Should Internet Access be Free?

Internet access should be free.

90% of the United States’ adult population uses the internet. Although a clear majority of the US can access the internet, we are also home to a large digital divide. A digital divide means certain population groups do not have equal access to the internet. The consequences of this divide become more dire when we look at the number of resources that have moved online due to COVID-19. While some consider the internet a luxury, a lack of internet today will limit an individual’s opportunities in employment, government services, healthcare, and education. Because so many essentials are online, it’s time to reflect on the internet’s commercialized position.  19% of Americans without internet access said that they were prevented by the cost of internet service. Although some claim that universal internet access would stifle innovation , the competition for government contracts makes up for this. Because  COVID-19 has redefined the internet as an essential utility, internet access is a human right and the United States should provide all citizens with internet access.

Internet Access and COVID-19

The coronavirus continues to prevail in the United States, with over 4.5 million confirmed cases . Individuals are attending doctor’s visits over Zoom, ordering essential household products on Amazon, and socializing during FaceTimes with friends. The most effective way to prevent yourself from becoming infected by COVID-19 is to social distance—and people with stable internet access have the ability to do so. However, those without internet access must attend work in-person, visit stores for household goods and groceries, and attend gatherings to visit friends. But a lack of internet access does not only affect adults-as the US grapples with the challenges of returning to school, many US colleges have moved their fall semesters online. Because as many as 2.3 million students across US public school districts cannot access the internet, schools are being pushed to open at a quicker-than-safe rate. Our digital disparity  pu ts those without internet access in danger because they are unable to obtain essential resources from home . COVID-19 has made it clear that the internet is necessary for our safety, so it should be provided to everybody.

Is the Internet a Human Right?

Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.” This document does not declare that all humans should be guaranteed free access to the internet, just the right to use it. But how can one access the internet when they are barely making enough money to buy food? Right now, the internet is a luxury. Corporations aim to sell internet access for the highest price possible in order to make a profit. The internet may be a “product,” but digital disparities cause a sharp divide in students’ achievements and academic success. 20% of rural students in the US do not have broadband internet at home. 43% of children in low-income households have to do their homework on a cellphone. No “luxury” product should directly impact a child’s opportunity for success. Kerala, an Indian state, plans to provide universal internet access to its 35 million residents, declaring universal access a human right. The United States should follow suit and provide its citizens with universal internet access to ensure its citizens’ well-being and success. 

A common counterargument for implementing free public internet access is a lack of technical progress . Because the internet would be universally provided, internet corporations would no longer fight for consumers through technological progress. However, many internet service providers will fight for the privilege to provide internet to the American people, so technological competition will be stiff.  Private entities will continue to work towards better internet services for the public in competition to receive government contracts for internet services. Progress will continue because companies will not hold a monopoly over public internet access-instead, there will be constant competition for the right to provide it.

Internet access has morphed into an essential utility of the modern age, but it is still treated as a luxury good. Prior to COVID-19, a lack of internet access would prevent children from succeeding in school, or adults from accessing important job opportunities. In the age of the coronavirus, however, those without internet are forced to put themselves through unnecessary risks in order to access necessities. Companies should not sell internet access in search of making a profit-instead, the federal government must provide all citizens with universal internet access. Today, internet access is a human right and we have the ability (and responsibility) to make it a reality in the US.

Internet Access Must Be Limited To Students

In my argumentative essay I discuss if the Internet should be limited to students. It is already limited in terms of restricting students from being able to view websites that promote a conservative point of view, and it is restricted from access to websites on illegal activities. Many colleges have also banned any form of sharing or torrent website, but should Internet be limited even further. Should students be banned completely from seeing the right’s perspective on things?

Many would argue that students are already too heavily restricted from seeing the political right’s point of view, but I feel it should be restricted further. Students should be given the leftist liberal viewpoint and no other. If students are able to go online and see a right-wing opinion, then they may start believing that being right-wing is the best. They may start to think that things such as homelessness matter more than equality. Feelings are not the most important thing on the planet, and students need to understand this, which they may not if they see right-wing material. It is better that students only see leftist websites with no access at all to anything on the right wing, otherwise students may start voting republican instead of democrat. Students are already restricted to mostly leftist reading and research material, but this should be stretched further to ensure no right-wing or middle-political website is available at all. This may also include restrictions on certain social media platforms. If a social media platform is not a strong leftist believer, then that social media platform may have been infected by right-wing brainwashing and is therefore damaging to a student’s mental health. (Powers, 2015)

Maybe Internet access shouldn’t be as limited to things such as adult material in college. After all, students are adults, and adult reproductive acts are common with students. I do not feel that it is so terrible that students see adult content via student Internet services. Obviously, a student should be restricted from viewing such material in classroom unless he or she is working on a project that involves adult material. However, access to such material shouldn’t be restricted when a student uses college Wi-Fi. For example, many students study in their college dorms, and they shouldn’t be restricted from seeing adult material in their college dorms. The human expression of sexuality shouldn’t be removed from the college campus. It restricts the rights of a student if he or she is unable to watch adult material. Student’s freedoms of expression are at risk if a student is unable to see people conducting the act of love. Plus, people may become a little odd if they are not exposed to any sort of adult material, and they may be surprised when they see the real thing. (Latimes, 2016)

The Internet is already restricted in college campuses. Colleges already have restrictions on their Internet services so that students cannot access certain websites. Some of these restrictions come from pressure from publishers who do not want students downloading copyrighted material via college Internet systems. Most restrictions come from the need to restrict what a college student reads and sees in terms of their political ideology. My argumentative essay proved that these restrictions should be extended and strengthened to ensure no student is ever exposed to the right’s point of view, otherwise students will be brainwashed into voting for the right. My essay also proved that students should be allowed to view adult material because they are adults and it is part of their rights of freedom of expression. My essay also showed that current restrictions on criminally motivated websites should probably stay in place because there is no need for students to learn about criminal activity, and some websites may offer dangerous advice on how to become a criminal, and that should be avoided too.

The state policies focus more on eliminating cybercrime, which seem to ruin lives for instance cases where causes of assassination have a connection to mimicked characters in online entertainments. The internet is equally forming a sequence of suicide-related cases and poor studies, especially among the youth.

Depression and suicidal thoughts are higher among the students deemed “internet-addicts” (Eunjung Cha, p.1). According to self-report questionnaires, gender is not a differential factor. Internet addiction was likely to affect males, as well as females and cause children-major depression disorder.

This is arguably the reason why institutions are also not enthusiastic enough to embrace full technological platforms such as digital networks and incorporation of social networks to education systems. They focus on security matters due to potential threats posed by social network technologies.

Current social settings can give the impression that internet usage is under control, but a closer look at the phenomenon indicates that every day a person starts to use and subsequently becomes addicted to the negative aspects available in the net.

Possibly the pressure to resist deception is tremendous and persistent unless there is an intervention, especially by the authorities such as parents when the person involved, is a minor. Sometimes failure to control internet access is due to the current social setting for instance; most of the parents are full-time employees probably looking for the overtime and better remuneration in support of the family.

They may be trying to work out one area while the other collapses. The biggest problem in the majority of the minds lies on the reason why people especially the youth are misusing the internet. The most likely answer is within the family setting. They emulate their parents who are their closest role models.

They embrace the social settings and meet friends who deceive them into engaging in social mischiefs such as pornography, online gambling, and information-hacking activities. They may also suffer from solitary use due to stress. Whichever the case, parents are the most effective cure to the vice. It is the parental responsibility to face the problem and talk out with the teenagers on the dangers involved before things are out of hand.

You might be assigned an argumentative essay as a writing exercise in high school or in a composition class. The prompt will often ask you to argue for one of two positions, and may include terms like “argue” or “argument.” It will frequently take the form of a question.

The prompt may also be more open-ended in terms of the possible arguments you could make.

Argumentative writing at college level

At university, the vast majority of essays or papers you write will involve some form of argumentation. For example, both rhetorical analysis and literary analysis essays involve making arguments about texts.

In this context, you won’t necessarily be told to write an argumentative essay—but making an evidence-based argument is an essential goal of most academic writing, and this should be your default approach unless you’re told otherwise.

Examples of argumentative essay prompts

At a university level, all the prompts below imply an argumentative essay as the appropriate response.

Your research should lead you to develop a specific position on the topic. The essay then argues for that position and aims to convince the reader by presenting your evidence, evaluation and analysis.

  • Don’t just list all the effects you can think of.
  • Do develop a focused argument about the overall effect and why it matters, backed up by evidence from sources.
  • Don’t just provide a selection of data on the measures’ effectiveness.
  • Do build up your own argument about which kinds of measures have been most or least effective, and why.
  • Don’t just analyze a random selection of doppelgänger characters.
  • Do form an argument about specific texts, comparing and contrasting how they express their thematic concerns through doppelgänger characters.

An argumentative essay should be objective in its approach; your arguments should rely on logic and evidence, not on exaggeration or appeals to emotion.

There are many possible approaches to argumentative essays, but there are two common models that can help you start outlining your arguments: The Toulmin model and the Rogerian model.

Toulmin arguments

The Toulmin model consists of four steps, which may be repeated as many times as necessary for the argument:

  • Make a claim
  • Provide the grounds (evidence) for the claim
  • Explain the warrant (how the grounds support the claim)
  • Discuss possible rebuttals to the claim, identifying the limits of the argument and showing that you have considered alternative perspectives

The Toulmin model is a common approach in academic essays. You don’t have to use these specific terms (grounds, warrants, rebuttals), but establishing a clear connection between your claims and the evidence supporting them is crucial in an argumentative essay.

Say you’re making an argument about the effectiveness of workplace anti-discrimination measures. You might:

  • Claim that unconscious bias training does not have the desired results, and resources would be better spent on other approaches
  • Cite data to support your claim
  • Explain how the data indicates that the method is ineffective
  • Anticipate objections to your claim based on other data, indicating whether these objections are valid, and if not, why not.

Rogerian arguments

The Rogerian model also consists of four steps you might repeat throughout your essay:

  • Discuss what the opposing position gets right and why people might hold this position
  • Highlight the problems with this position
  • Present your own position , showing how it addresses these problems
  • Suggest a possible compromise —what elements of your position would proponents of the opposing position benefit from adopting?

This model builds up a clear picture of both sides of an argument and seeks a compromise. It is particularly useful when people tend to disagree strongly on the issue discussed, allowing you to approach opposing arguments in good faith.

Say you want to argue that the internet has had a positive impact on education. You might:

  • Acknowledge that students rely too much on websites like Wikipedia
  • Argue that teachers view Wikipedia as more unreliable than it really is
  • Suggest that Wikipedia’s system of citations can actually teach students about referencing
  • Suggest critical engagement with Wikipedia as a possible assignment for teachers who are skeptical of its usefulness.

You don’t necessarily have to pick one of these models—you may even use elements of both in different parts of your essay—but it’s worth considering them if you struggle to structure your arguments.

Regardless of which approach you take, your essay should always be structured using an introduction , a body , and a conclusion .

Like other academic essays, an argumentative essay begins with an introduction . The introduction serves to capture the reader’s interest, provide background information, present your thesis statement , and (in longer essays) to summarize the structure of the body.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

The body of an argumentative essay is where you develop your arguments in detail. Here you’ll present evidence, analysis, and reasoning to convince the reader that your thesis statement is true.

In the standard five-paragraph format for short essays, the body takes up three of your five paragraphs. In longer essays, it will be more paragraphs, and might be divided into sections with headings.

Each paragraph covers its own topic, introduced with a topic sentence . Each of these topics must contribute to your overall argument; don’t include irrelevant information.

This example paragraph takes a Rogerian approach: It first acknowledges the merits of the opposing position and then highlights problems with that position.

A common frustration for teachers is students’ use of Wikipedia as a source in their writing. Its prevalence among students is not exaggerated; a survey found that the vast majority of the students surveyed used Wikipedia (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). An article in The Guardian stresses a common objection to its use: “a reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from engaging with genuine academic writing” (Coomer, 2013). Teachers are clearly not mistaken in viewing Wikipedia usage as ubiquitous among their students; but the claim that it discourages engagement with academic sources requires further investigation. This point is treated as self-evident by many teachers, but Wikipedia itself explicitly encourages students to look into other sources. Its articles often provide references to academic publications and include warning notes where citations are missing; the site’s own guidelines for research make clear that it should be used as a starting point, emphasizing that users should always “read the references and check whether they really do support what the article says” (“Wikipedia:Researching with Wikipedia,” 2020). Indeed, for many students, Wikipedia is their first encounter with the concepts of citation and referencing. The use of Wikipedia therefore has a positive side that merits deeper consideration than it often receives.

The internet has been hailed as one of the greatest innovations of the 20th century and has caused what can only be termed as a revolution. The internet is available in most countries worldwide and is available to over 120 million people globally, which is approximately 2% of the world’s population (Saisan et al., 1). This is because the internet has been the driving force of information technology and is responsible for the major lifestyle change that has been experienced in the world today. The internet possesses two characteristics which have been vital to its success: it is the richest source of information; it provides a fast and interactive form of communication. These two characteristics have literally transformed the world into a global village. The internet has become indispensible in the running of our daily lives in virtually all sectors of our lives. The use of the internet should however be limited, because overusing the internet can have negative effects especially on social relations with other people and child development. Each person uses the internet in a different manner because it is a huge information resource (Saisan et al., 1). Some people choose to use it for entertainment, work, games, or research. Certain psychologists argue that overusing the internet can result in internet addiction. The internet is also being used by many people to relieve stress, anxiety, or depression. After a difficult day, the internet is popularly used to entertain and comfort. (Dreyfus 50) points out that for some people who develop internet addiction; it becomes an unhealthy means of coping with negative emotions. Instead of dealing with negative emotions, the internet is used as a means of escape. The internet addict develops an unhealthy dependence on the internet and is unable to deal with unfavorable emotions healthily. The internet presents a great opportunity for the propagation of other compulsive behaviors. For example, it offers an opportunity for addiction to online gaming. Online gaming is a big industry and it is projected to reach $ 19 billion by the year 2013 (Guan and Subrahmanyam 1). A research study by Cheng et al., (2), was carried out to investigate life satisfaction experienced by gamers on different levels of personality dimensions. It was found that the neuroticism often experienced by these gamers negatively affected the satisfaction they derived from life. It was therefore concluded that there was a negative relationship between the frequency of internet surfing and satisfaction in life (Cheng et al., 3).Teenagers are much more vulnerable to internet addiction as found by (Saisan et al., 2). This is because adolescence is a difficult period characterized by self-exploration and identity crisis. Teenagers who are facing developmental challenges are more likely to use the internet as a coping mechanism. Other compulsive behaviors which can be encouraged by the internet include addiction to pornography and cybersex. The addict may be engaged in visiting adult sites, adult chat-rooms, or fantasy sites. In addition, one may become addicted to cyber relationships where friends on messaging, social networking sites, and chat-rooms are more significant than real life friends. Other studies however, reveal that computer gaming assists in cognitive development of the individual (Dreyfus 52). These studies outline that cyber relationships, social networking, and online gaming are relaxing activities which do not necessarily result in addiction. These studies, however, do concur that excessive use of the internet may have negative effects on relationships (Dreyfus 52).

Young children need an adult’s supervision to validate the information that they have heard, felt, and seen (Guan and Subrahmanyam 1). Unfortunately, the internet does not contain any form of controls or checks to verify reliability of information. This means that children who use the internet are bombarded by information and are therefore their ability to differentiate between what is real and what is unreal, because reality in the virtual world cannot be ascertained (Akin and Iskender 138).

Some school children who are highly engaged in online activities demonstrate academic problems which may be a direct result of these activities. These students lack skills in writing because they plagiarize the projects. Moreover, the informal language used popularly in emails spills over in formal writing in essays among high school students (Saisan et al., 1).

It can be debated that the internet has been an enriching resource for intellectual and innovative work. However, the internet is often abused by children who neglect vital social activities like chores, quality time with adults, and homework. Dreyfus suggests that internet users will progressively lose the skills and the forbearance to conduct themselves favorably in the real world (53). In addition, the proliferation of illicit content on the internet like hate speech, pornography, bias, violence, and inappropriate content is easily accessible by children.

Pornography is an especially sensitive concern especially with regards to children because they are often drawn into this illegal and lucrative trade (Dreyfus 53). Pornography destroys the innocence of children by exposing them to adult activities and also harms them physically especially where they are exposed to pedophiles or child traffickers. It encourages the children to lose their inhibitions, teaches them to engage in sexual activities, or used to blackmail the children.

Online victimization and sexual solicitation are grave concerns whose incidences have been increasing steadily in the past years. A form of online victimization is online harassment where the victim is threatened or subjected to offensive behavior which is of a non-sexual nature (Guan and Subrahmanyam 1). Cyber bullying is also a form of harassment which can be described as the online mode of traditional bullying. Sexual solicitation occurs when one invites an individual to divulge sexual information, participate in sexual acts, or sexual talk. A recent study amongst 10-15 year olds reports that approximately 33 percent had experienced online harassment while another 15 percent had received sexual solicitations (Guan and Subrahmanyam 1).

It cannot be denied that the internet has revolutionized and contributed greatly to global development. Business can now be conducted across the world from any location in real time, and one can communicate with a friend in a faraway land cheaply, and in real time too. However, these remarkable developments have also been responsible for the proliferation of social decay and risks with which it is associated. Overusing the internet can result in internet addiction, and it also propagates other forms of addiction like online gaming and cybersex. The internet can also damage the cognitive development of a child due to the lack of adult validation of what the child is exposed to online. It blurs the sense of reality in exposed children, thus distorting his/her cognitive development. It also contributes to unhealthy social development as more time is spent online than in the real world. This stunts ability to relate to others in the real world. The internet is also a lucrative ground for cyber bullies, sexual solicitors, and pedophiles preying on innocent children or people. Due to these factors, it is important that the use of the internet be limited or regulated so as to control the negative effects it may propagate.

Arguments for and against Internet Filters in schools

A common problem that is discussed on Twitter between educators is that they don’t have full access to the Internet due to a filter installed either at their school or at the district level in their area.  There are a number of arguments for and against the existence of these filters, summarized in the table below.

Arguments for Internet Filters Arguments against Internet filters
They satisfy need for control over what kids do in school. They don’t teach responsible Internet use.
They prevent students from accessing sites which could be dangerous. Useful tools are blocked.
They block access to social networking sites that may result in cyberbullying. They cause network lag and slow down access to the Internet.
They make it easy to comply with educational regulations and laws involving Internet use by students. They are easily circumvented anyway. Google “unblock websites at school” or “proxy servers unblock websites”
  They teach kids how to avoid obstacles rather than how to solve problems.
  We are not teaching real life skills then, real life does not come with filters
  Internet filters tend to most often filter content for the teachers rather than the students: they know how to get by them.
  Within five years, the idea of an Internet filter will be antiquated.  With the development of 4G networks and the growth of smartphones, it’s only a matter of time before the vast majority of students have unfiltered access to the Internet in their pockets, whether IT dept’s like it or not.
  Many school districts have removed Internet filters with no ill effects.
  They create an artificial, limited research environment that will not help them when they move on to jobs or higher ed.
  The prevent valuable learning experiences about the risks involved with the Internet from taking place.

This document was produced by the collective wisdom of a few educators from #edchat working together. Our objective is to summarize all of the arguments for and against Internet filters in schools. The idea is, if we have the information and the argument worked out, our individual discussions with our local administrators will be a lot easier.

Most of us who chat on Twitter think that the Internet filters aren’t accomplishing their goal, which we think is to keep our students safe. What do they accomplish then? Mostly keep kids from making mistakes in school where they can be assisted with the consequences of their mistakes, and they prevent students from connecting to the most useful resources they could be using.
