Is anyone ever really comfortable writing about themselves? Have you tried to write a simple bio for your website or filled out the About section of your social media profile? It’s not always the most comfortable thing to do. What do you say? It can feel awkward talking about yourself.

Surface-level accomplishments are one thing, but what about the deeper, nitty-gritty details of life that have shaped us into the person we’ve become? Yeah, that stuff. How do you clean it up and make it presentable enough to share with an audience? 

If you’ve ever considered writing a memoir or an autobiography, beginning with an autobiographical essay might be a good place to test the waters.

What is an autobiographical essay .

Well, you’ve likely guessed that it’s writing about yourself , but what makes it different from any other personal writing like memoirs , autobiographies , and biographies ? An autobiographical essay (also called a narrative essay) is a subcategory of an autobiography. It’s similar in that it’s about your life story but a lot shorter. It is considered a primary source since it is written in the first person and based on facts (not autobiographical fiction ) pulled from personal experiences. A well-written autobiographical essay follows the same structure as a standard five-paragraph essay that’s divided into an introduction, body, and conclusion. They can be any length, but those used for work and school applications are usually no more than 650 words. 

What should I do before writing an autobiographical essay?

Before beginning the writing process, ask yourself the following questions:

Why am I writing this essay? 

Autobiographical essays are often written for college applications, and since they are in first person, they are not the best fit for book bios; however, they can work for an author website bio if you want to give readers a close peek into your backstory. 

Who is my audience? 

Similar to the previous question, knowing who (audience type) will be reading your essay will make it easier for you to create a more engaging piece. Knowing your audience’s expectations can help to guide your writing. A single story can be told in many different ways. You are not trying to build your story into something it is not, but rather, develop it in a way that answers the questions your audience may want to know.

What part or parts of my life do I want to share? 

It’s up to you. Similar to an autobiography, you can share your life story (summarized, of course) or you can select an event or group of events that shaped your life in some way (similar to a memoir). 

Who do I want to include in my story? 

Unlike an autobiography or memoir , an autobiographical essay is short and sweet, so there’s not a lot of room to bring other characters into the story if you’re giving an overview of your life history. An exception is if you choose to focus on a specific incident or event, but only a brief mention of others is recommended since the story is about you.

What should my writing process look like?

It’s up to you. There are different ways to write and it just depends on how you process, develop, and write information. As mentioned in this article on prewriting strategies , planning and researching before you begin writing will save you time and make the process smoother. Some examples of prewriting include:

Mind-mapping – a process that allows you to visually connect ideas to create cohesiveness in writing.

Research/ Notetaking – allows you to gather information and then put it into a form that you can use later, which is critical to a well-written essay. 

Free-writing / Journaling – writing freely without regard to format, punctuation, or order. It allows you to get all of the words out onto the page without rules. 

Storyboarding – the use of sticky notes or other forms of quick notes like index cards to write down story parts and rearrange them until you create the ideal story order. 

What are the steps to writing an autobiographical essay about my life?

Autobiographical Essay - Journaling Before Writing

There are 7 steps to writing an autobiographical essay. As previously mentioned, a standard essay consists of five paragraphs that make up three parts:

  • Introduction (one paragraph) 
  • Body (three paragraphs)
  • Conclusion (one paragraph) 

Step 1: Create an outline

Whether you’re a plotter (someone who prefers outlines) or a pantser (someone who prefers to “fly by the seat of their pants” when writing), autobiographical essays have a particular structure, so outlining can definitely save you time and frustration. You have a finite amount of space to say what you want, so every sentence has to be placed strategically in order to get the details in the proper order so that it makes sense. 

Start with a basic three-part outline: introduction, body, and conclusion.

Step 2: Expand the outline

What part or parts of your life did you decide to share? Remember that you only have three paragraphs so you want to narrow your story down to the most impactful moments. Expand the body section of your outline to include these parts. 

In the case of autobiographical essays, less is more. Trying to cram too many things into your story can minimize it’s impact. 

Step 3: Start your essay with an engaging introduction

Greet your reader with who you are and what you are about to share. The introduction is your space to hook the reader so that they’ll want to read the rest of your essay. 

Step 4: Fill out the body of your essay. 

Chronological order is best. With autobiographies and memoirs, there’s room for flashbacks and playing around with sequence, but not with essays. The safest route is from point A to point B.

Step 5: Wrap up your story

Your conclusion is the nice pretty bow that you add to the gift of your life story that you’ve just shared. Sharing your story takes a lot of courage, no matter how short it is. It’s inviting someone into the deeper parts of you who are, and that’s a big deal. The conclusion is a great place to remind the reader why you shared your story and what you hope they’ll glean from it. Maybe it’s to get to know you better or perhaps take something from it that can help them in some way. Whatever you choose to say, make it memorable. First impressions are important but last impressions leave a mark.

Step 6: Edit, and then edit again 

Similar to writing a book, editing is everything. Great editing shines a light on what you may have overlooked while also pushing you to write authentically and succinctly. Unlike writing full-length books where hiring a professional editor is essential, autobiographical essays can get by with a good spell-checker, a writing app , and an alpha reader (someone you trust who can give honest feedback.). 

This is not to say that you can’t hire a professional editor. There are very talented editors available who would be more than happy to assist, but if that is not in your budget or just not part of your big-picture plans, make the best of the resources you have at your disposal.

An autobiographical narrative is one of the most personal types of essays. Not only are you writing a paper that expresses your own views and thoughts, but autobiographical narratives are based upon your own life experiences. Thus, it follows that the organization of the paper will also be more personal in nature. Unlike a narrative essay based on another individual, an autobiographical narrative will always contain your personal thoughts, desires, and motivations. While it is hard to know the motives of other individuals when writing a biographical narrative, unless you know the individual well, you always have access to the motivations for your own personal development. Hence, when you organize your autobiographical narrative you must format your essay around the events that promote your personal growth and the feeling you experienced before, during, and after these events.

There are several ways to incorporate your thoughts, feelings, and motivations into the organization of your paper. First, you can consider integrating your description of certain events with your motives and thoughts for the events. This way, you present the events and your motivations both in chronological order and simultaneously. This means that you are describing the events and your feelings as they occurred, or at the same time. Second, you can consider blocking your description of your events and your feelings, providing a paragraph describing the event followed by a paragraph describing your motivations. Also, you could also reverse this blocking format to first provide your motivations and then the description of the event.

Below is a table containing examples of both table types.
My sixteenth birthday was when it all began. It was the first girl-boy party I had ever had. I had had to beg my parents for month to have that party. Once they said yes, I had worried for weeks about what I was going to wear. When the day came, I was so excited that my crush Brandon was coming. As I sat next to him during the movie, I could feel my heart race. We were sitting side by side, close enough to touch. I slowly moved my hand towards his, wondering if he wanted to hold my hand like I wanted to hold his and fearing that he didn’t.

My sixteenth birthday was at my house on a Saturday during the summer, and it would be a boy-girl party. I had planned the whole day. First, we would swim in the pool in my backyard while my dad and mom prepared hamburgers. After we ate, we would watch a movie in my living room. At the end of the night, we would have cake, and I would open my presents.

Since it took me weeks to convince my parents to have the party, I was very excited when it finally rolled around. My crush Brandon was going to come, and I hoped that he would finally make a move. I thought that the movie would be a perfect chance to show him that I wanted to be his girlfriend.

How do these two examples compare? Although they both narrate the same event, is one more effective than the other? Generally, the first organizational scheme (when you integrate description and motivations together) is the most seamless. By incorporating the two together, you provide the reader with a more complete picture of the event – as if the reader is experiencing the event as it unfolds in your narration. However, sometimes this formatting does not work, specifically with complicated events. If you feel that the event you are narrating is too difficult to explain or clarify, then you should consider breaking your description and thoughts into two separate paragraphs. Although, you need to be aware of how this affects the story you are telling. Do you want the importance of the event to be at the end? In doing so, you make the event seem more suspenseful, and you can make the reader more compelled to finish your narrative. Nevertheless, organizing your paper in this way places more of a burden on you as a writer because you must clearly connect the separate ideas in the paragraphs.

Regardless of the organizational scheme you choose, you must properly describe your personal growth. In order to do so, you must organize your essay around one significant event or a collection of interrelated specific events. Generally, the number of events you include defines the amount of detail you put into describing your events. If your paper centers around one main event that helped shape your personal growth, the majority of the body would describe the one event while the introduction and conclusion would include your thoughts and feelings from before and after the event to help clarify how the occurrence helped shape you. However, if your paper details a succession of events that culminate in your personal growth, the description of each event, including the insights and feelings associated with it, would be limited to a single body paragraph. In this case, the introduction and conclusion would still indicate how you felt and thought both before and after the transformation.

In Blending Genre, Altering Style: Writing Multigenre Papers , Tom Romano describes his ideal ELA classroom as one in which students "are both consumers and producers of all kinds of literature and media" (43).  As students are exposed to or are expected to have gained "mastery" of certain genres, teachers can challenge students by asking them to combine genres into cohesive multigenre pieces.  In her article discussing the use of multigenre writing assignments in her classroom, Nancy Mack states "I know that assignments must be innovative and interesting enough so that they appear unlike the old drudgery of hackneyed assignments. The format must be open and attractive to invite the possibility of doing something engaging rather than merely pursuing the trivial school game. Topics for writing should make use of the unique knowledge and skills that students already have, connecting school work in a respectful way to things that they value in their personal lives. The completed assignment should be personally significant and full of power and integrity for the author so that the writing itself demands to be heard by a real audience." Preparation

  • Determine how much of the book you will ask students to read. You may wish to use this text in its entirety as an example of the genre of autobiography. Alternately, a few of the sections can serve as supplementary resources to existing units. For example, the section “I Am Free! ” could supplement a unit on slavery, “Jim Crow Days” could enrich a unit on Civil Rights and segregation, and “Harlem-Town” would integrate into a study of the Harlem Renaissance. A third option is to treat one of the sections as a stand-alone autobiographical piece.
  • Preview the section(s) you plan to teach and read Teaching Racially Sensitive Literature: A Teacher’s Guide .  Having Our Say does contain frank conversations about race, including representations of blatant racism through language and action. Session One

  • Prepare students for the reading by discussing its unique structural features.  Have them leaf through the book and take note of its structure while you guide them through the different sections (major sections indicated by roman numerals and titles, unlabeled introductory chapters, alternating chapters labeled with the narrating sister’s name, etc. ).
  • Point out that the third author, a writer for The New York Times , is the objective voice in the chapters at the beginning of the sections.
  • Offer students the label of “multigenre text” and ask if they have read or are familiar with any multigenre texts (Avi’s Nothing But the Truth , Walter Dean Myers’ Monster ).  Ask them what genres seem to be represented in this work.  See the ReadWriteThink lesson Reading and Analyzing Multigenre Texts for more information on this specialized reading and writing, including a booklist with more examples.
  • Have students produce a list of ways that informational nonfiction (perhaps students can conceive of it as “newspaper” writing) and autobiographical nonfiction are similar and different.  You may wish to use the Venn Diagram tool to facilitate this discussion.
  • Extend this discussion into a conversation about what makes each of these genres especially effective.  Write students’ observations on an overhead or large sheet of Post-It paper for later use/reference.  You can then use these preparatory materials as a rubric for the final student product or use the Multigenre Autobiograpy Project Rubric included in this lesson.

Session Two

  • Have students read the desired section(s) of the book. 
  • direct presentation of ideas: “A generation after the end of slavery, freedom for black Americans was still elusive” (90)
  • a focus on facts and events:  “1896…the Supreme Court ruling in the Plessy v. Ferguson case” (90)
  • development with third-person examples and explanation:  “The case stemmed from an incident in which a Louisiana citizen named Homer Plessy lost his appeal to the Supreme Court, which sanctioned the establishment of ‘separate but equal’ facilities for blacks and whites” (90 – 91)
  • formal, standard English throughout and objective perspective throughout.

The style here stands in marked contrast to the conversational style of the sisters’ chapters, where the narrative is driven by dialogue, descriptions, stories, and opinions.

  • Use an overhead of the Multigenre Autobiography Planning Sheet to have students summarize the Delanys’ story in the center circle.  Then review the section opener to list context the third author provides and put the contextual information in the outer circle.  Point out that, diverse as the styles of the two sections may be, they work together to show how the sisters’ lives were part of a larger, more dynamic picture than their individual life experiences alone.
  • Preview the multigenre autobiography assignment, noting to students that they will write about an event from their life as well as the larger context surrounding it.  Encourage students to make connections between their autobiography and the information they include in the contextual essay like the ones from Having Our Say .

Session Three

  • Have students brainstorm a significant event or experience from their lives that they would like to share.  Some students will choose to start with a significant world, community, or family event first ( e.g. , the September 11 attack, the closing of a plant or factory in their town, the birth of a sibling) and then determine the personal narrative they will write in relation to that event.  Others will have an experience they want to narrate and will determine the focus of the contextual information later.  Either approach can work, but ensure that students choose a personal experience that will need to be contextualized.
  • Refer to the list of qualities of narrative/autobiographical nonfiction the class produced in Session 1 (or use the Understanding the Two Genres handout ). 
  • Remind students that they will need to work toward these objectives as they produce a rough draft of their personal essay.
  • Distribute the Multigenre Autobiography Planning Sheet .
  • Model for students the functionality of the Multigenre Autobiography Planning Sheet . Using an event from your own life, start jotting down the events, feelings, and reactions you would need to include in an autobiographical essay recounting the event.
  • As the connections become apparent, or after you’ve modeled the inner circle, write down in the outer circle elements of context you would need to include.
  • Answer any student questions about the process and give them time to start planning the autobiographical component in the inner circle.

Session Four

  • At the beginning of this session, ask students to recall specific instances from the book to exemplify the qualities of autobiographical narrative writing (focus on events and reactions; indirect presentation of main ideas; opinions and reactions are central to the piece; etc .) from the Understanding the Two Genres handout or the list of qualities the class developed to help them focus their efforts.
  • Give students time to work on composition of a draft of the personal essay.  Use the Timeline tool to help students plan the structure of their essay. 
  • Ask students to complete a draft of the essay by the next session.  They should be ready for a peer review activity.

Session Five

  • Put students in pairs to read each others’ drafts and provide feedback to their partners’ essays.  Use the Autobiographical Component Peer Review Guide or a similar resource reflecting the qualities on which you wish students to focus.
  • After giving students time to share their comments with each other, tell students that their attention will now be shifting to concerns of audience as they prepare for the second essay in the project. They need to consider the questions  “Who will be reading this piece?” and “What kind(s) of information do those readers need to gain a full understanding of the experience?”
  • Refer back to sections such as “Harlem Town” or “Jim Crow” to give students a model for this way of thinking.  Remind them that the essay at the beginning of each section provides historical, familial, or cultural context for the individual stories that the sisters narrate in the chapters that follow. 
  • Ask for a few volunteers to tell what event they are narrating.  As a class, discuss the kind of context they will need ( e.g. , If a student is writing about moving from a large city to his/her new home in a smaller town, he/she could describe their city/neighborhood as a reporter would; If a student is narrating the divorce of his/her parents, he/she could provide a brief objective chronology of his/her family life up to that point).
  • Direct peer response pairs to focus on the type and amount of contextualizing their essays will require.  Does the reader need background on the author’s family?  On a historical event?  About a cultural term or concept?  These mini-conferences will produce a plan for the second piece in this assignment.
  • Have students record their needs on the outer circle of the Multigenre Autobiography Planning Sheet .
  • For homework, have them further think about/refine their plan for the contextual essay using the Contextual Essay Planning Sheet . There they should make firm decisions about the amount and type of background information they will need to give their readers. 
  • Ask students to begin the process of researching any information to which they do not have immediate access (family history, historical events).  This research need not be formal, but students should gather information they will need.

Session Six

  • Check students’ plans for the contexual essay and review the guidelines for effective informational writing (see the Understanding the Two Genres handout). 
  • Answer any questions students have about the contextual essay and allow time for the composition of the context opener. 
  • Ask students to have the context opener drafted for the next session.  They should be ready for a second peer review activity.

Session Seven

  • Students meet in the same response pairs and use the Contextual Component Peer Review Guide or a similar resource to provide each other feedback on their partners’ work. 
  • Have pairs go back to the autobiographical essays as well as their plans from Session 5 to make sure the contextual essay sufficiently prepares the reader for the autobiographical essay.
  • If time allows, give students time to begin preparations for revision.

Session Eight

  • Allow students time to revise and polish their project based on feedback and self-evaluation.
  • As a class, choose a unifying school, community, national, or world event.  Write a collaborative contextual essay and have students contribute individual autobiographical essays.
  • Families can choose a unifying event and write a contextual essay together.  Individual family members can contribute individual autobiographical essays.
  • Expand the multigenre requirement to include photographs, poetry, a play, or another genre of your choice.

Student Assessment / Reflections

  • Use the Multigenre Autobiography Project Rubric to evaluate the revised student work.
  • Students should also be asked to reflect on what they learned by putting their story into a larger context.  Although they may not have the dynamic connections that are present in the Delany sisters’ story, encourage them to see how putting their stories in a new perspective can help them understand themselves more critically.  This reflection could come as a preface or introduction to the completed multigenre piece.

An autobiography can be written using a variety of formats. The author needs to plan and understand the message they wish to convey with their autobiography when choosing an autobiography format. They also need to be aware of the audience they wish to engage the most. The main autobiography formats used in history and today are traditional, memoir, personal, vignettes, graphic novels , dramas, and scripts.

Traditional Autobiography

A traditional autobiography , also known as a full autobiography, is a true story of the complete life of the person writing the story. Traditional autobiographies are also known as full autobiographies because the story covers everything from the very first memory of the author up until the time the story is written.

Memoirs are autobiographies that focus on one specific time period, a specific event, or a major theme in life. Memoirs show an event or a set time period from the perspective of the author. Memoirs can show how the event affected them, what they did during that time, and how that occurrence was significant to them.

Personal Narratives or Essays

A personal narrative or personal essay is similar to a memoir as it usually focuses on one specific period of time or on one event. Personal narratives are reflective, however, because the author does describe their life during that time or event, but also reflects in detail what their emotions and thoughts were during this time. Personal narratives are written to engage the audience to experience the events as the author would have.

Vignettes are one of the shortest autobiographical formats. Vignettes highlight the author's emotions and thoughts surrounding a life event. This is done to share with the audience how the author's life changed after a certain event or time period. Vignettes do not really discuss the major elements of the event, just how the author felt during that time.

Graphic Novels

Graphic novels are pieces of literature that use imagery to help tell a story. Autobiographers can use pictures alongside their written work to share their life stories with the audience. Some authors can use real images captured on camera to add to their autobiography. Other authors can create images by drawing the scene or hiring an artist to illustrate an event.

One of the earliest known graphic novels components used in an autobiography was this painting found around 1530 CE in the memoirs of Babur.

Drama or Scripts

Dramas or scripts for plays can also be written in an autobiographical format. Dramas are theatrical plays that act out a story usually in front of an audience. Dramas and plays use actors and actresses to tell a story. As long as the script for the drama is a true account of the author's life, then the drama can be considered an autobiography.

There are important elements and components needed to construct an autobiography. Most autobiographies should be formatted the following way:

  • Title - Some authors may come up with a creative title while others may have a simple title like "Joe's Autobiography."
  • Dedication - The author can include an individual, group, or organization to which they dedicate their work.
  • Table of Contents - The author can organize their story by time periods, sections, events, etc.
  • Acknowledgments - This section is used to show gratitude to anyone involved in supporting the process.
  • Foreword - A comment written by the author themselves or written by someone close to the author that explains their experience in writing, reviewing, and reading the autobiography.
  • Introduction - This section can be used to explain the purpose of the story, preview the major themes or events, the time period, or be used to outline how the story is formatted.
  • Body - This is where all the main writing and storytelling will be placed.
  • Conclusion - The summary and end of the story.
  • Memorabilia - The author can list any important themes discussed in the story or key "takeaways" the audience can think about.
  • Index - This is used to organize and define events, concepts, terms, and other points that are not general knowledge.

The steps involved in the process of how to write an autobiography are:

  • Creating an outline - The writer should write down all their notes that are based on the message they want to share with the audience. The outline should cover all major themes, events, thoughts, emotions, and time periods that play a critical role in telling the story.
  • Selecting a format - The author should choose the format that best fits what they are trying to accomplish with their story.
  • Using vivid imagery and figurative language - Writers should use vivid language when writing their story to help connect the audience to how the author lived the experiences they are telling about.

How to Start an Autobiography

Once the outline and format are picked out, the author can start the main part of their autobiography. The author should be aware of these components while starting to write their story:

  • Create a title
  • List all characters (real people) involved
  • Use the most vivid memories and best events surrounding that time period or event
  • Use a central theme and stick to it
  • Organize the story based on the outline notes

How to End an Autobiography

When the story is written there are some things an author must do to finish the autobiography:

  • Add a conclusion
  • Proofread and have a copyeditor review the work
  • Edit where necessary
  • Add essential details or remove obsolete ones

Many people that are creating an autobiography for the first time may need help by using an autobiography template to help guide their story.

For writers learning how to write an autobiography, an example template is as follows:

  • Create notes of major life experiences, characters, events, etc.
  • Create an outline of the story. The author can use this time to create a purpose for their autobiography.
  • Choose a format and structure for the autobiography.
  • Research: Review documents, interview people involved, or read similar stories.
  • Write a rough draft of the story.
  • Review, proofread, edit, and get a second opinion through peer-review.
  • Write another draft.
  • Proofread again and refine the story. Shorten the story if necessary. Autobiographies are naturally long, and authors need to be aware of the length of their stories. If the story is too long, they could disengage their audience. Sometimes, "less is more."
  • Add a conclusion, sections, or other details.

Everyone has a story. We are a compilation of them, and everyone's story is different. In this lesson, we'll learn about how to tell our stories using numerous strategies and formats, along with some tips and tricks to get our creative juices flowing.

An autobiography is a story about one's life written by the person. This person could be writing their story to learn more about their life, pass on their experiences, or engage others for entertainment. Whatever the purpose, the writer is attempting to convey their life experiences through the words on the page.

There are many formats when it comes to writing about one's self. Let's take a look at some of the most common ones that can help you get started on your writing journey, including memoirs, vignettes, dramas, and more.

The traditional autobiography covers a person's life from birth to the present moment. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela are both examples of traditional autobiographies.

A memoir limits the information presented and, unlike the traditional structure, focuses on certain moments and/or themes in a person's life, such as historical, philosophical, religious, coming-of-age, adversity and many more. Popular works such as Angela's Ashes, Eat, Pray, Love, and Night are examples of memoirs.

Personal narratives or essays narrow the focus even more than a memoir, looking at one moment in time and expanding the experience through dialogue and imagery. We typically see this type of writing in the classroom and articles published in magazines or online blogs.

Vignettes are short chapters that cover one specific event at a time. A collection of vignettes can be published as a complete work. However, each chapter doesn't directly connect to the others. Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris is an excellent example of an autobiography in vignette format.

Graphic novels are unique, as they use drawn or cartoon panels to convey a true story. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and Maus by Art Spiegelman are two examples of authors telling their stories through words and pictures.

Drama or scripts can explore autobiographical topics through dialogue on stage or in film. For example, The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams is a play that explores his rise to fame.

Steps to Success

While there isn't one way to write an autobiography, there are many pitfalls where one can get lost in the writing process. Here are some steps to organize your thoughts and writing.

1. Outline Your Thoughts

Write down key points that you know you want to cover before you begin writing. Figure out what you want to say before you lock yourself into a format.

2. Select Your Format

Before you begin writing, decide on the format you think would work best. If you want to focus on one moment in time, an essay, vignette, or memoir may be the best option. If you want to focus on a larger timeline, a traditional format or memoir may work for you. Give yourself some time to see what feels right. Outlining your thoughts should help you see the length of your piece and how each experience is connected, if at all.

3. Show, Don't Tell

Put the reader directly into your experience. Use vivid imagery and figurative language to make the scene feel real. Don't simply tell the reader what happened to you; write the experience in a way in which the reader is there with you in the memory. What did you see? What did you smell? Were there sounds that caught your attention?

Tips & Tricks

Remember, there isn't one way to successfully write an autobiography. Here are some tips and tricks to get your story on the pathway to success:

Know the purpose of writing your autobiography. Keep this in mind as you write. This purpose can help you stay on track, remove unnecessary information, and keep your thoughts organized.

It's not possible to write every single moment into your story. When writers try to do so, they get lost in unorganized content, and their readers become bored. Focus on the key points and be ready to kill your darlings.

As writers, we can get lost in the things we know about our experience. Sometimes we don't add enough information for our readers to see the big picture. Other times, we can add too much. Having others read your work can help you see the gaps in understanding and places that simply need work.

Every writer has encountered a moment of struggling to come up with words he or she wants. Don't fear writer's block! There are ways we can combat this mental block. Pick up a copy of Natalie Goldberg's book Writing Down the Bones. While this text can be helpful in regards to writing, it's a series of true vignettes about her life. Stephen King's On Writing is a memoir about his life with regards to how he got into the art of writing. Both can model style and format while offering tips of the trade.

Let's review. When thinking about writing an autobiography , a story about your life experience, there are several things to consider. First, what do you want to say? Do you want to write about one experience or more? After creating an outline, decide which format you want to use. A longer story could result in a traditional autobiography or memoir, and a shorter story could result in a compilation of vignettes or even a graphic novel. Whichever you choose, remember to keep your purpose at the forefront of your mind; show, do not tell the experience; and ask for a second opinion when nearing the end of your literary journey.
