat as an example, it has higher demand, and we cannot fulfill the demand without changing DNA. In These days chicken meat can produce within 45 days. Finally, even though it has some bad effects genetically modified food is a good option unless we find another good way to feed hungry people.

Food scarcity is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Some people advocate that genetically modified foods can be a viable solution to this problem. From my perspective, this might pose some risk, however, I am largely in agreement with this suggestion. To begin with, why I believe that modified organisms might be the key component of this issue, modified organisms are basically made with altering DNA sequences by genetic engineers, therefore this approach offers endless possibilities to humans. To illustrate this, by changing the DNA structure of food, an upward trend can be maintained in the nutrition levels which food contains, as a result, people who have access to an only limited amount of food might not be suffered from malnutrition a problem which even leads to death. What is more, these changes in genetic material might improve the yield of food, thus with less labour, more people can obtain these valuable nourishments. Moving onto the reason why I claim this might not be an effective solution to hunger, even today most people are not dying from the shortage of food, they are dying on account of the inequity in access to food. Even genetic engineering solved this lack of food problem, this solution will be only available to people who can afford it, hence poverty-stricken people will keep dying from undernourishment.

All in all, what can be concluded from the aforementioned remarks that although genetic engineering might solve this lack of food problem, there will be people who cannot afford it.

Over the decades, the advancement of technology increased giving rise for many innovations such as foods which are genetically engineered. Nowadays one of the most important problem faced by the world is food shortage. Few people think that a good solution for this would be genetically modified foods. In my opinion, I believe with the increase of food shortage, the new type of agriculture will be much beneficial.

All around the world, especially many countries in Africa is going though food shortage, where people are starving of hunger each day with no way to getting access to healthy foods. With the introduction of genetically engineered food, lives of these peoples will change massively. Modified food types are been altered to contain all the nutrients such as vitamins and minerals which the body is required in-order to stay healthy making the population healthier than ever before.

With regards to governments, it would be easier to cultivate these types of foods due to reasons for which to grow they require controlled environments which may also result in less labour. The prices may drop with less labour going into production and less resources needed than normal agriculture. Furthermore, extensive number of researches and tests have been conducted with some still going on, the data of these have proven that the newly innovated agriculture food sources show no side effects and risks to the human body.

In conclusion, with the help of genetically engineered foods the shortage of foods around world may drop and populations will be healthier than ever before and governments should promote and fund these types of new innovations.

While one of the major challenges faced in the 21st century is that of food availability, some believe that genetically engineered crops are a potential solution for the same. I completely back this idea as hybrid crops can be grown in odd weather and are resistant to some diseases.

The primary reason why hybrid plants contributes to food security is that they can be grown in unfavorable environments. This is to say that crops are seasonal and its yield depends on weather conditions, thus, some crops can be grown under controlled climatic conditions such as in poly houses. As a result, not only the yield of the crops is enhanced but also food is available throughout the year. To cite an example, Dubai has reduced its food dependency on imports by 30 percent as they are able to cultivate crops in a desert using hybrid crops grown in a maintained environment. Thus, countries are becoming self-sufficient in the terms of food security and are reducing malnutrition problems in their nations.

Another reason is that genetically modified crops are resistant to some natural diseases such as fungal attacks and their regeneration time is reduced. As the new plants can withstand natural attacks and can reproduce in minimal amount of time, farmers prefer sowing of hybrid plants. Subsequently, the requirement of pesticide use has taken a backseat while the income of farmers has increased, thereby, hybrid plantation is encouraged by farmers. Therefore, getting a sight of winter vegetables in summers is not a big surprise nowadays like carrots in tropical countries like India. For instance, a report published in the editorial section of the Washington post by editor-in-chief Martin Baron in 2015 revealed that genetically enhanced crops has aided the USA to achieve its targets for food safety and security by 50 percent.

To encapsulate, it can be concluded that as the demand of food is rising across the globe, use of hybrid crops is a good solution. I believe they are harvested in all the seasons and their yield is increased over the years since they are prone to natural diseases. Hence, all the nations must encourage farmers to adopt new crops for cultivation in order to resolve food crisis in their country.

One of the most important issues facing the world today is a shortage of food and some think genetically modified foods are a possible solution. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

A highly controversial issue today in the air is apropos with paucity of foods. Some people assert that genetically engineered checkbox is a valid way to cover it as well as has sparkling debate on other side too. This essay looks on the both side. However, I am in side with those decrying propagation of an advancement.

Many people in argue with agricultural development with alternation of old food considerably outweigh its merits.There are numerous countries are suffering from poverty and starving of grains such as Africa and NZ. Reproductive method can bring active change and prosperity. This factor can reduce the labour costs which alternatively government can use for production and cultivation process. Due to climate change and environmental issues farmers are unable to feed their pockets ; This remarkable solution leads in their favour too. Every people today are dimly aware of dangerous future with trade depression and dearness where refashioning process can become beneficial for government and community as well.

On contrary point , in the such cases if the results won’t meet with the expectations then situations become more cruel. It is also possible to say that modified process can loose such vitamins and minerals from the original food which is unhealthy. Going with an advancement of moderate lifestyle it raising the scope of side effects and even leads to death also.

In recent decades, the lack of foods is becoming a massive problem worldwide. Using genetically modified foods (GMO) can be treated as one of the best methods to tackle this issue.

The primary reason for using GMO foods is that they provide an alternative option for farmers to produce at a lower cost. In fact, the production of GMO foods should require less freshwater, fewer pesticides compare to conventional crops. As a result, the farmers may produce the same number of foods at much less price. Furthermore, the price of modified foods also can be attracted to buyers as it can provide cheaper options from them. It can be seen in many developing countries such as Ethiopia or Madagascar, where locals can purchase GMO foods at a reasonable price as the price is 15% less than traditional foods.

Another reason is that genetically modified foods can provide better nutrients to consumers. Due to the research from New York times, thanks to the combination among various kind of foods, it has created the new types of African crops have much more vitamins than traditional crops. It has brought a huge opportunity to farmers in regions where people suffer from nutritional deficiencies. Chad Republic, for example, is one of the poorest countries in Africa, where it does not have much soil with enough nutrients for cultivation. Based on new types of GMO foods, Chad’s national economy has grown massively for the last decade.

In conclusion, the growth of GMO foods is provided the new opportunity for farmers in business world. At the same time, its foods can also bring a higher quality of nutrients to customers

Overpopulation is one of the most challenging issues among others like globalization, climate change, and deforestation. Around 40 years ago the experts implemented a new project to solve the problem, they initiated to grow GM foods. In the last couple of years, GMO veggies and fruits were spread all over the planet. Many people speak about the negative and positive sides of GM foods, but no one knows what is best for human health.  The primary reason why GM food was created was hunger in undeveloped countries. A couple of decades have passed the problem still exists. In fact, the poor countries are getting poorer and developed countries are refusing consumption of such kinds of food. For instance, in Europe, it is forbidden to plant GM vegetables and fruits due to protect the ecosystem. Furthermore, bumblebees and other insects do not eat GM food eventually, do not pollinate the environment. This became a serious question for scientists putting the entire continent in danger.  In addition, GM foods are new to human DNA, meaning we do not know how they affect our bodies in long term. 30 years of observation seems to be not enough to answer the solid questions. Food is fuel and people are extremely careful what they put inside, even though GM foods cost noticeably affordable some people still prefer to buy organic food.  In conclusion, nowadays GM foods are presented in many countries as alternatives. However not every country is considering GM foods healthy nutrition. In addition, hundreds of doctors believe that GM food was not researched enough. Only time can tell what are consequences. I personally believe that GM foods are not the best solution, it is significant that businesses and government work together and carry on studying these types of foods.

Some people claim that genetically modified foods are the viable solution to curbing the hunger issue throughout the world. Although I agree with this viewpoint, I believe some measures in changing people’s perspective toward these foods should be done in advance.

There is an assumption that scientifically enhanced foods will reduce the problem of food scarcity since one commonly cited advantage of these foods is their mass production as well as their longer shelf life that grossly contributes to alleviating hunger worldwide, especially in poorer countries. In other words, these crops are more abundant, cheaper, and last longer than conventional agricultural products, so they do not decay before reaching the consumer. Moreover, they are more resistant to harmful insects, parasites, and fungi, making them more appealing in terms of mentioned issues and particularly for nations with outdated farming methods.

Nevertheless, there are a number of significant negative points to these nascent types of food, the first of which is their unknown potential dire repercussions to our health. Some studies have declared that these foods will eventually affect our organisms adversely since they have not been used for so long, so their consequences will be flagged up in upcoming decades. Furthermore, not inclined are most people to eat these foods because they prefer those that have not been tampered with in laboratories. Thus, they do not currently help reduce famine throughout the globe, which is a drawback. Should they assist in decreasing starvation rates, the public has to be psychologically persuaded to consume them beforehand by informing them about their benefits.

In conclusion, I support modifying the genetics of food as one of the feasible helpful steps that can be taken to combat the global concern of food shortage, however, more research as well as notifying about their positive side to the society is needed.

Genetically modified foods started being commercially sold in 1994, but the development and research of them started about 30 years ago. The process to create these foods is called genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is the modification of an organism’s phenotype by manipulating its genetic material. This process can be done multiple ways, but the most popular way and the way that most genetically modified foods are made is by a process of recombination. Recombination “is simply a sophisticated version of a cut-and-paste operation. Once the desired gene is identified in the native organism’s genome, it can be cut out, transferred to the target plant, and pasted into its genome” (“Genetically Modified Foods” 2013). This process is used to produce certain characteristics that is plant doesn’t naturally have, by taking the characteristics from another plant. This can be used to enhance the crops resistance to herbicides and/ or allow it to survive in harsher environments, in return allowing an increase in crop yield. The first genetically modified food to be made was the FlavrSavr tomato in 1994, genetically modified to slow down the ripening process of the tomato and thus prevent it from softening, while still allowing it to retain its natural color and flavor. Since then, the production of genetically modified foods has sky rocked, the United States being the top producer. “The USA continued to be the largest producer of biotech crops in the world, with a global market share of ~40%. The USA planted a record hectarage of 73.1 million hectares featuring eight biotech crops (maize, soybean, cotton, canola, sugar beet, alfalfa, papaya, and squash) in 2014” (Huang 2017). The United States is pumping genetically modified foods out by the second, whereas normally producing the most is good, in this case, it is a bad thing. The process to create genetically modified foods, also creates many health risks that come along with them.

Consuming genetically modified foods can become harmful due to the high toxicity amounts in the foods. After genetically modified foods were introduced in the United States a few decades ago, people independently reported toxic effects caused by GMOs. The toxicity of these modified foods is the result of genetic modification techniques and the process used to make genetically modified crops. “…Most, if not all, of these crops contain com-pounds that are potentially toxic or allergenic. In most cases, these compounds have probably evolved to provide protection against animal grazers or pathogenic micro-organisms and it is therefore not surprising that they are also toxic to humans” (Halford and World Scientific 2012). Genetically modified foods have increased in their levels of toxins in order to allow for longer lifespan by creating a plant that will harm an animal if it tries to eat it. But the real question is, if producers are increasing the toxicity to prevent animals from eating them, then why are humans eating them? These high levels of toxicity have been proven to create damage inside the digestive tract. A study conducted with rats showed 7 out of 20 developed stomach lesions that could potentially lead to life endangering hemorrhages. Another study where mice were fed potatoes found abnormal and damaged cells, as well as proliferative cell growth in their small intestine (“Genetically modified Foods: Toxins and Reproductive Failures” 2017). Not only will the toxicity affect the digestive tract but is also proven to affect the liver. The liver is the main detoxifier for the body therefore it would become damaged when more toxicity than normal is present. Multiple studies had been completed with rats and rabbits, where they were fed different genetically modified foods. In return, their livers had either changed in size (shrunk or became inflamed) or developed lesions. (“Genetically Modified Foods: Toxins and Reproductive Failures” 2017). Due to the high levels of toxicity in genetically modified foods, these foods could be harming individuals when consumed, and they are unware of it.

Along with high toxicity levels, these foods have increased in herbicide use which has dangerous side effects for consumers. Herbicide is a substance that is toxic to plants and is used to destroy unwanted vegetation. “The three major GMO crops in the U.S. – corn, soybeans, and cotton – have increased overall herbicide use by more than 527 million pounds between 1996 – 2011, compared to what it likely would have been in the absence of GMO crops” (Hirshberg 2013). Genetically modified crops are sprayed with herbicides that kill all the plants in the field other than that genetically modified crop. At first glance this process seems to work: most of the weeds die, and the crops survive. But the few weeds that barely survive the chemical onslaught, reproduce. Over time, this process ends up favoring the most difficult weeds to kill, known as “superweeds”. To manage these “superweeds” more and more herbicide is required. To combat these resistant weeds, companies are seeking approval of genetically modified crops that are resistant to higher risk herbicides. Not only are crop producers wanting to use more herbicides, but stronger ones. When genetically modified crops are consumed with these high levels of herbicides on them, they can cause herbicide poisoning, and depending on the amount it can be mild or severe and can lead to death and/ or cancer.

Genetically modified foods are causing an increase in food allergies. Food allergy is defined as a harmful health effect raised by a specific immune response that reproducibly occurs on exposure to a given food (Huang 2017). Food allergies are a difficult issue since nearly any food is capable of causing an allergic reaction. If a person is allergic to soy, they will also be allergic to genetically modified soy. Genetically modified foods carry a risk of triggering life-threatening allergic reactions and are contributing to higher allergy rates. The labeling of genetically modified foods have helped solve some of this problem but not all of it.

Genetically modified foods are not monitored as strictly as they should be, considering all the health problems they can cause. The FDA works with the EPA and the USDA to regulate genetically modified crops, but how well are they being modified. The FDA policy places responsibility on the producer or manufacturer to assure the safety of these food. Not only is the FDA not directly testing the safety of these foods but there is currently no set way to test the safety of them. “The existing FDA safety requirements impose a clear legal duty on everyone in the farm to table continuum to market safe foods to consumers, regardless of the process by which such foods are created… FDA’s role is to ensure that everyone in the farm to table continuum is meeting this obligation” (“Food from Genetically Engineered Plants – How FDA Regulates… Engineered Plants” 2018). The FDA believe that these modified foods are not materially different from non-genetically modified foods and if it was up to them, they would not require them to be label. This means that they are not monitoring them as strictly as they need to be because they consider them to cause little to no harm just like the non-genetically modified foods. Before 2016, genetically modified foods were not required to be labeled but the government passed the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling act of 2015 that requires the Food and Drug Administration to regulate the distribution and labeling of these foods. “The FDA may require a GMO food to have a label that informs consumers of a material difference between the GMO food and a comparable food if the disclosure is necessary to protect public health and safety or to prevent the label from being false or misleading.” (United States Congress 2015). Although the FDA doesn’t see a difference between these foods, the government does and therefore are making all genetically modified foods have a label that allows the consume rs to know the difference between the modified and non-modified comparable food. Although the government has placed stricter laws on these foods, the FDA is the ones monitoring the safety of them. And if the FDA thinks genetically modified foods are not materially different, then they are not going to monitor them any different than before.

Genetically modified foods are a very controversial topics and people have taken both sides of the argument of whether or not they harm consumers. Many people are for genetically modified foods because of little evidence scientist can conclude about these foods leaves the producers and manufacturers saying they are safe. “These companies fight, tooth and nail, against labeling. The fast food industry fought against giving you the calorie information. They fought against telling you if there is trans-fat in your food. The meat packing industry for years prevented country-of-origin labeling. They fought not to label genetically modified foods; and now 70% of processed food in the supermarket has some genetically modified ingredient. (Kenner, Robert, et al 2008). These companies will lie about anything in order to sell their product. So why believe them when they say these foods are safe, and FDA just takes their word for it? The problem surrounding the safety of genetically modified foods is that it is inhumane to conduct a study on humans to see the results these foods have on the human body. Therefore, producing these foods for the public creates a worldwide clinical trial of genetically modified foods, where humans are the guinea pigs. Scientists won’t be able to determine the all the side effects of these foods until they have been consumed for 100 years, and right now they have only been consumed for 20 years. Within these 20 years genetically modified foods have been questions many and many of times so just imagine the questions that will come up over the next 80 years. Until then scientist have been conducting studies with animals similar to us to see the effects of these foods, and what they have found so far all points to how harmful these foods are.

Genetically modified foods are unsafe to the public consumers and therefore should be placed under stricter regulation. Due to the high levels of toxicity and the herbicide use these foods are causing internal harm to the consumers. These foods can lead to damage of the digestive tract and liver, cancer, and even death. Genetically modified foods are, also, causing a rise in food allergies that can become dangerous to the consumer Until these foods are banned and/ or stricter laws are placed on them, then genetic modification will continue to dictate the food industry and be a silent killer.

The human population has rapidly increased since the turn of the 20th Century, which has presented problems in maintaining an adequate food supply for the world’s population. To meet this challenge, genetically modified crops are an increasingly important tool, although there are also other technologies that could be used in their place.

Genetically modified (GM) crops offer a valuable solution that can reduce starvation in the face of a growing human population. These crops may be subject to a range of modifications, including drought resistance, salt tolerance and increased yield. This means that not only can more areas be cultivated which are currently unusable due to harsh environmental conditions, but the amount of food can also be increased. Clearly, this technology affords an opportunity to meet future food requirements and should therefore be widely employed.

However, it would be a mistake to assume that GM crops offer the only solution. Of the alternative techniques available, vertical farming is among the most compelling. In vertical farming systems, plants are grown in large stacked systems under controlled conditions. This has a similar impact on yield to GM crops and allows crops to be grown more widely. In many arid regions, this is being combined with desalination to ensure local food security and reduce reliance on food imports. While expensive, it would not be particularly difficult to roll this technology out in other areas where local food supplies are inadequate, offering a viable alternative to genetically modified crops.

In conclusion, genetically modified food is certainly a useful tool to combat hunger, and the technology should be used more widely. However, saying such crops are essential is an overstatement, given the availability of alternative cultivation systems that could solve the same problem.

Experts and studies have argued for and against the consumption of certain food types based on systematic information to support and oppose the consumption of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, respectively. This debate has been going on for a while. Consuming organic and natural foods grown without pesticides during planting, pest management, or storage has long been associated with healthy eating. Many nutritionists believe that eating GMO foods hurts a person’s health and that they can increase the size of other body organs and cause cancer. Additionally, the production and consumption of GMO foods have been linked to three medical conditions, according to the WHO (World Health Organization). These include gene duplication, outcrossing, and allergies. GMO foods were created to increase food production and protect food. Still, they have instead improved other health, environmental, and financial problems, making them more dangerous to human existence than beneficial (Levitsky, 2016). While GM crops may have some evident advantages, I think they generally pose more risks. Before its use expands, long-term research should be conducted because their influence may be so significant and irreversible.

My major concern when trying to choose the side of the problem is to know whether the product is safe or not for the health of human beings. When talking about GMO products, we all know that the foods that have been genetically altered are also unnatural. However, they could be harmful to human health and the environment, and they have a detrimental cascading effect that affects domestic animals. The main benefit of GMOs is just the financial gain that comes from increased production, decreased pesticide and herbicide consumption, and the preference by many consumers due to improved tastes and longer shelf lives. Before fully embracing the idea of cultivating GMO crops, it is vital to take safety precautions even though there has not been any conclusive evidence of their effects.

Secondly, it is important to know if the products used bring harm to the environment in which we are living. However, after the development and distribution of crops that can withstand harsh conditions, such as floods and drought, GMOs are intended to improve food security. Environmental change and global warming are the main causes of that. Many farmers will profit when GMO foods are made public. However, this will increase the reliance on international corporations to supply pesticides and seed goods, which will be costly for small-scale farmers (Levitsky, 2016). As a result, we can conclude that farmers’ future financial situations will be unknown because they will have to spend more money on chemicals and seed supplies than they would have if they had not started cultivating GMOs.

In addition, proponents of GMO foods assert that crop anatomists will drastically reduce or eliminate chemicals in managing pests and diseases. This claim benefits large-scale farmers by lowering the enormous costs of purchasing and delivering spraying herbicides and pesticides (Levitsky, 2016). On the other side, growing plants resistant to disease and infestations, especially in broad areas, will promote the growth of weeds and good insects that are typically resistant to pesticides used on crops, necessitating the use of more deadly pesticides to manage the new pests. Vigorous weeds and excellent pests are examples of plant life and pests that are resistant to herbicides and pesticides, necessitating more potent and better pesticides to eradicate them.

Consuming genetically modified foods is unnatural and will eventually hurt a person’s health and well-being. The care of those whose health has been affected by consuming GMO foods would result in unnecessary financial costs. The altered food content may affect a person’s health for some chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes. In summary, growing GMO crops is neither safe for the environment nor suitable for human consumption. Making a firm decision about whether or not GMO foods should be harvested requires further research. After assessing different options, it is evident that the cultivation of GMOs should be discouraged because the results have both short- and long-term positive effects. Governments and international health organizations should lead an expert examination to address concerns about GMO safety, even though it is still a matter of contention between pro- and anti-GMO activists.

Genetically modified (GM) foods contain at least one ingredient coming from a plant with an altered genetic composition.16 Genetic modification, also known as genetic engineering, often introduces new, desirable characteristics to plants, such as greater resistance to pests. Many U.S. crops are grown using genetically engineered seeds, including a large share of the soybean, corn, cotton and canola crop. As a result, the majority of processed foods in the U.S. contain at least one genetically modified ingredient.

Despite the growing use of genetically modified crops over the past 20 years, most Americans say they know only a little about GM foods. And many people appear to hold “soft” views about the health effects of GM foods, saying they are not sure about whether such foods are better or worse for one’s health. When asked which of three positions best fits their viewpoints, about half of Americans (48%) say the health effects of GM foods are no different than other foods, 39% say GM foods are worse for one’s health and one-in-ten (10%) say such foods are better for one’s health


Genetically modified foods are advantageous because they can be used to alleviate hunger around the world, but it is imperative to put focus on the genes/sequences that are inserted to fulfill this objective.

Genetically Modified Organisms ( GMOs ) are organisms whose genetic material ( DNA ) has been modified using genetic engineering techniques.

In agriculture, GMOs are useful to obtain plants with higher yields that show resistance to biotic or abiotic factors (for example, crops that are resistant to drought conditions).

However, it is important to highlight that inserted genes must be carefully selected because GMOs might result harmful to health.

For example, GMO crops resistant to pesticides may result harmful because pesticides are generally based on carcinogenic agents.

In conclusion, genetically modified foods are advantageous because they can be used to alleviate hunger around the world, but it is imperative to put focus on the genes/sequences that are inserted to fulfill this objective.
