Top 5 Minecraft Science Experiments
Sure, the world of Minecraft can be a pretty dark place. Old, abandoned fortresses, strange urban legends , maybe even a Slender Man or two. But the best thing about Minecraft is that it’s effectively a virtual box of LEGOs.
You can build whatever you want. Sprawling castles, underground railways, working computers. And, yeah, you and Steve can even perform your own virtual Minecraft science experiments.
Here are my top five Minecraft science experiments, in no particular order. Disclaimer, though: these may or may not involve actual science. You have been warned.
5. The Elaborate Minecraft Experiment
Okay, so I’m not sure what hypothesis was being put to the test in this one. But YouTube user John Fredrik Rian ordered some science from the science place, and then some really intense stuff happened. And sheep. For science!

What’s the explosive velocity of a TNT block, and how far will it fall? Does water slow the rate at which an object will fall? How about lava? This video answers these questions and more, thanks to Steve_OH’s quest to uncover the scientific secrets of Minecraft’s universe .
3. The Enderman Experiment
What do we really know about the elusive Enderman? These tall, black creatures with purple eyes and long, slender limbs stalk the darker areas of Minecraft, picking up blocks and wandering in a kind of lifeless daze. But one look and they can become a terrible threat.

2. The Large Chicken Collider
Particle accelerators like CERN’s Large Hadron Collider smash particles together in an attempt to recreate the conditions of the early universe. The Large Chicken Collider, on the other hand, smashes chickens together in an attempt to recreate the conditions of…two chickens smashed together.

Doing real science in Minecraft is easy and fun. Start with a question, formulate a hypothesis, design an experiment, and review the results! For example, our friends The Minecraft Scientists ran an experiment designed to answer the question, “Am I more likely to catch fish on rainy days than on clear days (or does it make a difference)?”
They went fishing in Minecraft at the same spot, using the same bait, on 10 clear days and 10 raining days. The data they collected was surprising!
Why not use dinner time to co-design a science experiment to run in Minecraft with your family? If you can’t think of any right off the bat, try one of our Halloween-inspired experiments:

Chemistry in Minecraft
This Minecraft tutorial explains how to use the features of the Chemistry Update with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.
The Chemistry Update was first available in Minecraft Education Edition and has now been added to Minecraft Pocket Edition, Windows 10, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. To try these great Chemistry features in Minecraft, just toggle the Education Edition option in your world. You will be able to craft elements, compounds or perform experiments using the various Chemistry crafting tables.

The Minecraft Cell: Biology Meets Game-Based Learning
Guest blogger Dan Bloom describes how he used Minecraft to reimagine one of his ninth grade biology labs, and offers four steps toward incorporating the game into any curriculum.
Minecraft, the popular sandbox game, is beloved by educators for its use as a learning tool. It enables students to explore, create and imagine in a completely different way than they could ever do in a traditional classroom. The beauty of the game is in the way it unleashes the creativity of both students and teachers.
But for Minecraft novices like me, it's hard to know exactly where to begin unleashing all that creativity. If you're just getting started with Minecraft, it might be helpful to use the game in an activity of your own design. That way, you familiarize yourself with the powerful tools for educators available in MinecraftEdu by building a virtual world for the class to explore before you jump into to using the game as a creative tool for your students.
This semester, I used Minecraft for the first time in my ninth grade science class at Quest to Learn . I decided to incorporate the game into my curriculum to meet a specific learning goal: to aid in students' understanding of our DNA extraction lab. In this lab, students practice a step-by-step technique that involves adding certain chemicals to a mixture of cells in order to break apart the cellular components and isolate the DNA molecules.
Working with a game designer from Institute of Play at my school, we created a valuable cell model in Minecraft that could mimic the real properties of a cell, and the real interactions between a cell membrane and the different chemicals used to extract DNA, which students could experiment with in the game.
If you're considering using Minecraft in your classroom, here are four steps to walk you through incorporating the game into your curriculum.
Step 1: Define the Learning Goals
The reason I chose to use Minecraft as a learning tool was to aid in the students' understanding of our DNA extraction lab. When I did this lab with my students in the past, they walked away with very little understanding as to why they followed those steps and what exactly was happening at a cellular level.
My vision was to create a cell model in Minecraft that students could explore and manipulate. This pre-lab activity would allow them to use different "chemical tools" to break down the various parts of the cell and, in the end, identify a list of materials needed to complete the DNA extraction lab.
Step 2: Create the Mechanics and Build the Virtual World
Though I am a novice to Minecraft, I was able to work closely with a game designer, Claudio, to help create a realistic cell model. Using the MinecraftEdu educator tools, Claudio renamed the Minecraft tools with different chemical names. He also figured out how to make some of the materials susceptible to certain chemical tools, while being impenetrable to others. Once this mechanic was ironed out, we were very quickly able to create the world of the cell.
In the end, we had a single-player, immersive world in which students could explore the inside of a cell while using chemical tools to break through to the DNA. They were using their content knowledge to find the DNA, and they were figuring out which chemicals were necessary to dissolve the components of the cell.
Step 3: Focus the Exploration
I created a student handout to serve as a guide for focusing their exploration. In addition to providing setup instructions to start that exploration, the handout included a checklist for exploring the cell, and questions for students to answer as they interacted with the different chemical tools in the cell.
The purpose of the student handout was to provide them with some sort of direction as they explored, and also to point out connections between the game and our class content that they may not have noticed on their own. We added extra organelles to the model, and we even created a realistic cell membrane that mimics the lipid bilayer found in real membranes. In addition to preparing the students for the upcoming lab activity, this game also served as review for our cells unit.
Step 4: Assess Progress Toward Learning Goals
The questions on the handout also provided a way for me to assess students. I was able to see if they could make connections back to course content (review) while also getting a clear picture of whether they were able to meet the learning goal and identify the chemicals needed for the lab. By the end of the activity, they had a clear understanding of the changes the cell goes through during the DNA extraction lab, and when we actually completed the lab, the students felt comfortable talking about it and could successfully explain why we used each chemical.
The activity was a resounding success. Engagement was at an all-time high. Students who felt weak in science class were able to approach the subject in a way that felt comfortable for them. Some students who were new to Minecraft struggled in the beginning, but quickly picked it up after a brief tutorial from a Minecraft regular.
My students ask me often when we will use Minecraft again. I already have two projects in the works, both involving the use of Minecraft as a creative tool so that students are actually creating something of their own that's unique. Stay tuned to learn more about these projects!

The Final Game Launched On Every PlayStation Console
I’m personally going to force game companies to put in all that stuff you hate, every game in the castlevania dominus collection, ranked.
The idea of science in Minecraft almost seems silly. Sure, things like basic physics still apply, but you can also knock down a tree by punching it with your bare hand. Bringing science into the mix will surely only cause chaos.

But you thrive on chaos, and incorporating the logic of science into Minecraft is a fun challenge that many have risen to try. You can keep it simple with things like better storage. You can build a rocket. You can power an entire island with a nuclear reactor. If you want it, someone's made a mod for it. You just have to find it.
10 Industrial Foregoing
This mod is the definition of "don't have time for the small stuff." Industrial Foregoing doesn't have a progression tree like some other mods. You just gather the supplies and learn how to build the machines. Automate farming, animal husbandry, and even storage, and save yourself time for exploring other amazing mods. You can even automate the process of feeding yourself. Imagine never having to stop to munch on food – but then you lose the fun eating sound. Sacrifices must be made for efficiency.
9 GregTech Community Edition
This compilation of mods is built on player suggestions and the original GregTech. It's extremely resource heavy, so be prepared to spend a lot of time mining. Another mod that might be helpful for it is Thermal Foundation, which allows you to create tools for mining in bulk. Or just bring a lot of pickaxes. It's called Mine craft, after all. From there, you'll build more tools, and furnaces, and eventually work your way up to electricity. Before long, you'll be building grand machines to do all the mining and other work for you, leaving you with time to experiment with all your collected resources. Automation life really is the best kind.
8 Extra Utilities 2
We're going on the grid. Extra Utilities 2 adds a power grid to give your machine and your gameplay a boost. You can make yourself a power manager to keep track of what's actively generating power or what's inactive. Use the sun and the moon to power solar panels and lunar panels, and you'll never have to worry about the time of day. This can get big, uses a lot of different resources (elements, sun, and moon), and is definitely best used outside.
7 Alchemistry
This mod will truly allow your inner nerd to shine. It adds over 950+ items to the game, expanding the roster of available elements. Explore a new variety of ingots, dusts, liquids, nuggets, and plates, and see what you can make. You can even create your very own interactive periodic table. Do you want to play with nuclear power? You can play with nuclear power. But be careful – a nuclear reactor meltdown can be very messy.
6 Advanced Generators
This is a great mod to use alongside mods like Mekanism, Thermal Expansion, Tinker's IO, and Ender's IO. With a few blocks, you can build a generator that can convert fuel into liquid or gas for powering various Minecraft machines. You have full control over turning it on and turning it off (including using a redstone signal to trigger it), and it can convert power to redstone flux, Minecraft jules, or energy units.

You can add tanks to expand the storage space (up to ten), and while the generator will keep generating energy until the tanks are full, it won't output energy until you set it to do so. Worried about an ugly machine messing up your aesthetic? Don't worry – there's no set shape for the Advanced Generator. As long as the blocks are touching, it can do everything. Decorate around it, build it into your decor, or bury it underground; then, you'll never have to see it. It's a small but versatile mod.
5 Flux Networks
Need to move power and don't want to deal with making and putting down cables? There's a mod for that. Flux Networks uses a combination of vanilla materials to create a basic wireless system that will carry power from one point to another or more as you expand and learn more about the mod.

The resources can be hard to get – obsidian, eyes of ender, and redstone. But they're worth it in the long run for saving time and getting power around the world and through other dimensions.
4 Portality
Portals are convenient. Wouldn't it be great if we could have portals everywhere? Good news – you can have that with Portality . Travel across the world in seconds using one portal that can be programmed to go anywhere you want. You can also use them to send items. Need to move a bunch of cobblestone but don't want to go there on your own? Pop a chest module block into the frame and send them on down the proverbial pipe. If you're sharing a portal with friends , you can make certain destinations private to keep your secret hideout safe.
3 Advanced Rocketry
Tired of Minecraft Earth? Aim for the Minecraft stars. Advanced Rocketry will take you into space, where you can set up space stations on other planets, mine, and explore the blocky Minecraft universe and all its wonders. You can even use terraforming on inhabitable planets to create new villages. You'll have to find materials on Earth to build a space station, a rocket, and a launch pad at first, but how hard could that be? It's not rocket science... oh, wait.
2 Compact Machines
Have your elaborate contraptions gotten a little out of control? Do you just want to get things organized and live in peace without having to build a huge base? Compact Machines are one-block portals into a room of various sizes (3x3x3 - 13x13x13), where you can build to your heart's content. Even better, you can break them down and put them in your pocket, then set them up somewhere else, and everything inside will stay intact. Imagine having a pocket-sized lab available at any time. Fun fact, the insides of the machines are almost indestructible. The only thing that can break them is a nuclear reactor meltdown.
Create is an extremely expansive engineering mod with almost endless possibilities. Auto crafting? Got it. Giant moving platforms? Got it. Windmills? Got it. Trains? Those are practically child's play. If you can imagine it, then Create probably has a way to build it. It's amazing to think Minecraft could get any bigger, but this mod makes it happen. Start small with wooden gears, and work your way up to your greatest dreams.

Toggling [ ]
Experimental Gameplay is found in the world options when creating or editing a world. When turning the option on in an existing world, a copy of the world will be created automatically. Turning the option on disables achievements after the world is created. Once the experimental world is created, it cannot be turned off again. Worlds with the experimental on will have an "Experimental" tag right next to the game mode name in the world menu.

The warning message when attempting to play on an experimental world.
The point of Experimental Gameplay is for the player to look at some not-quite-finished features, which could crash, break, or stop working at any point in future updates. When the player attempts to load the experimental world, it will show a warning message before loading it. Attempting to disable experimental gameplay toggle via external tools could also crash and break the world.
